The Yagasuri Panel's Meaning + Gojohime and Sprituality
Hello, everybody! I know I've been gone for the past two years but I'm finally back. With the release of the latest chapter I've been incredibly devastated but it still won't stop me from being delusional! Since there has been a lot of talk surrounding Gojo and Buddha, I've been doing some research, and I think I found something that potentially draws us closer to the meaning of the famous Yagasuri panel :)
CHAPTER 236 SPOILERS AHEAD
Tumblr media
As a quick refresher, the pattern displayed in the background of Gojo and Utahime is a traditional Japanese pattern called yagasuri. According to the sources I found on the internet, the arrows are related to archery, and thus were a common pattern on male clothing. The design represents the unwavering nature of an arrow because once it is shot, it will never return. Brides in the Edo period wore the pattern as a symbol of good luck, ensuring that they will not have to return to their families. Additionally, in Buddhism, the arrows embody the fight against evil.
There are a few interesting things I'd like to point out about the information above. For one, from all the pictures I've seen, the arrows in the yagasuri pattern are typically pointed downward, whereas in the cover, they are pointed from Gojo toward Utahime. Two, the pattern's relation to Buddhism and Buddha. Since there are many parallels to Gojo and Buddha, I went on a quest to research more about the story of Buddha (Prince Siddhartha) out of my own curiosity. What's fascinating is that supposedly in his early life, he won his wife, Princess Yasodhara, in an archery contest. They were married at an early age and had a newborn son when Prince Siddhartha was 29. Unfortunately, he leaves his family behind to embark on a journey toward enlightenment.
Aren't these details crazy?
Buddha's wife was a princess. Utahime means song princess/diva/songstress.
Both couples share a connection with archery/arrows.
Gojo is currently 29 years old in the manga and is theorized to reach enlightenment soon (assuming he truly is following the path of Buddha).
BUT THERE IS MORE.
Apparently, Yasodhara has been Buddha's wife for many lifetimes. While there are numerous stories of the two's history in their past lives, the one I'd like to bring attention to is from The Collective Sutra of the Buddha's Past Acts. The text recounts the first time Prince Siddhartha comes into contact with Yasodhara in a previous life as a Brahmin (Hindu priest) by the name of Sumedha, while she was a woman named Sumidha. As he waits for Buddha Dipankara to arrive to the city of Paduma, Sumedha decides to buy flowers as an offering. He then discovers that the king bought all the flowers as his own offering to the Buddha, much to his dismay. But in the corner of his eye, he spots a beautiful young girl with 7 lotuses in her hands and offers to buy one from her. The girl, Sumidha, vows to give 5 of her lotuses to him in exchange for being his wife in all of their next lives. In another version, Sumedha and Sumidha went to a city where Buddha Dipankara was expected to visit. He then asks her for one of her flowers to throw as an offering to the Buddha. She then asks him to throw another one in her behalf. Buddha Dipankara summons the two and reveals that they will remain connected for many lifetimes and help each other attain enlightenment.
Tumblr media
In the latest chapter, we see a panel of lotuses. From what is visible, there are 7 flowers. 7 flowers? 7. Flowers. I also think it's a funny coincidence how Sumidha promises to give Sumedha 5 flowers due to the fact that we associate Gojo with the number 5 because of the kanji in his name.
Just like Prince Siddhartha and Princess Yasodhara, I believe Gojo and Utahime are connected by fate. In the manga, whenever Utahime appears, it is almost always in relation to Gojo. They are made to contrast each other in almost everything besides motivations. Their color palettes, the schools they teach at, their values, and positioning in the jujutsu hierarchy. These are not coincidences.
And yet, despite all these differences, there seems to be a mutual level of trust between the two of them that transcends their usual bickering dynamic. Utahime has no obligation to help Gojo, but she does anyway. She CHOOSES to help him because she understands they share a common goal: protecting and nurturing the students. On Gojo's side, he CHOOSES to request a helping hand from Utahime first. Out of all people, he wanted to reveal his suspicions to her first. While Utahime provides assistance when she can, Gojo looks out for her when he can.
He claims that it is a pain to look out for the weak, but he continues to protect her. Gojo and Utahime put their lives at risk helping each other because they TRUST each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If my theory is true and it turns out that they are connected by fate, it would explain the unusual direction of the yagasuri in chapter 34. No matter how many lifetimes have passed, the soul of Gojo will always return to Utahime, just like how Sumedha promised Sumidha that he will marry her in every life. And the soul of Utahime will remain assisting him toward the journey of enlightenment.
I'm not saying they're married or anything but their relationship honestly parallels Prince Siddhartha and Princess Yasodhara so well. Although both of their narratives appear to culminate in the man's quest for enlightenment, they nonetheless serve as compelling illustrations of the power of a relationship founded on mutual trust.
___________
I might add on to this post later on if I feel like I missed something, but let me know what you think! :D These reaches are my specialty so be sure to take it with a grain of salt and don't take it too seriously. It's all in great fun :3

Oshi no Ko 145: A Story Without 「アイ」
Tumblr media
The question of how exactly Aqua and Ruby were reborn is something that floats around vaguely in the early stages of the Oshi no Ko, teased as a mystery that will exist in the background as opposed to one actively pursued for resolution. My theory is that this element of the story was likely more prominent in the version of Oshi no Ko that was originally conceptualized (i.e, the one that did not involve Ai's death) but the abrupt change to the story's dramatic tone and intensity pushed it into the background. As it stands, Aqua's wishy-washy statement that he'll figure it out once he's done enjoying Baby Mode about matches the weight this is given is the narrative, at least to begin with.
Even with the turn in tone and focus the manga takes, we do ultimately circle back to addressing and answering this question via the presence of Crow Girl/Tsukuyomi who seems to be the one responsible for facilitating their reincarnation in some way or another. Admittedly, this reveal in 145 comes a bit abruptly and the implied motivations it ascribes to Tsukuyomi don't… really line up with the things she says and does prior to the Movie Arc. But what really left me a little cold with this reveal is that it does not involve Ai whatsoever. Her name and even her image are not even once mentioned, not even in passing by GRSR.
This made me feel pretty uncomfortable for a variety of reasons I'll get into later but it wasn't until I started going through the manga to look more into how the reincarnation had been discussed before that I realized just why this felt so jarring - it simply wasn't consistent with what came beforehand. While the current explanation excludes Ai entirely, prior discussion of GRSR's reincarnation centers her to an equal and opposite degree.
Tumblr media
Both Gorou and Sarina are thinking of Ai as they die, with both of them also (even if only symbolically) hearing her voice in their final moments. Gorou hears her singing as his ringtone plays and Ruby says Ai was "singing in [her] head" up to the very end. Ai's face is implicitly the first thing either of them see after being reborn and Aqua even speculates, as his first guess as to the nature of their rebirth, that it was this strength of feeling all focused on specifically Ai that caused it to happen.
Not only that, but Ai is even centered in the "fake" story of their rebirth that the twins sell Miyako to get her on board.
Tumblr media
Perception of this bit in the fandom seems to vary from "it's just a joke" to "Jokes Are The Deepest Lore" and beyond. I myself don't put a massive amount of weight on it. However, in discussions where this is taken even semi-seriously as foreshadowing then it is flatly disingenuous to cherrypick the AQRB crumbs while not giving the same weight to the (imo, equally loaded) implication that Gorou and Sarina were reborn as Ai's children because she herself was favoured by the gods.
As the murder mystery elements of the story take prominence, this question is left unanswered but resurfaces towards the end of the Private arc with the arrival of Tsukuyomi. Here, too, we see Ai being centered as a key figure in Gorou and Sarina's reincarnation - the chapter is even named 'Mother and Mother', in reference to both of Aqua's mothers for each of his lives.
Most tellingly of all to me, however, is Tsukuyomi's appearance at the end of the chapter. Literally her first speaking line is commenting on how kind the gods must be to bring the Hoshinos together - describing them as (paraphrased) two motherless children and a childless mother and ascribing a great deal of weight to their togetherness.
Tumblr media
Even if you disagree that the manga is centering Ai in this context, it is undeniable that the togetherness of the Hoshinos as a trio and specifically as a mother and children is what Tsukuyomi is highlighting as being meaningful here.
We even see a repeat of this in chapter 118 and her first on-screen conversation with Aqua.
Tumblr media
I've seen people take this to mean, in the context of future chapter hindsight, that she is claiming the 'meaning' of his rebirth is his connection to Ruby. But if you go back and follow the thread that leads to this mic drop... it's a conversation that's about Ai. And specifically, Aqua is told to consider what it means that his soul was reborn in that body (emphasis mine): i.e, what does it mean that he was reborn specifically as Ai Hoshino's son?
With all this laid out, I really don't think it's a stretch to say that Ai, both as an idol and a person, is treated as a more or less equal part of the GRSR -> AQRB reincarnation as the two people being reborn. Which, like… she should be! She's their mother. But when we do finally get around to concretely answering this question..
Tumblr media
Zip. Zilch. Nada. It had nothing to do with her. The closest we get to an acknowledgement that she even exists full stop is her goofy ass bunny mascot's face on (presumably) Sarina's snowman.
Tumblr media
As I've said before, the basic beats of this as an answer to 'why reincarnation' are not inherently bad or unworkable. An animal repaying human kindness in some supernatural way is a tale as old as tales and given the ways in which Oshi no Ko plays around with mythological and folkloric ideas, making the reincarnation the result of a Tsuru no Ongaeshi-esque repayment of selfless kindness suits it quite well. The issue here is not one of an inherently broken idea, but flawed execution.
If this is the final word on the hows and whys of Gorou and Sarina's reincarnation - and I feel more or less settled that it is - then Ai has been entirely excluded from the birth of her own children. The sheer amount of weight placed on her role, specifically, as Aqua and Ruby's mother has vanished because after all the build up of why? the answer seems to be just that she happened to be pregnant.
I don't think I need to overexplain why it feels gross for Ai to be reduced to a convenient walking uterus in this regard. This was the element of this answer that made me so uncomfortable when from the get go: Ai's arc is so overwhelmingly about her being denied the right to agency over her own body and sexuality and her giving birth to Aqua and Ruby is, in part, a reclamation of it. It wasn't just an act of love performed for her children but also one for herself - she risked everything in order to give herself the family she had longed for her entire life.
If this incongruity was intentional, I think I would be interested in it as an element of Ai's tragedy - the idea that even the birth of her own children was hijacked by forces beyond her control and warped into something that existed to serve her fans. But I really don't get the sense that this was considered at all and honestly… that's kind of equally sad.
Tumblr media
I was wordvomiting a much less articulate version of all the above in the Oshi no Brainrot Discord server and @penguinkyun said a few things that I think really nailed the heart of the issue here:
"theres barely anything of ai here when shes such a central character […] removing ai's own emotional stake in the matter and rounding it up to "crow girl felt bad for gorou and sarina because they helped her that one time and then reincarnated them" just…doesnt hold the same impact."
This is, I think, key to what made this reveal fall so flat for me and highlights this chapter's place in a much broader trend of Ai's place in the twins' lives being downplayed and favour of amping up the intensity of the GRSR relationship. To once again quote Lace because I think she sums it up quite neatly:
"[...] akasaka is absolutely ramping up the soap operaness of grsr with ai as collateral."
And that just kind of bums me out. :(

Kaiju Week in Review (September 3-9, 2023)
Tumblr media
I was a bit nervous about GAMERA -Rebirth-; the animation looked dodgy and Netflix has a shaky track record with kaiju shows. I'm pleased to report this is the best entry in the genre that they've put their name on. Good characters, great action (brutal as always), and actual episodic storytelling that effortlessly weaves in elements from the Showa films beyond all the returning kaiju. Watch it immediately.
Tumblr media
Tie-ins abound for GAMERA -Rebirth-: a two-part novelization, a manga adaptation, and a prequel manga that sheds some light on [UNBELIEVABLY MASSIVE SPOILERS]. That prequel manga (GAMERA -Rebirth- code thyrsos) is being published online for free in both Japanese and English. You can read the first chapter here.
Tumblr media
In unofficial translation news, English subtitles for GAMERA.1999 (1999) and yokaipedia (2022) are now available. The former is Hideaki Anno's making-of documentary for Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris; the latter is a fun, child-friendly fantasy from Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki with a big ol' centipede-dragon at the end. (It's also maybe the first Japanese kaiju film I've ever seen with a major Black character.) I haven't gotten to GAMERA.1999 yet, though from scrubbing through it, it seems like a lot of dialogue was just ignored by the translator. Shame, as that's one I've wanted for a long time.
youtube
We have a teaser for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, as well as a premiere date for the first two (out of ten) episodes: November 17. (I am being showered with Media for my 30th birthday.) The big news from this trailer is that John Goodman is reprising his role as Bill Randa from Kong: Skull Island. I assume that's going to be through flashbacks and old recordings only, since he was eaten by a Skullcrawler in that one. We also catch glimpses of two new creatures, a dragon and a crab from what I can tell. The latter looks to be fighting a Mother Longlegs.
Tumblr media
Fandango and AMC have added mostly-empty listings for Godzilla 2000 on November 1. Fathom Events screened Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla on November 3 last year; despite randomly showing Tokyo SOS back in March, I gather they're making a tradition out of Godzilla Day. Note that the listed runtime is longer than the film itself. Predictions for the program: another message from Keiji Ota, the 2022 Godzilla vs. Gigan short, and the Japanese version of G2K. Interesting that they're running the last Toho Godzilla film to receive a wide release in the U.S. exactly a month before Godzilla Minus One has a wide release of its own here.
Tumblr media
Gamera isn't a meta-defining Godzilla Battle Line unit... but he's Gamera in a Godzilla game, so I've been using him in every match since I unlocked him. He's gearing towards demolishing flying units, with fireballs that deal more damage against them and knock them back. A pity that he's arriving well after those units were at their most dominant.
Tumblr media
Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons #3 still isn't giving me much to write home about, but the kaiju cult creeping to the forefront intrigues. Also cool to see Ebirah in a starring role.
youtube
Marubeni, one of Japan's biggest general trading companies, put out a bizarre commercial featuring samurai, zombies, a meteor, and a refurbished GMK King Ghidorah. The ad now has English subtitles, and you can watch a Ghidorah-centric behind-the-scenes video here.
Tumblr media
I cannot believe I have more Cleopatra Entertainment fuckery to report on with regards to their Shin Ultraman releases, but they're truly trying to take the "Worst Film Company of 2023" title from the members of the AMPTP. Their third attempt at a barebones disc is starting to reach customers... but the ones who already received the initial replacement disc are being told no more will be sent. @starestream is trying to figure out if they'll be selling the third edition on their site, since it seems buying it anywhere else is a gamble. (Physically, the third edition looks almost the same as the first two, set apart only by the "SUBTITLED" text on the disc.) Either way, it's another blow to a movie that truly doesn't deserve this.

holy. fuckin'. DAMN. I was pretty good at predicting the plot so far, but this episode proved that stampede is going in a whole new direction for real. spoilers for ep 9!!! (and manga a bit)
first of all, we still haven't got a full story of the great fall, but I think it's something they'll reveal in this season, probably during confrontation with knives. and still no scar reveal!! I'm angy but it's something that could be relevant to the standoff with knives, hope we'll get it
the piano scene... oh we're eating GOOD, it's just so wholesome but goes to confirm my theory that twins weren't completely fine on the ship. vash feeling useless because he can't do cool plant shit, knives envying vash for being good at human shit.... oh it's great
so glad knives is getting proper characterization and not just "he evil because he evil"! the fear, the hurt, the genuine care for vash, but then frustration with him – it's right there and I'm eating it up so yummy
the way they recontextualized vash's arm loss is GORGEOUS! I've seen ppl reading this scene differently, but to me it was an act of care from naï. he looks really scared for a reason: we see that the gate consumed all matter, including the hand. vash couldn't control it, so it would only grow bigger and destroy him. NAÏ REALIZED THIS AND SAVED VASH THE ONLY WAY HE COULD
he didn't want to fight him, this was not an act of anger, like in previous versions. all he cared about in that moment was saving his twin..... and what did he get in return? a gun pointed to his face. a gun he gave vash to kill human scum. oh, the DRAMA
ahem, now to the less intense stuff
homeboy has so much trauma, like, damn... how is he gonna fit any more from his impending epic brother fight...... I'm quite curious on how they're gonna characterize him in the next season. concidering that we're taking off earlier than previous versions, he might end up with the same unhinged vibe 98' vash had, as a coping mechanism (if depression didn't work, try dissociation and silliness). but then it would be even more interesting to see meryl's and wolfwood's reactions: they knew him before the accident and saw the big sad
vash has sense in the prosthetic arm, so it must've hurt when he damaged it... probably it hurts less than the real one, and it's clearly painless to take off. but the hand seems to be rather sensitive and fic writers are gonna go crazy for this
age reveal! also brad and luida being in cryosleep makes sense, I was racking my brain on how they're still alive. seems like they're using much more plant power tho... both for cryo and the vegetation, while in manga they tried to keep it as low as possible and send signals to earth
saw someone say that they're probably not doing that here because the earth is destroyed... could be that they decided to go the hard way. but in the manga the earth was still fucked, and it wasn't clear if they communicated with the ppl left on the planet or the fleet that was in some new place. what I'm saying is, there is a possibility that they are looking for help in stampede, we just don't know it yet
meryl was so cute! go off, comedy relief goofy girl, while you can, there is more trauma coming your way :3 yeah, enjoy roberto calling you by your first name... oh it would be such a shame if he gave you his derringer before his untimely death..........
pretty weird that nobody knows why they fell on no man's land, but ppl probably were too ashamed of their past and 150 years later the new generation is oblivious. also so funny that luida has to explain what vegies are..... they have so many plants but haven't see any plants
tbh I wasn't expecting the zazie twist at all, but I'm excited! they are SO gender in stampede, might be the best redesign in the series, love me a genderless bug creature with bold fashion choices. really cool to see that storyline adapted, it was barely touched upon in the last volumes of trimax
btw the multiple bullets story about a plant, worm and human who went around figuring out if their species could coexist and just.... creating this foud family and then building a town there all were equal...... that's my favorite mb story for sure
wolfwood saying "I'm not your friend"... I know what you are. and we got a "you'll have to decide one day"... oh oh the misery, but the context was lacking. it just doesn't hit the same when he isn't daring vash to shoot him in the most homoerotic way possible. on and he looks so goofy trying to ride with his cross
in the last ep's rant I assumed that luida lied about rem saving everybody for some reason?? but no, she actually saved them, I just got a bit confused
so, as I predicted, the gang separated (tho not because of vash) and by the end of the next episode vash'll be in july and meet naï. the poster, man.... that gorgeous futuristic city is getting obliterated for sure
btw vash's gate being opposite to knives and sort of a black hole is nothing new. but there are new layers to this, like vash willingly giving away energy, but destroying things against his will, and knives with the opposite of this. ying yan twins go brrrr

✐BOTH❦ - Levi Ackerman x Fem Reader x Hanji Zoe
Tumblr media
TW: sexual topic, yelling, crying, pregnancy, blood, angst, my own version of timeskip Levi and Hanji (that means this may not be connected to the manga/anime plot-- but may contain some spoilers)
※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※※
(Y/N)~your name
(L/N)~last name
(F/C)~favorite color
(A/N)~author's note
P.O.V~point of view
Y/N's P.O.V
My name is (Y/N)(L/N), I am the girlfriend of Levi Ackerman .
We have been in a relationship for 3 years now.
I'm currently pregnant with Levi's child, 2 months to be exact.
I've been keeping my pregnancy a secret.
I didn't tell anybody about my pregnancy yet, even to my best friend Hanji.
I want Levi and I would be the first person to know about this exciting news, I am so excited and nervous to tell this to Levi because of his behavior recently, he would always come home late and drunk, and he is been more cold towards me.
I know, titans had been extinct so it's rightful for him to take some rest and loosen up, but I think his behavior is too much.
It's 12:35 at midnight and I still haven't slept because I want to eat dinner together with Levi. The food is getting cold but I still waited and did not eat. I will only eat once Levi come home.
Yeah, I know this is bad for me and the baby but I really don't want to eat if Levi was not here to eat with me.
I heard the sound of keys and the door knob being opened. When the door is finally open, there I see my boyfriend Levi, drunk again.
"hey levi are you okay?, did you eat already?" I ask him worriedly even though he act like this I still love him. I know I should be tough sometimes, but I just can't find it in my heart to be tough on him.
We used to be a happy couple. I don't know if it's just me, but once the titans have gone extinct, everything seems to fall apart.
"shut up!" Levi screamed to me "you're so f*cking annoying, no wonder I only use you for pleasure"Levi said to me, I looked at him with furrowed eyebrows. I try to not cry and think that he only said that because he is drunk, he can't really mean it right?
"I-I'm sorry, let's just sleep"I said stuttering. I just wanna hug him while listening to his heartbeat... Like we used to do... that would surely make me feel better.
I then feel him slap my cheek so hard that make me sit on the floor while holding my cheek, the tears that I been holding finally escaped my eyes.
Wait no... This isn't the levi I know, he's just under the influence right? Am I too blind? Do I really deserve this?
I look up to see levi going to our shared bedroom to sleep, I just sob there thinking what did I do wrong. Why did we end up like this, Am I a bad girlfriend, is there something I didn't give him?
I then hear a phone notification sound indicating that there is a new message.
Since the titans have gone extinct, people are focusing on creating things that will make life easier, one of those are smart phones.
I slowly enter our shared bedroom to see Levi sleeping, I grab Levi's phone in the table beside our bed, I open the phone to see this;
Petra:
hi babe, where are you? are you busy?,come to my apartment let's watch some movies
Levi:
Yeah sure babe but I don't think where only watching movies I'm on my way, don't wear any underwear, that's an order.
Petra:
*picture of petra naked*
Levi:
Good girl wait me there
*new message*
Petra:
Hey babe did you arrive safely?and babe don't forget your promise that you're gonna break up with that slut
*seen*
I can't believe what I'm seeing.
I can't believe Levi was cheating on me... Am I really that blind... For love?
I don't even know who this Petra girl was.
Levi, the father of my child... The man that promised me he'll love me till death...
I quickly put all of my clothes and stuff on a duffle bag, yeah I love Levi but I love my child more... I'm done packing every single thing. I put my things in my (F/C) car and got back to our house to write a letter for Levi ;
Levi
As I gather the pieces of my shattered heart, I come to terms with a painful truth - your love for me has faded into the abyss of uncertainty. I question if you ever loved me at all, the echoes of doubt gnawing at my soul. In this moment, I find the strength to sever the ties that bind us, to walk away from what was once our shared world.
I want you to know that I will no longer intrude upon your life. No more texts or calls to disrupt your days, no more attempts to bridge the chasm that has grown between us. I promise to step back, to let go of the dreams we once held dear.
Yet, as I bear this burden alone, there is something I must share with you. Levi, I am carrying your child, and I cannot contain the mix of emotions that consume me. Amidst the heartache, there is a glimmer of excitement - the prospect of being parents together. But I fear that my hope is misplaced, that you will not share the same joy upon hearing this news.
I find myself torn between love and heartbreak, holding onto a love that may never return. As I bid my final farewell, know that my love for you was real, genuine, and raw. I cherished every moment we shared, and I will cherish the memory of what could have been.
Farewell, Levi. I loved you, and perhaps I always will.
~(Y/N)
I entered my car with a red nose and eyes. Sniffing on the way, I drove to Hanji's house sobbing and hoping she is still awake at this time.
I arrived at Hanji's house at 1:58 at midnight. I knock at hanji's front door several times trying to wake her up.
The front door opened revealing a bedhead hanji, I came in and hugged her tightly while sobbing.
"(Y/N)? ohh my gosh are you ok? Why is my baby crying?" hanji said rubbing my back as we hugged.
"L-Levi was cheating on m-me" I say stuttering while sobbing and hiccuping.
"shhhh shhh calm down (Y/N) this stress is not good for the baby" hanji said, I back away a little bit shocked that she know that I'm pregnant. I paused for a few seconds.
"How..." was all that is able to come up to my mouth.
She hugged me again while massaging my back.
" Oh come on (Y/N) I'm a scientist-doctor. Do you really think I wouldn't notice your weird behavior recently? Mood swings, cravings, vomiting, and many more weird things you've done recently? " she said smiling at me.
"y-yeah I kind of forgot about that " I said still sniffing slightly.
" Come on (Y/N) let's sit on the couch and talk about this" hanji said dragging me to the couch.
We sat on her couch. "so what exactly happened?" she asked me with furrowed eyebrows and a soft voice.
I told her what happened. Levi cheating on me, Levi slapping me, and me leaving... so practically... everything. I began to tear up again while she hugged me trying her best to comfort me.
"you can sleep in my room, if it is okay with you, we can share the bed, but if you don't want to sleep together, I'm fine on the couch you go to sleep in the bed" she said.
" Sharing the bed is f-fine" I said still stuttering because I just finished crying.
Hanji gave me one of her T-shirt and shorts that are oversized to me because I was short and she was way more taller than me, she let me wear it because she says that it will look good in me (sorry if you're tall A/N)
I entered Hanji's bedroom to see Hanji with red sports bra and black sweat pants, I don't know why but the sight makes me blush
'no this is wrong she is a girl and I'm also a girl, we literally just got cheated on' I mentally scold my self for blushing.
I am so confused of what I'm feeling, I shouldn't feel this way... Right..?
"oh (Y/N) come on let's sleep it's already 2 am" Hanji said glancing at the clock on the table beside her bed.
I lay down facing away from her.
I soon felt Hanji lay beside me, and before I drifted to sleep I felt Hanji's hand slip in my waist...then I fall asleep...

“ ...When I wear my favorite clothes, I feel at ease. It's the only time I don't see a version of myself I hate. ”
Boys Run the Riot is a manga series written by Keito Gaku. It intrigued me because I learned of its protagonist, who is a young transgender man. The representation seemed good and I knew it wouldn't take too long to read, so I decided to give it a shot.
Tumblr media
The protagonist of Boys Run the Riot is Ryo Watari, a 16-year-old high schooler who is a transgender man. He becomes friends with Jin Sato, who is a transfer student and an outcast.
Jin is the first person who Ryo comes out to. After this, Jin tells Ryo about his wish to create a brand that sells unique clothing. While Ryo is initially hesitant about this idea, the two decide to go for it. This is with the help of a classmate, who is the sole member of the school's photography club. After some pondering, Ryo comes up with the name for their clothing brand: Boys Run the Riot.

The main characters in Boys Run the Riot are somewhat relatable, and they're very lovable. As a transgender person, I especially found myself relating to Ryo.
There are a lot of relationships throughout this series, both good ones and bad ones, with peers and with superiors. I found myself loving the advice that the main characters got from their superiors throughout this series. Not because it was always wise and thoughtful, but because it was messy and they often contradicted themselves. The adults are struggling with how to live correctly, just as the teenagers are. It's hard to be queer, and it isn't much easier to try running a business as a high schooler. Even as the boys received advice from their elders, they formed their own opinions and did things their own way.
The youth in Boys Run the Riot are fairly realistic. I've never been to Japan, but the way Ryo and Jin are treated is reminiscent of what I'd seen in an American school. In addition to this, the main characters are generally realistic when dealing with conflict. They all react differently, and they almost always act in a way that is immature.
As a transgender person, I long for a relationship like that which is between Ryo and Jin. While the focus of this story is on Ryo, the two are equally supportive of each other. Jin isn't just there as a character to support Ryo.
Ryo struggles with coming out to people—a relatable struggle for all transgender people. In regards to this, he acts in a way that I would consider realistic. There were times when Ryo's dysphoria and anxiety struck very close to home for me. I don't consider myself a very empathetic person, but I found myself feeling emotional for Ryo.
Tumblr media
I loved Boys Run the Riot very much. However, this doesn't mean that it's free from my criticism.
As an American, I don't know much about Japanese tropes and stereotypes. However, I have consumed a lot of Japanese media regarding transgender people. With this being said, I have noticed that most of the transgender people in Japanese media are sexually assaulted. Why this is, I do not know.
While the series is altogether easy to understand and follow, I got completely lost at the bonus story. I still don't know whether that was Ryo or a new character.
Tumblr media
Overall, I enjoyed reading Boys Run the Riot very much. It kept my attention and it kept me engaged. It was mostly easy to understand and follow. The characters were likable and mostly realistic.
I rate Boys Run the Riot a perfect 5 stars.

This is gonna be another long-ish spoiler post for F/SR, so don't click if you haven't learned Rider's True Name yet
Also slight spoilers for Fate/Extra CCC Foxtail and maybe Shimousa but those are old enough that I doubt people care
I really need to hear the opinion of someone who doesn't know much about Fate play Samurai Remnant. I feel like most of us where able to guess a lot of the new Servants based off connections they had to pre-established ones. Rider's probably one of two exceptions because her reveal is supposed to be this huge "what the fuck" moment - and it is, but I feel like that mostly hinges on the player knowing Fate's version of Minomoto-no-Raikou.
Ushi Gozen has been teased for years. Raikou's always been one of the many Servants that mentions how her Berserker Saint Graph isn't the only one we might aee of her (edit 1: I didn't play FGO when it first released so I didn't know this, but apparently Ushi actually shows up in the same event Raikou's introduced in). In Foxtail, we see her used as a prarallel to Suzuka, since both have connections to Oni. The most prominent tease is in Shimousa, where we actually see Ushi Gozen appear, but with the same design as Raikou for budget reasons I guess (edit 2: No we don't, that's just Raikou, but she has the Rider class so I misremembered her there as Ushi Gozen). And now she's actually here! She gets her own game! And she looks...
Tumblr media
Girl what the fuck happened to you
I really like both of her designs to be honest. She's one of the few Servants to be wearing actual samurai armor, and she's the first to wear the helmet too I'm pretty sure. Then after Saber kicks the shit out of her, the armor falls apart and we see that she's in a much worse state than any of us expected. Her hair's cut short, her eyes are dead with noticeable bags, her skin's paler than it was before, and she barely looks like she's eaten anything. Those last two could also be said about Raikou (Raita for the love of god learn to draw human women properly) but on Rider they're noticeably worse. Also she seems crazier than her Berserker form, albeit a different kind of crazy.
When we fight her the second time in Chapter 5, she shows up with these awesome robot-like spider legs reminiscent of what Ushi-oni are usually described with. She doesn't look human because her humanity was seemingly beaten out of her. Raikou tends to suffer from what I like to call "the Altera Problem", where if used right she can be a really genuine and badass character, but 90% of the time she's used for jokes and to get people's dicks hard. However in things like Foxtail, or Shimousa (which is even more apparent in the manga), or Heian-Kyo we get to see her for how she really is, which is A) terrifying and B) a hero worthy of going down as one of humanity's best. Rider is only that first one. No jokes, no big tits, just pure unadulturated "you're gonna die" energy.
Rider's the first Servant we ever see in Samurai Remnant. She's the first one Iori encounters, leveling his house in the prologue and acting as the tutorial boss to show the player "hey you can't fucking take these guys on", and in the teaser trailer (which shows that scene) she's one of three Servants who are actually shown to us - the other two being SR's Saber and everyone's favorite bisexual dimension hopper, Musashi. I could write a whole other post about Shousetsu and Iori (maybe I will who knows) but Rider follows their dynamic. She's a strong parallel to Saber. Fuck she basically is Saber if they didn't have people like Ototachibana-Hime and Iori to keep them grounded.
All of the new Servants are super cool (with the exception of Caster that bitch ass nerd), but I think Rider's possibly the coolest. I mean, I've been wanting Samson since I got into Fate and you haven't seen me make any real posts about him because Minamoto-no-Raikou, one of my least favorite Servants, has got me in a vicegrip. I don't know if she's my favorite, but I'll definitely be saving for if she ever comes into FGO

Warning for mention of abuse
Tumblr media
This isn't too relevant to my main point, but I am interested in the MBTI and decided to break down Goemon's personality from both the manga and the anime. Something interesting I've found is that they have the same personality (INFJ), and extremely similar enneagrams (Manga - 2w1, Anime - 1w2). However, the similarities do not end there. After thinking about it, and going over the manga and anime's canon, it seems that Goemon from the manga and anime are in fact the same person (in more than just name), but with different responses to trauma. I personally headcanon that both started off as warm, loving individuals who were abused into becoming the people they are today (as evident by Anime Goemon's subtle yet deep compassion and care for others, that really begins to show itself once Momochi is dead and he makes true friends). I want to go over what I have concluded, and would like to hear other's insights. (Also please tell me if I have gotten anything about Manga Goemon wrong, Anime Goemon is my area of expertise)
Tumblr media
I will begin by going over their core similarities:
Both grew up in abusive homes, and this in turn has had an impact on their social skills and relationships with others (Manga Goemon strengthened his social skills and became extremely kind and warm, while Anime Goemon's social skills suffered and he became colder)
Both have the same core values in regards to friendship, justice, and various other morals
Both present a dishonest version of themselves to the world as a defense mechanism (more on this later, but Manga Goemon pretends he's okay when he's not, while Anime Goemon pretends he wasn't hurt in the first place)
Both want people in their lives, and for someone to care about them
Both do not want to needlessly kill despite being assassins (in the anime, this can be seen with Goemon putting off killing Lupin and showing a "demonstration of mercy" which allowed Lupin to get away), and do not belong in the profession
Both are disturbed by their master's cruel treatment of the bird
Both have healed from their trauma by letting people into their lives
Both have inappropriate emotional outbursts, due in part to their underlying trauma (Manga Goemon can be stuck up on justice and honesty, while Anime Goemon can be easily angered by minor inconveniences)
Now, as for differences:
Tumblr media
Manga Goemon:
Is overly accommodating
Needs to be with others, even if they violate his values (he merely swapped his masters for Lupin, rather than going off on his own)
Sacrifices his needs to be with others
Suppresses his feelings with a smile
Is afraid of being alone
Pretends he's happy when he's not
Tumblr media
As for Anime Goemon:
He is overly hostile
He pushes people away too easily, if he feels his independence or morals are at risk
He sacrifices his relationships with others to be himself
He suppresses his feelings with anger
He is afraid of being hurt
He pretends he's stoic when he's not (a great example of this was in Episode 13 when Lupin faked his death, he initially felt devastated until snapping back to his usual demeanor when he realized that Jigen was watching him, and it makes me wonder if Momochi had any part in "training" him to do this)
They are like mirror versions of one another, with one taking in the world to heal from trauma, and the other pushing out the world. Manga Goemon is heavily dependent on relationships with others to feel stable, and alters himself to be of use and worth keeping around. Anime Goemon is heavily dependent on his independence to feel stable, and alters his relationships to maintain his autonomy. Manga Goemon responds to trauma with happiness and putting on a smile, while Anime Goemon responds to trauma with anger.
The interesting thing though is that both approaches are flawed. Manga Goemon does not find a happy ending from the continuous suppression of his morals and feelings, and he loses himself for the sake of ensuring that he is loved and has someone, anyone, in his life. Anime Goemon's attempts at isolating himself from the world make him miserable and unhappy, in stark contrast to the joyful and silly person he normally is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anime Goemon, however, does find a happy ending. He gradually works on allowing people into his life over the course of Part 1, and directly addresses his flaws and shortcomings. He works on his anger by maintaining his calm and trusting in Lupin, which is demonstrated in the train conductor episode. He works on allowing others into his life, and gradually spends more time with Lupin and friends. He becomes much more emotionally expressive, with lines such as "We're afraid of him, too." He is no longer as afraid of being hurt, and is willing to take the risk for the sake of friendship, love, and intimacy. He gradually becomes less stoic, and openly displays his joy at silly things like impersonating a police officer, or a chef, or a edo period samurai.
Tumblr media
I love how Part 1 has this subtle message of it being possible to recover from trauma, and that better times await for those who keep trying. As for Manga Goemon, he needs a hug

Chapter 104 thoughts
I'm back from posting purgatory and have rewritten, more or less, what Tumblr deleted, so now it's time for my favorite game: Ina Tries To Figure Out What The Fuck Happened In The Latest Noragami Chapter. Spoilers under the cut.
So at the beginning we see trash dad cut himself free from Fujisaki and revert to his original form, while Fujisaki wakes up in Yukine's old house, far from home. I'm really interested to see how much he knows, which I said last time--whether he was aware he was being used or if he's basically been unconscious for the past year. I think he has to be aware on some level, because he knows Father's true name and has to invoke it to summon him from Yomi, but it would also be funny if he flies into a panic, follows the newly created lake, and ends up with the main cast. How far are they from the house, anyway?
Come to think of it, I've been reading Alive since last month (Adachitoka's first manga, which was written by their mentor while they drew the art) and while I'm not done yet, the north of Japan features prominently as a setting for that story and as the final showdown for this one. I'm not sure why, maybe they're from there, but it's interesting.
I'm so glad Yato slammed into trash dad after he insulted Mizuchi. It shows he does recognize her as a victim, and is willing to let things mend between them, since she's had her own character arc since Yato released her name. Don't get me wrong, that was still the right choice for him at the time--but they've both changed since then. And I always love the character development in this manga so this had me bouncing in my seat.
YATO ALSO SAYING HE'S NOTHING BUT A DEAD PERSON LIKE YESSSSSS GET HIM GET HIM KILL HIS MISERABLE ASS
Ahem. I wish Yato had been able to land at least one punch on this horrible man, but it's time for a shounen powerup.
Using the koto no ha on himself grants trash dad access to Izanami/Izanagi level powers, which I think is a temporary powerup that will end with Izanami taking him back to Yomi, because of how he can "feel her breath" on his neck. He plans to then escape again, and possess another body.
This new power is an ass pull as fast-moon put it, but it's also not the first of its kind in Noragami. Think back to Yukine getting cut in half and becoming a hafuri, Amaterasu appearing out of nowhere to give Hiyori the hint that saved Yato's life in Yomi, and how the main characters were saved from the covenant which provided the entire basis for the current arc (due to unresolved tensions between them and the rest of heaven). Basically, in Noragami these things happen with good reason and/or hugely impact the rest of the story, so I think it's best to wait and see how this trash dad development plays out before making judgments on how it affects the writing quality.
There's an old Noragami theory that Father is Izanagi, or stole his power, and it's been mostly dismissed in recent years (but there's an echodrops post about it here if you're interested in the points it made) and even more so since we got snippets of his backstory, but I think it's worth bringing back up now. Izanagi has been suspiciously absent from the manga, and I'm not sure he's even been mentioned, so I wonder if the koto no ha ties into that somehow. Honestly if Izanami killed him in this version of the story and used his power to make the koto no ha, good for her.
Anyway, trash dad reveals he's not just some human who came back from the dead. He can use these powers of creation; it's unclear whether he's used them before, but Yato has never seen him do so--Mizuchi seems to know what he's doing, but it's also unclear whether she's seen it either. I said years ago I don't think it was easy as him just returning from the dead and being granted godlike powers, but I haven't been insistent on it so much because I did a reread of the official translation two years ago and that version heavily implies the only thing trash dad did to get his powers was come back from the dead. I wonder how they'll reconcile that when this volume gets translated (please hold for another 2 years, lmfao).
Is this Izanagi's power, or Izanami's? Did he steal Izanagi's powers next after he paid Izanami a visit? Did he know what using the koto no ha on himself would do? Was it an educated guess based on Izanami's power? Is it still possible he could be a reincarnated Izanagi that believed himself to be human? I don't know if I'd like that last one, but these are the questions I hope to have answered.
Taking a brief detour to discuss that Kiun and Mayu have joined forces to look for their gods, and Ookuninushi is alive but has with him three freshly reincarnated gods--Yatagarasu, Kagutsuchi, and Shinatsuhiko. I'm shocked he lived and they died, but it may lead to an interesting change in heaven where he has to reconcile how they threw away their shinki lives even after they were explicitly told not to use them. The way heaven (and most gods) treat their shinki as not people but disposable tools has been a long-running theme of this manga, and it's been clear larger-scale changes need to be made.
So back to the main event, trash dad creates a biblical sort of flood, but one that brings images of the past. Alongside the tree where a young Yato named Sakura, we also see a cottage and a multi-level house. The cottage may be where Yato and Hiiro were raised, or it might be the one from the Father flashbacks: Check them out side by side:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(103-2; page 1 [Father and Kaya village]; 104, page 21; 45, page 33 [Yato, Hiiro, Father cottage] if you want to check for yourself)
Next, there's that multi-story building, which could be the place where Yato made his first kills, or Hiyori's grandmother's house. There isn't much visible, so it's hard to tell, but here's another side by side:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(46, page 9 [where Yato made his first kills]; 104, page 21; 85, page 42 [Hiyori's grandmother's house])
If this enchanted world functions similarly to Hiyori viewing Yato's past while he's asleep, Hiyori will get to experience trash dad's past as it really happened. I've mentioned before it bothers me how the gravekeeper has been narrating the events even though he wasn't present for any of them, so it's entirely likely Father manipulated the facts of his history, or they naturally changed over the course of a thousand years.
I also think Hiyori could find out trash dad's weak point, his true name, if/when she witnesses his past. She could then become his lifeline and decide to let the secret die with her. Or he could possess her, but I'm being optimistic.
The tree she sees is the tree where Yato named Sakura, but it could also have some significance to Father and Kaya; if the cottage where he raised Yato and Hiiro was in the same general location as that village, he could have some memories there.
So if we get Hiyori and Sakura interaction I will cry. If we get Hiyori and Kaya interaction I will also cry.
Next few chapters I'm really excited to see where this enchanted lake dimension thing goes. Yukine could also be caught up in it, depending on how far it has spread, and it'll be interesting to see how Amaterasu reacts to it too.
I don't normally say this, but reblogs are appreciated. This post required a lot of skimming older chapters to tie my thoughts together, and my original draft got half erased when I was just finishing it up so I had to rewrite a lot of it. Plus it seems like everyone was pretty confused by the events of this chapter, so a reblog would help to spread it around and hopefully shed some light on the events. Thanks!

how common is it for adaptations to give stone monkey a (usually female) friend on flowerfruit mountain? i've noticed it in a couple adaptations and wonder if it comes from a specific adaptation
Funny enough YES!
At least I think we can all think of one man in particular for the common grey-fur monkey companion that Shihou/Wukong has...
And that is Tezuka Osamu!
I think it starts with his manga My SonGoku ぼくの孫悟空.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This was first published in 1952 and has been quite influential in Japanese interpretations of Sun Wukong.
He was actually influenced by Tessen Koshu who made the Princess Iron Fan cartoon 铁扇公主 in 1941 with that kind of rubber hose kind of art style.
Tumblr media
Anyway, the main point is that this guy made a certain character at the start of his manga before Wukong left for his training.
"While Biko, a monkey born from a stone, starts as a shy crybaby, he becomes the king of the monkeys with the encouragement of a gentle sister monkey, LinLin. He learns Senjutsu, becomes Son Goku, and goes on a rampage in Heaven...
Sister edition of "Boku no Son Goku", girls' manga version "Journey to the West"."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Otherwise known as RinRin depending on how you translate it. Or even DeeDee or Reina. Depends on what you are looking at.
"RinRin-chan" The tomboyish monkey to the main character. She names the stone monkey Biko and takes care of him as an older sister."
I haven't read the manga (I don't know Japanese) nor do I understand how manga history in how this is both a "Hitomi" (Akita Shoten) 1960 serialization but I do know she is credited to Tezuka Osamu. And her influence has been in serial more of a couple of Japanese Xiyouji iterations.
Her next appearance being in ALAKAZAN THE GREAT Saiyuki ぼくの孫悟空 which was made in 1960. This was written by Baku Yumemakura who was a fan of Tezuka Osamu's works where she goes by RinRin. A pretty one-to-one look from what she looked like in the manga
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is also some inspiration in the 1967 Goku's Great Adventures 悟空の大冒険 but any female side character was replaced with a fairy-like person Tatsuko. She isn't Rinrin of course but I think that since this was also credited to Tezuka Osamu that having a pink-themed older sister character was what inspired her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There was also a female monkey by the name of Fanya from the 1999 Magic Monkey モンキーマジックTV series that is more well-known for its video game. Not named Rinrin at all but... look at her. She gets TWO flowers in her hair and a pink theme. I know flowers and pink aren't the most creative choice for a girl monkey but that is a clear inspiration.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She wasn't really seen by name until the 2003 movie, My Son Goku ぼくの孫悟空 where she was brought back by where she goes by Reina in the eng subs! Here her name is slightly different but I think that this might be my favorite version of her thus far! She is such a caring person and while he isn't in the movie that long she plays such an impactful role!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are mostly Japanese interpretations because of their tie with the My SonGoku manga but there are a few more giving Wukong a grey monkey friend in his Shihou phase in Chinese interpretations.
The only one I can think of that can be a real nod of acknowledgment is really 1999 Legends of the Monkey King 西游记 with an unnamed girl monkey (if she does have a name please let me know I've never learned it!) Love the change from pink to yellow, we are getting creative here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are all the examples I can think of at least in the media I've personally seen!
The only grey-furred sidekick thus far was LiuEr Mihou from Monkey King 2009 美猴王. I think this one might be more coincidental with the grey fur and the pink theme but that would be hilarious if it was to fit the 'childhood best friend' card that Rinrin, a completely different character, has set.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I do find some comments on how LiuEr in this version took RINRIN'S place as the childhood best friend trope. Like that idea of Wukong in his Stone Monkey phase of life having a Best friend is now tied to the image of Rinrin! It is funny to think that out of all the interactions of giving Wukong sidekicks, this one seems to be a re-occurring one consistently. Sadly I haven't seen another version in nearly 20 years!! We've been deprived!
Will we see this character again soon? Hard to say considering it's been so long but I love that in at least 3 different Japanese Xiyouji interactions and a general nod in acknowledgment in 2 as well.
Tumblr media
Until we see you again beautiful queen!

Why I think it's high time Natsu and Lucy got together
One of the first post I made on this blog was two years ago when NaLu made it into tumblr's top 100 ships that year. I made another post last year when they made the list. Now after another year I'm making this post because they didn't make it into the list this year.
Now I understand that whether a ship makes it into the top 100 on a platform like Tumblr says absolutely nothing about the ship, but it does say something about the fandom around that ship. When NaLu did make it into the list it felt good, not because it meant the ship was somewhat popular but rather it meant the fandom was active. It meant people still cared.
And I understand that there are still a lot of talented people making art or doing analysis or just sharing their thoughts on NaLu but there is very little to talk about. The fandom is tired and frustrated, rightfully so. NaLu not making it into the top 100 is a reflection of that.
Seeing that list come out made me realise that it has been two years since I because active in the fandom, which was around the time I started reading 100 years quest. Two years.... of absolutely nothing.
Let me make one thing clear, I don't doubt Natsu and Lucy will end up together. You have to misunderstand so much of fairy tail to think they might not end up together. I'm not worried about if it will happen, I'm worried about when and how.
100 years quest has given NaLu fans scraps. It has given us one or two good moments and a few panels of Lucy saying Natsu's name with a worried expression on her face and a sea full of fanservice and absolute nonsense. Now I love slow burn, I really do but NaLu is something beyond that.
Male dominated fandom spaces like the fandom for a shonen manga have a tendency to look down on romance and shipping. Shipping is seen as something awful and sheer act of shipping two characters together means taking something vital away from those characters and reducing then to nothing. If you have been in shipping fandoms for a while I'm sure you would have come across posts or comments like these.
But the simple truth is, romance is part of fairy tail. It Always has been. It is part of the story and it is part of the characters' lives. Even though Gruvia also deserves more screen time I absolutely love the incredible positive influence Grey and Juvia had on each other. Seeing Grey slowly turn into someone who can be open about his feelings for Juvia felt great to wach. Gruvia fans have also written some of the best analysis of the characters in fairy tail that I've ever read. Romance has been unarguably vital part of both of these characters and both of them would be worse version of themselves without it.
Gruvia scenes also make a bit jealous. Because that's what NaLu is missing. Natsu as a character doesn't change that much. We learn more things about him but he rarely grows as a person. Whatever growth he had in the series is tied to Lucy. Natsu's effect on Lucy is a lot more clear but I think that's because it's easier to notice Lucy becoming more agressive than Natsu controlling himself.
The lack of romance has been detrimental to both Natsu and Lucy as a character. Romance and romantic relationship are part of most people's life and neither of them had the opportunity to properly experience that. They are the main characters of the series and for them to truly grow as characters they need to make progress in their relationship.
Romantic relationships takes time and effort and having the main protagonist go through all of that as they are on the 100 years quest can make for a really compelling narrative. But we aren't getting that because NaLu is reserved for last. I'm afraid they will get together in the final chapter and live "happily ever after" but there is no such thing as a happily ever after. Two people officially getting together is not the end of the relationship. Figuring out how to make a proper romantic relationship work will also help them grow as people. If they got together in the last chapter we will miss out on that.
If Natsu and Lucy only get together in the last chapter, their stories, their growth will feel incomplete. A romantic relationship will be good for them and it needs to happen as soon as possible.

hi bestie, I'm going to need your thoughts about BEAST. it doesn't matter how long. 🙏I find that LN very interesting plus my blorbo Odasaku is there TT
if you're up to the challenge of sharing most, if not all your unhinged thoughts about BEAST, I would greatly appreciate it.
If not, that's okay too. No pressure fr ❤️
This ask makes me stare at my computer screen in horror for the can of worms you've opened, my friend. I'm better now, but there was a point in time a couple years ago I carried my physical copy of the Beast LN with me everywhere in my school bag & called it my Bible. Needless to say its quite important to me. I wasn't sure how to approach this at first, but as I've been going I kind of ended up breaking it down by character. I will also say that I've read the LN and seen the movie, but I haven't read the entire manga yet, so if there's anything manga specific you were hoping I'd mention that I don't I apologize! This is comically long I am so sorry.
I will admit I kind of suck because, though Beast is primarily about the interactions between Atsushi and Akutagawa, I don't have much to say about either of them. But Beast is so so so refreshing to me to see some of the characters that I thought deserved better in canon receiving their time in the light. The interactions between Aku and Oda are everything to me, especially when Akutagawa has to babysit the kids, and through it he has to learn when to be gentle and when to be harsh. Its so so so important because you get to see that he can do both. The same Akutagawa who's first appearance in the main timeline is blowing up a police station without any care for civilian casualties is capable of gently playing with children, WITH his ability. It opens up a depth to his character that, at least at the time of Beast's official English translation coming out (I had it on Preorder lol), we didn't really get to see in the main timeline. It told me that there was so much more to see from him, more that Asagiri wanted to say about him, and not only made me really attached to his Beast version but made me enthusiastic to see what was to come from the main timeline for him.
Its kind of similar with Atsushi in Beast, if the opposite way. I was always a little disappointed with the anime's adaption of Atsushi, as he always felt a bit watered down to be a one-size-fits-all protagonist, when he has more character and snark in the manga that makes him so much more interesting. I don't love it for him because yanno that shit traumatizing, but I do for me enjoy having seen what happens when you put him in the mafia instead. Do you ever think about how he would have been like, 12, when he was recruited into the mafia? That's like 6 years earlier than in canon. This is assuming that Beast Dazai goes and picks him up at the same point in time that he acquires Akutawaga in the main timeline. (Aku was acquired when he was 14). So by the time of Beast's main plot, that gives Atsushi 6 years in the mafia to become the White Reaper, and what a name that is. To be associated with the death he's so afraid of. Ohh, he's interesting. I wish I had more to say about him. Honestly, beast aku and atsu are more my boyfriend @pmreaper's wheelhouse, and I highly recommend taking a look at his thoughts. Between the Orphanage and the Mafia, Beast Atsushi hasn't really seen much honest kindness, aside from Kyoka. And christ, the collar. I'll talk more about the collar later, but that does something to me. He goes from the orphanage causing him pain and problems about being the tiger when he doesn't even know, to a much more restrictive controlling pain when he does know. He's taught that being what he is just leads to being in pain and he has no control over it and it makes me miserable for him. Despite spending so much time fighting on the Mafia's behalf, on Dazai's behalf, this boy has no idea how to fight for himself.
I think that's a major difference between beast Atsu and Aku honestly. Akutagawa will fight for himself. He'll fight his way out of a bad situation. Beast Atsushi won't. That self pity of feeling he deserves it. Christ. Them. Their soft moments interacting together before everything goes to shit in Beast are everything to me. They're just kids from bad situations they understand each other. Their interactions in Beast stab me through the heart.
I don't have much to say about Gin but I want to mention her anyway. Mostly because I think she's the most mentally stable of the mafia members close to Dazai in Beast that we see (Chuuya, Atsu, Kyoka, Gin). She'd have a Keurig on her desk and make the best coffee on the floor. She's such a stark difference from her main timeline counterpart, too. Gin the mafia assassin and Gin the mafia secretary are so different, visually. But... this is a Gin that isn't fighting to survive in the same way. I think so much about how she was taken so that Dazai had some kind of control over Akutagawa without having him in the mafia. I think about how she decided Akutagawa wasn't ready to have her in his life again. About how she was ready to be killed for the Mafia. We barely see any of Gin in the main timeline, but we see so much of her here. Her loyalty to the mafia, her own feelings of betrayal, there's so much to her that we just haven't seen from the main timeline at all. I adore her. I want to see more of her. I like to think that after the events of Beast played out she stole a mafia helicopter and she and Kyoka flew off to Cancun on a girls trip to recover from All That Shit.
I generally ignore the Beast version of Chuuya the way he's presented in canon if I'm honest. And I quite actively ignore whatever the movie ending with the chains is because the fuck is that. Chuuya's presence in Beast canon is something that i acknowledge and then throw away. I have a very specific mental timeline of how Beast progresses in my head as far as where it diverges from the main timeline. In my heart, Atsushi is dragged into the mafia shortly before Dragon's Head Rush, possibly when the conflict is originally starting up in Yokohama, or some time during it. Somewhere in the 88 days before the final face-off against Shibusawa. (I have a lot of opinions on the nitty-gritty details of that timeline both in Beast and Main timeline but that's a not-right-now problem.) This is the event that, in the main timeline, Dazai ascends to executive. I believe that in the Beast timeline, during the DHR conflict is where he stages his coup to become the PM's boss. Which is... kind of a wild thing to do at 16, I guess, but this is a Dazai that has memories of the main timeline as well as of this world, so is he really mentally 16 at that point with the combined life experience? Anyway. Why do I mention this timeline when I'm talking about Chuuya? Because Dazai needed help staging that coup. Chuuya's help. He was well liked in the mafia even then (we can see Chuuya's own reputation was pretty damn good at this point as its not long after Stormbringer). I believe they had a more amicable relationship in the Beast timeline than in main timeline, and that this was calculated to make Chuuya's loyalty lie more with Dazai than the mafia at large so that the coup would work. But after Dazai is boss? Nothing. Cold and all-business once Dazai is in place to start playing with the entire city like his own personal barbie dolls to get everything in place to allow Oda to write his book. Whatever. Which leads to Chuuya's loyalty-hatred complex a bit but I have... a lot of opinions on that entire interaction between them that I don't really know how to articulate. But it fucking sucks.
As far as within the Mafia hierarchy, I think that very few people ever report to Dazai himself. Only Gin, Atsu, Chuuya, and maybe someone really trustworthy like Hirotsu. Chuuya is the boss's right hand in this, he's the second in command, above what a normal executive position would be. Dazai is busy making plans on his insanity corkboard trying to ensure this world stays perfect for Oda. He's busy scheming on what to do to make the mafia more powerful to ensure its reach can accomplish what he needs it to. He's busy doing all the meta-number-crunching to minmax his power so he can treat the world like a plaything. I think he leaves a lot of the normal day-to-day running the mafia to Chuuya, who acts more like the boss in the level of Mori in the main timeline, since the Mafia itself in Beast is like 3x the power it was in canon. Someone has to be keeping an eye on the city itself. I think the executives more of report to him than they would Dazai. It just becomes this really weird hierarchy of designated people leading what they need to so Dazai can focus on what he wants. Obviously none of this is supported in Beast canon at all its just what I believe in my whole heart. I also think that there may have been a point in time they tested something similar to the collar Atsushi is given with Chuuya to see if there was a way to shut down Corruption without Dazai needing to be involved. It failed and Chuuya was hospitalized for a week after and 100% made it Dazai's problem. Which, tangentially, do you ever think about the Beast aftermath? How if something comes up where Beast Chuuya has to use Corruption, there's no longer a way to stop it? Because I sure do.
This brings me down to more thoughts about Beast Dazai himself, who is such a wild character to me. He's everything normal timeline Dazai doesn't want to be. Oda wouldn't want this. Oda wouldn't want a world where so many people are miserable that don't have to be just for his sake. Its depressing, but main timeline Odasaku had chosen his time to die and was quite ready to do so. And main timeline Dazai? He just had to accept that. And grow beyond it. And learn how to create connections with others. But Beast Dazai? He swings the opposite. He doesn't try to recover, he's obsessive, he tears everyone else down into his misery with him to try to create a world that Oda can survive and write his novels in without ever thinking about the fact that Oda would never want that, would never ask for that, but he's on such a pedestal in Dazai's mind that its never considered. Its selfish. He thinks he's doing something for someone else but its so, so very selfish and frankly ridiculous. He chose to never really make any connections with anyone else. Oda of that universe doesn't even know who he is, other than the boss of the mafia that ruins people's lives. There's no connection. Beast Dazai is so untethered and doesn't see anything in that world as anything more than means to an end and I'm so, so obsessed with him. He's tragic. He's trying so hard to do something correctly and doesn't even understand what he's doing wrong because he's so caught up in saving the one person he's so fixated on. He's crafted an empire out of the mafia and couldn't care less about it. He's put himself into the shoes of a god and sacrificed every mortal comfort because of it. I have so much I could say about him but my brain is going to short circuit if I think about him for much longer. I'll probably talk more about him again when I finally reread Beast. I hate him more than I can explain. He's the most interesting man alive. He's no man at all. I'm in hell
Odasaku. Oda. He's still alive. He has even more orphans. Akutagawa is one of his orphans. He thinks he's the most normal guy but he's so, so weird. He trusts Akutagawa with his kids. He'll fight Akutagwa in the middle of the Agency as a training exercise. He probably has the most bland coffee order you can imagine. Anyone know that textpost about the guy that got the black coffee with the blueberry flavoring? The ordinary man with something deeply wrong with him? That's beast Oda. He wants to be a writer, he succeeds, he has a mafia boss obsessed with him and doesn't even know until said dude goes off and dies. I have NO idea what the fuck he was doing in the movie. I generally ignore the movie honestly. He's just some guy. This world was made for him and all he wants is to be ordinary. This world was made for him and he chooses to be mundane. This is a man that knows mortality well. That knows the best parts of life are the small ones. He wants to help people and he succeeds. He sees other people who had a past of violence, like he did growing as an assassin, and he helps them get out of it, he prevents it from happening, he offers care in a way those unused to receiving it can accept. He isn't perfect. He's just a guy. It makes him perfect. I want to kick a wall.
The agency in Beast and how they all rally together is so interesting as well. We don't really get to see them all in action together that often honestly and its a delight. I wish I had more to say about all of them. They're such a cohesive unit of strays and I love them.
I certainly have so much more I could say about Beast but this is already like, the length of an average one-shot fanfiction on AO3 just of my incoherent rambling. If there's anything you want me to talk more on please send another ask because this was a fucking blast to dig up a lot of my old thoughts. I have several unedited one-shot beast fics tucked into storage that maybe one day I'll share because they're all based off of my headcanons and personal beliefs on the timeline.
My boyfriend and I also have an ongoing project called Beastswap where we explore what happens to the characters if they start randomly popping between the two timelines in the post-Beast fallout after everything has settled a little and once I get my writing spark back there will definitely be some of that floating around as well.

Hey there!
I just read a couple of your reviews and analyses of Trigun Stampede and OMG we both have the almost exact same gripes and problems with it! Like the pacing is so weird, there’s no breathing room for the characters to develop and most of the interactions between the characters feel like either ham-fisted exposition or shallow lip-service and as messy and crowded as it feels so far it also feels so empty, and I’m not getting any of the emotional nuance or anything that made the original so compelling, among everything else, like almost completely getting rid of the spaghetti western aesthetic that makes Trigun such a unique beast, turning Meryl into a generic uwu seasonal waifu that actively fawns over Vash, how Vash’s design goes against everything that’s encoded into his original design, this Roberto guy that sucks the joy out of every scene he’s in and constantly bullies Meryl, the lack of meaningful emotional connections between each character and by extension the audience, among many other things that we both have problems with. And even Vash’s character feels…off, like an empty imitation, and I don’t know why, but it feels empty.
All in all it’s so far little more than a flashy, style over substance sci fi action anime at best, an utter mess at worst, and it’s nice to see someone who’s familiar with both the 98 anime and the manga can actually see and analyse the glaring flaws in a thoughtful, insightful way and can see past the glitzy animation, which at this point makes me think that Studio Orange were more concerned with showing off their fancy CGI tech than anything. I also feel like they’ve leant much more into the sci-fi part and made such drastic changes to characters like Meryl to appeal more to the Japanese audience as well as modern anime audiences in general and in the process sacrificed ALOT, what do you think?
Hello hello,
Sorry for the slow reply, I'm trying to crank though a few before the work week starts tomorrow and I have another busy week work ahead.
I'm sort of relieved that other people are really noticing other things with Stampede that are why they aren't really liking or enjoying it. It took me a few metas to really begin to get past the initial reaction of something bothering me and getting annoyed about it but not being able to articulate it in the first few episodes. The original manga and anime were the product of its time and referred back to other forms of media that someone born after 2000 likely would not have seen. It truly was a unique beast that was destined for niche fans in Japan and I don't think they predicted how huge it would get outside of the country. It is pretty much a form of media that Gen-X or Millennials would watch and get a lot of the references. The part that I miss the most was the spaghetti western aspect of it - I freakkin' loved those as a kid growing up and watched My Name is Nobody a lot on VHS. They are a weird period slice of media and if you were familiar with them it translated over so well to Trigun.
I've watched a ton of anime over the years and I'm still shocked that I'm this disappointed about a series that I loved over twenty years ago. The original was an odd duck when it came out but I think that was its special sauce; it was a beautiful onion that unpeeled to a deeply emotional series that really forced you to examine your morals and society. You cried in episode 23. Hard.
I'm with you - I feel this version of Vash feels empty. Yet, even six episodes in, I can't nail down why. He says similar things, he's shown to be able to do things but the best I can come up with is how he faces situations. In the original, he did run away from his problems, I mean he was doing it for over 100 years. But, he wasn't always running and would do his best to discretely do his part and have a less deadly outcome. Even if it meant getting gum stuck in a barrel or being tied up. He was incredibly friendly with people and joked around when possible and never stopped trying to look on the sunny side even when things were bleak. Manga Vash isn't as chipper, but when he helps out Livio pointing out that there is nothing better than eating food and being alive . . . he was a more supportive character. Meryl is a disappointment and no Milly - sighs. I can look back now and says that I clearly liked the original since it was an anime from the 90s that had TWO female characters who both brought things to the table, were competent and fed into the overall character growth of the entire core group. I 100% agree that the nuance and flavor of the original were completely sacrificed in the name of a 'serious' yet digestible sci fi action series. Yes, Meryl was indeed uwu-ized for a domestic audience and likely for international fans who like that type of character as well. Milly was cut because - well how do you explain Milly to a current anime audience? I'm trying to think of a contemporary character who is like her. Or a series she could be in? Gintama maybe? The series has good female characters but she's still too tall and not cute enough.
Actually, there is one series where I know she could work ~ but that cast of characters is already huge and if my theory is correct, both she and Meryl got gender swapped to male characters with slightly different flavors. And neither of them are reading the newspaper in this manga color panel.
Tumblr media
Stay tuned for a longer meta by me about how the shounen/diverse cast/bonkers humor aspect of Trigun lives on in Blood Blockade Battlefront.
Studio Orange wants Stampede to be pretty, sci fi and dazzle everyone. With my episode six review done, I've really added to that even more. Whatever the final product will be, it will lack all the elements of the original sources. It isn't about if the '98 anime was better or the manga, they are both good for different reasons and that's fine. But they answered the same core questions, asked the same moral dilemmas and brought in the same themes. They just got there in two different ways. I'd like Studio Orange to be successful, but I'm not keen on their choices and it will be interesting to see the result.
Either people will go and look up the original and if they aren't used to the 90s animation style go - ick - and not get further or hopefully, they will see that the 90s anime and manga went some very interesting directions narratively and it pays off to sit back, watch/read and then cry along the way. And realize that original OST for Trigun was a killer gem of the late '90s along with Escaflowne. I just sigh as if Studio Orange wanted it to have a more visual impact, they should have kept the more 90s chara designs to catch the attention in our saturated landscape. In the 90s it would have been harder to notice with similar styles but now, that spiky blond hair! Would have worked better!

Hi! I have a quick question about the Clear Card manga & the English translation. When Nakuru first explains to Yue why she & Spinel are back in Tomoeda, she refers to Yukito as "Tsukishiro-kun," but when we get to volume 9 and she's explaining she and Yukito made sweets, and later, when she's explaining his contract with the Tsukimine shrine, she calls him "Yukito." Is that change present in the original Japanese, or is it just in the Eng. version? Thanks!
Hello anon! Thank you for sending me this question, which is completely legit because we KNOW how the Eng translation sometimes can mess up, especially with names and such (Shinomoto turned into Shinohara, Hiiragizawa turned into Hasegawa, Syaoran being back to be "Li" for Sakura for one panel, naming Kaito as Mana out of the blue etc), but I'm happy to say: this time it isn't a mistake! 😁
Let's briefly show to everyone the visual proof of what you're talking about: I personally checked the tankobon scans because those are the definitive version of the story that we should always keep in consideration (yes, sometimes CLAMP or the editors themselves mess up on the serialization on Nakayoshi, or they change their mind on something, and they fix those mistakes in the tankobon release, which is the definitive one, unless stuff gets modified in further prints/releases).
Tumblr media
Volume 7, chapter 32: Nakuru just arrived in Tomoeda and she holds Yukito back in order to have a private talk with Yue about why she and Spinel are back in town. We can see here she calls him indeed "Tsukishiro-kun".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Volume 9, chapter 43/44: Sakura and Kero are at Yukito's house for a snack after school, and Nakuru is there with them too, along with Spinel. She'll be the one explaining to the beast guardians what Yukito did at Tsukimine Shrine. We can see in the panels above that she consistently calls Yukito "Yukito" now, and what's more surprising is that she straight up ditched any kind of honorifics for him, while she still keeps calling Touya "Touya-kun".
So yes, this isn't a translation mistake! If I can take this opportunity to make a couple of considerations about it, I'd say it's a beautiful way to show how close she grew with Yukito in the matter of the 2 volumes' time that passed ever since she came to Tomoeda. We haven't always seen them "on screen", but those two pretty much never separated this whole time, due to the "battery" remedy, and they had the chance to deepen their acquaintance of eachother and their bond too. I happened to come across some criticism about this depiction of their relationship in the past, or rather, of the "triangle relationship" depicted between her, Yukito and Touya, accusing Nakuru of being an "hindrance" to Touyuki's lovestory and crossing lines she shouldn't cross. Personally, while everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I've never seen their relationship that way. Nakuru's got literally the personality of a 5 years old little girl, she's loud, cheeky, always wants to be at the center of the attention, and so she wants to be "at the center" of TouYuki's attentions too, but I don't see malice in it. Suppi gently tried to make her understand when she was intruding too much (like with her proposal of the three of them going on a date, which to some might have even looked like a proposal for a threesome 😂and maybe it was, who knows), but I don't really see her behavior as an attempt to separate them or anything, more like a playful "hey, pay attention to me too". TouYuki's relationship keeps going strong, if the latest "power couple" developments are any indication! And in the middle of all of this, I really think she grew fond of Yukito as a brother, to the point of switching from last name to first name basis, and calling him without suffixes. And if you think about it, they somewhat are, brother and sister. They're both magical creatures, not really human, but taking human appearances and living as such. Both created by a strong magician, whom in his past life was called "Clow Reed", and now after being reincarnated is called "Eriol Hiiragizawa". Their particular bond, even magically, is basically what made possible the "battery remedy" that's saving Yukito's life and thus making him an active player/actor in this fateful story that is currently being told.
Off-topic but, I also want to briefly mention what a cute nickname Nakuru found for Kero-chan, which was left out from the Eng translation: Keroppi! 😂

~ Cyv's Manga Club ~
One Piece
Vol. 1 (Chapter 1 - 8)
Whew, this is a hefty one.
So, I just started reading JoJo, so you may think with such a long-running series on my plate, I wouldn't add an even longer one on top of that, but here we are. I am gonna start reading Spy x Family soon though, since that one is really popular right now and I think it would be good for me to have something to read that isn't an absolutely massive chonker of an epic tale. But yeah, JoJo and One Piece are gonna be my two ~big ones~ for the time being. So what do I think so far?
Well, first of all about the art, I gotta say I genuinely like it way, way more than I thought I would. The line variations and really bold line work in general make it look sooooo sick, and I'd only seen screenshots from the anime version of OP before, which, in my opinion, is way more boring and flat looking. So that immediately took me off guard in a pleasant way. I also really genuinely like Luffy's character so far. He's a really kind-hearted boy, but doesn't have the same problem I currently have with JoJo where that makes him feel like a generic good guy. He's just as mischievous and naive as he is good, but fortunately it's not at all in a way that makes him super annoying or way too dumb, he just feels like a kid with a huge heart who craves adventure, and I dig that a lot. Same story with most of the characters, honestly. Shanks seems like such a cool dude and I reeaaallly hope he returns at some point in the series to see what Luffy will eventually grow into, and him giving Luffy the straw hat bein the reason for it being so central to the iconography is so damn sweet. Zoro is a badass and Nami is super cunning, both without coming across as overly edgy or anything like that. Also, the way Zoro holds one of his swords in his mouth is the silliest shit I've ever seen but I can't help but absolutely love it, and on the opposite end, his backstory is really touching and immediately makes him so personable. Just a damn good crew so far. I'm sure that cast will grow with time, but as it stands, this little group being formed is feeling pretty cozy. I suppose the only character I had a problem with was Koby. I know he's a kid and I know he's supposed to be presented as young and timid, but whereas the other characters manage to showcase their tropes and personality traits without feeling forced, generic, or otherwise obnoxious, I can't exactly say the same for him. He did leave the story by the end of the volume, though, so I imagine if we see him again he'll have matured significantly.
The villains are absolute blast so far though. There have been a surprising amount of what appear to be smaller, less important adversaries introduced even in just this first volume, and they all stand out quite a lot. They all have this really charming "monster of the week" energy to them, with fun gimmicks that make them unique from each other. Captain Morgan with the weapon for an arm was a stand-out to me. It's almost the sentiment you find in a lot of fighting game character designs, where you're able to look at them and immediately tell exactly what this character is about, how they fight, how they act, so much just from elements of their design. Awesome stuff. I will say that one thing I'm really interested in finding out is how OP will manage to actually raise the stakes, specifically for Luffy. Right now, for all intents and purposes, the motherfucker might as well be indestructable. Bullets, punches, you name it, Luffy so blissfully takes them all with his stretchy body and can retaliate with no problem. I have no idea how the story will present something that actually poses him any real danger, but I'm excited to see.
So yeah! Stoked to be starting this goat of a manga and to see all it brings. It's so unabashedly goofy and fun but clearly has so much heart put into it, and I'm willing to go on whatever ride it takes me on. More updates to come soon.
