If you can only read 1 non-fiction and 1 fiction book for the rest of your life, what would it be? Why do you pick these books?
Do you have book or author recs to read?
Thank you :)
@curiousnonny
Well as a history fanatic, I’d want to choose All Quiet On The Western Front, just because it really does encapsulate how war should be looked at & I think it offers a very valuable perspective, especially one we rarely ever see in Western media. However, I’d want to choose that as my non-fiction, but it is a fictional story based on real events. Which feels like cheating but I honestly don’t read a lot of non-fiction, so that’s what I’m going to go with.
As for the fiction choice, surprise-surprise, probably The Hunger Games books. I feel like the impact/meaning would be lost if you wouldn’t be able to read the entire series, so I might say Mockingjay in particular, although it doesn’t stand up as well as The Hunger Games does as a stand-alone book. Mainly just because I do really enjoy the Hunger Games series. It’s such a cleverly crafted piece & holds so much societal critique with a unique love story that makes my writer’s brain go 😍AWOOGA🤤. It’s one of those masterpieces you can continue to pick apart forever & still find enjoyment & wow factor from. (At least for me it does)
As for any recommendations, I am a crime junkie at heart, so you best believe that’s what I’ll give you. There’s this series I started (& haven’t gotten to finish) by Lisa Jackson, called the Montana “To Die” series. I haven’t even finished the first book (Left To Die) but it’s absolutely THRILLING & a major page turner, so I highly recommend.

Wicked Game - Lisa Jackson
Tumblr media
Title: Wicked Game Author: Lisa Jackson & Nancy Bush Series: The Colony Series #1 Number of Pages: 402 Genre:  Suspense Thriller Publisher:  Zebra Date of Original Publication: January 26, 2021 ISBN: 978-1420151930
Started another series, without finishing a bunch of others, go figure. Lisa Jackson and Nancy Bush have a thriller series called the Colony Series.
Wicked Game is a slow burner. The story focuses on a woman who sees visions and she’s trying to solve the murder of her friend, while putting the pieces together of the visions. Her friend’s remains are found a decade later and their friend circle is reunited and all suspect each other.
I liked the setting and main characters within this moving storyline. Each was well rounded and the overall storyline was believable. The ending was interesting and I could see how they set it up for a sequel.
I didn’t like the pace of the book. The first half was very repetitive and overall the storyline moved slow. The first 2/3rds of the book to me were very slow moving and I had to push myself until the story actually got somewhere.
★★★ I liked it enough that I’ll read the second one but I wouldn’t put it in my top favorites.

REVIEW
The Last Sinner by Lisa Jackson
New Orleans #9
Twenty-two years after Lisa Jackson introduced us to Detecitve Rick Bentz and he began his dance with the Rosary Killer, we finally find out how that portion of the New Orleans series is put to rest. We also find out that Bentz is contemplating retirement and both he and his partner, Reuben Montoya, are married with small children. A lot has happened over the years in this series and it might require a bit of refreshing of my memory and a walk down memory lane BUT for now…here’s my take on book nine.
What I liked:
* The action-packed, intense, devastating introduction to the story
* Catching up with Bentz and Montoya and trying to remember what they did in the first eight books of the series
* Kristi Bentz McKnight: true crime author, suffered a great loss in this book, pregnant, dealing with grief, strong, resilient, daring to the point I would sometimes want to shout “no”, has a part in the next book in the series – unless it is a spinoff instead
* Jay McKnight: can’t remember much about him, had a small but epic part in this book, his “presence” in the story
* Meeting and being intrigued by Cruz Montoya
* Wondering if Bentz will retire and if so, who Montoya’s new partner will be
* The twists, turns, red herrings and review of Kristi’s past books
* That we finally found out the truth, or some of it, about the Rosary Killer and whether or not he is the person who attacks Kristi at the beginning of the book
* Wondering if this series will continue or if it is done now and a spinoff series will begin with Kristi and Cruz
What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about how warped, evil, and amorally soulless some people are
Did I enjoy this book? Mostly
Would I read more in this series? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the ARC – This is my honest review
4-5 Stars
BLURB
The #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Girl Who Survived delivers a gripping novel of suspense featuring two veteran homicide detectives matching wits with a twisted serial killer lurking in the shadows of New Orleans. There are killers so savage, so twisted, that they leave a mark not just on their victims, but on everyone who crosses their path. For Detectives Bentz and Montoya, Father John, a fake priest who used the sharpened beads of a rosary to strangle prostitutes, is one such monster. Bentz thought he’d ended that horror years ago when he killed Father John deep in the swamp. But now there are chilling signs he may have been wrong. A new victim has surfaced, her ruined body staged in deliberate, unmistakable detail. Either it’s a terrifying copycat, or Father John, the detective’s own recurring nightmare, has come back to haunt New Orleans. Another death, and another. Bentz is growing convinced that Father John isn’t just back. He’s circling closer, targeting those Bentz loves most. And this time, he won’t be stopped until the last sinner has paid the ultimate price… “Jackson definitely knows how to keep readers riveted.” —Mystery Scene

book: The Girl Who Survived by Lisa Jackson (kindle)
rating: 3/5 stars
genre: thriller; mystery
finished: 1-3-23
I started off thinking it would be much worse/boring than it actually was. I thought it was mostly a “junk food” book. That’s not to say I didn’t find it enjoyable, however! I did find myself getting attached to the characters, and I was genuinely invested in their well-beings. (Mr. Walmart-brand Smithback survived!)
The book focused on a trauma-ridden protagonist, whose effects of the trauma the author didn’t simply erase or excuse away by turning her into some super-hero. I found this to be a fresh concept from most other books I’ve read (not saying having a traumatic experience makes entertainment, just that it is different to see its effects taken seriously).
Kara was seven when she witnessed the scene of her family’s massacre, and she has been dealing with the aftereffects ever since. The murders were pinned on her older half-brother, and after new evidence, he has been released from prison. His recent release stirs up trouble, and it begs the question of who actually murdered Kara’s family.
I don’t know that I would recommend this book to someone else, but I definitely found it enjoyable and entertaining!

Circe’s Astro Observation #2

Note: I am not professional astrologer so please take these observations with a grain of salt. These are just my own observations, ideas, thoughts and theories. This is just for entertainment purposes.
**All photos are from Pinterest**
✿ Capricorn in the 3rd house can indicate the native being the more responsible sibling. They feel like the most mature sibling or they can actually be the older sibling.
✿ Men with Scorpio Venus tend to come from wealthy families.
✿ Chiron in the 10th house can actually indicate that the native will be very successful within their careers (after many setbacks) and they usually make a pretty big name for themselves.
✿ Pisces Moon women are so gorgeous 💗Ex: Wonyoung, IU, Audrey Hepburn, Winona Ryder, Vanessa Hudgens, Winter (Aespa)
✿ Also, Pisces women tend to get loads of hate for being too pretty. They are often accused of having plastic surgery...example Angelababy and Madison Beer. It could be Neptunes influence causing other people to project onto them so harshly.
✿ I can’t remember who said this already 😭 but Aquarius Suns really do have the prettiest noses. They won the nose genetics❤️ (J-hope, Rose, I.M, DK, my dad 💀) Either way their nose tend to be a prominent part of their face.
✿ Also why is it that idol groups always choose detrimental mars as their leaders? (Ex: TXT’s Soobin (libra mars), Seventeen’s S.Coups (libra mars), Enhypen’s Jungwon (taurus mars), Twice’s Jihyo (libra mars), BTS’s RM (cancer mars), Aespa’s Karina (taurus mars)).
✿ I also can't remember who said this before (if anyone knows the original creator who said this please let me know so I can give credit) but your Mars sign (degree + house) can indicate the reasons that you get "canceled" or the reason you receive hate..
If you have an Aquarius Mars or Mars at 11, 23 degrees you could get canceled for the most random things
if you have a Libra Mars or Mars 7, 19 degrees you could get canceled for being in a relationship.
Pisces Mars or Mars at 12, 24 degrees could be canceled dr*g use or being drunk/under the influence.
Sagittarius Mars or Mars at 9, 21 degrees could get cancelled due to cultural appropriation...
Examples:
Cai Xukun has his mars in cancer and he had a scandal concerning getting a woman pregnant and he (he also has a scorpio moon and his mother allegedly hired somoeone to stalk her...)
Lisa has her mars in virgo and when she was on Youth With You, she got a lot of hate for being "too strict" as a mentor.
Jackson Wang recieved a lot of hate due to him constantly drinking alcohol during his concerts. (pisces mars)
G-idle's Soyeon recieved lots of backlash for "hogging attention" and shes a Leo mars.
✿ Water sun men have the prettiest eyes…something about them is just so alluring (ex: WAYV’s Winwin, Ding Chengxin, Ding Yuxi, TXT’s Beomgyu, Stray Kid’s Hyunjin, Xu Kai, etc.)

If Hades raised Nico and Bianca Part 29
Bianca, coming home a mess: Hi.
Persephone: *gasps* What happened?!?!
Bianca: I got in a fight
Hades: Did you win?
Persephone: Hades! *to Bianca* what happened?!?!
Bianca: He said that I was a baby and that I was too small to be a hunter
Persephone: Who did you fight?!
Zagreus, coming in, clearly beaten up: T'sup?
Hades: *impressed*
Persephone: *gasp* You got in a fight with your brother?!
Bianca: I won a fight with my brother!
Zagreus: Liar!
Bianca: You want a rematch?!?!?!
Zagreus, hiding behind Persephone: Stop her, mom.
