hm well there's too many of those to just pick an arbitrary best, but I do really like leopard seal teeth!

okay so leopard seals are famous for making meals mostly of helpless penguins and sweet little seals of other species, but that's a bit of a misconception. they're actually a rare example of a multi-trophic animal that's specced into filter feeding on the side!

those aren't for meat. those are for krill.

leopard seals will filter-feed for these tiny shrimplike creatures similar to how whales do it- they take a big mouthful of shrimp-filled water, then force the water out through their back teeth, which act like sieves to prevent the shrimp from escaping!

pure headcanon from before I read the book Mass Effect: Annihilation: the elcor have baleen-like structures under their face flaps that they evolved to filter-feed airborne plankton or krill-like organisms out on the open plains and savannas of their homeworld

after reading Mass Effect: Annihilation: well, one of the characters in this book is an elcor dentist, so there goes the baleen idea. Then again, baleen is a toothlike sort of thing, so maybe someone trained to care for them would still be called a dentist…? But if elcor also have multi-chambered stomachs like ruminants, that throws a wrench in the whole idea too. Tiny airborne things wouldn’t need that much work to digest. Do they graze? Are those flaps flexible lips for grabbing plants? Are the plants a weird shape?

Also— if I pursued the filter-feeding idea, how does that work in something like an office canteen? Does Calyn sit down for lunch with some fellow diplomats and put a bag over his face?

Things That Happened in Sky Today:

Adopted two Moths. One was being bullied by the first Krill you encounter in Wasteland, and my stupid conscience told me I couldn't just leave them. (Wound up naming them Krillbait, but they will probably never know due to a possible language barrier. Shh. Don't tell them.) And the second one was on the path leading to Eden. (They did not get a nickname because they only stuck around long enough to get wings and then left.)

Had a random CONSTANTLY try to photobomb during the final season quest today. Like, there WERE other randoms, but we all were civil/polite enough to move out of the shot and take turns. This one wouldn't go away until I went idle for a few minutes. (Honking did nothing.)

Apparently ALL THE WEIRDOS WERE ON TODAY because one person and I lit each other up while waiting for people at the multi person elevator door, and they suddenly moved uncomfortably close to me and (I'm guessing) took a screenshot of my Sky Kid's feet. Like...WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU A FOOT FETISHIST WHAT THE FUCK GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM ME I FEEL VIOLATED HELP ASGSHAGDGDJABDVAJ-

As adults, kraken hunt a variety of animals, but seem to prefer hard-shelled creatures: Giant clams and abalone are favorites, which the kraken crushes open with its powerful claws, but it also pursues deep-water swimmers like oarfish, slower-moving squid, giant dragonfish and larger rays and carpet sharks. Kraken are also surprisingly docile regarding swimmers and divers as adults—it is the human-sized juveniles which respond most defensively to human-sized creatures approaching them—and most kraken ignore creatures of a human-like size and shape unless attacked by one. “Dean?”

“Huh?” Dean shakes away his impending dizziness. 

Cas is looking at him, a question in his frown, holding the phone away from his mouth. 

“Jody wants to know if we can drive up. She has something to show us.” 

Dean has to hide. 

He can’t hide. 

He’s done this stupid thing with Cas and now he’s stuck, unless he wants to break Cas for good. Because Cas will never give up on Dean, he’ll never save himself.

So Dean smiles as his insides wither. “Sure.”
