Basil & Oregano - Book Review
Tumblr media
⭐: 4 Where was this when I was 13? Basil and Oregano is a super cute and wholesome graphic novel by Melissa Capriglione. It's set in a magical world where our main characters attend a boarding school to learn magiculinary arts. It is absolutely fantastic. I loved the art-style, the characters, the magical world Melissa created and the plot. I also loved her casual diversity. The characters were of all races, religions, genders, body abilities, etc but it never felt forced nor was it ever made the focal point of any of the characters. They just existed as they were and I loved that. There were some aspects of the plot that I felt had too simple a resolution but this is a book targeted to lower younger adults which i believe is like 11-14/15 so I give her a pass. I felt like she captured a lot of difficult topics that preteens & teens experience, especially revolving around growing up poorer than those around you, making your family proud and the burden of being the "acheiver" or "money maker" in the family. I really feel that a lot of young teens would relate a lot to this book and that it's a nice easy wholesome read for adults.

Bre Indigo's second recently released graphic novel, Northranger with Rey Tercier, is a teen summer gothic romance.
Tumblr media
Available from HarperCollins
Cade has always loved to escape into the world of a good horror movie. After all, horror movies are scary—but to Cade, a closeted queer Latino teen growing up in rural Texas—real life can be way scarier. When Cade is sent to spend the summer working as a ranch hand to help earn extra money for his family, he is horrified. Cade hates everything about the ranch, from the early mornings to the mountains of horse poop he has to clean up. The only silver lining is the company of the two teens who live there—in particular, the ruggedly handsome and enigmatic Henry. But as unexpected sparks begin to fly between Cade and Henry, things get…complicated. Henry is reluctant to share the details of his mother’s death, and Cade begins to wonder what else he might be hiding. Inspired by the gothic romance of Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey and perfect for fans of Heartstopper and Bloom comes a modern love story so romantic it’s scary.
Both are great reads for Pride Month!

‘The Dog Knight’
Tumblr media
Frankie Jude Bryant is a nonbinary middle school student who is dealing with identity, the usual academic challenges and, oh yes, trying to become the Dog Knight, a champion for humans and canines. Despite the presence of magical talking pooches, this journey of heroism and self-discovery feels grounded thanks to captions that get into the head of Frankie, who prefers they/them pronouns. On the first page, they think, “Do you ever feel like you don’t make sense?” Later, Frankie muses about their frenemy Dallas, who misgenders them: “She gets it wrong on purpose just to make a big deal about correcting it.” And when Frankie finds their tribe, “For the first time in a long time, I look in the mirror and I don’t feel a pain in the pit of my stomach.” Written by Jeremy Whitley, drawn by Bre Indigo and colored by Melissa Capriglione.
‘Marry Me a Little: A Graphic Memoir’
Tumblr media
The cartoonist Rob Kirby chronicles his 2013 march down the aisle in Minnesota with his longtime partner, John Capecci. The story highlights where gay marriage stood at the time (each state was making its own rules before same-sex unions became the law of the land in 2015) and looks back at Jack Baker and Michael McConnell, who somehow were able to obtain a marriage license in Minneapolis in 1971. The personal recollections are powerful and honest: Rob remembers when he first casually used the word “husband,” which felt like “a small but genuine political act.” He also acknowledges the white, middle-class privilege that allowed him ambivalence about getting married. His ultimate conclusion: “Marriage does not define a relationship. Unless you want it to.”
‘Gatsby’
Tumblr media
The messages of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” — about social status, love and chasing dreams — are revisited in the present with a racially and sexually diverse set of characters in their 20s. Gatsby is a Black tech millionaire looking for a love who got away, and Lu Zhao, the stand-in for Nick Carraway, is visiting from Singapore and summering on Long Island (where a $5,000-plus afternoon shopping spree highlights the casual wealth). The main characters are refreshingly blasé about their sexuality: Lu’s girlfriend, Alexis, asks, “How do you identify?” But Lu’s answer does not really matter as Alexis says, “I love being on this journey with you. I’m here for you no matter what.” Written by Jeremy Holt, drawn by Felipe Cunha and colored by Dearbhla Kelly.
‘Hex Americana’
Tumblr media
The cartoonist Bree Wolf spins a tale about auto racing, teen romance, monsters and ghosts. Flesh-and-blood Ken forms an unlikely alliance with Dante, who died in a previous race and haunts his car as a ghost. A successful partnership will allow Ken to compete in the annual Grand Prix and help Dante move on to the afterlife. The more than 300-page story packs in a lot of character growth, action, flashbacks and drama. The relationship between Ken and Karen, his mother, is particularly nuanced. Karen is supportive of her son, who is gay, but she struggles with how to correct her overbearing friend James when he makes thoughtless jokes about Ken. (Iron Circus Comics. Aug. 30.)
‘Death Drop: Drag Assassin’
Tumblr media
The Gayborhood, as it is called in this five-part series, has seen better days. Thugs feel empowered to assault young gay men, and a drag queen named Lunaira has gone missing from the club Posterior Delusions. Residents have little faith in the local police. Enter Death Drop, a former hit man and current drag queen, who is pushed by Mother Henny, the hostess of the club, to find Lunaira. “She’s a queen of color who has been missing for more than two days,” Mother Henny says. “You do the math.” It helps that Death Drop and Mother Henny used to date. Let the investigation begin. Written by David Hazan and drawn and colored by Alex Moore. (Scout Comics. June 14.)
‘Turtle Bread’
Tumblr media
Kim-Joy, a British baker and cookbook writer, teams up with the artist Alti Firmansyah for this story about Yan, who is struggling with low self-esteem and social anxiety. When Yan finds a local baking club, she is plagued by doubts about whether she will fit in or be liked, but she soon learns that everyone struggles in different ways. Yan eventually becomes confident enough to rally the club members to seek out and support one of their fellow bakers who needs it. Yan would qualify as an ally, but there are characters with significant roles in the story who are gay and lesbian. And there are recipes, including one that gives this story its title. (Comixology Originals. Available now.)

2022 was a trying year if I'm being honest. There were ups and downs, and we had many stressful events throughout it within my family. But while all of that happened, I wanted to try some movies I hadn't watch by then. Some were released around that time, others were movies that were already there. It was surprising to discover hidden treasures in the cinema industry, and I felt very fond to them. These movies helped me to keep going and to have my spirit and mood lifted. So, I wanted to draw them a Fanart as a tribute, freely inspired on the Six Fanart Challenge template by Melissa Capriglione.
Featuring here:
- "Ryuu to Sobakasu no Hime or Belle", drawing finished at January 6 of 2023.
- "The Bad Guys" Finished at February 2 of 2023.
- "The Sea Beast" Finished at February 4 of 2023.
- "The Last Unicorn" Finished at February 9 of 2023.
- "Neko no Ongaeshi or The Cat Returns" Finished at February 15 of 2023.
- "Mune, Le Gardien de la Lune" Finished at February 17 of 2023.
All made with pencil colors and pens. Click on each drawing to see it closely and with more quality.

The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley
Rating: 3.5/5 stars
a slow mystery surrounding a building filled with rich people and a woman looking for her missing brother
Basil and Oregano by Melissa Capriglione
Rating: 4/5 stars
a graphic novel set in a magic culinary school and following a cute sapphic couple
Unknown Caller by Lisa Unger
Rating: 3/5 stars
a novella about a crisis helpline worker who keeps getting weird calls
Currently reading:
The Island of Monsters by Ellen Oh
60% into this middle grade spooky novel about ghost hunters (it's the second book in the series)
This was more low-key because I've reached my mid year slump era where i just read to read and not for fun. I'm gonna take a little break before I pick my next book
Next readathon comes in October 🦋

Tumblr media
Blood Of The Virgin HC -  Sammy Harkham
Set in and around 1971 in Los Angeles, Blood of the Virgin follows an immigrant film editor named Seymour who is desperate to make his own movies. Without money or clout, he has no choice but to spend his days slumming it for the worst and most exploitative production company in town. When Seymour is given the chance to make a film of his own, his unbending principles and relentless drive violently clash with an industry that rewards everything but these traits. As Seymour's blind ambition pushes the movie along, his home life grows increasingly fraught. Using the film's production as a means to spiral out into time and space, Harkham creates an epic novel that explores the intersection of parenthood, 20th-century America, sex, the immigrant experience, and the era of grindhouse movies. Like a kaleidoscope, Blood of the Virgin shifts and evolves with each frame, allowing the reader to zoom out and see that at its core, this book is about the making of a man.

Tumblr media
Desegregating Comics: Debating Blackness In The Golden Age Of American Comics -  Qiana Whitted
Some comics fans view the industry's Golden Age (1930s-1950s) as a challenging time when it comes to representations of race, an era when the few black characters appeared as brutal savages, devious witch doctors, or unintelligible minstrels. Desegregating Comics assembles a team of leading scholars to explore how debates about the representation of blackness shaped both the production and reception of Golden Age comics. Some essays showcase rare titles like Negro Romance and consider the formal innovations introduced by black comics creators like Matt Baker and Alvin Hollingsworth, while others examine the treatment of race in the work of such canonical cartoonists as George Herriman and Will Eisner. Golden Age comics artists, writers, editors, distributors, and readers engaged in heated negotiations over how blackness should be portrayed, and the outcomes of those debates continue to shape popular culture today.
Tumblr media
Every Day GN -  David Levithan & Dion MBD
Every day a different body. Every day a different life. Every day in love with the same girl. There's never any warning about where it will be or who it will be. A has made peace with that-even established guidelines by which to live: Never get too attached. Avoid being noticed. Do not interfere. It's all fine until the morning that A wakes up in the body of Justin and meets Justin's girlfriend, Rhiannon. From that moment, the rules by which A has been living no longer apply. Because finally A has found someone they want to be with-day in, day out, day after day. But can Rhiannon love someone who is destined to change every day? For the first time on the page, A's epic story will be brought to life as a graphic novel with illustrations by Dion MBD.
Tumblr media
Fairest Of All GN -  Serena Valentino & Fiona Marchbank
Disney's New York Times-bestselling Villains series comes to life in this graphic novel adaptation of the book that started it all! The tale of the young princess, Snow White, and her evil stepmother, the Wicked Queen, is widely known-the Queen was jealous of the girl's beauty, and this jealousy culminated in the Queen's attempt on the sweet, naive girl's life. But what caused the Queen to become so, well, wicked? Perhaps the Queen hated her stepdaughter for her resemblance to the King's first wife. Perhaps she resented the girl for her beauty. Could the Queen simply have been born that cruel? Or does it have to do with a mysterious mirror, gifted to her upon her wedding and swirling with dark magic? And who is the man in the mirror? Is he the reason for the Queen's downfall?
Tumblr media
George’s Run: A Writer’s Journey Through The Twilight Zone GN -  Henry Chamberlain
George Clayton Johnson was an up-and-coming short story writer who broke into Hollywood in a big way when he co-wrote the screenplay for Ocean's Eleven. More legendary works followed, including Logan's Run and classic scripts for shows like The Twilight Zone and Star Trek. Late in life, Johnson befriended comics journalist and artist Henry Chamberlain, and the two had long chats about his amazing life and career. Now Chamberlain pays tribute to his late friend in the graphic novel George's Run, which brings Johnson's creative milieu to life in vividly illustrated color panels. The result feels less like reading a conventional biography and more like sitting in on an intimate conversation between friends as they recollect key moments in pop culture history.
Tumblr media
Haunthology GN -  Jeremy Haun
From creatures of the night to even more terrifying creatures of the day, HAUNTHOLOGY is an anxiety-inducing collection of 28 short stories and vignettes from the mind of JEREMY HAUN, the writer and artist behind THE BEAUTY, THE REALM, The Red Mother, The Approach and other nightmarish mindscapes. Whether exploring a claustrophobic old house full of nefarious entities or the heavy thoughts one has during the pending end of the world, this very personal project was written and drawn entirely during the COVID lockdowns.
Tumblr media
Impossible People: A Completely Average Recovery Story GN -  Julia Wertz
In her keenly observed graphic memoir, celebrated cartoonist Julia Wertz chronicles her haphazard attempts at sobriety and the relentlessly challenging, surprisingly funny, and occasionally absurd cycle of addiction and recovery. Opening at the culmination of a disastrous trip to Puerto Rico, Julia stands stupefied in the middle of the jungle beside a rental Jeep she's just crashed. From this moment, the story flashes back to the beginning of her five-year journey towards sobriety that includes group therapy sessions, relapses, an ill-fated relationship, terrible dates, and an unceremonious eviction from her New York City apartment. Impossible People portrays the lesser told but more common story of addiction: That the road to recovers is not always linear.
Tumblr media
Lo & Behold GN -  Wendy Mass & Gabi Mendez
When you're named after a 250-year-old tortoise, you grow up believing life is full of possibilities and wonder. But ever since Addie's family got turned upside down, those things have been harder for her to see. The Twilight Man: Rod Sterling & The Birth Of Television HC -  Koren Shadmi
We recognize him as our sharply dressed and charming guide to The Twilight Zone, but the entertainment business Rod Sterling got his start in saw him as something very different. This "angry young man" pushed the boundaries of television through the lens of science fiction stories that explored the nature of humanity while rejecting notions of war, censorship, and racism. But the monsters he crafted for the screen were far from the only ones that inhabited Sterling's life, from PTSD to the struggles of working in the entertainment industry.

Six Fanarts Challenge (2020)
My contribution to Melissa Capriglione’s #SixFanarts challenge. Having asked my followers to suggest characters they’d like to see, I drew Jurassic Park’s Ian Malcolm, Raven from Teen Titans (2003), Dipper Pines of Gravity Falls, Spider-Man of the Toei series in the 70s, Murder, She Wrote’s Jessica Fletcher and Rosa Diaz of Brooklyn 99. I had a lot of fun doing this challenge and would gladly do it again.

March Wrap Up Part 3! If you saw this earlier, no you didn’t.
Tumblr media
Magilumiere Magical Girls Inc
Dates Read: 20 March
Review: 4 Stars
Thoughts: If you’ve followed me for a minute you’ll know I LOVE magical girls. I’m so excited to see such an original take get an English license. This opening volume was so fun to read. I absolutely can’t wait for the rest of this journey.
Tumblr media
Basil and Oregano by Melissa Capriglione
Dates Read: 20 March
Review: 3 stars
Thoughts: another cute and fun sapphic graphic novel (i read so many sapphic stories this month lmfao) I’d say this was on the lower end of YA and it’s fun for the whole family.
Tumblr media
Justice League of America (1960) 4
Dates Read: 20 March
Review: 3 stars
Thoughts: Reading older comics is always a trip because the medium itself has changed so much over the decades. Anyway this was a fun issue. I need to read more class GA stories.
Tumblr media
The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See
Dates Read: 9 March- 21 March
Review: 4 stars
Thoughts: This was the happiest and most optimistic Lisa See novel I’ve read so far and also probably my least favorite (lmao) the opening chapters were DEVESTATING but it quickly moved on and away from that. Still great just…. Not what I was hoping for I guess haha.
Tumblr media
Keeper of Enchanted Rooms by Charlie N Holmerberg
Dates Read: 8 March-23 March
Review: 3 stars
Thoughts: Started reading this for the narrator (who also did Mysterious Letter) only to find out he was 1 of 3 and easily the narrator with the least chapters. Tragic. This is the first of a trilogy but I feel no need to continue on. It was a fun little fantasy.
Tumblr media
Zachary Ying and the Dragon Emperor by Xiran Jay Zhao
Dates Read: 21 March-23 March
Review: 3 stars
Thoughts: Middle Grade tends not to be my genre-I very rarely read it so take this rating with that in mind. That’s said I thought it was really fun! Learning about Chinese history, culture and mythology was a great deal of fun. I can’t wait for whatever Xiran Jay Zhao puts out next. (I mean I know Heavnly Tyrant is next but like I’m general)
Tumblr media
Clap When you Land by Elizabeth Acevedo
Dates Read: 23 March-24 March
Review: 3 stars
Thoughts: I liked this more than The Poet X but lyrical novels just tend not to do it for me. That’s said I understand why this is considered a modern classic. It didn’t go the way I expected it to based on the premise I had been given but that wasn’t necessarily a detriment to it.
Tumblr media
Superman Last Son of Krypton (action comics 844-846, 851, 866-870, Annual 11)

Thoughts: This contained two arcs- Last Son of Kyrpton and a…. A Brainiac arc I don’t remember the name of. It’s definitely the set up for New Krytpon. They get Kandor back from Brainiac. I loved reading Chris’s introduction. It’s very interesting how quick this storyline is-the author couldn’t write it all in one go so he ended up writing a story in Superman as well, but like…. The timeline is a mess because of it lmao.

Thoughts: What an intriguing start! Like many people I jumped onto this because I loved Woman of Tomorrow so much, so I’m more than willing to see this through.

How To Get a Girlfriend When You’re A Terrifying Monster
Dates Read: 23 March-25 March
Review: 3 stars
Thoughts: This book was fun but definitely didn’t feel complete. It’s only 115 pages and definitely just felt like the first portion of a regular sized motel. I mean… nothing gets resolved but new problems are introduced consistently. Not to say I didn’t enjoy it! I did and plan on reading the sequel but it just seems like it should have probably all been lnf regularly sized novel. Anyway I was 100% expecting them to have kinky tentacle sex but they didn’t even kiss by the end. SAD!
