Basil & Oregano - Book Review
⭐: 4
Where was this when I was 13?
Basil and Oregano is a super cute and wholesome graphic novel by Melissa Capriglione. It's set in a magical world where our main characters attend a boarding school to learn magiculinary arts. It is absolutely fantastic. I loved the art-style, the characters, the magical world Melissa created and the plot. I also loved her casual diversity. The characters were of all races, religions, genders, body abilities, etc but it never felt forced nor was it ever made the focal point of any of the characters. They just existed as they were and I loved that.
There were some aspects of the plot that I felt had too simple a resolution but this is a book targeted to lower younger adults which i believe is like 11-14/15 so I give her a pass. I felt like she captured a lot of difficult topics that preteens & teens experience, especially revolving around growing up poorer than those around you, making your family proud and the burden of being the "acheiver" or "money maker" in the family. I really feel that a lot of young teens would relate a lot to this book and that it's a nice easy wholesome read for adults.

3.5 Stars
This book is pretty much what I expected it to be. There are quite a few plot holes, characters are a little flat, I wasn’t an huge fan of the art style, I thought the pacing was a bit fast, and the resolution wraps things up neater than I typically prefer. Also, it was younger YA than I usually prefer, and while YA is obviously a spectrum it still impacted my enjoyment.
That being said, I love stories that do interesting things with food magic, the casual diversity throughout this book was incredible, the main romance was adorable, and I did think the ideas it deals with (especially burnout and the pressure of parental expectations) are important to talk about in works for younger audiences.
Overall, while this wasn’t for me, it may be a great book for other people, especially younger teens. I’d recommend it if you’re looking for a cute and light read. I wouldn’t recommend this if you’re looking for a particularly fleshed-out world, airtight plot, or complex antagonists.

I've been cooking a lot lately and I have really discovered the joys of vegan recipe sites. I'm a vegetarian, but I don't like the taste of eggs or milk or most types of cheese and I'm lactose intolerant, so while I'm not giving up the occasional pizza when it comes to cooking myself I tend to find things on vegan sites waaaaay more appealing than vegetarian or omnivorous sites. I made the most amazing dish tonight and it called for cashew cream and it was my first time making that and it was sooo good. It made the dish really rich and creamy without the gross milky flavor in actual cream based dishes and without upsetting my stomach. I feel like I have solved the secrets of the universe lol.
