Sleepover
Peeta Mellark x Reader
Hunger Games Masterlist
Summary: waiting for the revolution to take place in district 13, you and Peeta decide to have your first sleepover before everything goes down.
Warnings: weight insecurity/body image
You never knew when it was dark out, relying on the timing of district 13 to tell you when it was lights out. It had been a weird switch. Staying underground constantly made you feel a little claustrophobic in a sense, like you weren't able to ever go above ground.
You hated how an easily erased schedule made your whole day, you wished you'd have more free time throughout. Although you really didn't care about the classes, you'd still gone to them and took notes, knowing how over dramatic they are about their schedules. It's like if you're off by one minute, you've automatically messed up their whole system.
You walked back to your little housing situation, sharing one with Peeta, your best friend. And now because of the games your relationship has progressed into a romantic one, needing to quickly as you wouldn't have been able to make it out of the games alive if not.
The capitol had rushed it, making everything go by so fast. You two couldn't enjoy simple moments together, Peeta proposing immediately after the tours you had been through. Just for the pleasure of the capitol and Snow. You both absolutely couldn't stand Snow, so being in district 13 helped a lot.
"I'm so tired"
You yawned loudly as you collapsed onto his bed, it being the closest to you from where you were.
"hey! I just made that"
"too bad"
Your body relaxed on his bed, taking in the scent of him that calmed you. No matter what it was, if it was of him it always comforted you.
"hey- what are you doing!?"
You felt his hands on your waist, and all of a sudden he had lifted you over his shoulder. You were pretty heavy, wondering if it hurt him a bit. His blanket hit him in the face as you hung onto it well being lifted to try and keep yourself close to the bed, obviously not working.
"how are you even this strong? I'm pretty heavy-"
"your perfectly fine if I can carry you sweetheart"
Your heart pounded when he called you names like that. Sweetheart. Your face was now a bright red, the anxiety and nickname working together to create it.
He carried you over to your bed on the opposite side of the room, carefully dropping you as he didn't want to hurt you. You quickly covered your violently red face with his blanket, feeling like he could feel the heat radiating off of it from where he stood above you.
He yanked it from your arms, wanting to uncover your face and retrieve his blanket for his freshly made bed.
"hey come on give me my blanket back!-"
He finally managed to get it from your tight grip, slowly processing your face before you turned your head into the pillow. He always loved to absorb your emotions, enjoying how you reacted. And this one was new to his eyes.
"are you-"
"shut up!"
He laughed, filling up the room as it echoed. You loved his laugh, it always made you smile. But right now, it was only making your face even redder. He sat on the bed beside you, the mattress deepening from the weight. You somewhat rolled toward him from the weight difference, tapping his back with yours making contact.
"come onnn, roll over y/n"
"You're just gonna make fun of me"
Your voice was muffled by the pillow you were on, not trusting yourself to be able to look at him without a red blush.
"I won't I promise. Please"
He thought of what else could convince you in the moment, trying to grab your waist and turn you to face him.
"please.. sweetheart?"
Your face grew even redder, not knowing it was possible to feel your heartbeat and warmth this much.
"please-"
Your voice trembling at this point,
"I can't handle it, you're gonna make me even worse"
"even worse?"
You finally turned to him, giving in. His eyes were staring deeply at your face, then your hair, then your eyes and lips. he went over them all carefully, memorizing the blush and the emotion in your eyes. The way they looked at him with embarrassment, but also lovingly.
"you see how red I am? I'm basically a heater."
He laughed again, gaining another laugh from you not being able to contain it after his. You admired the way his mouth lifted into the laugh, his eyes too, same with his hair. Everything about him, you realized, was amazing.
"How about we have a sleepover hm?"
"You're always laying with me. Just stay here a little longer and call it a sleepover"
You both laughed, basking in each others company.
"have I.. ever kissed you in private y/n?"
Your eyes widened in a bit of shock. It was quite a random question, but your face still reacted fast.
"without a camera in our faces?"
"no- no.. I don't think so...why?"
He placed his hand gently on your cheek, slowly leaning down to your level on the pillow.
"may I sweetheart?"
"how could I say no to the Peeta Mellark?"

Hi!! What's your favorite line in the hunger games books if you have one??
Hi, so I can't decide. Soooo here's my top 5 <3
“Well don’t expect us to be too impressed. We just saw Finnick Odair in his underwear.” -Boggs (I'm pretty sure, I haven't read the books in forever)
“I can feel Peeta press his forehead into my temple and he asks, 'So now that you've got me, what are you going to do with me?' I turn into him. 'Put you somewhere you can't get hurt.” - Katniss
"If it weren't for the baby", "You here to finish me off, Sweetheart?" and "My nightmares are usually about losing you. I'm okay once I realize you're here." are on the same ranking because peeta's just that good
“I always channel my emotions into my work. That way, I don't hurt anyone but myself.” - Cinna
“Ally." Peeta says the words slowly, tasting it. "Friend. Lover. Victor. Enemy. Fiancee. Target. Mutt. Neighbor. Hunter. Tribute. Ally. I'll add it to the list of words I use to try to figure you out. The problem is, I can't tell what's real anymore, and what's made up.” -Peeta

Moments Like These
a gadge modern day AU
Finally wrestling her two toddlers to bed- that is if bed were her very own body on her bed instead of their own- Madge relaxed her tired achy body into the soft mattress. The rational side of her yelled obscenities about proper bed time routines and sleep training for when the new baby arrived in less than 2 months but the very pregnant, very sore, very tired part of her won out. And if she was being honest, she welcomed that side winning. The mom guilt hit her hard in moments like these- a three and two-year-old, and now a newborn soon to make her arrival. She wasn’t sure she did all her children enough justice with alone one-on-one time but one positive pregnancy test after another, her OBGYN came to the conclusion that cycle tracking instead of birth control was to blame and the added very healthy sex life of herself and her husband didn’t exactly help matters.
She looked down at her sons, Ash and Rowan, cuddled against her in each arm, legs thrown across her body, arms cradling her growing bump- both almost carbon copies of their Papa. Olive skin and dark onyx hair with long limbs they were often mistaken as twins and Gale’s clones- the only things remotely resembling their Mamma being Ash’s soft waves in his dark hair and his little button nose, and Rowan’s blue eyes. She hoped her little girl on the way looked more like her but Hawthorne DNA were just about as strong as they were and she wasn’t sure her Undersee blood was winning anytime soon.
The quiet rumble of an engine coming up their driveway and dying down broke her out her thoughts. The jingle of keys and the click of the door shutting meant her husband was finally home. 8pms became the new normal these last few months with a major client’s project deadline being moved forward for her engineer husband.
“I knew you’d all be in here,” he said entering their room, removing his watch and kissing her hello all in one fluid motion.
“They wouldn’t settle in their own beds and wanted to cuddle with Mamma and baby sister,” she explained, watching him remove his blazer jacket and undo his shirt’s sleeve cuff buttons. “I couldn’t say no.”
He flashed her a grin that made butterflies dance in the bottom of her stomach- after all these years she still had the fattest crush. “I don’t blame you, they’ve got that Hawthorne charm- very hard to say no. Besides, they’re doing their Papa a great favour- there’s no better view to come home to.”
“I’m not so sure,” she replied as he leaned cross-armed against the en-suite doorway, grey eyes full of mischief. “I’m afraid there’s no space for you on the bed- all spaces and Mamma’s arms are occupied.”
“It requires a litle simple engineering,” he replied making his way over to her. “Just need to adjust this little arm here, move this foot over there.” He commented all while gently untangling his sons from their Mamma. “And now Mamma is all free and Papa can have her all to himself.”
Holding on both her hands, Gale tugged her off the bed and onto her feet in front of him before wrapping an arm around her waist and capturing her lips in a deep kiss. She sighed, snaking her arms around his neck.
Massaging her tongue with his, he let his other hand travel: up her jaw and into her hair unclipping her the claw that held it up and followed her long golden waves that fell in cascades down, settling on her exposed lower back. It was already the beginning of September but the relentless Texas sun and a very pregnant Madge warranted the cool summer dresses.
Gently nipping at her now plump bottom lip and brushing his nose against hers, he whispered, “Come join me for a bath. I promise relaxing music and a nice massage- no funny business.”
Grinning against his lips and then taking them slow and hard between hers, she replied, “Oh no, I’m here for the funny business too.”
With a groan punctuated with one his dimpled smiles, Gale gently scooped up his pregnant wife into his arms, carrying her into their connected bathroom, all while a funny surprised sound escaped her lips while she exclaimed, “Gale! I’m huge, you’re going to throw your back out!”
With long strides, he reached their claw foot tub and set her down. Cradling her face and planting a gentle kiss on her forehead, he answered with a simple, “Never.”
Shaking her head, Madge dimmed the bathroom lights whilst her husband drew the bath. He exchanged his phone for her organic blend of relaxation essential oils from Mrs Evedeen. With soft notes of a romantic piano instrumental filling the air, Madge made her way to Gale who was half perched on the edge of the tub.
She settled herself between his long legs and wound her arms around his neck. Reaching under her hair, he tugged free the string tied into a little bow that held the short dress together at the back. Slipping the cuffed lantern sleeves down her arms, the white dress billowed to the floor. She was left bare in front of him the only modesty being her small, pre-pregnancy white lace panties that stopped below her bump. Maternity underwear albeit supporting and snug, was way too hot and, besides, the lace underwear was cute and it matched the dress (underwear coordination was Madge’s fatal flaw).
Deciding she didn’t want to be alone in the nude, Madge undid the buttons on her husband’s dress shirt while he openly ogled her. She shook her head, her cheeks turning pink. She couldn’t understand what there was to appreciate- her ankles were more like cankles, her stomach was much bigger than it had been at this point in her last pregnancy and fine pink lines snaked up her hips onto her belly. She supposed the only positive were her ever growing breasts which had gone up 2 sizes.
Standing up, he shrugged his shirt off and placed another kiss atop her head, “You are incredibly beautiful.” She responded with a soft kiss to his pec which he only went on to return with a kiss to her bare shoulder, then crouching down, he hooked both his fingers on either side of her panties and brought it down her legs, punctuating that with another kiss to the base of the growing pink vines on her hip. The feel of his soft lips and the brush of the cold metal on her skin from his wedding band sent shivers up her spine, leaving goosebumps in their wake.
With a soft smack to her behind, he instructed her to get in the tub, lending a hand while she stepped in. The water sloshed as she sat down, nearly tipping over the sides. She waited for her husband to join behind her, settling snug right against him before allowing herself to feel the warm water and oils relax her tense muscles. Running her hands down her husband’s large thighs on either side of her, she sighed contentedly, relishing the feeling of just the two of them alone together.
It was a rare moment these last three years for Madge and Gale to be just “Madge and Gale”- not “Mamma and Papa” or “Gale the Mechanical Engineer” and “Madge the Teacher turned Stay-At-Home-Mom”. Sometimes it felt like all these new titles were sinking “Husband and Wife” but somehow they always found a way to revive it- no wonder they basically had “3 under 3”.
“I’m sorry,” he softly said against the side of her head. Madge let out a confused “Hmm?”
“That you’re doing all of this,” he gestured nonspecifically, “basically on your own. I- it wasn’t supposed to be like this. Me leaving at 8 and coming home at 8- just barely enough time to say bye to you and the boys in the morning and then coming home late enough that they’re already asleep.”
He sighed, linking their hands together. “And now we’re 2 months away from another one and you’ve Superwomaned your way through this pregnancy and dealing with two Hawthorne toddlers,” he shook his head, a wry smile on his face. “I wanted this so bad- the white picket fence with the wife, the kids and the dog but I didn’t want the cliché.”
She squeezed their linked hands. She understood it all, it wasn’t easy for either of them but she made the decision to stay at home after Ash. She wanted that home for her kids- the one full of love and light, where Mamma was always there for them to kiss their ‘owies’ better, be apart of all their little milestones, build a beautiful world together where they read all the stories, baked the yummy goodies and ended the day feeling the fullness of life.
She didn’t want them having even half of that- seeing Mamma and Papa just at the end of the day and having an empty lonely home. They were lucky that Gale’s job paid well and with his promotion to lead engineer, they were more than comfortable so she didn’t need to work. If he ever thought she resented him for it, it was quite literally the opposite.
She turned and kissed his jaw, the corner of his mouth and then his lips. “I love you. I love our little family. I love our home. I love this life we’ve built. Nothing is ever going to be perfect but we’re a team and we’ll figure it out together.”
He sighed and responded with just a kiss and an, “I love you.” wrapping his arms around her, rubbing soft circles on her belly.
They stayed in the tub savouring the closeness of each other, Gale keeping to his promise of a massage, kneading at her achy muscles but not to his promise of no funny business. The pleasure coursed from her core all the way to the tips of her toes, leaving her satiated and sleepy. The tips of her fingers were prunes and the water a gross tepid temperature when they finally got out. He wrapped her in a soft towel and massaged stretch mark oil across her belly, peppering kisses and whispering sweet nothings to their growing baby girl.
Clad in their pyjamas, they made their way to their babies, gently peeling back the duvet and snuggling in tight- all five of them. Stirring with the little commotion Ash, drowsy with sleep, welcomed the presence of Gale with a, “Papa!”, throwing his arms around him, burying his little head in the crook of his Papa’s neck.
Parenting was hard- life was hard- but Madge would take the worst days everyday if it meant having moments like these.

Word Count- 2,299
Warings- violence
The cold floor of the cell sends goosebumps crawling up my arms. My hairs stand on edge, and every couple seconds my whole body twitches. The tracker jacker venom runs thick through my veins from the last "session." That's what they call them: President Snow and his team of doctors and nurses. Their only objective is to keep me alive long enough to torture me, to damage my brain and fill my head with artificial memories meant to brake me. Day in and day out, they show me pictures of Katniss, her voice rings through my head as they beat me. I have violent hallucinations of her doing unspeakable things to me. I feel every second of it. Why can't they kill me? Send my conscious mind into a desolate never-ending state of nothingness, because that's too easy. Nothing in the capital is easy. That's why twenty-four kids are sent to the Hunger Games every year. Because somewhere in Snow's sick distorted perception of reality, watching kids slaughter each other and celebrating the victors whos lives will be forever plagued with nightmares and flashbacks, is the only way to keep the districts in line. The only way to hold off the rebellion. Well, not anymore.
Katniss is the rebellion, the Mockingjay, and President Coin has got her. She's the reason I'm tortured in a cell in the capital. Katniss is the rebellions weapon, and I'm the capitals weapon. The only difference is never-ending suffering experienced by those saved by the capital. They are turning me into a Mutt, wearing me down little by little till I snap. Until my mind reaches depths of madness incomprehensible by a sain human. This issue is, it's working. Every day I feel my self becoming angrier and angrier. With every injection, every beating, every drop of my blood spilt, my anger grows. I can feel it festering in the back of my mind.
I try to sit up, but my arms feel week and numb. My vision begins to look fuzzy, and my eyelids feel heavy. The black polished shoes of President Snow standing in front of me is the last thing I can remember before I finally let my eye's close. In seconds I'm overtaken by sleep.
I inhale sharply as my eye's shoot open. Where am I? How long was I out? My breathing quickens as I try to move. My arms and legs are strapped into a chair. My heart begins to rase in my chest as I thrash violently, trying to escape.
"Don't struggle," I shoot my head up. President Snow is standing in front of me, two doctors wearing all white at his side. "You will only make it worse."
I grit my teeth. I've been here before. I know what's going to happen. I'm so tired, so fucking tired.
"Please." I plea, hot tears well up in my eyes. "Please, not again. I can't take this anymore." My voice cracks as I look up at President Snow. His cold face is unnerving. His dead stare sends a shiver down my spine. He nods, signaling to the doctors that its time. The doctors in their clean white coats approach me. I close my eye's, hoping that maybe if I think hard enough, this might all have just been a bad dream. I could wake up in a cold sweat, next to Katniss in our house in the victor's village. We could spend the morning talking about my nightmare like we always do when one of us has a distressing dream.
The prick of the IV being inserted into my arms knocks me back to reality. Reminds me that I'm not in my bed, I'm strapped to a chair in the capital, and I'm definitely not dreaming. I hold my breath as a cold liquid fills my veins. Suddenly my head feels like it's a thousand pounds. I let gravity do the work as my head goes limp against my chest. All at once, my ears begin to ring, louder, and louder, and louder. I squeeze my eyes shut. I think my eardrums might burst. I bring my knees to my chest and my hands to my ears, my throat letting out a blood-curdling scream. As abruptly as it began, it was over. Replaced with a silence that's equally as uncomfortable. I open my eyes, my arms and legs are free, I'm not in the capital anymore, I'm in the cave, from the first games. I prop my self up on my elbows; I look down, my wound is as bad as ever. Blood and pus seep out of the jagged cut — my whole body aches. Sweat drips down my face, and I have to bite my lip to stop from screaming.
"K-Katness," I pant, the pain is worse than the first time I experienced it. "Katn-ness, p-p-please!" I call out, where is she? Why isn't she here with me? Abruptly she appears beside me.
"I've brought you a treat. I found a patch of berries a little farther downstream" she says, brushing the hair from out of my face. Not again, I am not falling for this trick again. Katniss brings a spoonful of the mashed berries up to my mouth. This time they look different. Not red, and they don't smell like the sleeping syrup my mom used to give me. The mash is jet black. NightLock. Katniss is trying to kill me. I back away, dragging the lower half of my body with my arms. A malignant smile creeps onto Katness' face as she traps my neck under her arm. I choke and scream, trying to kick her off of me.
"Shhhhhhh, it will be over before you know it," She whispers, prying my jaw open like its nothing. I cringe as the sour taste of the nightlock berries hit my tongue. I heave as Katniss lifts her arm from off my throat. My relief is short-lived as she instantaneously clamps her hand over my mouth and plugs my nose. "This doesn't have to be difficult. One swallow. One swallow and all this pain will be over."
Nightlock, dead before it even hits your stomach, I remember. I fight underneath her. My lungs burn; they are screaming at me for oxygen. Black spots start the cloud my vision. I'm going to die. Whether that's from asphyxiation, or nightlock was my choice. I finally give in. My throat burns as I swallow. Katniss releases her hands from over my mouse and nose, and I gag and choke. My limbs start to feel heavy; the world around me begins to spin. I can see Katniss mouthing words to me. Why can't I hear her? I can feel her brush my hair out of my face. The pain I once felt begins to splinter away into a raw numbness. Soon the only thing I can discern is my heartbeat. Slow and unnatural. Like the heartbeat of a mutt.
Catching me off guard, the pounding in my ears begins to quicken. As I come back to my senses, I can hear my self gasping for breath. My vision returns soon after my hearing. I see the world speeding past me. More specifically, I see trees speeding past as I sprint through the forest. I feel like I'm not in control of my body. My lungs are on fire, and my muscles feel like they are threatening to snap. But I keep running. Suddenly my head shoots backward, and I know all too well what I'm running from. Mutts. A huge wolf-like creature is sprinting close behind me. But there is something different. I remember the mutts who chased after me in the first games. How could I forget? But this wolf was different, but at the same time... familiar. The smooth brown coat and piercing stern green eyes were all I had to see. This mutt was Katniss. Similar to the wolfs the capital made from the dead tributes in the first games. Katniss was hunting me. And I bet anything, that one stumble, and she wouldn't hesitate to rip me limb from limb. The forest floor becomes a minefield of sticks, rocks, and other things I can't identify given my current situation, but would undoubtedly lead to my inevitable demise if I were unable to avoid them. I feel in control of my body again. The first thing I notice is that the adrenaline that kept me running fast enough to stay ahead of the mutt has warn off. I'm starting to fall behind. Humans weren't built for this kind of physical exertion — my whole body cramps with every wheeze of my exasperated lungs. I feel my eyes begin to roll back into my head. My brain feels like static. Any minute my body is going betray me. I'm knocked back to reality as my foot gets caught on a rock, sending me tumbling down the steep hill. A scream tears through me as the mutt's teeth sink into my leg, dragging me down the hill. Blood smears the dirt behind me as the wolf finally slows down, stopping in the middle of the forest. Pained sobs erupt from deep within my chest. I scream through clenched teeth as the mutt's jaw opens, releasing teeth that were buried deep within my leg. Without warning, it lunges at me, teeth showing, ropes of drool cascading down its chin. I hear a sickening crunch as it jumps on me with all its weight. Hot tears spill down my cheeks as blood bubbles up my throat, leaking out my mouth. I kick and thrash, trying to release my self from under its weight, but I'm too weak. It snarls and snaps at me. I put up my arms in defense, trying to cover my face. Within minutes, my arms are a blood bath. Full of bite marks and cuts. I wail as the rabid dog rips me to pieces. I begin to lose feeling in my limbs, and my vision starts wavering in and out. I'm too weak to defend my self. Deep lacerations scatter my body. It's Tearing into me like I'm nothing but it's next meal. All the while, I stare into its eyes. Katniss' eyes. I feel my mind begin to deteriorate. Please end this. Please end me. I can't take this anymore. My body slowly slips into an empty numbness; this feeling isn't new. This is how most of my hallucinations end, with a numb body and a broken mind. My vision abandoned me a long while ago. Leaving me alone with my thoughts. It's hard to describe how I feel in these moments. When my body is numb and my brain has shut off anyway for me to identify where I am or what's going to happen next. My mind is in such a drug-induced haze; it's forgotten how to perceive the world around me. My eye suddenly shift as sporadic visions of Katniss and Gale flash into my brain. No, please, no. Like my own private movie under my eyelids, I watch Katniss and Gale laughing and smiling as they touch each other in a lust-filled haze. Please make it stop. Every touch, every kiss, fuels a fire buried deep within me. I can feel jealousy brewing in the pit of my stomach. This isn't real. I try to distract my mind, but the hallucinations win every time. I can't stop them. They start to get faster, flashing in and out of my mind like strobe lights. I see visions of my mom, of my family. Of the bombing of District Twelve. I watch as bombs rip them apart — peacekeepers making sure to put a bullet in the heads of anyone who survived the initial explosion. I feel sick to my stomach. My brain is moving at a mile a minute. This isn't real. I repeat it over and over in my mind. Start simple; start with what you know is true. My name is Peeta Malark. My home is District Twelve. I was in the Hunger Games. Katniss was saved. I was left behind.
My eye's open. Fluorescent lights blind me. Where am I. My arms and legs aren't strapped down? I look down; I'm wearing a clean white hospital gown. I look up. A group of people wearing gray jumpsuits are conversing around a clipboard. District thirteen is written on the back. I'm not in the capital anymore. They saved me.
"Should we bring her in?"
Their voices are muffled; I can almost make out what they're saying.
"Are you sure he's ready?"
My head begins to pound, and I lay back down on the bed. Coving my eye's with my hands, taking deep breaths. I'm processing a lot right now. I feel adrift of cool air as the door to the room opens. Looking up, suddenly im staring into those familiar green eye's. I feel my chest begin to swell with anger. My mind flashes back to everything that happened to me in the capital. All the pain I endured. All that emotion, all that damage, it's all because of Katniss. I looked into her eye's as she stabbed me, kicked me, mauled me, drugged me, burned me, killed me. I let my anger control me as I lurch forward, grabbing her by the neck and slamming her down onto the porcelain floor. The look of shock and horror spreading across her face only makes my desire to watch the life drain from her powerless body grow. Hot tears stream down my face. I don't want to kill her. But the resentment I feel needs an outlet. I don't know how to stop it. The need to strangle her feels compulsive. Just a side-effect of a damaged mind. The mind of the capitals weapon. The mind of a Mutt.

Mags Flanagan Character Deep Dive
Tumblr media Tumblr media
FC: Lili Reinhart
Name: Mags Flanagan  Age: 16 during her games, but the fic will highlight a lot of her life Gender: Female District: 4 Victor of the 11th Annual Hunger Games Sexuality: Bisexual Personality : She is reputed to be a lovely woman. She was a motherly type person, always protecting people when she could. If you hurt her, there wasn’t a thing you could do to fix it. History: At the age of 16, Mags became the victor of the 11th Hunger Games. Her skill with fish hooks and other natural skills she likely acquired from living in District 4 probably played a role in her victory. She was the first victor to embark on a Victory Tour, as the victors before her were simply transported home after their victories. She was also presumably the first victor to move to the Victor's Village directly after their Games, as well as the first to receive a token monetary prize for winning, as both ideas were first implemented in the 11th Hunger Games. Little Bird pt.2
Heyoooo! Here’s part two for my Little Bird Everlark series. I won’t be writing the birth scene because I don’t think it’s as important as Peeta meeting the baby. Italics are still flashbacks.
Hope you enjoy!
Turns out giving birth was worse than I could have ever imagined. Even here in the hospital with Prim and my mother and Haymitch. I swallowed my pride at around hour 10 when I called for him even though I was still furious about his hidden plans for me and Peeta. He looked surprisingly awake and healthy, who knew cutting off alcohol was good for you. The following 7 hours were spent in agonizing waves of pain. I cried for Peeta most of it and Haymitch’s left hand won’t be doing anything for a couple of days, but it was worth it.
She was beautiful.
Her smooshed red face came into the world crying. Strong, loud, just like me. Her hair was golden white and full. Her eyes, the most piercing blue I've ever seen besides her father. Even now at one month she still takes my breath away and I doubt that will ever stop. With this new euphoria came the dread of anxiety that never seems to leave me even in my happiest moments.
I spent more time watching her sleep than sleeping, checking her breathing, covering her, uncovering her, and crying. Nightmares came tenfold the first week, images of just her out of my arms would bring on three hour panic attacks. Every cry she made I was forced to push away images of her being beaten and tortured. That first cry she let out moments after being born was the loudest I’ve heard her. Until now.
She wouldn’t stop screaming. Her usual uncomfortable squawks could be quieted by a quick feeding or a walk around the room. It could have been going on for 20 minutes or 20 hours each second was more intense than the last. I thought I knew panic, when I saw my mother get hurt for the first time, when Prim would wake up screaming in the dead of night, when Peeta got taken. Nothing beats how I feel right now, if I could die right here on the spot to stop her pain I would. I would do anything.
She wasn’t hungry, or sleepy, or hurt.
She just wouldn’t stop screaming. I held her, then Prim, even my mother was called from the infirmary to try. Nothing. Everything hurt, my feet were still swollen. My nipples were leaking through my shirt and my head was splitting into three directions. At some point I started crying. Crystalline tears ran down my hot face and onto my shirt. The wetness from the milk and tears made my shirt feel suffocating. Part of me already knew what she wanted and I wanted it too. I wanted him so badly I began to shake.
“ Come on little bird, shh for mama. Please stop crying little one. Please. Please. Please.” it seemed to intensify when I spoke.
“Can you sing” Rue’s little face pops into my head then. Her beautiful brown eyes sparkling with tears looking up at me. The same small eyes looking at me now only reminded me of Peeta. Of course I'll sing for you Rue.
“ I remember tears streaming down your face when I said I'll never let you go When all those shadows almost killed your light I remember you said don't leave me here alone But all that's dead and gone and passed tonight
Just close your eyes, the sun is going down You'll be alright, no one can hurt you now Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound
Don't you dare look out your window, darling everything's on fire The war outside our door keeps raging on Hold onto this lullaby even when the music's gone, gone
Just close your eyes, the sun is going down
You'll be alright, no one can hurt you now Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound”
Her cries stopped almost immediately. We stood rocking back and fourth in the glow of the  orange light from the sun lamp. Slowly she began the close her eyes, giving in easily to the feeling of being held. She was just like Peeta. Those days spent on the victory tour where he held me, I held onto him and it provided peace for both of us. The thought of sleeping next to him makes me ache with longing.
I thought I was done needing people after Prim was born. Then came Gale and I needed him to survive. I was sure to be set for the rest of my life if I just had them. But Peetas full smile had wormed it’s way onto the list and now he comes third to our baby and Prim.
I needed him so badly it burned to try and say it aloud like I had swallowed his brightness and it sat like the sun in the back of throat. It was impossible not to need him, to feel the warmth in my stomach when he would kiss me for just a second too long.
The last time I saw him he was warning us about what a war could mean. The bag under his eyes darkened his whole face. The violet and indigo bruises on his neck were still visible under all the makeup. His voice didn’t even sound like him, it sounded distorted and tired. It used to freak me out when Peeta would tell me he loved me or missed me. How could he be so open? Wasn’t he afraid? Now, I wish more than anything I could hear him tell me he loves me. I won’t hesitate to say it back now, not even for a second.

2 Weeks Later....
I’m walking so quickly my calves burn by the time I reach the doorway. There are people moving in every direction, soldiers, doctors, nurses, Gale.
He stands guard outside a door. His riot gear is still on and his eyes are low. He’s alive. And unharmed. I want to speak to him but I don’t, not here. There’s a pull toward the door has guarding and I know Peeta is behind it.
Rushing toward the door Gale see’s me and begins to walk away when he stops himself and abruptly turns toward me as if he forgot something.
“ Be careful Katniss, I don't know what they did to him but he looks rough.”
I stand blinking at him for a few seconds before he turns away and down the hall. I wanted to say thank you but the words got stuck. There’s too much to say. Maybe later I'll find him and say thank you.
For now, I can see the back of Peeta’s head through the open door.
“Peeta” His name slips from my lips with a sigh. He looks so weak and sad even from where I stand but at least he’s here now. He can go to the hospital with Prim and she’ll make him better. For now it’s enough to see him. To feel way my heart is beating, to hold our baby in my arms and be together as a family for the first time.
Making my way toward him I can see the various colors of his skin. They must have burned him several times directly on the back of his neck. His arms are littered with small cuts and covered in odd shaped bruises. The hair on his head is filthy and matted in some parts on the sides. His spine is peaking through the open back of the gown and it’s bony protrusions look incredibly sharp.
He’s alive. He’s here.
As I turn come around to his face I stop myself short. My feet root themselves in place not wanting to get any closer to him. Something is very wrong.
Before I have time to process he’s looking into my eyes. They are sunken in deeply and I can’t find any white. It’s all a mixture of purple red and blue. His lips, what I thought were smiling, seem to be curling up in a snarl. He’s practically growling at me, panting and jerking his head from side to side.
I tale another step back, nervous to aggravate him further.
What have I done?
Snow did this to Peeta. But he really did it to me. Because i'm the mockingjay, and because Peeta is my husband. My own feelings about the capitol would be dealt with later.
“ Peeta. It’s me. You’re in thirteen, we are safe”
Haymitch steps into the room behind Peeta and he nods for me to continue.
I have no idea what else to say to him now. What if I make him worse?
Quickly I realize there’s a baby in my arms. She’s sleeping peacefully in a sling that allows only her face and arms to show.
“ Peeta-” I begin but he interrupts me now
“ Get away from me mutt. And take your spawn with you” His voice speaks so clearly I jump a bit. It’s sharp and not his own.
Mutt.
He called me a mutt?
A sick feeling settles into my chest and stomach, drowning me in dread. He must be confused with someone else, maybe a torturer from his time in the capitol that looked like me. Maybe he doesn’t recognize me now. Peeta, the boy who’s saved my life a million times over, who loves me, who is so kind he wouldn’t hurt a fly unless it was to protect me, just called me a mutt. I want to flee. I want to run and hide in an old broom closet with my baby. Four walls, darkens, and my own head. The anxiety builds now and I feel a sweat begin to break down my back.
Just run, Katniss. Pick up your feet and run.
Just then the baby lets out a series of defeating cries and Peeta’s drowsy eyes go wide.
