STEPNEY VISITS ARVERNE
by A. Griffin/ Super Train Station H ---------------------------------
From Sheffield Park so far away, to the narrow stretch of Rockaway, the young at heart count down the days, till Stepney visits Arverne.
A tour spanning across the world, bringing joy to every boy and girl, now New York City gets its turn, when Stepney visits Arverne.
The Bluebell Railway's long revered, does blow her chime so all will hear, and beyond its sound, is spread the cheer, when Stepney visits Arverne.
Brightly the merry whistle tones, beach rabbits scurry to their holes, folks rush out from their bungalows, when Stepney visits Arverne.
Long Island Rail Road right of way, between the ocean and the bay, will carry her throughout her stay, when Stepney visits Arverne.
Backyards on Amstel Boulevard, from there wave children from afar, they see the engine working hard, when Stepney visits Arverne.
Each of her cars, a wooden coach, on streams of steel, away they float, within the sight of canal boats, when Stepney visits Arverne.
These tracks knew steam so long ago, and reminded of the days of old, the beachside rails do creak and groan, when Stepney visits Arverne.
Subway cars get traction too, watch Stepney pull R32s, the silver cars glisten like new, when Stepney visits Arverne.
The engine painted muted gold, whispers with steam the stories told, of escape from scrap, so brave and bold, when Stepney visits Arverne.
The Jay Street Cargo Railroad yard, meets the London South Coast Railway's star, the Brukelen Bridge isn't so so far, when Stepney visits Arverne.
Suited commuters, office bound, are caught off guard by what they've found, tank engine strength gets them around, when Stepney visits Arverne.
Beach 67th needs crowd control, when the famous train is due to roll, perfect shots are the spotter's goal, when Stepney visits Arverne.
Long Island multi-unit cars, though motors rest, they travel far, the engine takes them from the yard when Stepney visits Arverne.
She brought the Pullman coaches too, for dining pleasure on the move, the bayside vistas set the mood, when Stepney visits Arverne.
Not everyone's seen steam before, but the magic they'll learn to adore, from the "Floreat Vapor" ambassador, when Stepney visits Arverne.
And off she goes, all by herself, to have adventures somewhere else, but she came before, and she'll come again, and a few more seaside days she'll spend, on the ocean line, with the blue H sign, when Stepney visits Arverne.
---------------------------------
Arverne is a neighborhood situated between the Atlantic Ocean and Jamaica Bay on New York City’s Rockaway Peninsula.
London Brighton South Coast Railway No. 55, “Stepney”, is a tank engine that was built in 1875 and now lives at the Bluebell Railway in England.
The artwork of Lunarian H (my own character) and Stepney in Arverne was provided by Keetah Spacecat.

hang on. there is actually a station in london called pancreas?? is it on the red line too this is very important information
i'm not a Londoner, nor from the UK, I don't know if it's on the red line. 😭😭 The only thing I know is that it's the terminus for the Eurostar, coming from Paris. @emmalovesfitzloved could help you with this one.
this is what I found on wiki.
"St Pancras railway station (/ˈpæŋkrəs/), officially known since 2007 as London St Pancras International, is a central London railway terminus on Euston Road in the London Borough of Camden. It is the terminus for Eurostar services from Belgium, France and the Netherlands to London. It provides East Midlands Railway services to Leicester, Corby, Derby, Sheffield and Nottingham on the Midland Main Line, Southeastern high-speed trains to Kent via Ebbsfleet International and Ashford International, and Thameslink cross-London service to Bedford, Cambridge, Peterborough, Brighton, Horsham and Gatwick Airport. It stands between the British Library, the Regent's Canal and London King's Cross railway station, with which it shares a London Underground station, King's Cross St Pancras."

We have had a splendidly naughty weekend in Manchester and even the fickle Manc weather was fairly kind to us. It was wonderful to see the girls even though time was short and considering it is nearly 13 years since we saw most of them none have aged a day, quite amazing.
Onward.
Avid reader will remember that the plan was after we'd had the engine serviced we were going to do the Llangollen canal then up to Manchester and over the Pennines down as far as Sheffield. But after losing 9 weeks having the most expensive service in boat history we have decided that we don't have time to cross over to Yorkshire and see everything we wanted to see and also we are getting notifications telling us there are water restrictions already on parts of the Leeds/Liverpool and we don't want to get stuck waiting for it to rain. So we have decided to now do the magnificent Llangollen, it'll be busy with pesky holiday boats but we're in no hurry and it is a beautiful waterway.
So this morning we'll start up the beast and head back the way we've come to Middlewich and then across the arm, onto the Shroppie for a mile then turn right onto the Llangollen.
We're heading back to Wales again but this time in a boat.

East Ontario: Bon Echo and Ottawa areas
And off I go! 9am Thursday 1st June I'm starting my cross Canada road trip with an overloaded car and at 54,836km...
Tumblr media
First stop is one of my favourite things in Ontario; paddle boarding along the Mazinaw Rock in Bon Echo Provincial Park, midway between Toronto and Ottawa. After having traversed the entire GTA one last time on the QEW, Gardiner, DVP and 401 highways, I finally escaped the madness and got to spend a few lovely hours on the water, searching for the pictographs that Indigenous people created a long time ago. The first time I tried to find them was with my mother by kayak, but not having a clue what it exactly was that we were looking for, we found none until we realised on a boat tour that they're tiny and just above the water, whereas we had been craning our neck to scour the high cliffs for anything that seemed remotely like a drawing 😂. Since then, I had already come back once to explore by SUP, however now in the mid-week quiet without other tourists & motorboats it was magical!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Starting my trip during an unexpected heatwave (32C!) has been tiring as I was constantly sweating but at least it meant I was not freezing at night which had been my fear. In the morning I did my regular 20-minute hulahoop wake-up routine but this time on the beach overlooking the cliffs... Great way to start the day and as bonus there were no mosquitos!! I kinda had forgotten how bad it can be in spring, but after two miserable attempts at a hike, I realised I will be doing most of my exploring by water until the bugs have died off. That said, so far it's only been mosquitos which have mass-targeted me, without the deer/black/sand/other nasty flies, so I guess it can & will still get much worse.
Instead of hiking, I ended up paddling two little lakes at Sheffield Conservation Area just south of Bon Echo, which is the most southern location to experience the Canadian Shield... it was not as majestic as up north but the bare granite rocks hold their beauty wherever they are! The channel between the lakes turned out to be blocked by a beaver dam, which made me realize that the pretty water lilies that I had seen earlier were basically the beaver's vegetable garden 😜. I had never seen a beaver dam up close from the water, so it was cool to see how it's constructed with a slope of soil upstream, intertwined with branches for extra stability. I tried to spot the beaver as well, but no luck (the only time I've seen a beaver was at Leslie Spit in Toronto of all places!). Someone had already created a little portage trail around the dam so that I could continue to the next lake and eat lunch on a little island (with my feet out of the water as the fish were trying to nibble).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Am now on a campground on the Quebec side for 3 nights to spend some time around Ottawa; after not having done a campfire on the first night I was looking forward to one and bought a 1-kilo bag of marshmallows and my favourite chocolate (dark, orange & sea salt) for s'mores, but the entire province is under a fire ban due to the many forest fires that are out of control.... Am afraid this is going to be a recurring theme this summer, we need to fix climate change asap!! Without a fire to chase them away, I'm already completely fed up with the mosquitos at the end of the 2nd day, so I spent the evening in my "living room" tent, which is a blissful haven to eat, read and drink some wine.
Tumblr media
Spent Saturday very chilled in the capital; although downtown Ottawa is small it is very lively due to all the tourists (like me) and I always enjoy walking around the highlights; I had planned to visit the National Art Gallery but wasn't attracted by any of the current exhibits so gave it a miss and visited the neighbouring Royal Mint instead for what turned out to be a private tour of the facilities - cool to see how they make 99.99% pure silver and gold coins! Thereafter past the Rideau Canal to Parliament Hill which was disappointing because of the construction but also because I couldn't find my favourite sculpture 'Women are Persons!" celebrating the suffragette movement that allowed women to vote...I did find it later in front of the Senate building, but only after I attended (unplanned) the annual D-Day commemorative ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We cannot afford forgetting the horrible impacts of war so it was a sobering but important moment. I ended on a Byward patio; nothing beats drinking a beer in the sun and watch the world go by!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And today I had a beautiful day at Gatineau Park where I had never been despite having wanted to on previous trips, due to rain/snow etc...I initially did not plan to hike and go supping instead but there was a lot of wind and it turned out no mosquitos due to the cooler weather, so I ended up doing several hikes after all, up to some viewpoints that were no longer visible (as is often the case as they don't cut the trees so that beautiful view when the bench was installed 10+ years ago is long gone), around Pink Lake which is green from the many algae, and to a waterfall that hadn't seen a lot of rain but was pretty nevertheless. I always struggle with making forest hike pictures interesting as it's very green without much variation and not able to capture the true essence of hearing the wind & the birds, the dappled light on the forest floor etc. Tried anyway, and also made a picture of the forest along the parkway to capture the bright apple green of the trees in spring, so refreshing! Ended the day at the Champlain lookout over the Ottawa valley.
Not sure I'll keep up writing so much each time but am clearly excited about how the trip has started so far! 😍
Tumblr media
Wildlife: 1 marmot (Bon Echo), 2 male mergansers fighting with each other (Bon Echo), 10,000 mosquitos (Bon Echo), 2 snakes (Toronto Island and Sheffield), 2 turtles (Gatineau), 2 deer (along the road in Gatineau)
SUPs: three (Toronto Island, Bon Echo, Sheffield)
Hikes: one small one (eaten alive) and one aborted (more eaten alive), both at Bon Echo. Three hikes at Gatineau (no single mosquito bite!)

Barnsley's history
Barnsley's most famous for its markets, brass bands and coal mining heritage.
in 1802 the Barnsley canal became a very important connection to the fire-calder navigation system. this gave the wool factories of Wakefield, Leeds, and Branford access to barnskleys coalfields.
miners strikes: in the 1980s barnsley became the centre of the minors strikes. this divided the mining communitiesnwith the district. in the end of the minors strikes all Barnsley's coal mines were closed down in 1994. this was a massive loss for the town and took the people a long time to come to terms with.
brass bands: barnsley is home to a tradition of brass bands. grimehtrope colliery band which is located in grime throe is the best known brass bands in Britain. it rose to fame bybeig in the film brassed off and is now at the royal college of music in London. they have performed in places such as Hyde Park, and ;picnic in the park.
Ian mcmilian: he writes a column in the Barnsley chronicle. he was nominated for a chair of poetry at Oxford university and appears on abc radio 4. he has a barnsley accent which is stafrting ti were off during younger generations, but is the most maintained Yorkshire accent.
kes: this was a dilm that was set and filmed in several villages in Barnsley. which include Lundwood and Monk Bretton. it also used local actors.
music scene: there is a massive scene of music surrounding barnsley which first reached its height during britpop years around 1997 due to its close proximity towards Sheffield and Manchester. two of the famous band members the arctic monkeys studied music at barnsley college. barnsley is home to several live music venues and hosts BOMfest an outdoor summer festival.

June 4th, Sheffield IL
Up early again and headed west on the canal trail. 6 miles in the trail became a grass field. We turned around and a mile back was the feeder canal which also had a path. Better but still a lot of debris and Ricky chucks.
Made it to the Aqueduct crossing green river before turning back. 24 miles and hot but a stronger breeze today.
Met a couple of nice Tiffin couples (too many couples in that sentence). One couple will be volunteering with us at the rally.
Packed up for an early departure to HWH in Moscow Iowa tomorrow. Have to be there before 9am.

Diary of an Intermittent Runner - Weeks 13, 14, 15 and 16
Another much delayed update!!!!!! Things are a bit manic here at the moment - it's the start of the exam silly season, which means work has gone mad, and we are having building work done at home. Have managed to keep up with the Parkruns and do a fair bit of running.
One of the totally bizarre things that I ended up doing when James was having his treatment was to Tweet famous people that James (and I) liked. I can remember first doing it in the middle of the night - there may have been drink involved! To my amazement, and eternal gratitude, a number of people replied and sent wonderful messages (and we are still in contact with quite a few of these brilliant people). Something that started as a bit of a distraction became, for me, one of the most supportive things throughout 2019. One message in particular has stayed with me. I'm not going to name the people who got in touch. This one message was from someone who knew what we were going through. The part of the message that meant (and still means) so much to me was asking how Bec and I were and to make sure that we looked after ourselves. This hadn't even crossed our mind. We were totally focused on James' treatment, but in hindsight we should looked after ourselves a bit more!!!!
This challenge that I am doing is one that I am pretty much making up as I go along! The 50 Parkruns in the year was the starting point (with trying to do those nearest to the Teenage Cancer Trust units getting there - slowly). One thing I would really like to come out of this is to highlight the work of all the cancer charities that I am running for - and as many others that are working hard for patients, families and friends. Support is there and no-one will go through this horrible time alone.
Hopefully, the next update will arrive a little sooner than this one!!!!
The Parkruns that I have completed since the last update are:
Shrewsbury Parkrun - a lovely run along the river Severn (with a bit of hill at the start!!!)
Tumblr media
Brueton Park Parkrun - a really good two-lap run in Brueton Park in Solihull (with a hill!!!!!!!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sheffield Castle Parkrun - a three-lap run (hills on each lap!!) near to the TCT unit at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dudley Parkrun - lots going on at this one!!! Running track, canal towpath, trail, big hill, disused railway. Brilliant!!!!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The soundtrack for the last few weeks has been:
Sparks - In Outer Space
Public Service Broadcasting - The Race for Space
Manic Street Preachers - The Ultra Vivid Lament
Manic Street Preachers - Resistance is Futile
Talk Talk - The Colour of Spring
Manic Street Preachers - Futureology
Ultravox - Vienna
Sparks - Pulling Rabbits Out of a Hat
Ultravox - Rage in Eden
Heaven 17 - The Luxury Gap (had to listen to this in Sheffield - and had a like from Martyn Ware!!!)
Sparks - Music to Dance To
Sparks - Interior Design
David Bowie - No Trendy Réchuffé
Sparks - Gratuitous Sax & Senseless Violins
Back to Worcester Pitchcroft for the next couple of weeks (to see the 5K Your Way people next week and just need to do a very local one the week after).
Take care
Pete
