Thor: The Dark World - Deleted Scene, Alternate Frigga Death
youtube
Let's talk about this scene. What did Malekith mean by "is that what he told you?" talking about Bor. Is there another truth to the story the previous king told his son?
Why did Odin not fire at them? Gungnir does have the power to kill with one charge. I hated how Frigga KNEW he was going to sacrifice her to protect the Aether. (and still tried to get him to free her :'(
Had he held them up for a few seconds longer, Thor would have had the time to strike properly.
I still wish they would have shot the scene as mentioned in this post.
What do we think? I'd love to hear your guys' opinions on this one if you have any.

Did you get to choose the new team or was it the studio? Yes, no.
Have you had conversations with Marvel about their plans for the guardians now that you’re done? Yes
Are there any deleted scenes with Llyla, Rocket, Floor, and Teef? No.
Did you ever consider inserting any other Marvel characters to cross over into this picture? No
Is there a reason Quill didn't have his helmet in Guardians 3? It’s in his desk drawer in Knowhere. He had to get out of there fast as you know!
Is there an in-universe explanation as to why Quill’s ditched his helmet and rocket boots? They have jet packs. The rocket boots comparatively suck. That's like cheap shit you get in the intergalactic version of Radio Shack. And Chris could never have done those amazing hallway moves with a helmet on.
Was there a plan for a new helmet design for Star-Lord (the classic design would’ve been cool)? No.
In the scene where Rocket and Groot are dancing, was that you and your brother on set? Yes
I was VERY curious on how Drax knew the JOOB JOOB but Mantis didn’t being Ego’s translator? Drax knew the language from his childhood. It's not in anyone's translators.
Why did no one understand, or acknowledge the language on Counter-Earth not being recognized by their translators? It's a cloistered culture. It would be normal not to have their Humanimal language in the translators.
Was the line always going to be “I love you guys” or did you have other options? No
Was there any consideration given towards giving the one spoken “F***” in the movie to Groot? Consideration? Sure.
Was redesigning Howard The Duck your idea? Yes. I've redesigned him on every movie because I've never been satisfied and we were rushed the first couple times. I'm happier now.
Did you ever think about giving Howard the Duck a bigger role in these movies (just asking because he’s my favorite Marvel Character)? Yes.
Does your average MCU earthling know that the Guardians of the Galaxy exist? No
Was Miley Cyrus not able to reprise her role from Guardians 2? Was that the same character? Yes. Yes.
James is Adam Warlock single? Yes
Has Grandpa Quill heard about Peter’s world-saving adventures already? No.
Does Peter Quill’s grandfather know about Ego? No
Was there an actual dog playing Cosmo or was that CGI? No, yes.
Was the Eagle in the cage an Eagly reference? Or just an Eagle? That was actually the real Eagly.
Can Groot grow a new body very quickly now? Yes.
Will there be Vol 4? No.
Will there ever be a director’s cut of the trilogy? Yes (the trilogy as is is the Director's Cut)
Do you want to do an extended version? No.
Does Guardians 3 have an alternate ending planned? No.
Will there be a longer cut of the film that has more Michael Rosenbaum in it? No
Will there be a commentary version of this film? Yes
As early as when you were making GOTG 1, did you already have ideas on where Vol 2 and 3 would go that eventually made it in the final films? Or were your initial ideas totally overhauled along the way? Yes, no.
Did you have to fight/negotiate hard with Disney to have all of those dark scenes? Or were the pretty open to your final vision? No. Yes.
Was it difficult writing Gamora’s arc in Vol 3, knowing Infinity War was going to kill her off? No.
Nebula's arm is the Bucky's arm from Holiday Special?? No. It's way better.
I saw you mentioned Annihilus as a possible villain for Vol 3. Was he also going to be a candidate for Rockets creator? Yes.
Does Rocket keep in contact with Thor? No.
Is there a super big, deeply-hidden Easter egg like the first one? Yes.
Did Bradley do all the young Rocket voice work too? No (Noa Raskin is baby Rocket, Sean Gunn is Young Rocket)
Since Halfworld isn't a thing in the MCU (I guess this is what you retconned out from the 1st movie) does that mean Rocket isn't a halfworlder in the MCU, right? You could consider Halfworld a more intergalactic name for Counter-Earth.

Frigga's chambers
The Queen of Asgard's chambers are the most depicted chambers in the MCU, so this post will be bigger than the previous one about Thor's chambers.
First the entrance.
Tumblr media
The door is gold and heavy with decorations.
Tumblr media
Malekith enters Frigga's chambers through it, you can see small steps from the door to the main chamber.
Tumblr media
Here comes Odin through the door. You can see that there are candlesticks on both sides of the door.
Tumblr media
Here's a shot from above of the entire room. You can see the figures of dead guards in the doorway. Malekith killed them before entering the queen's chamber.
To the right of the entrance to the chamber there are stairs to the terrace, and in the corner you can see a jug.
There is a swimming pool in the middle of the room - I will analyze this in more detail later.
Tumblr media
The terrace has several steps and columns.
Tumblr media
There is a space here between the door and the terrace, in the corner there is a jug with decorations. Also there is a window behind the door to Frigga's chambers.
Tumblr media
Here you can see in detail the stairs to the terrace and the vegetation on it.
Tumblr media
You can see patterns on the railing and some of the vegetation here.
Tumblr media
Here you can see in detail the decorations on the terrace and on one of the columns.
Tumblr media
Here you can see a terrace with columns and plants in a golden pot.
Tumblr media
One last look at the terrace where you can see the plants in golden pots on the other side.
Tumblr media
The next important location in Frigga's chamber is the pool in the center of the room. The pool is located between the opening door and the next door, with a chaise lounge next to it. The chaise longue is located elsewhere in the room, next to another door. During the fight, they open - here we see red streaks in the distance that resemble couch or soft furniture. Later I will show more of this room, because it showed in deleted scene of Dark World.
Tumblr media
As a reminder, I show again what the front door looks like to show that the door in the previous picture is different.
This is this door.
Tumblr media
The pool is right in front of the second door. These doors have a similar style to the front door and also have candles between them.
Tumblr media
Here you can see the chaise lounge from the previous photo.
Back to the pool.
Tumblr media
You can see that the pool has a stone base, on it you can see pillows, a golden bowl, and a jug of water. It's a place of relaxation and peace.
I also wanted to draw your attention to the place near the terrace, it's another room, not room between opening door and pool next to chaise lounge. This is more visible in the deleted scene, but this is the second space in the middle of the room with a door - you can see a sofa and a table in the distance. Probably a place for gossip and meals
Tumblr media
Flower petals float in the pool, and in the space between the first door in the chambers and the second there are windows and jugs.
Tumblr media
You can see better here that in the second room in the chamber there is a beautiful green sofa with brown pillows, a table and a window with delicate curtains.
Tumblr media
Here you can see Thor and Frigga coming out of the first room, the one between the front door and the pool. Then they pass by the other room and go to the terrace. I recommend watching the deleted scene to see it better.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The room between the pool and the entrance door to the chamber. Here you can clearly see that Thor and Frigga are leaving this room, you can see both part of the pool and the terrace in the distance.
Tumblr media
You can clearly see here that the room they came out of is the room next to the green chaise longue. Now a little about this room.
Tumblr media
As I said earlier, you can see some red stripes in the distance that resemble some soft furniture. In the deleted scene, we briefly see a fragment of this room.
Tumblr media
There is a window, a candlestick, a fireplace and another chaise longue.
Tumblr media
There is also a mirror, a table and a cup.
And here we have Endgame shots from chamber of Queen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some unknown parts of Frigga's chambers also appear in Endgame, but unlike Dark World, I don't know where they are - perhaps in the room next to the terrace. But the style is clearly different here… than in Dark World.
Or we will concluded that the Avengers did not travel to the past so much, but to the dimensions where those particular years were… so in this dimension the queen's chamber looked different… and Thor was probably traumatized and probably forgot many things and all he cared about was that again he saw his mother… if the Dimensions thing is right… maybe Frigga was right not to tell her about her future. Because it didn't have to happen to her, since this dimension was different. It was enough that she went to her chambers much earlier because of Thor 2023… it could already make a big difference for her future fate. 2013 Frigga was not in her chambers at this time, but in the city, where she met Jane and Thor while exploring Asgard and then returned with Jane to the palace…where attack started. We know that Thor and Rocket arrived in Asgard in the morning. Jane lay sleeping. Then in the Dark World there was some exploring of Asgard and then the Elf attack began.
But these are loose thoughts, just why Endgame's architecture doesn't match Dark World's architecture.
I'm posting a deleted scene from Dark World here.

I don’t know how I feel when people say they ‘want the old Loki back’…
Whilst I get it, trust me, Dark World Loki made my knees weak, but I think the version we have now is so much better… Ragnarok Loki quickly became my favourite for the pure fact that he finally began to accept himself, he was willing to sacrifice himself to save Thor, because there ain’t no way my man picked up that dagger and didn’t know he was gonna die I—
TVA Loki is more grounded. He was shown that his whole desire for a throne was ultimately meaningless (I mean in the grand scheme and tbh he never really wanted it in the first place, just wanted to be Thors equal). Even when Miss Minutes and He Who Remains tries to tempt him into getting his throne, sure he falters for a moment, but he knows that isn’t his purpose now. He is actively trying to not do what led to his mothers death. Be bitter and callous (or at least portray that that’s who he is when we all know he’s always had a heart and is emotional).
Sure, i get it, you want intimidating Loki, powerful Loki, threatening Loki… But episode two showed he can still be those things, except now with more restraint. And I actually think it makes him more intimidating that he was so ‘goofy’ and casual in how he spoke to Brad during the interrogation scenes. His calmer demeanour instead of blind rage is scary.
Loki has a duality that many characters don’t. He can be the tough intimidating guy, he can be the emotional guy, he can be the problem solver and the problem maker, he can be a good friend and a bad one… He’s so multifaceted and I think only wanting the ‘villainous’ side of him diminishes his character slightly.
I related to Loki in Thor 1 because to me he was someone who was lost, confused and hurt, lashing out like… well, like a child. And we now know that that role had been thrusted upon him due to his supposed ‘path on the sacred timeline’, that he was ‘made to cause others pain’. But he’s learning that it doesn’t have to be that way, that he can simply be himself without the hardened armour, the mask of a villain. It was always clear he didn’t enjoy hurting people. The fact he cried when he was fighting Thor, he cried when his mother died, even when his father died he was upset (despite me thinking odin didn’t deserve it but anyways…)
And everyone likes to reference the scene where Loki is taking that man’s eyeball in the Avengers, but if the theory is correct he was under the influence of the mind stone, then it was most likely amplifying his darker thoughts and emotions, hence the smile. He finally felt like he held the power, he had the upper hand. It wasn’t about the torture he was inflicting, it was about how people finally were viewing him as someone to take seriously, be afraid of. (Plus I really doubt at that point marvel even had in mind how his character would progress considering I don’t think any of them expected Loki to become a beloved character, hence why I take that scene with a pinch of salt).
People also say ‘how did he go from this to this’ or ‘this the same Loki that did this’, like… People can be multifaceted… They can have different sides to themselves… I think if deleted scenes with Loki weren’t cut, it wouldn’t feel that way so much to some people. For example the deleted Thor and Loki scene from Thor 1 where he turns the wine into snakes, showing his childish like mischief, him telling Thor he loved him despite his own jealousy. That one little scene would’ve added more depth to his character (in that film), and the scene with his mother where he gets given the throne? Ugh, should’ve been kept in because it showed his shock at being given that power. And also, his plan - whilst yes, bad and misguided - was all about trying to prove himself, and protect his family in the process from the ‘monsters’ that he saw himself as, almost to be like ‘see I’m not like them, look-‘.. I—
I want to see Loki feel accepted, banter with Mobius, eating pie even though it’s too sweet, embracing his powers and magic for good (and mischief ofc), be honest and talking about his past/emotions, beginning to realise that he can be whoever he wants. He doesn’t have to fit in a box, not a villain or a hero, but someone who is flawed and is trying his best.
Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

One of the things I've been thinking about recently is how most of the things that upset me about The Dark World relate to pacing, and cutting a significant portion of Jane's storyline so that she ends up a damsel in distress for a huge chunk of the movie. It's a massive disservice to the character and the actor, and I remember really empathizing with how frustrated Natalie Portman was when Patty Jenkins was no longer available because she had mostly signed up to do the movies specifically to work with Jenkins.
But I remembered that apart from scrapping the entire original Jane and Thor ending where they break up and also Odin voluntarily leaving Asgard and decides to wander Earth for a while, that they had gone back and added scenes with Loki. I kept thinking that they were more of the banter while attempting to fly Malekith's ship, but it turns out it was two scenes that I can't actually imagine the movie without.
I had some notes saved in a file but I had to figure out where they came from so I actually dug up the original article from 2013.
Here are the excerpts that are relevant to my and probably other Loki fans interests:
[Director Alan] Taylor was very clear to say they were not "reshoots," but "additional photography," he gave some insight into the Marvel process:
"It's my experience with the Marvel process they save a portion of the budget for this and what we were basically doing. A lot of it was getting more Loki stuff, because we realized how successful he was in the movie, so we sort of "Loki-ed it up" a little bit.
"There's a scene that we probably shouldn't identify too much, that's one of the funniest scenes in the movie where Loki's a shapeshifter. That was a very, very late addition. And there's a connective thing at the beginning that bridges from The Avengers story to sort of explain how Loki is in prison or why he is in prison. That was a very, very late addition. That was probably "more Loki is a good thing," but also we decided it was an expositional link that was needed for the audience. So those are two examples of Loki stuff."
Tom Hiddleston further clarified:
"[The bridge scene and morphing] were the only scenes [added], yeah. What does it do, adding scenes? It's interesting, because I had actually always wanted there to be that scene with Odin. I remember saying when I first got the draft of the script, "Shouldn't he have a scene with Odin where you see them lock horns one more time?" So I was very glad to do that and I think it makes more sense of the references to Odin all the way through the film.
"And the morphing scene was just so fun. It was just adding more mischief, more playfulness to the character. His charm is so much of the character and is a facet I love to play. I suppose the challenge of adding stuff later is just trying to capture the same psychological and emotional continuity, because there were many months between... Of course when you're shooting, that's when you're focused solely on that particular job and then once you wrap you go off and get distracted by other things, other projects in your life. So it's having the discipline to shift back into the right gear, but it was worth it."
You definitely want to read the entire article because from a production standpoint, the fact that they were still rewriting well into post-production. like they didn't have a complete script until picture lock which I just can't even imagine. No wonder Idris Elba was so disgusted with the process that he asked specifically to be killed off in the next film. and I know that Christopher Eccleston was very disappointed in the final film because a lot of the material that he shot was cut. and the thing is if you look at all of the excise material, and all of the additional photography, it would be very easy to recut the movie into a significantly better movie in every way.
The deleted scenes with Jane and Odin by the way are not available on any of the home entertainment releases that I've seen. The only place I found them was on YouTube. If I can dig up the links, I will post them next.

Concerning Frigga
I've seen a few posts & fics comparing Frigga to Odin and saying she too was an awful parent with awful intentions. But I really don't think this was the case? I mean, obviously she did some wrong things that fucked Loki up, but I don't think they are all entirely her fault. It is my belief that she was being emotionally abused/manipulated by Odin.
I think the biggest and most obvious example of this is from a deleted scene from the first Thor film (2011) [and before you call it invalid because it was deleted, they deleted a lot of scenes showing both Frigga's and Loki's characterization to make it more about Thor. There was nothing in the scene that was contradictory to the film, nor was it to far-fetched to have a good reason to be scrapped. Therefor, i view it as canon]. But anyways, within the scene, Frigga confronts Odin on Thor's banishment. She is very obviously distraught at the loss of her son, and angry at Odin's choice (obviously)(also, i mean, she wasn't even there for it). However, Odin just dismisses her for her emotions, says that his lack of emotion made him superior in the situation, and that he has his reasons for it and she is crazy for questioning him. Very obviously mental/emotional manipulation/abuse.
There are more subtle examples at other times, however.
In Thor: The Dark World (2013), there is a scene in which Frigga mentions that Odin "Never was a good liar" [I couldn't find a clip of the scene that included it, as it was sort of a transition, but the segment starts at 40:46 in the movie, and she says it at 41:09]. She says this despite Odin lying about Hela's existence to like, everyone ever (and was pretty successful at his cover-up), and also lying to Loki about his true heritage (and that cover-up was pretty successful for several centuries). Odin seems to be pretty good at lying. By Odin letting Frigga believe he is a bad liar (at least at smaller things), it lets him have her twisted around his fingers even more.
In addition, Frigga defends Odin's awful actions, notable in the first Thor film, in a scene where Frigga and Loki are conversing while Odin is in the Odinsleep. Frigga admits to wanting to have told Loki of his Jotünn heritage from the beginning, but Odin forbade it. When Loki asks for more information, Frigga says it's because Odin loved him and didn't want him to feel different. Pretty bullshit reasoning, but it looks like Frigga legitimately, honestly believes the words (words that were most likely told to her by Odin, probably in 'conversation' much like in the deleted scene previously mentioned). In this scene, she also defends Odin's decision to banish Thor, saying Odin always has a reason for everything (much like what Odin had yelled at her about in his chastisement in the same previous deleted scene).
While some may attribute this to her honestly agreeing with Odin and being a reflection on her beliefs & morals (and therefore being a horrible person as well), this probably isn't the case given what we have seen of her. It is actually quite common for victims to defend their abuser's actions. In this article by Dr. Sirota (a psychiatrist with over 25 years of mental health experience), she explains many, many reasons as to why this is (including the "crazy-making" tactic Odin was showed utilizing in that first scene mentioned).
Not to mention, in actual norse mythology/Asatro, Frigga (actually called Frigg) is deemed the goddess of marriage, amongst other things. If this aspect of her carries over into her MCU version, she may even feel pressured to stay with Odin- after all, what is the goddess of marriage with a failing marriage? So she either doesn't/can't recognize Odin's flaws and corruption, or is in denial about them due to this.
I really don't think Frigga was truly a bad parent (in the sense that she didnt care/didnt try), nor a bad person at heart. It is made very apparent on multiple occasions that Frigga truly loves Loki. While it is mainly shown in scenes in which she is directly talking to Loki, it is also shown even when Loki is not present, confirming that it is not a ruse. She even went out of her way and defied Odin's wishes to visit him (which is a big testament to her love for Loki, considering how much she falls in line with Odin the rest of the time). While she definitely has her flaws (there are hints to racism/excusing racism, as that is pretty normal in Asgard, apparently), I cannot help but wonder how much of that is also Odin's fault?(actually likely just the. culture of asgard's fualt) (btw not trying to excuse racism, racism is very obviously bad)
But anyways in the end, I think Frigga was a good parent to the best of her abilities given her situation and own problems, and it sort of makes me sad to see people talking about how awful she was :( Let's just shit on Odin

Gif Thor washing his hands after the battle and Jane waking up in Asgard (dark world). It looks like they sleeping together.
I'm really sorry I won't be able to make the set because I don't like making sets that show something that isn't happening in the scene/misrepresent it. Marvel will have to show them waking up together for me to make it 😤. But yes you're right it does look like it 😭
Like, I'm sorry, why have we never seen them sleep or wake up together? EVEN when they were living together? Why????
We see her waking up in his royal palace:
Tumblr media
We see him wake up in her bed in her home:
Tumblr media
We see her after he put her in bed and is about to join (so we just missed the window to see them sleep together):
Tumblr media
And then we have him leaving while she's sad that he's not in bed with her:
Tumblr media
The closest we got was this (Thank you Sir Branagh):

LCU (Loki Cinematic Universe) Rewatch Part Three here we come!
Thor: the Dark World
Oh Gods I forgot how…indescribable this movie is. I have no words. The outfits and settings look so real and the elves look so fake?
Me every time I see Loki: oOmMgGg Hiiiiiiiiiii 😘
“Mother did I make you proud?” And the whole way he handles this scene…How did anyone ever take him seriously - no wonder he went off the rails, that’s his greatest fear
“Do you not feel the gravity of your crimes” ok this is pure speculation but going off of what we know about Loki’s moral and emotional system - he’s capable of remorse and empathy, but he tends to compartmentalize and bury guilt and shame, repress and conceal his true feelings, and rationalize, minimize and justify his actions instead of accepting what he sees as weakness, so yes, I’d imagine that deep down he absolutely fucking feels it. And it don’t feel good.
Loki justifies his imperialism genocide and violence in an imperial genocidal militaristic society but the second he becomes king he decreases military intervention something something (one of the good bits of Ragnarok)
“I don’t enjoy hurting people” But Odin does. And so Loki pretends to.
BOOOOOO Odin no one likes you BOOOOOOO SCREW YOU
oMggg Sif hiiiiiii. Look at her, Thor. LOOK at her! With your eyes! She prettyyyyy
Odin and Thor: talking about Thor’s love life. Loki probably: rocking back in forth in his cell because no one’s ever gonna love him. Another Loki at the same time: chasing his soulmate across spacetime because she pulled a Loki on him and he finds that endearing
The sets and ambiance of Asgard are gorgeous how do I move there
Yet another obscure character I don’t remember, Darcy’s in the comics now I’m so proud, Selvig’s lost his last marble, so have I Selvig, so have I
The weird gravity/time space anomaly/warp thing in that abandoned building actually makes for a fun scene. You cannot change my mind on this. The Aether is pretty creepy though ngl.
Thor and Jane are so cringe together. I love them. They also break my heart
The plot of this movie is really…something
Loki and Frigga’s bond actually makes me teary I know they didn’t have the best relationship it was strained and toxic at times but omg they care about eachother so much I’m getting emotional…she genuinely was the only person Loki truly loved in a healthy way. And he fucking lost her. FUCK
Cut to me relating to Loki so much it makes me physically recoil. I’d get into why but I’m not trauma dumping today.
“I don’t know why Loki helped the dark elf get into the palace”…lol stop lying to yourself you know the reason very well. You have the same resentment and lust for chaos inside you that Loki does…that desperate grief that makes you want to burn down the world that burned you. you know. I see my worst in Loki, and his story gives me hope that I can change. There’s a good chance I will die young (medical shit) and Loki dying young also gives me comfort.
This movie is peak Loki. I just fucking adore the little shit. I just aahfhkjkmng *aggressively squeezes*
Heimdall is underrated
Someone on discord said Frigga autocorrected to Fridged on their phone and Frigga’s dying and that’s all I can think about rip…bruh this scene hits a lot harder after my dad’s death ✌️
HE WASNT EVEN ALLOWED AT HER FUCKING FUNERAL FUCK YOU ODIN DRINK BLEACH!!!!Anyways I forgot how cinematic and heartbreakingly beautiful the funeral was
YOU CAN SEE THE SPARK LEAVE HIS FUCKING EYES IM GONNA FIGHT ODIN IN A DENNYS PARKING LOT. I’m ending on the Loki illusion scene for tonight because it’s 3 am and I’m in emotional distress.
How can anyone watch the illusion scene and the deleted bits and actually believe Loki is a cold hearted psychopath? I have this fucked up headcanon that Loki almost attempted suicide after Frigga’s death and either stopped himself…or Thor showed up right on time. I can’t prove it but I know it’s true by gut instinct.
There’s something so weirdly profound about someone who seeks out death being unkillable. Character who thinks he represents death actually represents life. That’s something the Loki series actually did well. They definitely screwed up his character in places, but I can see the backbone of what they intended. I don’t know how to explain this, but I don’t ship Sylvie with TVA Loki, I ship her with Pre-Ragnarok Loki. Aka, I characterize TVA Loki as closer to OG Loki than he is thus far.
There’s a tiny detail about Loki that makes me go feral. You have to psychoanalyze a little, but Loki doubts his brother even cares about him, so whenever Thor says he feels betrayed and threatens him, Loki smiles. It means Thor cared. It means there’s hope. Negative attention is better than none at all. Disappointment is better than apathy. I wish I didn’t know how he feels.

In the first Thor movie, Loki makes a comment about how he's upset that Thor seems to have changed as a result of his interaction with Jane Foster, and Loki suggests he should also pay a visit to her. Feminists have interpreted this as a rape threat--Loki as an aggressive man threatening sexual violence toward a woman as a means of attacking a rival man (in the game of patriarchy, women are the ball)--and describe feelings of revulsion surrounding Loki for this reason. The Loki fandom then feelings of terror for them, because people stan a rapist, and then Joss Whedon is brought into it as the guy who made the rapist cool. Can I just say, I think this is a misreading?
Tumblr media
Loki isn't particularly macho. He has a feminine side. If a Jotunn told him to "run home, little princess," he probably wouldn't take offense in quite the way Thor does. In the myths, he repeatedly crossdresses and transforms into female beings of various species, as is alluded to in a deleted scene where Thor calls him "cow" like that one time Loki became a cow, and then Thor: The Dark World alludes to a myth where Loki had the two of them dress up as women by making Thor look like Sif. He's a subtextually queer element ultimately made explicit in the Loki TV series when he describes himself as bisexual, an official dossier notes him as genderfluid, and an alternate universe's Loki transitions to female and takes the name Sylvie. All that is present in the background of Thor through Tom Hiddleston's expressive acting showing Loki's vulnerability and apparent attraction to Thor. (I don't care if it squicks you or not. I think that's in the film as a background element. Besides, he's adopted.)
Tumblr media
Loki is a king who subjugates people. In the case of the movie, he is the acting king of Asgard after Odin decided to go into a coma to avoid an awkward conversation that was making him feel emotions. Despite the movie telegraphing that Loki was trying to betray Odin, this was a red herring to hide the fact that Loki was manipulating events to make him look like a big hero protecting Asgard to get daddy's love. He's not particularly nice, but he's not the archetypal "strong man, grr!" figure that some feminists seem to think he is. When he makes his so-called rape threat, he's literally crying because he feels betrayed by Thor aligning himself with Jane Foster over him, after Loki went to great effort to make the world (Odin, Thor, and Asgard in general) see him as Thor's equal. This isn't a "macho man clinging to toxic masculinity" situation.
In this vulnerable state, he suggests he visit her himself. I think this is a threat, not of rape, but of replacing Thor as her romantic partner. Loki feels disposable, so he's trying to make Thor also feel disposable. Before, Thor's value lay in being heir to the throne, so that's what Loki was envious of. Now, Thor values being Jane's boyfriend and champion of humanity, so Loki's envy switched targets. It's worth noting that in the myth, it's indicated that Loki does sleep with Thor's wife, Sif, on one occasion, which allows Loki to bring it up as a boast in an insult-trading session. (The Loki TV series later canonized this with Loki sleeping with Sif before betraying her by cutting off her hair, but Sif was not actually married to Thor in this retelling.) The original Thor film has a smattering of allusions to myth, so it's reasonable to speculate they may have been setting up Loki trying to cuck Thor in the sequel.
It's worth noting that, though she didn't get a credit, Guardians of the Galaxy screenwriter Nicole Pearlman was a writer on Thor. Most of the Jane Foster content is the result of her contributions, giving the film a feminine feel. A significant amount of the film is for women, giving the female audience a romcom with a love interest who starts out arrogant and learns to be respectful. Thor is in parallel with Mr. Darcy, the arrogant rich man who learns to be nice through his love for the female protagonist, in Pride and Prejudice. I can see her working with the other writers to set up a love triangle with Loki as George Wickham, the roguish bad boy treated badly by Mr. Darcy, with whom he frequently quarrels. I personally suspect the writers' vision for the second Thor film would have been interplanetary Pride and Prejudice, if things hadn't been derailed by Joss Whedon taking over as writer/director of The Avengers and rewriting everything.
In the sequel hook that ended up being retconned away, Loki is shown puppetting Dr. Selvig, controlling his mind while invisibly shadowing him. Loki leads him to work with SHIELD in examinations of the Tesseract as an Asgardian artifact. Another plot thread set up and later abandoned is that Jane will find Thor now that he destroyed the Bifrost. Presumably, the notes he left her would help her construct a new wormhole. This would logically be connected to her roommate and colleague, Dr. Selvig, being part of the SHIELD investigation of the Tesseract: shown to have powers similar to the Bifrost in beaming Red Skull to another planet. That means Loki would play a key role in its construction. Following his threat to Thor, I think he would have been the Jacob to his Edward and been an alternate Asgardian love interest to create a love triangle. (The Hulk rampaging would also probably be the instigating event of the plot, based on setup in The Incredible Hulk, and Red Skull might have turned up on the first planet the new Bifrost took them to.)
Anyway, that's what I think was going on. Not an evil rape threat, but a sympathetic self-hating tragic figure lashing out at his brother/crush (he's adopted) with a threat of replacing him as love interest in the setup for a Pride and Prejudice retelling targeted at the female demographic. No need to write diatribes on Loki being misogynistic. (Honestly, I wonder how many of those feminists ended up being offended by Sylvie as a trans character, seeing as many of the feminists paranoid about rape threats are radfems/TERFs and not worth listening to anyway.)
