Hi!  I'm not sure how much help I'm going to be because my view of the sequel trilogy lives in kind of a nebulous space, where I really like the characters and I actually like a lot of the potential of the storyline, but I dislike TFA, greatly dislike TLJ, and was actually pretty okay with TROS all things considered. I don't want to dig too deep into the negativity of my feelings but they're basically - TFA was too much of a repainting of ANH for me, the initial shine of it was through its potential, but when that didn't pay off in the other movies, the shine came off TFA, too. - TLJ was set too close to TFA, Finn's character should have been tied into the Canto Bight plot (which was exhausting as it was), as a stolen child soldier he has the most reason to hate the rich, but absolutely nothing was done with him, Luke being on that island for that long was out of character for him, Rey's entire story became wrapped up in Kylo Ren, neither of those characters had nearly enough connections with others despite having very good reasons to, like why do we not spend more time on Luke & Kylo?? and it played at being subversive but it absolutely was not, it's all been done before (and I really hated the way Force abilities worked in the movie) and killing off your main villain in the second act was a baffling decision - TROS' biggest problem is that it should have been two movies instead of one, it was a series of trailers rather than a story with breathing room, and it suffered the most from the lack of planning + the main villain being killed off in the second movie But here's why I still like The Rise of Skywalker the best:  The bones of what's there are a pretty good Star Wars story!  Yes, Rey Palpatine came out of nowhere and was very silly, but if you can't handle silly, I don't know how you can make it as a Star Wars fan, it's such a silly franchise! I'm not afraid to love a scene I laugh out loud at--and, yeah, I laughed RIGHT OUT LOUD the first time Kylo dramatically said, "You're a Palpatine."  I laughed so hard I had tears in my eyes and let me tell you, I fucking LOVE that scene now. Or how the last words of any Skywalker, the last word Ben Solo/Kylo Ren ever says in the movies' franchise is, "Ow."  I am laughing RIGHT NOW, please, p l e a s e, that is so on-brand, I can't handle it, it's too funny. But I also like the basic storyline because Rey's story in TROS is her struggling with her own inner darkness, that she feels there's something dark in her soul because she's Palpatine's granddaughter.  The movie isn't saying that's true, but that Rey struggles with thinking it's true, and she has to wrestle with her dark side, just like every Jedi before her has as they're coming into their power. Anakin wrestled with his dark side and lost in Attack of the Clones and even worse in Revenge of the Sith. Luke wrestled with his dark side in the vision he sees of himself in Vader's helmet in the cave in ESB and in the climactic scene of ROTJ, where he nearly hacks his father's arm off in rage after his sister and friends are threatened.  He has to claw his way back out of that. Ezra Bridger struggles with the dark side in Rebels as he comes into his power and he has to claw his way out of it as well. Rey has to struggle with her own lure towards the dark side as she comes into her power--she rips a ship apart in the sky because she was so determined that Chewie was hers, she was so angry at Kylo that Force lightning burst out of her.  She's seeing Sith visions of herself on the wreckage of the Death Star.  This is a theme that has been there since the very beginning, that Jedi have to struggle through a temptation to the dark, and her relation to Palpatine preys on that. That's kind of why I wound up loving Ben's scene with Han as well, because that was an entirely imagined scene, but it represents that the way the Force works, you have to dig yourself out of the hole you're in, that Ben using the memory of his father, the last moments of connection he had with his mother, to pull himself out of the dark, really worked for me.  And I'm okay with his death, because this is Star Wars, people die before they should all the time. I even liked the political message of the final movie, yes, Rey vs Palpatine was the big Jedi vs Sith showdown, but the main galactic battle?  Had people showing up.  Just... people.  One of the themes I've talked a lot about, especially because The Clone Wars kind of has it as a running theme is that the average galactic citizen doesn't do jack shit about the state of the galaxy they live in.  The Rebellion had people starting to stand up, but it was an organized effort, it recruited people. TROS had just people showing up, that Leia and the Resistance had been trying to rally the cause, but ultimately it was the galactic public finally, finally saying, "We have to stand up and fight for ourselves, not depend on other people to do it."  Was it ham-fisted and not nearly as polished as it should have been?  Oh, no doubt.  But the message.  Just people showing up to fight against the First Order that was trying to bring back the Empire.  That meant a lot to me. And I loved Luke's character here, that he admitted when he was wrong, and gave us that banger line that's spot on:  "Confronting fear is the destiny of a Jedi."  Yes.  Yes.  FUCKING YES.  LUKE SKYWALKER AND JEDI PHILOSOPHY.  MY HEART.  Nailed it. Does this movie hang together as well as it should?  Absolutely not.  It needed a stronger writer, it needed more time than it got, and it needed better build-up.  But the bones of what was there were actually pretty good and, man, any movie that has Daisy Ridley in that white outfit with the hood where she looked practically ethereal cannot be all bad, in my opinion.

The fact that he still dreamt of the fire and brimstone was his greatest kept secret. Behind his closed eyelids he still saw it, lightening striking and ash fluttering to the ground like unnatural snowfall, marking destruction and filling his lungs with something disgusting. His anger had soared to new heights that night as his bitterness left him empty, choking on a feeling of what he could only describe to be abandonment and betrayal. He did not know which was more haunting, the screams of those he grew up with, or the look on his uncle’s face as he raised his weapon to him.
The night Luke Skywalker’s Jedi Academy burned to the ground was the very last Ben Solo was alive, and what remained of it all now was an ugly wound across his very soul. Like something created by a saber, it became cauterized by the heat, a gaping hole which refused to heal as vital organs were scorched in its path. A bacta tank could do nothing to save him from his past.
Under his new name and allegiance, he channeled this very reoccurring nightmare into a powerful weapon against those who had wronged him. Drowning within the pain rather than attempting to swim was how Kylo Ren operated, and he could see no ability to heal as he allowed himself to be pulled under. Under the First Order, he would learn to reopen this gash over and over again, twisting the knife deeper into himself whenever he got the chance. Where Ben Solo once felt hope and aspiration, Kylo Ren felt a melancholy sense of intense loathing. In a way mostly unclear to him, his anger was a method of mourning, manifesting further as he watched the newest Rebel fighter receive what love and autonomy he was denied. They gave to Rey endlessly.
Kylo Ren knew he was the product of familial failure, and that voice inside of his head telling him to look towards the facts isolated him greatly from others in his youth. The galactic heroes of the century he called his guardians, the legends turned bedtime stories for new generations born, all left him to rot in their own ways. He knew he was a monster created by their faults, and they were all to blame for his very fall from “grace”, or that set path they assigned to him. Growing up, if he had told another soul that their dearest Han, Luke and Leia were far from perfect poster figures, he’d only have been named a liar. A spoiled brat complaining about what gifts the universe had bestowed upon them, his heritage a huge leverage in both training, politics and more. Listening to that small familiar whisper in his ear, the seeds of truth finally flourished under the green light of his uncle’s lightsaber hovering directly above him.
To start, if thinking of them all again, he hated the man he called father, Han Solo. In his selfishness, that bastard craved his old life of crime and could not stay grounded. He found smuggling alongside that Wookiee to be more entertaining than his family, and at the end of the day still had very little in common with his mother besides the fact that they had a kid together. Han Solo would have rather been footloose and fancy free, head in the stars above than to have played the role of husband and father. Growing up, Ben felt it all, his mind nagging him that this disconnection was in fact his reality. He hated his true name now, Solo not even being a real surname. His father never really wanted more than a fling with some pretty princess…and yet this new girl was already so snug under his wing like a kid of his own maybe. Perhaps it’s because he chases the rush of new people excited to know him as an old hero of theirs.
Then there was his mother, one of the most important political figure heads of the century. Not only was she famed for being spectacularly beautiful, but strong willed and strong minded in her fight against the empire. She was the number one thing that swayed his usage of the dark side, and he was aware of what he’d have to do in order to fix that. Sever the ties…and to think no more of her soft hands against his cheeks as she sang him to sleep as a child. She already started their separation all those years ago shipping him off to become a Jedi, without being granted the same choice she had to follow something else instead…love in order to have him. His loud inner dialogue thundered at the thought of her, sorting her out to be indeed a hypocrite. While he practiced so very far from his mother, alone and missing her, Rey received training directly from her.
And as for his uncle Luke? He made up his mind about Ben all too quickly, deciding to kill his nephew placed into his care. He had casted the scales of judgment upon him without holding a call to court, and Kylo Ren hated him most of all, for judging his pull to the dark when Luke lived with the same. In fact, Luke spared Rey when experiencing hers.
And yet…even with this map sprawled out before him, he cannot find it within himself to hate the girl they dote on. All of the rage he directs through his power cannot be channeled at her, and it’s yet another thing that makes him weaker. Kylo Ren supposes he takes pity on Rey, being a small desert planet orphan longing to hold the stars that kept her company in her lonesomeness. In time, her heroes will fail her same as they did him. He will be there when it happens, waiting.

Tag Game!!!
Thank you for the tag @luthien-under-bough!!! Same TV show 👯 Starting a new thread here cause it was getting long.
Fave color: All the colors! But especially teal, orange, purple.
Currently reading: A bunch of Frozen fanfic mostly. I am reading An Unexpected Meeting by @keeshya6 (a Mandalorian x reader fic) and True Hans Soul Rebel by @rebamacncheese and the other stories in that universe (a trans Hans/Elsa fic). Like every writer will tell you, I need to read more.
Last song: "Get This Right," the outtake from Frozen 2 performed by the inimitable Jonathan Groff.
Last series: I'm working my way through Arrested Development and What We Do in the Shadows. But just saw the first episode of Stranger Things this evening and I'm looking forward to more - no spoilies!
Last movie: Downton Abbey: A New Era. Laughing through my tears... Dame Maggie Smith is a treasure.
Sweet/Spicy/Savory:  Sweet, sweet, sweet. Do you know that feeling where your cheeks feel too much sugar? I have never experienced this feeling.
Currently working on: Yikes! How much time do you have? But really, I am working on a story in honor of the Great Queen Anna's birthday, and something top secret for my first multi-fandom exchange that's from an out of left field fandom, but one I really like. I'm also trying to finish The Refugees. And I'm starting to think ahead to the Kristanna Halloween Days event!!! So excited!

It’s 25th already in my place.
Marry Christmas, @rebamacncheese I am your Helsa-Secret Santa :) in @helsadiscord
Based on Alexander McQueen Fall 2016 Ready-To-Wear Collections. Look 17 for Marie/Hans and Look 39 for Elsa.
Why i choose this?
Because as Sarah Burton said for this colection, ‘she described her woman as: “Almost sleepwalking, in a state where reality and dreams become blurred.” Toward the end, this imagined character had become an almost incorporeal sylph, like a vision from an Erté drawing, trailing a silver-sprinkled cloak embroidered with stardust and the phases of the moon.’
I think, those fits with how you describe Marie/Hans and Elsa in your headcanon. I hope this gift as what your expectation. :)

Loved what you did with my dragon prompt. I was wondering if you’d up something a bit more tragedic. Prompt: Little Mermaid the Hans Christian Andersen version not Disney with Marinette as the mermaid and Adrian as the Prince.
Little Lady
This is a draft. And it’s more of a twist in the tale.
Marinette was the youngest granddaughter of the Merking. She has six older sisters who told her what they saw when they broke the surface of the waves.
Alix: I saw a ship holding ambassadors and a little human girl with a furry little pet. It had long, floppy ears.
Juleka: I saw a pink sunset reflected on the waters.
Rose: I saw the dolphins breaching the waves
Mylène: i saw seagulls
Aurore: i saw lightning and rain.
Alya: I saw a ship holding some ladies gossiping. I can repeat it if you want.
Marinette hoped to see something new.
And she did, just not at first.
Marinette saw a ship where a blond lady was insulting a brown-haired lady. And then she saw lightning and rain. Nothing new yet.
But oh. The ship is on fire! The ladies pretty much trampled others as they fought to the smaller boats.
Only one didn’t make it. The prince was struggling with his cat. Apparently the Kitty didn’t like water. Anyway the boat sank and its sinking force pulled the prince and cat with them.
Marinette dove to save cat and boy.
When she neared shore, she heard the prince call for his cat. Marinette’s heart melted at his care for other creatures.
But then she heard the sound of footprints and dove back to the ocean, after resting the prince against a rock.
Lady Kagami was looking for survivors of the shipwreck and saw the prince and cat on the rock. She dove in and pulled them to shore.
When the prince awoke, he was thrilled he had been saved by his crush.
Marinette had not been present to witness this. All she wanted was a chance to pursue her new crush. Was life underwater really so annoying that she would throw it all away for a guy she just met?
Yes. Her grandfather is super traditional and strict. Plus, he just wasn’t into parties or meeting new people. “Humans and Merpeople together? That just isn’t done.”
Marinette visited two magic fish Yin and Yang and asked for their help.
Tumblr media
They could give her legs for a price. Her magical voice that could summon random objects.
Done. Her power was kind of pointless anyway.
Marinette came on shore and was brought to the castle by the prince. Since she could not and would not tell them of her origins, they asked if she wanted to stay on as a maid. She agreed. It would allow her to stay close to her prince.
But to her horror, she was asked to help prepare for a wedding.
Sad that Marinette lost her home and voice for nothing, she went to the beach to stare longingly at the home she can no longer return to. Imagine her surprise when her sisters show up, having waited for her to come back.
And why were they bald?
Sisters: we wanted the fish to undo the trade. Hair loss is a small price to pay when we have wigs and our hair can grow back.
Marinette was touched by their love. But she pleaded for the chance to say goodbye to her human friends.
She bid farewell to the castle inhabitants who had treated her with kindness. By now she had learned sign language.
But the court musician Luka realized she was leaving for good and asked if she would not stay with him.
Luka: I know a mermaid when I see one. Your songs are a lot more...haunting.
Marinette had 3 different reactions in rapid succession: surprise, alarm, offense
Luka: sorry, I speak best through music.
The handsome stranger let out a heartbreaking tune of loss and despair, kind of matching Marinette’s mood.
The song was so beautiful but it was the allure that told Marinette who the stranger was.
Marinette: you’re a siren.
Luka nodded. “My name’s Luka. And you’re half right. My mother is a pirate.”
Marinette: and what’s all this about staying with you?
Luka blushed. “I told you I was bad with words. I meant, instead of returning to the sea. Why don’t you explore the world with my mother and me? I can tell your heart wants freedom.”
It was true. Marinette thought she had two choices before her. Stay on this new land and be hesrtbroken, or return home the princess of a strict kingdom. But now she has a third choice.
Marinette: why should I trust you?
Luka: um, because I could have used my voice to compel you to follow me?
He blinked. “I really should just stop talking.”
Marinette: i gave up my voice and power for love, but I don’t mind this sacrifice for adventure. There is more than one way to express my thoughts.
Luka smiled. “Then I welcome you aboard the Liberty.”
Marinette: we haven’t even boarded anything yet.
Luka: that’s it. I’m shutting up now.
Marinette bid farewell to her disbelieving sisters, apologizing for leaving her family, but she just has to get away. She loves her family, but she cannot always stay there.
Alya: that’s really selfish of you (this was not accusing. She was just really stunned because this is Marinette and she hardly rebels)
Mylène: isn’t it great? This is the first selfish thing she’s done for herself
Alix: besides that whole trade her voice for legs deal?
Rose: be free, Marinette!
Juleka: I know Luka. He’s a good soul.
Aurore: fair winds, sister.
Alya: send us a bottled letter of your adventures or I won’t ever forgive you 😜
Marinette promised then she would. She took a step aboard the liberty with her new friends, heartbroken, but healing.

TROS fix-it: Page 14
“[...] “Wait,” Ben hissed and outstretched his hand as much as the pain let him to. Rey kept him steady so he wouldn’t collapse, but could not figure out what he was up to until she heard a low metallic rumble in the distance. The rumble became louder as the object came closer. It left the ground for Ben demanded it into his hand. He was holding a blaster.
“You’re not gonna need that,” was Rey’s first reaction at the sight of the weapon. There was something oddly familiar about the blaster. Tt wasn’t First Order craft. It was from the days of the Rebels, looking quite similar to Han’s blaster, if she remembered it right. When, where and how he got it was still a question to her.
“I know. I just made a promise to someone a long time ago,” Ben emphasised. Rey looked at him in astonishment. He had started to open up to her, his true self shining through his once concealed soul. Ben didn’t have to explain his words. For some reason Rey had a feeling that she would find out soon enough who he was talking about. Noticing her gaze on him Ben looked back to Rey, almost afraid of her reaction, afraid of what Rey would think of him. He felt unsure of himself, not knowing how to behave. To his relief though, Rey was smiling, her brown eyes filled with joy and acknowledgement, accepting him for who he truly was. A long journey awaited them. It goes without saying that this journey would be difficult. Yet, Rey knew it was worth the effort. [...]”

Do you have any Star Wars fanfic recommendations, or have a link to someone else's list? I really wanna veg out.
oh my god, DO I. this may have been the best ask in the world. i’m not really sure what u want a feel for, so i threw together some of my favorite longfics for maximum veg time from the ot/pt and links for swr and swtcw recs. they’re pretty much all luke-anakin/vader centric, since that’s kinda my bread and butter.
let’s start with frodogenic, who wrote the first longfic i ever read in sw and might be one of the funniest authors ever. they once reviewed my fanfic & i nearly cried from joy. anyway.
The Father, 284k+, complete. “Ten years after ROTS, tormenting nightmares of his unborn child drive Darth Vader to extraordinary measures with unexpectedly drastic consequences. Clearly, experience has taught Darth Vader nothing...”
this is my og star wars fic and boy oh boy is it amazing. i will never get over this. i don’t want to spoil anything but when i say the final chapters are great? i mean they’re legendary. sometimes i still think about them & wish upon a star that i could be such a great writer. vader’s amazing, han is spectacular, and the ocs are fantastic.
Far More Than Rubies, 70k+, complete. “Nine years after AOTC, tragedy revisits the Lars Homestead. Little Luke Skywalker is suddenly plunged into chaos as the rebel movements discover a secret military project that may make a crucial difference in the war with the Empire.”
the spiritual twin of The Father, FMTR takes a look at padmé’s character and relationship with both luke and anakin/vader that’s hard to beat. it’s darker and heavier than The Father, but it hits those same sweet, sweet emotional beats while raising the age-old question: if padmé had lived, what would she have done?
The Family Tree, 12k, complete. “In which Luke Skywalker is stranded in a tree waiting for a flash flood to recede. Too bad he's got company...”
okay, i admit, this isn’t a longfic, but it is a longshot, and it’s amazing. the imagery and description always blow me away, and the interaction (canon-compliant) between luke and vader just [chef’s kiss] get me. vader’s in full, glorious form, and it makes it all the harder when luke wrestles with the knowledge that vader is his father.
Sibling Revelry, 25k, complete. “After Bespin and before Endor, Darth Vader is shocked to discover that Luke and Leia are twins. He's even more shocked when Imperial Intelligence reports that Organa and Skywalker are, erm, a tad closer than previously suspected.”
this is complete crack and humor in the best way possible. it’s crack treated entirely seriously, and you will be in stitches, i promise. no matter how many times i’ve read this i break down.
KittandChips (@kittandchips) writes what i can only describe as food for the soul. the luke-vader interaction is insanely amazing, the world building of daily imperial life and imperial governance is amazing, and vader just has a special je ne sais quoi that u must read to understand––tragic, funny, and so, so fatherly. they’re currently rewriting the Force Bond Series to fit in with newer canon, so i will joyously binge reread the entire again (including the new Force Bond: Mustafar Weekend).
Force Bond 1: Orphan, 47k, complete. “After Owen and Beru are killed by a mysterious stranger, young Luke ends up as an orphan on Coruscant. It's a race against time as Obi-Wan struggles to find Luke before Vader realizes the boy is his son.”
Orphan kicks off the series, which tracks vader and luke’s relationship through the perils of luke’s teenagerhood while growing up under the eye of the emperor and imperial court. it’s filled with slow growth, struggle and misunderstandings as darth vader tries to single parent, and pay off in every installment. the entire series clocks in around 777k+ and is the most joyful, fulfilling reading you’ll ever have. promise.
darth-nickels (@darth--nickels) writes darker, twistier, and terribly, terribly heartwrenching aus. they’ve got a whole host, but let me introduce to my two favorites. also, check out their faux-academia on vader. it’s amazing and i love it, but i admit i am an academia hoe.
Dooku Captured, Pt 2, 16k, complete. “Dooku is taken alive onboard the Invisible Hand, and Sidious' web is torn. The Sith Lord wonders if death might have been preferable to clumsy interrogation by Anakin Skywalker.”
Dooku Captured is a longshot au told from Dooku’s pov which takes the beginning of ROTS and throws it on its head. it’s a fascinating outside perspective of anakin and obi-wan’s relationship and such and interesting examination of dooku’s psyche and especially his complex relationship with the jedi order, qui-gon, yoda, and palpatine. i cannot rec this one enough.
Black Mirror, 90k, incomplete. “The Ghost crew returns to the Lothal when they hear the Empire is investigating the Jedi Temple there. They learn Vader is alone and decide to take him out-- but what they find could change the course of Galactic history.”
Black Mirror diverges into swr territory, but make no mistake: this is entirely an examination of vader and, later, obi-wan as well as ahsoka. luke makes his appearance later in the game, and boy oh boy will you love luke’s portrayal is a microcosm of luke and vader’s relationship within canon. heed the tags, though.
jerseydevious ( @jerseydevious ) is, first and foremost, one of my favorite people on earth. secondly, though, she’s an amazing writer with a deep understanding of vader’s character and psyche, a flair for beautiful depictions, and the true ability to wring every emotion out of your body.
Two and a Half Men (with a baby), 13k, incomplete. “After a long day of bargaining with Hutts and attempting to ignore his past, Darth Vader is nearing the end of his rope. When he discovers his two-year-old son, it's the straw that breaks the semi-rational Sith Lord's back; in a rash act worthy of the Skywalker name, he scoops his son into his arms, steals a shuttle from his own fleet, and punches in random hyperspace coordinates to a destination on the other side of the galaxy. Unfortunately, father and son are not the only ones on the ship.”
Two and a Half Men will stick with you, dude. like no other. i promise. it’s a whirlwind ride with obi-wan, vader, and piett and as funny as it is heartbreaking. it touches on some heavy issues and doesn’t shy away from looking at the damage done to vader––again, heed the tags.
Helioseismology, 4k, complete. “Luke gets shot down on a supply run and caught in an ice storm. It's extremely lucky that his father followed him there.“
i’ll admit. im completely biased about this one because it was a birthday gift to me and i am sucker for litcherally anything when jd puts pen to paper, but believe me when i say you will be awed by the depth and tangled relationships between these luke and vader that jersey can illustrate in a stroke of the paintbrush. im love. always.
izzythehutt ( @izzythehutt ) i am blown away by the intricate dialogue and characterization, always. and the latin puns? im sold. im also a sucker for latin puns, but that’s a story for a different time.
In Loco Pirates, 34k, complete. “A down-on-his-luck Hondo Ohnaka manages to capture the unicorn of all bounties--Luke Skywalker, which sends Darth Vader, Lord of the Sith, on a painfully familiar trip to the planet Florrum to collect his prize. The failed negotiations leave Vader in the awkward position of being stuck in a besieged pirate bunker, trying to balance keeping his wayward child safe (and in his custody) with controlling the tongue of a loose-lipped pirate who--to the surprise of no one--has a bad habit of telling 'amusing' anecdotes from the Clone Wars.”
hondo, aka the best character of swtcw, is brought to life just as vividly on paper as on screen. his entire personality brings luke and vader’s difficulties in a sort of incredulous light, which makes it as funny as it is vulnerable and tragic. the sequel, Palpatine Ad Portas, brings piett into the spotlight, and oh man do his interactions with palpatine and vader bring u all the uncomfortable vibes. relish in it.
sparklight ( @littlesparklight ) man. lemme introduce u to an amazing prolific and detailed writer. i will never get over the series they’ve written & neither will u.
Where Our Intrepid Hero Doesn’t Get Away, 122k, incomplete. “One-shots surrounding either AU situations of canon/legends works where Luke would normally have gotten away (or Vader is simply inserted into the action to come pick his child up) but in these instances doesn't, or completely new scenarios of the same. There are no deep ruminations on consequences of the situations here, just our awful Sith dad picking his son up when he'd rather not be.”
exactly what it says on the tin. u know those glorious moments of fanfic where luke’s gotten captured and ur on pins and needles, waiting for vader to show up in a moment of dark glory? here’s the moment. here’s all the moments.
Space Race, 122k, incomplete. “Owen gives in to Luke's wish to attend the Imperial Academy and Obi-Wan is too late to avert it, though he's not too late to make sure Luke leaves Arkanis before Vader can gets his hands on him. Luke spends over a month running around the galaxy before his father gets him, and from there...”
this story relishes in chase and boy is it fun. it will keep you on the edge of your seat and it’s an amazing ride.
The Suns of Tatooine, 85k, complete. “Luke ends up on a moon swamped in dark side energy after a mission goes wrong, then his father appears... and then they go on a bit of a learning experience. This could've been the only thing that would come of getting through a Sith complex with his father, but thanks to going to free Han earlier than the gang did otherwise, more revelations are had. Will that change anything?”
this series is a thoughtful, contemplative piece examining the nature of the force and the relationship the skywalkers have with tatooine. the descriptions are beautiful, the inventiveness is amazing, and you’ll be thinking about it for long afterwards.
an additional few…
Between Flight and Longing; 34k, complete. “Luke Skywalker and Han Solo journey to the planet Balen'ar on a desperate mission and find more than they'd bargained for.”
a classic and it is for a reason. the interaction between han, luke, and vader is so spectacular and the slow trudge of going through the forest with your greatest enemy and best friend is something hilarious. the end is bittersweet and fantastic.
The Sith Who Brought Life Day, 13k, complete. “An Imperial officer loses a bet and has to get Darth Vader a present for Life Day.”
somewhere between terrifying and dull, this fic presents a canon-compliant look at the hunt for luke and the grinding wheels of the empire. the oc is amazing and it echoes in true star wars spirit: sometimes it’s just some dude who can change the galaxy.
Quintessence, 5k, complete. ‘“Well, Master, I think I’ve found the one positive aspect of this situation.” “Which is?” “The Temple won’t have to pay the costs for our funeral pyres.”’
pure hilarity and shenanigans abound in pre-aotc obi-wan and anakin hijink goodness. lemme tell u––u will deeply sympathize with mace windu afterwards. additionally, check out the rest of the author’s oneshots! they’re deeply thoughtful and the interactions the author writes between obi-wan and anakin are always gold.
some extras & shameless self-promotion
here’s a full list of recommendations for star wars rebels fanfic in case this is what you’re looking for (remember when this used to be a swr blog, lmao)
i’ve also written sw fanfic, both swr and luke-vader centric. drop by and tell me if it’s any good!

Darth Vader A+ Parenting.
While Darth Vader in canon ain’t exactly the nicest fellow, this is a Vader or Anakin who has no qualms getting what he wants and using any methods to do so.
Or otherwise known as Darth Vader A+ Parenting.
1.  to gain a son Russy
After falling into a trap laid by the Empire and being captured by two Inquisitors, Luke Skywalker wakes up in an unfamiliar room with an unfamiliar man watching over him.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/25019218/chapters/60586045
2. No Time Like The Present PinkEasterEggs
In a Galaxy where Princess Leia Organa and Luke Vader have always known they were twins, a deadly discovery by their biggest enemy throws their entire lives upside down. Yet again.
Now on the run from the Empire, the Skywalker twins find it their mission to bring peace back to the Galaxy once more. And with Darth Vader on their trail, that mission is far more complicated than they originally believed.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/24754825/chapters/59851300
(Note* Part  3 of the  Back To The Future series. Can be read as standalone)
  3.  The Heir - SpellCleaver
Darth Vader just killed his master and learned a galaxy-changing truth: the child Palpatine adopted, the Imperial prince and heir, is actually Vader’s son, raised by Palpatine to torment him.
Meanwhile, Luke Palpatine just woke up from severe injuries he sustained in a Rebel attack to a galaxy where his father is dead, he is the Emperor, and the figure from all his childhood nightmares is acting suspiciously nice.
They figure it out from there.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/24024442/chapters/57801529
4. Eclipse - SpellCleaver
Luke and Leia, the twin children of Darth Vader and heirs to the Emperor himself, defect. When they do, it's naturally a dream come true for the Rebellion and the mother they never knew, one that's been a long time in the making.
But they have to get to that point first.
Or: Darth Vader unwittingly sends his children down the merry path of treason... and the ugly, painful fallout.
(Note* Obviously)
https://archiveofourown.org/works/18221840/chapters/43109123
5. Walking the Line Between - aradian_nights
After an emotional confrontation on Bespin, Luke Organa has been captured, and his newfound twin Leia Skywalker will not stop until she has rescued him. Even if that means murdering their own father.
( How the Other Half Lives  -   aradian_nights)
(Note* the entire series is this but more in particular the recent additions, I’ve already discussed this story multiple times before so you know the drill )
6.  The kidnappings of a Sith Lord - maedre13
How a certain Sith Lord may or may not kidnap his rebel son. One-shots. Strongly inspired by sparklight´s “Where Our Intrepid Hero Doesn´t Get Away”.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/10606992/chapters/23453241
(Note* not all these chapters are Vader at his worst but he isn’t exactly a top notch parent in them either)
7. How to Save the World from its Heroes - stardustgirl
Being the Avatar’s—and Fire Lord’s—non-bending heir isn’t what Luke signed up for. He also didn’t sign up for an Agni Kai he can’t possibly win, or for getting dragged into a search for someone who can kill his own dad. Then again, someone has to bring the world back into balance, and if his dad won’t, then Luke might as well give it his best shot. After all, how much worse can things get?
https://archiveofourown.org/works/24948487/chapters/60386875
(Note* Only started and already you can see Vader A+ Parenting in all its glory)
8. your heart is full of stars and your hands full of shattered glass -victoriousscarf
Nineteen years ago, Vader took his children off Mustafar, and Palpatine raised them to be Sith, the perfect weapons he had been looking for.
Except the very eve of his greatest victory, the fully functional Death Star, Luke Skywalker defects to the floundering but growing Rebel Alliance. His sister follows because someone needs to watch out for that fool.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/13242183/chapters/30290415
9.  Love of a daughter. - youngjusticewriter
"and yet, so far at least we have yet to figure out what you gain from this." It's a question as well as statement. A chance to explain, to come clean on why she - a unknown Sith- had assassinated they're precious, beloved Chancellor (what fools). But how could you come clean when there is so much blood on her hands? Never-mind the sins and blood on Vader and Luke's when her family had been alive.
When she answers it's not because she's announcing her transgressions in hope that her heavy, dirty soul might be saved. One couldn't repent when they didn't feel guilt in their sin.
"For the love of a daughter." Leia pauses and looks back at Anakin and thinks: I did this to avenge you. After thinking that Leia says one more thing - the last thing actually because she nothing else to say after this.
"And you should have been more careful electing your Chancellor. You never know who is Sith." This has double meaning but she's the only person who knows it.
And she's fine with that (no, she isn't).
Leia wonders if her younger self and Luke will ever become the monsters like her Luke had been and the monster she is.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/10924239/chapters/24297558
10.  Literal Hell - TreeOfTime
Luke Lars is content as a Moisture Farmer with his father and mother... until two people come to find what was lost to them...
Then all hell broke lose
https://archiveofourown.org/works/22579066/chapters/53957833
(Note* oh dear lord Vader A+ Parenting in its full glory, a Sith Leia for flavour and a non force sensitive Luke. )
11.  Dynasty - Valerie_Vancollie: Co-authored by Rebecca Thomson aka Zekkers.
Hit in the leg by a stormtrooper's blaster bolt, Luke falls in the Death Star hanger bay and is unable to escape on the Falcon along with Han and Leia. During the subsequent interrogation, his true heritage is revealed and Vader instantly takes him to Coruscant, determined to reclaim the son the Jedi stole from him. But the glory of the Imperial capital belies its true nature, where politics and power are everything and anything is fair game in the never ending game to reach the top. Not lying, not betrayal, assassination, sabotage, blackmail, nor seduction. As he commences his Sith training, Luke must also learn the rules and etiquette of the Imperial Court if he is to survive as most of his enemies fight their battles with words and political maneuverings rather than military force. Yet, even as he struggles to gain his place within the Empire, Luke learns that his best friend has joined the Alliance...
https://archiveofourown.org/works/13111908/chapters/29997507
12. Fractured twists - Annessarose
Timelines are fickle things.
Every line is balanced precariously on the precipice. One shift, one twitch of a finger, one step in the wrong direction, and entire stories change. Lives flicker out, galaxies rise and fall, but the Force is always a constant.
Each moment is carefully balanced. We know how the Siege of Mandalore happened - how the former Jedi padawan Ahsoka Tano led her men into victory. How she defeated Maul in single combat and earned the loyalty of Lady Bo-Katan Kyrze. How she rode her ship too late to meet with Anakin Skywalker, and how the galaxy fell and burned under the hand of the Sith.
This is the way it could have gone if Obi-Wan had followed Ahsoka to Mandalore.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/24158608
13. Runaway- Valerie_Vancollie
Co-authored by Rebecca Thomson aka Zekkers & a contest winner.
What if Luke had runaway from Tatooine and joined the Imperial Academy?
https://archiveofourown.org/works/12976095
14. A Mother's Decision - Valerie_Vancollie
What if Padmé had brought Luke to Vader when Luke was only nine months old?
https://archiveofourown.org/works/12915687
15. Descent into Darkness - Valerie_Vancollie
What if instead of waiting for Luke to come to him on Endor, Vader had gone for Luke and the others, capturing them while with the Ewoks?
https://archiveofourown.org/works/12908223
16. Avenge and Conquer - arikylo
The Alliance has fallen into a very well laid trap and now Luke has no choice but to hand himself over to Vader. But what does the father have in store for the son? Can Luke handle the torture and the ruthless tactics of the Empire or will he be forced to surrender and embrace the dark side?
The struggle between the light and the dark is strenuous, relationships crumble and all is looking bleak for the Alliance.
Dark!AU set after ESB.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/3058115/chapters/6639581
17. The Terrorist - Seasider
High above Bespin in Cloud City, Vader chooses not reveal his identity and instead uses deceit to trick Luke into surrendering. The Dark Lord has a lot on his agenda, so he entrusts the breaking of his son to an Imperial interrogator, unaware that the man has an agenda of his own: revenge.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/24810643/chapters/60006952
(Note* Dead Dove do not eat. Contains some reall fucked up shit)
18. Consequences - treenahasthaal
An intense burst of light and a vicious blow to his left shoulder sent him spinning violently backward and he fell...
What if Luke hadn't made it off the Death Star immediately following Kenobi's death?
https://archiveofourown.org/works/809144/chapters/1527145
(Note* It’s also a boba fett/ luke)
19. Instinct - treenahasthaal
There was something about the blond boy in the crowd of detainees that caught Commander Yarryn's attention. Something that pulled at his gut and told him there was more about this captive than met the eye. It was his duty to find out what it was the boy was hiding - and find it he would, for Yarryn was very good at his job.
12 weeks after the destruction of the Death Star.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/2185854/chapters/4785594
( Part 1 of the Invictus series)
20. Child of Mine - Oneshotshipper
AU. Darth Vader discovers Leia at a young age. Barely managing to escape her father's clutches the first time, young Leia goes into hiding and becomes the Empire's most-wanted fugitive. If the second time comes, fate will not be as kind. Meanwhile, Darth Vader would tear apart the galaxy itself to possess and keep his child. The Dark Side seems to inevitably be the fate of the Skywalkers.
21. To Catch a Daughter, One must... - ftbprotocol
A variety of AU one-shots where in canon Leia stayed a secret, but in these stories did not. Because there needs to be more Leia and Vader fic!
https://archiveofourown.org/works/12173637/chapters/27632673
22.  Daughter Over The Son - Keetajet
Work is inspired by ftbprotocol's work "To Catch a Daughter, One must..."
The moment where Darth Vader did not save his son. Instead, he will have his daughter.
Leia's future went downhill the moment she felt her brother die on the second Death Star, leading to their capture on Endor. Only she, Han, and Chewie survived the failed ground assault and they were restrained and being held at gun point.
She has a bad feeling about this.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/25354183/chapters/61476130
23. Before the Emperor - SilverDaye
Luke is defeated and captured at Cloud City by Vader. He is then dragged before the Emperor. However Palpatine is dead. Luke's father is alive. And someone else holds the reigns to Vader and the Empire.

While it will likely never happened. But because I was looking up Soul Calibur 4 on YouTube and I’m listening to an extended version of the menu theme right now. An extended version of it. Gonna reveal this, Soul Calibur 4 was my first PS3 game that I think I played maybe.
I just wanna make some intro quotes if Vader ever did guest star in a Mortal Kombat game. I’m just hoping I can keep him in character considering how the Star Wars universe is. The Scorpion ones are likely gonna be the best ones.
Darth Vader: You were a slave of Quan Chi?
Scorpion: I am no longer under his control.
Darth Vader: I envy you.
-
Darth Vader: Quan Chi reminds me of a friend of mine.
Scorpion: How would you describe your friend?
Darth Vader: More worse than Quan Chi can ever hope to be.
-
Darth Vader: Give into the dark side Hanzo Hasashi.
Scorpion: I am no longer bound by vengeance.
Darth Vader: You can’t resist.
-
Darth Vader: Be grateful it wasn’t you that killed your family
Scorpion: Why would you say such a thing?
Darth Vader: Because at least they weren’t killed by someone they loved.
-
Scorpion: The Empire will never take Earthrealm.
Darth Vader: Then you know nothing of the force.
Scorpion: Then show me so I can show you how meaningless it is.
-
Scorpion: My Hellfire will burn you alive.
Darth Vader: I don’t care, as I’ve suffered already.
Scorpion: Then I’ll make sure you won’t survive this burning.
-
Darth Vader: Sub Zero will betray one day...trust me.
Scorpion: Our truce is strong. You know nothing.
Darth Vader: Believe me. I do know what brotherhood was.
-
Darth Vader: Your brother betrayed you as well?
Sub Zero: Bi Han was corrupted, and not himself anymore.
Darth Vader: I’m sadly reminded of a scenario with someone.
-
Darth Vader: The Lin Kuei would be excellent help for the Empire.
Sub Zero: The Lin Kuei will never join your tyranny.
Darth Vader: Then you will die as I take over your clan.
-
Sub Zero: Your suit will freeze Vader.
Darth Vader: My lightsaber will go through your ice no matter what.
Sub Zero: You’re too confident in your skills.
-
Darth Vader: Did you ever see your mother again after you were taken?
Sub Zero: Sadly no, but why do you ask such a question?
Darth Vader: I’m just...reminded of something.
-
Darth Vader: You remind me of the Jedi.
Sub Zero: The ones you helped exterminated?
Darth Vader: And you shall join them.
-
Darth Vader: Join me Sub Zero, and I can teach you the dark side of the force.
Sub Zero: I will never join a tyrant like you.
Darth Vader: What a waste of skill.
-
Sub Zero: You do not dare besmirch Hanzo.
Darth Vader: Scorpion will betray you. Trust me, I know.
Sub Zero: Whatever happened to you, doesn’t excuse all you’ve done.
-
Darth Vader: There’s one thing the Elder Gods don’t fully understand Raiden.
Raiden: And what is Vader?
Darth Vader: The power of the force.
-
Darth Vader: Your power means nothing to me Raiden.
Raiden: You think you can survive against the god of thunder.
Darth Vader: Your powers are nothing compared to what I’ve suffered you waste of flesh.
-
Raiden: I know who you are Vader.
Darth Vader: You know nothing false god.
Raiden: Say that again Anakin Skywalker.
-
Darth Vader: So you’re a bounty hunter?
Erron Black: Yep, why you saying that.
Darth Vader: I’m just reminded of other bounty hunters I’ve met.
-
Darth Vader: The Empire can offer you a great reward for your services.
Erron Black: Then why are you challenging me?
Darth Vader: I want to see if you’re as great as the likes of Boba Fett and others.
-
Darth Vader: Another princess again.
Kitana: I am Kahn now Vader.
Darth Vader: I don’t care.
-
Darth Vader: The Empire will take Outworld.
Kitana: You can try Vader.
Darth Vader: You sound like princess Leia and her rebels.
-
Darth Vader: So you’re the chosen one in this universe?
Liu Kang: Why do you ask Vader?
Darth Vader: Be wary of the burdens that come with it.
-
Darth Vader: You don’t know the pain of what it be as the chosen one.
Liu Kang: What makes you an expert?
Darth Vader: I knew a man who fell and hates himself for his downfall.
-
Liu Kang: I know what happened to you Anakin Skywalker.
Darth Vader: Anakin Skywalker is dead. I killed him.
Liu Kang: That’s not what Raiden told me.
-
Liu Kang: I know how you fell Vader.
Darth Vader: You know nothing about me child.
Liu Kang: Says the chosen one of his universe.
-
Darth Vader: Because of what of Kronika has been doing. I remember every timeline.
Geras: That’s impossible.
Darth Vader: I remember EVERYTHING.
-
Darth Vader: Take me to Kronika and I may spare your life.
Geras: Nothing will save your mother and Padme.
Darth Vader: Her power is the only chance that could restore EVERYTHING.
-
Geras: You remember all the timelines of your universe?
Darth Vader: Many, and it haunts me. Erased memories and other things. Why?
Geras: I think some sort of mouse touched your universe years ago.
-
Geras: I’ve met Jedi and Sith before.
Darth Vader: So the stories about you are true. Even the one with Darth Revan?
Geras: Revan was shocked that I couldn’t die.
-
Darth Vader: Kronika’s plans are horrific.
Cetrion: They will restore balance.
Darth Vader: Does that include me killing Padme over and over again!?
-
Darth Vader: Your mother is responsible for so much pain.
Cetrion: You think killing her is going to fix your life?
Darth Vader: I’ll start by killing you first you witch!
-
Darth Vader: Out of my way you pathetic excuse for a god.
Cetrion: The force means nothing to an elder god.
Darth Vader: Then I will rip out your spine with the force!
-
Darth Vader: A fellow soldier who lost his limbs too.
Jax: That bother you?
Darth Vader: Let’s just say I know your pain all too well.
-
Jax: You a robot or something?
Darth Vader: I’m sadly more machine than you Major Briggs.
Jax: Well that sucks to hear.
-
Darth Vader: Burnt alive and breathing problems I see
Kabal: What? You can relate?
Darth Vader: Let’s say I know all too well being in your position.
-
Johnny Dude: Dude, you look very familiar.
Darth Vader: I’m not interested Mr. Cage.
Johnny Cage: You look like out of some well known franchise I’ve seen before.
-
Darth Vader: Another so called cocky hero.
Johnny Cage: I remind you of someone? Maybe not as good looking as me?
Darth Vader: You remind me of Han Solo...yet he’s more impressive than you ever will be.
-
Darth Vader: Please stand aside child. I’d rather not hurt you.
Cassie Cage: Pfft! Why’s that?
Darth Vader: Or I’ll cut off your hand like I did to my own son.
Think I’ve done enough for now. Trying to make a lot of Star Wars reference. And I remembered when first doing the Geras one. My ideas for Darth Vader’s ending...honestly, the ones with Cetrion are indeed the best. And I’m just listening to this piece of soundtrack from episode 3 lol. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yS4sTIracJ0
And if anyone notices with those lines with Geras...oh boy...the potential with MK11′s storyline and this affecting the Star Wars universe...oh man. XD Damn, it’s 8:15 am.

Work summary: For so long, Din fought the reality of giving the child up, giving him to the jetii and moving on. He had prepared for it, packed a bag and left it all behind, so his son could have the life he deserved. All until he didn't have to. Or the one where Luke rescues Grogu on Tython, and Din rescues Luke in return.
Chapter summary: Luke, Din and the child continue their journey to Mos Espa, and Din makes a startling discovery
...
The pre-dawn light stirs Luke from a dream, and he rises with a grin. It was the sixth morning of their journey, the sixth day of traversing the desert waste of Tatooine with strangers and friends alike, and he was  enjoying  it. Surely more than one should enjoy journeying across dunes on the back of a bantha. But he was. He was at peace—  true  peace— perhaps for the first time since he had left Tatooine in the first place all those years ago.
There was peace to be had, even when Luke thought himself incapable of relaxing outside of his morning meditations, this was it. This was what he had been searching for, this  feeling,  this realization that his endless searching would never be victorious. That perhaps what he needed was to be still, be still and listen.
The force was like the wind, here. It ebbed and flowed, the energy of all living things tangled in a web, connecting each and every thing to another. It swelled around Grogu, the child small in his father's lap, dipping and swaying around the Mandalorian. Luke looked within, pleased and in awe of the feeling of oneness that the force had always given him. There was still so much Luke didn't know. So many secrets and techniques that had been lost, fallen to time. He wanted to learn, wanted to listen, but his world was so  noisy,  engines and footsteps and clanging metal. There was no use for the force on Chandrila, on Coruscant, on any of the core worlds. Whatever the Jedi order used to be before the war was gone, now. It was up to Luke to decide how it would continue; if it would continue, the future of the Jedi was in his hands.
It was a lot of pressure, Luke thought with a reflective exhale, a pressure that had been placed on him with the expectation that he would fulfill it. But he was older, now. Not necessarily wiser, but perhaps warier. Less anticipatory, more thankful; not often expectant of good things to come his way. It made him feel old, and Leia had teased him about it when he told her. But he was a Jedi master, damn it. What the order looked like, what it felt like, was up to him. And nothing Leia could say would change his mind.
Luke opened his eyes from his musings and looked around, not that there was much to look at. They were still far enough from Mos Espa that the landscape was unfamiliar. And even if he had, as a youth trapped here, he wasn't focused on the sand so much as the sky. Wishing beyond his wildest hopes that one day he'd be able to pilot something better than a landspeeder or a skyhopper, that he'd join the Academy and never have to step foot on Tatooine again.
It was a dream he had garnered for much of his childhood, unaware of his father's prowess as a pilot beyond what Owen and Beru had told him. Unaware, but still hopeful that there was something greater waiting for him out there.
But that was years ago, Luke thought with a pain of nostalgia, almost ten years. He wasn't a youth anymore, and any great hopes he held for his future were quiet ones. Find more force-sensitive younglings, set up a temple on a peaceful planet. Spend time with his sister, and Han and Lando, try and keep his droids running smoothly and his lightsaber in one piece. He wanted a life for himself that was different than that of a rebellion hero, something…predictable, something still. Something with a garden and a familiar bed, and… if he could be selfish, perhaps a companion. Someone to keep him company, someone to love and cherish and grow old with. Luke wanted that life, a quiet life.
He had spent his years in the rebellion being what the alliance needed him to be; a damn good pilot, a leader, an example: the poster boy for hope and peace across the galaxy. But he wasn't that man anymore. He didn't want to be a hero; he wanted  peace . Because with heroism came fame, recognition; Luke didn't  want  people to come up to him and thank him for his service. He didn't want those he didn't know to shake his hand and congratulate him on what he did for the rebellion. He didn't want the insignia of the damn Death Star painted on the starboard wing of his X-wing, a concrete and constant reminder of what he had done in the name of the rebellion.
A million souls had died that day, and there were still nights Luke woke up in a cold sweat imagining their fiery deaths. Still times when he sat down suddenly in great pain, still moments where he was overcome with the overwhelming swells of grief and loss. Leia tried to comfort him, as did the droids in the medbay after he came to that day.  It wasn't your fault,  they told him, pressing the personal comm code for the rebellion psychologist into his palm.  You did what had to be done. More people would've died, whole systems would have been destroyed had we not done it first.
We , they had said, and Luke remembered. Had not  we  done it first. But there was no  we,  was there? There were the half dozen pilots behind him, and later Han and Chewie in the  Falcon,  but it was Luke who made the shot and ended it all. Luke, who would hold those souls with him for the rest of his days.
And all because Luke wanted to be a hero, all because he wanted nothing more than to leave when all that he had ever truly needed was at hand, sitting on a moisture farm in Tatooine.
It was easy to say it was all behind him; the war was over. He was lucky that so many of his friends had survived, that he still had his X-wing and Artoo and Chewie and Han and Leia, but…something was missing. Of course, he had lost friends; he wasn't the only man to be orphaned and alone. But it wasn't just that; it was  companionship  that Luke craved. A companion who didn't care that he was Luke Skywalker of the rebel alliance, who didn't mind the lightning scars on his arms and belly, someone who didn't  care  he had a missing hand and debilitating nightmares; someone who wouldn't ask questions he didn't want to answer. Someone to joke with him, to  care  for him, someone who would hold him tight and not let him go.
Luke remembered crumbling the comm code in his palm, nodding to the droid so they would leave, promising to himself that he'd never call them no matter how bad it got. He couldn't bear the pity in their eyes, the looks of  disappointment  when they saw him for who he truly was. As if he'd let them down; as if the great impenetrable Luke Skywalker was a fluke, not a hero, just a kid from Tatooine with strange powers and a good trigger finger. He wasn't all that they thought he was.
And so, for five years, he tried to forget.
And frankly speaking, he was more or less successful. He watched with pride and happiness as Leia, and the other generals in the rebellion became the pillars of the New Republic, stood by their side when Han and Leia wed. He had held his twin's hand and congratulated her on her pregnancy, and when Ben Solo was born with early signs of force-sensitivity, promised to teach him the ways of the Jedi. And others did the same; his friends settled down with partners and friends, started families and adopted orphans from every corner of the galaxy. Started a new life, and Luke watched with a feeling close to loneliness as he failed to do the same.
It wasn't that he  wasn't  interested; there were more than one pilot and hotshot with a blaster he had taken a fancy to over the course of the war. Luke wasn't the only one to sneak a bedfellow into his compartment after dark, but it wasn't what he wanted. He wanted something deeper, something less desperate, something more than a stolen kiss in a cupboard and fumbling hands in the dark. Luke wanted something,  someone , he could hold tightly, someone to comfort him, to stand by him; someone who didn't sleep with Luke Skywalker for the rights to goading brags at sabacc tables and crowded cantinas. As if was a pawn, just another ace in an X-wing with no future and no past and no interest in living beyond the moment.
Leia tried to set him up once or twice, but Luke hadn't taken her up on it. He wasn't interested in senators or state officials, less so in their stories about the war. DIdn't they get it? Didn't they understand that all Luke wanted to do was to forget? Move on? He didn't  want  to be the grand hero for the rest of his days? Why couldn't anyone understand that all Luke wanted was for others to treat him like a person? Not a legend, not a hero, but just as  himself?
And then, out of nowhere, he received the distress call from Tython; and everything changed in a moment. His ill-timed philosophical musings of a better life put on hold for a child calling desperately for help.
The cost had been his X-wing and Artoo, who (no doubt) would have words to share with Luke when they returned to rescue him, but it had been worth it.
Because now, he had friends.
Friends who neither knew nor cared that he was Luke Skywalker of the rebel alliance; Luke Skywalker, the man who blew up the Death Star. Luke Skywalker, the Jedi, the last Jedi in the galaxy, and Darth Vader's son. They didn't know, they didn't mind. They treated Luke as one of their own with no questions asked. To them, he was just that,  Luke , and who he was to them was who he was inside. The one with an eye for mechanics, a love of flying, a fair knowledge of desert flora and fauna. He was Grogu's teacher, Scoeeri and Laele's friend. He was Varre's companion as Grogu played with her baby, A'vod and Cor's helper into the underground cave network Luke had  definitely  not known existed. He was the mechanic who helped Cobb Vanth with his modified speeder when it broke down the night before.
But to the Mandalorian, it was strangely unclear. What was Luke to him?
Surely a friend, Luke thought with careful consideration, trying not to be nosy and look behind him to see for himself. He was intelligent, but quiet, kind. Soft and generous with those around him, despite the thick armour about him at all times. They were friends, right? The man trusted Luke to watch his child, to teach him the ways of the Jedi. All Luke had done was meditate with the child, but so far, Grogu's father had accompanied them every morning, exiting the tent he and the child shared fully armoured with the baby in his arms. It became more difficult to focus with the Mandalorian so near (damn, his thoughts were  blinding),  but Luke tried. But even as he did, even as he taught the child about the bond he was forming between them, he couldn't ignore the primary strand Grogu had. Luke could feel the golden strands connecting Grogu to his father twist and fold together with time, evolving from strings to cords to bolts, impenetrable. And this man was apparently just that, not force-sensitive at all.
There was something amused in Grogu's consciousness when Luke asked the boy about it. Clearly, the baby knew something Din didn't, but he didn't pry. Whatever it was that had brought Grogu and his father together had been formed in and amongst significant loss. Grogu had told Luke about the day his father adopted him, describing the feelings of warmth and oneness he experienced whenever his father held him close. The warmth the baby exuded through the force when he spoke about his  buir  was blinding, and when the child asked about Luke's  buir,  his parents, he deflated with a brush of pain at the loss he had experienced. He didn't want to shock the child, but he told him that his parents were gone, passed on; but they had loved Luke very much.
The child sent a wave of understanding and affection, and Luke felt a small hand grip his own.  Together,  the baby seemed to say, his eyes wide and open.  Even if you have no  buir  of your own, my family is yours to share.
Luke let his eyes drift shut, a smile widening as a tear slipped down his cheek. What would it be, Luke wondered, his mind struggling to face the impossible, what would it be to take what had been offered? What would it be to have a family of his own?
Luke thought of the baby's father, the warmth Luke felt whenever he considered him. He and the child were so happy together, so content to stay close, and it brought a laugh to his throat when Luke remembered when the Mandalorian tossed his child in the air for his amusement when he carved figures out of tough stalks of grass for the children to play with. More so when he and his companion were alone, but Luke didn't quite know  what  to think about that.
It was easier to talk when the air was still, and the world was dark, Luke decided, trying not to look too much into his and the Mandalorian's time together. He remembered asking, just that morning, in fact, if his companion could teach him the language of the Tuskens. It had been an innocent enough inquiry, stemming from nothing but good intentions. For the whole time he'd known her, Luke had been using the force to read the baseline level of Varre's thoughts and emotions to communicate with her. He still felt uneasy about it and wanted to speak freely when Grogu and her baby played together. But the Mandalorian had stuttered out something unintelligible, gesturing strangely before Luke got the message. Too far. It was just as well, he supposed he could ask Cobb. Even the basics would be better than nothing.
But there was  something  to be said for having an excuse to spend more time with his companion. Luke enjoyed his company; it was simple, complimentary. The Mandalorian didn't ask prying questions, didn't seem to want anything of him other than his companionship. In the soft evening light when the day's travel was done, they sat together and watched the suns set, Grogu often lulling in his father's arms. It was in these times that Luke spoke, knowing that the Mandalorian wouldn't mind. He talked about his childhood spent not far from here, his family, his sister. Spoke about how proud he was of Grogu's growth in the short time they had been together, joked about the funny expression on Laele's face when he caught Cobb staring at him.
His companion laughed a little at that. Luke felt his chest warming, the deep tones of his laugh raising a blush to Luke's cheeks. Was that all it took to make him laugh? It  had  been funny, Cobb's expressions were longing and soft, and it was nice to take the piss out of someone else, for a change. For so innocent a recollection, for so simple a reason, his companion had laughed; and Luke wanted nothing more than to hear him do it again.
When they hitched up their bantha's the next morning to begin, Luke couldn't help but feel an itch on the back of his neck and turned without thinking to see the Mandalorian looking right at him. Luke had never found it difficult to understand his companion's expressions even with the helmet but blushed anyway. Even the implication that the Mandalorian had been looking in his direction was enough to bring a stuttering breath to Luke's chest. The suns were bright; perhaps he didn't notice the flush that had settled across Luke's face. Or maybe he had; Luke thought with a strange lurch in his gut; the Mandalorian  didn't look away  but tilted his head in recognition instead.
Kriff,  how was he supposed to turn away?
Luke closed his eyes and tried to steady his breathing, turning his head firmly in front of him, refusing to budge his position no matter how much he might want to.
Luckily or not, their journey across the dunes was much the same as it always was, the steps of his bantha slow and lurching, massaging and opening Luke's sit bones and hip joints in a way they hadn't ever been massaged before. A sand crawler appeared in the far north-east, and Luke jerked at the sound of A'Vor, Cobb and the Mandalorian drawing their rifles.
Luke started at the sound of Grogu protesting in the Mandalorian's saddlebag. He turned, catching his companion's eye with what he hoped to be wordless understanding, halting his bantha in his tracks to let the Mandalorian catch-up.
"Can you," the Mandalorian said softly, not wishing the others to overhear. "Can you convince the Jawas to stay away?"
Luke nodded, "If you want me to. Do you want me to take the child? You'll need both hands to use your rifle,"
"Yes," the Mandalorian said, handing Luke the squirming child. Luke sent a wave of calm to the baby and felt him settle in Luke's lap, unhappy and concerned but willing to remain quiet for the time being. Luke took a deep breath, steadying his mind before reaching out across the sand, feeling inside him a flurry of activity. He had never fully mastered the Jedi mind tricks he had seen Ben perform; they felt so invasive, so personal, to actively work against one's will to achieve his ends. Luke didn't think the Jawas would mind, and at the very least, they owed him from the last time he was on Tatooine. He felt only a twinge of guilt in redirecting them to the southwest, far away from their little caravan.
"They seem to be turning," Cobb said from ahead of them, a pair of binocs in his hands. Luke blinked his eyes open with a smile.
"Imagine that," the Mandalorian said, and Luke smiled, pleased. Cobb lowered his blaster, and the Mandalorian did the same, lowering his heavy pulse rifle to its holster on the side of his bantha.
"Can I keep the child for the morning?" Luke asked, looking down at Grogu, calming down now that his father was still. "He could use a change of scenery."
"If you'd like to," the Mandalorian said but then hesitated, fishing in his saddlebag for something. "He's fine in the satchel, but I have a head covering for him."
That was how Luke found himself fixing a canvas hat to the baby's head, laughing at its floppy brim and too wide chin strap as the baby cooed at this strange thing on his body.
"It's a hat, Grogu," Luke said, adjusting the garment so it didn't fall. "It'll keep you safe in the sun; your dad doesn't want you to get sunburnt,"
Luke understood the hesitancy; he had applied a sunblock patch every day of his life before he left Tatooine and resumed the habit now that he'd returned without a hitch. But Luke recalled the Mandalorian's hesitancy in applying on onto the child, unsure if it would irritate his skin or cause a rash. Luke had watched with affection, helping the Mandalorian drape the baby in his tunics so the beating suns would stay off the child's skin. Grogu didn't seem to mind and was fascinated with this strange fabric in front of his face.
"Keep it on, Grogu, that's it," Luke said with a laugh, settling the baby between himself and the saddle horn. "Look, I have one too!"
Grogu turned and smiled toothily at Luke's sun gear, babbling happily about everything and nothing and all of the things around.
Luke felt the Mandalorian's gaze on him for the entirety of the morning, and when Luke turned with the pretence of showing the baby where his father was, Luke flushed, a hesitant smile on his face.

Remember how Ben was a metaphor for struggling children rebelling against parents and moving from adolescence to adulthood and trying to find their way? Guess the message was unless you were the perfect child, you didn't deserve to be with your family ever.
I honestly, really and truly thought this meant they would never dream of doing this to him. The two posts before I had to admit the leaks were true are literally me going on about what fucking scumbags they’d have to be to do this. To sit in interviews and say that shit, to encourage vulnerable people and kids to identify with him, to go even harder ramping up to this film underscoring he was a child and victim and in need of help he never received.
I thought being the last Skywalker and being knowingly, intentionally and decisively a touchstone for lost children whom they seemed to invest so much in creating, for whom they’d made the stakes so high meant there was no way in fuck they could ever, ever do this. They couldn’t possibly mean to treat iconic characters like this, to kill off the entire original cast for nothing, to destroy their happiness and victory for nothing; they couldn’t possibly be so callous with something millions of people care about?
They HAVE TO KNOW making this already sympathetic character more and more and more relatable and loveable and vulnerable while telling a story which makes him above all a victim of the Skywalker legacy who has never once since conception had a chance to be his own person because of it and then saying he’s unworthy to carry it was a fucking HORRIFYING take. They said that’s a lonely little boy whose parents failed him who is trying his best to find any ANY sense of safety in the world by becoming what they’ve all told him he was all his life. Someone so desperate to give love, his compassion is spilling out all over the place even when he’s wrapped himself up in graveclothes and a machine-like mask.
They wrote him as coming of age and they had him fall in love with a similar lonely young soul and they told us this was a fairy tale about hope. They made the culmination and healing of the legacy of Star Wars and the resolution of he new ST protagonist’s arc the same thing- everything is pushing towards this perfect capstone. You can deliver everything and actually add something genuinely meaningful and significant to this epic saga, make it richer and more complete. They told us this was about hope, about a real ending, about everything SW was ever about, about a myth for kids that would help us understand our own comings of age.
And JJ fuckface Abrams sat in an interview and said this on 13 December 2019
The Skywalker Saga is and has always been a family story. But I do think that complexity, the question of if the son of Han & Leia can be turned to the dark side can’t any of us, what is it to be the kid of these heroes.
Like the basic lack of fucking decency, the disregard for a beloved cultural institution, the message of ‘hope you can pull yourself up by your bootstraps children because if you can’t you don’t deserve love and if you can’t get your shit together without any love then you deserve to die!’ Knowing what he’s saying. He knows.
In the franchise which asked you to love Darth fucking Vader unconditionally and made ZERO apologies for it because anyone can be saved and everyone is deserving of compassion. I genuinely… I just genuinely… how dare they.

Star Wars/Avatar Au
An overall summary of a “star wars characters but in the avatar universe” au that I’ve been developing (more detailed synopsis to come!):
Pretty long tbh:
In this universe, benders are somewhat rarer than in ATLA and when found, are usually taken in by Raava’s Order for training (it’s pretty much completely optional, and no “limiting contact with families” rules like in canon, although usually they do drift apart). Raava’s Order consists of benders of all four elements, as well as the Avatar, and it is tradition that after group training from a young age, a master takes a learner on who bends a different element from themselves, to expand each of their horizons and assure that their bending is not limited by certain styles ascribed to one element. Ceremonial sword fighting is also an important tradition.
For most of their past, all four nations have been peaceful and friendly. However, as Palpatine (who’s hiding his firebending) rises to power as the Firelord, attacks by the spirits have been spreading across the world.
Much like in Star Wars, Palpatine amasses more power (over his own nations and over the others, slowly, slowly forming an empire) and eventually places benders of Raava’s Order in charge of various battalions and armies (non benders, or the clones in this universe, but of course they’re not actually clones) to fight the spirits (he’s probably connived with Vaatu and manipulated the spirits as well) as the destruction gets worse and worse. However, as the destruction continues, tensions between benders and non benders also rise, and Palpatine manages to paint the Order as power hungry tyrants who seek to suppress the non benders as they increase their military power. On the other hand, he pushes a view of firebenders as “noble”, “selfless”, and “trustworthy”. This is achieved through subtle propaganda mostly.
Eventually, Palpatine amasses enough power for Order 66, wiping out all non-fire benders and non benders that won’t be sympathetic to the regime. He expands his regime to be global, taking over the other governments (which he’s already slowly been doing throughout the war). He uses his last vestiges of power over the spirits for this, before getting rid of the spirits entirely (to gain the trust of the people: “Look! Now that Raava’s Order is gone, the attacks have ceased.”). He also uses Anakin Skywalker, a powerful firebender who he’s been manipulating for years, to take out Shaak Ti, the current avatar and a native earthbender.
Starting immediately after, he starts to induct (brainwash) firebenders into his new army (as soon as they are discovered, no matter how young). This army helps him keep his iron fisted rule over the nations but also hunts down any benders of other elements and disposes of them. It is “led” (in Palpatine's words, but not in spirit--he sees Anakin as his tool and nothing more) by Anakin, who Palpatine rechristens “Darth Vader” to get rid of the association to the old Raava’s Order.
Luke Skywalker, born just after Shaak Ti’s death, is the next avatar. He grows up hiding his bending, just like his father before him, to avoid being hunted down by the Empire.
Leia Skywalker (who goes by Organa), is a firebender who also grows up hiding her bending, like her father before her, so she isn’t brainwashed and inducted into Palpatine’s personal army.
Padme Amidala manages to get Luke to Owen and Beru, two old friends of Shmi’s, and Leia to Bail and Breha before being hunted down and killed by Palpatine’s lackeys, who forget to mention that she was no longer pregnant to Palpatine before Palpatine killed them to wrap up loose ends (see, he convinced Anakin that Padme had already been killed, and by the Order no less, by playing up the bender/non-bender tensions, insinuating Padme was a threat to the Order for years and years, and playing up Pong Krell and Anakin’s own traumatic childhood experience).
Eventually, the rebellion grows, and Luke and Leia both join it, along with Han, an orphaned nonbender accompained by a shirsu named Chewbacca. Luke discovers that Anakin/Vader is his father in a reverse of what happened in canon Star Wars, and Anakin, after lots of soul searching and ~big~ realizations, turns double agent and slips information to the rebellion with the code name “Blue Spirit” until eventually he has to blow his cover when Luke is captured and Palpatine orders him to kill the Avatar.
He turns on him, rather dramatically, and in true Anakin fashion gets electrocuted. A lot. He’s trying to distract Palpatine so that Luke can escape, but Luke’s like nah, goes into the avatar state, gets them both out, and saves him with avatar-state-boosted healing.
Anakin physically joins the rebellion, reunites with Obi-wan and Ahsoka, meets Leia, and helps them eventually overthrow Palpatine and the Empire once and for all.
Note that Anakin as Vader in this au is still a semi-decent person, albeit one who’s been tricked and manipulated (and brainwashed and probably tortured a lot) by Palpatine. He was rebelling against Palpatine even before meeting Luke, in subtle ways (like showing mercy, helping kids escape, all that jazz) but almost never in ways that could be traced back to him. He did it more or less subconsciously though. Anakin here is no youngling slaughterer, though he still did kill Shaak Ti and do lots of bad (TM).
Where are our iconic characters during this story? Or, more detailed info on our darling characters
Well:
- Anakin Skywalker is a powerful firebender, who had to hide his bending until he was ten or eleven and found by the Order to avoid incurring Watto’s (an earthbender’s) wrath
- Shmi Skywalker is a nonbender (and Anakin has a father, just one who’s probably dead before he’s born)
- Obi-wan is a waterbender, both an adept healer and an adept warrior, trained by
- Qui-gon Jinn, a carefree airbender who dies at the hands of the spirit Maul
- Padme Amidala is a nonbender but powerful political leader in the Water Tribes who’s often involved in international affairs and has made quite a lot of enemies in her pursuits of peace and justice
- Ahsoka Tano is a spirited airbender who Anakin eventually trains and considers his younger sister
- Shaak Ti is the avatar, a wise leader and teacher of Raava’s Order, and a devout pacifist
- Yoda, Plo Koon, and Kit Fisto are waterbenders
- Mace Windu, Pong Krell (who ends up betraying his army similarly to canon), and Luminara are earth benders
- Aayla Secura and Quinlan Vos are air benders
- Count Dooku (who never fell to Palpatine’s manipulations in this au, but instead died in an early battle against the spirits), and Even Piell are firebenders
- Bail and Breha are non benders and monarchs of the earth kingdom
- Owen and Beru are non benders childhood friends of Anakin who lived in the same village as him
more detailed synopsis of each movie’s equivalent to come later!! I have a lot of thoughts about this, lol
