Art Tip #1 - Color Theory: A Crash Course
Art isn't complete without colors, right? Unless you'd consider a blank white sheet of paper as art, then by all means...
In today's first stop at the Art Terminal, we will be learning how to use colors using Color Theory!
Being knowledgeable about basic color theory can really help you develop your skills as an artist no matter what medium you'll be using - be it traditional art, digital art, or even a mix of both!
It may seem confusing at first but with this guide, you'll be making well-coordinated compositions with flying colors in no time!
PART 1: How to use the Color Wheel
This infamous wheel by Isaac Newton helps you see the relationships between the colors.
Keep in mind these 3 categories:
⓵ Primary Colors: Red┃Blue┃Yellow
These are the first three basic colors - all other colors can be created by mixing them in different ways.
Tip: mixing all three creates the color brown!
⓶ Secondary Colors: Purple (red+blue)┃Green (blue+yellow)┃Orange (yellow+red)
If you've noticed, these colors are created by mixing our primary colors.
⓷ Tertiary Colors: Red-Orange┃Red-Purple┃Blue-Purple┃Blue-Green┃Yellow-Green┃Yellow-Orange
As you might have guessed, we get these colors by mixing our primary and secondary colors.
Part 2: What are the Color Properties?
Keep in mind Color has 3 primary properties:
⓵ Hue: the colors in their purest state - or in other words, a color's name.
⓶ Saturation: the brightness or dullness of a color - the intensity or purity of a hue.
Tip: High Saturation/Saturated = color looks very bright ┃ Low Saturation/Desaturation = color looks washed out or greyed out
⓷ Value: the degree of lightness or darkness of a hue.
Tip: There are 3 ways to change a color's value: Shade┃Tint ┃Tone
Shade/Shading: a shade is a color that is produced by adding black.
Tint: a tint is a color that is produced by adding white.
Tone: a tone is a color that is produced by adding grey.
PART 3: What is Color Harmony?┃What Color Combinations or Schemes can we use?
Go back to the Color Wheel as it is a good reference in helping you create appealing schemes.
Here are 6 common combinations you can apply in your work:
⓵ Analogous: uses colors (around 2-4) that are next to each other in the color wheel - Match them!
⓶ Complementary: uses colors that are opposite or across of each other on the color wheel - if you can't match 'em, clash 'em with their opposites!
Tip: matching these colors creates great contrast and visual interest so they can overpower each other sometimes so keep that in mind.
⓷ Split-Complementary: 1 base color then 2 colors adjacent to its complementary color - if the contrast too much, split them!
⓸ Tetradic: uses 2 complementary pairs. This forms a rectangle on the wheel - if you need more variations go double complementary!
⓹ Triadic: 3 colors that are evenly spaced out in the color wheel. You're free to choose from a variety!
⓺ Monochromatic: uses different tones, shades, and tints of a singular color. Sometimes it just works!
PART 4: What is Color Temperature?
Ever wonder why some compositions feel cold or hot? It is a fact that color has the ability to evoke feelings or emotions. As such, color temperature is the one responsible for this - it is the "warmth" or "coolness" of a color.
Warm colors: Reds┃Oranges┃Yellows
Generally seen as colors that are bright, cheerful, active, or happy
Cool Colors: Purples┃Blues┃Greens
Generally seen as colors that are dark, mysterious, melancholic, or gloomy
And that concludes this stop for today! These tips are a lot to take in, we feel you, and that's alright - come back to this station when you need a quick reference. We hope you learned a lot from this and that you'll be able to apply them in your paintings or digital illustrations!
Now pack your art supplies and start creating! Safe travels~

please may I request some tango tek? I love your tango design <3
No harm in letting a netherborn burn right
I'm sorry this is wildly different from what you probably wanted sdfhgfdg I'VE WANTED TO DRAW JUST!! ENFLAMED TANGO!!!! for so long!! THANK YOU!!! I saw you going through my blog awhile back and it absolutely brightened my day, and I'm so glad you like my Tango design.. <3. In any case more normal Tango art will come dont you fret!!
He's a little upset too but shh I just. I just love the idea of flames of misery. Love the idea of him bursting into a little bit of a wildfire as a treat (thinking about Last Life Tango cough) he deserves it. The idea of "let him burn, he will calm down eventually, if we approach we'll just get hurt, he won't" (cough how Team BEST largely kept distance from him during his outburst, even Skizz) vs DL Jimmy who approached anyway, because he saw that Tango would end up more hurt than him if he didn't. Love the idea of Tango containing his flames and refusing to ever use them to hurt someone, and that he's gotten so good at it, so when he bursts into flame its just that much more.... arggg sorry what were we talking about
The sketch too because his expression looks way better here imo AGH its hard for me to convey expression well in lineless art, let alone in color when tango's eyes are fuckin full red. But whatever!!

How do you color your art!? Like color theory and stuff!! Your art looks so vibrant and gorgeous!!!
I like your Circus AU very much, Julie looks absolutely adorable haha!!
Babe im gonna be real with you, I just fuck around and find out--
Okok but in all honesty, I dont know. My main tip when it comes to coloring is knowing the value (darkness and lightness of colors). Your art could have the wackiest colors as possible but if you nail the values right, it will work out
Another thing, pride flags lowkey actually highkey are useful as references for color combos. Some peeps actually pointed out how Dolly's hair is the lesbian flag and yeaps--
Also also thanks! Have this Julie! Im still figuring out the other peep's designs but her's is pretty much set lol (i used the trans flag as a color guide hkabjdggjagjdg)

I wonder why each little bird has someone to sing to, sweet things to, a gay little love melody (*´∀`)♪🎶
This drawing is a little celebration for Crowley’s card that will be dropping soon on the 19th! The lyric above is from Sleeping Beauty 🎶 Crowley and Lilia give me the vibes of those older couples who always like to dance or sing along to music, no matter how bad or good they may be at it. The Magical Gramophone is in the background, which can apparently play any song from memory. What song would they listen to? 🤔
(More headcanons and reference image credits below the cut! ^_^)
Ever since the Crowley-Levan theory became more well known, I heard many say that it meant that there would be potential romantic undertones (past or present) between Crowley and Lilia, and…I genuinely thought that was part of the appeal! 。゚(゚´ω`゚)゚。 Levan theory or not, I really like them. What is their ship name? Crowlilia?? If anyone knows, please let me know!🐦⬛🦇 Crowlilia nation where are you…
I don’t really think about headcanon stuff that often, so I thought it would be fun to think of some random headcanons as I went along with the drawing!
It would be fun if Crowley had feathers on his body that are usually covered up by his suit (I absolutely adore Falin from Dungeon Meshi). I see some incredible JP artists draw Crowley with these puffier sort of pants, which I also love. I think it would be interesting if Crowley had a sort of greyed-pale, slight splotchy purple and yellow skin tone, like a deceased body that has reached the pallor mortis stage? (*゚▽゚*) It causes an uncanny and uncomfortable feeling whenever most students look at him…there’s just something wrong with him and no one wants to ask NAJXJSJD (I’d like to think that it’s blot related, and his long-term exposure to it has Not Been Good for him 💀)
For Lilia, I think he deserves some bat-like ears ^_^ I imagine him to have scars all over due to his past as a General. I ended up drawing his torso and legs less as thin as they are in canon by accident, but I kept it because I think he’d have a better diet now than his General days as well! (*゚▽゚*) I am jealous of Lilia,,,I’d like to dance with Crowley! (● ˃̶͈̀ロ˂̶͈́)੭ꠥ⁾⁾
I’m really no good at thinking of relationship headcanons haha, so I’d love to hear everyone’s ideas about them! Even though their silliness would technically be combined in a relationship, I feel like Crowley and Lilia could balance each other out? Despite all the antics they would certainly get up to, there’s a mutual acknowledgment of each other’s life experience and age. I can imagine them idly talking about parts of their own pasts over tea or a stroll in nice weather…maybe not huge chunks of backstory, but just little moments from their long lifespan that has stuck with them since. Crowley could potentially become more responsible because he’d be fretting over Lilia’s gaming time ANJDJXBD. Crowley would absolutely eat Lilia’s cooking and to him it would taste good…crows/ravens can eat pretty much anything like meat, berries, garbage and carrion so I don’t think Crowley would be upset about the chopped liver randomly inserted into his meal 😭 Even if they don’t really look it, to me they really give off the vibes of the typical image of an older couple! 🤣🐦⬛🦇
