Virgil Finlay's artistic speculation on what the "Lost City of the Monkey God" or "White City" in Honduras looked like, based on the stories of explorer/spy Theodor Morde, who claimed to have discovered it in 1940. It was written about in the Sunday Weekly, edited by Abraham Merritt, the greatest fantasy author and publisher of his generation, who had an ear for developments in antiquities in Mexico, Central Asia/Silk Road, and the South Pacific.

It is often speculated that the government of Honduras uses legends of a White City in the unexplored region of Mosquitia as a way to bring tourists to Honduras.
