Keep Your Coat Safe

My grandmother tried to teach me my lessons when we swam together, but I was a difficult pup. I argued with her over and over, too young and too stubborn to understand the importance of what she was trying to tell me.

‘You must be very careful when you remove your coat,’ she would say. ‘Everyone who walks the land will want to take it from you, so keeping your coat safe is the only way to keep yourself safe.’

‘They can’t all want to steal my coat,’ I would retort. ‘There must be some people who don’t do that.’

‘You can’t take the chance,’ she said. ‘Once your coat is stolen, you’ll have a very difficult time getting it back. And then what will you do if you find someone that you want to give your coat to? You’ll have nothing to offer them, and they’ll have no way to keep you.’

‘But it doesn’t make any sense.’ I swam ahead, propelling myself through the water with my powerful tail and then using my fins to twist back around and face her. ‘I have to keep my coat just so I can give it away? Why would I ever want to give my coat away?’

She watched me steadily with her wide black eyes. ‘Because when you find someone you want to keep, you’ll have to let them keep you in return.’

we need more aspec representation in media. and specifically aspec men and adults.

i just finished listening to the magnus archives, and the main character (jon) s canonically ace. i was talking about tma to my friend the next day and went “oh! and the main guy is ace!” and she went “just like you!” and. when i tell you my heart swelled up. he was just like me. there was representation of an adult man who was asexual. not broken. not seen as strange, or weird, or inhuman (at least. well. not for those reasons). he was just a casual ace man in media. another thing that struck me about tma is that jon was still loved, despite being ace. he still got to experience romance and love and he had an amazing relationship with someone who loved him for him. listening to tma genuinely helped me see that i’m not immature or less of a guy for being ace, and it doesn’t mean i can’t have a romantic relationship. 

if a simple line in a podcast confirming a character to be ace can have such a big impact on me (someone whos pretty confident about his sexuality), imagine what it could do for people who are more uncertain, or who are feeling broken. 

imagine if someone could see themselves in an aromantic character - someone who isn’t seen as broken, or lonely, or incapable of any and all love, and get the same “hey, its me!” feeling

imagine if an ace or aro character helped a kid realize it’s okay to never want a relationship 

imagine if an ace or aro character could spare someone from doing things they’re uncomfortable with because look, other people are like that too, you’re not broken. 

we need more ace and aro characters in media.

I love how intricate asexuality can be. No sex at all? Sure! Just want to watch? Brilliant! Only comfortable with topping? You go girl! Only rarely feel aroused and when you do it's very touch and go? Wonderful! Kinky but not in a sex way? Coolio! One gripe I have with the tma fandom is that they will not stop sexualizing Jon aka the ONE asexual character and then be like “Well asexuality is a spectrum! Asexual people can have sex!” Which yeah, true, but they say Jon doesn’t period. Literally the direct quote is like “Oh yeah Jon doesn’t at all.” AT ALL. Now stop writing/drawing that man having sex so fucking much

Simply wanted to draw a Jon. It's been a while. And it felt wrong not to add a Martin. all I'm going to say to the collective TMA fandom tonight is a large, unironic THANK YOU for being normal about Jon's asexuality. By "normal" I mean openly portraying and embracing ace-ness in each and every flavor. Creator after creator in this fandom has their own unique interpretation of Jon's sexuality, and I truly, legitimately feel that this group has created one of the most nuanced and healthy environments for discussing different kinds of attraction

It's Ace Awareness Week!!!

Jon is on the surface the stereotypical ace character- completley depraved of humanity, cold towards everyone around him and too busy for relationships, but through the story we watch him grow as a person, struggle with his own humanity and his disconnection with people around him. We see not just that he cares, but that he loves all those people around him and that he latches onto them till the very end.

I'm not that good at putting my thoughts into words, but I belive it goes without saying that, to me, as an ace person myself, who has struggled for so long with my own humanity purely because I've never seen a character like Jon, and to many other ace people, having a character like this, in somewhat-popular media, who has the same struggles as many asexual people (though ours don't feature the Eldritch horror, I hope), is SO important and so humanizing.

I don't know if Jonny Sims knew what impact making a main character of a horror podcast asexual would have on ace listeners - he probably didn't. But I hope that he found out.

Representation matters, you are not alone and stay safe.
