Oak and Ivy by Paul Dunbar

Born in Dayton, Ohio in 1872 to parents who had been enslaved in Kentucky before the American Civil War, Paul Dunbar was one of the first African American poets to gain national recognition.

Oak and Ivy was his first collection--self published in 1893. By 1895 his works began to appear in major newspapers and magazines, and he went on to publish poem collections, short stories and novels to great acclaim. He become one of the first internationally known African American poets before an untimely death from tuberculosis in 1906, at the age of thirty-three.

He was particularly famous for his so called “dialectic’’ poems--although they make up only a small portion of Dunbar’s work. Overall, his goal was “to interpret my own people through song and story, and to prove to the many that after all we are more human than African.” (From American National Biography)
