There is little that Annabeth cares to remember of her time before becoming a Pebworth. Merely a collection of disjointed memories, fractured hope and careless actions from those that were meant to love her. The product of a careless night, Annabeth was born to a mother too young to look after herself let alone a child. Abandoned and left in an orphanage, Annabeth raised her sister Isla with protective hand and the overbearingness of a mother at only seven. Seeing it as her duty to protect her, she vowed even then that nothing would be able to tear them apart. While the orphanage was as bleak and grey, the people inside held hope for the young souls within. Finding families for as many children as they could muster. Isabella and Angus Pebworth hailed from the highlands, simple folk who always wanted a child of their own; the news of a newborn looking for a home brought them to the orphanage. Only to find that if they wished to take Isla; they’d have to take Annabeth too. While it wasn’t what they’d wished for, it was still a family.

Annabeth knew that she wasn’t wanted. Her age made her less desirable, her guarded attitude and protection over her sister was a challenge. Especially when strange things started to happen. The crashing of a plate when tears started to fall, the playing of the gramophone to sooth Isla without it being turned on, the flickering of lights to accompany her tears. While her parents swore the house was haunted and insisted they fled to the Isle of Skye to escape their demons; Anna feared it wasn’t the house but herself. Exploring the fields behind the village they lived, her eyes fell on four figures all of whom were flying. The magic she’d been hiding under her covers at night of flickering flames wasn’t insanity, it was real and there were others just as she. As quickly as her realization came, she was knocked to the ground by COINNEACH MCKINNON [future brother in law]; who was swiftly scorned by DOUGAL MCKINNON [best friend/fiancè]. Annabeth’s short temper and spark only made the McKinnon’s smirk, who welcomed her to join them gladly. The McKinnon’s saved Annabeth from loneliness and self destruction; akin spirits they taught her about the wizarding world, showing her life, freedom and how to finally breathe.

The Pebworth’s fear of magic tore the family apart. Superstitious, the unknown whelm of witchcraft they saw as cursed. Deeming that no child of theirs would have a hand in such unnatural acts, they burned Hogwarts letters upon arrival only until a mysterious cat appeared at their window. Transforming into a woman before their very eyes, PROFESSOR MINERVA MCGONAGALL [mentor] escorted the witch personally to Hogwarts, throwing shame in her wake for their negligence. Hogwarts was beyond anything she could have wished for. Doned in red, she soared with her fellow Gryffindor’s; atlast finally wanted and free. The brightest witch of her year with resilient prowess, the girl excelled far beyond anyone’s expectations. Able to fight her own battles when the likes of LACHESIS MALFOY [adversary] shouted mudblood across the halls, though with Dougal, ALICE YEN [best friend], FRANK LONGBOTTOM [close friend], AMOS DIGGORY [friend], HESTIA JONES [friend] and IAIN WOOD [friend] readily at her side for once she didn’t need to be her own champion. Yielding a fury of protection for the people she loves, the witch’s devotion to safeguard her chosen family and those vulnerable became her striving purpose. Graduating and taking a job as a Auror under ALASTOR MOODY [boss], she became bold and defiant in her untouchable youth.

Though one night, everything changed. Ravagers stormed the mountains of Skye in hope to capture the famed and protected Hebridean Black dragons. The roars of fire shook the town as dragons cried for their children leaving the McFusty calling any wix on the island to help. Fighting in combat alongside the McKinnon’s, McCormack’s, Wood’s and McGonagall’s the families united managed to ward off the thieves; still with great consequences. Isla had followed her sister with the ambition to help. Though at only twelve, her skills weren’t nearly enough to match that of older wix. Caught between a spell and a dragon, in a blink of an eye Annabeth lost her sister forever. With no body to be found, any life that Isla Pebworth had once held; simply turned to memory. Blamed for her sister’s death, the Pebworths disowned Annabeth. Wanting nothing to do with magic and the daughter that had left their greatest treasure dead, they left never to be seen again. Devastated and plagued with grief; Annabeth’s heartbroken cries echoed through the mountains. With a piece of her soul stolen, despite the McKinnon’s taking her in; the witch was unconsolable. Turned reserved from fear of the unbearable grief that comes with love lost, Annabeth became colder and guarded in a fleeting attempt to protect what remained of her heart.

While many tried to heal the mourning witch, it was Dougal who found a way into her heart. Though arrogant, there was something about him that was disarming. For a man too proud and noble it was maddening, she offered a wit as sharp as a viper leaving their interactions often comical to those around them. Years of friendship turned to love as they bickered over games of wizards chess, sipped butterbeers and healed each other through the misfortune that had befallen them. While their years of friendship, love and then engagement were news celebrated by friends, by most however distaste could be felt in their stares. Most surprising of all; Nathair who’s objection ripped through the fabric of the McKinnon family. Obstinate that she wouldn’t tear them apart, Annabeth fled to the hills. Only for Dougal to capture her in an embrace, claiming there was no place on earth that would be far enough for him to forget the bond they shared; assuring it would meet good ends. While fraught with concern at the growing unrest both within her family and community, Annabeth dove into work. While Alastor fought against the head of law enforcement BARTEMIUS CROUCH SR [boss] insisting she become the head of the department of Hit wix, with her muggle-born status; the Ministry board refused.

Angered, Alastor spoke of a group forming to combat against discrimination and offer tangible change; The Order of the Phoenix.Hungry for purpose, while she knows her time will come, with the growing strife she aches being on the sidelines wanting nothing more than to wage her own war. Though, even she knows it's not wise with anonymous threats of violence left in her office. What started as one, became two, till she was finding threats daily scattered on her desk as pureblood propaganda. While the letters of terror and dark symbols are unnamed, even Annabeth knows she’d be a fool not to dismiss such cryptic messages. Keeping them hidden from her friends and Dougal to not cause alarm, Annabeth has taken the situation into her own hands. Seeking consort from EMMELINE VANCE [friend], the pair are trying to detect a magical trace off of any of the letters she has received. Testing the ink and parchment, to see if it will lead to a clue but coming up nout. But with the most recent letter being slipped under the front door, Annabeth’s nerve is growing strained with how close to home the threats are turning. With Muggles disappearing daily and the threat on non-pureblood wix growing; Annabeth fears that it’s only a matter of time before her name is added to the missing persons list.

The Longbottom family had a long history of being neutral in all things pureblood elite-related. Of course, this meant that some people didn’t respect them as much, but Frank was raised to believe that was not necessarily a bad thing. Frank grew up getting to know people from all backgrounds. Their parents were Aurors, and Frank spent most of their childhood with their grandmother. But this was not necessarily a bad thing since it meant spending time with Nana Longbottom and her friend, Grandma Prewett. That meant time spent with Fabian, Gideon, and Molly - the best sort of friends Frank could have asked for as an only child. Once at Hogwarts, Frank proved to be quite popular. Their personality was warm enough to draw others to them, and Frank had a habit of putting others before themself. It wasn’t all that surprising that Frank got along well with Alice Lestrange now that Frank looks back at their relationship, but it is still surprising the two had become friends when their families had vastly different beliefs.

Following in their parents’ footsteps was an easy choice for Frank. They proudly joined the auror program and take their job seriously. Where they care as much as they do about the job, it wouldn’t be surprising if Frank ultimately sided with the Order of the Phoenix. The only thing holding them back from properly picking a side is pressure from other purebloods. Rodolphus has been nagging about taking the mark and has grown more and more adamant each day. Fabian and Gideon only have good to say about the Order. It’s too much to think about, and the people-pleasing part of Frank knows that picking a side will cause conflict, something that they are not ready to deal with.

Molly Weasley - Close since childhood, Frank considers Molly and the twins family. Frank is willing to do anything to keep a smile on Molly’s face. At least, anything but give into giving the Order a chance. Being work driven has had Frank focused on the Auror department, with changes at the Ministry leaving them and Molly concerned about what the future may hold.

Alice Longbottom - Marrying a Lestrange was practically unthinkable, but Alice had Frank wrapped around their finger in no time. The pair managed to fly under the radar and focus on work for a few years. The shift in power at the Ministry has left extended family encouraging Frank to declare a side on things, and they fear the wrong decision may lead to disaster.

Bellatrix Lestrange - Technically only related through marriage Frank tries their best to give their in-laws a wide berth. Frank knows the Lestranges are trying to sway the Longbottoms to the dark side. The less time Frank spends with Bella, the less they hear about the benefits of taking the mark and serving the Dark Lord.

Once she had produced an heir and a spare for her husband, as was her duty as a pureblood wife, all that Astraea Lestrange wanted was a daughter she could raise just like her mother raised her. Unfortunately, she only got half that wish. Alessandra Lestrange was a beautiful baby, there was no denying, and that fact filled her mother with hope. But as Alessandra grew older it quickly became obvious that she had no interest in being the perfect daughter her mother wanted her to be. For one thing, almost as soon as she could speak she insisted on being called Alice instead of the beautiful, lyrical Italian name her mother chose for her. Another thing that frustrated Mrs. Lestrange to no end was Alice’s habit of abandoning her lessons in etiquette and music to play out in the garden or, far worse, sneak off the Lestrange estate entirely to explore the nearby Muggle village of Muchalls.

Yes, it turned out that little Alice was nothing like her mild-mannered English mother, something Devonshire-born Astraea blamed on the Scottish highlands the Lestrange family claimed as their ancestral home. There was something wild in Alice that, try as she might, Astraea simply could not tame. Alice was happy enough with her dancing lessons, excelling at both ballet and ballroom styles, but when the time came to sit down and be still she found herself gazing longingly out the window at the rocky landscape. Worse still, Alice was never very good at being quiet, refusing to follow her mother’s edict that little girls should be seen and not heard; she was forever pestering Astraea and her brothers with questions and inserting herself into adults’ conversations.

By the time she turned eleven there was one thing everyone who knew Alice was sure of, she was a born Gryffindor. Her mother lamented it, her brothers teased her for it, and she looked forward to it, but the Sorting Hat had other ideas. It whispered in Alice’s head to remember that it knew best, and promptly declared her a Hufflepuff before she had any opportunity to argue. At first Alice was utterly baffled by her sorting, and her mother heartbroken. In Astraea’s eyes the only thing worse than being a Gryffindor was being a Hufflepuff, but she resolved to make the most of it, hoping that the house of patience and loyalty would help to curb her daughter’s defiant temper. And it did, but it also didn’t. Yes, being in Hufflepuff taught Alice the importance of kindness, something rarely valued in the Lestrange household, but it also unlocked her latent passion for fairness and justice.

As a child Alice had always questioned the rules her mother laid out for her. What makes Muggles different from us? Why are they bad? But if muggleborn wix have magic then what’s wrong with them? Astraea never gave her daughter satisfying answers to those questions, but her fellow Hufflepuffs did. The first time Alice asked a prefect if it was okay to have children of mixed heritage share a dorm, something she was sure her mother would never approve of, they quite cheerfully told her it was perfectly fine, and even went so far as to explain why. What Alice learned in her Hogwarts house made so much more sense to her than what her mother had always said, and the older Hufflepuffs gave much better answers to her many questions about the world than simply, “that’s just the way things are.”

So Alice was happy to settle into Hufflepuff and make friends with her classmates regardless of their last name or blood status and she especially loved when her muggleborn friends would patiently explain the workings of their world. She was positively giddy to sign up for Muggle Studies as one of her electives and many of her friends were relieved that she would finally have a professor to ask her questions of. At Hogwarts Alice discovered the thrill of flying, joining the Hufflepuff quidditch team her third year, and also that learning could be fun, if the topic was interesting enough. She excelled in hands-on classes like Herbology and Potions, but sometimes struggled in the more technical courses like Charms and Transfiguration. Defense Against the Dark Arts was fascinating, but History of Magic was deadly dull, and Alice couldn’t wait to get rid of it after her OWL.

Of course all was not sunshine and roses for Alice, even at Hogwarts. While she was generally well liked and quite popular, there were those at school that Alice simply couldn’t get along with. Some people looked down on her and her housemates as weak, while others mocked some of Alice’s closest friends. Her housemates had taught her the importance of turning the other cheek and giving the benefit of the doubt, that you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar and it’s easier to change someone’s mind if you haven’t insulted them, but nothing could completely quench the fire of Alice’s temper. She was willing to give second chances, but third ones were hard to earn. Alice found herself getting into fights and starting arguments that lost her house points and saw her sent to detention more times that she should strictly be proud of, but she was never ashamed to stand up for what was right, no matter the consequences.

For the first time in Alice's life, Roderick Lestrange took notice of what his daughter was doing. Of course he was askance, being sorted into Hufflepuff, openly fraternizing with mudbloods, and picking fights and getting detention was not the Lestrange way. Every summer when she came home from Hogwarts Alice would be punished for her behavior the year before, but negative attention is still attention so she just leaned into it. Long lectures from her father were opportunities to ask more questions, share what she’d learned, and practice arguments she could use on her classmates back at school. She knew if she could stump Roderick Lestrange, then teenagers parotting their parents’ opinions would have no chance. Astraea took a more punitive route, cutting Alice’s pocket money, selling the racing broom she’d saved up to buy, and even intercepting Alice’s correspondences. Instead of allowing herself to be cowed Alice took matters into her own hands, posting her letters from Muchalls and even traveling into Aberdeen to consign some of her clothes so she’d have her own money.

START OF THE WAR

There were several years where mother and daughter were at an impasse. Each attempt Astraea made to shape her daughter into who she should be was met with failure and Alice resisted her mother’s influence at every turn. Eventually it became almost habit for Alice to do the opposite of what Astraea wanted, an instinct as much as a choice. Things reached a tipping point when Alice arrived home from her fourth year and Astraea announced her daughter’s engagement to the rest of the family. It was a last ditch effort at control on the mother’s part, and it completely blindsided Alice. Arguments between Astraea and Alice were not uncommon, but the one that resulted from the proposed engagement was of truly epic proportions. Even Roderick took notice, and he finally put his foot down.

Looking back, Alice does not entirely remember all the details of her last night at home. Words were said that couldn’t be taken back, but what stands out most in her mind is the memory of her father pointing his wand at her. Before the evening was over she’d hastily packed her school trunk with her books, an assortment of clothes, and a handful of jewelry she hoped to be able to pawn for quick money. Typically, Alice liked to be prepared for things and have a plan for how to accomplish her goals, but that wasn’t what happened when she left home. She suddenly found herself alone with no backup plan and no place to spend the night. At her wits end, she showed up at a friend’s doorstep with nothing more than her trunk and a sob story. Luckily for Alice, both her friend and their parents were happy to take her in. They became her new family, giving her a place to stay when she wasn’t at Hogwarts and the kind of love and acceptance that she’d never found with her birth family.

When the time came for her graduation, Alice knew exactly what she was going to do. She’d gone into her fifth year career consultation knowing she wanted to do something where she could change the world, making it a better place. Her head of house had recommended the Wizengamot, and that became Alice’s goal. She liked the idea of writing laws that would shape the world for years to come. She started out small, just one of many all but anonymous clerks, but she was a Hufflepuff to her core; she wasn’t afraid to put in the hard work it would take to achieve her goals. Alice spent two years working for the Wizengamot after graduation, but as the war got worse and worse, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she wanted to do more. So she quit her job and signed up for the auror training program.

PRESENT TIME

The career change was a shock to many people, both those who didn’t know Alice and those who did. Despite getting in trouble for fighting at school, she’d never been a terribly aggressive person, and she certainly didn’t look like an auror. Short and curvy with soft features and a baby face even at the age of twenty, Alice was not intimidating but her fellow trainees quickly learned to underestimate her at their own peril. She’d always been athletic, excelling at any physical activity from ballet to quidditch, and it showed in her dueling. Alice put as much effort into excelling at her auror training as she had working for the Wizengamot, putting in extra hours and usually one of the last to leave the office. By the time she completed her training Alice was one of the most promising new aurors.

While Alice found being an auror far more fulfilling than working for the Wizengamot, it still was not enough. Never a rule follower by nature, Alice chafed under the restrictions of working for the government. It was after about a year of being a full-fledged auror that she was invited to join the Order of the Phoenix. Finally, Alice began to feel like she was doing absolutely everything she could to make the world a better place. Once again she found herself having to earn her place as many of the other Order members were reluctant to trust a Lestrange, but once again she worked tirelessly to wear down all doubt. Soon, when she wasn’t fighting the war officially as an auror she was fighting it unofficially with her fellow Order members. It left her exhausted sometimes, but it was more than worth it to finally feel like she was doing all she could.

Alice was on the front lines at the Battle of Birmingham. She’d been part of the initial strike force, managed to stay on her feet until reinforcements arrived, and was instrumental in rallying the remaining Order members into a draw, instead of being outright routed. It was the kind of performance that would have earned her a medal if she’d been there in an official capacity, but instead she was identified as a vigilante by one of the aurors who arrived in the aftermath and almost lost her job. Alice is no stranger to being punished for doing what she knows to be right, but something about being formally reprimanded and put on probation when what she was doing should have been part of her job stings more than usual. She’s been warned to keep her head down and her mouth shut, but that’s never been in Alice’s nature, and the changes the new Minister of Magic has been implementing certainly aren’t making it easier.

These days, Alice is getting a lot of practice at biting her tongue and she hates it. At work she can’t even fill out a report without her probationary supervisor reviewing it, and she’s been benched by the Order, as well. Although she understands that there are a lot of eyes on her at the moment, having to sit still and wait her turn while the heat dies down is making Alice crazy. She’s always been someone who needs a cause, a project, something to do at the very least, and right now she has none of those things. Even her habit of mentoring the younger aurors is slowing, as more and more trainees decide they don’t want advice from someone on probation. Still, even now, Alice is determined to do everything she can to make things better, no matter how hard it gets.

Wanted connections

Frank Longbottom: since Alice moved to the auror department they’ve become close and Alice has come to consider Frank a good friend. She’s been keeping her more-than-platonic feelings to herself for fear of ruining that.

Rodolphus and Rabastan Lestrange: Alice was never close to her brothers growing up, and now that she’s been disowned they’re as good a strangers. Knowing their parents, she’s certain Rodolphus and Rabastan are on the wrong side of the war and she wouldn’t hesitate to bring them to justice if she had the chance.

The Almost-Fiance: the catalyst for the argument that resulted in Alice leaving home; this character could be someone who is or is not aware of their role in Alice’s disownment.

The Life-Line: when Alice’s parents kicked her out, one of her friends from Hogwarts took her in. This character would be someone Alice was already close to, and now sees as a surrogate sibling.

The Probationary Supervisor: since the Battle of Birmingham, Alice has been on probation. This character would be an auror who has been assigned to observe Alice in the line of duty.

What if one decision changed the course of history? —

At the height of the war in 1979, Regulus Black stole Lord Voldemort’s horcrux and survived an Inferi attack in the Dark Lord’s cave. While he worked tirelessly to destroy the horcrux, the wizarding war continued to rage throughout the country, culminating in the largest battle the magical community had seen to date: the Battle of Birmingham, a tragic fight that left death eaters, order members, and innocent civilians dead.

With no end of the war in sight, Regulus Black turned to Albus Dumbledore for help to destroy Voldemort’s horcrux. Unable to destroy them on his own and suspecting there are more in existence, Dumbledore recruited the Order of the Phoenix to join in what may be their only chance of vanquishing the Dark Lord.

Could a fractured piece of soul be the key to ending the war?

Fractured is an AU Marauders era rp set in the year 1981. There is no prophecy, therefore, Voldemort remains alive and the war continues to divide wizarding kind.

i am mostly looking to write canon characters myself. however, i’m happy to write cc x cc or cc x your oc. but please be comfortable potentially doing cc x cc for my side of things or as potential ships if we decide to do a mumu.

i have a bunch of characters that i’ve been wanting to write for and against including but not limited to: regulus black, sirius black, remus lupin, james potter, evan rosier, barty crouch jr., pandora lovegood, frank longbottom, lucius malfoy, narcissa black, ted tonks, andromeda black, emmeline vance, marlene mckinnon, mary macdonald, and dorcas meadows.

in terms of ships, i have a bunch that i’ve been wanting to write (romantic, platonic, familial, etc.) hence why i would love for this to be a mumu, but again it’s not mandatory. some of the ships i can think of off the top of my head include: rosekiller, jily, jegulus, regulily, dorlene, marylily, pandalily, frank/alice, pandora/xenophilius, nobleflower and of course wolfstar. however there are a few rare pairs that i would be happy to include as well depending on what you’re comfortable with!!

in terms of writing, i am quality > quantity, i’m not a stickler for length or your activity level (i’ll never hound you for replies, take as long as you need). i do write in third person and descriptively. i love to plot and ramble about our ships and the characters ooc. i love making and sending inspo, edits, pinterest boards, etc. back and forth!

past

Born in the middle of the Lestrange Trio, one would have assumed that Alice would have the makings of the perfect pureblood. That was far from the case though. Whilst Alice toed the line, they never really fitted into the pureblood world. Alice was okay at sewing and hosting teas, but really loved to be out in the garden, running around or playing quidditch. It frustrated their mother to no end. Where Alice’s siblings were just as boisterous, the Lestrange parents were left struggling to control their children.

Hogwarts was really the turning point for Alice. They found that being friends with half-bloods and muggleborns was not that bad. Actually, Alice found that they had more in common with them than their pureblooded peers. They started pulling away from her childhood friends, deciding who they wanted to be as a person. Alice knew they didn’t want to be defined by their blood status.

Up until now, the Longbottoms have been able to coast along without picking a side. Their both being purebloods, and Alice being from a high-ranking family have allowed them a certain level of protection. Rodolphus is putting pressure on them to join a side, and pick the right side at that. Alice is starting to feel the tension, and the pressure to pick a side. But right now, in their heart, she knows it is not going to be on the Dark Lord's side, and, selfishly, not quite ready to make that decision, and lose their family.

Barty Crouch Jr. - Alice rarely dislikes someone, and really does not like Barty. Luckily their paths don’t cross that much, and when they do, Alice really needs to hold their tongue.

Rodolphus Lestrange - Tensions are currently running high between the middle and eldest Lestrange children. With the Longbottoms having yet to directly claim a side to the war, Rodolphus has taken it upon themselves to try to sway the couple into following in the Dark Lord’s footsteps.

Harlan Zabini - If their parents had gotten their way, Alice would have ended up married to Harlan. Alice wouldn’t have been happy and is rather relieved to have avoided that predicament. They are still on speaking terms from the little bit of talking that happened when the Lestranges were considering Harlan as an option.

Lily Potter - Unlikely friends due to the Lestranges standing in society, but they were quite close. Alice has been quietly devastated by their friend's disappearance and has kept it hidden from everyone but Frank.

Elianna Goyle - Elianna, Josette, and Alice were a little trio. But then Alice started hanging out with half-bloods and muggleborns. Marrying Frank wasn’t seen as the best decision in their eyes, even if he was a pureblood. Whilst Elianna and Josette haven’t necessarily disowned Alice, the trio isn’t as close as they used to be.
