So I’ve seen the latest Cinderella movie, and as it is my favorite fairy tale, I’m gonna say a few things about it:

First off, this is not really a “Cinderella” movie - Ella isn’t the typical kind and forgiving and gentle girl you see, and while that’s a character choice I didn’t like at first, I came around and now I see that she has those traits, she’s just also funny and awkward and headstrong, and those traits overshadow the traits that make a Cinderella. In most other adaptations of fairytales, this “girlboss” characterization doesn’t work, but it fits very well in this one.

There’s also no real abuse or servitude at the hands of her stepfamily besides half a scene and a couple offhand mentions, and no emotional trauma because of it. If you’re looking for either of these two things that typically characterize Cinderella movies, 2015 Cinderella did it best.

I see a lot of people screaming “girlboss!” and “fake-woke” and “Mary Sue!” And yeah, I get that, but it works. I have a couple things to complain about Billy Porter’s character, but as far as the Ella-entrepreneur thing goes, I like it. Again, for the millionth time, this doesn’t really explore the typical themes of a Cinderella movie. It’s not really a fresh take, premise-wise, but it works. Also, this Ella is not a “not like other girls” character - she performs femininity and is still a strong character.

This is a POP JUKEBOX MUSICAL. I did not know that coming into it, so on the first watch I was underwhelmed.

The costumes and props for extras are all over the place period-wise, but you just gotta get used to the chaos and let it be.

The song choices are also all over the place, and you just have to sit back and let it happen. It ends up more or less working.

I loved the original songs; Million to One was very generic, but lovely nonetheless. Dream Girl stole the show for me - I’ll talk more about it later, but it was incredible.

Somebody to Love was either Queen heresy or simultaneously the most flamboyant, hilarious, and sexy thing I’ve ever seen. I can’t decide.

Really, this movie has some good points to make, but really it’s just a fun movie that’s not to be taken too seriously. Again, if you want that kind of Cinderella movie, go watch 2015 Cinderella.

The running sea monster gag was hilarious. Honestly? Most of the jokes hit their mark. This is a funny, feel-good movie.

The image of Pierce Brosnan screaming “GET OFF MY DAD” is now burned in my brain. I love it.

The whole sleazeball Thomas plotline doesn’t have enough screentime, so it doesn’t have much emotional impact.

Also, why is Ella lying on the bed and being really depressed??? I think in that scene she was supposed to be feeling that way bcs Vivian had just told her the prince was gonna marry that other princess (who is DEFINITELY a lesbian) but that just didn’t play out in the scene. Girl you got a hot queen to go meet and a future to chase!!!

QUEEN Tatiana is the hottest one in the movie. I take no criticism.

Honestly, you can tell that everyone on this movie just had fun. Half the time the background characters, like Robert’s posse, are just straight up vibing, and Camilla and Billy Porter really play off of each other. You can just tell that everyone making this was having a good time. Really living their best lives

I like Gwen a lot. Like, she was played off for laughs, but you connect with her as a character far more than you’d expect, just from the few lines she has in Am I Wrong and whatever other songs she’s in. I wish we had gotten to have more of her, and more interactions with characters that weren’t jokes. I especially wish we could have seen more of her interacting with her brother

I like her line “don’t let them control your life” in Am I Wrong - she says it to her brother, who is waking up to the realization that his life is mapped out by people that want to control him, and he doesn’t want any part of it. This is what she’s lived with for years and years, always being told to sit down and shut up and be a decoration, although she has meaningful contributions. She’s telling him to rebel, because that’s what she’s been doing; she understands how he feels, and she’s encouraging him. Gwen’s a chiche character, but those few lines she has in Am I Wrong give her more characterization and meaning than either of the stepsisters.

Honestly… Billy Porter was advertised as a “nonbinary fairy godmother,” but really he just plays the Gay™️ character, and Corden refers to him with he/him pronouns (obviously not all nb ppl use they/them pronouns, and many use he/him but I still feel like it was false advertising). Fab G was fun nevertheless, although VERY stereotypical gay with a capital G (I mean his first onscreen word is “Work!” Seriously. I’m not kidding. Ugh.) and his costume was absolutely GORGEOUS. Honestly all the characters’ costumes were incredible, and although I wasn’t a fan of the stepfamily’s floral prints, generally all of the costumes were beautiful. Which is fitting for a movie about a dressmaker.

Queen Beatrice was incredible and the dynamic between her and Rowan was just great. I’ve been tired by the “queen is either always dead or just a silent witness there to be nurturing and motherly, and occasionally a plot device with no characterization” trope. So I was so happy to see that Beatrice was an actual character! And can we talk about her rant at Rowan?? “Do you know how hard it is to just sit at your side and smile endlessly, like a decoration? My voice, completely silenced?” Up to that point, she’s only broken out of the “nurturing and motherly silent witness” type that I expected going into the movie with a few lines here and there. But this is where she tells Rowan, and the audience, that she knows what we expected of her, and she knows what she was doing. This is another subtle way the movie uses the stereotypes of a Cinderella movie against the audience.

One line that stood out to me in a very random place was Robert saying “you’ll be dressed by the finest dressmakers!” And Ella saying “I am a dressmaker.” It’s not the fashion she cares about, it’s getting to do what she loves.

Ok now I’m gonna talk IN DEPTH about Vivian, the stepmother

She’s a harsh, stern woman, but she also manages to be dynamic and stereotype-breaking— we’ve all seen the “villain has a tragic backstory” narrative before, but this pulls it off very well.

I really loved how they changed the Stepmother - like, throughout the movie, you keep waiting for her to do something just… needlessly cruel, but she never does. I’ll admit, the scene where she forbids Ella to go to the ball gets pretty close, but that just seems pretty in character for her, plus emotions are running high.

And even in that scene, you can tell that she expected Thomas to choose one of her daughters, not Ella, but she needs the money and security (it’s heavily implied that they’ve fallen on hard times after Ella’s father’s death), so even though it’s a blow to her and her daughters’ pride, she accepts.

I think that’s the beauty of it - you think Vivian is a manipulative, scheming monster, because that’s what you expect of the Evil Stepmother. But you come to realize that Vivian is just a hardhearted woman who’s been exploited and hurt, and she was being genuine throughout the film. When she told Ella she was sorry she hadn’t told her about the betrothal earlier, she meant it. That’s not to say she’s a good person, or that any of these things are excusable; it’s just to say that this film used the stereotypes against the audience.

Not to mention how, when she discovers Ella was the girl at the ball, she begs her on her knees to marry the prince! She’s not angry or jealous, she knows Ella will be happier and they will all be infinitely better off! I noticed how she immediately started being more tender with Ella, calling her family and such, subtle manipulation, and although I found it slightly out of character, because she hadn’t been *actually* manipulative anywhere else in the movie, I don’t think she meant it maliciously or even selfishly.

She admits that she was foolish to think either of her daughters could compete with any of the other princesses, not in a deprecating way towards the stepsisters, but in an “how could they ever compete with such riches, nobility, beauty, and talent in a world they were not born into” way. Also, no one ever makes jokes about Malvolia’s weight, which is something I appreciate, although I would appreciate not having a fat Ugly Stepsister at all, even if they deliberately cast out the Ugly part.

She doesn’t deprecate any of her daughters about things like their talents or looks, only their work/husband-catching skills

Can we talk about how Dream Girl???!?! How harsh and stoic she is in it, and then how close she is to breaking down as she lets everything out on the piano????

“The treasure you found: bury it. The only way out: marry it.” I like how this film highlights that the only (accessible) way out of poverty, abuse, and bad situations for women is to marry out of them. Of course, Ella proves that there is another way: women can make their own way, but it’s worth noting that Ella couldn’t do it on her own, and without her example, other girls probably wouldn’t ever be able to either.

It doesn't matter that Adrien is a sentimonster. They're not gonna kill him off or anything like this doesn't mean that he's worth less because he's. one. of. the. main. characters. And also the audience's favourite!! So nah, all this meta abt how if he's a sentimonster then he's non-human is dumb. He's one of the main characters and him being a sentimonster doesn't make him less human or important at all! He's literally The most important character of the show (in a very unbalanced way w marinette btw who has only half a personality, sadly). And no, the fact that the other sentimonsters were treated like nothing doesn't mean Adrien will. Yes this is an inconsistency but also Astruc is a shitty af writer. He's ADRIEN they're not just gonna disappear him lmao. Imo I think people are projecting their own personal issues w their own parents on ML, something I understand but it's also good to take a look back and see the context. Sentimonster Adrien thing is nothing but a shitty metaphor for abuse in a way children can understand bc that's the audience. Sure, the show could be smarter and more serious but it is what it is.

anon, i know you mean well but i'm gonna be a bitch for a second and say that i obviously don't think the meta i reblogged is dumb, and if you think it is, you should go debate that with the writers of these metas instead of commenting on their posts like that in my askbox.

that being said: the issue isn't exactly adrien's future as a sentimonster main character, the issue is what are the implications of this writing choice, how does it fit into the whole narrative (hello, plot holes), and what message are the writers communicating.

you are very right that adrien being a sentimonster is, at the end of the day, irrelevant. implications for his worth aside, of course he isn't going to get killed. in fact, we might even get an arc in which adrien uses the wish to become a Real Boy. which begs the question: why even make him a sentimonster in the first case? for shock value (i guess for the little kids watching)? for the #drama? when it's possibly the least original and interesting thing to do with the agrestes?

what does adrien being a sentimonster add to his character? well, nothing but more angst and more trauma porn that goes unaddressed. i think s4 proved pretty quickly that adrien and the agrestes are nothing but a Mystery Factor to add an illusion of depth to the show, but at its core, the show isn't interested in helping adrien gain autonomy. the show isn't interested in adrien getting better. the show isn't interested in helping him find a way out of his inferiority complex. the show doesn't see him as a full-fledged character with a ton on his plate - he is a prop, he is the genderswapped love interest, he doesn't matter at the level we want him to matter.

that i was projecting really hard became clear to me when kuro neko aired. [thomas astruc to me: you have a very personal understanding of things] [funny because i described gabriel as abusive in my tweet to him] call me dumb, whatever. but the fact that this entire fandom got fooled for years is hilarious. apparently this show was so vague and wishy-washy that we were being sold one message and understanding something completely different.

i am going to end with something i found in my drafts (i think it's pre-kuro neko) but didn't want to post at the time:

overall, we can conclude that what is happening to adrien in s4 is to break him down until his anger explodes and he becomes more assertive, but a good question is if this the right way to portray an abuse victim gaining independence, as it's completely unrealistic (imo) for children at home, and it's a bizarre path to see, given astruc's insistence that the show works with psychiatrists and child psychologists. instead of adrien meeting people who build his self-worth with kindness and understanding, or instead of adrien being put in situations that ask of him to take a risk that pays off and that builds his confidence, adrien is consistently presented as unappealing to the people important to him when he's chat noir, he's repeatedly shut down for not being a little doll the few times he tries to open up as his civilian self, he never got the chance to build a relationship with the man who chose him to wield one of the two most important miraculouses, and he obviously can't be in situations that demand growth of him if he's struggling to get screentime against temp heroes and third-rate characters.

adrien becoming angry to the point when he snaps on his household members (or ladybug) in the end won't make his situation better in any way; even though he's angry at how he's treated, he's still willing to do what others want of him instead of standing up for his needs; and even if he stands up for himself, gabriel suddenly going "oh, you're right, adrien, you can do whatever you want now" would be laughable, ooc and an insult to the previous episodes that portrayed adrien's situation as abusive. adrien's problems can only be solved when gabriel is out of the picture.

Gloria, Jet-lags and Imps [6x11]

Let’s jump right in:

Kinda love how Kara lamp-shaded addressed the fact she didn't tell the gang about her adventures in the PZ. She’s not wrong, tho.

...what do I want to say about Mxy using what's basically a well-known gay-anthem to tell his tale? I mean, it didn’t lead anywhere. The original song is about freeing oneself, liberation, stepping out of a (gone bad) relationship and moving on, stronger for it - empowerment. The only connection I could make, is that originally it was Nyxly’s aim to just do that (freeing herself and her kind from an oppressor), but in the way Mxy performed it, that part of the parallel was long over before he even reached the chorus. It’s also a popular Karaoke song, tho, so... he chose it because it’s catchy? I’ll try not to overthink it for now. At least, the Superfriend’s reactions were fun.

Nia exiting the elevator, "And what's this Old Stone?" I love it when ppl enter a room / situation and pick up on words that they couldn't have possibly heard. I think cinema sins ding such... Are we to assume, she dreamed Mxy's rendition of ‘I will survive’? Or is the elevator not sound-proof at all? (If it’s the latter, Nia later apparently telling Brainy “in private” between scenes / during the elevator ride about her Nyxly adventures, was a silly thing to do.)

So, "Jared" created the ring Old Stone to rule them all, it got shattered into the Paragons totems? Nyxly needs the totems and to get them she needs a crystal which also belonged to "Jared" - who happens to be Mxy's ancestor, which is why she needs Mxy / his blood, too.

I have one important and incredibly relevant question here, tho...

With the introduced imps and their names... Why’s dude named Jared of all things?!

Not sure what to make about Supergirl paraphrasing a Dirty Dancing quote. "Nobody puts Mxy into a power crystal on my watch." ...is he Baby now? (Seriously, though: Which of the writers thought that was a fitting quote to use in that particular context?)

...now, is the exposition section of the episode over yet?

Sensitive Brainy sensed something was up with Nia. He can relate... Nia doubting Kara would understand, too, is ridiculous. But I get it... insecurities and all. But, I mean, just 5 minutes later Kara announces she wants to save Nyxly despite her wrongdoings. And yet Nia still remains convinced, Kara wouldn’t forgive her own personal mini-me... After having witnessed Kara forgiving Lena for a whole season of the writers being stupid messing up to the nth degree. But I digress, Lena’s Lena.

...how old is Nia meant to be again? Just asking out of completely unrelated curiosity.

F*ck. They really went with NewFoundland...

Imma assume it was an executive choice after realizing they couldn’t find enough actors and actresses with a convincing Irish accent... maybe. Again, no offense to Newfoundland! Just... we got the insinuations of Ireland, not Newfoundland... And truthfully, when I think of magic, Ireland is an easy association. Whereas I only due to this whole debacle learned Newfoundland has Irish ancestry. So, okay, the show forced me to learn something new... I give ‘em that.

An easy journey, she said.

Lena's been off-screen for two whole episodes, Kara announcing at the beginning of ‘Dreamweaver’ [6x09] Lena being “back east” (at least insinuating Lena’s left the west-coast already), which span over at least one full day (feat. a scene at night), and ‘I still rise’ [6x10] at least another a whole day (the whole Nia’s mom back for a day deal). And, now, after at least 48 hours she barely just arrived.

Lemme check how long a regular plane would need to fly from California to NFL......... ... .. .. So... approx. 10 hours with at least one layover.

Yeah, using a private jet made it easier, but apparently also much, much slower...

Or, Lena randomly went some other places / did some sight-seeing in NFL before she decided to finally visit her mother’s hometown... [Either that or the timelines don’t match up and Lena’s scenes are flashbacks of sorts.]

Optimistic and relaxed Lena is a sight to behold. I rewound 3 times, just to enjoy it for as long as possible. We all knew it was going to be short-lived...

Let’s check off a few more items...

OMG, Kara hiding behind Alex at the mere sight of the PZ-projector broke my heart! 😢

"Elisabeth Walsh" is the new 'the one you shall not name'. ...poor Lena. 😭

Oh, so Mxy wants to be Patrick Swayze instead of Baby... gotcha.

KITTY!!! Okay, this must be the best opponent in the history of CWSG.

Despite the horrible CGI, SG using her heat-vision to project a laser-beam to distract the cat had me in (happy-) tears! 🤣

Gotta love the civilians of National City quickly returning to business as usual once the giant cat is gone. Even the police officers looked rather chill...

Nyxly did look fabulous this episode ^^

Andrea being Lena's rock is both great and annoying. I can't fault Andrea. It's just, that we still have to see an on-screen interaction between Lena and Kara and that bugs the heck out of me. I can’t help it. I’m sorry, Andrea.

Nia: "...is my fault." Kara: "Nu, is MY fault!" J'onn: "Stop fighting, kids!" Space-dad has spoken.

Mxy used an LuthorCorp copy machine... and of cos it's faulty. It's not an L-Corp product.

Kara forgiving Nia came as a surprise to her... Oooookay. I mean, the show has been writing Kara a bit inconsistently the past two seasons... so, yeah, maybe being unsure which of her traits apply this week was not such a far stretch...

Maybe it's the hair, but I wished, Florence was played by Alex Kingston.

So, not-Alex-Kingston shows Lena herself with a funny wig and tells her how her mother was still watching her...

If it wasn't for Katie's acting skills (I love her.) I would have already hit my head against the wall repeatedly. Something about these scenes had me constantly cringe and I made it through 5.5 seasons of this show already... Can’t quite put my finger on it, but it was highly distracting from the story that explained Lena’s mom was special even to another witch, where there was domestic abuse, and an accidental murder. Y’know, important stuff, deep-cutting stuff!

At least, poor widddle Lena got some closure there. Elisabeth was a good cookie. And filled with magic. And Lena’s gotta have that ‘spark’, too...

....so... Lena’s gonna stay in NFL for how much longer, to train becoming a witch? Please, just hand her a how-to manual and send her back home, to figure it out on her own, please... (Yes, that would be horrible decision-making, but I need her back with the team!)

On to the finish line:

So... Mxy IS Nyxly's brother? Wait, that doesn’t sound right... then Nyxly would have the same blood... Did I miss something? Can someone explain, please? Or is he her ex, and that’s where his rendition of “I will survive” makes sense?

Hnn... I can't help, but think Kara's speech for Nyxly was 85% based on her experiences with Lena in s05.

Awww... he said "stronger together"... Mxy... I hope, you'll be okay!

Lena believes in magic now. And I absolutely love how Lena wants to science magic XD

...but apparently magic isn’t science that hasn’t been explained yet, but parallel... powers? concepts? ether strings?

Nyxly has a loyal henchman now. Which was a bit heavy-handed. Took way too much of screen-time, so it better leads to something interesting.

And Kara is on a warpath now. Wooooot! Girl’s got enough.

...what else?

Did I miss a third Patrick Swayze hint / quote / mention? I learned, these things come in threes... Y’know, basic writing rules...

I guess, for once the episode title was meant to be taken literally, Mxy popping up between characters, to try and help. (I need in-show footage, of Mxy sneaking up on ppl, without his powers, on all fours / crouched, just to get the desired effect.) I mean, I’ve never really watched Malcom, but wasn’t he like what Mxy usually is? A bit of a trouble-maker, prankster, chaos-ensuing wherever he goes? ...well, in that case, the episode title didn’t hold up, as Mxy’s scenes were not fun or really goofy. Yes, there was some superficial humor, but just to serve Mxy dealing with not being able to use his powers, which in turn was only barely scratched at (although it turned out to be his final character development crisis, appreciating not having powers and - in turn - facing consequences for once). Again, a whole lot going on in the episode, so a lot of that may have ended up on the cutting-room floor.

...where’s Kelly? Secretly adopting a kid, maybe?

...Kara’s still a reporter, right? I mean, whenever it serves the immediate plot, yes? ...Not even a throw-away line, that she has to pop up at CatCo for appearances sake? Since Andrea is already upset with her AND looking into her friends’ identities? At least, Kara should take a peek to make sure Andrea hasn’t uncovered anything yet... No?

speaking of ur cass playlist hc...reminds of the time (yesterday) i found 2 playlists randomly on spotify from the same user. one was abt 3 hours of instrumental/classical "dark" & "nostalgic" music. the other almost 11 hours of nothing but hardcore bass/synth/electronic music. just an incredible tightrope act to put on in public. the synth one was also called like "psalms for synth sluts" which is Also incredible

bunch of little things from the comics that i like to compare with the mcu to figure out what i would like to see going forward:

it's kind of a bare minimum petition in a way. i'd call this a comparative essay but it's too messy to be an essay so, let's just start LOL... im not actually that well versed in comics im more like "oh yeah i dig this" and run w what i like

first off sam in the mcu i actually really love what they've done with him. might be because i can't help but love sam since he's so damn charming. i guess one glaring difference between comics sam and movies sam is the way they carry themselves—compared to mcu sam, comics sam has been doing this for decades. he is rougher around the edges while having his big heart anyway, which is a really nice contrast and makes sense given how long he's been working as falcon lol. so what are the differences that can be found/how did the mcu adapt some of sam's comic traits?

he's a social worker and a community organizer! he also runs a veteran support group, not that different from sam being a counselor in the mcu. in tfatws it's shown that sam helps sarah whenever he's around in delacroix, in turn helping out the whole community—showing that they're (the wilsons) are very loved by all the members in their community, and this is a very important thing! a connection to a community! a purpose for a character to want to fight for others, to have something they love and protect and make it believable at the same time. it's lovely.

sam's heart being too big and moving people / seeing the best in others carries on super well in the mcu. everyone's familiar with sam giving shelter to stevenat in tws, sam never wanting to fight karli, sam being kind to john, etc. it's a lovely detail and one of my fave things about him so that's also super satisfying :)

so now in terms of sam wilson as a character what would i like to see more? it already started during tfatws when he confronted all those politicians on live tv but cap sam makes the point of not remaining quiet and speaking up, something that usually costs him public approval but he remains strong and tall about what he believes in. not being afraid to take a political stance despite people wanting him to stay neutral.

sam's struggles on wanting to do what's right by him and at the same time having some struggles according to how he's perceived by the public because it's always going to be an important conversation to have and again, this character is not one to shy again from stances like these. when tfatws was coming out lots of people were uncomfortable by how “political” and by the race conversations that took place in the series. i don't think they'd shy away from it anyway but still something i truly wish to see how they handle. esp with a not-white team working on it heh

more moments of sam being truly sure of who he is and killing it bc i love him

sam's connection to his family and how they influence him to be who he is, and sam's own little family composed of joaquín and shaun and redwing (currently just joaquín and redwing in the mcu) to have his own support system besides the guys we already know

just. sam :)

moving onto bucky, mcu bucky is... kind of starting to be his own character at last? like i remember watching tfatws ep 1 and going OMG HE HAS A PERSONALITY so it was a big deal. so it's a bit of a clean slate, right? so here are the things i wish the mcu would implement for bucky but i highly doubt they will but i love to dream anyway:

ideally seeing where the character is right now they could, yes, take an approach to winter soldier 2018 since it fits bucky's current character arc of learning to forgive himself and try to do good.

really want the mcu to stop pushing the white wolf narrative and trying to erase the winter soldier from bucky, seeing as how ed brubaker is responsible for bringing bucky back as the winter soldier and how he feels re:mcu bucky, i feel like the least they could do is let him still keep the winter soldier, just. reclaim the name like in the 2018 run, etc

bucky is a loving character. he just loves so damn much. if comics sam is sharp around the edges but soft inside, bucky is soft around the edges but firm inside. he's not afraid to call sam and nat his best friends when they're captured specifically to lure bucky out

he feels so much for people, he acknowledges the burden and the pain he carries to do better and take back his mistakes, and tries to take care of everybody without ever putting himself first, and endures So much.. talk about being a meow meow

super good with kids somehow?

please mcu give him friends who love him that's all i actually ask from you. bucky is loyal to a nauseating degree. even when sam and nat get captured it was literally illegal for him to break them out but what did he do? break the law, of course,

he's hilarious. for real trust me he's hilarious. like there's something wrong with him (affectionate)

so to sum it up: just dont be afraid to make him kind and loving bc thats where bucky shines most. as for the sambucky dynamic in general i just want them to still be themselves. just like this :)

danny phantom episode 4-7 Thoughts: (under a readmore because, these got kinda long!)

-the outfit danny had to buy for dash's party. CLASSIC 2000S i cannot stop laughing. And also showing up to the party and everyone is dressed like the trio is hilarious. and further proof that everyone looks good dressed goth.

-dash has a closet full of cute lil bear plushies?? LOVE that. adorable. also his response to danny trashing his room fighting a ghost was SO valid if somone BROKE MY BED IN HALF ID BE PISSED TOO.

-technus being like 'oh smart, u should be a tutor!' then later being like 'forget tutor, be a teacher!' :) supportive king <3 I also really like his upgraded suit/design. AND SPOCK CAMEO??? HELLO??

-sam being rich explains a lot about her, actually.

-I know the moral of the episode was supposed to be 'dont ditch your friends for popular people/spend a lot of money on clothes that arent You to Fit In'. but tbh. it wouldve been easy for danny to have been like 'well, okay, ill come but only if my friends can!' but I get. that hes 14. so. not a lot to say there.

(I didnt go to hs so I might be wrong, if I am ignore this...) freshmen are usually 14-15, could just be a case of them not turning 15 yet but they will sometime in the school year (I say they because tucker said he was 14 too)? I know the show has 3 seasons, so by the end of it will they be older? thatd be neat but usually cartoon characters stay the same age...I love shows where you can see the characters age and grow up, though...three seasons seems like a long time to spend on like, 1 year...

the poets and their fav marvel characters/movies !!!

ok honestly i have no idea if any of this makes sense lol but i hope it’s comprehendible. also i have not had the time or resources to watch any of the new mcu era, which is why i didn’t include any of it. and if you have any other ideas of which characters and movies the poets would like comment them bc i want to see what you guys think hehe !! <3 sending love and hugs to anyone who needs it (and anyone who doesn’t, too)

neil: neil adores comic books. he used to sneak them when he was younger, taking breaks from his summer school homework to read them (he has a stash in his room that his father still hasn’t found). there is no doubt in my mind that neil wouldn’t be head over heels for spiderman, are you kidding ?? most definitely tried to climb walls or hang upside down when he was little. desperately wishes he could come up with his own chemical equation for web fluid. he’d completely immerse himself in the fact that there are three different eras to depict and analyze, too, having a very heated debate with charlie and meeks about who the best spiderman is. also really wants to reenact the upside down kiss with todd

neil’s fav movies (he can’t pick a fav) would be: the og spiderman, the amazing spiderman, and spiderman: homecoming (likes spiderman: 3 purely for shits and gigs)

todd: i feel like todd really likes comics (would spend his summers collecting them and reading in his room while his parents took jeff to sports camps/summer camps). he’d love scarlet witch because todd really loves to see her character growth through the films (coming to understand her powers and utilizing them accordingly), and also just admires how badass she is (”she’s so powerful and she doesn’t even know it until she faces hardship. oh, i love her so much”). upon hearing this explanation, neil couldn’t contain a smile because todd doesn’t even realize that he’s the exact same way (’: todd also likes bucky because he’s “so cool” and his metal arm is “sick” hehe (and he really loves the bond that bucky and steve have)

todd’s fav movie would probably be captain america: tfa because he likes seeing young steve rogers of course, but also because todd admires his strength (sees himself in pre-serum steve and hopes that one day he will become his own version of post-serum steve (: ). also like avengers: aou bc that’s when he’s really first introduced to scarlet witch (watches the post-credit scene from captain america: tws just to see wanda and pietro)

charlie: charlie never really read comic books, but he loves the mcu !! first of all, charlie can’t decide anything ever, so why would picking his fav superhero be any different; peter quill, iron man, or black widow. he’d like peter quill because “he’s unapologetically himself and completely hilarious,” and would absolutely dress as starlord for halloween at least once (probably more than once). as for iron man, charlie just likes how cool tony stark is and how he invented a suit that could fly (”there are so many likable qualities about him !!” he’d say, to which cameron would reply, “like what, the fact that he’s a womanizer, a pompous ass, or that he’s seemingly too smart for his own good ?” and charlie would just smirk, “all of the above”). for black widow, it’d be pretty simple (“she’s so badass. i can’t tell if i want to do her or be her”). claims his honorary mentions would be korg, rocket, and groot

charlie’s fav movies are guardians of the galaxy vol. 1 and vol. 2 because they’re “fun.” likes thor: ragnarok because it also has fun vibes.

meeks: meeks LOVES comic books to begin with, and collects them avidly, but dr. strange and the entire idea surrounding his powers/strengths ?? the ability to bend time ?? if that doesn't sound right up meeks’ alley, idk what does. there are clearly a lot of things that meeks will geek out over unapologetically, but dr. strange is one of those things that he just will not shut up about, ever (”it’s just so AWESOME”). desperately wishes that sling rings were real. also gushes with todd about bucky’s metal arm, going off on a tangent about the science behind the “rigidity flexibility ratio.” can also go on for hours about the quantum realm (:

therefore, meeks’ favorite mcu film is dr. strange and he would be completely eager and buzzing for dr. strange in the multiverse of madness. also likes antman (:

pitts: also a comic book geek hehe. and i'm sensing that pitts really likes thor. thor is pretty much just a dorky, goofy tall dude (like pitts, just with... a lot bigger biceps LOL). finds a lot of the same things funny in the movies that thor laughs at. getting into thor gets him into norse mythology, where he’d spend hours searching for/reading books on it at the welton library (meeks would have to come find him because he’d been gone for that long). wishes he could grow facial hair that nicely, and even attempted to once, but charlie shut that down real quick HAHA (”i'm not going to stop making fun of how ridiculous you look until you shave”). becomes a huge einstein rosen bridge geek, learning all there is to learn about that (and norse everything).

pitts’ favorite movie is thor: ragnarok (”it’s the best out of the three”), and he really doesn’t enjoy thor: the dark world (almost has a vendetta against it, “why did they feel the need to dye his beard and his eyebrows ??”)

cameron: surprisingly knows a lot about comics and the mcu ? his fav character is captain america due to steve rogers’ unflinching morals and standards (cameron began to to veer a teeny tiny bit away from cap, though, when he began to rebel in captain america: civil war, but he still loves him). really likes the historical aspect behind captain america (wwii and the 1940s). he and pitts absolutely had a meltdown when steve lifted mjolnir and almost got kicked out of the movie theater for their reaction (”NO FUCKING WAY, NO FUCKING WAY !! I KNEW IT. PITTSIE, I KNEW IT !!” which is super uncharacteristic for cameron, but he doesn’t fuck around when it comes to cap). got in an actual argument with charlie after captain america: civil war arguing that tony was in the wrong (”steve was doing the right thing because he was following his moral code !! even if he was breaking rules, it still made sense,” and charlie would just laugh, “you say that, but i was just following my moral code when i made the phone call to god and you didn’t find that funny,” “you’re an idiot, charlie”). also really likes nebula bc he relates to her in the fact that she never felt like she belonged/fit in.

his father served in wwii, so captain america: tfa has a really special place in his heart (he’s seen it so many times he can cite the movie as it goes along)

knox: knox knows the least about superheroes/comics, but still likes to tag along to the movies when the poets go to a premiere. he really likes black widow (”she’s just really pretty, okay?”) and hulk (”he just smashes stuff, HAHA ! how awesome is that ??”). even though he’s not very knowledgable about the mcu or marvel itself, he loves to listen to meeks about everything. almost always asks questions throughout the entirety of the movie (”knox, shut up, we’ll explain after it’s over !!”). thanos really freaked him out tbh; the idea of something like the snap happening dialed his whole “carpe diem” thing to eleven lol.

knox’s fav movie is the first avengers because the amount of conflict isn’t as bad as the other avengers movies (”i like seeing them work together, it makes me sad when they argue and disagree).

i'm literally putting this under a break and organizing it into categories bc it's absurdly long

A COLLECTION OF BEN AND LESLIE HEADCANONS

PRE-RELATIONSHIP/S3

basically canon but leslie definitely had a crush on a young benji wyatt and followed the story religiously for the first couple months before she started college

ben is only slightly jealous leslie had ann go out with chris to try and get more money for the parks budget rather than leslie asking him out with the same goal. he knows it’s insane, unethical, and illogical but he’s still excited that he gets to spend the night with her on a date plus two other people even if it is to accuse her of bribery.

ann realizes early on that leslie was attracted to ben and teases her mercilessly about it. she thinks it’s absolutely hilarious that leslie wants to make out with "mean ben.” after april and andy’s wedding, she realizes it's more than just attraction and she lays off.

before ben can even think rationally about what he’s doing, he’s in line at bed, bath, and beyond with a crock pot in his arms, calling stephanie to ask her to send him their family’s chicken soup recipe

ann knew ben liked her from the beginning and was totally positive when she ran into him in the hospital asking for leslie’s room number while holding jj’s waffles and a tub of homemade soup.

ben realizes he’s falling in love with leslie when he is at city hall with her until 3am one night trying to budget for the amount of cotton candy machines she wants for the harvest festival. in his exhaustion, he naively believes her when she tells him she’ll go home in a bit so he leaves. he never gets a text from saying she made it home so he stops at jj’s the next morning and brings a takeout container of waffles and a coffee complete with an outlandish amount of whipped cream and sugar to the parks department. he finds her asleep in the conference room. he starts trying to convince sweetums to donate more cotton candy machines that afternoon.

chris had to have known ben liked leslie. he’s not an idiot. in the deleted scene from their wedding, they read out emails from their “tumultuous first week in pawnee” and chris writes to ben saying, “why are you so focused on leslie knope?” ben replies saying, “i’m not. whatever. shut up.” there’s no way chris is this oblivious. ben takes her out for a beer. ben pays out of pocket for a children’s performer to help her out. ben shows up on chris and ann’s date just because he thinks leslie might be there. chris can’t be this dumb. but when they take the city manager jobs in pawnee, he knows it can’t happen so he cuts ben off when he starts to ask about dating someone in city hall. he cracks down on the rule in front of leslie after the tom incident to hammer it in. he starts setting ben up on a bunch of dates to try and head it off. he sends them to indianapolis for the little league pitch because, realistically, he knows they’re the best bet for success but makes sure to interrupt their dinner and invites them to his apartment to continue to run interference the rest of the night. after their fights in 4.06-4.08, he hopes he won’t have to worry anymore. the next work day, they come into his office looking nervous and happy and he knows he’s about to lose the partner and best friend that’s been by his side for the past decade.

april and andy knew they were secretly dating. it went unspoken aside from a few implicit teasing remarks from april and a few suggestive attempted high fives from andy but leslie assured ben they wouldn’t tell anyone despite their ostensible behavior.

BREAK UP

ben had commissioned the li’l sebastian plush for leslie after he had died but the toy shop didn’t finish it until after they broke up. he felt bad not going to pick it up so he did despite not being able to give it to her. he kept it for all those months and sometimes thought about getting rid of it but could never bring himself to do it.

when leslie made personalized copies her books for her friends with individualized annotations and notes in the bylines, she had two copies for ben. there was one that she gave him during their breakup that was very simplified and watered down where the note basically just said “i’m really glad you decided to stay in pawnee.” then there was a second copy that she kept while they were split up that was totally covered in notes and random thoughts she couldn’t say during their time apart. she gives him that copy when they get back together and it may or may not be the best gift he’s ever received.

april was much less abrasive with them during the break up because she’s a sweetheart and wants her friends to be happy.

the first time leslie admitted she was in love with him was during a long night of drinking and crying at ann’s house

ben craved the taste of sugar during their breakup because he got used to tasting the sweetness when he kissed her

ben found himself unable to sleep at night without the sound of leslie talking in her sleep to comfort him

april texted leslie the night of the halloween party to let her know that ben and andy were at the hospital after a fight and everything was fine and she didn’t need to worry. leslie was mad at andy for a few days after and he couldn’t figure out why.

the only photo in ben’s bedroom was of himself, leslie, and li’l sebastian at the harvest festival. if he got caught staring at it and crying, he would just say he missed li’l sebastian so much.

april and andy started having star wars and star trek movie nights to try and cheer ben up

DOMESTIC

ben and leslie got in the habit of having weekly game nights with april and andy during the campaign since they were all basically living together. it became a tradition that kept going as often as they could make it happen, even after the kids were born. they try to have game night at least once a month. april pretends to hate it.

one of my absolute favorite ideas about them is that she sleeps much better when he’s around to keep her grounded. after they get together for good, she starts getting closer to 5 hours of sleep a night.

another favorite involving leslie’s sleeping: ben is typically accustomed to tuning out incoherent nonsense that she babbles in her sleep but she also has some of her best ideas when she’s not busy trying to focus on a million different things. when he hears her coming up with legitimately good ideas or making speeches or having solid debate arguments, he takes out the notebook he keeps in his nightstand to record her thoughts and quotes. he revisits and revises the notes to strengthen her statements and make them more professional and less rambling but makes sure to keep her distinct voice apparent in them.

ben prefers pancakes to waffles but he will go to the grave with that secret

this isn’t a headcanon because nbc posted it but one of ben’s holidays on leslie’s calendar is watch synchronization day which is the day they celebrate syncing their watches to, as leslie puts it, “always be in harmony, like our hearts” which is just one of the sweetest fucking things in the world

leslie makes ben read and watch all the harry potters because he didn’t get into them when he first tried. ben is much more of a success than ann. she buys him a ravenclaw scarf for christmas.

their first fight as a couple was a historical debate gone awry

since ben clearly has some affinity for custom stuffed animals, he has some made for the triplets.

they’re both dog people but they adopt a cat because sonia and stephen beg for one and it does fit their busy lifestyle much better. they love the cat. they get a dog when the kids are older and life is slightly less hectic.

they both love striped shirts and sweaters so much that they have to make a conscious effort to avoid wearing them on the same day and matching

leslie makes sweets and bakes desserts while ben typically handles cooking the actual meals

BASED ON EPISODES, QUOTES, AND THROWAWAY LINES

i always loved the ann/ben dynamic in bus tour because there’s been such an obvious shift in ann’s attitude towards him in this episode. maybe it’s because she and tom just broke up and she just turned chris down again and she’s frustrated with relationships but i think it’s her realizing ben isn’t going anywhere. since the campaign is winding down, she realizes that things aren’t gonna go back to the way they were because ben is now part of this and he’s clearly in it for the long haul. ann’s definitely jealous that ben is just as important to leslie as she is and she now knows she’s never gonna get that full attention back. ann sits ben down to have a real “don’t you dare hurt her” speech after this ep and before win, lose, or draw. this is when he tells ann he wants to marry her.

they discover they both adore the princess bride after ben says “as you wish” to her one night and after that it becomes their movie.

the wildflower mural becomes a thing between them when ben says he considered that to be their first date, prompting leslie to tell him what the mural means to her.

ben puts banjo boogie bonanza on one of the mix cds he gives leslie at the beginning of their relationship

harrison ford movie nights start after they both reveal they had a crush on him as a kid. ben was obsessed with han solo and leslie was into indiana jones’ whole history teacher vibe.

they basically hate each other’s taste in music and stop exchanging mix cds once that becomes apparent that they aren’t gonna find much common ground. they both love tom petty, al green, and etta james and music in that vein though.

ben makes leslie watch game of thrones just to try to explain why he’s called her khaleesi. she gets into it, not so much because of the show itself, but because of how passionate her boyfriend is about it.

they start learning basic french during the s4 campaign because they think it will be useful to have a basic multilingual vocabulary for their political careers and because leslie confesses she has always dreamed of seeing paris. they study spanish next.

ben makes leslie watch the star wars prequels just so he can complain to her during them. he doesn’t think she’s paying attention and then he reads about midichlorians in the paper.

ann is also in on ben’s plan to sneak vegetables into leslie’s waffles.

they will sometimes jokingly refer to themselves as the “dream team” or “dynamic duo” because, despite chris’s absurdity, it’s true

i’m open to literally any origin of this because no matter what it’s perfect but i like to think that “i love you and i like you” started at some point in season 4 when, at some point, leslie went “i like you” and ben replied “you like me?” “mhm” “hm just like me?” “yes i like you. i love you and i like you. both.” “mmm i love you and i like you too”

i barely even register some of these things as headcanons since they just live so solidly in my brain

I’m just tired of the endless “die, deku/out of my way” yelling, I like watching Bakugou going to parties and amusement parks and doing silly stuff, too. Like I’ve said before, pride won’t ever let him change the way he behaves with Midoriya, even when they’re doing “great”. If he was the one, it wouldn’t have mattered, no matter how tough you are, and it wouldn’t take that long. I also don’t think they’re that kind of relationship, like they move each other for sure, sometimes, yeah (not always in a good way tho), but be together in a relationships? Can’t imagine that. Like not all rivals have the rivals to lovers dynamic, no matter what ppl say. But I get the shipping, bc 1stly these two are playing too huge of a role in each other’s lives, 2ndly Midoriya is obsessed with him and Bakugou obsessed with him too (just in a bad way lmao) and 3rd ppl want that “enemies to lovers” dynamic, since many love it (me included, when it done right and progresses right), so they’re trying to write that “to lovers” bridge, that just doesn’t fit here in my opinion, simply bc Bakugou won’t be soft with Midoriya, like ever in a way, you’d want, and I don’t think it’s possible for them to go there.

Tododeku on the other hand, 1stly they also play too huge of a role in each other’s lives, 2ndly Midoriya is obsessed with him too and Todoroki is lovingly obsessed with him in return, 3rdly they are also rivals to lovers, and I have no problem imagining the second part, it won’t be OOC, 4thly Midoriya when he’s with Todoroki is my fav Midoriya, he’s happy, he is cocooned and he’s badass af (and like when he told Endeavor to fuck off or yelled at Todoroki “the fuck are u doing?” xD are still the best), 5thly Midoriya forgets about Bakugou, when he’s with Todoroki a lot and it’s just funny to me, 6thly they healed each other so nicely, I can’t not be into that, 7thly when they’re together I have like 0 worries, idk I’m like “he will catch him” anyways haha, Bakudeku just don’t give me this vibe. It’s like yeah, they won’t let each other die, but it’s always this chaos of “out of my way”, “I don’t want your help” and “let me punch you before I punch the villain” that I’m just “oh for god’s sake, pls bring in Kirishima and Todoroki so we could just go home, it could’ve been solved in 2 minutes” lmao. Etc, etc.

Tododeku just have too many winning points over bakudeku for me, same with kiribaku over bakudeku, even tho I 100% get bakudeku as a ship ofc. Also idk whether things would be different if Todoroki wouldn’t exist in the equation, but the moment I saw that s2 scene where Bakugou started yelling and Todoroki just ignored him and was like “was Midoriya always this good?”, there was no going back to me XD. Like they both obviously see that Midoriya is wonderful, but only one reacted to that in a way that I wanted. And I’m a sucker for the ships who don’t give a fuck and like “yeah, I find him amazing and everyone should know that”. Todoroki is also one of those guys, who if you give them the much needed love, they’ll return it tenfold with a forever devotion. And all of my fav ships are like that: Yullen, Rinharu, Mikayuu, Wangxian, Akakuro, etc. They’re like “well, I ain’t an idiot to let someone this precious go”, you know lol

On the other hand, when it comes to Kirishima, Bakugou can do all kind of ridiculous thing I wouldn’t imagine he would do to keep him or make him happy, you know. Kirishima is also the only one, who can put his arm around Bakugou without it being cut off, so I don’t make the rules here lol.

So it’s not like I can’t stand bakudeku, more of like can’t imagine this work, to me it’s easier to imagine todobaku in a relationships, but not bakudeku lolz.

But when it comes to makoharu, I just have a huge problem with it and I will never get it. Bc they don’t bring anything good in each other like AT ALL, I don’t even understand what kind of relationships this is from their shipper point of view; they give each other nothing, and one of them is totally in love with someone else and wants a future with him. And that someone also head over heals with him and also wants a future with him. And I hate how 99,9 % of mh fans don’t give a fuck about Haru or Rin whatsoever and just ignore their character’s everything. Bc Makoto. I’m also like if you love him so much, the fuck would you want him to be with Haru anyways, dude doesn’t reciprocate, like at all. I’m at confusion, like name good points of this ship and what good can they do for each other characteristically. There is none, it’s like a damn swamp. Like usually I can give my notp some points, but this is like... they’re both no good for each other... like... why would anyone even want this idk. Don’t tell me “for the childhood friends” one-sided dynamic, like why won’t you also ship Shion with Safu then, like even he seemed more invested in that, than Haru in makoharu lol.

Even if you think of them from the point of view of “the two who are always walking together” ships, that are everywhere nowdays (even tho since Haru moved to Tokyo, he was always with Asahi instead), but even if... those kind of ships are usually at least make each happy and are enough for each other. Haru on the other hand, when he doesn’t have Rin, he is walking with Makoto like a ghost, not even caring if he’s talking next to him AND he’s getting ennoyed by him. Like explain, how someone’s shipping them romantically. It’s been showed like 20 times, that with Rin, but without Makoto, he can be perfectly happy, without Rin tho, he never is.

Also someone explain, what exactly is the point of splitting up two characters, who are happy together, make each other the best versions of themselves and want to be together whole-heartedly? Like I know many start shipping smth, bc the relationships are better in the other pairing, for example, but this is like... definitely not the case here. Like what exactly is missing in rinharu, that makoharu has? Lack of progression and mutual inspiration?

So yes, if you’re into rinharu, totally finish Free! They’re like doing sooo incredible and holy shit they’re inspiring, I mean, look, they’re now the tokyo olympics ambassadors, like how many of yall gay ships reached that? you can’t miss out on them, and also they’re so hilariously romantic, they literally made a wish to swim with each other since they were 13 and did everything to get each other there, I’m.. you’re lying, if you didn’t cry watching them as chibies making wishes on a star and watching them now. One of the most wonderful development in my opinion. Like who would’ve thought back in s1, that we’ll get Haru yelling on top of Rin about how he made him want a future with him, def not me lmao and now all the olympics boyfriends fanfiction are true, I mean, idk what to say anymore. I miss them so much, I can’t wait for the movie :D

1/4 the thing about Donna is that it was after Claudia died that she was probably vulnerable enough to fall for the 'I adopt you as my child so now you have a family and i'll give you a 'gift'' shtick of Miranda's. Claudia died in 1996 aged 9 and was either her sister or her child. The Gardener says 'Mistress Donna' and 'Miss Claudia' so she was already head/last heir of the Beneviento estate.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that Claudia's death must have been the final hit for Donna. Losing her parents was one thing, but it's something all of us will have to deal with in our lives at some point (hopefully a late one). Losing a younger sibling/child when they're 9 is undoubtedly tragic. Considering Claudia's age I immediately assumed she was Donna's younger sister; I saw Donna as quite young herself, unless she was super young when she had Claudia, if Claudia is her child. But in any case, her death must have caused her even more distress, so it was the perfect situation for Miranda to swoop in and claim herself as Donna's "mother". Especially considering that Miranda's "gift" allowed Donna to create the perfect friend; Angie, the doll that was gifted to her by her father, and whose personality she could shape exactly the way she wanted.

2/4 as for nonaging+alcina, i raise you: her daughters. 3 young women were experimented on w cadou and as a result they were 3 amnesiac carnivorous swarms of flies that went back to looking pre-experiment. Then got adopted. And stayed looking like that for years up to the game's events. As for Heisenberg, he says 'decades of being forced to serve her' so shouldn't he have said 'my whole life' (he's dramatic/showman enough that he would have) or reference to lifelong slavery or 'MM raised us'?

Good point about the daughters! I hadn't even thought of them! But yeah iirc one of the diary notes you find in the game is dated at around 1958 or something, and it mentions Daniela, so all three of them were definitely there at least since then, non-aging and all. And I think though Alcina ended up adopting them, Miranda also oversaw the experimentation on them, so it's a good point towards proving that symbiosis with the Cadou pauses one's aging completely.

And yeah, Heisenberg would definitely be as dramatic as to say something like that, especially considering how oversharing he was about everything. It was like he was seeing Ethan run around his factory, being the only intelligent creature around that wasn't on Miranda's side, and he just unloaded all his burden because Ethan was the very first to be able to comprehend it and not rat him out to Miranda (who, ironically enough, already knew all about Heisenberg's wish to rebel against her). And Ethan was just like "Dude I honestly don't give a shit" XD

But yeah the way he says "She took me. Took us. To be her children." He sounds disgusted and like, he's rightfully so but the kind of disgust fits a bit more the idea of Miranda kidnapping a grown-ass man, experimenting on him with the hope of reviving her daughter through him, and when that failed she just claimed him as her "son". It sounds more like that and less like a rebellious son who, after growing up, realized what a fucked-up caretaker he had as a child.

3/4 MM had established herself/met Spencer/forbade people from going+getting anything from outside the village by the late 50s/early 60's that's why there are trucks and tvs and radios; and the Duke being the one to sell newspapers to villagers + being Karl's informant about bsaa+the stuff that happened in america (this is from the game director Sato who said heisenberg isn't a nazi and the fanservice of 'boulder punching asshole' here polygon . c o m / interviews / 22453564)

4/4 and now that i think more on it, MM just grabbed the last descendants of the most historically powerful houses, literally the founding ones (except alcina) to have even more influence within the village huh. timeline is wonky for sure. but then again all re canon is a bit wonky. Tumblr pls don't eat this one.

I honestly fucking love the design in the village because it's so well made to showcase that Miranda had cut off any connection from outside and inside the village. People on the outside didn't know it existed (aside from whoever it was in BSAA who made sure the mold man and his mold daughter would be relocated in driving distance to it and its leader with an obsession over a certain megamycete), and people on the inside were stuck with technology of mid-20th century and zero contact with the outside world. Even the Duke seems to adapt to it style-wise even though he obviously can contact the outside world.

And yeah, from the very little we see of the villagers, they seem to have felt very obedient to the Lords and Miranda, even though people like Elena were terrified of Castle Dimitrescu (with good reason!). And that probably was because Miranda made sure to have control over the right influences in the village.

Also, I love the phrase "the fanservice of "boulder-punching asshole'". Out of context it just sounds even more hilarious.
