Canadian union actors have been locked out of commercial work by union-busting agencies for over 500 days.
Because a lot of people don't really understand what is happening here, I'm going to take a moment to talk about what a lockout is.
A lockout is like the opposite of a strike: in a strike, workers withhold their labour until employers agree to their demands for improved conditions, while in a lockout employers essentially starve workers of work-- and by extension, crucially, wages-- to force them into accepting unacceptable conditions.
In the context of a factory, it might look like literally shutting down the factory because the owner can afford to simply eat the short-term loss while they sit and wait for the workers to grow desperate. Or they may bring in what are euphemistically referred to as "replacement workers". You may know them by the more familiar term: scabs. Those who are willing to put up with more for less, and in so doing worsen labour conditions across the whole industry. This is economically advantageous to the employers, and they can just sit there in comfort while they wait for the union and its members to break.
A lockout is a cruel power play in what is already an unequal relationship. It is intentional infliction of desperation and psychological distress.
The Institute of Canadian Agencies' lockout of ACTRA members has been going on for more than 500 days. It has intentionally inflicted more than 500 days of psychological distress and existential threat on thousands of people. And in the midst of this the ICA has done little but employ DARVO strategies (deny, attack, reverse victim and offender), when it has initiated this essentially in protest of not being given the freedom to slash union commercial actors' compensation by 80%. ACTRA has been ready and willing to bargain this whole time, but the ICA insists it's ACTRA holding its own members down.
The ICA's client companies are hugely recognised brands whose CEOs take home untold millions every year in salaries while the average ACTRA commercial actor makes well under 10k a year. Professional actors' work is important and needed-- if it wasn't the agencies wouldn't be bringing in scabs-- and yet they are forced into conditions where they literally cannot live. They cannot afford to put a roof over their heads and food on the table in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis.
PLEASE share this and let union actors know you stand with them. Boycott these companies who hire union-busting agencies. Write to them and let them know why. This fight has been long and demoralising, and folks are exhausted and sad, and given all the attention that has rightly been on the striking WGA and SAG-AFTRA members (with whom ACTRA has been rallying together in solidarity), their Canadian sibling union needs your solidarity and support too.

apparently a bunch of ppl on social media are trying to call for a boycott of rick riordan because of this statement in a blog post:
Becky and I are just back from a busy weekend with events at the Boston Book Festival and New York Comic-Con.
Before I get into that, however, some words to acknowledge the ongoing horrors in Israel and Gaza. As many of you may know, I am no longer on social media. My accounts post only updates on my books and related projects. I do not read posts, reply to posts, or share my thoughts about world events on those forums. That doesn’t mean I don’t have strong feelings and reactions. It means I am offline as completely as possible, except for the occasional blog post like this one.
I will say this: Over the last eighteen years, I have received many fan letters from young readers, both Israeli and Palestinian, who often told me that my books helped them escape the fear, grief and anxiety they were dealing with at the time. Some had lost family members to violence. Some were writing while in the distance they could hear explosions, gunfire, and the launching of rockets. They used my books as a way to escape into another world, where the monsters were fictional, and where demigods usually saved the day. While I am always glad that my books can help young readers find joy during difficult times, my heart breaks every time I hear about the things they have to deal with. I am grief-stricken by the horrific events now unfolding, especially because I know that they are part of a long historic pattern that has been robbing too many children of their childhood and perpetuating hatred for far too long.
I am also quite aware that when anyone, myself included, tries to speak about this issue, the reader is waiting to pounce, thinking, “Yes, but whose side are you on?” That is exactly the wrong question. If there are two sides to this issue, those sides are not Palestinian/Israeli or Muslim/Jewish. The two sides are humanitarian and dehumanizing. Dehumanizing has a long evil history. It is appealing and easy to buy into, because humans are tribal animals. We are hardwired to think in terms of ‘us’ versus ‘them.’ We are the real humans, the good guys, the ones with God on our side. Those other people are evil monsters who don’t deserve empathy. Hate mongers have thrived on dehumanizing for as long as there have been humans. It provides them with a purpose, a way to rally support, power, and scapegoats. It is easy to point to atrocities committed by our enemies, while justifying or minimizing the atrocities committed by ourselves or our allies.
Humanitarianism is a much harder sell. It requires us to empathize, to see other groups of people as equally deserving of dignity and quality of life. It requires not always putting ourselves and our needs first. But in the long run, humanitarianism is our only hope. If violence could end violence, if we could put an end to “those other people” once and for all, human history would read very differently than it does.
So yes, I am appalled by the Hamas attacks on Israeli civilians. I am appalled by the suffering of Palestinian civilians in Gaza. Both things can be true. Both things must be true. My thoughts are with all the people who have died, who have lost loved ones, who have had their worlds and their lives shattered, especially the children. More death and violence will not break this cycle, which has been going on for generations. There is no military solution. Even since I first wrote the post, only twenty-four hours ago, the Israeli government’s brutal retaliation against the entire population of Gaza has reached genocidal proportions. This is not only an atrocity. It is folly. Answering misery with misery only creates more fertile ground for extremism, dehumanizing the “other side,” letting hate mongers thrive, stay in power, and reduce us all to our most monstrous impulses. The only real solution is treating each other like equally worthy human beings, and negotiating a peace that allows all parties a chance to live in security and dignity, with hopes for a future that does not include bombs and rockets and gunfire. This means security and support for Israel, yes. It also means a secure Palestine which is allowed to get the international aid and recognition it needs to build a viable state.
Do I think that will happen? Unfortunately, no. Humans are simply too selfish, too ready to blame “the other” for all their problems, too ready to dehumanize, though I also believe, perhaps paradoxically, that most people just want to live their lives in peace and have a chance for their children to have a brighter future. The problem is when we don’t allow other people to have those same hopes and dreams — when it becomes a false choice of us versus them.
What can I do? I will continue to write books that I hope will give young readers some joy. I will resist the urge to demonize entire groups of people. I will call for less violence, not more violence. And when asked whose side I am on, I will tell you I am on the side of humanitarianism.
So with that said, I return to the world of books . . .
honestly, if you have a problem with this statement, it’s probably because he’s talking about you. this is exactly what legitimate activists (as in not just random westerners who share social media posts but on-the-ground activists who are doing real work) have been saying for decades. and i think all this really speaks to just how disconnected a lot of westerners who claim to be pro palestinian are from those activists.
if you can’t read a statement that says “i am on the side of humanitarianism and less violence” without immediately jumping to cancel them, you are the problem being discussed in the above statement.

Vapes are also terrible for your heart and lungs -and I am not promoting healthist discourses here (because yes at the end of the day it's your body) -I'm just here to educate folks/those who are unaware, because although there are many ways the medical industrial complex is complete shit -it has been proven that vaping can cause what professionals call "popcorn lungs," and is quite painful and serious -the more you vape, the more you accelerate symptoms associated with this. However, respectfully so -this is not to stigmatize or shame anyone. I just wanted to put this out there as well. So boycott vapes for ethical reasons -and just overall.

hi, about the yunjin starbucks controversy.
i’m gonna try to be as fair as possible talking about this controversy, but i’ll be honest i’m leaning more on yunjin’s side. i’ve been getting several requests on yunjin and i feel like i need to get this off my chest every time i see her name on my page.
let’s start off with the facts: yunjin was caught drinking starbucks in Korea (in front of the company building.)
I thought she drank it on a post or somethrong but no, it was just a few pixels of a low quality picture fans took. And that’s my first minor problem; she wasn’t on live, it wasn’t a post, it was a few milliseconds of pixels. But I get the ‘performative activism’ controversy, it DOES feel like she’s hiding it.
However, my take is that she just got out from her car, and wanna know a little fun fact? Most snacks and drinks that all idols are seen eating are most likely bought by their managers. And it’s a fact that Koreans aren’t currently boycotting Starbucks as actively as western foreigners are. So my thought the first time I saw the picture was that. The manager probably just bought coffee from whatever shop was closest, and handed it to her.
But I do understand how that can feel like reaching so I did some more research .
The biggest thing I have to so called ‘defend’ Yunjin is that Starbucks Korea is completely separate from International Starbucks (source: ChosunBiz).
In 2021, 67.5% of Starbucks was comepletely bought by E-Mart (a branch of Shinsegae), and the rest 32.5% was bought by a Singaporean investment comapny (GIC).
So oh, Starbucks Korea has no affiliations with the part of Starbucks that sues their worker’s union.
However, I can make the argument that Yunjin could influence others to ignore the boycott and buy Starbucks. Is it true that she has several international fans and alot of impressionable fans? Yes.
But then we have to go back to our first argument; it was a few milliseconds of a low quality video.
And after finding that out, I started to feel like all the people commenting about “starbucks queen💕” and “omg whats your starbucks order?” is the problem.
YOU guys are the one promoting Starbucks at this point. Do you understand?
I’m not saying don’t hold someone accountable, no, but I’m saying the comments aren’t fucking helping.
Don’t get me wrong, I do live in Korea, and I have been actively avoiding purchasing from them because I saw a few posts on twitter referencing it. I based an activity on a twitter post. And wanna know when I figured out WHY I was supposed to boycott exactly?
After I deleted Twitter because of the stress I got from the app.
That’s when I finally found out about the BDS list, found out oh, Puma is on the list, McDonalds is an even bigger problem than Starbucks (directly supplying food to soldiers), HP APPARENTLY SUPPLIES TECH FOR THE ISRAEL GOVERNMENT, and oh wow! Starbucks isn’t even on the list because theres not enough proof that they financially fund Israel.
In conclusion, the people preaching about how Yunjin is a performative activist is such hypocrites themselves
It’s clear that while some of the comments and criticisms are genuine, trying to hold a person accountable, but its also clear that the repeat of the same mocking comments of Yunjin is just performative and for attention and likes.
That’s what pisses me off. People who don’t give a shit about Palestine, and people even if they do support Palestine not even doinng the bare minimum amount of research just having fun mocking (not criticizing) a person when a tiny bit of wrong doing is shown.
Please, go look in the mirror, and i dont like saying this but go touch grass, do your own research, dont base off your whole ideology on a reddit post or a twitter, tumblr post, read different variety of news articles from several companies, and THEN make your decision on a situation. Not only Starbucks, not only on Yunjin, but on several other ones too.
Media literacy. Look it up.

Strike Etiquette:
Please note: This applies to everyone, not just members of a union or a specific union. This applies to you. Yes. You. You, too. Also you. No, you can't use a note from your mom to get out of it.
DO NOT SCAB. EVER. In the case of the WGA, if you scab you will never be allowed to join. Period. No exceptions. Even if that weren't the case, please understand that union protections are not enforced if you're strike-breaking. You will get screwed in perpetuity for a quick buck. Don't fuckin' do it. Don't betray your fellow workers by scabbing. You're placing striking workers in danger and increasing their hardship.
DO NOT CROSS A PICKET LINE UNLESS YOU HAVE BEEN INSTRUCTED BY THE STRIKING UNION TO DO OTHERWISE. When nurses or doctors or hospital staff strike they absolutely will instruct the public to cross their picket line. I don't care what your excuse is. It's a shit excuse and you can shove it. Unless you've been told by the striking union it's okay you never, ever, ever, ever cross a picket line in any way.
DO NOT BOYCOTT UNLESS AND UNTIL THE STRIKING UNION CALLS FOR ONE. Unions are backed by smart organisers who know when to start and how to structure a boycott for maximum effectiveness. Trust that unions know what they're on about and FOLLOW THEIR LEAD.
SUPPORT STRIKING WORKERS. Post messages of solidarity on social media. Encourage others to follow strike etiquette. If you can show up and show the striking workers on the picket line your support. Donate to a strike fund. Find out what you can do to help others unionise. Unionise your own workplace if that's feasible.
This has been a public service message from me. Thank you for your time.

It would be great if people stopped using real atrocities as an excuse to hate on a White Girl Brand.
Even BDS does not focus on Starbucks. They haven't mentioned it since 2014.
"I'm boycotting Starbucks in support of Palestine!" No, chance are you saw a chance to talk shit about a brand that's popular and it makes you feel like you're better than everyone else. It gets notes. Why talk about actual boycotts like Chevron and HP and Sodastream and Puma when you can give people an excuse to hate That Popular Thing That Girls Like?
"But they shut down that one group for being pro-Palestine!" They shut it down with political speech as the EXCUSE. That was not about Palestine. It was about unions. That was a union-busting action. Not a political one. It was a stupid union-busting action because of the bad press it got them for supposedly being pro-Israel, but it was about the union. From the corporate perspective, it was about the union. It was a chance to take down one of the unions.
EDIT: Other claims of explicit zionism by the company as a whole have been debunked. The matter of Howard Schultz is more complicated. See below.
Boycott the company for its union-busting. A boycott without a clear message doesn't do shit, and you are wasting your time and energy, and spreading misinformation besides.
You are NOT HELPING PALESTINE by spreading misinformation. Sure, the opportunity to hate on Starbucks is going to mean more people share your past and it goes farther, but it's also going to make them think that boycotting a company that has nothing to do with Israel is going to help, rather than, say, paying attention to the gas pumps they use or the food they eat.
Tumblr media
The above image is from the BDS page on economic boycotts. It's official as of early January. This is on the same page:
We must strategically focus on a relatively smaller number of carefully selected companies and products for maximum impact. We need to target companies that play a clear and direct role in Israel’s crimes and where there is real potential for winning, as was the case with, among others, G4S, Veolia, Orange, Ben & Jerry’s and Pillsbury. Compelling large, complicit companies, through strategic and context-sensitive boycott and divestment campaigns, to end their complicity in Israeli apartheid and war crimes against Palestinians sends a very powerful message to hundreds of other complicit companies that “your time will come, so get out before it’s too late!”
Many of the prohibitively long lists going viral on social media do the exact opposite of this strategic and impactful approach. They include hundreds of companies, many without credible evidence of their connection to Israel’s regime of oppression against Palestinians. Many do not have clear demands to the companies as to what we expect them to do to end the boycott, making them ineffective.
I'm not saying that Starbucks SHOULDN'T be held accountable for using the Gaza war as a point of contention in their unrelated union situation. It was a shitty thing to do, and incidentally and indirectly supported Israel.
EDIT: I've been given some information on how Howard Schultz, the CEO, has investment ties to Wiz and other Israeli companies that are actually involved with current events. This is significantly more than I was previously finding. If you choose to boycott for this reason, have at ye.
However, I do still hold to my stance that companies ACTUALLY BEING TARGETED by BDS should be the ones name-dropped in posts that feature calls to action. It's a matter of efficiency and effectiveness. The more people that are led to believe that Starbucks is the biggest bad in the room, the less people will join in boycotts and divestment of McDonald's, Papa John's, Pizza Hut, Burger King, Wiz, Airbnb, Caterpillar, Chevron, and all the other companies that BDS is saying are actually important to stop giving money to.
Back to the original post.
But.
BUT
The proliferation of specifically anti-Starbucks rhetoric as a supposed form of pro-Palestine Action is overshadowing ACTUAL ACTION. If every single post about boycotting to support Palestine mentions Starbucks, and maybe Puma or Sodastream, but doesn't mention any of the two dozen other companies that BDS states are actually crucial to making a change, including other American food franchises (that just do happen to be more stereotypically boy-popular, like pizza and burger chains), then you are ACTIVELY taking away support from the boycotts that matter.
And the reason this happens is because "Starbucks bad" feeds into the confirmation bias for people that already dislike it for being popular or overpriced or not to their taste.
So take a step back. Ask yourself, "am I boycotting Starbucks because I actually believe it will help and am listening to groups like BDS, or am I just using this as an excuse to badger people into avoiding a franchise I already dislike?"
Okay? We on the same page?
Great. Now check if your local Starbucks is unionized, if their union is asking customers to boycott THEM, and then maybe boycott anyway.
But check if it's actually doing something or just distracting you from real activism, first.

Hey all! I just wanted to say that I’ve been getting a lot of questions in my inbox about how to support the WGA strike.
To answer the main question I’ve been getting, no one at the WGA has called for a boycott of watching/using television or streaming services. If that happens, I will let you know.
The main thing you can do right now, if you’re able, is to donate to the Entertainment Community Fund, which is a reputable and long-established hardship fund for people working in the entertainment industry. This is important because this fund is not just for writers, it benefits people at all levels who are going to be hurt by this. I was an assistant the last time the WGA almost struck and I was existentially terrified. Please look out for ways to support not just writers but everyone who works in the film and television industry. I will be keeping my eyes out -- if I see any assistant or crew funds popping up I will be signal boosting them.
If you want to give to something a little more whimsical, DSA-Los Angeles is raising money for food to send to the picket lines (and any that goes unused will go towards supporting future organized labor actions in Los Angeles): The Snacklist.
My other piece of advice is to just be very aware of where you’re getting your news from. Sites like Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter, and Variety depend heavily on the studio and network system for their business model, and are very conservative when it comes to criticizing industry power structures. Before you link or signal boost an article from one of these sites, take a beat to consider what biases might be at play. Information sources I prefer (admitting that I have my own biases) are places like the official WGA Twitter or statements from the WGA Negotiating Committee or Board of Directors. You can find information about all of this at the official WGA Strike Hub.
You can also think about how you’re talking about the strike. Yes, the writers are the ones striking, but if you look at the rundown of what happened at the negotiations I think it’s pretty clear that we are at this point because the studios refused to even open negotiations with us on most of our demands. This is just one gal’s take -- but we are NOT in this position because of the writers, we are in this position because of the studios, so be aware of the language that’s being used.
I have gained a lot of followers in the last few weeks as my strike posts have gone viral, and I want to honor that by continuing to be a good source of information. In particular, in the next few days I plan on writing up a detailed explanation of what everything in the WGA list of demands that was released entails and why we were asking for it. (I’m having an outpatient medical procedure on Thursday and will be on take-it-easy orders through the weekend, so that’s how I plan on contributing in the absence of being able to be at the picket lines)
Solidarity forever!

Listen, I know I'm just a fanfic writer and Yall are here for content and not real world shit, but I can't ignore what I've seen and heard. Yes, I could look away "for my mental health" or just ignore it and shut it out as many people, especially those my age are doing. But I won't. These people deserve to be seen, heard and witnessed. They deserve the attention. They deserve to be spoken about. If you wish to remain ignorant, that's on you. But this is a teaching moment, and I will be speaking.
In just 30 days Israel has killed more people in Gaza than Russia has in Ukraine during this most recent conflict. I need y'all to understand how vast that is, okay? In 30 days 10,022 are just...gone. At least 4,104 have been children. CHILDREN. Not war criminals, not armed militants, not soldiers. Fucking kids man!
In Gaza there are now 47 entire family trees have been wiped out. Not just a family of 3, entire bloodlines are gone. Entire. Bloodlines. Generations have been eradicated.
All of these weapons that are being used on innocent Palestinians have been provided or bought from the USA. They are being carpet bombed almost constantly. White phosphorus bombs, which is generally used to hide troop movements with its smoke, have been deployed in residential areas. These have caused a multitude of chemical burns to the people of Gaza, both internally and externally. Which, is a documented war crime btw. Hellfire missiles, which are used on high value targets/aircrafts due to their precision, have also been used. These missiles kill not by explosives, but by using blade like shrapnel and kinetic energy. Its ripping people apart like a blender.
The morgues are so full of the dead that Ice cream trucks are being used to store corpses. And corpses isn't even the correct term, because majority of those found are in pieces. Imagine having to have your neighbors help you pick of the severed limbs of a family member because no one is coming to help you. Either because they don't care to or they aren't being allowed into Gaza. So now the community must ban together to use its hands to dig through the rubble in the hopes of finding surviving loved ones or even just a body or some parts to bury.
And because it seems the leaders of the world can blindly turn an eye to the doctors, the everyday citizens and the politicians, so Children now have to win over sympathy to get a ceasefire. And they do that with a press conference, in fucking english because they know people will only listen if its english. In that press conference they tell us how they want to live and play and they legitimately invite us to help. That's how they phrase it, "We invite you to help". Imagine having to beg for the decency of others to shine through so you can make it to tomorrow yet alone adulthood.
They have bombed churches, a refugee camps, schools, homes, apartments, and hospitals. They rejoice and celebrate that schools in Gaza have shut down because the children that attended them are dead. How barbaric can Israel be? And yet they have the gall to call the Palestinian people animals. They condemn them as unfit for life while strutting around with headless babies and cheering
Recently, the power in Shifa hospital has been cut off and it's now been confirmed that all ICU patients (including around 50 premature babies) have all died because of this. To add to that, many sources are saying they have seen the armed IDF forces storm into Shifa hospital, where around 7,000 civilians, 650 patients and 650 medical staff are taking refuge and gunfire has been reported....I can only imagine that a massacre of immense proportions is taking place as I type.
It is time to act. I don't care how. Boycott, march/rally, call your representatives, donate, spread the word. I don't care how you do it, but don't sit idly by and just think "well, it's out of my hands" or "it doesn't concern me". Make your voice heard somehow. Demand a ceasefire now!
Sensitive imagery below (because some of y'all need to actually see to believe)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What did these citizens do to deserve eradication??
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I hope you feel the grief and anger as I do. Because we are witnessing a genocide take place. We are witnessing a multitude of war crimes happen with weapons our tax dollars paid for. And if all of this information doesn't phase you, doesn't evoke some kind of emotion within you, then I truly don't want you interacting on my page.

There is a lot of misinformation regarding the boycott for Palestine right now and I wanted to do my best to educate people who were unaware.
There is the BDS movement and Palestinians have said that this is the boycott list we should be ultimately focusing on. "The BDS movement uses the historically successful method of targeted boycotts inspired by the South African anti-apartheid movement, the US Civil Rights movement, the Indian anti-colonial struggle, among others worldwide."
Starbucks is not apart of their boycott campaign and although yes, there is other boycott lists that people have supported, we need to listen as allies for Palestine and follow this movement instead. The reason most people are boycotting Starbucks was for the fact they sued their union and have been illegally shutting down these unions by not allowing employees to protest or to show support for Palestine in their stores. The issue is (supposedly) not because Starbucks funds Israel, there has been no apparent sources for this. Palestinians have not referred Starbucks as a zionist company, however, due to their mistreatment of their staff and not allowing them to be Pro-Palestine, it is exactly why their company has been boycotted. Although, boycotting Starbucks is not benefitting Palestinians, but it will benefit the Starbucks' Union & employees. If the BDS movement adds Starbucks to one of the 4 lists, then please proceed with following their instructions.
The reason why its not helpful for boycotting companies that aren't on the list is because it defeats the purpose of a targeted boycott, it is disorganized. The more people focus on a smaller number of brands to boycott, the larger the impact will be.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for McDonald's, it is considered a Organic Boycott Target: "The BDS movement did not initiate these grassroots boycott campaigns but is in support of them due to these brands openly supporting Israel’s genocide against Palestinians".
On this website it will also state that some companies need pressure, not boycotting. Google is one of the pressure and non boycott targets. For example, as a university student, it is necessary for me to use Google because my student account system automatically requires us to use Gmail. You are allowed to use these non boycott targets, but should not endorse them. "We have not, on strategic grounds, called for a boycott of these brands and services, instead we strategically call on supporters and institutions to mount other forms of pressure on them until they end their complicity in Israeli apartheid."
The goal for pressuring and boycotting is for companies to stop being complicit in the genocide of Palestine. If a company retracts it's statement and goes from Pro-Israel to Pro-Palestine, this is a good thing and that is the result that Palestinians want. We can still actively avoid and boycott these companies for moral reasons, but for wanting companies to be "canceled" or end it's business, is not what Palestinians are asking us to do. These larger businesses have the necessary funds & pull to help support Palestine and we have to keep pressuring them to be on their side.
It is also important to not center boycotting around celebrities, influencers, and athletes or treat it as if it's a trend. It is not for you to make you feel better about yourself. Or to attack other people as well. Being outraged in a person's comment sections for having a coffee cup that isn't even from Starbucks is not serving Palestinians justice. Only boycott and pressure these companies with the intention of supporting Palestinian lives and for their right to receive their land back.
Also please be aware that there is other countries experiencing genocide such as Congo, Sudan, and more. It is best not to apply the same methods from Palestine movements to these countries, but instead find sources that are factual and boycott lists that will help these countries' specific needs.

Why do you like Gale? No hate, I’m honestly glad because I feel like we’re a minority because everyone seems to detest him. What is it specifically about his character that draws you in? For me it’s his endurance despite loss, his devotion to the cause, he’s the flawed rebel that isn’t pure because the system doesn’t allow him to be.
I like him for the reasons you just listed too. His growing hatred towards the capitol and his commitment to ending the oppressive situation is relatable and REAL. He is willing to make the hard choices that aren't always morally right but under the circumstances I can understand why he is willing to use violence, why he accepts that they aren't going to win this rebellion without a few civilian casualties. He was fully committed to the rebellion and was willing to die for Panem to be free and wasn't naive to how that was going to be achieved. I can respect that. Especially given his life circumstances and how much trauma he's been through (something that fans ignore because he wasn't in the horror that is the games, therefore, his trauma doesn't count). We get insight into his view on the people in the capital, the privileged, early on, Before the reaping he says "if they all stopped watching, there wouldn't be any games." in his eyes they are all complicit, which isn't necessarily true for every single peson but you can understand his point. The people in the capitol could at the very least all boycott the games and this would put an end to them because then no one would be profiting off them. We know this to be true as well because the games were not successful and barely anyone watched them in TBOSAS and they were likely going to stop them.
Another reason I like him is because of how loyal he is to his family, the everdeens (he would have taken care of them if Katniss had died and was taking care of them when she wasn't around) and his loyalty to his district. He saved as many people as he possibly could from 12 during the genocide and yet, he still felt guilty that he couldn't do more. It is important to note that it was AFTER witnessing the genocide that he fully became involved in the rebellion and the creation of weapons and was willing to make the tough calls that would've got people killed. He was still a rebel in the making before then but who can blame him? his father is killed in the mines and he has to take care of his mother and siblings and make sure they don't starve to death (yes people in district 12 were literally dying of starvation if anyone is forgetting that fact) and Katniss was the only person who understood this. He resents the fact that some people are living in luxury when his people are suffering so much, he hated the class system and wealth disparity which separates the districts and that is something most of us can understand in todays world. In catching fire, when more people started hating him, he's working 12 hour shifts in the mines that killed his father and yet, his family still don't have enough food to get by, he has siblings who are now getting old enough to enter the games and there's nothing he can do to help them if they get reaped because he's aged out and can't volunteer on his behalf. He acted like a dick at times but he was also suffering and lets not forget that moment when he was TORTURED by peacekeepers and could have been killed had Katniss not stepped in.
I don't agree with all of his decisions but when this war started there was no going back, they either win and create a better Panem or they die, their loved ones die or worse, they suffer fates worse than death and worse than the lives they had before. The first rebellion resulted in the games and further oppression of the districts, imagine how it would've ended if this rebellion was lost? When you're fighting a leader as brutal as Snow you have to fight dirty and be prepared to make terrible moves that Snow thinks you haven't got it in you to make.
Gale is resilient, passionate, a fighter, loyal, smart (disagree with his strategies but they were good and pragmatic war strategies) and just as flawed as any other complex character. It is a shame people hate him so much, and mainly because of a love triangle that Suzanne never intended to write in the first place.
Sidenote: the way the fandom hated on him just made me analyse his character more closely and like him MORE which is a bit of pattern with me and unfairly hated characters.

Reminder that tomorrow January 26 2024, is the ICJ ruling for South Africa vs The Settler Colony of Isnotreal
at 12:00GMT
Few things to keep in mind that concern me:
•"The ICJ’s rules require the petitioning nation to show that a dispute exists with the country it is accusing, and that they have tried to address it before approaching the court. If the ICJ announces Friday that it does not have jurisdiction in the case, the specific requests made by South Africa become immaterial." -Sarah Shamim on AlJazeera
This to me is very concerning because I think in the case of a Genocide we should not be like "damn sorry we can't say/do anything in the matter because nobody formal disputed them before the case" there is enough evidence to show a genocide and the fact a lot of ppl around the world protested against and voted against should be used as more than an excuse for addressing the fucking issue of the genocide.
• This is a provisional case so not only does it need to have jurisdiction on the matter but also final ruling can take years (if the they do have jurisdiction then this allows for there to be done something like aid and put legal obligation to end the slaughter. This is what the provisional case is good for, my concern is just the fact the final ruling can take years.)
• The timing for trials etc, for every day that is spent on not being able to send help everyone is getting sick and hungry, Isnotreal stopped the aid of children's insulin, women don't have sanitation products for periods, men are making bread from animal fodder, IT IS FUCKING WINTER, when it rains tents flood.
Even if the ICJ's verdict is that Isnotreal is legally bound to stop the attacks on gaza, they are not allowed to enforce it but the ICC can get involved by being sent to trial for that. Again, more time waiting.
Good things to remember, I know it's a lot I just put out there that are very concerning things but:
•The ICC is allowed to physically get involved in the case that they continue their attacks
•We will never forget what they have done. We have the power to continue to speak up and do what we have been doing until there is proper justice
•like I said before even if the final ruling takes years there could be something done now to stop what's happening in Gaza.
• The lies Isnotreal stated on their case can not be held up as truths since there has been so much evidence.
An example: they stated that they were not destroying buildings and civilian homes that it was "Hamas putting booby traps"(yes thats exactly how they put it and they didnt provide pictures/evidence for this). Yet recently we saw the news of 21 of their soldiers being killed because they were setting bombs in buildings.
•Lastly the global strike still has a couple days left, do what you can. If you can protest, call representatives etc. Start getting involved in boycotts and uphold them past the global strike date. Start using the #feed north of gaza, on as many platforms as possible.

Ireland has had an antisemitism problem long before the creation of the modern state of Israel; for an example - see the 'Limerick boycott'.
Other nations that have very small Jewish populations and yet a lot of antisemitism include Iceland (and also all the Arab nations where Jews used to live in large numbers before having to flee to save their lives - although in these nations the small size of the Jewish population is a direct result of the antisemitism, whereas Ireland and Iceland have never had a sizeable Jewish population).
Iceland has also expelled Jews and in the late 30ies the Icelandic authorities even offered to pay for the further expulsion of Jews to Germany if the Danish authorities* wouldn't take the Jewish expellees. *for further context, see Icelandic-Danish relations
I learned that Dublin is the only city in Western Europe with a statue honoring a Nazi collaborator, Seán Russell, who died on a Nazi U Boat on his way back to Ireland to undertake a German plan to attack the British. So thats cool....
Yes the Nordics have always been weirdos when it comes to Jews, they've been passing bills to ban circumcision and Kosher slaughter.
Pakistan is another country, along with Malaysia, that have very small Jewish populations historically (and now) that are insanely antisemitic, though very next level compared to the worst Europe has to offer. There are a lot of literal Hitler fans out there, oh there was a clothing story in India called "Hitler" and an ice cream place
Tumblr media
who wants some Hitler ice cream? no? huh. Maybe telling how India's small historic Jewish communities all dried up nearly at once after the founding of Israel, more Jews decided to stay in Iran than stayed in India.

was just thinking about how easy it is to compare the current president of Israel (whose name I don’t even remember) to hitler. it fits the way we think, doesn’t it, foreign people do bad things, what we see as familiar is good. but then the more I think about it, about how this whole thing has been set up and the extent (which I have to learn more about exactly still) to which usamerica is driving a literal genocide then the person I’ve gotta do that comparing to is actually… joe biden??? like that’s such a curveball in our brains we never expected but if you trace the power structures, yes there’s a fair deal of being a puppet going on but only because he never stands up against it. because he doesn’t actually care to stop it. and actually how fucked up is it that we’re literally talking about how the best thing is to continue voting for him for president because the other guy is worse like ??? none of us expected it of usamerica. we respected that country. we still respect its people and hang out with them every day
but like. let that sink in for a second. the guy encouraging and allowing a genocide is the better of two options?? if that’s the case I’m sorry but the civilians really don’t have any power. I’m sorry but if that’s the standards we have we have to start imagining better. this is like when your parent asks you if you want to wear a red shirt or a blue shirt but you never got the option to wear a dress instead or simply no shirt at all. it’s the illusion of choice. and as a world how do we turn a blind eye to this?? how do we not call out our dear cousin usamerica who is clearly in a bad state right now? whose leadership desperately needs to do better especially if they’re going to be in a position of leadership in the world as the power structures would have that they are?
because people live and breathe economy I was thinking, what if the rest of us simply boycott usamerica like we boycott Israel?? that would send the global economy to shambles. and I know it’s not gonna happen all of a sudden (so no need to hurriedly account for all the people that would get hurt) but what if we did? simply stop buying and consuming things that come out of America?
now I’m probably one of the biggest and most long-standing swifties you’ll meet (tumblr doesn’t count it’s an echo chamber) but could I? could I simply hold off listening to the tortured poets department when it comes out and stick to her older stuff I already own on cd’s and the like? Taylor doesn’t need my money or my numbers next to her songs and I’m going to be missing a lot if I do this but when this is over, her music will still be there. My favourite author is American. that one might be harder since I really want to read the second sword catcher book (I’m not worried about twp since it’s not coming out til 2026). I know a bunch of technology comes out of usamerica but I don’t need to update any of my devices and if I do there’s probably other brands I can buy from. I think because my iTunes is Australian I might be okay with it?? but I’m trying to transition away from it and buy more cds anyway. And I don’t watch tv, I rarely watch movies now so I could probably forgo that too.
I was actually just thinking about how there are so many songs out there I probably won’t get to listen to. what if, in boycotting some this is my chance to broaden my horizons? and I will preface with the fact that I know many non American artists do live and record in LA: im not gonna boycott them for that. In fact I’ll support their music because I want them to come home. and I might make an exception for green day and good charlotte for generally protesting much about usamerica?? but tell me guys, what do you think?? is this feasible? I might actually do it. I’ll make an exception for tumblr probably and use meta social media to the minimum (maybe I should for tumblr too and google). but also. is this racist?? is it going to do any harm?? because damn it I want to support the people. I want to support marginalised groups and native americans but I also want to be part of a boycott that’s meaningful rather than a token gesture. and I know the usamericans of us can’t do this, but please if I do it see it as me supporting your rights to having your opinions heard on a political level because I come from a country that isn’t great colonialism wise but at least we have that and I can’t imagine not having it

Starbucks is not a legitimate boycott for Palestine. This has been said so many times.
Starbucks has nothing to do with Israel, they don’t even operate there.
And Starbucks never sued anyone for standing with Palestine, they sued people for COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT. If those people did the same thing with Israel, they would’ve been sued then too, because. you. cannot. use. a. copyrighted. item. without. permission. And that’s why it’s not a legitimate boycott target.
And me saying this has nothing to do with me being a fan of Lando or not. It has to do with the fact that wrongly boycotting Starbucks is not helping, there’s actual legitimate ways to help and businesses to boycott, but this is not one, boycott businesses that actually have something to do with all of this.
so, a few of the links i posted actually discuss these things and clarify them. i understood you the first time, there's no need to talk to me like i'm stupid, thank you.
i also clarified that it is not on the BDS list and it's not a primary company to boycott, but it is accepted as a company that should be boycotted. i am aware that there are more important companies to boycott (for example Puma, who sponsors a lot of F1 teams and makes their official merch and you should boycott them and you shouldn't buy official F1 merch for this reason) and yes, people should be aware of this. but boycotting Starbucks does not mean that people are not actively boycotting other companies too.
the boycott against Starbucks is well known because the company is super popular. because of this, more people hear about the boycott against them and thanks to that they find out more about the whole movement. (there are also more reasons to boycott Starbucks, not just this, but of course, everyone decides why they're boycotting something).
all in all, i'd rather boycott a company even on the slight off chance that they have anything to do with an ongoing genocide, than risk supporting them. also, it may just be me, but people didn't seem to have a problem with boycotting Starbucks until it came to justifying the actions of rich white men.
here is another link to explain why we should boycott Starbucks:
and here is the official BDS boycott list with the most important companies to focus on, in case someone doesn't know them.

Here's the downlow on the 'You can't be punk if you have [interest here]!!!' and 'You're gatekeeping punk by saying i can't like [same thing] and be a part of it!!!' discourse:There are many ways to be punk. There are many things that can make you inherently NOT punk unless you change them about yourself.I'm gonna use myself as an example so you can understand what i mean with specifics:
I'm afrolatina.I'm extremely feminine, pastel, super goofy and i wear skirts and stockings and sweaters and do my makeup in 2000s styles.I'm autistic and some of my special interests are kidcore and the indie genre, including listening to stereotypical transmasc/nonbinary bands like The Front Bottoms and being fandoms like Adventure Time and MLP.I haven't been able to go to protests or deface public property yet because my current living situation would put my life at risk if i did.None of this makes me punk nor disqualifies me from it
I've read a lot of punk history and will continue until i literally can't find stuff i haven't.I'm a socialist.I'm learning to diy.I listen to punk music.Because of all the restaurant chain boycotts that have been going on,i've stopped buying from the ones i used to go to and looked up recipes on how to make their foods so i can still eat them but not give them support and similarly,i've decided to buy all my merch from media i like either secondhand or much preferably fanmade so i can support small artists with a focus on ones of color and trans and disabled ones.I save up spare money and have lied to my relatives to get them to give me more so i can donate to causes.I spread awareness about people in need so others can help them too.I do my best to be as respectful as possible in a humanizing way to minorities i'm not a part of and have erased my conservative family's teachings
I plan to get piercings,a battle jacket from a thrift store and load it with patches i made and pins bought from punk bussinesses and my current style is inherently gnc by virtue of me being both a man and a woman and i'm gonna present pastel punk specifically and that'll make it even moreso.I'm a firm believer in rights for all minorities with children being one of the main one's because i'm an eldest sibling and that made it so i ended up befriending a lot younger people enough that we consider eachother siblings too and a few of them even call me their parent because their actual ones are abusive and that's what made me go so hard for children's rights to begin with, especially since in almost all their cases it was motivated by them queer or neurodivergent or so forth, and a few of them have gone punk too because i inspired them to.This makes me punk and the first part dosen't invalidate that in any way,it's just another part of who i am because i'm a human person and therefore multifaced
And that's just the thing-Hobbies and tastes and most styles aren't inherently punk. There's tons,TONS of punk subgenres for a reason.Yes,they're are ones that make it so you can't be punk and yes, there's also ones that would you make a dumbass if you said they're the same as that.Punk has rules. You can be punk and be edgy, femme, indie and everything inbetween. You CAN'T be punk if you don't actually have our ideologies and do our cultural requirements because punk is not a universal heritage. You're not unpunk for not living up to the most popular imagine of us even though you have the personality and fufill the actions. You're unpunk if you prioritize fitting in over being kind and don't help out minorities to prioritize oppressors even though they're the ones you're supposedly fighting for and cry 'cencorship and purity culture' when people think you're gross for having age/raceplay and incest and noncon kinks and sexualizing minors even if they're not 'real' or it's 'just pretend' when there's actual harmful cencorship and when purity culture is about christians historical abuse of young women using their sexualities against them to cater to men.Los Punkeros son asunto serio,no mamen

Over 100 artists including Rage Against the Machine co-founders Tom Morello and Zack de la Rocha, along with Boots Riley and Speedy Ortiz, have announced that they are boycotting any concert venue that uses facial recognition technology, citing concerns that the tech infringes on privacy and increases discrimination.
The boycott, organized by the digital rights advocacy group Fight for the Future, calls for the ban of face-scanning technology at all live events. Several smaller independent concert venues across the country, including the House of Yes in Brooklyn, the Lyric Hyperion in Los Angeles, and Black Cat in D.C., also pledged to not use facial recognition tech for their shows. Other artists who said they would boycott include Anti-Flag, Wheatus, Downtown Boys, and over 80 additional artists. The full list of signatories is available here.
“Surveillance tech companies are pitching biometric data tools as ‘innovative’ and helpful for increasing efficiency and security. Not only is this false, it’s morally corrupt,” Leila Nashashibi, campaigner at Fight for the Future, said in a statement. “For starters, this technology is so inaccurate that it actually creates more harm and problems than it solves, through misidentification and other technical faultiness. Even scarier, though, is a world in which all facial recognition technology works 100% perfectly – in other words, a world in which privacy is nonexistent, where we’re identified, watched, and surveilled everywhere we go.”
Facial recognition technology at venues has grown increasingly controversial over the past several months, particularly as Madison Square Garden Entertainment and James Dolan have garnered scrutiny for using the tech to kick out lawyers affiliated with ongoing lawsuits against the company. Several attorneys had been removed last year from events at MSG’s venues including its eponymous arena and Radio City Music Hall. Last October, attorney Barbara Hart was removed from Brandi Carlile’s Madison Square Garden Concert because her law firm was litigating against MSG in a class action lawsuit. (Hart herself wasn’t involved with that suit.)
