What are your favorite chinese webnovels? What are some of the differences youve noticed between cnovels and other types of novels?

That second question is really, REALLY interesting, and I really want to answer it well, and I am REALLY sure I’m going to do a bad job of answering it, so let me just noodle about that first question for a minute while I try to think XD

I went through some of my TOP-top favorite novels in more detail yesterday, but generally speaking, mxtx and meatbun are both at the top of the pack. They’re really good at writing compelling main characters and balancing piles of angst with plenty of humor and pulling everything together into a very satisfying ending (which is something I don’t alwaysssss see, even in some of the novels I really like). After them, The Disabled Tyrant’s Pet Palm Fish (transmigration, ancient chinese prince falls in love with pet fish) and Golden Stage (ancient chinese gay arranged marriage between bitter enemies(?)) are two novels that I love a lot, which both have very cute romances and go a bit lighter on the main character suffering front, and which I broadly recommend to anyone who’s interested in the genre. They didn’t end stick the landing QUITE as hard as an svsss or tgcf, but they still were very nice.

Then, let me see. I’m trying to remember which books I’ve read in the last year, and am doing a terrible job, haha. I will say that a book I enjoyed for like... eighty percent of it and then the ending let me down terribly was The Dreamer In The Spring Boudoir (modern day career woman transmigrates into barely-fantasy ancient china novel as the disliked primary wife of a nobleman), which is also the only straight webnovel I’ve read so far. The main character and romance were delightful, but that ending... haha, wow, I felt betrayed. But I did like the first half very much!! I’m idly contemplating a deliberately-partial reread. Then I’m currently like two chapters away from catching up with the current translation of The Wife Is First (ancient chinese prince lives out time travel fixit fic, determined to treat his spouse better this time around). I’m also catching up on Heroic Death System (transmigration, across MANY universes, where the goal is to die heroically in each one, and also maybeeeee to find his boyfriend in each one. this shit gets fucking bananas. in one of them, he emotionally seduces his boyfriend while he’s a dolphin. in another one, he’s a sentient mushroom. i’m in the middle of a section titled ‘I Am An Evil Pen’. yes, like a writing utensil type of pen. this is the weirdest book I’ve read so far). Oh, and Thousand Autumns (righteous sect leader gets sabotaged and loses a fight, wakes up blind and amnesiac, demonic sect leader is like ‘lol i bet i can turn him evil’ and accidentally catches feelings along the way).

What else... I’m keeping up with (but behind on) some others. First, there’s How To Survive As A Villain (modern terminally ill CEO transmigrates into stallion novel, wakes up as villain, accidentally seduces hero). Then, we’ve got Transmigrating Into The Body Of The Heartthrob’s Cannon Fodder Childhood Friend (only modern webnovel I’ve read, young man transmigrates into beginning of gratuitous whump book, back in high school, and is determined to protect the protagonist from all the canonical suffering). Then there’s Pulling Together A Villain Reformation Strategy (guy transmigrates into story as the hero’s childhood friend who will eventually become his enemy and get killed, successfully acts out his part and dies, completely fails to realize he’s broken his friend’s heart in the process... and then wakes up in another character’s body). And then there’s The Villain’s White Lotus Halo (a transmigrator keeps bouncing from universe to universe as a cannon fodder villain, who gets like half a line before being killed. he tries to purchase an upgrade package so he can be a COOL villain instead, but accidentally gets sold a ��white lotus halo’ package instead, so that no matter what he does, everyone is just DEEPLY moved by his appearance and is positive he did nothing wrong). All of those are EXTREMELY delightful. You may notice a running transmigration theme, which....... yeah, I think there are a TON of delightful stories in the webnovel scene that deal with this genre, which seem so rare in English language media.

Which makes a good transition point to what’s different about the cnovel scene! I’ve seen hardly any transmigration stories in English, and I’ve got a couple go-to examples for when I’m trying to explain it, but like. Only a couple. Which is such a shame! Like, there’s the default idea of ‘I was reading this book and then I woke up inside the book!!’ but it’s clearly such an established genre that people are playing with it in all kinds of interesting ways, like in The Villain’s White Lotus Halo or Heroic Death System setups. It’s kind of wild to me, because it seems like such a gimme for a nice easy story structure? Whatever kind of world you want to present, there’s no need to introduce it to the reader from the ground up, or find a good way to hook them in. Either the main character read the book in question and can explain the premise and why we should care in pov, or the main character is new to the universe too, and trying to find their own footing. I enjoy it a lot! I’ve sampled transmigration books that didn’t grab me, but I’ve sampled way more that did. 

And then, the one semi-technical answer I thought of to this question was the way that these novels tend to handle pov. It’s not a hard-and-fast rule that regular novels are restricted to one pov, or that pov can only change at hard breaks in the story, but if I saw a bog-standard american novel glide from pov to pov the way these novels regularly do, I would tend to wonder if it was sloppiness or a mistake, or I would grump to myself about how I don’t like omniscient third person pov. And I still don’t know exactly what I think about this, or why it’s different in here, but I’m pretty sure I like it a lot, especially for stories where the romance tends to play a large part :V 

I used to read a lot of Books About Writing, and read plenty of stuff about why you don’t DO this, but.... I like it! In dtppf, Jing-wang can’t talk, and when Li Yu is a fish, he can’t talk, and drifting from one of their perspectives to the other gives me lots of useful information about how they’re both feeling. Could that be conveyed through restricted pov? Maybe! But I’m typesetting the svsss extras right now, and I’m in the bing-ge vs bing-mei section, and we get a few brief flashes of bing-ge’s thoughts, and it’s so NICE. It’s information I would not have otherwise received, because Shen Qingqiu sure wasn’t going to notice it. But early in the story, that pov was withheld from me, which also made sense (or hua cheng’s pov was withheld from me FOREVER, which makes me so sad ;u;). There don’t seem to be any hard and fast rules, which makes me really nervous about writing fic and trying to match the style, but I do like it a lot! 

And I’m definitely not able to articulate this in the way that I would like to, or speak with any real authority (I’m not that widely read in the cnovel scene, and i’m not very genre-adventurous in english), but there’s something about the role that the romances play in these stories that’s different from what I’m used to expecting, and it’s VERY tasty to me. I only rarely read romance novels, because I’m not often interested in the romance as a primary plot driver, but the romances in these books play a more substantial role than I’m used to expecting. And I’m into it! It’s a balance closer to what I’d expect from, like, a shippy longform fanfic. Which covers a lot of ground and is NOT a precise measure, but there’s more emotional weight given to the romance than I would expect, but without the romance carrying ALL of the emotional weight, and it strikes a perfect balance for me in a way I’m not used to encountering. Now, some of this could definitely be due to me not finding the right authors, or right subgenres, or whatever. But in the genres I inhabit, it’s a subtle difference, but one I find compelling.

Oh, one last thing. The cultural differences, duh :P I’m only familiar with things like, say, ancient chinese court etiquette through a lens of fan-translated novels like these, and I didn’t grow up steeped in the culture in a way I’m used to the trappings of something like medieval european courts. But there’s a distinct flavor to the social dynamics of these novels, from the formal levels down to the casual, and I know it’s super intricate and detailed and that authors play with differing degrees of historical accuracy vs fictional fun, and I wish I was better equipped to speak to the nature of any of this. But I find it really compelling! I recognize that it’s only new to ME because I didn’t seek out chinese media before now. And, the point that I originally wanted to get to before I got super distracted: the flirting. The flirting and teasing are a very different flavor from what I would expect in most english language media, and I love it, even if I can’t speak to how much of that is purely cultural, and how much of it is like... the conventions of How Fiction Is Written varying by culture, if that makes sense. I adore seeing what flirting and affection and indulgence and attentiveness look like in different settings, and these books, with their heavy romantic focus, absolutely deliver.

Sadly, it seemed they'd rather prioritize pep rallies and Career Aptitude Tests than do their job in keeping kids safe.

By around Spring, I'd had enough. By now, my sadness and annoyance had transmuted into boiling rage that I'd been keeping in me for far too long. If nobody was going to fight for me, I'd do it for myself, literally. I devoted the majority of my weekend to prepping for a showdown on Monday.

One of the few good things about my father is that how knowledgeable he is in self-defense. He believed it was important for a man to learn to fight, so he had me take several different kinds of martial art classes. If I was gonna fight a bully, I had to make it a proper fight. I then researched about Krav Maga, a branch of martial arts that's basically a military-style form of self defense, meant to train you how to fight if you were ever in danger "outside the arena." No rules, no balanced teams, no referees; just you and your need for survival. One of the components of Krav Maga is knowing the body's biggest "weak spots," ones that maximize the most amount of pain when hurt. Things like the groin, toes, and eyes were obvious, but you could also hit the knees, solar plexus, and even the spine. Since my classes didn't teach Krav Maga (you had to be 16 at the time,) I watched many online videos, making mental notes of the techniques used. It was almost always the same kid or group of kids that bullied me, so I already knew what they looked like, and, more importantly, where to strike.

On Monday, I waited for the next chance to come for the bullies to attack. To my surprise, they kept quiet for the most part. Maybe this was one of my lucky days where I'd actually get some work done. Then, while I was crunching for an exam during lunch, one of the bullies, a regular, spilled my water all over my textbook, and saying, "Whoops, sorry!" As he and his pals started walking away laughing, I got a good look at the back of the guy's neck. I raised my fist, aiming for the middle where I'd likely hit his spinal column.

WHAM! I knocked the guy over to the ground. That's when all Hell broke lose. His friends tried tackling me away, and I tried remembering to hit all their weak points: eyes, throat, groin, and jaw. It was fairly sloppy attempt at Krav Maga given my inexperience, and the other kids trying to fight back, but it got the effect I wanted. Of course, I didn't come out unscathed. I got punched in the jaw, a bloody nose, a bruise to the forehead, and more than a few kicks in the family jewels. The other kids noticed us fighting, with some going to get a teacher while others watched in a mix of shock and excitement. Eventually, the principal and a few other teachers pulled us apart, and sent us to the office, after our injuries were treated.

The principal talked with us individually while the assistant principal called all our parents. When it was my turn, I explained what happened. At some point, the principal said, "Why didn't you tell the teacher?" At that moment, I just snapped, somehow managing to sound even angrier than when I was fighting a few minutes ago. "I ALREADY TOLD THE DAMNED TEACHERS, LIKE A MILLION FUCKING TIMES, BUT NOBODY WAS DOING SHIT ABOUT IT! NOBODY! YOU TELL ME OVER AND OVER 'I'LL TAKE CARE OF IT, I'LL TAKE CARE OF IT,' BUT NOBODY EVER FUCKING DOES! I WOULDN'T HAVE FELT LIKE I HAD TO DO THIS OF SOMEBODY HERE ACTUALLY DID THEIR DAMNED JOB FOR ONCE!" I got an extra week of suspension for yelling.

Much to my surprise, my father was rather quiet about the whole thing. Normally, my father had the temperament of a dragon, but maybe this whole fight touched his inner "macho man" that made him go easier on me.

On the car ride home, he said calmly, but firmly, "What happened? And tell me the truth." I told him, "They wouldn't stop picking on me, so I defended myself." I waited to hear my father make some snide remark about hurt feelings, but he just said, "Were you in danger?" I paused for a moment, and said, "...Yes." I knew I was exaggerating, but maybe this could open my father's eyes to see how much I was hurting. He was quiet for a minute, and then said, "I can't judge on your situation 'cause I wasn't there, but it's in a boy's nature to be aggressive sometimes, and it sounds like those bullies were just using it for harm. I also know you well enough t'know you wouldn't lay a finger on somebody unless you felt like you had to." I nodded, holding back tears. "Next time you're ever in that kinda danger, call me. Don't wait for the teachers to fail you again. I'll give 'em Hell." I was stunned, and, once I realized what'd just happened, I smiled. That's one of the few redeeming qualities about my father. As toxic and narcissistic as he was, he was an expert on bringing vengeance to those who deserved it.

During my suspension, one of the bullies' parents wanted to press assault charges on me, but my father threatened to counter-sue the school AND the parents for letting the bullying go on for so long. Thankfully, nobody had to go to court as the bullies' credibility sank faster than the Titanic. Once word got around that I fought back to stop the bullying (rather than the strong, quiet guy going psycho,) more kids decided to come forward to the principal about their experience being bullied, too, and how they also went to the teachers for help. This included a few girls who were being sexually harassed by these kids. This was a PR nightmare for the school that left a permanent stain on their reputation among the locals. In the end, the bullies got expelled, some faced charges for sexual harassment, and I got transferred to a different high school. I guess I'm a little proud that I inspired some other troubled kids to come forward, but I really didn't like violence. I'm built for self-defense, but I don't like hurting anybody unless it's to protect those I love. I would've much preferred if teachers actually did their job, and "took care of it" before I had to.

I did get a gift certificate for summer classes in Krav Maga for my Sweet 16. Thankfully, I've never had to use it yet.

TL;DR: Bullies spend months torturing me, and teachers won't do anything, so I researched and imitated an advanced martial arts to bring maximum physical pain to my bullies.

They put Betty in these sweaters that appear (to me) slightly too long for her torso. I might just think this because cropped styles are really prevalent right now (in 2019, an fyi for all u future historians, ur welcome), but a sweater whose hem hits at the top of her bottom rather than at her natural waist is defo a motif.

I-have-a-fucking-story-to-report realness!! The railroad stripes are honestly lovely, it’s ever-so-slightly sheer, and it looks comfortable. I feel like Alice would call this semi-sloppy.

GOM switching bodies! Maybe: Kuroko --> Aomine, Kise -->Midorima, and Akashi-->Mukkun! (Or whatever combo you want!)

Kuroko & Aomine:

At first Kuroko would h a t e it. Despite the criticism of his original body type from others, this boy loves himself from head to toe.

Getting accustomed to Aomine’s tall frame, long limbs, and lean muscles would take time, but I think Kuroko would learn to appreciate them.

Okay so obviously the boys would have to switch lives until they find out how to swap back. Kuroko would roast the living hell out of Aomine for choosing to live the way he does (it be like that Goofy “bitch you live like this” memenksdfm).

Aomine-kun, how it is possible that your room smells that bad? 

I used out two bottles of air freshener and the stench is still there.

Aomine-kun, do you really wear the same uniform pants everyday without washing them?

On the court, he’d be just as dangerous as Aomine…but in a totally different way.

Imagine finally attaining the skills to be an all-around player at something you adore but not knowing how to use those skills? Kuroko would be so sloppy on the courtjsfns

He’d have the physique of a natural basketball player but wouldn’t have Aomine’s years of refining so he’d be horrible at control, especially since Aomine is a streetballer.

I think Kuroko would want to stick to his style of basketball anyway. When he realizes it’s impossible for him to remain unnoticed, he sticks to making shots and using Aomine’s strength to pass the ball quickly. Also, defense? He’d be a monster.

Touou would be so confused when they see Aomine passing the ball more often than usual. Wakamatsu would suspect that he’s up to no good and corner Kuroko in the locker room to warn him that he has his “eye on [him.]”

MOMOI WOULD BE SO HAPPYYY! But also extremely uncomfortable because she’d develop a crush on Kuroko’s conscience in Aomine’s body. I headcanon that she doesn’t care much about appearance. Well actually, that’s pretty canon anyway.

Watching Aomine’s body do everything that she wishes he would, would be an odd experience: working hard, putting his team’s needs above his own, performing random acts of kindness. She’d constantly slap herself and scold, “Wake up, Momoi! Get your head together! You like Tetsu, not that blockhead. TetsuTetsuTetsuTetsu-

This also makes me think of how Kuroko would handle the experience of having darker skin. And not only that but having Aomine’s physique while having darker skin. It would definitely be different from his own. I think he’d walk away from the body swap with newfound insight on who Aomine is as a person.

Aomine would be so aggravated lol

No more naturally athletic body. No more fast reflexes. No more running a mile and hardly breaking a sweat.

As a matter-of-fact he’d break all the sweats in Kuroko’s body. He’d barely make it two laps without his chest burning.

Would he be able to achieve Kuroko’s legendary pass? Hm. Challenge me but I would say yes. Apart from Aomine being incredibly adaptable, he’s stopped Kuroko’s pass before. He has the power and expertise to achieve it  b u t will it be exactly like Kuroko’s? Hell no.

Aomine would be around Kagami 90% of the time so you know what that meanssss

Fights where Aomine is like “YOU WANNA GO?!” and Kagami is like “HELL YEAH I WANNA GO B-BUT NOT WHILE YOU’RE TETSU! I’LL HURT HIS LITTLE BABY BODY!”

The challenges on the court would be tiring for everyone

Shooting contests in the middle of practice? Hell yeah. (Until Riko sets them skraight)

Burger eating contests at Maji Burger? Oh ho ho most definitely. (Until Aomine throws up red-brown chunks since Kuroko’s little belly can’t handle all that beef.)

Who can do the most burpees in one go after a practice game? No sweat. (lol Actually a very big sweat. Kuroko’s body is going to Break.)

This goes on until Kuroko gives Aomine a very stern talking to.

AOMINE WOULD BE SUCH A BABY ABOUT KUROKO’S LOW PRESENCE I’M CRYING

He wouldn’t be upset that he’s not the center of attention. Honestly, I feel like he’d be more happy blending in because he doesn’t care for others’ opinions of him either way. As long as they leave him alone, he’s good.

It would be about respect.

Just imagine it.

People bumping into him and barely apologizing. Him gesturing for a pass on the court and a teammate failing to notice. People skipping him in lines when he’s literally RIGHT THERE.

He wouldn’t have the tolerance for it. It makes him feel weak since, in his original body, he can’t go unnoticed no matter how hard he tries.

I think Kuroko’s patience is what Aomine would learn to respect from this experience.

Akashi & Murasakibara:

Okay, okay, okay

So Akashi and Murasakibara are the complete opposite of one another in almost every possible way which is the EXACT reason why this is the PERFECT body swap.

So first off, Akashi is not letting Mura out of his sight. That’s a firm no-no. He’s reserving a room for him in his father’s mansion ASAP. Challenge me on this, I will go to the grave with it because there is no way that Akashi is not turning this into one of his personal projects.

Not that Mura would have a problem with it. He’d have a bigger, warmer bed to sleep in and an endless supply of snacks (even though Akashi would limit his snoozing time and portion his meals).

Akashi would create a “How to be Akashi Seijurou 101” class for Mura

It involves developing good people skills, answering phone calls, using table manners, Akaashi’s night routine, how to keep track of the percentage of equity his father’s company owns in several properties, you know simple things like that

He has to sit through it for 2 hours daily

Mura only lasts 2 minutes

Once t h a t fails, Akashi gets realistic and makes a smart decision: he puts Mura in charge of investing

But not just investing in anything

Investing in restaurants :)

The boy is a pro at picking out spots with 1) good food, 2) a beautiful and comfy atmosphere and 3) great hospitality

 Mura gets to go to restaurants weekly for complementary taste-testings, courtesy of the chef and is often invited to the kitchen to see what’s happening

Akashi in Murasakibara’s body wouldn’t be much of a shift.

This is the King of Adapting we’re talking about here.

He’d have his wardrobe in Mura’s size by the next day.

 He’d request his personal barber to trim his split ends and wear it in a bun at all times. (He actually wants to cut it off but he respects Mura’s boundaries.)

Akaashi would be the most honest out of all of GOM. He’d have meetings with every necessary person in his life and all involved (his basketball team and his father, Mura’s parents, Mura’s team, maybe even GOM)

The rest would have to deal with Murasakibara’s (body’s) abrupt 180 in choice of lifestyle

Himuro would be in Hell.

Both him and Akaashi are leaders. Akaashi stepping into his territory, especially in Mura’s body (a person Himuro is used to taking care of), would throw Himuro alllllll the way off and their dominant personalities would clash

Akaashi be fine on the court

He’d still have his ability since it’s not very physical, more mental

Playing D wouldn’t be a problem at all

But taking a back seat so the captain of the team can actually be the fucking captain oh ho ho ho no boy

Kise & Midorima:

Kise wouldn’t enjoy the switch

He would complain until he couldn’t anymore BUT he’d make the best of the situation like he usually does

He’d make it his duty to give Midorima a makeover

New clothes, new shoes, colored contacts? Why not

Takao would be down to clown at first but once Kise starts redecorating Midorima’s locker with things other than Mido’s charms, he gets nervous

Kise wouldn’t have a problem on the court since he’s done a version Midorima’s shot tons of times before BUT everyone wouldn’t despise his whining

Like Takao would make it his mission to convince the team to lock the kid in the equipment room for a practice

After the initial panic attack, I think he’d be chill about everything

Kasamatsu and Midorima would butt heads on the court but other than that, they’d be fine. Once Mido makes it clear that he is not “that jovial idiot” the upperclassmen has gotten accustomed to, Kasamatsu leaves him alone

Kasamatsu would want one thing and one thing only: for them to hurry up and switch back (he secretly misses his buddy)

why fuck makeup

oooh thanks for reminding me 

anyways i wear makeup somewhat often and enjoy it and have no issue with makeup in theory, and i’d never shame anybody for wearing makeup, any problems i have with makeup i have with companies or the role makeup plays in society, also im kind of an idiot an im just tired with makeup atm, but here are some main points on why it’s not that great

the social aspect, which everybody fucking knows blah blah blah, how many women are scared of being seen without makeup, almost all women are scared to go on a first date without makeup, everybody has heard this. the good news is we all know this is definitely ppl wear makeup others dont find them attractive in and take pride in the art aspect. that’s very nice. also, people like goths have worn makeup for a long time not to be attractive but to fit the style, which obviously doesn’t work for this example. also, guys who wear makeup rarely do it to be attractive to others. so, this point only applies to natural or natural ish makeup worn daily by so many women to be basically able to be seen around people. that fucking sucks. i know it’s not makeup’s fault, it’s sexism’s obviously, it’s just dumb how women often have to wear makeup to be considered attractive, from just taking a photo to being in a movie where u play someone on an abandoned island where it doesn’t make sense to wear makeup

also btw adding on to this social aspect, the main makeup style that is popular right now is great and i enjoy it, but trying a different form of makeup is often seen as like a mistake. if a girl tries a look with for example shimmer eyeshadow on the crease not matte, it will be seen a sloppy, as would “too much” eyeshadow on the bottom lid. anyways, the rules are too rigid to be really freeing

ok the first example everybody knows i probably made it too long sorry. the second point is commercializing it. while i do think people are wearing makeup to empower themselves more and more, makeup brands are capitalizing on it.  honestly it’s fucked up especially when u think about the many men who don’t even wear makeup own these companies and get money when girls buy full makeup artist makeup collections worth hundreds of dollars.

and also it kinda feels nasty. i hate the look and feeling of foundation on my face, even if it’s high end, and full eyeshadow looks just are too much a lot of the time. keep in mind i wear makeup pretty often and i do like how i look in it and i think im not bad at doing makeup, i just really always prefer the look and feeling of  a clean eyelid. this may seem like a dumb reason but it’s just... fuck makeup idk
