Oh look it's another crack theory!
Crowley is the current supreme archangel.
DO NOT ASK NEIL ABOUT FAN THEORY
Okay so hear me out, and look, I SAID CRACK! I have fun crack theories pop in my head every once in a while and I'm gonna write em down. It's not cannon with any of my other ideas or metas it's just *a thing*.
So! If you want to follow me down a wormhole of extrapolation, do so below!
Tumblr media
"There is always a supreme archangel!"
Michael said it not me! Blame her! But look, that line is a choice, and it feels there for a reason. Maybe there IS always a supreme archangel. Maybe it's not a job you're hired for, maybe it's something that's inherited like royalty, and transfers automatically.
The 25 lazarii miracle.
Okay yes, I think it's just love and angel/demon working together is more powerful than apart, shades of grey, all that. BUT nobody else thinks that. Heaven and hell do not think that. They do not think Az and Crowley should have been able to do that miracle by any means. So I'd assume they're scratching their heads, and Aziraphale does tell the Archangels initially that he performs the miracle alone, which I assume would have then been relayed to the Metatron.
"A miracle of enormous power happened last night, the kind of miracle only the mightiest of archangels could perform" ... "How do you know I didn't do it?"
Let's say I'm right, look I'm humoring my own theory aren't I? Does Crowley know? Would he be aware of what happened? Would he feel it? If he did I could definitely see him keeping that card close to the chest, but still being a snarky ass to Shax.
Crowley opens the file in heaven.
So he's at least a Throne or Dominion or above, probably even higher up than that. He says they never change their passwords, and if that's true what else don't they change? What else have they forgotten? Bureaucratic nightmares like heaven often overlook so many things, who's to say a certain high up angel wasn't taken off all the books fully after they became a demon?
Why does the Metatron actually want Aziraphale back in Heaven?
I mean? Sure he and Crowley averted Apocalypse Part 1 last time I guess that's why, but couldn't there have been an easier way than a faux job promotion? I'm thinking: Gabriel is gone, the position of Supreme Archangel is automatically inherited, none of the Archangels in heaven are it, Aziraphale is suddenly accidentally performing a 25 lazarii miracle all by his lonesome? What if the Metatron thinks it's Aziraphale who has been chosen for the role of Supreme Archangel. But there's one thing he's over looked...
A clerical error.
What if it's not Aziraphale but it's Crowley. Crowley was formerly a high ranking angel before the fall. He's still able to access files in heaven, maybe they've forgotten to completely erase him from all the books and databases, and he was next in line, or maybe God just has a funny sense of humor. Angels and demons alike seem to just automatically listen to Crowley this season and do what he asks, Shax calls him "Arch-traitor" he seems like he might just know a bit too much more than he should, and the scene during the trial where Gabriel says, " However I am the only first order Archangel in the room or ya know the universe." Then the camera cuts directly to a close-up shot of Crowley? It's a bit too foreboding in my opinion to be nothing.
Final Thoughts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This comic is posted on Whickber street between Aziraphale's Bookshop and the Record Shop. Neil had asked that it revolve around the horrible crime of stealing halos. When I see this comic, I can't help but think that the original halo owner is very James Bond, a character our favorite snake like demon loves to portray. I wonder if Anthony J "just a J really" Crowley chose J for a reason more than just a J (maybe........... Jophiel?), and I wonder if he really was fully deserving of his fate during the fall or if there's a bit more to the story.

*gasp* Kotoko's violent she would have even attacked Amane A CHILD- Is the same as people going *gasp* Haruka hurt animals. We're ending trial two exactly how we started it with people acting like information we were expressedly told trial one is a revelation. That was definitely never ever alluded to or blatantly shown/stated at all.
This will never not be a fucking hilarious response. Each trial without fail someone somewhere literally goes- *gasp* The people we were told are murderers actually do bad things?! Like, yes, we're in the making bad choices, doing bad things, no- I don't want to change everyone else is the problem and I'm right series. Everyone in Milgram is like honestly a very self-serving inconsiderate individual with commitments to their personal beliefs first and foremost.
They're all the embodiment of did I ask for other opinions mind your business or support my choices- If doing either of those things is too difficult for you, then die. So the whole highlighting they did bad things and pearl clutching is like super funny. Like yeah, what a croc coming from me, the person who highlights them doing the bad things the most possibly. Yet just because someone does bad things doesn't make them a bad person, and just because someone thinks a person is good doesn't make them incapable of doing bad things.
This isn't some vague or callout either. Honestly, it's perfectly natural to see someone do something suspect and react that way to it. Yet staying on that knee-jerk sensationalized reaction long-term doesn't allow for progress. Yeah people are mad that a character did a bad thing now what can we learn from it, what can we do to make sure it doesn't happen again in the series, and more importantly what can we learn from the characters in the series mindsets that will ultimately allow us as people to avoid making similar mistakes.
The best thing about Kotoko's character is one hundred percent that despite for how messy her work is she still believes she's doing what's necessary, that she's helping, and others are just afraid of progress or too wrapped up in their morals to do the objectively right thing. She fully embodies the phrase it's messy work, but someone has to do it. A mindset anyone can fall into. It's easy to believe that whatever outcome you're working towards is more important than what you do to get there. That just because the outcome is good and well intended that even if the path is messy, it will work out in the end.
It's easy for people to ignore the tangible harm they cause others in pursuit of what they believe is a just cause. I feel like that's something that's been an integral part of Kotoko's character from the start. So, while yes, I personally love highlighting the means she uses to get to that outcome and the issues with those means. I fully recognize she is not just her means, and she isn't the only prisoner who has used the ends they were seeking to excuse the things they did to get there.
Like I enjoy Mikoto's character, I'd have to be a large ass hypocrite to ignore all the blatant similarities between the two of them. It's been a rather chill trial for me, and I've been enjoying it mostly because I'm not deep in the tags. Also, it is super funny to go full circle like this.
It really feels like we're getting into the thick of it now.

Asking this because I (for some reason) have yet to see a theory stating this (even though it must exist!) but waht do you think the changes are of Brienne being the person who gets Alaynes favor and her potentially competing on Sansa's behalf in a trial for the kinslaying allegations? Obviously Brienne and Sansa even meeting is hotly debated but with the direction the show went in I can't see Briensa (platonic) not happening!
First I'm assuming you meant kingslaying because I was like wait how did I forget Sansa being accused of killing one of her siblings omg?? alsdjf unless you mean "kinslaying allegations" ie she betrayed Ned in which case, if that does come up (it's certainly possible) it's not likely to come up until waaaay later because the only person who would care is like, Arya, really, (I think both Jon and Bran would understand Sansa's actions here) and I don't think it will escalate to Brienne having to fight a trial by combat for her in that case.
BUT.
THAT'S AN INTERESTING THEORY. I think the general consensus here is that they're going to meet somehow at the tourney and escape it together, and also, Shadrich will be involved and probably Bronze Yohn as well, but that's pretty much as concrete as I've seen anyone get (altho if anyone does have a more concrete theory, let me know!!!).
So firstly, I think this would match up with the Ashford Tourney Theory very well -> Sansa having all the same suitors, only for the tourney to get upended by a trial by the seven/the appearance of The Truest Knight In All Of Westeros. Brienne, being both a True Knight and a descendant of Dunk, makes the most sense for being part of the foreshadowing of this theory in my opinion. And that little note we got of GRRM's outline included that line "kill the mouse" which points to Shadrich being a problem for Sansa or Brienne or both in the coming twow chapters. However...some random hedge knight can't just make off with either Sansa Stark, Last Surviving Stark or Alayne Stone, Only Child Of Lord Protector Baelish, without causing a HUGE ruckus (look at her escape from KL - they needed a huge ruckus to cover up their movements!). SO. Considering he showed up with a bunch of other guys...maybe Shadrich and several others looking for Sansa accuse of her being a kingslayer and say they are arresting her and taking her back to King's Landing to face the king's justice. And just like Tyrion got free by having Bronn defeat someone, perhaps Brienne, who enters in the lists in the hopes of getting close to Sansa as a mystery knight, steps up to call for a trial by the seven. That would be a parallel to Dunk as well!
And in the chaotic aftermath, when Brienne (and Bronze Yohn maybe!!) has cleared Sansa's name, something goes awry (maybe Harry dies fighting in the trial, maybe Sweetrobin dies and Sansa tells Brienne she doesn't want to marry Harry), the girls decide to make a run for the Wall, to the only other known relative Sansa has left alive outside of the Tullys - her recently revived bastard brother Jon Snow.
As for gaining her favor...while I'm fairly confident that Brienne saves Sansa and they leave together from the Vale, the state in which Brienne shows up is really up in the air. She's just leaving from whatever the fuck has happened with Lady Stoneheart and Jaime. Maybe she's injured. Maybe she has no money. Maybe she sees Ser Shadrich there and decides she's better off disguised. It could make sense that she enters the tourney in an attempt to see if she can find Sansa in the crowd, spots her, and asks her for her favor. Cue Shadrich accusal, trial by seven, and escape.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm. Interesting prediction anon, I'd love to hear what other people think.

On Ivan and bipolar disorder (part three)
This is my favorite part of this whole thing. I haven't written it yet, that's literally the opening line, but here I'll be talking about one of the most interesting (to me) aspects of Ivan's character: how the other characters perceive him; I already know I'll be having a blast writing this. Internal vs external perception is probably my favorite topic when it comes to character study, so I was thinking of doing something similar for Dmitri as well in the future because I noticed some things that I want to talk about. I'll think about it.
For once I don't have to make an introduction where I explain what I'll be going over in this because there's none to be made, so let's start from the beginning. The first time we see Ivan is when they're all waiting for Dmitri at the beginning of the book, and what does he do? He takes the piss out of everyone, of course. And I think that in everything that happens there and in the following passages (I was particularly struck by Father Zosima's words about him, which I've already mentioned in here) we pretty much have the key to Ivan's character, and he doesn't even give it to us himself (very fitting indeed). The first thing we find out is that Alyosha is afraid Ivan will be condescending towards the monks and while Ivan technically isn't, he still adopts a subtly mocking tone with them, which checks out considering that Miusov says Ivan feigns arrogance to mask his own insecurity. Also it's very telling that Ivan's demeanor changes when it comes to Zosima, I feel like he actually does respect him and to some extent appreciates his words. Funnily enough I've found myself in a similar situation in the past (atheist surrounded by nuns, my family was there, they told me some things I appreciated; I wasn't making fun of anyone though I swear) so I get it.
Speaking of words, there are many used for him in those chapters, and there are even more as the novel goes on, brushstroke after brushstroke painting a rather confusing and contradictory picture of this young man: he's bright yet insecure and "a tomb", he's weird and a misunderstood outcast in his own family yet he's charming (said by multiple characters in multiple occasions, I think it's the word that's used the most to describe him) and refined, yet again eccentric. He's paradoxical and a riddle (another word used multiple times), and his own father fears him more than he fears the son who almost beat him to death and at first I couldn't understand why, considering everyone else's opinion of Ivan and the fact that Ivan actually helped get Dmitri off of their father when he was beating him, but then I went back to Book Two and stumbled upon a line that managed to completely go over my head in the past (how could that happen? God, the horror!) that does explain a lot and looking back now, to me feels like one of the most important lines (about Ivan) of the whole novel:
What seemed to [Aleksej] strangest of all was that his brother Ivan, [...] who alone had such influence on his father that he could have stopped him [...]
I don't think I need to explain why I think this line (that you can find in The old buffoon for context) is crucial so I won't say much about it, but it also explains why Ivan's presence in the Karamazov household is seen as a guarantee for quiet and order (as stated during Dmitri's trial, and we also see it in the fact that both Dmitri and Pavel had in mind to murder Fyodor only if Ivan had been out of the picture, though for different reasons), and honestly it surprised me: I mean, Ivan's influence over other people plays a very important role in the story, but him having influence over his father? Fyodor Pavlovich Karamazov? Wow. Also I have something else to say about the quiet and order thing but it belongs in part four.
The rest of that line is also interesting in my opinion:
[...] [Ivan] sat now quite unmoved, with downcast eyes, apparently waiting with interest to see how it would end, as though he had nothing to do with it.
This, maybe trivial, line never really left my head, which means it must mean something to me. Maybe because that behaviour fits Ivan's character so well and I always like when he gets to act like a normal, unbothered, and even childish at times, twenty-three year old (he's not even angry there, what a rare occurrence) and because according to how the other characters speak of him, it feels unexpected (and turned out to be useful for this post).
Back to how others speak of him, someone (Fyodor I think) goes as far as saying that maybe Ivan deliberately seeks torment, which honestly feels a little too familiar to me and that's why that's another line I can't seem to get out of my head; when people have such a high opinion of you they do tend to blame your own struggle on you, at least in my experience, as it's their only way of rationalizing it. You should be better than that, you should be smarter than that. But you're not, so maybe you actually want it; why would such a brilliant person be like that otherwise? You're not allowed to be "weak" and I think Ivan is a perfect example of this as he has internalized this concept, but I'll go over it in part four.
But what does all this have to do with bipolar disorder? I'm getting there, but you'll have to bear with me because this whole thing gets quite intricated at this point and I have to be as clear as I can (and I can't, ever), so let's take a seemingly nonsensical step back to see the bigger picture.
None of the brothers are stupid: Dmitri is naive, impulsive and uneducated, sure, but the narrator does describe him as a fairly intelligent man in spite of it, Pavel was basically a child prodigy and a very smart young adult (and maybe I should talk about it sometime because everyone in the novel considers him to be capable but stupid and there's only one person who explicitly recognizes his intelligence in a genuine way apart from the narrator, guess who), and Aleksej, while also uneducated, isn't stupid either. But there is a particular emphasis put on Ivan's intelligence and it's hard to find a paragraph where he is present or where someone else is talking about him that doesn't mention it. Ivan is bright, Ivan is educated, Ivan is an academic. It's pretty much the first thing the other characters think of when thinking about him, it's almost some sort of morbid fixation. And it's not a positive thing either as it does nothing but feed into his insecurities and Pavel even uses it against him by telling him how intelligent he is over and over until he officially loses it. Ivan is smart to the point of being charming and admired, but that turns out to be a double-edged sword (of course) because everyone puts him on a pedestral and higher the pedestral, deadlier the fall, as we see in the second half of the novel. In my opinion the only one who seems to view him as a human being and not as some sort of ghost or higher, detached entity (apart from Zosima) is Alyosha; Dmitri considers Ivan to be better than everyone else including himself, Smerdyakov is...well, Smerdyakov, his father's attitude towards him is basically I don't understand what's up with him and I don't really care (in addition to what I said a few paragraphs ago) and even Katya is charmed by him more than she loves him, at least at first. Everyone else doesn't even really know him and that's partially his own fault, but I can't blame him.
Why do I consider this bipolar coding? To make it short, intelligent people are often considered charismatic and many psychiatric studies suggest that there's a link between bipolar disorder and high intelligence (which to me personally kind of feels like a consolation prize, like nature saying hey, you'll hate being alive but at least you're not an idiot!, thanks a lot I guess) and it's also worth mentioning that bipolar disorder is linked to creativity as well since Ivan has come up with multiple poems over the years, which means he must be a creative person to a certain degree. I haven't been citing my sources because this is not an academic paper and I'm just some guy on Tumblr who doesn't even study psychiatry and just happens to be basically cursed, but there's a book about this topic that I want to mention: Touched with Fire: Manic-Depressive Illness and the Artistic Temperament by American psychiatrist Kay Redfield Jamison; I've also read her (very relatable) autobiography and I'm a big fan of hers since she knows what she's talking about even more than the average psychiatrist because she has bipolar disorder herself. For anecdotal evidence, I keep a mental list of historical figures and artists (including contemporaries/celebrities who are still alive) diagnosed with bipolar disorder (so if you ever want to know if someone has/had it hit me up I guess) that I won't include here for obvious reasons, but let me just say that the doctors who did the aforementioned studies do seem to have a point (and I'm an artist myself). I want to make clear that I'm not trying to play into the overused, boring, inaccurate, and generally uncomfortable (for me at least) mentally ill tormented genius trope/stereotype and that it's obviously not what Dostoevsky was going for either; it's just that I've personally had people fixate on my intellect my whole life (not to mention the general weird fascination the average person has for mental illness and mentally ill people as well) and seeing Ivan go through that same experience combined with the studies I just mentioned made this association inevitable for me. Also people seem to find you more fun and charming when you're manic/hypomanic (only when you're the "right" kind of manic/hypomanic of course, when you're experiencing dysphoric mania/hypomania people just become ableist because that's the "wrong" kind of mania/hypomania, duh) which is...uhm...I don't really know how to feel about it honestly, but it's a fact so I'm mentioning it.
But what came first, Ivan's self-isolation or people's misunderstanding of him as a person? Is it the former that caused the latter or the other way around? To me this feels like having to talk about the good old chicken and egg dilemma and I still haven't figured it out in relation to myself, so I guess this will remain unanswered for now (or forever). But what I do know is that bipolar disorder is a lonely experience, no matter how hard someone tries to not make it lonely; people just don't get it even if you explain yourself a thousand times over and over. It doesn't mean you don't have relationships with others, it just means you know you have to keep some things to yourself sometimes and you get used to it, which seems to be Ivan's case too; to me the best example of it is when he's just about to tell Alyosha about the devil but stops himself from doing so and decides to push him away instead. In my opinion it's also connected to his inability to show "weakness" that I already mentioned and that is often one of the core experiences of living with bipolar disorder, but I won't go over that now. I'll just say the problem when it comes to Ivan is that everyone (the readers, the other characters, even himself) gets tangled in a net of performance; living with bipolar disorder feels like having to constantly keep up a certain kind of act (that I wouldn't even know how to explain) in front of others due to the stigma, and I'm pretty sure that's the case with every neurodivergence and invisible disability (bipolar disorder is in fact a disability and I'm legally disabled, that's why I mentioned ableism earlier). Ivan knows what people think and expect of him (we've seen it in his first real interaction with Alyosha and I've already talked about it in part two) and we see few moments when he goes mask off, and apart from those moments his facial expressions are always described as being forced or "off" in some other way. One thing that struck me is the significant contrast between what Mrs. Khokhlakova in particular says about him and how we actually see him behave when he doesn't bother with his forced coldness and collectedness (usually by himself or around his family): she talks about how refined and chivalrious he is multiple times because that's the side of him she sees (and almost everyone else sees), yet he's the character who swears the most (I don't know if "swearing" is the right term as in the novel there are no actual curse words in the modern sense but he doesn't really speak kindly does he); his language is even worse than Dmitri's. I'm not saying that being polite in public/formal settings and swearing like a sailor in private/informal settings is something unusual because I'm also like that (as I'm afraid you might have noticed, sorry for all the swearing!), I just wanted to point that out because to me it seems important in general and relevant for this post.
This doesn't mean I think of Ivan as a fake person because I would have to have that same opinion of myself and I don't, it's quite hard to explain if you haven't lived the bipolar experience first-hand or don't really know what masking is and I hope you'll understand what I'm trying to say here; it's just that he hides and polishes some parts of himself due to a combination of childhood emotional neglect, mental illness, and a personality that's difficult on its own (but really, when you have a disorder like this one it's quite hard to tell what's personality and what's mental illness, especially because at times they're one and the same; it shapes you and sometimes you can't even do anything about it and to me it's no surprise Ivan's sense of self is as warped as it is), all factors that contribute to his partially self-inflicted isolation. I mean, he does say himself to Alyosha that at first he kept him at a distance on purpose and you can also find a glimpse of that in his own philosophy: he openly says that he loves humanity but dislikes humans. He can only show affection from afar and I think that also reflects in the situation with Pavel and in Ivan's own guilt: I don't think Ivan lacks empathy (quite the opposite), he just doesn't have the tools to do anything with it. Could he really have done something? He says he would have if Pavel had explicitly told him to stay in their father's house (here the conversation shifts on the physical aspect of things as Ivan now feels guilty for also being physically distant from his family and not only emotionally), but Ivan's words are never really reliable. How can we expect someone who's incapable of getting close to people to help them? Even when trying to help Dmitri escape prison he's still rough with him. There's a reason why his thing with Katya is a mess as well and he refuses to admit that he loves her (he even says to Alyosha that he doesn't like her and he's with her only to prevent a catastrophe at Mitya's trial, which are later stated to be lies by the narrator): he always tries to convert his feelings into reason, otherwise his whole façade crumbles.
I also want to mention Ippolit Kirillovič's words about him at the trial because they seem very important to me, but only very briefly because first, many things he says have already been talked about in my other posts and second, it seems a little unfair to leave the other members of the family out because Ippolit Kirillovič says many interesting things about all of them; maybe I'll make a post about that in the future. Basically, Ippolit Kirillovič doesn't particularly like Ivan because he got the better of him in a couple public arguments they had in the past (very funny to me by the way), but he still prefaces his criticism of him by talking about his positive qualities (once again, his vigorous intellect and brilliant education) and saying he was welcome in their community (but not in the same way Dmitri was). This is yet another case of me not knowing where I'm going with this, but this particular instance stood out to me so it was worth mentioning; I think it summarizes the other characters' attitude towards Ivan quite well, but I can't really explain it.
Another thing that I noticed is that no one ever calls him by a nickname, not even Alyosha. I wrote a post about the use of names and nicknames in The Brothers Karamazov months ago but I hated the way it turned out because I felt like I wasn't making any sense so I decided to throw the whole thing away and I don't even know if I should try writing it again. Anyway, it's very interesting to me that pretty much everyone is referred to by a nickname (even Rakitin of all people) except for Ivan; not even Alyosha calls him anything other than his name (and if I remember correctly not even Katya, who talks to Ivan using the informal you, does). Actually, there are a couple instances where this does happen and that drives me even more insane because the first one happens at the beginning of the novel, when his father calls him Vanya a few times only to never do it again (and honestly Ivan didn't seem to like that either), and the second one is Rakitin mockingly referring to him as Vanechka when talking about him to Aleksej (because of course he'd never call Ivan that to his face and I also have a feeling he'd get decked if he tried). I don't really know where I'm going with this (again) but I wanted to throw it in anyway because it always stood out to me considering the only main characters that are never referred to like that are Fyodor, Ivan, and Smerdyakov and well, there seem to be implications here. In the aforementioned deleted post I wrote about this topic I mentioned sense of belonging (Mitya belongs there after all) and affection/connection (everyone loves Alyosha) in opposition to being excluded (Smerdyakov is not a legitimate son) and being unable to connect with others (Ivan is an outcast due to the multiple reasons I went over in the previous paragraphs). Maybe I really should try writing it again.
Well, I think I'm done for now. I found it a little hard to separate the themes of part three from the ones of part four, because the latter will focus on Ivan's self-perception (among what happens from Book Eleven to the epilogue and other, more "medical", things) but we see how he perceives himself through the devil but the devil is not an actual real person in the book so I couldn't really include that here and in my mind the themes of these two parts kind of blended together so I had to to figure out where to break them apart.
This took longer than usual (which bothers me but oh well) because I had to take a break from pretty much everything (which is why lately many posts have been queued) for a while due to the February-March period always being whacky for me bipolar-wise, mostly because of the seasonal change (something that plays a huge role in this shitshow of a disorder and something I'll go over in part four because surprise surprise) that always makes me mentally and physically tired. All of this, which can be summarized with bipolar disorder bipolar disordering, to say that I hope this part isn't as messy as it seems to me and that I hope you can't tell I wrote it during a time I wasn't getting enough sleep (I swear I did my best given the circumstances), and if I "disappear" or interact less from time to time it's usually because of this kind of stuff. I'm still not getting enough sleep by the way so I might take a break from serious posts again, I love that daylight savings time happens during one of the worst seasonal changes of the whole year for me every year and it doesn't mess with my disorder at all.
It sure didn't help that I chose to make part three more complicated than the others thinking it wouldn't go in a completely different direction than I had originally planned and wouldn't therefore have to reorganize my thoughts during a period I simply couldn't do so; I will obviously be punished for my hubris. But until then I'll be working on part four (and some other unfinished stuff I have in my drafts and have no idea when I'll post), which will be the last part of my bipolar Ivan Karamazov essay.

Shuichi & Kaito's fall-out post-game
So Kai talking about his hc is what lead to this
Kai: every once in a while i think about what if Kaito realized he has no actual fucking clue who Shuichi really is. like he considers him his friend and insists he knows alot about him, but one day he realizes that a large chunk of what he "knows" about Shuichi is either assumptions he came up with and forgot were assumptions, or are things Shuichi masks with and aren't really true about him. i just love the idea of Kaito suddenly getting his whole view on Shuichi shattered and having to totally reevaluate how to be his friend
[timeskip]
Hina: Kaito isn't a bad friend but man sjsksksk
in my heart of hearts (in which Kaito goes to hell no matter what) he is tho, I think he'd get in denial about it instead [the convo has been going in the direction of Kaito trying to get to know him for real & prove himself as a friend], and most likely try to instill in Shuichi and everyone that he knows better and Shuichi is the person he made up in his head, just like he did with Maki right after meeting her, with the whole trying to force her to be the girly girl he thinks she should be in canon. Like, Kaito at his core is an only child who was spoiled by his grandparents and never told no, he thinks the world spins which way he'll wish it to
Hina: I think Kaito is a bad friend in canon, 100% but for me personally, I usually pick and choose what parts of Kaito I like to keep lmao This is a postgame headcanon, but after the game I'd like to think he's one of Kokichis biggest advocates, even more so than Shuichi There's a small difference between the moment where Kaito says he's not sure if Kokichi was lying and postgame And it's Kaito actively dying for the rest of the class It's one thing to say you're dying to save everyone, it's another thing to actually commit and do it I think in a postgame scenario, where Kaito actually has had to confront those final moments before his death and realize exactly what a "heroic sacrifice" means, it changes his opinion completely He might not agree with the actions Kokichi took to get there, but the fact that given the choice, he chose to lay down his life to put a stop to the game. He wants to believe that's for everyone else. He can't fathom the idea that anyone who does that could possibly be selfish
oh, if it's post-game it's worse on Shuichi angle tho, I get that he [Kaito] could change his mind about Kokichi after this (he'd have trouble admitting it tho), but for Shuichi it means that the mess of 4th trial and what followed happened between them
you can't tell me he wasn't impacted long-term after, actually they both should feel betrayed, Kaito did openly show that to him this was Shuichi turning against him and was ready to cut him off and lead the group against him, but Shuichi crawled back to him like the wet dog he is, I want post-game Shuichi hesitate before disagreeing with Kaito on something minor and then let himself finally feel hurt over this
when it hits him that he can't pretend it's all fine because they made up and that he has outgrown the need for hero-Kaito and is now letting him stifle him because he got used to being under his shoulder
Sini: Yeah, Kaito did him dirty. I get that Kaito felt betrayed, but Kaito was so pissed at him and for what? For arguing against him when he turned out right? For accusing Gonta even though it was a class trial? Or… Given that Kaito admitted to being jealous of Shuichi…. Was it all because of jealousy? Is he still jealous even now? Kaito apologized yet Shuichi is still playing the sidekick to Kaito’s hero as if everything is still the same
I want the realization that they're not fine to hurt him like a bitch, I want him to be just trying to wish it away, asking for it to go back to the way it was at the start, because he still hates confrontation and is more tired than ever and is still scared of not having a hero, doubting himself per usual, he still needs Kaito, doesn't he? (all he needs is a friend)
Ves: shuuichi just wants ONE thing to stay stable but alas
Sini: He is both angry and wants to lash out yet wants to keep things as is. He’s mad at Kaito but also wants him to still be his friend
and I think Kaito would only double down on being a hero post-game, because surely everyone needs one right now, somebody to still put on the cheerful act and give them something to look forward (he refuses to notice how denying equal ground & mutual support is fucking up everyone in the training trio and honestly anyone who cares about him)
also if he just believes strongly enough he'll be fine eventually
and there's parallel to Kokichi probably also doubling down on his act, hoping they'll leave him to rot (think "I'm damaged, far too damaged"/lyrics)
Ves: the idea of kokichi doubling down on his act postgame makes me ILL get up boy i am outside your door w hot cocoa and a therapy dog
(thinking back to Barely a Planet, Barely Pluto) he can get the dog, but you're not entering his isolation tower, this poisoning attempt has been thwarted

BAD JOE'S DRDT CH.2 CRIME SOLVING THEORY PART 1
So, I've been viewing and reviewing the videos for DRDT Chapter 2 up until the latest available episode (being 9 at the moment) and I've come across with so much information. Lots of subtle, yet interesting things. Thanks to those, I was able to connect a lot of dots and come up with a theory that just makes so much sense and I'd like to share it with you all. Before I dwelve into it, I'd like to repeat myself by saying that this is MAJOR SPOILERS and in case you wanna try to figure out the mystery by yourself or in case I end up being right with my theory, but you want to get those reveals happen as the videos are uploaded, then I'd definitly recommend all of those concerned people to immediatly stop reading and enjoy the ride that Danganronpa Despair Time has to offer. For those who want all the spoils, then let's do this. It's showtime!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step #1 : The sneakiest, but biggest clue
In episode 9, also known as the first part of the 2nd trial, we get to the part where the attempted murder on Ace is revealed (which was definitly bound to happen) and Nico, surprisingly enough, they take the blame. Some of the fans have a split opinion about this, based on what I've noticed. Some say that they're probably covering for someone, or that they attempted to save Ace and so on. I figured I'd take another look back at the crime scene of the attempted murder not only because of this, but also because eventually, we're gonna need to find out how it actually happened back then. It might end up being useful to learn for this chapter, it could definitly be related after all.
But what I end up discovering, I never expected to find a piece of information that can reveal so much about this chapter. I recommend you to watch Chapter 2 Episode 6 to watch the clue I'm referring to.
Let's first watch from 19:41 to 20:31, the part where Teruko is investigating the crime scene in the fitness room. She notices a couple props that we're also able to see. There is however one prop that's shown on the crime scene, but not mentioned by Teruko.
Tumblr media
The roll of tape! The very same tape that Ace's killer used to stick the wire to the fan, which is also most likely the same tape Arei's killer used to put it on the bars of the carousel (IT'S SPINNY THING!!!).
Wow, you found the roll of tape! Why does that matter?
You'll see very shortly. But first, take a good hard look on where the roll of tape is positioned. Now, play the video at 20:31 and pay attention to the speech bubble. The bottom part of the crime scene is harder to see now that it's darker, but it's still transparent enough. At 20:37, you can still see the roll of tape barely. At 20:39, it moves Teruko's sprite, so the tape is hidden behind her. At 20:49, for a brief moment, the roll of tape is still barely visible. But then at 20:50, Ace wakes up. (dum dum DUM, he's not actually dead!) Nevermind him though. Here comes the most important part. 20:54...
Tumblr media
The roll of tape is gone!
Wait, I don't understand... what does that mean?!
It's eitheir an error made by the creator, which quite honestly, there's absolutely no shot that this is the case for the simple reason that this is a background that the creator made. There's no way a prop that's part of the background can suddenly disappear unless they made another background, but without the tape. Why would they decide to change backgrounds at that specific moment?
So if it's not that, then that only means one thing : one of these three took the roll of tape!
No! That's ridiculous! It can't be!
You better believe it because thanks to this huge hint, it narrows down the list of suspects by a lot as to who murdered Arei. Let's not forget... we already established that this tape was used at the playground, the real crime scene and that based on the narrative, there exists no other roll of tape of that kind due to two factors : MonoTV cleaning up the fitness room (Episode 6-7) and Rose confirmed that there used to have tape in the fitness room (Episode 7). So now, only one of these three could've done it : Ace, Teruko, Eden.
There's no way the blackened could be Ace!
You're right. It's actually impossible. He's been nearly killed, he's wounded and his mind is set on anything else but murdering Arei. Also, no offense to Ace, but I don't think he has the smarts to pull this kind of murder scheme. Even if he did, we'd have to worry about him leaving blood traces on the roll of tape. The odds of that happening seem fairly high, but there's no blood sighted on any of that tape, so... He's out.
There's no way the blackened could be Teruko!
You're right. It wouldn't make sense. She is the protag, so it's be very weird to see her go so soon. Not only that, but unless it's for self defense, she literally has no motive to kill any of the cast at the moment. Remember, she's the only one who's totally fine with not escaping this killing game, just living here. So she's out. There's no way the blackened could be Eden!
... heh! Are you sure about that? Are you thinking this because this is one of your favorite characters or because deep down, you know that she's very kind and wouldn't hurt a fly?
Well... sorry for breaking the news, but disregarding the fact that she's the remaining valid suspect out of them three, she definitly has the motive and skills to pull it off. But putting that aside for now, take a look at this.
Tumblr media
This was a couple seconds before Ace woke up and the roll of tape disappeared. This definitly shows the possibility that she could've taken the roll of tape as she was investigating. And we all missed it because of this explosive distraction : Ace waking up, shouting. When he shouted, he also pushed Eden which could've been the perfect moment for her to take the roll of tape without anyone else noticing.
That's right, ladies and gentlemen! I accuse Eden of being the blackened!
Nooo! Why eden?! I don't want to believe it! She had no reason to kill Arei!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step #2 : The simple, yet heartbreaking motive
That reminds me, let's talk a bit about one of the most popular topics this chapter in this community!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've seen so many people come up with ideas as to which secret it belongs to who, especially since some of them could potentially be pretty incriminating in regards to the murder this chapter. Maybe some of these motives could play a part this chapter, but it's very hard to tell as we don't have a lot of information on that end aside from the motives we already know who it belongs to, but aren't related to the crime.
And it's true that cause of that, there's been a considerable amount of arguing going on between the cast, which could've resulted in a murder. But otherwise, for the time being, I would like to claim the following...
None of these motives in itself have anything to do with the murder of Arei and the attempted murder on Ace. This is just a giant distraction, a red herring to throw us off track on what actually happened. We don't need to know everyone's motive to solve the murder mystery.
While it is fun to theorize who could be the secret murderer, who's the manipulator or who's the main cause behind the killing game. I think that until proven otherwise, they're unrelated to the crimes this chapter, but will play a major role in the future chapters. Why would Eden commit murder then?
Let me ask you a question. Aside from their names starting with the letter A, what does Ace and Arei have in common?
Why does that matters? The culprit for Ace's attempted murder is-
Nevermind that for now. Focus on what they both have in common. One of the main reasons why there was so much arguing happening this chapter. That's right! They're both bullies! Ace's quite the bully, especially towards Nico (which we learn in the later chapters why that was the case). He was often causing a ruckus in the dining hall. It was not pleasant for anyone. Granted, Ace didn't really bully Eden much, but that's not the same case for Arei. Arei was pretty mean to Eden, even back to chapter 1. But chapter 2 was when she was pretty nasty. Back on chapter 2, episode 5, Arei bullied the crap out of Eden to the point where she exited the playground, crying. Here's a video for reference, as a reminder. (I recommend watching the vid of chapter 2, episode 5 from the beginning to 3:40)
Granted, later on, we learn that she did it to make Eden stronger, so that she doesn't become an easy prey in the future. She didn't really enjoy making her cry, she was just trying to help in her own way. Unfortunatly, Eden didn't really get to hear that as she was probably already far gone by then.
She heard something else however right after Eden left the playground.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even though she was not in the playground, Eden most likely heard it : Arei being evil, a bully who only wishes misery on others. And that's pretty much the moment where Eden had enough. She snapped. That. was the motive behind it all. The cataclysm that broke this kind person's mind.
Hold on! That can't be right! There's no way she heard that!
Nope, that's wrong! We already have some proof that she could've easily hear it. There was the interaction between Ace, Levi and Teruko in episode 2. When Ace left the fitness room, Toruko talked crap about him, then Ace came back running, shouting and whining that he heard all of that. Then there's this!
Tumblr media
The suspect herself claims that these walls aren't soundproof, so she is very well aware that things can be easily heard through the walls. So there you have it! The reason why she did it : to get rid of the bullies once and for all. Now then, let's talk about another big thing that caused some conflicts with the problem solving.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step #3 : Connections on the murder attempt
The mystery of the attempted murder on Ace is actually pretty interesting. There's a lot of likely different scenarios that could explain what happened in here. Most seem to conclude that culprit behind each of these crimes is not the same person. But what if I were to tell that it's actually the opposite?
That's right! I'm claiming that Eden planned and carried out both crimes at the same night without any accomplices!
But that's ridiculous! On Ace's attempted murder, Teruko found wires. The only person who could have that is Hu! She has wires according to the weapon list. So Hu is definitly involved!
Initially, I thought the same thing. Hu seemed incredibly suspicious because of that discovery.
But we've all been had! It was a ruse and sneaky trick by the creator by making us believe that it was her because of the glaring hint. But it's actually another red herring.
Aside from the computer lab, there is actually another source where the culprit could've gotten their hands on wires, but it's very subtle : the clocks.
The... clocks?
Tumblr media
That's right! The very same clocks that Eden wanted to use to decorate as an activity with Teruko. It kinda suggests that she must've taken them. It's possible since the activity was cancelled because of the bullying. And inside those clocks, they contain wires... I think...
Tumblr media
Not something I'm entirely sure of. But based on some research and some chat with a friend. The thing on the top right is copper wire. So Eden might've dismantle that clock with her tools and expertise and unrolled that wire. I gotta admit... I'm not quite knowledge about clocks, so there might be some misinformation. But I tried looking as much as I could and from what I gathered, most of the analog clocks have this kind of clock mechanism inside. So that seems pretty plausible, but feel free to correct me on anything related to the inside of clocks. Anyways, that's how Eden managed to get the murder weapon for Ace. In other words, Hu has nothing to do with the murder scheme on Ace.
But what about Nico? Why were they at the crime scene? Were they trying to save Ace? Were they helping Eden as an accomplice? Why don't they deny the accusations on episode 9?
There are a couple theories that could explain it, but I have one that makes the most logical sense.
Nico wanted to kill Ace for pretty much the same reason as Eden : To stop the bullying for good. Back in episode 6, it showed that they had the intent on killing Ace.
And that night, Nico was actually about to commit such crime, except that they were not as prepared as Eden. They were a tad late to, because at the time, Eden caught Ace off guard and brought him into the fitness room (something I'll explain later).
So Nico desperatly tried to look for Ace, get their revenge for the bullying. And because of that bloodlust, Nico's mind was probably hazy, not quite clear.
Then they found Ace in the fitness room, about to get murdered by whatever inventive trap Eden pulled. After that, I'm not sure what happened, but Nico broke the death trap somehow for whatever reason.
That's when Teruko and Eden discovers the crime scene and at that moment. Nico comes back to reality and looks at the situation they're in. At the time, they didn't know Ace wasn't dead, so Nico legit thought they killed him. So they panicked, they got stressed, they felt guilty and ran away.
That way, it would explain the reasoning behind their whole behavior and why Nico thinks they're responsible for the murder attempt.
But hold on! There's no way she could've done both of these crimes by herself and there's nothing that shows that they're related.
There's actually some similarities between both crimes.
For starters, they both use rather complex murder methods. Upon closer look, it looks like both of these seem to have some kind of mechanism involved which gives another reason to suspect Eden considering her ultimate talent. She works on things that has mechanisms, so it's nothing new for her.
Secondly, the state of both victims. No I don't mean Ace's neck being cut and Arei's neck being snapped. I'm referring to what else there was to learn about their bodies. Disregarding the red marks on Arei's wrists, we, as viewers, learned that there's no other kinds of injuries involved.
Meaning that they didn't get knocked unconscious with a blunt weapon of some kind. There is only one reason we learned that they might've fallen unconscious against their will : Rose's missing turpentine. Once again, not something I'm an expert at, but I'm guessing it must've been used kind of like chloroform, right?
Considering that it's Rose's custom weapon, it probably exists only one of these. Therefore, the most likely scenario is that the culprit used it on both victims.
Come on now, that's impossible! There's no way she could've caught two people off guard!
Nope, that's wrong! We actually have proof that Eden is more than capable to pull it off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you can see, she was able to sneak on Teruko. So she could've done the same on both Ace and Arei. This is undeniable proof!
But wait, if she snuck on both of them, then that means...
That's right! Not only did she actually intend on commiting a double murder, Eden also planned on doing both at the very same night!
Bull****! It's impossible!
Oh, but it is possible! Why else would she pick the roll of tape after the investigation on Ace's attempted murder? There's also a lot more to this than just this fact.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step #4 : The requirements to kill Arei
So ever since Arei's bullying, Eden did a lot of planning and preparations. Like a whole lot! It's actually quite impressive! Once you find some hard proof and then connect a bunch of dots, you get to uncover quite a considerable amount of information on what's behind the culprit's mind. Right now, I'm here to lay it out all for you to learn as well.
Before she captures both victims, there was some preparation work needed. There's some that we already know. Stealing Rose's turpentine which is easily doable by anyone as Rose tends to be easily distracted. Grabbing Arei's rope which could've been grabbed by anyone as Arei discarded it, so monoTV put it in some kind of storage. Obtaining wire from dismantled clocks, I've already discussed this earlier, so this is obviously something she would do in advance.
And then there are some more subtle prep work involved. That rope... she had to set it up somewhere first before pulling off the whole murder scheme. But for that, she first needed to go to the movie screening room. The culprit needed to place the rope in a specific spot to put her plan in motion and it was somewhere through that room.
Tumblr media
Here is some proof showing that the movie screening room and the playground are connected.
Tumblr media
The culprit must've placed the rope on one of these metal thingy (I don't know the proper term) so that the rope would dangle on both sides, most likely reaching (or almost reaching) the floor of the playground. This was most likely set up at night, to not get caught.
That can't be right! I don't think Eden is strong enough to punch through walls and besides, we saw the movie screening room. There was nothing suggesting that the walls have been damaged!
That's right! There is no signs of punching into the walls or any kinds of damage at those walls. The culprit used her smarts and skills to get what she needed.
She used her tools to open a panel of some kind. Wanna know what's the best part? We have proof of that being possible and it's actually way back in Chapter 1, Episode 1.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you saw on Eden's sprite, she definitly has tools. Even her custom weapon is a tool : the wrench! Granted, I doubt you could open this panel with a wrench, but maybe she needed it elsewhere, who knows?
To further confirm this rope setup, we also have more proof suggesting this possibility. It's back on Chapter 2, Episode 8.
Tumblr media
The culprit must've moved one of these tube lights by accident and was unable to place it back for whatever reason. Or maybe they simply broke it. Eitheir way, this proves that my theory with the rope works.
Okay... then what?
Then it was time to go for the offensive! At nighttime, she probably baited Ace and Arei at different times through whatever means, then snuck up on them and get them unconscious with a cloth full of turpentine.
Next up, Eden placed Ace in the fitness and then she placed Arei's body eitheir at the playground or hidden in the changing room within the dress-up room. It couldn't have been the relaxation room since it was closed at nighttime nor could it be the fitness room since this was the death room for Ace.
The culprit definitly set up the death trap for Ace first because of the discovery of the roll of tape that I've shared with you all at the beginning. This discovery means that Eden took the tape to use it in the playground after setting up the murder on Ace. What was the actual death trap at the fitness room though? To be honest... I'm not quite sure yet. It must be involved with all the stuff that Teruko found during her investigation, especially the broom and stepstool since they're not from the fitness room originally.
I can't quite picture yet how the whole mechanism was designed, but at the very least, we know that it involved the fan and the wires. The wires was most likely around his neck while the fan was continuously rotating. I think that's what matters the most, at least. I'll let you guys know if I can figure out how the whole thing works.
Alright, you got the murder scheme on Ace sort of figured out. But there's no way you can figure out the one for Arei!
Heh! Think again! I have a fairly good idea on how that murder scheme works.
Although... I'll be honest... this is not quite originally my idea. I'm pretty sure I heard of this theory somewhere eitheir on tumblr or youtube, but it involves a quantity of props and the seasaw. So whoever that was, thank you!
Regarding the prepping time? She also gathered more, but it could've been done during the night of the murder. We have the water jugs,
Tumblr media
a bunch of clothes,
Tumblr media
and we have the roll of tape that Eden picked to do this! (And something else, but I'll get back to it later)
Tumblr media
But what about the dead fishes?! Why are they here?!
I'll get back to it later. For now, don't worry too much about them.
Now then, here's how the culprit did it.
She attached the rope at the base of the carousel so that the rope would be pulled as she would turn it.
She rolled the bars of the carousel with the same tape so that the bars wouldn't be slippery as she rotates the carousel
On the other side of that rope, she attached the two jugs of water to it.
She readjusted the rope's positioning to make sure that the jugs of water would land on one side of the seasaw.
She surrounds the jugs with clothes to increase the odds of hitting the target.
She places Arei's alive, but unconscious body on the other side of that seasaw (mostly the neck) while probably attaching the wrists to the ground with the remaining tape to make sure she doesn't move too much.
She rotates the carousel, pulling the jugs upwards.
As she reaches the maximum height, she would release the carousel and let gravity do its work.
BAM! Arei's neck gets snapped and she dies.
Then following this, a few other things happen : the rope goes through the handle of the jugs from impact, the rope probably gets snapped in two from the impact as well, the clothes get wet from the spilled water (from the jugs) and the ground gets damaged from the corpse's sudden movement because of the impact of the murder.
Here is the proof to confirm this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another thing to note which could further explain why Eden is the culprit. I believe there was another use for surrounding the jugs with clothes. She wanted to add a "silencer" to her murder weapon.
In other words, because Eden knew that the walls aren't sound proof, she wanted to commit the murder as quietly as possible, to make sure no one else hears it.
After the murder, she had a few remaining things to do :
She used the first half of the rope to make it look like Arei has been hanged at the swing set.
She used the other half of the rope to "hide" it under the carousel
She grabbed the empty jugs, the two pieces of tape used to hold the victim's wrists and the ball of clothes.
She threw away the pieces of tape and the empty jugs in the trash can.
She hid the ball of clothes somewhere in the dress-up room.
And that, ladies and gentlemen is how she got away with almost a double murder and pulled it off in a single night.
But when did she pull off Arei's murder? She was with Teruko since the encounter at the dress-up room up until Ace arguing close by the students' rooms.
It should be pretty easy by now. She did it right after everyone went back to their rooms. That's when she went back to 2F to resume her murder scheme.
But that whole plan creates a contradiction with this and that!!! Without an accomplice even! It's impossible!
Don't worry, I do have a valid explanation to most of what seem like an issue and it actually makes sense.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step #5 : The finishing touches
Alright, let's tackle what seems like the biggest issue.
We definitly saw Arei alive the following day. So your time is murder is invalid!
No, that's wrong! You probably mean this, right?
Tumblr media
Sorry to disappoint, but that's not Arei. That's actually Eden disguised as Arei.
How is that possible? She looks nothing like Arei!
No, but with a couple preparations and props, you can definitly put on proper disguise. I have two pieces of evidence that proves that this is possible and logical.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The dress-up room in itself is proof enough. Eden could've taken a copy of Arei's uniform in here, there's a wig that looks like Arei's hair and most importantly... Do you see the pink, heart shaped box on the brown desk? That looks like a make-up kit, doesn't it? So Eden could've easily make herself look like Arei with this.
As for the glove, I'm pretty sure that's the only reason why Arei's corpse doesn't have her glove anymore. The culprit was forced to take it from the corpse to fully complete the disguise.
But there's a bunch of people who saw Arei at lunchtime!
Yeah, but did they really pay attention to her at the time? Weren't they distracted by Ace whining on high noon?
What about Teruko? She cleared stared at Arei during lunchtime, so she should've noticed if it wasn't her.
Nope, that's wrong! We have proof explaining this issue.
Tumblr media
When Veronika was telling Teruko that the character in a certain movie she watched looked like Teruko. Teruko would deny it by saying that the character's hair and eyes aren't the same colors.
So Veronika then concludes that she might be face blind. Being unable to recognize someone from their facial appearance.
It's not quite confirmed that she has prosopagnosia, but it's highly suggestive. Therefore, because our pov is practically the same as Teruko's, what we saw is what Teruko thought was Arei standing there at lunchtime when it was actually Eden disguised.
Both the lack of words from "Arei" during lunchtime and the fact that we don't see Eden's actual sprite in the dining room proves that this theory is possible.
On episode 7, Teruko, Whit and Eden were the first three to discover the body, yet the BDA bell made a sound. That proves she's not the culprit!
Nope, that doesn't prove anything. In fact, that's just another sneaky that the creator pulled on us.
Let's think of this differently. If we follow the logic that Eden is the guaranteed killer, then you have to ask yourself : why did it still ring?
From what we've witnessed...
Tumblr media
She says this line right before Teruko opens the doors to the playground. Why would she say that suspicious line?
Was she nervous? Was she scared of something? She was actually scared of something that could've happened : the BDA not ringing.
If it didn't ring, it would've been game over for Eden. It would've narrowed down the list of suspects by a lot. She was afraid that this outcome would happen. Why? Because she thought that no one else discovered the corpse before them.
Yet, it did. Meaning that something unexpected, which worked in Eden's favor, happened : someone else discovered the body.
So now, we have to ask ourselves the next question : who discovered the body first?
We probably have a couple candidates suitable for this, but we have one specific individual who fits the criterias better than anyone else. Someone who's been acting suspicious since after lunch time. Someone that would fill in the few holes in my theory. That's right! The first person who discovered Arei's body is David.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What about the dead fishes?
Good thing that this is being brought up because the person responsible for placing those dead fishes all over the playground is actually David himself!
What? You don't believe me? Alright, let's go through each event from David's pov. Starting from lunch time (after the attempted murder on Ace) to evening.
He's eitheir looking for Arei after lunchtime or he's just roaming around the place for whatever reason.
He finds Arei's body sometime before late evening. He probably has a lot of negative emotions flowing through him.
But most importantly, he is confused, yet determined about one thing : "Why is she dead so soon? I saw her at lunch time, so she must've been dead sometime between then and now!"
He goes to the kitchen. Eitheir to spend some time alone, away from the corpse to think about this or because he was looking for something in the kitchen. Something like a knife maybe? You know... for revenge's sake. (This is definitly possibly because when David met Teruko, Charles and Whit, he didn't expect them to be there so late) and doesn't wanna join their late dinner because he's not in the mood.
After whit's suggestion, he goes to the relaxation room.
Upon taking some time to decompress and focus, he thinks of some facts he learned about the school's features. Like the fact that there are fans in the playground that can dry up wet stuff pretty fast and the fact the doors of the relaxation room are closed and locked during night time.
That's when he comes up with a plan : he takes the fishes in the relaxation room and places them in the playground.
That way, it'll help pinpoint more accurately the time of death of Arei and possibly find the culprit who doesn't have an alibi within that timeframe.
Unfortunatly for him, even though he was trying to help, that plan of his is actually gonna mess up the group for quite a while. Because as we know, the actual time of death was the night before the day he discovered the body first.
How did he catch those fishes?
Well... good question. I guess I may be slightly off with the ball of clothes theory that it's been used for the seasaw mechanism.
It's possible that it might've been used by David to catch fish more easily. Or... maybe the ball of clothes was used by both Eden and David. Yet another possibility.
Whichever is the case, there's probably an easy explanation for this.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
And there you have it! That's my whole theory about chapter 2. The whodunnit, the howdunnit and the whydunnit.
There are probably some other wacky, slightly valid theories that could work with someone else than Eden as the culprit. But personally, I feel like this is the theory that makes the most sense within the danganronpa theme, within the narrative, within all the hints we've been given. It almost feels like the creator is whispering to us that this is the way.
But hey, chapter 2 is not over yet. There is still quite things that has yet to be revealed. Heck, I never even mentioned the ripped up message in the trash can. Mostly because I don't to do with it since it's kinda missing clues. But maybe it will be connected with Eden's murder subtly, or maybe it'll be something entirely different. We'll see.
Until then, looking forward to see what's gonna happen in chapter 2 episode 10. Will I be right? Will I be dead wrong? Will I encounter a few errors where I'm gonna have to revise my theory? Only time will tell.
Thank you for the curious people who took the leap of faith to read this from the beginning to the end. I hope you had a good time. If I missed anything, feel free to let me know!

Showed my father (80 yrs old) Milgram trial one yesterday, and his takes are scalding.
Haruka- Guilty (he saw him bludgeon someone with a rock.)
Yuno- Abstained (He asked if he could not vote on people, and I said yes. He explained that he wasn't voting on her because he didn't know what happened.)
Futa- Guilty (Due to him being my friend's favorite, did not watch the video fully. Decided solely off that.)
Muu- Guilty (stabbed a person on screen)
Had this fun conversation though-
"What does she mean sorry spells? She's casting spells like doing magic-"
"You know when someone apologizes for doing something but doesn't really change their actions after."
"Oh, like your sister."
"Yeah, like her. I mean, you said that, not me."
Shidou- Guilty (He asked to be voted guilty. Then said regardless of what happens, he'd still be guilty when the morning came. Did what I did and assumed verdict wouldn't change his mind and if he was that adamant about it what he did was fucked up. You don't say shit like that when you've done good things.)
Mahiru- Innocent (Told him this was Star's favorite character he jokingly said Guilty then switched to Innocent. Commented on Mahiru's in his opinion large feet said her hands were nice, though. Stated after that, he hadn't seen what she did or her kill anyone, but since Star liked her, he was willing to say Innocent instead of abstaining.)
Kazui- Innocent (He didn't see him kill anyone. However, this did not mean he didn't drag the old man from the position of someone older than him. Forty is half my dads age when he was forty he was very much still fucking around and finding out.)
"This character reminds me of you a bit he's the oldest here going on forty."
"Hm, okay-" seconds into Kazui's video.
"What the hell is wrong with his pants?" Me internally, huh?
"What do you mean?"
"In the part there! Something was wrong with his pants." Rewound and paused.
"Oh, they're tight." Directly in the crotch area causing a very literal bulge to be seen if he moves a certain way. Huh, "Isn't that how fitted suits work-"
"No, they're supposed to be smooth/relaxed. not tight. Guilty he can't even get his suit pants fitted correctly-" He basically explained that suits that are fitted correctly shouldn't have that tightness in that area. They are supposed to well ya know fit the shape of one's body, making them more comfortable to walk in and cover it in a more natural way.
Which is something we see in Kazui's Birthday art-
Tumblr media
As he's sat in a wide spread position, but it's significantly less pull than what he wears on stage in Half. So, my fathers' comment literally pointed out that Kazui may be wearing a suit that was made for someone else. In a same snake, different skin way.
Amane- Abstained (Didn't see her do anything wrong explained the cult aspect, and he still abstained but laughed at Amane's belief that her murder was religiously right, which means it can't be wrong.)
"Oh, she's adorable- how could she have killed someone?"
Me making swinging motions
"Oh... she seems like a good kid, though."
His response was very much she seems like a good child. So, I have no questions here. I didn't see her kill anyone and the cult thing doesn't really change my mind. So, I'm abstaining. For context sometime earlier "Oh this is that friends favorite guilty hang him by his balls-" Futa had a good life before guilt by association ruined it again.
Mikoto- Guilty (Saw him commit murder.)
Before even starting the video-
"This character is my favorite."
"Oh, yours- Guilty, guilty as sin if you like him he must've done that shit probably the most fucked up one here."
"Hey, you're right, but hey!"
Kotoko- Guilty (Saw her commit murder.)
He was tired of all my nonsense by this point but it was very fun.

I actually think it was really neat of Anipoke to (mostly) stop chopping up and clumsily sewing together characters/arcs/plotpoints from the games in an attempt to center Ash entirely while still being able to point and yell "Look!! It's that thing that happened in the game you played!!!"
Like. For the majority of the anime, Ash would literally just replace the protagonist of the game and if they're lucky said protagonist gets a severely reduced role/importance and plays support to Ash for the rest of the generation. They might have some holdouts from their original arc and characterization but most of it's given to Ash and they get to go...Do Contests and Be A Girl and Maybe Have A Crush On Ash.
I'd say Sun/Moon is least guilty of this, but only just slightly, and it's absolutely not blameless considering how it downranked the Trial Captains to schoolmates who sometimes stumble into trials with Ash and how a large chunk of Lillie's in game role was given to Ash instead.
But guess what? This is barely an issue whatsoever in the Journeys anime?
During Journeys, Ash stays at the Cerise Institute as a research fellow. Which isn't a thing in the games. Ash's companions are Goh and sometimes Chloe. Who do not exist in the games. Ash's whole main goal is to win the World Coronation Series. Which does not exist in the games. And thats great!
Ash repeating the same repetitive gym badge/championship journey cycle every season, usually with major characters from the games who have been forcefully contorted to varying degrees into a support role , and then just running off to do it all again? It got a little old.
It's honestly refreshing to actually see him in a plotline that was written for him instead of shoehorned into the writer's best imitation of what his newly demoted companions did in the game.
It's even more refreshing to see him mostly engage with character's specifically designed for this story (which also allows for other characters from the franchise to appear when/how it feels natural and have a life outside ash instead of the previous season's style of watering down the characters and waving them in your face while giving their achievements/arc to ash).
More than anything else it's refreshing for one of the character's designed for this story to be made as an equal partner to Ash with their own unique personality and arc also originally designed for the story the anime is telling!
The storyline for Journeys isn't exactly revolutionary or never seen before in the Pokemon franchise. "Win big competition" and "catch every pokemon" are both pretty standard goals. But the story being told didn't need to be completely unlike anything else in the franchise. Pokemon plotlines are usually pretty similar even from one game to another and I wouldn't expect complete originality from the anime. The story being told just needed to be a story of it's own with characters of its own. And that's what it is!
In my opinion, Anipoke actually feels like it's standing on it's own feet as an addition to the Pokemon franchise instead of a slightly out of place remix of whatever the most recent game is featuring incredibly forced protagonist, Ash "the world revolves around me" Ketchum, for once.
The change in how Anipoke has been written is genuinely a good and needed switch that mediates the issue of how stale the Anipoke plot was getting, gives it at least a little bit of identity outside of whatever the current game is, and let's a lot more breathing room exist in places where Ash once would've been forcefully crammed into the spotlight for no good reason.
Which is honestly what annoys me so much about half the Anipoke fandom being up in arms about how "Goh is given too much attention" or "We don't get to explore Galar enough". Would you people rather we go through Galar, collect the gym badges, take part in the championship, and lose horribly, featuring companion girl Gloria who has a crush on Ash for some reason and wants to become a Wooloo Herder and barely gets any character development or something completely stupid like that? Is that your ideal? Cause to be frank, I found it in poor taste the first four times they went with that idea and painfully stale the next three.
I'd honestly prefer the Journeys anime and Goh any day and I really hope Anipoke stands it's ground on this matter.

Serotonin Booster :D 🐉
How to train your dragon edition
Here are some things I had forgotten or little details I just noticed on my rewatch, maybe even Unpopular Opinions 🤭👀
✨Race to the Edge✨
SEASON 6
I love how the twins were basically the reason Hiccup figured out that Johan was the spy
NOOO THE WAY GOTHI WENT TO TRY AND STOP STOICK FROM THROWING AWAY HER MEDICINE AND THEN GOT THROWN OFF THE CLIFF WAS SO FUNNY [ep2]
Omg that fight between Hiccup and Stoick in ep2 was crazy whenever Stoick said "I'm talking to the expert in getting duped by Trader Johan" and THEN HICCUP WAS LIKE "but I was only duped for half as long as you were. So what does that make you?"
Awww the way both Toothless and Skull-crusher were trying to get them to talk
And also Astrid being the only one that wasn't caught by the Hunters right away, she's just superior bro
I love how both of them were right - Stoick was right to not trust the merchants and Hiccup was right about Johan's plan
Toothless is actually so strong like he's not only agile and clever, I mean he just flew up to the ballista and crashed against it and destroyed it without using his Plasma Blast 😎🤩
Mala and Dagur fighting over where the Dragon Eye lenses are gonna be hidden is hilarious. Mala is so calm I love it
I got chills when Atali was like "no, Hiccup, this is my island I will defend it"
I really want to know the origin of the Wingmaidens, like where did all these women come from? How come they're still there?
I love Minden and Snotlout's relationship, the way he tried to convince her to not give up AND SHE KISSED HIM!!!
Krogan's Singetail actually cares about him
Never gonna get over Adelaide Kane voicing Mala
Also Snotlout running when the dude had the razorwhip on him LIKE HE WAS LITERALLY FLYING AND HE WAS STILL RUNNING Y'ALL HAVE TO WATCH THAT SCENE I JUST DONT KNOW HOW TO DESCRIBE IT ITS IN EP3
Generations ago Fishlegs's ancestors were dragon hunters
The Loyal Order of Ingerman - decimated the Dramillion dragons, pushing them to the brink of extinction
Grump is amazing I love him
Dramillions - have both a lava blast and a magnesium blast. Omnivores. Still being hunted.
The Hunters were founded by Ingar Ingerman
The Dramillion trying to take the manacle off his tail🥺
And when Fishlegs threw his helmet and THEN THE HAND THING 😭🥺
I love the Dramillions they're so smart they learned how to get rid of the manacles by just looking at what Meatlug and Stormfly were doing 🥺
I just realized that the twins are 19 AND I FIND THAT ABSOLUTELY CRAZY HOW CAN THEY BE THAT OLD
I really wish we knew each of their birthdays like I wanna know which one's older and which one's younger
I feel like for some reason the twins would be the oldest ones then Fishlegs then Astrid then Snotlout and lastly Hiccup. Idk I'm still iffy on this
Most Thorstons don't make it to 19
I love the twins' relationship, they love each other so much that they would rather be alone and not form part of a clan than leave each other alone and the fact that other people know this too? Plsss like the only reason Gruffnut got them back into the fake induction trials was by telling them how bad it'd be for each other to not be part of a clan.
Titanwing Zippleback HOW DO THEY KNOW ITS A TITANWING IT LOOKS THE SAME AS THE OTHER ZIPPLEBACKS
"Ughh, what's the point of winning alone? Being a Thorston means nothing without him. We are one Thorston."
I love them and also technically Ruffnut won the induction trials.
THE LAST LENSE GOSH
Love how Fishlegs cares about global warming
I'm all Snotlout, Toothless and the Triple Stryke reacting to Mala and Dagur- I'm also Mala whenever someone tickles me I'LL KILL U
UGHHH I HATE HOW SNOTLOUT MADE HICCSTRID UNCOMFY FOR HAVING A DIFFERENT RELATIONSHIP
Astrid overthinking 🥺😭
"How would you like your yak cooked?" JSHDHHA
bro I love how both Tuff and Toothless noticed the betrothal necklace
"So want to deliver some scrap metal?" Hiccup baby? Why are you so oblivious?
At least he asked her if she was alright in the armorwing's island 😩
No but if I was Astrid I'd be pissed too, the dude saw a dragon eye lens from far way and didn't notice her betrothal necklace? 🙂😤
No I can't that scene was too harsh to watch, I mean I loved to see Hiccup noticing something was wrong with Astrid but then the way Astrid compared their relationship to Mala and Dagur's and then threw him the betrothal necklace... And the way he caught it too I can't- 😭😞😖😭😓🤧
Seeing the twins trying to capture Mala was hilarious JAHDHDHHSHA
I love how when they're fighting Astrid's still there for him whenever he's expected to have all the answers. She ignored her anger and went over to him and grabbed his hand and that single thing was what gave him confidence in a moment of panic 🥺
"I'm with you"
"I know"
That final Hiccstrid scene in Mi Amore Wing was just too perfect, we have Hiccup grabbing Astrid's hand to bring her outside and talk to her, the sunset in the background, every little thing Hiccup told her about being there for her and loving her with everything he had and that he should've noticed the necklace right away AND THEN THAT KISS WAS JUST AMAZING❗️❗️❗️ it was passionate and sweet and Astrid was blushing and then Fishlegs was all uncomfortable and Mala was like "okaaayyyyy😏" and Dagur like "alrighhtttt👌🏼" ig the only thing I didn't like is that Astrid didn't say I love you back 😭 but it's ok cause yk she does I just wished she had said it.
Baby razorwhips love the water
Tuffnut named the baby razorwhip that bonded with Ruffnut, Wingnutt
Top scenes of Ruff Transition ep7
Tuffnut throwing up in Ruffnut's mouth and Ruffnut throwing up in Wingnutt's mouth just do that he could be fed- seeing the windmaiden's reactions is the best lmao
Hiccup trying to teach Ruffnut how to fly (with his dragon flight suit) and then Ruffnut losing balance but Hiccup helping her regain it BUT we still get overprotective Tuffnut jumping off of Toothless to try and help but all he did was make things worse HIS SCREAM WAS HILARIOUS nonono and the way Toothless tried to help BUT AGAIN MADE THINGS WORSE 😩😮‍💨😂
Ruffnut finally figuring out how to connect with Wingnutt and fighting the dragon hunters and saving Atali was so badass and then Atali riding Barf 😭🤩
Hiccstrid kiss count (approximately) : 6😘
The way he slightly and carefully touches her face to reassure her that he'll be fine
The Singetail's only predator is the Skrill
The Berserkers used to use metal daggers to lure Skrills into traps. The dragon is drawn to it due to its electrical properties
VIGGO JUST DID THE HAND THING THING WITH THE SKRILL WTF
If I could have any dragon it'd be in this order
Skrill - it's so badass and powerful
Nightfury - it's badass, powerful, pretty, strong and fast
Deadly Nadder - it's extremely fast and agile, has multiple attacks and the spikes
Dramillion - has multiple attacks and is very smart
Just realized that ep8 is called Triple Cross because 1st Johan crossed Viggo 2nd Viggo fake crossed Hiccup and 3rd Viggo and Hiccup crossed Johan and Kogan
That episode was basically jusr to show Viggo's arc and the way he changed for the better and learned to respect dragons
That's why the Singetails wouldn't leave in ep9 whenever they were trying tp free the Deathsong- their eggs! They're in that island.
I can't with Hiccup and Astrid sitting together just chilling but with Astrid feeling guilty and Hiccup assuring her that he was also at fault 😭
I love Narrator/Author Snotlout! The titles of the chapters of his book remind me of the ones from Pjo
Stoick and Skullcrusher acting as 1 and being worried about each other 🥺 I love their relationship
Also the way Stoick bats off the shots from the Singetails with his axe just like Astrid. They're both truly warriors
No but Toothless asking for a head scratch from Gobber bc he's worried abt both Hiccup and Stoick🥺
The way Toothless tried to make Hiccup feel better- I mean the man blamed himself for putting Stoick in "his deathbed" it was just so awful seeing Hiccup in that state and the way everyone was trying to make him feel better but it was ultimately Astrid who managed to get through to him😭
I love it when they put scenes of the movies
I love how Astrid always knows what to say without lying
Looks like it's you and me, then.
Always... was that corny or-
Probably. Nice, though.
The way Astrid is so natural at being a leader and putting everyone on their places 🤩
That lil moment they had in ep12 where he holds her face and thanks her for everything and I just love them too much 😭
I love how Spitelout is so happy when he's beating ass, this dude literally goes "I'm sure I've had more fun than this. But at the moment, I can't remember when"
Have I mentioned I love the Dramillions before? I love them way too much they're amazing and the sound they make is so 😩 I love it
The Dramillion is a distant cousin of the Changewing which means the Titanwing Dramillion shares the de-cloaking ability with its subspecies.
Stormfly's spine clone was literally so badass, my girl was surrounded and she finished every single dragon flyer with it. Badass move. Wish we had seen it more throughout the series
It really pissed me off that Hiccup had to choose between getting Tuff, Ruff and Snotlout out of that sinking ship when he could've been following Krogan. Like ofc it was the right decision but that wouldn't have happened if the twins and Snotlout didn't follow Gruff into the ship :/
I love how strong Barf and Belch are! They literally carried the a Titanwing Dramillion on their own.
That scene when they figured out that the Titanwing Dramillion is not the King of Dragons but instead the last piece of the puzzle to get to the King of Dragons
When the Wingmaidens got to the battle it was amazing
Also the way Dagur was so proud that the King of Dragons was a Berserker and how Ruff was so excited to see Wingnutt and Snotlout to see Minden🥺
THEY REALIZED THAT BBYS AREN'T AFFECTED BY THE KING OF DRAGONS BC OF THE BABY RAZORWHIPS
that last Hiccstrid Scene where Hiccup is worried about Astrid's safety- I mean his face 🥺🥺🥺 and she told him that his dad would be proud and that she's proud too and when she was about to leave he held her back and kissed her 😭😭
Ik I said this before but I simp for Astrid as a leader, she's just so natural at it
Also I love how the King of Dragons has ice powers instead of fire
WAIT SO IS THE EGG THAT HICCUP FINDS IN THE FINALE THAT THEY GIVE TO VALKA IS THAT THE KING OF DRAGONS THAT VALKA CARES FOR IN HTTYD2?!!
Valka being friends with the Wingmaidens sits absoluteky right with me
no but the way Toothless hesitated when Hiccup told him to leave him and get the egg
I love how all the dragons arrived to fight the dragon flyers, it was just so poetical to me, the dragons finally getting to fight the people that hurt them 🤩
I FINISHED IT AND NOW I'M SAD!!! I loved the end tho and I'm glad we got to see Shattermaster at Dagur's wedding, also Astrid's outfit change- we love that. And them leaving the edge is just so sad bro 😭but I love how we got to see some "insight" ig u could call it on HTTYD2 😭 also seeing Snotlout and Fishlegs's love for Ruffnut start forming was hilarious

Ethics and morality... and how they're not the same...
Weird title, and I don't even know if I'll properly approach this one with all the topics I wish to this discuss in today's The Devil Judge essay, because a lot of things peaked my interest, I was debating on doing a separate post for each subject, but I'll do them all in here:
Starting simple
I know we're only 4 episodes in, but I want to break down the things that I often look for in a new show:
Cinematography
Soundtrack
Character building
Plot devices
Social commentary (sometimes)
Of course, these are things most people would consider basics, but I find that a lot of TV shows don't have enough balance in them. Also, cinematography and soundtrack are pretty up there for me because when a plot gets slow, or something like that, I stay for those two (biggest example: King Eternal Monarch).
The soundtrack in The Devil Judge is amazing and the cinematography can be a character of its own. They really get me hooked and are used as tools to properly tell a story. And I'll get into that further down this post.
The onlooker will never understand the actor
Experience is your best friend not only applies to job hunting, but it's true in the real world too. You can't truly weigh in on something unless you've experienced it yourself, you can give it your judgment and everything, but when bad things happen to someone, you'll never truly understand their pain. Am I bringing up because of the difference of mind in Judge Kang and Judge Kim's opinions? On how the public treated the minister's son? No. I'm talking about a very specific scene, where the cinematography told me to think that way and not the dialogue (it's that easy for my mind to be swayed). In episode 3, when the rich are about to dine right after the foundation's commercial for a better future, we see this aerial shot:
Tumblr media
What's interesting about this? The seclusion and the enclosed feeling it conveys as a counterpart to the poverty shots we were just shown. Yet, these are the people making ads for a better future, what do they know?
They live comfortably behind concrete walls with no windows to see what goes on apart from the bubble they live in. This idea is further enforced at the party in episode 4, where they're not even a part of the donations, and watch and mock from afar as spectators. Yet, these people call the shots. They even call it commenting, as if they were watching the pain of others on TV.
The intriguing personality and the duality it encites
Now, this was a costume and wardrobe decision, but it was also very well thought of:
Tumblr media
Judge Kim wears white and Judge Kang wears black. One is morally perceived by viewers of the show as morally good and the other is perceived as morally dubious at best. However, besides the costume and wardrobe thought put into this, we also have to think about the delivery of this scene and how it may further affect my detailing of this section. Judge Kang brings down the coats, and hangs over the coat to Judge Kim, he's the one who is making that annotation: You're pure, I'm tainted. This can have one of two interpretations:
Either Judge Kang believes Judge Kim to be pure and innocent due to his status as a rookie in the field
Or he believes Judge Kim to be morally white and himself morally black as he's looking at his brother's face and not at Judge Kim's heart.
Because most of the back story we're unveiling is through Judge Kim's perception, there's also an inherit bias we're having as well, because in Judge Kim narrative, he believes he's doing what's right and believes Judge Kang to be evil. In being served information about Judge Kang through Judge Kim's eyes, our bias is inherently skewed.
Another thing is that, when they put on the coat, they're standing in front of the other, as if the producers of this series are telling us they're two sides of the same coin.
The duality is made in more deceitful ways, which include:
A difference of classes that implies one has suffered while the other has not.
A difference of experience that implies one is more tainted while the other is pure.
A difference of age that implies one is a sly fox while the other one is is bunny about to be eaten.
A difference of temper that makes one erratic and the other logical.
Power dynamics
This one, in this one I could make a whole thesis based on just a couple of scenes in the drama. And you know I have to mention it: director Jung being the puppeteer.
Tumblr media
It may not be as unexpected at first, nevertheless it brings forward a lot of things I've wished to touch upon for quite some time now. A woman being a puppeteer of an old man in the portrayed dystopia that The Devil Judge is painting makes much more sense than more common demonstrations of these dynamics where it's either a:
A man of power being controlled by a bigger man of power.
A man of power being controlled by a seemingly man of a lower status.
A woman being controlled by a man of power.
Although, there's nothing wrong with those power dynamics, and if they were to be used, a message could also be conveyed, this one in particular works as a megaphone.
A subversion of power in such a way can be interpreted as a true indication of the weak overcoming the powerful. Why? It is not that woman are naturally weaker than men, but that in society, patriarchy has been a big factor in taking voice away from women in order to give it to men.
In order for Director Jung to achieve her purposes, it's smarter for her to do it under the pretense that an old rich man in power is the one calling the shots.
This is better exemplified by her stance when the old man tries to excuse his behavior, and what her moral compass is. I'm not saying I agree with her unethical conduct, but that her morality is directly impacted by the perception of the public of her as a weak woman:
Just because a dog bites a human does the person get dirty?
This is telling on how she perceives the actions of the old man in gropping the waitress. She didn't do anything wrong, even if you touched her, you are the dirty one.
While she's evil, it's a refreshing and deep evil.
The public's opinion and how there's actually logic in the show's portrayal
The public opinion can make or break a person, even if it's not on a public trial like this. While "cancel culture" barely works in today's society, a person's reputation is forever tainted. The show does tell that, but it also exhibits the scary downside of it, by showing how easily it was to make people accept flaggelation as a fitting punishment.
Tumblr media
There are many experiments that have tried to test the effect of societal pressure on an individual's decision and the effect of the authority's enforcement of power in the outcome of these decisions. Furthermore, theories based on analysis of human behavior not necessarily relying on experiments can also help break this down. What do I mean? Here's a small attempt at explaining:
Milgram Experiment on Authority: which measured the individual willingness to carry out actions that go against their conscience due to an authority's approval.
Argument from Authority; The idea that people are more likely to use an authority's opinion on something as an argument for their reason. This is often seen in science, where trusted authorities have done the research and offer it to the public. In here, authority bias also plays a role, as we often believe, at first, that an authority must be right.
Moral disengagement: basically speaking, because this is evil or bad, I'm not part of it and I most probably am not actively participating in it. One may disengage by moral justification, which means that before engaging in something that has been previously perceived as immoral, I'm changing my stance on it based on what I tell myself to be logical arguments. This particular form of moral disengagement is very effective in changing the public opinion. I'll be touching on another form further down this post.
Other factors played a part, but these ones in particular came to mind when public flagelation as a form of corporeal punishment was wildly accepted. First, an authority is the one telling them it's correct, to go ahead. Secondly, another authority (the minister) had previously shown approval to such unusual punishment. Thirdly, they are not the ones to be engaging directly in the act, and even if they were, it would be acceptable because an authority has told them so. They may even believe the punishment to be a necessary evil for the greater good.
In fact, the minister's son was actually correct when pleading his case, they were accepting it because it wouldn't affect them directly.
Regarding the cinematographic descent of the public opinion regarding the situation can better be exemplified by the old man we've seen through the episodes.
Does suffering justify misdeeds?
Today I came along the difference between excuse and reason. You may give a reason for your behavior, but it doesn't excuse it.
Not because I've suffered through shit, means I have to make you suffer too.
I may explain myself, but it's on the other side to excuse me.
Why I hate the unreliable narrator and why I love it so much
This story has been told mostly through the eyes of Judge Kim and what he hears and sees regarding Judge Kang, if anything, the narrative is very close to that of the narrative we've seen in The Great Gatsby. An enigmatic man is being narrated to us from the eye of a man who hasn't known him for a long time.
Tumblr media
How is that an unreliable narrator? The narrator has their own set of bias and moral standards which function as lenses through which they see the world.
Another way of putting it would be the way teenage romances are often written in a first person narrative where either of the two teenagers is the narrator, so the author can sell to us something as simple as offering a pack of gum as the most romantic act on earth. We're perceiving interactions through rose tainted glasses.
In this case, we're seeing the interactions through Judge Kim's eyes who doesn't trust Judge Kang from the get go due to his own preset bias.
The narrative becomes even more unreliable as we're not exactly sure if what Judge Kang disclosed himself is a fact.
The reason why I love this narrative is because it leaves a lot of space to make simple plot twists to a narrative and make them seem grand, and can elongate a story without making it obvious.
The reason why I hate it is because sometimes, in tv shows mostly, we as viewers can see the other side of the story and grow increasingly frustrated with the main character's prejudice and misunderstandings (I'm looking at you my beloved Beyond Evil).
Also, because I have to wait for a long time before I actually have a clear picture of it.

Basic Training
This post has been sitting in my drafts for months now, during which I've come up with a few ways I wanted to write this post. This is what I've come up with.
Tumblr media
Basic Training is the episode which made me hate Ben the most. The whole episode consisted him of being a stuck up brat only to be rewarded for it in the end.
This episode was the perfect opportunity to have Kevin in the spotlight and show how skilled and smart he is.
Gwen's presence in this episode was actually fine, there's no change needed for that.
Look, I know the shows named Ben 10 but we have seen Ben be the hero tons of times already.
And Ben being egoistic about his heroism is not something new in the franchise.
There have been episodes on the OS where Ben got a big head, yet I dont ever see anyone complaining about that.
Was is it because he was 10 that we excuse this behaviour? Nope.
15 - 16 is still pretty young and his attitude can be excused at this age as well.
My opinion? It was handled better in the OS.
There were times when Ben wasn't always the main focus.
Tumblr media
In Lucky Girl, Ben has his ' who's your hero?' Moment.
They showed Gwen feeling jealous and hurt by the fact she wasn't noticed much.
It was realistic.
Then the epsiode proceeded to focus on Gwen , having Ben being kind of like a sub plot to the story.
Towards the end Ben compliments her.
So yeah Ben got big head, but at the same time they shifted focus so that the audience wouldn't find it annoying.
Gwen was in the spotlight for a bit, giving people a break from Ben.
Tumblr media
Secondly  , in Be Afraid Of The Dark, Ben again is shown to be slightly stuck up, but towards the end of that episode he learns and acknowledges Gwen and Grandpa for help and understands his crime fighting is more of a team effort.
Tumblr media
In Galactic Enforcers, we are shown there are other heros besides Ben as well.
Ben wasn't the sole focus of that episode. Yes it was about him but also about the Galactic Enforcers.
I don't think he was shown to be over confident here , but it was nice to see some other heros in the scene.
Tumblr media
The Ben 10,000 episode focuses on how Ben was too focused on his job and the lesson at that was Ben needed to relax and have them Galactic Enforcers take the lead instead.
Again , his attitude towards everything was brought in focus but towards the end he learnt something.
Tumblr media
I recently started watching Generator Rex and I can't help but compare Rex's character to Ben's.
Rex is also proud , rushes into things and considers himself to be a hotshot. But they also show him being down ,having trouble with his nanites and actually voice out his insecurities.
He's still the hero, still has things go his way most times but it's not annoying like Ben.
( I've only seen like 7 episodes so far so I don't know if this going to go down hil or not but so far so good)
The issue with the sequels after the OS was that Ben was the focus a bit too much.
We as the audience were rarely ever given a break from him.
Other than a few conversations here and there about his attitude,  nothing really was done about it.
Gwen should've been appreciated more for saving Kevin and Kevin should've been appreciated for stopping Aggregor.
But they weren't.
If it had been Ben , they would've made sure to show him getting some sort of recognition or trophy.
Tumblr media
Back to the Basic Training episode.
We know he's the legendary Ben Tennyson, we know he's a hero. We didn't need another episode on it.
Instead the plot should've focused on Kevin. His skills, his abilities.
Ben would act the same but Magsiter Hulka should've put some sort of cover so Ben couldn't use the omnitrix.
Ben goes on breaking rules,  and having a hard time being a hero without the watch.
Towards the end, it should've been Kevin who cracks the case and saves Hulka. Ben is mad he can't use the omnitrix but instead uses the guns and other weapons he's learnt to use at the academy
He's not amazing at them , but it makes him realise that he is hero , watch or not, something that has been emphasised in the show. Its not impossible for him to function without the watch.
Towards the end, Ben getting a 95 was a stretch. I'm sorry , but the guy wasn't great with using weapons and without the watch I dont think he would've been able to complete that hostage excercise.
I'm thinking more like 89%.
Gwen gets 98, that's fine and Kevin gets a 100.
Hulka comes in and awards the medal (?) to Kevin, suggesting he's becoming more like his father.
( im ignoring the ret con, plus the retcon I'm assuming wasnt thought off at this point by the writers)
Ben is shown to take one of the guns back to earth, because he thinks they're cool and he wants to practice and get better at them.
The whole hostage situation makes him want to get better at making strategies.
Yes he's good at improv, but he needs to learn to properly plan as well.
It doesn't matter if he's never shown to use the gun ever again, and he's back to relying on the omnitrix.
Or maybe some time down the line, he could use the weapon, even if it for a second, to show that he is improving and getting better.
Before you say 'he's already a hero, he doesn't need to learn anything ' sorry but no.
He's 16. He may have saved the world but he still has growing up to do. Different battles are going to arise all the time.
Saying he is perfect at 16 is dumb. Saying he's perfect when he's ben 10k , it'll make some sense. He's been around for a while and is pretty experienced.
The watch is a part of him, but seeing him try to explore other options would've been a fresher idea.
Tumblr media
Another scene that made me mad was the court (?) scene in Vreedle, Vreedle.
Ben being a hero shouldn't make him above the law.
Domstol ruling in favor of Ben just because he's the legendry Ben Tennyson was stupid.
After Ben's little monologue , and destroying Domstols desk, the judge should've just informed him that being a hero does not excuse him from following the law.
Kevin could've had his little moment doing some negotiation ( would've been nice to see how he works as con artist) and Ben could've jumped in and helped while making some good points for the argument, showing us he's not stupid.
Then having Domstol rule in their favor would've made sense.
On the way back to earth there could've been a joke about how Ben watches Judge Judy too much which is where he learnt about trials and stuff. Or maybe Gwens dad taught him a thing or two at some point.
All this doesn't mess with Ben's character all that much, he's still the hero of the show, he still has his ego but it makes him more likeable, shifts focus from his attitude, and shows us he's pretty smart and is growing into a good hero.
Ben's not a bad guy. I mean he is the hero of the show. There are tons of scenes which show he's good , like the whole sacrificing thing so the ultimates could live and all.
But little scenes here and there tend to be enough for someone , especially for someone who isn't a super hard-core Ben lover to form negative opinions on him.
Although calling him a psychopath / narc is out of line because I don't find him to be like that. His attitude was magnified by him being in the spotlight too much and writers not having a good balance in writing situations.
Ben being the main character of the show is at risk of becoming hated or less appreciated just because he's the font runner of the show.
Admit it, side characters tend to get more love most times than the main agonist of shows.
I've been watching videos on YouTube on this topic as to why this happens , and what I've come up with is that writers of shows tend to focus too much on main character. Things seem to go their way most times and this tends to get on peoples nerves, consciously or subconsciously because it's not exactly realistic.
Having shows where everything focuses on one person most times tend to backfire.
I don't mind Ben having a big head, I dont mind him making jokes and being so casual.
It's his defense mechanism to protect himself from drowning into the struggles and pressures of being a hero. But always having him be that way isn't good.
The writers should've executed it properly.
( okay this post got really long,  more than I thought it would. If you're read the whole things , congratulations on making it here lol.
I'm not going to stop anyone from replying to this because everyone has different opinions and we all have the freedom to express them.
Although I believe I've made my point and I've made sure to keep in mind all the arguments about why bashing Ben is wrong when he's not a bad guy while typing this out.
I don't think I've directed any major hate towards him , its mostly towards the writers for making the situations like that, but if you think I have you can reply to it.
I'm not gonna reply back though , because again I feel I've made my point.

Hogwarts Mystery but is actually Twilight in a nutshell:
Tumblr media
This incredibly plot exepident suspectly inserted trough a trials arc called "year 7 chapter 18" was...Chiara's back hurts for carring all the iconicity inside?
I simply cannot formulate an opinion about it.
It wasn't nor boring, nor slow.
I have to admit that I was exited to see how they've handled Victor, and let's remember that he's been on the top of the fan's thoughs for a considerable amount of time since he was released so I had high hopes, even if after Rowan's death I no longer belive in anything.
It's totally a ripoff of the pranks arc in year 5, I still have nightmares,(even if the shooting stars spell and MC & Badeea just randomly flying around as if they were in a Winx's movie gone wrong reminded me why I'm still addicted to whenever is Hogwarts Mystery) I adore how they made Vicotr casting Bombarda (now kids THAT'S how you make an impact. Not goofing around during History of Magic's class. Yes Corey, yes, I'm pointing at you.) and to be frankly all the Doxy's invasion was at least easy to annientate.
BUT.
"Hold the applause MC. I understand that I've just saved you, and looking good while doing it, but it's not time".
MY POLMOS ARE GONE.
JC, you play the UNO's reverse card too many times but this was gold.
Thank you.
BUT yuo know, there are always that parts who makes you wanna cry.
And yes Corey, I'm again asking you to shows up.
WHAT DO YOU EXACLTY MEAN WITH "HE'S HANDSOME"?
Tumblr media
Like, she's becoming the exactly stereotyped version of a teen having a crush with the best friend and the melodramatic romantic song included during an High school's movie setted somewhere in Vermont that you like to watch during Christmas break because your friends are all skiing in the Alps and you're stuck at home with your golden fish.
For some faces, her entire obsession with Victor reminds me to Rowan and Bill Weasly, but I'm thinking that maybe this time is more fragile?
Rowan said that Bill had a caring, mature, heroic side implemiemtg that he's onorable of respect, same Corey with Victor.
They're both childish in this (yes "I HAVEE TO GO TO THE TOILET". I remember. Then Rowan grows up and she manages to control her...Wedding's plan.) and they have the same traits that you would connect to a first love.
But while Rowan had some concrete ways for reputating Bill worthy of her attention, Corey seems more addressed to judge Victor by his appearance (oh come on is love at first sight, WHAT EXACTLY SHE DOES KNOWS ABOUT SEXY ANIME BOY?), and that's interesting because it could say something of what will come.
Or Corey will change thoughts drastically about Victor since the hype is in the plot-twist at OF COURSE the occasional tragedy will happen or she'll be so dramatically & irreversibly in love to do something surprising.
Only JC knows.
But guys, I can't end the most almost omicidial's rating chapter in Hogwarts Mystery without this:
"Either way, I'm glad I was along for the ride. And, you have to admit, it was more fun with me here."
"Can't admit something that isn't true."
Tumblr media
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
ROASTED.
WHAT YOU HAD FOR BREKFASTS DARLING?
We are overflying over the fact that with ONE damn line they compensated YEARS OF RUBBED OPPORTUNITY TO AMPLIFIZE her personality and distancing her from the usual cliché?
THAT'S MY JC!
Chiara deserved more screen time and happy to ascertain that she truly deserved it.
Do I've slept over the final scene between them?
No!
Do I need to talk about it?
YES!
The 'uuuuuh fierce' eyes are on another level of cringe but I'm scared, in the better of the scenarios he's hiding something and Chiara knows it, maybe there's like a feud going on Warewolfs and vampires wich could be plausible since they've pointing a lot on Victor and his begin a vampire in the Harry Potter's franchise to explain who others reality expect the wizard's one works so it could actually be a means to implement other aspects about vampire's.
But let's be honest.
That mischievous smile tells us a different story that I DON'T WANT TO SAY SINCE IT WAS LIKE TWO DAYS AGO THAT WE'VE GOT THE LOADING SCREEN.
JAM CITYYYYYY!!!

El hoyo (2019)
"The message needs no carrier" (spoiler: it actually does)
"There are 3 kinds of people; the ones above, the ones below, and the ones who fall. "
I've just watched this small masterpieces and here's my own interpretation.
Obviously the whole movie is a big metaphor. Both an analogy about our society and one about the Afterlife are present.
First of all, in my view, the place they're kept into is like a Purgatory between heaven and hell. The protagonist entered there voluntary because after the six months trial he would have expiated his sins and would finally be ready to enter Heaven. The old man is an accidental killer, therefore he doesn't deserve Hell, but definitely can't go into Heaven either, and his punishment is longer than Goreng's because he did in fact end a life.
Also Goreng is referenced multiples times as the Messiah, and his travel towards this purge tower is quite similar to Dante's one.
Each prisoner wakes up the first day of the month in a different position, which represents our birth. Some are born in better environments, families and countries and all of it is just luck, fate.
Then, since everyone knows that each of higher floors will likely take advantage of their position, our selfishness takes the best of us.
The higher floors know that the lower ones will literally eat their leftovers, while the ones under know that they better take as much as they can, otherwise they won't be able to survive. There's no altruism or generosity in the society.
You're placed high, you sh*t on who's below. You're below, you dream to reach above.
Each of the characters represents something.
The first roommate, the old man, is someone who's very aware of their surrounding, who's tired of fighting and knows very well how the world works because he's been in a better as much as a worse situation.
The lady coming from the Administration is a middle class representative, trying to change the world but also completely unaware of what's happening right under her nose.
The fact that she keeps on saying that a baby cannot be there and there are 200 floors is just further proof that we blindly lie to ourselves that things can't be that bad, that the world isn't that evil and the rules are respect, being delusional of course, to help us sleep at night. That's why when she hits lower than what she was told was possible, she killed herself.
She's also a vegetarian, with a big love for animals. She obviously represents both an activist that is trying to tell others that they shouldn't eat more than they need, because that means that who's lower won't have anything left, which is such a big innuendo to climate change, but at the same time she's also a privileged person who's never been lower than a certain point and thinks that anyone can easily "just eat less" without caring about other's issues (it reminded me of some vegans who cannot accept that veganism is not accessible or sustainable for the majority of the would population)
The last roommate, the one with the rope represents a religious person, who endures the hardship without giving up because of his faith.
Another pragmatic sequence in my opinion was the one where the two, while descending the tower, met an ill man with a companion with the Down Syndrome (I'm sorry if I'm sounding insensitive is just that I don't know how else to better describe the scene to make it recognizable to you) who said that he will proceed to suffocate his cellmate to also eat what went into his stomach even while being no more hungry himself, I mean, can you better descrive greed than this sentence?
Now, coming to the final scene, which left many of the viewers disappoint or confused, here's my idea.
The deranged girl who claims to have a daughter is definitely crazy, but not completely gone. I do believe there is a baby there, and the Administration is probability unaware of that because there's someone higher than them, and they're being lied to, also. But I don't think the protagonist actually saw the little girl.
I think that he reached such a place of histeria that he convinced himself that the baby was alive, hallucinating, to have a last strand of hope as he was dying. Notice how the baby is perfectly clean and well nourished, that would be impossible. The little girl is long gone and dead God knows in which floor but he convinced himself that he saw her as a way of also hoping that some kind of humanity is still left, that they wouldn't kill and eat an innocent and innocuous creature. But that's not the case.
Notice how he reaches the 333th floor and then walks like he doesn't even have a scar. Now multiply that number for each room residents, which are two. He's dead and has now reached Hell. There he finds his first roommate who's also in Hell since they both damned themselves letting their selfishness take over. The lady is obviously absent, since she never hurt a thing or specifically ate someone's flesh.
The baby was all part of his imagination and she doesn't reach the 0 level, simply because she was never there in the first place.
The girl could have been the message if she reached the top, since it would have proven how flawed the system is, but she never will. Some people claimed that it is not possible to reach the top because of how fast the platform goes, that it will just crash on the ceiling. I do not agree. There's no point in letting the platform crash each time so it will probably slow down enough to reach level 0, in facts we don't even know how tall level 1 is.
Someone also claimed that it's impossible that no one else ever reached the top through this method, which means to go all the way down to then come back up. First of all, it could have happened and that person could have been sent back down, but what I find most reasonable is that no one knows how deep the hole is, probably up to hell, and no one is brave enough to do it because no matter how bad your situation is, you're still afraid of having it worse. It's a suicidal mission which led to crazyness and then death even our brave characters.
Another reference I've loved is when it's mentioned that usually the poorest kill each other's to survive, while the richest have the highest rate of suicide. Why is that? Easy, they have nothing to endure, to live for, they have everything, they're not longing for the hope of food plus there's frightening in knowing that the next month it can only worsen.
So now the question remains: What is the ending then if the baby doesn't reach the top? The finale guys was right in front of our eyes, around the middle of the movie. Remember when the chef complains to other cooks about the hair in the pannacotta? That's the real ending: the pannacotta reaches the top (further proof that the platform won't crash) as the message but instead of being interpreted as a statement of insurrection, the level 0 workers believe it was sent back because there was a hair in there. This is the ultimate slap in the face, the final proof that those people are so out of touch, so blind towards what's happening downstairs that they think that was the issue, the hair in the pannacotta, without realizing that people are literally eating each others down there.
So, there was actually a satisfying finale which gave us answers, it's just that the finale was not at the end as usual.

Could you clarify Gonta and Ouma's relationship in game? I've heard that they actually hang out pre-chapter 4 (to the point of Miu saying they're spending all that time together because they're having sex, lmao) and his tears for Gonta after trial 4 were real, but a lot of people are arguing that Ouma saw him as nothing but a potential pawn/bodyguard, even before chapter 4. What are your thoughts on their relationship? Thank you!
This is definitely a complicated question and one thatrequires a lot of careful explanation, because of a lot of the events ofChapter 4. I’m glad you asked anon, because I’d like to do my best atattempting a little more clarification for this, because both Ouma and Gontaare incredibly important characters to the overall turning point of the game, and it’s important to understand their dynamic and the events that occurred inChapter 4 as a result.
That being said, I’ve mentioned before in a previous post, but I’ll reemphasize a little bit: when I say “relationship” when talking aboutthese two, I really do not ship them atall. I would not ever recommend shipping them. The ship is somewhat popularamong Japanese pixiv artists recently and might have boosted a little of itspopularity here on Tumblr as a result, but I can honestly say that I don’tthink it would ever, ever be a healthy shipping dynamic in any sense, and whenI talk in this post, I’m strictly going to be referring to “relationship” or “dynamic”in the sense of their actual interactions within the plot, and not in a senseof shipping them whatsoever.
Spoilers for Chapter 4 and onward will follow, so please don’tread past this unless you’re comfortable being spoiled that far!
To cover what I just touched on, in terms of shipping, therereally is far, far too much of a power imbalance between Ouma and Gonta for meto ever be comfortable with them in a romantic dynamic. Regardless of Ouma’sintentions, and the fact that he definitely did not want things to come down tohaving to get Miu and Gonta killed, he made the decision knowingly, and it’ssomething he himself doesn’t shy away from or forget. He did set up acounter-plan to Miu’s attempt to murder him, and he did manipulate Gonta intohelping him with that plan, and it’s true that had Ouma not taken Gonta to theremember light or pressed him on after knowing the secret of the outside world, two lives would not have been lost (although considering if Miu had actually gotten away with her plan to kill Ouma, there’s really no guarantee for what might have happened at the school trial).
Gonta is someone who trusts others implicitly, always triesto see the best in people, and is kind, gentle, and compassionate. Throughoutearlier chapters, but especially in Chapter 4, Ouma comes down hard on him, insults him, and tells him to “stop moping” or “focusing on what he can’t do”—andwhile these things are likely the same kind of act that he put on in order toforce Himiko to confront the promise she made to Tenko, it still doesn’t changethe fact that he says pretty awful things to Gonta in order to achieve theseresults.
These things are part of Ouma’s act and façade to make thegroup hate him, yes, but that doesn’t make them any less horrible, and he knowsit, and the player should be encouraged to remember it too, because it’s notsomething Ouma should be excused for or even wants to be excused for. A huge part of his character is aboutdoing these cold, pragmatic things that need to be done for the sake of hisplans, but it still nonetheless involves making ruthless sacrifices along theway, even at the expense of staining his own hands and ruining his one firmmoral guiding point.
To try and ship Gonta and Ouma in a romantic fashion oranything similar is just…really not good. Gonta doesn’t deserve to be put inany kind of shipping dynamic where he’s going to be seen as anything less thanequal, and there’s really no way to deny that Ouma doesn’t see him as an equal, but as a piece to be moved on agameboard. This is something really important to be remembered with most ships,in my opinion, but with this one in particular I’ll just say that it doesreally make me uncomfortable that people would want to make this kind oftreatment into something “cutesy” or “shippy” when it’s really not supposed tobe, and not portrayed as such by the game.
That being said, in terms of the plot overall, Gonta andOuma do have pretty important interactions with one another. As you pointedout, even in earlier chapters they spend quite a lot of time together, and it’seven noted  by other characters like Miu.Gonta plays an essential role in many of Ouma’s less-lethal schemes, such asthe bug fiasco in Chapter 2, where he used Gonta and his bugs as a distractionto go steal the motive videos and sift through them.
An undeniable part of why he relies on Gonta probably comesdown to the fact that yes, he does see him as one of the more easily manipulatedmembers of the group. As one of the only characters whose reaction is to trusteven Ouma implicitly, rather than to assume that he’s lying, Gonta and his sweet, trusting disposition mean that whenever Ouma does have a plan that needs beingdone, he always has a pretty accessible, physically strong member of the groupto rely on. This is pretty evident with the fact that he knew Gonta lookedlarge and intimidating enough to round up all the members of the group into theentomology lab while Ouma himself was off trying to collect evidence.
In that sense, people who say that Ouma has, to some degree, thought of Gonta as a pawn or bodyguard are not entirely wrong. I think it’strue that Ouma did think of Gonta in very straightforwardly chess-like terms asa piece to be moved at his disposal, and someone who could protect him orprovide physical influence in the group where Ouma lacks it. However, I woulddisagree to say that this is all he thought of Gonta as.
I’ve made many posts before regarding Chapter 4 and Ouma ingeneral, and the most essential part of his entire character is how contradictory he is. Everything, absolutely everything about him, pretty much comes down to being somewhere in amiddle ground, or else both things simultaneously, rather than put into eitherspecifically black or white terms. And it’s a brilliant writing decision, considering how his character design and color palette consists almost entirely of blacks and whites.
While Ouma did in fact think of Gonta in these cold, methodical, pragmatic terms like “how useful is this person to me and can Iutilize him as a bodyguard/pawn,” there was also, clearly a part of him thatwas at least somewhat grateful for the fact that Gonta believed him aboutanything at all.
As someone who manipulates the group from the sidelines intotrying to band together while feeding them clues, Ouma watches the actual “leaders”or “moral pillars” of the group with extreme interest. These include Saihara, naturally as the one who steps up to the plate and solves the class trials andriddles Ouma has been posing to him—but also, interestingly enough, Gonta. Assomeone who is relied upon and trusted by the rest of the group, and who onlyever has wanted to protect people, Gonta is not an intellectual leader, but anemotional one.
I know I’ve mentioned this before too, but Gonta’s abilityto trust others so naturally and so implicitly, and his overall friendly naturewas something I think Ouma envied. Cynical as he is, it’s clear that Ouma wouldlike to believe in “the power of friendship,” “happy endings,” and other suchoptimistic things, if only the situation were different. His behavior in theflashback we see of him and Miu talking practically confirms this, as his planto use the hammers and bomb to take down Monokuma is actually surprisinglyoptimistic and deals almost entirely on the idea that the entire group might bewilling to band together.
Gonta was a good person, and Ouma knew it. Regardless of thefact that he had been utilizing him for minor schemes and distractions inearlier chapters, I don’t think he went into Miu’s VR world planning for it tobe Gonta specifically that he used in his plan. In fact, he doesn’t seem tohave even considered using Gonta until Gonta volunteers to protect him when he’sabout to go running off outside. Then he has a moment of mumbling to himself, saying something along the lines of, “Maybe if it’s Gonta…if Gonta were to bemy bodyguard…” And it’s only after that that I think he finally went throughwith his decision to use Gonta specifically in order to stop Miu in her attemptto kill him.
The secret of the outside world is, in fact, horrible enoughthat knowing it in its entirety is enough to make literally anyone give uptheir will to live. It’s the motive Monokuma provided them at the start of thechapter, and even prior to entering the VR world, Ouma had already used thekeycard to go see it at the end of the mini-game route where the exit door waslocated. The remember light placed inside the VR world was supposed to show theexact same sight that Ouma had witnessed: a truth about the entire outsideworld so terrible and depressing that almost anyone’s will to live would becrushed instantly without an incredible tenacity to go on.
It is 100% true that Ouma did lead Gonta to the rememberlight, and that he encouraged him to use it, knowing that this would coincidewith his plans to have Miu killed before she could kill him. It is also truethat Monokuma placed this motive into the VR world as an incentive that all ofthe characters were encouraged to find and to use. And it is true too thatafter Gonta used the remember light and saw the state of the outside world forhimself, he was so horrified and distraught that he did agree to Ouma’sinitiative to “save” the group by killing them and sparing them from the hellthat was both inside the school and out of it.
Ouma presented his plan, did fully intend to manipulateGonta when he led him to the remember light, and was no doubt hoping thatthings would go according to said plan and that Gonta would agree to kill Miu,because it was really Ouma’s only real counter in order to stop Miu fromkilling him, since she had already made up her mind that she needed to get backto the outside world no matter what. It wasn’t a question of her just trying tokill him in the VR world: if that plan had failed, she was desperate enoughthat she would have just tried something else.
And Gonta did agree to that plan, because the entire point about the outside world and thetruth that it represented (an undeniable, horrible truth very different fromthe lies Tsumugi uses with later remember lights in order to try and boost thegroup’s morale again) is that it was literally just that bad. That horrible.Anyone, even the best person, would have their morals compromised and bewilling to do things they normally wouldn’t do after learning that kind ofsecret, because there was no longer any point at all in living.
The secret of the outside world was something the entiregroup was bound to discover at some point or another, be it sooner or later.Ouma introduces it first to Gonta, as part of his plan, but also to the rest ofthe group in Chapter 5 for entirely different reasons, coming down hard on themas an “evil supreme leader” who has declared that the entire killing game “isover” and that there’s no meaning in even going back to the outside world, asit’s entirely destroyed.
It’s certainly true, and important to not forget oroverlook, the fact that Gonta died as a result of Ouma’s plan. Ouma himselfdoes not try to overlook or brush over that fact within the game. And as I’vestated in other posts, the fact that this was an act that caused Ouma to breakhis one cardinal rule of not letting anyone be hurt or killed as a result ofhis own actions is something that devastated him.
People might or might not believe it according to their owninterpretation, but Ouma’s emotional breakdown in front of Gonta doesn’t makemuch sense unless you assume that it was real, because he knew the things thathe’d done in order to survive, and he knew that Gonta was a sacrifice that hecaused, and he really, honestly wanted to die. His resolve would have brokenthere, because he asks to die with Gonta, and it’s not even something Monokumaposes any objection to.
The only reason he stays at all and resolves himself tocarry out his plan to act like the worstvillain imaginable, is because Gonta (well, Gonta’s avatar, who remembered theweight of the things that happened in the VR world) asked him to stay with thegroup, to “be friends with them,” and essentially to keep everyone united andstrong. And that’s exactly what Ouma tries to do as an “evil leader,” by makinghimself into a villainous figure who he wants the other characters to despise.
If Ouma hadn’t developed at least some measure of realrespect for Gonta by the end—if he didn’t feel absolutely horrible about Gonta’sdeath—then there was literally no reason for him to have that breakdown infront of him. If he had truly thought Gonta an idiot and a fool and wanted to “rubit in his face,” there was no reason for him to not actually show Gonta that hehad “betrayed him the whole time.” That was what would honestly have caused themost suffering for Gonta, who was about to go to his execution anyway.
But he doesn’t do this. Not only that, but he does keep the promise he made to Gontaas best he can in his own way, even while still undoubtedly unstable andwanting to die himself because of the things he’s uncovered about the outsideworld.
Nothing can ever excuse the things Ouma did, and the factthat both Miu and Gonta die in Chapter 4 is something that leaves himirrevocably changed and far more desperate than he was at any point prior inthe killing game. He himself does not try to excuse his actions. They’re notsupposed to be excusable. And trying to ship Ouma with Gonta in any kind ofromantic sense, knowing that there’s a huge power imbalance and that Ouma was,in the end, willing to sacrifice Gonta, is really, really dangerous and notsomething I’m comfortable with.
But it’s also true that Gonta is one of the few charactersin the narrative who made a lasting impression on Ouma besides Saihara. WhileOuma was willing to cut out his own emotions and make that final decision to dowhat needed to be done in order to accomplish his own objectives, I wouldhesitate to say he actually thoughtof Gonta as nothing more than a piece. Gonta was someone who actually trustedhim, was nicer to him than most members of the group, and was a genuinely goodperson through and through. And Ouma was well aware of those things, and that’sexactly why Gonta’s death hurt so much, as did knowing that he himself wasresponsible in part.
I hope I’ve made matters a little clearer—I know this gotlong. But thank you for asking anon! While I would definitely say that shippingOuma and Gonta in any kind of potentially romantic dynamic is just flat-outunhealthy, there’s also no denying that they both are important to the plot, and that Ouma did, by the end, respect Gonta, and resent himself for the thingshe had to use him to do.
