Re: sickfics and recovery
Having lived with chronic pain for around a decade now, I can safely say that the worst part of being bedboud/housebound or stuck at home recovering for months isn't actually the pain itself. Like, it's bad--don't get me wrong! It makes you want to tear your hair out and punch walls and cry at the unfairness and helplessness of it all, but it's arguably not the absolute worst part.
The worst? Boredom.
You'd think that like, being at home, you can watch TV or play games or engage in your hobbies. You can nap and take life at a leisurely pace. Nah, doesn't work like that.
Humans need stimulation--even my autistic same-thing-loving ass gets tired of my Same Thing after a while. You run out of stuff to watch, games to play, books to read. That's assuming of course that your illness/disability doesn't directly prevent you from enjoying those activities.
Can't use your hands well? No crafts, no video games, no typing or scrolling. And if you're stuck in bed too, all that leaves is screen-based activities.
Need to avoid screens or eye strain bc of migraines? Too bad, that cuts out most entertainment options. Hope audio doesn't trigger your symptoms too!
It's just so, so incredibly boring and lonely. Everyone else in my house works, so I'm home alone nearly all day, every day. I can talk to my few friends online, if my hands and eyes and foggy brain can handle it, but most days it's just me and the cat (who wants to play but I just can't physically do it).
What do you do when you can't look at screens or use your hands? Sleep, if you're able. Talk to your housemates when they're around. Cuddle with the cat. Suffer through symptoms because you're so goddamm bored you'll take a headache over six more hours of nothing.
And the world keeps going. Laundry has to get done. Dishes need washing. Cat has to get fed. Throw the string toy even though it hurts your shoulder, unload three plates, put away your t-shirts. It's not leisurely, it's trading a modicum of comfort to stave off boredom for just a few minutes.
(I know there's a whole discourse about tagging whump and the disabled community in the same post, but this is about both. It's about me sharing a deeply personal experience for the benefit of both communities, of which I am a member. There's a lot of crossover between our communities, and I'm old (for tumblr). I've put in my time to learn the nuance.)

fic writer meme!
[RISES FROM THE DEPTHS] I'm here!! Thank you so much @uhuraisgay and @englishsub for the tags, and also for reminding me that I've missed Tumblr
1. how many works do you have on ao3? 50 even - which was more than I thought!
2. what's your total ao3 wordcount? 187,448
3. what fandoms do you write for?
My fic-writing impulses come along like cicada seasons, except without any regularity whatsoever: I do a lot of dabbling in a lot of fandoms, I can never really tell if something's going to light my brain on fire. Most of my fic output came from Yuletide for a long while (I loved the grab bag aspect and writing little treats for small fandoms, but then my holidays got busier), and then Yuri on Ice and MDZS were my biggest fandoms by far, especially MDZS. I've written Yuwu recently, and I'd love to write some Trigun, LoZ, or Mysterious Lotus Casebook one of these days.
4. what are your top 5 fics by kudos?
grow
the only way out
The Guests of Cloud Recesses
detente
bespoke
And the soft animal is our runner-up at #6!
5. do you respond to comments?
I usually don't unless it's a request or a question, but I read and treasure every one.
6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I am too tender for Bad Endings for the most part, but my canon-verse Nie Huaisang fic after me comes the flood does not end in a particularly good place for anyone involved. (But even then, we know it gets better for him eventually... albeit at the expense of several bystanders)
7. what's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I tend to write pretty gentle, occasionally LIGHTLY bittersweet happy endings (that's the cafecliche guarantee baby) but part of me wants to say 'the only way out' (and probably 'the yunmeng accords' series in general) here. I tend to write fic when I want to play around with the emotions or relationship dynamics that can already be found in canon, so 'the yunmeng accords' is probably as close to a fix-it as I'm going to get.
8. do you get hate on fics?
Not usually! I was part of the Great MDZS Anon Hate Train of 2021, but that was the worst I've ever gotten by several magnitudes - the vast majority of commenters are fabulous.
9. do you write smut?
Not yet! It's not off the table, though.
10. do you write crossovers? what's the craziest one you have written?
I actually don't think I've ever written a crossover! The closest I've ever gotten was when I look over my shoulder, but even that's 'Wangxian in a Conjuring-esque ghosthunters in love situation' and not really a formal Conjuring AU.
11. have you ever had a fic stolen?
I've had plagiarism brought to my attention a couple times, but truly just a handful. I still remember getting a message on FF.net that someone had ripped off a line from my Black Lagoon fic. The SCANDAL of it all.
12. have you ever had a fic translated?
MDZS is the first fandom where I've gotten translation requests, which is always so cool! To my knowledge, I've had fics translated into Russian, Spanish, and Ukranian.
13. have you ever co-written a fic before?
No, but brainstorming fic concepts with my brilliant friends is one of my favorite thing in the world.
14. what's your all time favorite ship?
omg ever? Well Victuuri and Wangxian have been the ones that really lit my brain on fire (if I own the Nendos, it's serious) but let me also throw it back to Fakir and Ahiru in Princess Tutu. That is ROMANCE.
15. what is a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I would have really liked to have one more entry to 'the yunmeng accords!' I had a couple of ideas that I really liked, but nothing that caught fire quite enough to dive into it. That said, I am currently working on something short and Yunmeng Shuangjie-related, at the very least...
16. what are your writing strengths?
Emotional through-lines, pacing, and that sweet, sweet catharsis. I'm drawn to particular fandoms when they leave me with an emotion that I need to break down over the course of several thousand words, and I know that shows through in my writing.
17. what are your writing weaknesses?
Choreography! I'm not a very visual thinker, so sometimes it takes me a while just to figure out how to block the characters in a given scene. I also have a lot of trouble getting into a draft until I figure out the voice, which, when it comes to fanfic, will either come to me extremely easily or not at all.
18. thoughts of writing dialogue in another language in fics?
Yeah, absolutely! (But if you don't speak the language, do your research!)
19. first fandom you wrote for?
[rubs my temples] an X-Men crackfic.
20. favorite fic you have written?
Oh my god. WELL. 'grow' and 'the only way out' I think are the best fics I've written, and 'when I look over my shoulder' and 'the soft animal' are also extremely close to my heart. But 'detente' might be the favorite child. It just gushed out of me.
I think a great many of you have been tagged at this point, so sorry for any double-tags, but: @bluecrystalrainingdaggers @tigerjpg @floofyfluff @vinelark and anyone else who'd like to go for it!

Thanks for the tag @kay-elle-cee! I feel like such an imposter lately since I can't seem to bring myself to write lately, at least outside of journaling.
AO3 Username: Elastic_Heart31
1. How many works do you have on A03? 15, but 2 more are hidden for now.
2. What’s your total Ao3 word count? 765,116
3. What fandoms do you write for? So far just Harry Potter. If I was braver I would write the Before Sunrise idea I have or attempt to write a fleabag fanfic. I'm also experimenting with more original writing.
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Maybe Tomorrow
Iris
It Had To Be You
Found (though currently hidden)
In Between (also hidden 😅)
Those are all Harmony, but my top Jily fic is:
At The Beginning
5. Do you respond to comments? I try my best with my ADHD brain. I truly appreciate when people take the time to let me know their thoughts.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Hmm. Not sure since some haven't ended some of them yet. Maybe Plans? Since we know what happens in canon.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Probably It Had To Be You with it's two part epilogue of fluff.
8. Do you get hate on fics? Sigh. Yes. One of the many reasons I've lost my enthusiasm for writing Harry and Hermione fanfics.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? Yes, though often against my better judgement haha. I have no idea what to classify it as. Maybe I'll borrow Kelsey's word and say vanilla.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? Nope!
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not sure.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Maybe? I've had people ask, but unsure if they are posted.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes, hopefully will get back to it someday!
14. What’s your all time favorite ship? Hmmm I've had so many over the years. The only ones I've attempted to write though have been Harmony and Jily. They've also been consistent since childhood.
Special shout out to my teenage love of Pacey and Joey from Dawson's Creek, even though adult me thinks he deserves better and that show is terrible.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? At this point it feels like all of them 🙈
16. What are your writing strengths? No clue. I've been told I write emotion well. I've also been complimented on my ability to write children realistically.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Probably grammar and sentence structure, I still feel lost a lot of the time when it comes to all of that. I earned to write in English after learning French though it's my native language, and I see how it still impacts me. Also, I tend to be the worst with over writing and then having to edit the hell out everything!
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
If it makes sense in the story. I've seen it work well in a lot of literary books I've read. And one scene in particular from UaS (if you know, you know).
19. First fandom you wrote for? Harry Potter. One and only (so far).
20. Favourite fic you’ve written? Hmm I'm probably proudest of Maybe Tomorrow. It's one that feels personal in ways that are hard to explain. I also think I grew a lot as a writer while working on it.
In terms of Jily, I've really enjoyed my drabbles that aren't on archive. I do hope to expand on some of them someday.

Behold, crossovers! And all with the same show, at that.
Tumblr media
First up is Greg and JF with Sarah and Duck. Two cute, funny little kids and their green pets (though one pet seems a little perplexed). Greg and Sarah would be best friends and nobody can change my mind. (Also, fun rock fact, this was the first OTGW pic I drew!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next two are connected. See, the instant I saw Adelaide, my brain went "evil Scarf Lady". So of course, I had to draw a crossover.
Part One is Adelaide and Scarf Lady just meeting up and looking suspiciously at one another, with strands of wool in their hands.
Part Two is their respective small sarcastic blue characters that have connections to them, Beatrice and Bag. While Bag is just looking confused, Beatrice just goes "Yeah, your Adelaide's way better than mine..."
(Probably my worst Beatrice though, sorry)
Also, "Sarah & Duck" is this one BBC kid show my siblings used to watch. It's a little like OTGW in its oddity and coziness, but less American than British and without the spookiness and drama. It's rather lovely.

can I ask why you stopped working on the ff15/ff7 crossover fic? writer’s block? fell out of love with the source material? should we consider it definitively on permanent hiatus/abandoned? or is it one of those things where someday there might be a renewed spark?
The short answer is, it was a lot of things coming to a head at once.
The long answer is, I was dealing with a lot of major IRL stressors over several years which rapidly sapped all my time and energy, not just for writing but also for things like playing OG FFVII and Remake, replaying FFXV, and participating in fandom. Episode: Ardyn came out during the worst and most stressful part of all that, and for Reasons, it made some of the IRL stuff worse, so I started avoiding most FFXV content. I leaned heavily into FFVII Remake for a bit, but even it could only do so much.
So: a lot of things coming to a head all at once. Between the fandom stuff and the IRL stuff, I very literally stopped being able to write - not just for either Providence or What Stays and What Fades, but at all.
All that said, I'm not ready to abandon either Providence or What Stays and What Fades. "On hiatus" is probably a better status. I'm holding out hope that playing FFVII Rebirth when it comes out will help get my brain back into the FF fandom space. If so, and if I've recovered enough to be able to write again, I want to at least try to work on Providence some more.
I don't want to make promises I'm not sure I'm capable of keeping, though, so the only thing I can actually promise you is that if I do decide to abandon either fic, I'll update their AO3 notes and announce it here.

20 Author Questions
Tagged by @scorpsik - thank you! :)
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
41 :')
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
230,542
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Any Gwendoline Christie character, with a heavy preference for Wednesday and Game of Thrones
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Lipstick Stains
in my head
Visions
Hers and Only Hers
Amortentia: Fated Attraction (i hate that title, i'm changing it)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes! I try to at least. I respond to every comment I get on ao3 because I very much appreciate the time someone took to write something, and I want to give that time back. On tumblr, I try to, but I don't really respond to tags because it's not the best system to reply to tags. But I adore each and every last one endlessly <3
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Everybody Lost Somebody - I cried SO hard writing this.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I feel like most of my fics have a happy ending so... happiest? Hm. I like the ending to in my head quite a lot, also I desire. And I crave.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Thankfully no, which I am eternally grateful for <3
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Yes. Often. Almost exclusively save for the occasional hurt/no comfort that my brain tosses out. Always wlw <3
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
No, I'm not a fan of crossovers - I have one or two that I've enjoyed reading, but I don't think I'd ever bother writing one (who knows).
11. Have you ever had a fiction stolen?
No, save for once when someone reposted a bunch of fics on wattpad? That got taken down though so. :)
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Nope.
13. Have you ever co-writtten a fic before?
Not yet... I do have a fic with @autumn-leaves-chasing-breeze that is chilling in my open tabs though :')
14. What's your all-time favorite ship?
I only really write x reader, and I read a lot of x reader, but I used to (and still do sometimes) read a lot of Swan Queen <3
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I have one Larissa x f!reader fic that I drafted out a long time ago about reader's relationship with Larissa as a fellow student at Nevermore and how it evolves over time into adulthood and working together. But I never have the motivation to write the parts in between the scenes that are stuck in my head :(
16. What are your writing strengths?
I'm my own worst critic and would love to say nothing in a very self-deprecating way, but I will be kind to myself and say I've been told that characterization is one of my strengths and would tend to agree - at least, it's what I work the hardest on.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I'm the slowest writer in existence, I swear it. I also struggle with dialogue sometimes, and transitions. Not sure how much it shows but they're a pain sometimes.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I haven't done it much, and I tend to be cautious and would try to get it double-checked to make sure what I'm writing is correct.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Wednesday (Larissa x reader)
20. Favorite fic you've ever written?
You Make Me Feel - hands down! I loved writing this fic and I have re-read it countless times myself hehe
I also have a soft spot for some of my earlier Brienne fics like Your Favorite Dance because !! Brienne fluff !!

20 Questions for Fic Writers!
I was tagged by @seiya-starsniper! 🤘
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
38 currently, but I orphaned a few in the past and am considering orphaning a couple more of my older ones, we'll see ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
220,579 - holy shit, when did that happen??
3. What fandoms do you write for?
At the moment just Sandman, although I still have some Umbrella Academy wips that I might try to go back and finish before season 4.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
lol I think just due to the nature of them being fics that have been on AO3 for a decade (which... holy shit I'm old 😂) my top five are four Teen Wolf fics and one Voltron fic
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Not really. I'll respond if someone, like, asks me something in a comment. I know I should respond more, but I often get overwhelmed and don't know what to say. So, uh... sorry everyone 😬
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Hm, none of my fics have, like, angsty endings... I think the closest might be Now I Lay Me, just because it's more of a hopeful ending as opposed to explicitly happy (although I'm writing a sequel specifically so I can write the explicitly happy ending, so... that's me in a nutshell lol)
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I would definitely say Smile Like You Mean It. That one is the most fluffy happy ending for sure.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Nah. The worst I ever got was way back in the beginning on some of my Teen Wolf fics I'd get those comments that were like "you should have written it THIS way-" which were annoying but nothing I'd call "hate".
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
lol I wrote actual, explicit smut for the first time a few months ago with Undisclosed Desires. My fic famously will have almost-sex before something tragic happens and gets in the way lol, and even my one smut story is still very hurt/comfort. As much as I appreciate reading smut of all kinds, I think if I ever wrote more it'd be the same h/c vibe. I'm a one trick pony.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Nah, the closest would be in my bandom phase? But I never fully understood if those counted as crossovers or not lol
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
As far as I know I have not
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yup! I can't remember which ones, but I remember approving requests to translate a couple fics.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I did once, and I had a lot of fun with the idea part, but the actual writing a coherent, publishable fic together was stressful. I love just bouncing ideas with people, expanding on topics together, yes and-ing with friends, etc., but I think fully writing a fic with another person isn't really my thing.
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
lol it's hard to say I have an "all time" favorite. I tend to just have my favorite at any given moment. Obviously I'm super into Dreamling right now, but I've had tons of ships that I still love and reread stuff for.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Honestly, there's a bunch of batman wips that I started ages ago and still really like, but I just haven't been able to get into them (Sandman took over the brain real good lol)
16. What are your writing strengths?
I think I'm good at the emotional parts- it's why I like hurt/comfort so much. I will gleefully spend half a story ripping your heart out, but then I'll work hard to give it back. I think I'm good at writing inner thoughts in a way that helps evoke whatever the character is feeling. And I think I'm good at imagery.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Well for one thing I write out of order, so if I ever do multichapter fics I have to finish the whole thing before I can post it lol 😂 Also I think I struggle with action and plot. My writing is very heavy on character introspection, and I like my fics, but if you take a step back from them not a lot really happens in them.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I personally prefer not to, just because I'm monolingual. I'll either just do the italicized words and "they said in x language" or just say "they spoke in x language" and have the pov character not know what they're saying type of stuff.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Heroes. Does anyone remember that show?
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
Oof, I will reluctantly narrow it down to three lol. Now I Lay Me (I love the concept), Sloom (love me some family angst), and Recoil/Release (A Voltron fic that is currently my longest fic, and was another one that I was really proud of the concept and characterizations)
I don't know who's already been tagged, but I'll tag @gabessquishytum @cuubism @softest-punk @magnusbae and @pellaaearien

Flying Close to the Sun - Part One
A/N: another itch scratched as it should be lol
I was thinking about write a crossover with Ocean like this one for a long time, but I was insecure for many reasons, one of them was my judgement that Ekaterina's traits were not 'sharpen' enough. But here we are.
Thank you, @aelyosos for lending me your pirate lad. I really love his concept and you are one of the sweetest mutuals I ever had.
He must be dead. The ringing inside his ears certainly were Pharasma’s bells. Ocean should know better that sooner or later the Lady of the Graves would get tired of his boldness and catch him. After all, every legend had its end, why would his be different?
“To hell those—” He couldn’t end the phrase. The tiefling rubbed his eyes angrily, feeling the ringing echoing inside his brain. If he could get up, he would bury his head on the wall until that stops or he passes out.
He was so thirsty. At least, his body was laid on a soft mattress… But he didn’t recall that place. Pale curtains were closed, but it was still possible to spot sun rays infiltrating through the thin fabric. There was a rambling outside, with wagon wheels crossing the streets and children shouting. Everything was too bad — and loud — when you were drunk like him. Ocean wanted to puke, but his stomach seemed empty.
Perhaps that was the problem: he was also hungry.
Before he could gather forces to turn his body, the room’s door opened. On instinct, Ocean immediately stood up, his tail snapped over the bedside table and knocked out some souvenirs. The floor was moving under his feet, but he held on, ready for anything — or anyone — that was coming through that door.
But for his astonishment, it wasn’t an angry innkeeper or a voluptuous lover. Actually, it was a woman with copper-colored hair, carrying a bowl. Noticing the tiefling looking at her like he just saw a ghost, she muttered, “Good morning. It’s good to see you awake”.
Ocean didn’t know where to look. She wasn’t mad at him, and he was wearing pants and a shirt. Most probably they didn’t have a one night stand. If he could have a glimpse of what happened last night it would make things less confusing, but everything was a blur…
“Hey, take it easy.” She noticed his stiff body. “You are safe here.”
“But what happened?” he finally said.
She glanced at the small plant pot that he broke, and rested the lidded bowl on the bedside. “You were found unconscious in the streets.”
“Oh.”
It was true, he still remembered the innkeeper shouting at him before kicking him out. But that scene was so common that it could be a false memory.
“And you hit your head.” She pointed to her own.
The man moved his hand to touch his forehead and felt a trail of stitches, from the hairline to the temple. He was still intrigued, but slightly relieved. “Aye, it explains a lot why it hurts…”
She muffled a chuckle. “I daresay it is not only because of the hit. You were drunk as a skunk. And now you can’t even stand up.”
Ocean narrowed his eyes. “Who, me? Of course not, lass. I’m fine and in one piece, I just need to catch my thing—”
The stranger only put one hand on his shoulder and gave a little shove. That was enough for Ocean’s legs to fail for good, and he fell down onto the mattress.
“As I said”, she stated flatly, “No, you are not”.
The tiefling opened and shutted his mouth, trying to formulate a statement, but soon he gave up and asked, “Bloody hell, who are you? Are you being paid to keep me captive here?”
“Me? Not at all.” She shrugged, taking a chair on the corner of the room. “The Saranrae’s local priests had the worst plans for you, trust me.”
Hearing about those fanatics made his tail curl nervously. They have been more ruthless lately.
“And you are a priest of…”
“No one. It’s just me and the Green Faith.”
Ocean arched his brows. It was unusual. A beautiful woman with a soft demeanor taking him from Saranrae's mad dogs. He had to give in; whoever she was, she saved him, after all.
The pirate sighed, “Aye, I believe ya… But, what’s your name?”
She sat before him and introduced herself, “Ekaterina. Now hold still, I have to clean those stitches”.
He straightened up on the edge of the bed. Ekaterina opened the bowl and a strong scent of lavender filled the room. She rolled up her sleeves, revealing curious blue tattoos and started her task.
While she was taking care of his forehead, Ocean couldn’t help but think that there was something odd on her. He couldn’t tell if that was one of the hangover side effects, but Ekaterina was… glowing. She was very pale, although had a pinkish alive undertone, but also there was a golden shine coming from her. And despite the cold room, her hands were very warm.
Suddenly, one thing connected to another.
“You are an aasimar.”
She smiled, amused. “You have a good perception for someone tipsy.”
“I’m not tipsy,” he grumbled. “And I just thought out loud, sorry. It didn’t mean to sound rude.”
“No offenses taken.”
Definitely she didn’t give a damn about his suspicions. Actually, she looked very concentrated while taking care of his stitches.
Probably because she knows how to cut somebody open as well. He swallowed hard.
Ocean continued, “But… I thought that every aasimar had metal colored eyes. And yours are like… an icy sea?”
They were not golden or silvery. Her irises were so pale that it was impossible to spot her pupils, if she had any at all. Ekaterina looked amused with his observations, and replied without turning her focus from his wounds, “Well, maybe I’m one of a kind. Not every tiefling has red skin, too, you know?”
That was one of few moments when he was grateful for not blushing easily. Ocean nodded, embarrassed. “Fair.”
They remained silent. He almost couldn’t catch her touching, or the suture being adjusted. Ocean was still feeling sick, but the lavender smell calmed his nerves slowly.
“I didn’t ask yet, but what’s your name?”
She broke the silence, squeezing the handkerchief over the bowl. They were almost done, and he felt his heart getting small.
“Ocean.”
“I suppose that you are not from Mendev either.” She stared at him.
He looked around, like there were more people there. “Who else isn’t?”
“Me.” She shook her head and got up.
The tiefling grimaced. “Seriously? What a lass like you are doing in a town like this?”
Ekaterina giggled. “I ask myself every day. But… it’s better than my homeland.” She peeked through the curtains. “I don’t know how long you are here in Kenabres or if you plan to stay longer, but be careful. Lately things are getting hard for anyone who doesn’t look… decent.”
Ocean scoffed, “Do you mean, people who look like demons?”
“Likewise. They are searching for witches and all sorts of outcasts as well.”
He lowered his eyes and pondered. “And you risked your life for me. Why?”
“I can’t just watch people being kicked and walk away like it was nothing!” She frowned.
Ocean took a deep breath and got up. “I owe you.”
She rolled her eyes. “Don’t worry about it.”
“No, no, I mean it,” he chuckled, raising a finger. “ 'specially when a beautiful lass saves my arse!”
Ekaterina looked at him with curiosity. Afterwards, she shook her head. “It sounds like you are getting back to normal. That’s great.”
Ocean smiled back. Being friends with that aasimar would be interesting.

20 questions for fic writers (and artists)
I was tagged by @dragonflylady77 and, why not? Why not procrastinate a bit? :P
1. How many works do you have on ao3(Tumblr)?
14.
2. What's your total ao3 (Tumblr) word count?
253,035 as of right the fuck now. Holy moly that's a lot.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
I've written for Why R U? and now for Stranger Things.
4.What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Of soulmates and colors (a chonky metalsandwich soulmates AU)
What happens in Vegas... (a WhyRU? canon divergence with Tor waking up in Vegas, married to his ex)
I just came to say... (modern era Harringrove meet cute)
Amok (modern era Harringrove thing about Billy meeting his mom by chance and being conflicted as fuck)
Like a curse (the WhyRU? heist AU nobody had asked for but they still had to face)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I try. Sometimes I'm slow as fuck and sometimes I'm perched on my inbox like a starving hawk, but I always try.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Probably What doesn't kill you makes you a monster, which is an angst fest built around body horror and body mutation which ends with Steve having basically no hope about the future. But then, months after, I went and wrote a follow up fic where Steve gets to find another monster and fall in love with him and have a HEA, so I guess it only half-counts ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
7. What is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Uh... I honestly don't know. I mean, I mostly write fics with a good ending or at worst a hopeful ending (like Come Close) and I honestly don't think I can't rank which of my HEA fics is the happiest, so, all the happy ones? I guess?
8. Do you get hate on any fics (Art)?
So far, never.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Yep, I do, even if it's hard as hell and I always feel like it sucks. As for what kind... uh... I don't know how to answer... The smutty kind? Sometimes it's soft. and sometimes it's hurried, and sometimes it's filthy monsterfucking because monsters, too, deserve to get laid.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
My heist AU is a crossover between one show, a different show, and an AU of the first show. Two actors from the first show play minor parts in the second show. It's a wild, wild thing.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No.
14. What's your all-time favorite ship?
Harringrove.
15. What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Probably that one Gallavich thing I wrote 90k words of because I had to put it out of my head and is close to the end but when I look at it makes me feel eh because Ian's part of the plot feels to passive and NOPE!, that's so fucking wrong, vade retro Satana!
16. What are your writing strengths?
Plotting and dialogue. And wild ideas.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Descriptions. Smut.
18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
To quote Guin, "get it checked by a person who speaks that language before you post". Preferably a native speaker who can tell you if it sounds like your easy going teenager was possessed by the ghost of a stuffy academic from the 1820s. Also, it's a hard balance to make it not too distracting, to make sure it doesn't kill the pace of the story, so good luck in your endeavours, fellow writers!
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Honestly no idea.
20. Favorite fic you've written?
I love them all, they are my self-indulgent nuggets of entertainment and I won't pit them one against the other trying to choose a favorite. I reject this question. U_U
I should tag people, theoretically, but honestly I don't have the brain power for it tonight. If you read this and want to do this, consider yourself tagged. Have fun! :3

20 Writer Questions
Tagged by @mytardisisparked. Aw, thank you ☺️
1. How many works do you have on Ao3?
52!
2. What’s your total Ao3 word count?
546,530. And it ever increases! (to be fair, a full third of that is one fic <.<)
3. What fandoms do you write for?
At tthe moment, the Star Trek: Enterprise brainrot continues to be extremely real. But if you look over my fandoms list, there's a diversity of very niche and obscure properties!
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
Far and away, the four fics that make up my ENT series Built to Last, though not in order lol
What We Build Here
For the Duration
From the Ground Up
The Place We Call Home
And then Lay Down the Beat, which is a Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency joint.
5. Do you respond to comments?
Heck yeah! I am massive ho for comments and love to respond to them.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I have an allergy to angst - I read and write fic because I love the characters and want them to be happy, so about the worst I can manage is bittersweet. So probably What We Build Here, but ONLY because I knew it would have a followup and everything would be okay!
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
All of them! The fic's not over til the happy ending gets here!
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Never on AO3, but I have gotten some rude anons here on tumblr in the past.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Kinda. 😄 I've written some M rated Trip/T'Pol that is inevitably very vanilla and very sweet.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
I don't - I don't think my brain's wired right for crossovers.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not in the manner that this question is asking, but I do consider the AI scrapping stuff to be theft and I'm not cool about it.
Stealing this answer from @mytardisisparked, because yeah
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Nope
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Years ago I worked on a massive Baldur's Gate 2 AU with a friend that was a lot of fun. Never did publish any of it, which is a shame.
In my more modern writing era, no, though I have been the grateful recipient of a lot of ideas and positive feedback from some very wonderful people (most especially my beloved @pajamasecrets, but also @candiedsumire, @deadheaddaisy, @followersarepeopletoo, and a host of others)
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
Every ship i've ever written is my favorite!
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Probably the sequel to In a Strange Land. That one just...*sigh*
16. What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue, definitely. I can sit there and have characters chat endlessly and be happy as can be.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
All the parts around the dialogue 😅
I struggle a lot with plotting. The answer to the question "what happens next?" makes me break out in a cold sweat.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
As it's never really been an issue for me…none, really.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
If someone dug up my old LJ (and I won't tell you where to look), they'd find some extremely middling (and unfinished) Buffy the Vampire Slayer fic.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
That changes depending on the weather, the phase of the moon, or the barometric pressure. I love them all for different reasons. 😁
Tagging anybody who want to play along!

20 Questions for fic writers
@five-and-dimes, @signiorbenedickofpadua, AND @cuubism all tagged me in this, and when three of your favourite writers ask you to do a thing, you do it. SO! Here goes.
How many works do you have on Ao3?
A nice round 25 😊
2. What's your total Ao3 word count?
540, 538. I should update my portfolio.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Sandman, right now. Technically I still write for Doctor Who and maybe Lucifer but frankly it's all I can do to manage one fic right now, so.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
They're mostly Lucifer fics, I'm surprised. I thought AWFA would have passed them by now. The Devil You Know (1955), 100 Ways (1696), What Dreams May Come (1626), White Days (1533) and rounding it out with Doctor Who, Fool Me Once (1474). I'm kinda proud of that last one.
5. Do you respond to comments?
Usually, yes. I try to.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I don't really write angsty endings tbh. Not my jam. Probably a toss up between the ending of The World is Unraveling, because it ends on a cliffhanger, and maybe Out of the Cold, because it ends ambiguously, but nothing I'd characterize as angsty.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I mean, the rest are all definitely happy, enough that I have trouble picking just one. The first one I thought of, though, is To Hell and Back, because it ends with a wedding.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Thankfully not. The worst I get are vague comments about "I wish you hadn't written it like this" which are hurtful, but I ignore.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
The ace kind. In that, I've been told that my smut reads like it was written by an ace person (it was a compliment).
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
I write crossovers very rarely, because I find they tend to stray crackier than I intend. However, I am pretty proud of the Doctor Who/Lucifer crossover I wrote based on the Impossible Planet episode. (Mistaken Identity)
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I don't think so. I've had people write their own version of my fic? Which was flattering, but also made me feel kind of odd.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Not that I'm aware of. That would be really cool.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Not really, no, unless bouncing ideas off a discord counts.
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
I don't have one. I get REALLY into one ship in the moment, and then I move on to the next, which doesn't mean that I love the previous ships any less, or that I love the current ship more, it's just what happens to be bouncing around my brain at any given time.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Can I answer 'all of them'? Truthfully I think Locum Tenens has to take that spot, I started posting it with the notion that getting traction on it would make me want to continue, but the idea of writing what I have planned for it is SUCH a daunting prospect. I never say never but that fic will be a LOT of work.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Character. I'm good at keeping voice consistent, at getting into a character's head and really understanding how and why they would react a certain way. I'm also really good at making connections, at drawing on things from canon to use in a new light.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I am SLOW. I only put something down if it's what I really want to say, and I edit as I go, so my pace usually hovers around the hundreds of words per hour. I also think I'm bad at writing emotional scenes, but in this I compare myself to others, and I know that's a false dichotomy, because obviously my writing isn't going to affect me emotionally the same as someone else's. I just feel like I consistently fall short of the ideal in my head, but I guess that's common to all writers for the most part.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Awkward, generally. As a linguist, I couldn't live with myself if I didn't get everything absolutely perfect, and it's hard for me to justify including whole lines in a different language in a fic written in English. That's not to say I've never done it, but most of the time if I want to use other languages I'll just pepper in a few words here and there.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
I'm going to draw a distinction here. The first fandom I wrote for, where I was on tumblr and engaged in actual fandom stuff, was Doctor Who. My first published fic on Ao3 was for Dragon Age (Skyhold Slept), and my first fic I ever wrote (published nowhere, I was twelve) was for LotR, but I did not, and still don't, consider myself a part of their respective fandoms. Maybe that's a silly distinction, but I consider immersing myself in and engaging with other fans and content an integral part of how I write now, when it hasn't been, historically.
20. Favourite fic you've written?
That's like asking me to choose between my children. I'm going to cop out and say every fic is my favourite while I'm writing it, so it's Another Word For Ache. Sorry I don't have a more interesting answer to round this off.
Aaaaand I feel like a lot of people have been tagged, so how about @themirokai, @delta-pavonis, @thewollfgang, @moorishflower, @eidetictelekinetic and anyone else who wants to play!

So! I've had longfic on the brain, so I decided to do a roundup of all my long Oxventures fic. Under the cut, you can find links and discussion to all my Oxventure stories and series that are over 10k words. There are so much more of them than I expected, but this is the fandom where I really started writing long stories as a default rather than an exception.
the deep (51076 words, Kasimir/Edvard/Zillah, Barnaby/Lilith)
Barnaby has to get married precipitously, and that's how all the trouble starts. I think this is genuinely the best thing I've ever written? I'm my own worst critic, and I'm really pleased with it.
it's just the ride of your life (44690 words, Corazon/Prudence)
After an accident with a Wish spell, Corazon ends up as a cleric of the Yellow King. I'm hugely pleased with this story; it really gets in the weeds with D&D mechanics, and it was very satisfying. Fun fact: Drash and Malachite are characters my buddy and I played in a one-shot.
my name written next to yours (40061 words, Merilwen/Egbert, Corazon/Prudence)
Merilwen makes an error in judgment, and she and Egbert have to get married. I did not mean for this story to be as long as it is, but it's all for Popular Character Ilranos. I maintain Egbert's summoning is one of the best scenes I ever wrote.
The Alien (32446 words, Kasimir/Edvard/Zillah, Kasimir/Edvard, Kasimir/Barnaby)
If the Hobbyhorses had a coin for every time someone was replaced with a younger version of themselves, they'd have three coin. These weren't originally meant to be connected, but it worked better this way. And of course, the most powerful force in all the realms is lesbian breakup drama.
high road (34273 words, Kasimir/Edvard/Zillah, Barnaby/Lilith, Barnaby/OFC)
Kasimir, Edvard, and Zillah fall backwards into a relationship, and then they go into exile. All of my heart is already on the page with this one, so I will say instead that I do think that Marjorie and Claire became best friends, and Marjorie also calls Claire her sister, just to skeeve people out.
component parts (31429 words, Kasimir/Edvard/Zillah)
Dunno what to say about this story, actually. It's the only story I've written where Kasimir is healed, and also the only one with a collaring scene. They aren't related.
the whole world hinges on your swings (21546 words, Purvis/Margot, Purvis/his DiJi girlfriend)
Margot needs stress relief, and Purvis readily volunteers. This was very cathartic to write.
no subtitle (20079 words, Kasimir/Edvard/Zillah, implied Agent 47/Diana Burnwood)
Agent Z gets handled. A crossover with a fandom I know next to nothing about, but I think it went okay.
try (not) to see it my way (18767 words, Corazon/Prudence)
It has been 0 days since Corazon was last cursed. I really love "I could make him worse" sorts of codependent romantic entanglements in my stories. Delicious.
you're only as big as your battles (18083 words, Kasimir/Edvard/Zillah et al)
Kasimir meets Edvard and Zillah at a dungeon. I rarely write modern AU in this fandom, but this was very satisfying to write. I really liked engaging with Kasimir as an old man (even though he's not old).
unembarrassed (16159 words, Kasimir/Edvard/Zillah, Barnaby/Lilith)
Man idk what to tell you, Edvard's got a huge dick and Barnaby slut shames Lilith. I think initially these were meant to be unrelated, but they work thematically, I feel.
what I believe in I'd rather not say (15968 words, Barnaby/Lilith)
Barnaby doesn't join a sex cult that worships a snake god. I had a blast writing this tbh, and I still want to make Lilith's dress.
Hell For Leather (15574 words, Prudence/Dob/Corazon)
The gang has to go undercover at that kind of party. Sometimes you write a story because you want to wallow in all the sumptuous detail. Also I still think the youtuber clothing shop is fucking hysterically funny.
flawed (19511 words, Barnaby/Lilith, Kasimir/Edvard/Zillah)
Lilith is absolutely heartless, until she isn't. I really liked playing around with the expectations of what it takes to be a dom in this one.
Deferred Maintenance (13842 words, Kasimir/Edvard/Zillah)
They come back to Volisport and have to move on with their lives. I will make all of you love Gizmo or die trying.
downtime activities (13587 words, Kasimir/Edvard/Zillah)
Kasimir, Edvard, and Zillah get stranded in a safehouse. I like this one a lot; I think I really captured the paranoia and stuffiness of being trapped inside for months. No idea why I'd be writing about that.
silver bells and shotgun shells (12575 words, Kasimir/Zillah, Kasimir/Edvard/Zillah)
Kasimir and Zillah have a big/little relationship, and Edvard joins in. The extent to which Edvard absolutely commits to the bit is so important, and I never see bigs or littles in fanfic that aren't just daddy and baby girl.
pebbles on water (12297 words, Kasimir/Edvard/Zillah)
Kasimir leaves Volisport for Skovlan, or does he? This one is just so damn sad, and I wished dearly to make everyone sad with me.
Eye Opener (11377 words, Dob/Corazon, Everyone/Everyone)
Corazon invents pornography. I really wanted to engage with Dob as an artist, because I think he has this side to him that isn't quite so over the top. Also yes this is the one the Oxbox account reblogged the art of.
they never, ever seem to fit (11366 words, Brad/Killian)
Everybody lives, and Brad decides that Killian is his boyfriend. There is so much of me in this; I love mindfuck and the trousers of time and I am still extremely angry about how Michael Sam was treated. I may have extended this to 10k just to capture this one.
Hell Raiser (11127 words, Prudence/Dob/Corazon)
Cthulhu demands that Prudence give him an heir, Prudence demands that Corazon give her his genetic material, and Dob gets everybody out of it. My first fic in the fandom! Start as you mean to go on.
they all suppose what they want to suppose (10494 words, Prudence/Corazon)
Corazon has to go to pirate court and tells everyone that the crew are his concubines. I don't think fanfic has enough of competence kink Corazon? Corazon is a peacock, but he's also incredibly good at his job. So, pirate stuff.

...... the worst part about having done the thing I said I wouldn't do (write a fic over 50k because I fucking know how I am and once I have written a 50k fic, I live in that universe. you can't take me out of it. I just live there.) is that this time I didn't even... it's not even *on* ao3. I wrote a server-specific dark version of a fic that is now like 70k and my brain just *lives there*
and only people who are both in the server, and who like dead dove even know it properly exists.
and rn I want to talk about a crossover for a show that has /not/ seen a lot of love on the server.
which means 99% of y'all will not understand/appreciate it when I say
'Snow and Nont would be fantastic friends and I'm so sad that Snow can't befriend those fucking twinks.'

What’s your opinion on people who post in other fandom tags when they’re using the premise of the media as an AU? Like for example, “First Kill but Jori” and they post in both the Victorious fandom tag and the First Kill fandom tag despite it being completely AU and none of the characters from First Kill actually appear. It’s just these two characters from Fandom 1 replacing the characters and reenacting the plot from Fandom 2. Personally I think it’s just a ruse to get more people to click their work, which is pretty shitty. If I’m in the second fandom, why the fuck would I want to see these characters I don’t know, from a fandom I don’t care about, in the space where they don’t belong? That’s like going into a grocery store to sell your homemade cookies. I’m sure they’re great and you put some level of work into it, but there’s a time and a place and this is not the place, my guy.
I’m in a musical fandom and this happens way too often and I’m beyond sick of seeing them. Authors who write BNHA or FNAF or whatever be like “uwu musical au uwu!!! Char 1 is Musical Char G, char 2 is musical char K...” etc. and it’s like. I came here to this musical fandom specifically to read about these musical characters. These characters I don’t care about from these other fandoms may as well be OCs. Get the fuck out. It’s gotten to the point where this fandom may as well not be it’s own thing anymore, it’s just an extension of not even its own movie, but everything else.
And the worst part is I can’t even filter it out. People tag their fics with both the musical AND the movie all the time, and that counts as a crossover and I’d be missing out on the lion’s share of actual content. While also annoying, I don’t mind this as much since it’s within the same franchise, though it’s pretty easy to tell people are writing more for one than the other.
I know AO3 has really spoiled us in terms of tags and filters but I honestly don’t think it’s too much to ask for people to stay in their own lane and not put unrelated fandoms in unless it’s a real actual honest-to-god crossover where there’s some legit level of interaction from all parties tagged (also fuck those multifandom oneshot “BOOKS”. Fuck you wattpad weirdos who are obviously trying to game the system and just cluttering every single tag your little brain can think of and then just abandoning your giant wall of 100 tags and only 1738 words in 3 whole chapters because you’re overwhelmed and now it’s everyone else’s problem to deal with. If you tagged properly in the first place the volunteers who have to see the report would probably have more time on their hands and the wait time to handle these reports would be less. Fuck you for wasting everyone’s time). If you can’t trust people to find your fic, then you probably need to improve your skills and not rely on cheap tricks to get views, just saying. I would love to be able to exclude crossovers and just have it be easy, and not have to go into filters and exclude This fandom, and that fandom, and that one and that one and that one and that one and OH THAT one too, and this other one and that one and... just kill me already Jesus Christ
--
This behavior is anathema.
If you're writing a fusion, use the additional tags, not the fandom field!
I have ranted about this many times, often with regards to His Dark Materials (one of the fandoms hardest hit by this bullshit). Anyone who does this is rude as fuck and deserves to be told off for mistagging.
