The parallels and differences between these intimate moments of two separate parties speak volumes about the relationship (and timing) of Elizabeth/Anne and Darcy/Wentworth. Darcy and Elizabeth hold each other’s gaze for one brief, electrifying moment, while Anne and Wentworth can’t even bear the agony of looking each other in the eye. One holds the promise of a beginning between two strangers, while the other is amidst a sea of torment and repressed longing between estranged lovers.

okay guys how do we feel about modern adaptations of famous books that reference the famous books as existing in-universe?
i've been pondering my own modern au of cyrano de bergerac today, and coincidentally i just watched "modern persuasion" (2020) which BY THE WAY WAS ACTUALLY PRETTY GOOD. but something that surprised me about the movie was that the "references" to the original material (for example, her cat is named wentworth) were actually in-universe references. the characters have read persuasion! the main character named her cat wentworth because she saw the similarities between anne elliot's situation and her own!
i find that fact by itself charming, i think. but it did start to frustrate me when they kind of... began to rely on the original work, instead of committing to being an adaptation? the love interest doesn't write a "half agony, half hope" text, he writes a text that says "i remember that book, with the half-agony, half-hope line. that's about where i am now". and it's an interesting theory of adaptation, for sure, but i think in this particular case... it felt lazy, honestly? it felt like they didn't know how to play the letter straight, so they didn't, ignoring the fact that the letter is THE most pivotal and iconic part of persuasion
(the other part that irks me is the idea that characters are able to see their similarities to existing stories -- because if so, why don't they use that foreknowledge to guide them? but i don't think that's a valid criticism, honestly. for god's sake, i've technically lived the backstory of persuasion, but lord knows if my ex showed up i would Not be making the assumption that we'd go in the same direction as anne elliot and captain wentworth)
i guess, for me, this makes me want to question How Much is Too Much explicit in-universe reference to the source material. can éponine quote cyrano's first line when she's doing her first public confrontation? can she quote the letters from cyrano while she writes her own love letters? is she allowed to recognize the balcony scene -- and maybe even choose to opt out of it, if she doesn't want to get caught in that kind of storyline?
i'm still trying to figure out where that line is. i would love to hear other people's thoughts, if you have them!

Semi spoilery ramble about the Mr Darcy & Miss Tilney Mysteries:
OK right so I read The Murder of Mr Wickham like when it came out last year and I finished The Late Mrs Willoughby yday and!! I still love both oc main characters and have never been more frustrated by an ending as I have been w TLMW bc I was so desperate for them to just!!! Confess their feelings!!!
Also more than anything I kind of love the fact that it's a deconstruction of the Magical Autistic Detective Trope. Literally the last thing I expected these books to be but it's like top 3 reasons why this book is so good.
Esp bc it's set when autism just... wasn't understood to be a thing, it's shown to be hard for Jonathan!! He doesn't have magical powers, he has special interests in mostly obscure stuff! People are mean to him or confused by him or don't understand him and he is just convinced that he's never going to have friends who he can ever really be himself around.
And like there have not been many scenes that made me more visceral uncomfortable that the bit in book 2 when he's at a dinner party and one of his old schoolmates clocks that he has a crush, and intentionally asks him abt his special interest so he'll humiliate himself by going on and on about it without noticing. Like I felt that IN MY BONES I think we all have an experience like that if we don't mask carefully enough.
Sometimes Juliet gives neurodivergent vibes too, she just seems to be more adept at masking so it's less obvious to the reader, herself, and everyone else. Like Jonathan is semi regularly overwhelmed and frequently, sometimes unconsciously stims by rocking, and his parents and everyone around him have just convinced him there's something wrong with him.
Juliet has moments where the mask slips and she's blunt and is totally unaware of the unspoken social dance happening around her and she's like huh society's a fucking weird place wish it made more sense. Ah well. Alas.
I think the author does the Canon Austen characters brilliantly too!! I know some ppl have said that Fanny and Edmund annoyed them in book 1 but honestly (and this may be bc I'm a Mansfield Park girlie) I loved them and I loved the way their story paralleled their book! Fanny is right and Edmund comes to realise that is basically what it's about, and Fanny's strength of character beneath all her difficulties being assertive is basically the best thing about her.
Loved the Knightleys. Hilarious. Thought Emma was going to eat him mid way through the book and not in a good way, so; accurate. Darcy and Lizzie not communicating, her misunderstanding and being annoyed at him, him thinking his stoicism is going to help them through a hard time when actually it's isolated them from each other - nice parallel, like it.
I felt endlessly bad for Wentworth and Anne, hope they come back all better in a future book.
Honestly loved Brandon and Marianne, I felt like they were very true to their book characters.
Anyway my very fervent hope is that next book we get a Lady Susan Cameo, an icon, truly That Bitch. Or maybe they go to Sanditon idk, give me some resolution for that squad.
Got the vibe that maybe Juliet is going to Bath at some point in the near future. So I wonder who she'll meet then. I mean obviously Jonathan bc fate wants them to fall in love and get married and she can teach their kids how to climb trees and he can teach them the piano, but who else!!
Book only just came out and I'm hype for the next one but honestly it ended on a cliffhanger for them!! I want them to be friends again! No juliet he does like you he just can't make eye contact and doesn't like other people touching him!! I want them to meet again and solve idk the fucking stabbing of Sir Walter Elliot or Aunt Norris or Mr Elton!
And also comes their feelings the agony of not knowing kills me lol.
11/10 no notes. Well. Many notes but all of them good!!

📚 June and July Reading Round-Up 📚
Since I didn't post my June Reading Round-Up, here is both June and July together!
I didn't read much in June, but sort of made up for that in July.
In June, I read:
- Intrigues by Mercedes Lackey (enjoyable, good follow-up to the first book, very heart-wrenching in places, interested to see where the plot and the conflicts go from here, liked the characters, Mags my beloved, that ending!)
- Magic's Pawn by Mercedes Lackey (very good, plot not quite what I expected going in, poor Vanyel!, really liked the thematic resonance of the ending, enjoyed how Vanyel's character and emotional growth was handled)
- The Keeper's Six by Kate Elliot (my first Kate Elliot book, good, couldn't really connect emotionally to the themes and the writing style, liked the messages and characters, loved the worldbuilding, was left with questions but a satisfying ending)
In July, I read:
- Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros (so good!!!! Loved the narration, the writing, Violet and her character growth, the relationships with the other characters, the romance, the worldbuilding, enjoyed how the author subverted tropes and wrote them in her own way, that ending!!! Very scared but excited for the next book)
- Poster Girl by Veronica Roth (read it in two consecutive sittings, enjoyed the worldbuilding and the themes, liked the ending, definitely a lot of interesting questions to think through, interesting perspective from the main character)
- Exit Strategy by Martha Wells (quick read, wasn't as immersed in the writing as with the previous books, some very iconic lines, heartfelt as ever, reunion didn't disappoint, emotional ending)
- A Restless Truth by Freya Marske (great and very enjoyable, gripping and compelling, got more emotionally invested as I read, loved the themes and characters and pacing, Maud and Violet my beloveds, loved seeing Alan and Hawthorn)
- Daughter of the Blood by Anne Bishop (re-read, didn't feel as groundbreaking as when I first read it, but I still enjoyed it a lot)
- Heir to the Shadows by Anne Bishop (read it in one sitting, loved the character growth and development, somewhat emotionally exhausting but well-paced)

the biggest crime of Persuasion imo is taking all the restraint out of the romance by having them "talk" and be "friends" while simultaneously making a mockery of anne's despair for the sake of "comedy" to the point that the greatest fictional love letter possibly ever written made me feel nothing! the scene was essentially left untouched iirc. take just that scene out of context and it would've been the height of romance (-minus mr elliot and mrs clay sucking face). They probably knew how iconic it was so of course they were going to do it! Except they ruined everything else that made the letter so satisfying. Dakota went all out with the tears and i felt NOTHING!

Ask game! Share 10 different favorite characters from 10 different pieces of media in no particular order. Then send this to 10 people (anon or not, your choice). Have fun!
i was also tagged by @wolfpants and @moony-saraneth - sorry it's taken me so long yikes. king of procrastination
elliot schafer (in other lands). the most obnoxious know-it-all to ever tread my pages. i would die for him. bisexual icon.
baz pitch (carry on). sweet baby gay. my darling. most patient good boyfriend. only wants love and revenge. give the man what he deserves
anne elliot (persuasion). twenty-something filled with regret and sad girl vibes. clever and kind. heart of gold. deserves the world.
dante quintana (aristotle and dante discover the secrets of the universe). gay as fuck little creative boy who can't control his feelings and needs to say everything that comes into his head? lol couldn't be relatable
gansey (the raven cycle). a hyperfixated nerd with no filter and a complex about loving too much is also definitely not relatable at all
lazlo strange (strange the dreamer). he's genuinely one of the most wonderful characters i've ever read. bookish and odd and so full of love and joy. an absolute treasure.
beth harmon (the queen's gambit). she's just everything, okay? complex and flawed and traumatised and clever and loving and aloof and sexual but not over-sexualised and one of the best characters ever on television. ever.
arthur less (less). one of the most compelling and heartbreaking narrative voices i've ever read. also just a bit of a duffer. bless
neville longbottom (harry potter). boy is my favourite canon character. honestly i don't know how he couldn't be. sweet nature nerd. so brave. always trying so damn hard.
rebecca bunch (crazy ex girlfriend). i have a thing for problematic women with severe mental illness i guess. but also. if you haven't watched this show - or you started watching it and couldn't get into the first few episodes - please, please, give it a go. it'll make sense soon enough i promise. it is a masterpiece. and rebecca is everything i want in a protagonist; deeply flawed with a good heart, complex motivations, and extraordinary character growth.
