Milestone Monday
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On this day, January 29, 1845, The Raven was published in The Evening Mirror marking the first time the poem was published with the name of the author, Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849). At the time of publication, Poe was working as a critic for The Evening Mirror in New York and his poem was met with instant praise and popularity, although not much financial success.
To commemorate the day, we’re sharing The Raven published in 1927 by The Bibliophile Society out of Boston. The Bibliophile Society was founded by Charles E. Hurd in 1901 to study and promote “the arts pertaining to fine bookmaking and illustration” with the intent to publish books of useful literary purpose outside of the element of rareness. The Society’s treasurer and founding member, Henry H. Harper (1871-1953), wrote an extensive introduction and commentary for The Raven bestowing his ideals on the importance of preserving exceptional literature upon its membership readers.
The book was printed anopisthographically on parchment paper and bound in full calfskin with gold border lines. Title page engravings by Sidney L. Smith and Arthur N. Macdonald greet readers while dry point etchings by Haydon Jones (d.1954) bookend the text. Tissue guards printed with red text mirror each etching. Special Collections copy of The Raven was a gift from our friend Jerry Buff and bears the bookplate of Charles J. Hardy.

✨ Requests are open✨
Hi everyone! I'm a new writer on Tumblr, but I wanted to let you guys know that I am taking requests for one-shots, headcanons, etc. Below are details on what characters & ships I'll write, what I will and won't write, request guidelines and stuff like that. Please read this before you request, and if you see one of my posts before this and want to make rest, I'll be linking this post to each of the other posts I make, but anyway, let's get to it.
Characters I'll write for (at the moment, I'll update this when I become more comfortable writing about other fandoms):
Harry Potter, Golden Era Characters:
Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley Ginny Weasley, Percy Weasley, Charlie Weasley, Billy Weasley, Fred and George Weasley, Lavender Brown, Cho Chang, Luna Lovegood, Dean Thomas, Seamus Finnigan, Neville Longbottom, Susan Bones, Ernie Macmillan, Hannah Abbott, Padma Patil and Parvati Patil, Terry Boot, Colin Creevy, basically any other characters that I might have forgotten to list or minor characters.
Harry Potter, Maurders Era Characters:
young Remus lupin, young James potter, young Sirius black, young regulus black, young lily Evans, young Severus snape, young mary Macdonald, young Dorcas meadows, young Marlene Mckinnon, young pandora Lovegood, young Narissa Malfoy, young Bellatrix Lestrange, young Andromeda tonks, young molly Weasley, young Arthur Weasley, Fabien and Gideon Prewett, young Alice Longbottom, young Frank Longbottom, Fleamont Potter, Euphemia Potter, pretty much all of the Black family, and any other characters I might have again, forgotten.
Now, onto request guidelines:
I will write oneshots, headcanons (general or based on a specific prompt, like a character's hobby or relationship with another character) fluff, and angst. I can write some level of smut, but only something like making out, kissing, etc. Please don't be afraid to ask, but please don't be upset if I turn down the request, it's usually only because I'm not comfortable with writing it. I also won't write anything about rape, abuse, incest, anything that's racist, anything smutty that involves a minor and an adult, etc.
2. There are certain ships I will not write about as well, I won't list specific ones, but I will not write about ships that involve an adult and a minor, a student and a professor, polyamorous ships, etc. I get that everyone has their preferences, and that's fine, but I'm not comfortable writing those types of ships. Any other ships, though, are totally fine! I will also write platonic ships, not just romantic ships.
3. Be kind. if you don't like the request I've written, please be polite. Although I am by no means transphobic, racist, etc, I do not have much experience in writing characters that are part of the LGBTQIA+ community or characters with different cultures, and this may reflect on my writing. But, with that matter and just in general, I try my best, so I will not accept any hate on this blog, towards me or others.
4. Be patient. Please take this as a friendly remember that, like the rest of us, I do have a life, and while I'll try to get back to you on a request as soon as possible, I can not write 24/7. So please don't be offended if it takes a while for me to finish your request, I will try to finish it as quick as possible. And, please don't be offended if I choose not to write your request. There are a lot of things I really don't feel comfortable writing about, and that's okay. It's not my intention to offend you if I don't write your request, it's just my preference. And, sometimes it has nothing to do with the content of your request, but simply because I don't have the energy to write sometimes, and I just have to turn down some requests.
5. Please be detailed. This is very important! Please specify in your request, what character you want me to write about, the ship you want me to include if you just want it to be a character x y/n thing, or a nonshipping request, a clear summary of your idea, the type of writing you want it to be (headcanons, one shot, fluffy, angst etc), that type of thing. It doesn't have to be super long, just enough so I know what you actually want me to write. And please only submit your requests via my asks, not in the comments of my posts or anything like that.
And I think that's all! I really appreciate you taking the time to read this, and just an extra note, if you would like to submit anything via my asks, that's not a request, just a question or to share your own thoughts on Harry Potter, please feel free to do so! I would love to hear from you guys. Anyways, thank you again, and I look forward to you submitting any requests you might have!

“Is Tobogganing Noisy? City Solicitor Asked To Submit A Report,” Toronto Star. January 16, 1912. Page 1. ---- A Hundred Citizens Were in Delegation Which Waited Upon the Board of Control To-Day, and They Became So Noisy That Major Geary Had to Ask Them to Calm Down ---- VARIOUS VIEWS EXPRESSED, SOME EXCUSED CLERGYMEN OF INTOLERANCE ---- Rev. Wm. Rochester: “The city has provided work for the police where there was no necessity of it, and this may touch the Lord’s Day Act. This is absolutely a question of public policy.’
‘King George sets a good example by refusing to travel on Sunday.
‘The city in conducting three slides, enters into competition with three of the greatest educational influences, the churches, the Sunday schools, and the homes.’
Rev. A. L. Geggie: ‘I suppose you call preaching a noisy game.’ (laughter) ‘and that’s why it is not allowed in the parks.’
Mayor Geary: ‘If you can have the Legislature include tobogganing with baseball and skittles, as noisy games to be prohibited on Sundays, you have solved the situation.’
Rev. Dr. Speer: ‘It is a bad ad for Toronto when you build slides for use on Sunday.’
‘You might as well run a picture show, free of charge, in the park on Sunday.’
Rev. Canon Bryan: ‘Parents are alarmed because their children are going to the slides wen they are supposed to be at the Sunday schools.’
Rev. Mr. Braithwaite: ‘I think you will admit that the ministers represent a large section of the better sentiment of Toronto.’
J. W. Livingston - “you ministers should have been born 200 years ago.’
Mr. J. M. Macdonald: ‘Moral degradation must follow the secularization of the Lord’s Day.
J. A. Paterson, K.C. - ‘This is a noisy game, and the city should do everything possible to stop it.’
J. G. O’Donoghue - ‘There are many workers who want to slide on Sunday, but we would forgeo Sunday, but we would forego Sunday mornings in order to let te people who want to, go to church.’
J. Enoch Thompson - ‘These people got a law passed against Sunday fishing, and a Methodist preacher was the first  to get pinched for it.’
‘These men should resign as preachers and join the police force.’
D’Arcy Hinds - ‘Talk about clericalism in France - we have it worse in Toronto.’
‘You talk about building slides - the Lord made slides in Riverdale, and why can’t we praise God while we slide on them?’
Mayor Geary - ‘Calm yourself.’
Edward Meek, barrister - ‘It is not illegal to slide on Sunday, and the Council cannot stop it.’
‘You are making a pretence of strength you haven’t got, and you can’t beat down or bulldoze this Council to do your will.’
Mayor Geary - ‘That is unncessary, Mr. Meek. No suggestion of that was made.’
Mr. Meek - ‘Personal liberty is far greater than Sabbath observance.’
A Voice - ‘We couldn’t regulate the time of our birth.’
Lined up in battle array on each side of the Board of Control table, rival deputations disputed for almost two hours on the question of Sunday tobogganing this morning, and the frenzied battle was waged so fiercely that the Mayor had difficulty in keeping order. Several times he rebuked the auditors for laughter and applause.
At least a hundred citizens crowded into the room, about evenly divided in numbers on the rival sides. At times the war of words waxed warm, and once D’Arcy Hinds got so excited that the Mayor quietly suggested - ‘Calm Yourself.’
Those Who Were There On the Lord’s Day Alliance deputation were Rev. W. M. Rochester, Rev. Dr. Speer, Rev. Dr. R. N. Burns, Rev. Dr. Hazlewood, Ald. Wanless, Rev. A. L. Geggie, J. K. Macdonald, J. N. Beattie, J. A. Paterson, K.C. Rev, Dr. Braithwaite, Ald. Hilton, E. S. Casinell, Arthur Howe, Evelyn Macrae, Rev. Canon Byran.
On the other side were ranged representatives of the National Sunday League, including J. Enoch Thompson, Edward Meek, D’Arcy Hinds, J. G. O’Donoghue, Louis Gurofsky, and Aubrey Bond.
The final outcome was that the matter was referred to the city solicitor for a report as to the city’s legal standing.

ARTHUR: It's Only Rock 'N' Roll
ARTHUR: It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll
First off, special shout out to tumblr user fishhookred1995 who messaged me on arthur-recaps.tumblr.com to ask if I had recapped this episode yet, which prompted to go back into my archives and rediscover it. I’m not going to lie to you guys: that 10th anniversary was not as great as I remembered it. The plot was contrived, the themes were hokey, and yeah, D.W. got some good zingers in but she…

Of Convenience
Chapter 3- Tension
Warnings: Cursing, arguing,
`
`
`
This was the infamous Mary MacDonald? You shook her hand, “I’m Y/n.”
“Oh… You’re… Remus’s girlfriend,” She looked a little taken aback.
“Yeah, I am,” You looked at the boy beside you to see his cheeks flushed as he looked anywhere but you.
“It’s a… Pleasure to meet you.”
“Likewise.”
The tension was thick. And it was awkward.  “I invited her,” You looked over to Marlene smirking at you.
“Oh…” You knew what she was playing at. “That was nice.”
She hummed in response. Apparently it was too awkward for James because he suddenly started laughing. Everyone looked at him and he stopped.
Remus cleared his throat, “So-”
“Have you guys been dating long?” Mary asked you.
“Two months… Gonna be three on the third of January.”
“Ah…” She took a sip from the mug, “Do you see it lasting?” Sirius started choking.
“Excuse me?”
“That was rude, I’m sorry.”
“Yeah, it was,” You felt Remus tap your hand, you looked at him and he mouthed ‘relax’. You looked incredulous. You scoffed and got up from your seat, “I’ll be back.”
“Where are you going?” Lily asked.
“To get a drink.”
“What can I get ya?” The girl behind the bar asked.
“Can I get a butterbeer?”
She sucked her teeth, “I’m gonna have to see some ID.”
“Can I get water then?”
“Comin’ right up,” She turned her back to you as she got a glass. You watched from the corner of your eye as someone sat down next to you.
“You okay?”
Lily. “Yeah, I’m good.”
“You comin’ back to the table?”
“Yeah,” You sighed. “I’ll be right there,” She placed a hand on your shoulder before leaving. The bartender placed the water in front of you and you thanked her. Two minutes later, the seat next to you was once again occupied, “Lily, I’m coming now.”
“Who’s Lily?”
You looked at the man who took the seat, “Oh, I’m sorry, I thought you were a friend of mine,” Unbeknownst to you, a pair of eyes watched you from the table you previously sat at.
“It’s all good,” He smirked. “I like that jacket on you, you look good.”
“Thanks, it’s my boyfriends,” You got up and turned to head back to the table. His hand grabbed your arm, pulling you back.
“C’mon, stay a little longer. We were just talking.”
“I’m sorry, but I’m not interested,” You swallowed, suddenly feeling hot. “Please let go.”
“Sit down, and we’ll talk.”
You tried yanking your arm back but his grip was strong. “I believe she said to let her go, mate,” You looked up relief to find the eyes of
“James,” You let out a breath.
“What are you her boyfriend?”
James straightened his back, towering over the man who held your arm. “You wanna test your luck?” The man reluctantly let go of your arm and stalked away.
“Thank you,” James swung his arm over your shoulder, tucking you into him.
“No need to thank me, love,” You looked at the table to see Mary in your seat talking to Remus. You had to remind yourself that you were in this ‘relationship’ to get them together. You swallowed your pride and stepped away from James’s embrace.
“Here,” You said, shrugging off Remus’s jacket. “Give this to Remus, will you?”
James looked confused, “Why not give it to him yourself?”
“I just remembered I have, erm,” You thought of an excuse. “Potions homework due tomorrow,” He reluctantly took the jacket.
“Y/n,” He called.
“Yeah?”
“Tomorrow’s Sunday.”
“...Goodnight James,” You feigned a smile. “Tell everyone I’m terribly sorry for leaving early.”
“Wait-”
You left the Three Broomsticks with a heavy heart. When you reached the castle, you heard someone call your name.
“Rem?-”
“Y/n!!”
Tumblr media
“Oh!” You rushed over to help the fallen James. “Are you alright?”
He pushed up his glasses, “Peachy,” You extended your hand and he took it. “Thank you,” You pulled him up.
“Why aren’t you with-”
“I see how you look at Mooney.”
“And how is it I look at him?”
“Like you like him.”
You looked at him, “Well, he is my boyfriend…”
“No, he’s not.”
Your heart pounded against your chest. “What are you talking about?”
“Mooney isn’t your boyfriend.”
“Yes he i-”
“Stop, now you’re just lying to yourself… Come, follow me…”’
Tumblr media
James took you to the astronomy tower, there was a chill in the air when you reached the top. He sat down on the second to last step and you did the same.
“He told us…”
“When?”
“Maybe, two days ago?” You purse your lips, nodding.
“He makes me look like a fool.”
“Not on purpose,” You gave him a look. “Sorry… Listen… Mooney? He’s a good guy. But, he can be the most oblivious bloke there is.”
You rested your head in your hand, “If you’re implying that I fancy Remus, you’re wrong… I’m just helping a friend with a favor.”
James didn’t respond. Instead, he tapped his shoulder, you took the hint and rested your head against him. You don’t know how long the two of you held that position, but eventually your eyes began to drift shut. The sound of someone walking up the stairs behind you got you to sit up. You don’t know what you expected, but Remus holding Mary’s hand while they giggled like school girls was not one of them.
“Mooney you idiot…”
“What the hell?” You stood up.
“Yeah, what the hell?” Remus looked between you and James.
Tumblr media
“Yikes, your girlfriend is sleeping with your best friend?” Mary glared at you.
You and Remus looked at the girl, simultaneously yelling “Stay out of this!”
“What are you doing here?” You raised your voice.
“What am I doing here? What are you doing here?” He raised his voice in response.
“Apparently sleeping with your best friend,” You laughed out of spite.
“Don’t fuck around with me right now, Y/n,” He pointed at James. “Have you been seeing him behind my back?”
“Listen to what you’re saying right now, Rem.”
“Answer the question!”
“NO! Of course not! The fact that you even think I did-”
What? Did I hurt your feelings?”
You sucked in a breath, swallowing a sob. You refused to let him see you cry, “Fuck you.”
“Mate, you need to calm down,” James suggested.
“Oh, you’re one to talk, mate.”
“He didn’t do anything, Remus!”
“Oh, you would defend him,” He narrowed his eyes. He spoke in such a condescending tone you almost felt guilty though you did nothing. He made you feel inferior.
“And that means what, exactly?... What does that mean, Remus?? You’re right, I would defend someone that quite literally has nothing to do with this… You still haven’t answered my question-”
“Which is what?”
“Why are you up here?”
He grabbed Mary’s hand, “What does it look like?”
“I-”
“Why are you getting your feelings hurt??? We’re not actually together-” His hand flew to his mouth as Mary gasped.
“You guys were faking it?” Mary looked at you and laughed, “And you caught feelings??”
“I did not,” You defended yourself. “I got my feelings hurt because you,” You looked at Remus. “Are acting like a complete douche, and you think that by being an asshole makes you look so tough.”
“It makes me look so tough,” He turned away from you.
Tumblr media
“Yeah. But it doesn’t, because you just end up looking like a dick.”
He turned back to you, “You done?... I have a guest.”
You scoffed, tears welling up in your eyes, “You disgust me,” You pushed your way through Remus and Mary. James followed you as you ran down the winding stairs. He called out your name, “Leave me alone, James!”
He decided to leave you be. You ran until your legs burned. You couldn’t go to your dorm, Marlene would just torment you. You thought and thought of somewhere you could go, and then it hit you… Molly Prewett. She might be with her boyfriend, Arthur Weasley, but she was the only one who could help you right now.
Tumblr media
You knocked on the Gryffindor's dorm door.
“One second!... Arthur stop... Comin’!” Molly opened the door with a smile, that is until she saw you. “Y/n? Dear, what happened?” She grabbed your bare arms, pulling you into the room. “You’re freezing!” She sat you down on what you assumed was her bed. “Arthur, go get some tea.”
“But-” Molly turned to him and gave him a stern look, “Yes, dear…” The both of you watched him leave, and it wasn’t until he fully closed the door did she turn back to you.
“What happened?” She wrapped a blanket around you before getting on her knees and holding your hands in her warm ones. Just thinking about it, you teared up and your blood boiled.
“Remus...Remus Lupin happened,” And so you explained everything to her. From the moment you met in the beginning of the year, to Alaric, to Lupin’s proposition. You didn’t want to cry when you spoke about what happened in the astronomy tower, but you did. She sat beside you on the bed, soothing you as you got everything off of your chest. “I think I liked him. But after tonight?” You sniffled, “I don’t know what to think.”
“You don’t have to think… Not tonight. Sleep here, okay?” You nodded, your body suddenly feeling weak. “I’ll tell you what you need to hear in the morning…”
“Thank you, Molly,” You laid back and she covered you. You closed your eyes, the last thing you heard was Arthur coming in with the tea.
“Aw, I went down there for nothing.”

British Weird (Handheld Classics), edited by James Machin, Handheld Press, 2020. info: handheldpress.co.uk.
Following the success of Handheld Press's 2019 best-selling anthology Womens Weird, British Weird is a new anthology of classic Weird short fiction by British writers, first published between the 1890s and the 1930s. Embracing the famous and the undeservedly obscure, this collection — curated by James Machin, author of Palgrave Gothic’s Weird Fiction in Britain, 1880-1939 — assembles stories to thrill, entertain, and chill. Featured stories include: ‘Man-Size in Marble’ by Edith Nesbit (1893); ‘No-Man’s Land’, John Buchan (1900); ‘The Willows’, by Algernon Blackwood; ‘The Man Who Went Too Far’, by E.F. Benson (1912); ‘N’ by Arthur Machen (1934); ‘Mappa Mundi’ by Mary Butts (1937). The collection also includes Mary Butts’ influential essay ‘Ghosties and Ghoulies’ (1933), on British supernatural writing. Machin'’ introduction describes the background for these excellent stories in the Weird tradition, and identifies their use of peculiarly British preoccupations in supernatural short fiction.
Introduction – James Machin Man-Size in Marble – Edith Nesbit (1893) No-Man’s Land – John Buchan (1900) The Willows – Algernon Blackwood (1907) Caterpillars – E.F. Books, March - April 2020
Desire Lines - Elizabeth Kingston
The New Me - Halle Butler
Track of the Cat - Nevada Barr
Kingdom of Summer - Gillian Bradshaw
Anne of Avonlea - L. M. Montgomery
A Northern Light - Jennifer Donnelly
Tales from Earthsea - Ursula K. Le Guin
Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm: A New English Version - Philip Pullman
The Mercies - Kiran Millwood Hargrave
Plain Secrets: An Outsider Among the Amish - Joe MacKall
Finn Family Moomintroll - Tove Jansson
The Other Wind - Ursula K. Le Guin *
Secret Water - Arthur Ransome
The Heaven Tree - Edith Pargeter
The Harrowing of Gwynedd - Katherine Kurtz [do you ever worry that there are authors who enjoy writing about executions just a little too much?]
Whitehall - Liz Duffy Adams et al.
We Ride Upon Sticks - Quan Barry
King Javan’s Year - Katherine Kurtz [q: why do I keep reading these? why does everyone talk like they work for Deloitte? and here’s the thing: so Rome and Jerusalem both exist, although no one ever goes there, as do Islam and Judaism (and Latin, Arabic, and Gaelic), there are adjectives like “Celtic” and “Moorish,” there’s clearly something playing the role of Mediterranean trade routes and given that it exists - presuming Rome and Jerusalem are where we left them - I see no reason not to assume it’s the Mediterranean, but we also have fantasy not-quite-Catholicism in our fantasy British Isle-y peninsula (subcontinent?), butted up right next to the fantasy Persian Gulf, which is next door to fantasy France, which shares a border with evil fantasy Byzantium (except when it’s evil fantasy Russia), which has some fantasy Eastern Orthodoxy going on and besides all my serious concerns about the geography I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO THE POPE.]
Wanted, a Gentleman - KJ Charles
The Desire for Dearborne - V.B. Kildaire
Inventing Victoria - Tonya Bolden
She Rises - Lucy Worsley * [I liked this quite a bit - below-decks Age of Sail plus a classic maid & mistress narrative, and in many ways what I’d hoped for from Confessions of the Fox - but I also need to warn for a lot of sexual violence and one section with the n-word over and over and over]
The Bastard Prince - Katherine Kurtz [a: it’s because they flip the Canon Error; Apply Fanfic? switch really decisively, even though I don’t]
Jackdaw - KJ Charles [I nearly quit on this during the first sex scene, but I’m glad I didn’t: magic! pining! the fresh sea air! learning to live with your formerly(?)-felonious flying ex(?)-boyfriend! all in all, a delight]
Being the Change: Live Well and Spark a Climate Revolution - Peter Kalmus [when you give a Buddhist a vegetable oil-powered car...]
Magic for Liars - Sarah Gailey
Lilli de Jong - Janet Benton
Bookburners: Season One - Max Gladstone et al.
If You Lived Here You’d Be Home By Now - Christopher Ingraham
Rag and Bone - KJ Charles
Weather - Jenny Offill
A Corruptible Crown - Gillian Bradshaw
Invitation to the Dance - Tamara Allen
Land of Mist and Snow - Debra Doyle and James MacDonald [I’m not going to claim this is good, and the part where a Mayan priest with no personality besides evil is sacrificing people for the Confederacy is definitely dicey, but I will tell you that it features a 19th-century abolitionist vestal virgin stripping down on the quarterdeck to commune with the spirit of a battleship and first of all, what???, and second, I was 100% there for it]
Frankissstein - Jeanette Winterson
Mourning Raga - Ellis Peters
The Apple-Tree Throne - Premee Mohamed
The Weight of Ink - Rachel Kadish
The Downstairs Girl - Stacey Lee
We Wish You Luck - Caroline Zancan * [Some awkwardly MFA-marked passages I’d like to edit, but I finished this on a Friday night and reread it on the Saturday]
Wicked Plants: The Weed that Killed Lincoln’s Mother and Other Botanical Atrocities - Amy Stewart
Romancing the Inventor - Gail Carriger
Spin the Dawn - Elizabeth Lim
The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue - Mackenzi Lee
Walden & On the Duty of Civil Disobedience - Henry David Thoreau
A Face Like Glass - Frances Hardinge *

Words taken from various Canadian multicultural children’s picture books (a Goodreads’s list of such books can be found here):
luminescent (adj.) emitting light not caused by heat.
tree (v.) force to take refuge in a tree.
Mennonite (n.) a member of a Protestant denomination originating in Friesland in the 16th century, emphasizing adult baptism and rejecting the taking of oaths, military service, and the holding of public office.
xylography (n.) the art of making woodcuts or wood engravings, especially by a relatively primitive technique.
insulin (n.) biochem. a polypeptide hormone produced in the pancreas by the islets of Langerhans, which regulates the amount of glucose in the blood, and lack of which causes diabetes.

Group of Seven and Tom Thomson a group of Canadian landscape painters, officially established in 1920, who formed the first major national movement in Canadian art. The founding members were Franklin Carmichael, Lawren Harris, A. Y. Jackson, Franz Johnston, Arthur Lismer, J. E. H. MacDonald, and F. H. Varley. A. J. Casson, Edwin Holgate, and L. L. Fitzgerald joined subsequently. Their work exhibited a bold and colorful expressionistic style, depicting especially, but not exclusively, Canadian landscapes.
