WIP Wednesday

It’s WIP Wednesday, time for a little accountability, sharing your work, and getting a kick in the pants.

Post a snippet from one of them. Snippet must be words you wrote in the last 7 days. We’re posting progress here. If you haven’t made any, go make some and come back to play!

The party that Flash has dragged her out to is some going away party for an old High School friend of his. There are too many people packed into a tiny apartment and her cup is never empty, too many people willing to share their merriment and keep her topped up, pulling her into conversations that she didn't fully understand and making her feel a lot drunker than she actually was with all her confusion and attempts to catch stray strands of information.

Whoever Ned Leeds was, he was so completely loved. MJ would almost feel jealous if she weren't reaping the benefits of his party.

😈 Is there anything you enjoy doing that you think your readers hate?

Perhaps the amount of internal monologuing? I love internal monologuing but that leads to not a lot of action or descriptions.

Maybe not a 'hate' thing but definitely an annoyance for readers is once I finish writing something I am just way too excited to share to the point that I do not thoroughly proofread so my fics are riddled with stray commas, grammatical errors, and the wrong forms of words(their instead of there or similar)

Back when I was working on Fly on the Wall (Invader Zim fanfic from years and years ago-that is a fanfiction.net link FYI) my impatience at posting also led to me posting incredibly short updates, which YES someone legit called me out on. Like the only comment I remember from that fic.

🧠 What’s an idea you have that you can’t quite call a WIP yet?

My first instinct was to say Bound but I have indeed actually begun worldbuilding and plot outlining that one so it is no longer just an idea.

I did come up with a few ideas for a sequel to Hemorrhage. But I kind of personally like a lot of the ambiguity surrounding that fic. Not to mention the 3(4?) other WIPs I need to try and focus on first.

because sometimes there are invisible tests and invisible rules and you're just supposed to ... know the rule. someone you thought of as a friend asks you for book recommendations, so you give her a list of like 30 books, each with a brief blurb and why you like it. later, you find out she screenshotted the list and send it out to a group chat with the note: what an absolute freak can you believe this. you saw the responses: emojis where people are rolling over laughing. too much and obsessive and actually kind of creepy in the comments. you thought you'd been doing the right thing. she'd asked, right? an invisible rule: this is what happens when you get too excited.

you aren't supposed to laugh at your own jokes, so you don't, but then you're too serious. you're not supposed to be too loud, but then people say you're too quiet. you aren't supposed to get passionate about things, but then you're shy, boring. you aren't supposed to talk too much, but then people are mad when you're not good at replying.

you fold yourself into a prettier paper crane. since you never know what is "selfish" and what is "charity," you give yourself over, fully. you'd rather be empty and over-generous - you'd rather eat your own boundaries than have even one person believe that you're mean. since you don't know what the thing is that will make them hate you, you simply scrub yourself clean of any form of roughness. if you are perfect and smiling and funny, they can love you. if you are always there for them and never admit what's happening and never mention your past and never make them uncomfortable - you can make up for it. you can earn it.

don't fuck up. they're all testing you, always. they're tolerating you. whatever secret club happened, over a summer somewhere - during some activity you didn't get to attend - everyone else just... figured it out. like they got some kind of award or examination that allowed them to know how-to-be-normal. how to fit. and for the rest of your life, you've been playing catch-up. you've been trying to prove that - haha! you get it! that the joke they're telling, the people they are, the manual they got- yeah, you've totally read it.

if you can just divide yourself in two - the lovable one, and the one that is you - you can do this. you can walk the line. they can laugh and accept you. if you are always-balanced, never burdensome, a delight to have in class, champagne and glittering and never gawky or florescent or god-forbid cringe: you can get away with it.

you stare at your therapist, whom you can make jokes with, and who laughs at your jokes, because you are so fucking good at people-pleasing. you smile at her, and she asks you how you're doing, and you automatically say i'm good, thanks, how are you? while the answer swims somewhere in your little lizard brain:

how long have you been doing this now? mastering the art of your body and mind like you're piloting a puppet. has it worked? what do you mean that all you feel is... just exhausted. pick yourself up, the tightrope has no net. after all, you're cheating, somehow, but nobody seems to know you actually flunked the test. it's working!

still one of my favorite bits i ever got to commit was pretending not to know who jesus is when a street preacher was evangelizing to me. he was like "do you know who jesus is?" and i had so much time before my next bus and i wanted to know what would happen so i said no. and you know what. he had clearly never been told no to that question before because if i hadn't actually known who jesus was, his baffled and fumbling attempt sure wouldn't have told me. literally reversed the roles. now you get to stand here feeling very uncomfortable and wishing you could be somewhere else because guess what buddy, this is my bus stop, im early (and can catch like five other buses from this exact stop), and im now thoroughly invested in hearing about this mysterious jesus figure. you're locked in here with me. im eating the key as we speak. i will kill us both before i let you out of here.

2. Is there a trope you’ve yet to try your hand at, but really want to?

Oh god there are just so many tropes out there it's hard to keep track.

Probably some of the more extreme whump tropes?

Maybe a mistaken identity fic.

4. How many fic ideas are you nurturing right now? Care to share one of them?

Right now, I've got the 3 WIP's (So I Whisper Now in Your Ear, While You're in the World, and Slices of Summer) because I'm silly and haven't actually written out their outlines yet

I've also got Bound, A potential Bent Spoon prequel fic of when Willie and Flynn were interning for Caleb. Briefly toyed around with a Moulin Rouge AU with Reggie and Carrie. I also toyed around with a band break up fic one day while listening to Kelly Clarkson's My Life Would Suck Without You, that one would hinge on lack of communication and Reggie pining....I am probably not going to actively pursue those last two.

I also have a non JATP fic idea I randomly shouted at @jatp-spinsb which would be A Sanders Sides vampire fic

Fic ideas don't come to me as easily as they used to so I don't have that many right now.

33. How do you feel about crack?

(Had to look that one up XD ) Crack sounds awesome and I am sure I have read my fair share of it even if I didn't realize it. The first author that comes to mind is thessalonike (starblessed) who has written some AWESOME stuff, had me legit cackling in public one day.

Not sure if I'd ever be any good at writing it.

38. Talk about a review that made your day.

OMG, they've all made my day. Which definitely sounds like I am waffling but it's so TRUE!! Whenever I doubt if I should even share my work I'll pull up those comments and tags.

I will say that @daintyduck99 has a knack for pointing out the details that I either almost cut or didn't even include in the first place. Which just always makes me go wow.
