becoming an Atenean
[Poetry]
I’ll abandon the Thoroughfare where I was raised for the Lavender Haze the source of the angels’ undeserved, unending praises for their God.
The bygone brown for blue to celebrate and black to grieve the old self.
The grotesque, scandalous prose I once wrote for those who listened condemned for the needs of those above
I’ll ditch my doctrines for an essay or two and fight alongside the white men who stole space from a friend who needed it.
I’ll dye my hair grey and miss the ironies I and those around me have created for ourselves.
I’ll miss myself knowing I’ll grow as a person for good, according to their standards, that in a few years my Mother would look at me in the eyes and say, where are you?
***
From whoever I’ll become, Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam!

El Ateneo Grand Splendid has been on my bucket list for quite some time. I read in a balcony and had coffee on stage. Truly one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world.

Laws that Maketh Man: A Political Scientists’ Use of IHLs in the Peace-Process Effort | Blog 1 of 6
Our political landscape has come a long way in the last 200 years. Due to rapid globalization, politics have changed to cater to a country, its neighbors, and the rest of the world. World policies, i.e., UDHR and IHLs, create limitations and benefits for all of humanity, which drastically changed policy-making across the globe. But amid these political advancements arise new problems that require a thorough analysis of its dynamic. A particular discipline, Political Science, spearheads the fray in investigating the effect of rampant globalization in politics. With that said, This blog will delve into the importance of political scientists in learning IHLs and how it would affect the peace process and implementation of policies. We will also delve into the potential challenges a political scientist may encounter in implementing procedures that deal with the three themes.
The Role of Politics, IHLs, and the Peace Process
In a Nutshell, Political Science delves into the use and transfer of power in politics. Majors of this discipline use political theories and recorded phenomena to understand how states interact and co-exist. States occasionally clash and wage war against one another, drastically affecting their constituents and their daily lives. This is apparent in major wars like WWI and WWII, where major atrocities of man were committed. Because of this, International Humanitarian Laws (IHL), also known as Laws of War and Armed Conflict, were created to mitigate the effects and safeguard parties caught between hostilities. IHLs are especially important for Political Science majors because they get to learn the ethical, legal, and human dimensions of armed conflicts.
Another major theme in modern politics is Peace studies. This study provides a basis for resolving, managing, and preventing peace-related conflicts. The study of peace equips political scientists with the tools to foster cooperation, mediate disputes, and address policies that address the root causes of conflicts. This knowledge is invaluable in the aims to contribute positively to tensions between states. Exploring the areas of peace and IHL offers difficulties. The complex nature of both issues poses a major obstacle. It is necessary to be thoroughly aware of each dispute's cultural, historical, and socioeconomic aspects. Similarly, it can be difficult to navigate IHL because it is a complex network of treaties, conventions, and customary laws.
So why should Political Scientists study and implement world policies like the IHLs in their research? First, state conflicts have effects that go beyond national boundaries in a connected globe. Understanding IHL gives aspiring diplomats and policymakers the tools to promote moral behavior during disputes, such as highlighting the significance of human rights even during unrest. In addition, IHLs could be useful to Political Science majors due to rapid reforms in recent policies. PolSci majors can interact with these shifts and help develop more inclusive and long-lasting global frameworks. Lastly, Political Scientists could use innate knowledge to understand and work across tensions between states. IHL and peace studies are integrated to foster critical thinking, empathy, and conflict resolution.
In a world where the consequences of political decisions resonate across continents, a PolSci major's education cannot be confined to theories of governance and power already set in stone. International Humanitarian Law and peace studies must be included for a complete grasp of global dynamics. IHL and peace studies knowledge will enable PolSci majors to influence a more just and peaceful society as future leaders, diplomats, and activists.

68-2238 - Commencement
68-2238 – Commencement
Today I attended my wife’s graduation ceremony – though apparently they call it a “commencement exercise” here. I gather that’s an American thing and it’s called that because when graduation is over, what’s when adult life begins. In my wife’s case I think its more about beginning a new phase in life? En Todo Amar Y Servir
In July 2011, I delivered this reflection as a second-year high school student at the Ateneo de Manila High School. This was heard all over the school’s public address system during the morning reflection period. I was given this chance to share with the community during the celebration of the Ignatian month.

[Poetry]
