I see most reviews online about Simplicity Pattern 8568 talking about the shark onesie-- totally warranted as it is ADORABLE-- but I wanted to make the changing mat as a baby shower present and feel like sharing the (mostly) finished project for others frustrated by not seeing other customer pictures online!

I say mostly finished because I have not decided if I want to leave it as is or add some of the bias tape to the outside to use as a tie for the closed version. I might have messed up a little on the inner pocket but it wasn't anything big enough I could not fix with a little more hand sewing. I hand sewed a lot more than expected, actually, because I went in and tacked down the bias tape on the inner side so everything will be nice and flat for the future child being changed.

As for this particular instance, I made it with a joke-y Camp theme in mind as the parents to be are Horror fans. :)

(I'm a little tempted to make one for myself, I don't have kids, but to use for MTG decks and the such lol)

Flutterheart Bear

I have a little tradition. Every time somebody close to me has a new baby, I give them a Mommy and Baby Care Bear pair -- a Kenner 13″ and 6″ that best suits their personality, IMO.

My cousin, however, is the first to have a new baby after I began my Care Bear customizing hobby. My cousin’s a real sweetheart -- she’s always been a bright, bubbly, loving person, and she stepped up and helped with my wedding when my would-be-Matron of Honour buggered off on me a month beforehand. This is the perfect opportunity to thank her for her kindness.

Meet Flutterheart Bear, Mommy and Baby!

I chose a butterfly as a little in-joke. My cousin, like me, has the initials “JB” and initials a lot of stuff in her job as a nurse. One of her collogues asked her once why she keeps signing her forms with butterflies, since JB looks like a butterfly when written in cursive. She thought that was adorable!

I made the butterfly rainbow colours to represent how full of joy and love for everyone my cousin is, and how I know she’ll pass those values onto her baby <3

The embroidery was very complex this time around. I used satin stitch almost entirely, at a 4 strand thickness to give it a finer look. Normal embroidery thread is 6 strands thick, which doubles to 12 when you fold it in half (like I usually do while sewing). I separated out the strands until I had only two, folded in half to four. This makes for a finer, almost machine-like technique, but takes a long time to do. I used this technique on the wings outlines, the body, and all the fill. The rays from the “sun” and the antennae are running stitch.

Then I had to do the whole thing over again for the second butterfly for the baby bear!

It took me nearly 2 weeks! However, I think the results speak for themselves.

Needless to say, if anyone ever commissions this kind of bear, I’m charging extra :P

I really hope my cousin loves their new care bear, and I hope her baby will too!
