🖤~ Finally branching out with my digital art, now with an edit of one of my favorite Disney characters; Bagheera! I wanted to give him a bit more color and generally added some details. Wanted him to resemble the bluish-purple hues of real life panthers. With some grey hairs and a beard to show his age and wisdom. Had a lot of fun with this one!!!

RWBY Ghira's Allusion

Ghira Belladonna is the father of Blake and the former high leader of the faunus rights group, the White Fang. He is an important part of the faunus storyline, so I did some research on his character and factors surrounding him to find out why his allusion serves in the narrative of RWBY the way it does, and what I discovered is that what he represents far exceeds his fairy tale counterpart. Let me explain.

Ghira's base allusion is Bagheera, the black panther from the Jungle Book. In the story, Bagheera takes in the man cub Mowgli and becomes his mentor & protector. He can be interpreted as a father-figure for Mowgli, similar to how Ghira, the black panther faunus, is the father of Blake, the black cat faunus (& Kali, based on Raksha the Mother Wolf, is her mom).

Ghira's design also takes some cues, with his panther claws being the most evident. He bears boots with fuzzy claw designs, akin to paws. He also wears a giant furry coat with a panther-face shaped shoulder plate. When fighting, he occasionally goes on all fours like a panther.

Now, usually this is where Ghira's analysis would end, but I did more research and found some very interesting information that could be factors to Ghira's character. So we know that the faunus storyline is supposed to represent the history of racism & oppression in the real world. One well known part of the fight for equality was the reign of the Black Panthers. The Black Panthers were a political organization founded in 1966 to challenge police brutality against the African American community. It was a revolutionary group that ultimately changed the fundamentals of race in civil rights. This group could very much parallel the ideals of the original White Fang Organization in RWBY, which was started by Ghira, a black panther.

The Black Panther Party influenced the creation of the first black mainstream superhero, Black Panther. Which brings me to my next point; Ghira's semblance. it has yet to be revealed to how Ghira's semblance works, but I believe I have a theory.

So we have seen Ghira's aura twice, being hit by a fireball (Volume 5) and then a bullet (Adam Character Short). The effect of his aura activating was different from the usual aura breaking or cracking, meaning whatever he did was a part of his semblance. After these instances, he is shown to not have taken any major damage. So this might mean that it could be a body shield power right? Well, sort of. As seen in the Belladonna home invasion, he doesn't take damage from the fireball, but gets stabbed by Fennec. And although he wasn't wounded by the bullet, he still felt the pain.

Going back to the superhero, I believe Ghira's semblance works similar to T'Challa's Black Panther suit. He can absorb kinetic energy casted onto him, but instead if storing and redistributing it, he just negates it altogether (opposite to Adam). The energy that is released from the suit is purple, which is Ghira's aura color.

So in conclusion, Ghira Belladonna represents the ideal of racial equality, which takes the form of the black panther.

🐆 Similarly to what I did last night, today I looked through another blog post on Andreas Deja’s animation blog in which he showcased some of Milt Kahl’s rough animation drawings of Bagheera in “The Jungle Book”. They are of the scene early on in the movie where Bagheera orders Mowgli to climb a tree to sleep in for the night: “Go on, up you go.” I even looked some other Milt Kahl drawings of Bagheera which showed how the animator observed how actor Sebastian Cabot read his lines as Bagheera during recording sessions for “Jungle Book”. Another one of Bagheera’s main animators was Ollie Johnston, whose scenes included the panther’s discovery of Mowgli, taking him to the wolves den, his nighttime discussion with Baloo, and his heart eulogy thinking that Baloo was killed by Shere Khan. Yesterday was the 56th anniversary of Disney’s “The Jungle Book”. #Disney100

I've been wondering, which Big Cat every doctor (both from the classic and new) is? I'm genuinely curious.

This is an amazing question. Thank you!

1 - Manul/Pallas cats are what I default to - crabby & fierce & not very big

2 - Scottish Wildcat, entirely because of Jamie

3 - lion. Social, regal, also actually fairly goofy if you watch them for an extended period of time

4 - tiger. Big, dramatic, colorful. Very loud

5 - cheetah. Blond, neurotic, very athletic

6 - smilodon. Huge & dramatic & absurd (also my favorite, as he was the first cat I wrote)

7 - I'm honestly not sure on his case? I'm tempted to go for cheetah as well, just because of the virus

8 - black panther ala Bagheera, if only because it matches the literature vibe he gives

9 - snow leopard. Elusive, from the North (I didn't say these weren't shallow), prickly with a soft center

10 - one of those small cats that looks like a housecat (e.g., black footed cat) but actually one of the biggest predators of their ecosystem

11 - caracal. Something long & leggy

12 - I'm not sure on him either, to be honest. Maybe a leopard of some kind

13 - either a serval or a gold footed cat

14 - house cat what went feral

15 - don't know enough about him yet, but inclined towards something flashy like a jaguar

Good day everyone!

As I promised, here is an uncovering of my OC's personality. Please, meet Sara Branton (pronounce: she/her)!

She is a character for my "Transformers: Prime" AU. Sara ia a middle-aged woman, a widow (her first husband died during the war they both took part in) and a retired field medic who works as a surgeon in Jasper. She is a half-German; her mother Gretchen married an American and moved to New-York many years ago, although the old lady still owns a great house in Europe. Sara has an adult daughter Alexa - they are very close, although the girl wasn't able to live with her mother during the childhood because of Sara's first job and post-war recovering period (Sara's PTSD is still too deep; often nightmares don't let her sleep). Friends and ex-comrades sometimes call the woman Bagheera (like a panther from Kipling's "Jungle book") - it was her code-name on the buttle field; she doesn't mind that. Sara is very good at medicine, chemistry and mechanics. Moreover, she is an eager learner who is always ready to study something new.

As for my AU, one night Sara was driving home after an exhausting surgery in a neighbour town when she got into a car crush - unconscious and bleeding, she was found by Bumblebee and delivered to the Autobot base where Ratchet took good care of her. Two doctors who had a lot in common got attached to each other sincerely and made strong friendship which later grew into love. Of course, Sara met other Team Prime's members as well; as soon as she recovered, the woman started helping new alien friends in their war, combining her rich experience with knowledges she could get, digging into unusual nature of strange metal creatures she was bound to co-work with. Although, she had never chosen a side; after everything Sara had seen in her life and everything she had discovered about the new battle she participated in, the woman only wanted peace and, while fighting with bots against 'cons, she did her best to fix the conflict. At last, she managed to return Starscream (he became her confidant) and Megatron on a bright side what ment the dissolution of his army - unfortunately, it led Sara to the end of her existence...

Ratchet was in pain; he didn't want to believe it was over for his human "wife". In order to that, he created a new metal body for Sara and succeeded to translate her personality in the electronic mind. The woman turned into a transformer; nevertheless she had never forgotten where she belonged and continued introducing herself as a human.

How I said, the character doesn't belong to any fraction - she is just a diplomat who tries to bring harmony to this world.

In no particular order (and pls remember english is not my first language):

-microwaves, fridges, and dental hygiene are part of the reason so many people need to have their wisdom teeth pulled out nowadays! Some 200 years ago, going all the way back, food would often get hard or chewy or otherwise tough and teeth would erode over time on it so having another set of teeth come in later in life was useful. Now people eat processed foods and dont have multiple teeth rot and fall out so there's just no room in the mouth for the wisdom teeth anymore.

-mexico's full name is united mexican states, so technically a mexican can say they're american, north american, or from the united states and be right even if they've never stepped foot outside their country (mexico)

-the way xrays work (simplified) is by passing through something and burning (blackening) the film, which means soft tissues and other things that dont show up on xrays are called radio lucid, and they make the black part of an xray, while things like bones or metal block the xrays from burning the film, so the white and bright parts of an xray are radio opaque, which sounds a bit counter intuitive without context.

-turns out pepto bismol is sometimes used during a surgery to slow down bleeding so the bleed can be located and then sewn shut. A gauze soaked in pepto used to wipe down the area stops the bleeding for a moment and allows surgeons to fix it, but it's a very diy and 'old remedy' kind of thing

-the animal 'black panther' doesnt technically exist, in the sense that there is no one animal called black panther. 'Panthera' is the animal genus where lions, tigers, jaguars leopards, and snow leopards are classified, so technically those five are all panthers (and incidentally are the only 5 felines capable of roaring), so a black panther, in the american continent, is a hyper melanistic (black) jaguar (the only one of the list native to america), and elswhere in the world, a black panther is typically a hyper melanistic leopard. Meaning bagheera from jungle book is a leopard. A 'black panther' can be born of regular jaguars or leopards, and can have cubs that are regular jaguars or leopards.

RWBY KALI’S ALLUSION(S)

So after previous research I concluded that everyone from the Menagerie arc was from the Jungle Book. Ghira is Bagheera the Black Panther, Kali is Raksha the Mother Wolf, Sienna Khan is Shere Khan the Tiger King, the Albain Twins represent Tabaqui, Shere Khan’s “right hand”, and Ilia represents Mowgli himself (links to both Ilia & Ghira allusion meta below).

Kali was said to be the Mother Wolf because of her motherly love towards Blake. Some have also made the claim that she is actually a wolf Faunus, noting that her ears are structured differently than feline ears. If this was the case, then she is definitely the Mother Wolf.

ALSO--

Kali's name comes directly from the Goddess of Anger, War, Destruction, etc., in Hindu beliefs. She is commonly referred to as the Divine Mother, Mother Goddess, or Raksha Kali. She is claimed to be the mother of all things in the Universe. Going back to Kali from RWBY, some traits can definitely be seen in her. She is relaxed, yet can stir up a fight when provoked. She is also, say it with me y'all, the mother of Blake.

It seems awkward that the Jungle Book and some South Asian religious figure would be linked together, until you remember that the actual story for the Jungle Book was set in India. Her Eastern design and references are in tune with both her Mother Wolf allusion and her Hindu Goddess allusion (both allusions involve a Indian mother named Raksha). Ilia's name also plays into this, with her last name "Amitola" meaning rainbow based in a Native American language.

So basically both of Kali's allusions just water down to "Mom", which, if you ask me, fits very in tune with her character.

🐾 Whenever I draw Bagheera from “The Jungle Book”, I usually have him end up with a different color scheme akin to that of a lion, a leopard, or a cheetah, though he is actually a panther, a black panther. This is due to me being short on black colored pencils. Regardless, most of my studies on Bagheera are largely based on rough animation drawings by Milt Kahl and Ollie Johnston who animated most of his key personality scenes. Kahl animated the scene of Bagheera and Mowgli struggling up a tree. Johnston animated the nighttime argument between Baloo and Bagheera about how to get Mowgli to the man village. Eric Larson animated the argument between Mowgli and Bagheera after their encounter with the elephants. Even Bill Peet’s initial story sketches serve as inspiration for what I do with Bagheera as well. 🐆

Ramshackle Trio!

The official trio of the dorm! Yes I added a third member! Her nickname is Dre or Drel, is the same height as Malleus and is a strong young lady who will always be mistaken for a guy XD this works in her favor since she lied to get into NRC. So far Berry is the only one who knows. She sees Berry as her big brother since she, like him, has no family to return to.

Drelicia is based on both Bagheera and Sabor (big cats from The Jungle Book and Tarzan) thus she is a black panther/ melanistic jaguar. Her personality is very much based on Tigress so earning her respect and trust is definitely a challenge- Berry however is an exception because he fascinates her to no end (specifically his demeanor and his disability). She loves spicy food and dancing as well as kick boxing and martial arts.

Bonus: that poncho she's wearing is a gift from Berry. It was originally his and he gave it to her as a sign of respect for who she is and that being a girl makes her no less than he is. She treasures it deeply
