My heart breaks for Eddie so much, you can see how much he’s trying to be okay, to do the right thing, how he doesn’t want to hurt anyone but he’s also so confused and hurt and alone and scared and in pain and the negative speed force is twisting his love into something negative and evil

This man just woke up from a fake life and basically only found out he died and his life isn’t his own and everyone and everything is coming at him at 200x speed and he’s just desperately trying to hold on

It took all of Eddie’s self-control not to touch his left jacket pocket as he and Iris stepped onto the walkway at the waterfront park. His hand kept twitching towards it, trying to check that the small square box was still where he’d put it. Iris hugged his right arm, and a light breeze wafted her jasmine perfume up to his nose. Despite that, he felt like throwing up. That, or he was about to have a heart attack. He’d faced down dangerous criminals, gang members, and even a few metahumans, but all of that paled in comparison to the terror that seized him tonight. “That restaurant was so worth the week and a half it took to get a new reservation,” Iris was saying. “Barry and Len needed us last time, but…” “It was an emergency.” Eddie smiled down at her again. “It’s okay.” “Still, I haven’t been home enough lately.” Iris tucked a lock of hair behind her ear. “I’m trying to persuade Eric to take Linda off the sports beat so she and I can share features work more.” “I know what it’s like, having a demanding boss.” Eddie squeezed her hand, pulling her closer to the riverside, to a spot where the lights from Keystone twinkled the brightest across the water. “With Joe away until Saturday, Captain Singh’s been harder on me than usual.” “So, Dad didn’t tell you why he took a few personal days off either.” Iris pursed her lips. “He’s been struggling with something he won’t talk about, so I hope this trip helps. Even though he wouldn’t tell me where he went.” “He’s a tough guy. He’ll be fine.” Truth be told, Eddie was glad that Joe had gone out of town. (And that he’d taken Len’s advice not to tell his girlfriend’s father what he was planning.) He was anxious enough as it was without dreading walking into the station in the morning. He took a deep breath, steeling himself when they got to the edge of the railing. There were a few other people walking in the park, but they were far enough away for the illusion of privacy. He’d been wanting to do this for several months, and now—now he couldn’t afford to get cold feet. “I don’t want to talk about Joe—or Barry and Len—anymore,” he said softly, stopping by one of the streetlamps. “I want tonight to be about you. (okay that’s not entirely true, i met him thru young justice first but he was just wally’s nice uncle to me at the time. i had no idea what was coming)

cw flash started my love for him, that was like THE show for me at the time. it was before i had a tumblr tho so i doubt there’s any traces, but i did have my fair share of doodling him in the margins of my notebooks at school

i stopped around s2 or 3 i think? but i remember being rly rly enamored -> then rly rly devastated by eddie. i shipped barry and cisco too, wasn’t too big on fandom back then so idk if that was a popular one, but it was my top barry ship at the time (ig i always had a thing for shipping barry with his bestie huh!). and caitlin and leonard were always so fun, i think i might’ve shipped barry with them too. i definitely also shipped him with eddie, sorry i was putting that man thru so much LMAO

i also rly enjoyed harrison wells, i remember making a whole animal au to assign each character and i remember none of them except that each of the “versions” of himself were different types of labradors? not sure what the inspiration behind that was but i’m still assigning animals to superhero characters to this day so not much has changed

my memory is honestly pretty foggy, i must’ve been a freshman when i got into that show, but i remember how fun it was to watch it with my sibling. we were having a major superhero “phase” at that time too, so lots of yja, cw supergirl, daredevil, x-men, etc. we were BUSY. but among those (barring yja), the flash stood out to me the most bc of how much speedsters resonated with me. i would fantasize abt having superspeed to the point i might’ve actually been convinced that i might get them some day 😔👊 the fact that barry was such a silly little guy definitely helped

fast forward 7-ish years later and i’m tuning into flashpoint paradox with fond memories distant enough to be nostalgic but not recent enough to reignite anything. and then i’m hit with a frame of barry waking up to the apocalypse and i knew it was so over for me.

i think the fact that i liked cw flash’s barry sm back then primed me to liking him now, but this version of barry, the barry that’s more comics-adjacent, felt so different that i hold them as 2 completely dif characters and phases in my memory. and i think for that reason, i probably won’t ever rewatch cw flash. i want to keep a good memory a good memory, and i can appreciate what the show had to offer as an adaptation, but i think they knew they were doing their own thing too

I first got a bit annoyed about it in the show and this is…. Extremely nitpicky. But I feel like Barry and Iris would either both change their name to West-Allen because they’re dorks and in love, or they would both keep their last name as is for professional/career reasons. Particularly Iris who’s a journalist and whose name is you know… very much attached to her work.

The kids though, would all be West-Allen. Like hahah look… we made these together. I think they would be delighted if Bart’s last name was ‘West-Allen.’

Note: The pronouns for Y/n change from she/her to he/him after he comes out.

Y/dn = your deadname. P/p = preferred pronouns (Can be substituted for any pronouns but Y/n will be only referred to with he/him pronouns by the end of the fic.)

“What are you doing?” Barry walked into their shared bedroom and tilted his head as Y/n stood in front of the mirror.

She flinched and turned around to look at Barry. Her head lifted slowly and there were tears starting to form in her eyes.

“Oh. Sweetie...” Barry walked up to her slowly and placed his hands on Y/n’s hips.

Y/n stood still for a moment, the feeling of Barry’s hands on her grounding her for a moment. Enough to get out a few words.

“I... I hate this body..” Y/n mumbled as tears started to slip down her cheeks.

Barry tilted his head and smiled sadly. “Why?” He thought the world of his girlfriend and he knew that Y/n was truly beautiful, no matter what she thought she looked like. He rubbed up and down the sides of her torso comfortingly. “You’re so beautiful, Y/dn.”

Y/n seemed to tense at that, her body going rigid as she tried to pull away.

“It’s- no, that’s.. not right..”

“What isn’t, baby? Come on, I’ll listen. I promise.” The way he kept looking at her with so much love hurt Y/n.

Barry pulled her over to sit on their bed, “Look at me, babe. Tell me what you’re feeling.”

Y/n took in a deep breath and tried but choked and shook her head.

“Okay then. How can I help?” Y/n stayed silent, knowing that there wouldn’t be a way for Barry to comfort her without outing.. himself.

“Do you want me to tell you how I feel about you?” Y/n glanced up at him and shrugged slightly.

“I think you are the most beautiful, gorgeous girl I have ever met.” Y/n’s legs started shaking as she stared down at her hands intensely, shaking her head.

“Yes, you are, Y/dn. Your body is amazing, you’re just so perfect..” He reached for her hands and held them delicately.

Y/n pulled her hands away and shook her head again, finally speaking up, “Stop, I- don’t..”

“Why? Please, sweetie. Just talk, that’s all I want.” Barry could feel his own hands shaking in anxiousness but he clenched them into fists and kept as calm as possible. “You don’t have to tell me about.. everything if you don’t want, but you gotta tell me what you’re feeling. Please?”

Y/n was starting to get frustrated, not at Barry but at herself. He deserved better than this broken mess of a person. He deserved better than someone that he could never truly love if they were themself. Y/n didn’t even have the courage to tell him he wasn’t normal.

Well, if they broke up over this, might as well be now.

“I don’t wanna be beautiful or gorgeous or.. or like.. pretty. Not the way you think,” she said bitterly. Barry opened his mouth to ask questions but shut it as he saw her starting to speak again.

“I wanna be.. handsome and pretty and.. and attractive the way that..” Y/n took a deep breath and forced it out, “I wanna be the way that boys are.”

Barry raised his eyebrows and then frowned, having an idea of what she.. he? What.. they mean.

“Sweetie, uh... I- I love you, okay? Could you tell me more of what you mean? Please?” A small sigh escaped Y/n as.. as they stopped tensing so much. That small “I love you” was enough to reassure Y/n to continue.

“I’m not a girl.. I’m transgender. I’m… a boy.”

Time seemed to freeze and he felt.. just so awful. Of course it was a mistake. He was the mistake. Barry just had the worst luck with girls, didn’t he? Y/n was just.. wrong. Barry didn’t deserve to have to deal with him and his baggage.

Y/n had already mentally prepared to leave. Then he felt hands holding his and finally looked up to see Barry barely smiling with tears in his eyes.

“You’re a boy?” Barry asked.

Y/n hesitated to say anything, but Barry beat him to it.

“Look.. I still love you, baby. I love you. Boy, girl, anything else, whatever. I love you. You have.. the biggest, strongest heart I know. Whatever you say, it can’t change how I feel about you. Do you get that?”

No, he most certainly did not get that.

Y/n frowned for a moment, his head dizzy from this insane turnaround of events. Barry smiled even wider and cupped his face gently, and giggling. It made Y/n’s heart melt and slowy, he smiled.

“You still like me?” Y/n muttered, hesitantly leaning into the touch of Barry’s hands on his cheeks.

The other man just laughed and pressed a kiss to Y/n’s forehead before whispering in his ear.

“I have a boyfriend now…”

Y/n gave out a short laugh as Barry stared into his eyes intensely. He was.. not at all used to feeling this frighteningly affirmed.

“You like boys..” It came out as more of a statement than a question but Barry smiled and nodded anyway.

“Mm.” Y/n raised an eyebrow at his vague answer as Barry grinned and continued, “I guess so. I never thought too much about it,” he chuckled then nudged Y/n gently. “But I do like one boy in particular.”

Y/n could feel his smile widening at his amazing, adorably stupid boyfriend. “You are such a dork.”

He shrugged and nodded his head, “Yeah. But you still love me.. and I still love you.”

Another flash of warmth went through Y/n’s heart, “That’s pretty cool, isn’t it?” They both giggled. Yes, they were both dorks, but who cares?

They were also in love and it was cool!

Barry whispered as he pressed another kiss to the tip of his nose, “Mhm. Very cool.”

They were silent for another beat, just sitting together and holding one another. After a while, Barry pulled away and looked Y/n in the eyes. His eyes were still looking at him lovingly but he definitely looked like he wanted to ask Y/n something serious.

“So.. should I still call you Y/dn? And well, I haven’t had time to research much on.. on being gay or trans or anything, not since Iris came out as bi but.. pronouns? What can I call you?”

He looked to Y/n timidly and it made him laugh, kissing him then flopping back to lie on the bed with Barry following. Y/n curled up as Barry put his body around him protectively.

“Y/n.. and p/p,” Y/n said.

Barry smiled and laughed, “That’s a good name.”

“Thanks, picked it out myself,” he said without hesitating.

Name-changing humour, always hilarious. Yes, it was extremely dumb but it made Barry laugh.

“Did you now?”

“Yeah, I did.”

They looked at each other and laughed. All of the fear and self-hatred Y/n had felt before seemed ridiculous now. Barry loved him, full-stop. Barry would always look at him with all the love in his massive heart. He would always love Y/n for his heart, not for his identity. And of course he would do the same for Barry, when the exact same applied to Barry being the Flash.

Looks like a lot of people had secret identities, huh?

Barry interrupted Y/n’s thoughts as he reached for Y/n’s cheek and pressed another soft kiss to his forehead.

“Beautiful boy.”

Y/n felt tingles go down his spine and he tried to hold back his smile. “Don’t you dare make me cry again, Barr.”

That made Barry smile again like the stupid little miscreant he was. “Mm. But, what if.. you’re just my beautiful, pretty, handsome boy? I mean, you’re just my amazingly wonderful boyfriend, aren’t you?”

“I hate you.” Barry felt a tear slide down Y/n’s smiling face and he wiped it away while laughing.

Another comfortable pause of silence occurred and yet again, Barry broke it.

“Listen to me. I will be here for you no matter what. Whatever you need, I promise. I guess you could say I’ll…”

“Don’t say it, don’t say it..”

“… be there in a flash?”

Y/n groaned as he rolled his eyes and smiled again. “I really do hate you.”

Barry tilted his head up smugly against the pillows. “You love me.”

"I really don’t.”

Y/n took another deep breath and snuggled into Barry’s chest even more.

“I'm really sorry for not telling you sooner."

Barry frowned, "You didn't have to. It’s not like I’m entitled to know everything about you. I mean, come on. You should know I’m big on secrets.” He smirked at Y/n cheekily and sighed again.

“I should be sorry. I am sorry. I’m sorry if I made you scared to tell me, and for.. calling you that stuff earlier. Misgendering and the naming and whatnot. I promise, you are a man and no one gets to tell you who you are except for you."

Y/n avoided eye-contact and shrugged again, trying to hide how much Barry’s words meant to him. “Alright..”

Barry raised his eyebrows, “For real?”

Y/n sighed, “Thank you, Barry.. I love you.”

Barry smiled and tucked his head into Y/n's chest.

opinion? love it. barry being a nerd for ollie and his many vigilante codenames before he even knew the guy? barry finding out that asshole playboy famously saved from a shipwreck after a supposed 5 years on some fuckin island oliver queen is his hero? such a broken pedestal/death of a hero moment. and then this fucking dweeb oliver met once going into a coma? felicity and oliver quietly worrying about him? delicious. and then said dweeb gets superpowers and becomes a superhero right after waking up from the coma. what the fuck.

10. Most disliked arc? Why?

Without a doubt the Doomworld arc. That’s *not* Len, he would never kill Mick, he couldn’t even let the Legends do it when he thought Mick would go back and kill Lisa over and over in Season 1 so there is zero chance he would kill him over nothing like Season 2 tried to pretend he would. He would also never say that Central City is better without the Flash. This isn’t even about shipping but Len was bored out of his mind before the Flash came around and he loves a challenge, he literally thrives on it, why would he suddenly be content to just sit on his ass and go on pretend heists with no stakes? Len has a lot of flaws and he *is* a violent killer but he’s not the guy who kills his closest friend without a thought or enjoys easy heists with zero risks. He’s just not, and it sucks that the writers had to pretend he was because they needed Mick to pick the Legends in the end. If you can’t do that without making him this OOC then don’t write it at all.

11. Is there an unpopular character you like that the fandom doesn’t? Why?

Already answered here, but I’ll pick a second one and say Ava Sharpe. I know there’s a lot of people out there who dislike Ava but she’s easily one of my favorite characters on Legends. Oh, and Mona! She was great and you can’t convince me otherwise. (Also, I like Ramona Young and I hope that Netflix money was good because her role in Never Have I Ever was basically just comic relief and she’s extremely talented and deserves way better.)

I guess I’ll pick Barry since you didn’t specify :D I guess my unpopular opinion about Barry is that I really hate when people write him as a bit of a doormat. I don’t mind the whole Cinnamon Roll Barry Allen but I do find it a bit reductive most of the time because Barry does have a temper, he can be petty and defensive, he needs everyone to be on his side at all times and he’s especially *not* like that with Len so it’s weird to me that it’s such a thing in Coldflash fics in particular.

Gonna go the less expected route here: Julian Albert, Kamilla Hwang, and Joe West for the fictional character bingo.

Ooh I appreciate the variety!

Julian Albert:

He just kind of Exists to me 🤷‍♀️ I also didn’t like Caitlin/Julian (hence “canon’s not real if I don’t look at it”). I found him kinda off-putting tbh. The show’s no stranger to jerk characters (Harry, Ralph), but Julian doesn’t really have the charisma to endear him to me like Harry and (to a lesser extent) Ralph do.

Also, he was only really there a) for Caitlin’s plotline (and his inclusion in all of it fell flat for me) and b) for the Alchemy red herring (which, as with Savitar pre-reveal, was a waste of time imo)

Kamilla Hwang:

So admittedly I used to be a lot more neutral towards her, if only because I felt she and Cisco were kinda thrown together by the writing and not given a ton of development as a couple. I…still somewhat feel this way, but I also like the two of them together…and as far as Cisco ships go, Kamisco’s my favorite 💞 (Goldenvibe is second for me, and I’ve been warming up to that more lately too)

Also, since Kamilla is your favorite, I’ve become fonder of her and Kamisco through following you 🥰 Kamilla is sweet, driven, and when the show does allow them to spend time together onscreen, they seem to get each other in a very special way. It’s not my favorite ship, but I find it a sweet one regardless.

As for “the fandom’s so mean”…something I’ve noticed is how some Caitlin/Cisco shippers tend to write Kamisco (and Kamilla, by extension) as very boring/bland/not right for Cisco. Which…fine, people can have ship preferences, but I remember one fic in which a character told Cisco, “[Kamilla’s] nice, but you deserve better than nice”, and that irked me.

Like…I get that Kamisco isn’t as developed as Caitlin and Cisco’s friendship, and even I shipped Caitlin/Cisco for a time, but…it rubs me the wrong way to see a white woman prioritized over a WOC as Cisco’s love interest when canonically, he’s only ever romantically been interested in said WOC and not the white woman. I get the fondness for Caitlin/Cisco, but if you need to throw Kamilla, a WOC and Cisco’s canon love interest, under the bus to do it…I question how strong your ship really is.

(Fun fact, fics like this are part of the reason I don’t really ship Caitlin/Cisco anymore!)

Joe West:

So…I have mixed opinions. I love him in most of the show, especially his relationships with Barry, Iris, Cisco, and Wally. Even his dynamic with Harry in s2!

I don’t, however, like him in s1 with Iris, and even with Barry, mostly pre-reveal. When he’s shooting down Barry at every turn, making him feel stupid, not even entertaining the idea of the impossible, not even stopping when he sees Barry’s given up the fight…yeah, that was sucky of him. It shouldn’t have taken Iris’s intervening for him to back off.

And with Iris…the lying, the gaslighting, the coddling…listen, I get he’s overprotective, but he is way moreso of Iris than Barry. Keeping her out of the loop for so long and not even apologizing to her?? Joe, Barry made his choice, but you also asked him to do it! You lied to Iris for months and acted like she was crazy when she mentioned seeing the Streak! You even got mad at Barry for Iris’s choice to put her name on her blog!

And that stuff with Eddie…ugh, that’s infuriating. The way Joe acts so entitled to her love life in s1, the way he denies Eddie permission to propose for ages just because he thinks he knows better than Iris who she should marry?? And the show doesn’t win any points with me for treating him as being right for that.

Oh, and also Armageddon?? When he yells at Barry and Iris for wanting to let Thawne die?? Saying they’d be destroying their family by doing so?? JOE CAN YOU BFFR?? We’re talking about EOBARD THAWNE! Killed Nora Allen, framed Henry Allen, stalked your son-in-law, killed Cisco, killed Eddie, killed your granddaughter, changed time and almost married your daughter??

I do love him in the rest of the show though, I think he’s a great fountain of wisdom and his relationships with his kids shine (hence the square with all the hearts, because when those relationships are at the forefront outside of s1, it’s like magic). It’s just those instances when I dislike him.
