Plant of the Day
Friday 1 December 2023
A wonderful foliage plant Begonia luxurians (palm-leaf begonia) had large palmate leaves with reddish stems. It is tender so can be grown in a container for a cool glasshouse or planted out in the summer to add an exotic effect.

There are many, many Begonia species, and lots of them are native or even endemic to Mexico. This beautiful white begonia is Begonia michoacana, a relatively uncommon species from the state of Michoacán and surrounding southwestern Pacific Mexico. It's considered a geophyte, meaning that it has a large underground structure for nutrient storage, enabling it to come back "from the root" (or in this case, from the tuber).

Last evening we had a big windstorm that knocked over plants and broke one of my pots 😢 but later the storm beings threw handfuls (handsful?) of jewels over the garden as if to say sorry.
