A killer on the loose, dangerous magic, and the threat of losing the blossoming relationship from warring academics who want to erase her beloved's memories, Catrin has her work cut out for her in the sequel to Blood and Moonlight. Catrin and Simon are on the run after their explosive confrontation with a depraved killer. Catrin is a Selenae novice and Simon is a brilliant criminal profiler, yet now they both have to start over in Londunium as Catrin hopes to discover more about her newfound magic. To avoid suspicion they pretend to be a married couple but then the ruthless council of magical leaders at the local Selenae university discover Catrin's forbidden "marriage" to an outside and threaten to erase Simon's memories to protect their secrets. Catrin and Simon must now navigate a complicated chess game between powerful individuals who want nothing more than to take Catrin's magic for themselves while also figuring out who the killer of a string of mutilated bodies is. What was suppose to be a new start is an even more complicated path for the lovers but they'll have to find a way to navigate the shadows if they want their romance to work out. This was a really interesting finale to the the duology, it was much more of a dark academia/murder mystery with a bit of romance. I liked the overall ending to the mystery and overall really enjoyed the series. If you enjoy murder mysteries with a bit of romance and magic definitely give this series a go!

Two more recent reads...
Blood and Moonlight, by Erin Beaty: Totally LOVED this one! Super creepy fantasy mystery, with a sweet side of romance. A whole lot going on... Fascinating exploration of mental health. Cat's job is basically climbing around construction sites looking for architectural trouble (amazing!), which has nothing to do with either her newly discovered magical abilities or the whole murdering plot.
The central mystery has very Jack-the-ripper vibes. I spent most of the book absolutely certain I knew who the killer was - a conclusion that Cat briefly shared near the end of the story - but was (thankfully) wrong. The all-too-common trope "I must keep secrets" frequently had me internally screaming (FOR THE LOVE OF FUZZY BUNNIES CAT, JUST TALK TO SOMEONE), but almost always understandable here. I fully wept several times. I cannot wait to read more from Cat and Simon!!
Violet Made of Thorns, by Gina Chen: A very twisty fantasy! Thoroughly (enjoyably) frustrating! I loved that Violet was unapologetically an extremely skilled grifter, often carefully saying exactly what people want/need to hear. No one here is fully good (except Cyrus' sister Camilla, who is absolutely perfect). Another story where a whole lot of trouble could have been avoided if central characters would have just talked to one another! Where do they go from here?! I want to know, I would read more about Violet navigating life after the events of this book. Gimme another!!
