Book 420
Darger: The Henry Darger Collection at the American Folk Art Museum
Brooke Davis Anderson
American Folk Art Museum / Harry N. Abrams, Inc. 2001
By all accounts, Henry Darger (1892-1973) lived a solitary and lonely existence, working as a hospital janitor on Chicago’s North Side. Shortly before his death at the age of 81, Darger’s landlords, Nathan and Kiyoko Lerner, discovered something astonishing: some 350 watercolor, pencil, collage and carbon-traced drawings, most of which were stitched into three enormous albums, as well as seven typewritten hand-bound books, thousands of bundled sheets of typewritten text, and numerous journals, ledgers, and scrapbooks. The centerpiece of the discovery was a monumental 15,000-page fantasy novel—The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What Is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinnian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion—illustrated with hundreds of scroll-like illustrations, some as large as 30 feet wide and painted on both sides. Today, Darger is one of the most famous—and controversial—figures in the history of outsider art, and this book provides a fascinating glimpse into Darger’s private, innocent, and occasionally deeply disturbing world.

al things considered — when i post my masterpiece #1133
Tumblr media
first posted in facebook november 13, 2022
michaelina wautier -- "self-portrait" (ca. 1649)
"we knew nothing about her. as a specialist working in the field, i didn’t know she existed" ... christopher atkins (director of the center for netherlandish art at the museum of fine arts)
"'it’s really pretty amazing,' said atkins, describing how art historians have traditionally focused on male artists from the era. 'how did we miss these things as a field for so long?'" ... malcolm gay
"i wonder if institutions know it is a problem. there is a lot of discussion about women having more exhibitions, so from the outside it seems like we are celebrating women of different ages. but i wonder if institutions realize that there needs to be a lot more work done. maybe they don’t understand how imbalanced it is" ... naima keith (vice president of education and public programs, los angeles county museum of art)
"the explanation that women [are poorly represented because they] have often decided to leave the art world? i don’t believe that for a minute. i think there have been women working hard in the art world forever and if we haven’t seen them, then shame on us" ... brooke davis anderson (director, the museum at the pennsylvania academy of the fine arts)
"i call bullshit on the idea that it takes a while [to see change]. how much more time does it take? if a new generation of art historians and curators have to be resensitized to this then my god, we have amnesia at this point" ... michelle millar fisher, (curator of contemporary decorative arts, museum of fine arts, boston)
"well, first of AL, i probably would fire christopher atkins (the alleged director of the NETHERLANDISH art at the museum of fine arts here in boston) IF he really did not even know that a master from the 'dutch golden age' like wautier even existed" ... al janik

Fats Waller - Ain't Misbehavin' 1929
"Ain't Misbehavin'" is a 1929 song written by Fats Waller, Harry Brooks and Andy Razaf. Waller recorded the original version that year for Victor Records and also later re-recorded the song for the 1943 film Stormy Weather. In a 1941 interview with Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Fats claimed the song was written while "lodging" in alimony prison, and that is why he was not "misbehaving".
There were six other recordings of the song released in 1929, including versions by Louis Armstrong, Ruth Etting, Gene Austin, and Leo Reisman and His Orchestra. It was also used in the off-Broadway musical Connie's Hot Chocolates.
It has been recorded by many other performers over the years, including Billie Holiday, Eartha Kitt, Ella Fitzgerald, Django Reinhardt, Miles Davis, Ray Charles, Nat King Cole, and Willie Nelson, to name a few.
The original 1929 recording of "Ain't Misbehavin'" by Fats Waller received the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1984, and it was one of fifty recordings selected for inclusion in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress in 2004.
"Ain't Misbehavin'" received a total of 79,6% yes votes!

🔎 YA Under the Radar 7 🔍
I have been working on this list in the series all year 😂 it just took me that long to read a decent amount of underrated YA - but I got there in the end and I'm pretty happy with the recs on this list 🥰
there are rainbow flags next to LGBT+ rep, wheelchair symbols next to disability rep and koalas next to Australia YA simply because there's a lot of that on this particular list
so take a gander and maybe consider picking up a title or two (or ten) in 2024 to support lesser-known authors and books 😊

As promised, now that we're a few days out from the final submissions deadline, here is a list of all the actors who have been submitted and will be in the bracket so far! If you submitted someone and they aren't on this list, there is a chance I felt they fell into that category of not really having a super strong connection to sci fi/fantasy generally and where the roles noted for them weren't necessarily roles that they're very well known for, or in a couple of cases there were people submitted where the work listed for them was all post 2000. But there were only a very small handful of actors like that; I think almost everyone submitted should be on here.
The final deadline for submissions will still be April 27th. I'll make another post before the polls start with the finalized list of actors for the tournament.

'𝚝𝚒𝚜 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚜𝚎𝚊𝚜𝚘𝚗
hear those silver bells? it's christmas time in los angeles. some families actually do make the yuletide gay, managing to leave their troubles far away. other families have a merry little christmas even when their troubles aren't so far away. some presents might end up returned but some gifts are for keeps. other presents come when you least expect them and everyone knows the biggest present comes in the smallest box. then there are those boxes you wish you had never opened. have a holly jolly christmas, xoxo.
‹   ⅰ.   › you have been cordially invited to celebrate christmas eve at the kennedy estate in hidden hills, california. this year's theme is 'the colors of the season.' there will be different themed rooms throughout the home that will be color coordinated - red, green, white, silver, gold and black. the dress code is to wear one of these colors. admission to the party will not be granted if you are not following dress code. this is not a casual event by any means, so please do dress your best.
‹   ⅱ.   ›  the party will be taking place on discord. please keep an eye out for the link. while the event will be taking place over the span of one night rp time (december 24th, 2023), you can start writing on sunday, december 10th, 2023. threads can continue until everyone completes their writing.
‹   ⅲ.   ›  in the spirit of the season, kathy kennedy hosts an annual 'kathy kringle' where she pairs up people from the party to exchange gifts with one another. under the cut, please find your partner. there will be a channel in the event server where you can drop pictures and edits of the gifts called 'kathy kringle' and you can write out your characters exchanging gifts in the 'grand foyer' channel
‹   ⅳ.   › gossip girl has eyes everywhere, especially in an event as star studded as this one. if there's anything specific that you don't want leaked, please be sure to come to me before hand. if not, everything is up for grabs and can potentially be blasted for everyone to see.
‹   ⅴ.   ›  be inclusive! make sure you're writing/plotting with everyone and most importantly, have fun!!

Hello folks,
If you have been enjoying The Main Library, please check out the other two branches.
Just in time for the holiday, announcing the grand opening of:
The Library of Paranormal Experience - this is my new blog, where I will be posting my own art and photography. I am an amateur miniature photographer, and my photos nearly all have something to do with the paranormal (e.g. UFOs, ghosts, cryptids, and other general weirdness) and look something like this:
Tumblr media
The Library of a Former Bookseller - here, I am cataloguing my library of illustrated books, mostly devoted to natural history, art, design, typography, and other general weirdness. The average post looks more-or-less like this:
Thank you for checking them out. I appreciate it.
Be excellent to each other.
