"Dang, Mal, you've really scraped the bottom of the barrel with this one," Jayne said, looking down at the cage full of Jack Russell Terrier pups. "Although I heard there's some good eatin' on 'em for sure."
"Jayne! That ain't right!" Kaylee scolded, kneeling next to the big cage.
River giggled when one of the puppies licked her finger.
"Can taste freedom. Tastes like cornmeal."
Jayne glared at her, his hand straying to his gun.
"You keep yer mouth shut crazy-"
"Jayne, your mouth's moving. Might want to do somethin' 'bout that," Mal said, glaring at the merc. His eyes were hard and his hand was already on his gun.
Jayne threw Mal one last look before he stomped off, shouldering past Simon. The doctor glared at him before joining his sister at the cage.
"Wash!" Mal yelled to the pilot standing above him on the catwalk. "Set a course for Cassia. The client wants their goods before the week's out."
"And don't the rest of you have something else to do?" Mal added, looking at the group huddled around the crate.
The three kids shook their heads and turned back to playing with the yapping puppies.
Mal shook his head and slowly made his way to his bunk.
Sometimes the bottom of the barrel held all the treasure, Mal thought, gently patting Serenity's hull before he dropped down the ladder. Laughter sounded from the cargo bay and the Captain smiled. Just look at what it brought him.

I'm rereading Rise.
I'm at the Browncoats.
I know I'll cry but I read it anyway because you're a fantastic author and because, while I have only been to SDCC once, I can SEE the exhibition hall as the story proceeds. I can SEE everything as it happens.
Thank you for this distraction while my life implodes. This is a lifeline I knew I needed, and it was just waiting for me to dive back in.
Thank you so much.
"San Diego 2014" is a hard one. Almost all the characters are fictionalized versions of real people who volunteered to die at my convention; several won Tuckerizations in auctions to support the Trevor Project.
The one survivor was chosen by her father, who said that was all he'd be trying to accomplish in a zombie apocalypse. (Ironically, I've gotten a lot of crap for her "unrealistic"name, when she's directly named after the real person who inspired her.)
I really wish I'd been able to write the Space Crime Continuum tie-in novels.

Uhhh feel free to pick and choose!!!!! :333
19 - Dual/Brown Coat/TSM
16 - of. Like. Your choice lol
50 - Dual
22 - T-TV
42 - of uhhh. Your choice! !!
19. Vices/bad habits
Well, we already know that Dual is over-confident to the point of being reckless/arrogant, and that Browncoat needs to generally get their shit together. (Possibly it's not entirely Browncoat's fault that they've become such a simp for TV Matriarch: it might be lingering effects of the hypnosis beam, which presumably carried a command like 'get over here in a hurry'.)
Personally, I think Browncoat's outfit is crimes against fashion. The purple and yellow tie (not my cup of tea, but points for use of complementary colours) would go well with a black or very dark grey coat, but it doesn't go well with the brown. (I'd go for a light-blue tie; blue and brown is an underrated colour combo in my opinion.)
It's hard to imagine what 'vices' robots might have, because they aren't affected by drugs like we meatbags. Gambling is a possibility, but I'm not sure the Alliance even uses money; what could they gamble for?
Titan Speaker can have whatever bad habits they like; they've been through a lot and they deserve the slack.
16. Deepest darkest secret they won’t even admit to themselves
All TVs are touch-starved and need more hugs but are too proud to admit they need hugs.
50. A memory they’ve blocked out
For Dual, probably being bisected, ow. Like, they remember that it happened, but they blocked out the details.
22. Best physical feature
You're making me pick only one??! [vibrates] I think their silhouette. I like how the TVs in general are shaped.
I gotta give a shoutout to their rockstar gloves. I'll stop there before I end up listing every physical attribute of Titan TV, haha.
42. 3 comfort items
...I'll go with Scientist Toilet because why not?
Framed photo of their kitty cat from episode 16 (I reckon the skibidi cat is/was the Scientist's pet)
Microwave casserole (yes, Half-Life reference)
Knitting (he has knitting attachments for his mechanical arms)

The Ranch hand
Tumblr media
Warnings: Second time writing smut and quite honestly I still giggle like a twat when writing things like “Cock” Oh wait sorry, this is warnings for within the story? Yeah so there is some stuff I wrote about things you do with the tongue in a sexy way as well as fingers and the fact they do the horizontal pant dance against the wall.
Rating: Very much an R here people.
Summary: For Mal Reynolds, A break from illegal shenanigans and a trip to Beaumonde, leads to more than just a rendezvous with an old friend on his ranch. A new addition to the ranch captivates him and leads to more than just a friendly welcome.

Please reblog or tag on. I know it’s a bit of a niche fanbase.
Story below the cut
Mal always knew when it was time to pay Beaumonde an overdue visit. When he pined for open spaces,  when he felt the urge to feel grass under his fingertips and to sleep in a proper bed, that was usually the sign that it was time to take a much needed break from his rebellious life.
Luckily he had an old friend that resided on Beaumonde, A man called Kane. He was in his late forties, sported a greying black goatee and was bald on top. He stood at six foot one, stocky build and was a former browncoat like Mal, in fact there were a few times they fought together on the battlefield and Mal always marvelled at how level headed he always was. After the war, Kane lived the same life as Mal, until he met Rebecca and ended up settling down and running a ranch.
They stayed in touch, Kane updating Mal on his life, sharing transmissions and even introducing his daughter Amber, now four years old. On the last transmission they shared together, Kane told Mal about the new Ranch hand he had hired, excitedly told him about the new cows and even informed him of a new barn he was working on. So of course, Mal needed to stop by and see what all the fussin’ was about. It was a viable excuse in his eyes.
When he told the crew about visiting Kane’s ranch, they were more than accepting of the idea, in fact they were thrilled because it meant for the first time in a while, they could all unwind and relax.
It took them four days to get to Kane’s ranch but once they had landed they were given a warm welcome and loads of cuddles from Amber, who Zoe lovingly nicknamed the blonde whirlwind. She was a typical four year old, inquisitive, sometimes mischievous and often mastered the butter wouldn’t melt look by giving her parents big blue eyes and a rosy cheeked smile. In short she was adorable and luckily for Zoe, she managed to strike up a friendship with her daughter Emma, which also meant double the trouble.
“There he is!” Mal said happily as Kane casually strolled towards them
Kane was wearing his black Stetson, a red plaid shirt and black jeans to match his black boots. He had a big smile on his face and he threw his arms around Mal, giving him a warm hug.
“Been a while Reynolds. How’s the verse?” Kane asked him as he released him from his bear-like hug.
“Still plying me with credits and adventures aplenty” Mal replied happily “How’s the Ranch? And where is your smoking hot wife?”
“She’s hiding in the barn with the new farm hand, settling in the new cows. Come and say hi” Kane says encouragingly
“Say hi to the cows or hi to the farm hand?” Mal asked
“How about both?” Kane replied with a playful look in his eyes
“I don’t like that look Kane, that look spells trouble. Every time” Mal protested before begrudgingly following his friend.
There was no denying that Kane and Rebecca had made the ranch their own. Their six bedroom ranch house had been completely renovated to their style and tastes, the once white exterior panelling replaced with a mix of Sandstone and timber, making it strong against the elements of Beaumonde. The timber was stained with a mahogany stainer and the sandstone still clean looking despite being exposed to the elements. The grass gardens were beautifully landscaped and well maintained and the surrounding areas for the cows and harvest were also kept in good condition. There was no denying that Kane worked hard to get it to that level.
As well as the house, Kane had completely renovated the barns and stables within the lands of the ranch and Mal couldn’t help but fall in love with the place.
“You must have spent many credits getting this place looking all shiny” Mal said as he gazed across the land.
“I don’t like to think about it,” Kane replied as he walked towards the barn, where a stunning red haired woman stood waiting for him.
Rebecca. A former outlaw with long flowing red hair, emerald green eyes, stunning cheekbones, freckles on her nose and a sharp jawline. She was, as Mal said, smoking hot and Kane was indeed extremely lucky to have met her, especially since he fell into a river while drunk and she had to dive in and save him. She was dressed similarly to Kane, only her jeans were faded blue and the plaid red shirt had smaller black checks in comparison to Kanes.
“Hi Mal!” She shouted before Kane pulled her in for a passionate kiss.
Mal rolled his eyes and chuckled “Put her down stud”
Kane just smirked and gave Rebecca a quick peck on the cheek before heading into the barn, allowing Rebecca to give Mal a cuddle.
“Been a while Cowboy. Come on, I got someone who wants to meet you” She said happily
“The cows?” Mal asked
“The cows as well” Rebecca replied as she escorted him to one of the freshly made pens; The cows settled themselves in and got themselves acquainted with their new surroundings and right in the middle of the pen, throwing out feed, was the new farm hand. A petite woman, athletic build with long, wavy, raven black hair pulled into a tail. She wore a white open blouse with a black vest underneath, black cargo pants with tanned boots and a black stetson. She was gorgeous and Mal couldn’t stop staring.
“Russo, this is our good friend Mal” Rebecca said, snapping Mal out of his thoughts.
“THE Captain Mal? Mal Reynolds?” She asked as her eyes grew big “I have heard alot about you from these two. Apparently you’re the reason these two met” She said happily
“Err...Yeah, I was. We got blind drunk and he fell into a river and was saved by Rebecca and I apparently was passed out on the river bank” Mal replied, stumbling over his words a little.
Russo chuckled and then gave him a playful wink “He’s cute, I like him”
“He’s only cute some of the time, rest of the time he’s a real jerk!” Kane replied playfully “Come on Mal, let's get you and the crew fed. Rebecca made her famous mac and cheese and Amber made cookies”
“Okay” Mal replied, still watching Russo “Bye Russo!”
“Bye Mal” Russo replied with a giggle, as she continued to put out feed
Kane wrapped his left arm around Mal’s shoulders and guided him in the direction of the ranch house, chuckling every time his friend kept looking back at Russo. He knew Russo was his type, strong, independent woman who was often accepted as an honorary bro among male friends. A little like Rebecca in a way.
“So what do you think of Russo?” Kane asked, already knowing his answer.
Mal cleared his throat, glancing back at her once again.“She’s a fine woman, stunning in fact…where did you get her from?”
“I’ll tell you tomorrow. Come on, let's eat” Kane replied as he patted his shoulder.
Both men made their way back to the ranch house and began preparing a feast. Mac and cheese was on the menu, along with steak, salad, freshly made cornbread, chicken wings and burgers.
The entire crew, plus Kane and his family, fitted around the long dining table that he had crafted himself. Food was passed around, plates were stacked high with food and everyone talked and shared stories of their adventures around the verse. Yet throughout the whole exchange of stories and food, Mal and Russo were busy exchanging sultry looks and seductive gestures, tempting each other, getting under each other's skin as they attempted to drive the other wild. It was just a question of who would break first.
As the evening grew late and the coffee was drunk, people began to retire to their rooms. The first being that of Amber and Zoe’s daughter Emma, understandably, followed shortly after by Zoe. A few hours later Kaylee followed in pursuit, closely followed by the Tams. By the time it was midnight, Jayne was barely hanging on and those who remained were also contemplating calling it a night. Rebecca was curled up on Kane’s lap, snuggled into his chest as she rested her eyes, the man holding her in his arms, kissing her forehead gently before brushing her hair away from her eyes.
“Okay stunner…I think it’s time we crawled into bed and let these folk get some beauty sleep” He said softly.
“Oh… no need, no amount of sleep will make me beautiful” Mal piped up as he yawned and rubbed his eyes.
“And I am already beautiful” Jayne said sleepily as he slowly hauled himself off the couch “But it doesn't hurt to top up once in a while. Have a good sleep you darn animals”
Mal chuckled as he watched Jayne go up, closely followed by Kane who had managed to lift Rebecca up and was carrying her bridal style.
“Me and the hot smoking wife are also going up, been a long day for us both. Have a good night kids” He says, looking at both Mal and Russo.
Mal smiled and saluted the man as he climbed the stairs. It was just him and Russo left and the sexul tension in the room went up a notch. He gazed upon her, studying her as she locked eyes with him, a sultry smile on her lips as she ran her finger around the rim of her cup, gathering up the cream and putting it to her lips before slowly sucking off the cream from her fingertip.
It got the desired effect she craved, causing Mal to squirm as he fought back his urges. She giggled when his cheeks flushed red and he tried to clear his throat.
“You haven’t taken your eyes off me all day cowboy” She purred as she slowly stood up from the table “What’s got your attention?”
“You’re my type.” Mal blurts out.
“And what exactly is your type Captain Reynolds?” She asked as she slowly sauntered over to him.
“I like a woman who can stand her ground, someone who has a sense of humour and is a little bit feisty” Mal replied honestly as he held her gaze. “I’m sensing that in bucket loads with you”
She smiled sweetly at him and then straddled him on the chair, running her finger down his cheek.
“Is that your gun prodding me?” She asked with a knowing look
“No, I left that in the shi-ooooh you already know the answer” Mal replied innocently
“Yuh huh. So, I think we need to go and deal with this, somewhere away from the small folks ears” Russo suggested
“Barn?” Mal asked
“Barn” Russo responded as she ran her hand slowly down his chest to his belt. Giving it a tug “You in stud?”
“Oh I will be” Mal responded, gazing upon her in desire
In that brief pause, the fire between them grew, the heat becoming insatiable. There was a want and a need to give into their desires, to know the other intimately while enjoying the ecstasy that came with it.  Mal caved first as he leaned in and pressed his soft lips against hers, his eyes closing as she deepened the kiss, parting her lips, allowing his tongue to plunge into her mouth, exploring and dancing with her own tongue. Small happy noises escaped her mouth as the kiss grew more heated, his hands becoming knotted in her vest while her nimble fingers expertly unfastened a few buttons on his shirt. Both getting caught up in their lust for one another, forgetting their surroundings momentarily before Russo broke off the kiss.
“Barn” She growled into his ear as she climbed off his lap.
Mal gulped and then scrambled from the chair he occupied, following Russo like a puppy dog to the barn. She led him through a side door, closing it behind them as she turned on the lights and dimmed them on the sophisticated system that Kane had set up. Something Mal was about to question before Russo yanked him away, dragging him into the hay room and allowing him to manhandle her, pinning her against a wall as their lips met again, the kiss more heated than the last as their lips frequently pushed against each other, her hands effortlessly sliding underneath his leather suspenders, pushing them down his arms while he shucked them off, slipping his hands underneath her vest top, slowly hitching it up her toned body, breaking off the kiss to allow her to pull it over her head and throw it on the floor, exposing the black lace bralette she was wearing underneath.
Her nimble fingers then got to work on unfastening the rest of the buttons on his shirt while she kissed and nibbled his neck, making him groan under her touch. Once she unfastened his shirt, she took a moment to let her fingers explore his toned physique before she delicately dragged them over his stomach down to his belt, slowly unfastening it. He in turn shucked off his shirt and dropped it on the floor, reclaiming her lips once more while his fingers tugged at her trouser waistband. A growl of frustration escaped his lips before he got creative. He slipped his hand into her trousers, his fingers tip-toeing their way down to her moistened entrance, effortlessly slipping beneath her lace underwear before gracefully entering her with two of his long fingers.
A small gasp escaped her lips as his fingers got to work, gently pumping In and out, hitting her soft spongy spot, over and over again, small little moans falling from her mouth. Her body tingled with excitement from the unexpected intrusion and welcomed the way the man dragged his lips down her neck, occasionally nibbling on her sweet spots to make her knees shake and buckle from the overwhelming pleasure coursing through her body, slowly becoming undone by his touch.
She tugged at his trousers, desperately wanting his engorged member burrowed deep within her but he had other ideas in mind as a smirk spread across his lips. He stole her lips again as he slowly removed his fingers from her silky depths and slowly began edging her trousers down, taking her underwear with them. He trailed kisses down from neck to her chest, distracting her momentarily before he swiftly pushed down her trousers, moving with the action, his lips now gently kissing her stomach, working her into a frenzy as her body tensed in anticipation of his next move as his lips moved further down, his fingers gently running down her legs to the back of her knees, holding there while he began to deflower her with his tongue.
She bucked her hips, mewling as she felt his tongue explore her core, swiping, tasting and teasing her as she ran her fingers through his thick luscious hair, her fingers getting themselves knotted, as tiny gasps fell from her lips. The man certainly knew his way around as he worked her sweet spot, bringing her close to releasing her sweet necter. She bit her lip and threw her head back, toes curling as she battled with herself, not wanting to reach her peak before the main event but he was making it difficult for her as she could feel herself slowly start to unravel before him. Somehow the man sensed her climax was starting to peak and slowly withdrew his dangerous tongue and began kissing his way back up to her soft lips, allowing her to taste her own sweet arousal. He pressed himself up against her as their tongues danced, placing his hands on the wall behind her as he allowed her hands to explore once more, delicate fingers feeling every gnarly scar on his body, his skin reacting by erupting into goosebumps, hair standing on end as she caressed his toned stomach before latching onto the waistband of his trousers, unbuttoning them and sliding them down, releasing his hardened cock.
She looked down at the sight before her, taking in the size of his package before he masterfully lifted her up, hooking his arms under her legs and allowing her to wrap her legs around his waist. They took a moment to catch their breaths and gaze upon each other, admiring each other's natural beauty. To him, she was stunning and everything he craved for in his ideal woman. To her he was handsome, charming and strong. They didn’t exchange words, they didn’t need to, it was in their eyes what they desired.
Then their lips found each other once again, frantically clashing, caressing and pressing over and over again, while he slowly adjusted his position and as he deepened the kiss, he carefully pushed his hips forward and entered her, filling her entirely with his member. Her walls stretched to accommodate him as a loud audible gasp escaped her mouth. He allowed her a moment to adjust to his size, feeling her tighten around him before she gave him the nod to continue. He started slowly, gentle thrusts while he gently nipped and nibbled her collarbone, causing her nerves to spark little ripples of ecstasy through her body; She was already turned on by the way he took charge and pinned her to the wall, yet when he hoisted her up with his strong arms and began to slowly thrust his hips, he made her feel electric and she couldn’t resist dragging her nails down his spine, causing him to growl in his throat, urging him to up his tempo.
She craved to be manhandled, to be slammed against the wall and ploughed within an inch of her life. She enjoyed it rough but at the moment he was either being too polite or he was building up to it.
“Harder” She whimpered as she dug her nails into his back.
"Harder?” He asked
“Mmmhmm, I like it rough” She purred as she nibbled his ear.
It provoked a response from Mal. He gripped her thighs tightly, digging his nails into her skin as he upped his rhythm. A growl escaped his lips as his thrusts became more powerful, causing Russo to gasp and moan as she clamped around him.
"I thought I was the captain" He growled against her ear while keeping pace.
“You are” Russo moaned as she ran her fingers through his hair, losing herself
“Good girl, now you better try and not come undone before I tell you to” Mal ordered as he pushed himself in a little more, causing her to whimper while her body trembled in ecstasy “And if you do, I’ll have no choice but to punish you. You understand?”
She nodded her head, unable to speak as she started to fall into a blissful haze. She could feel him pounding her sweet spot over and over again, trying desperately not to release her sweet nectar before being commanded to. Little whimpers fell from her lips, almost begging him but the more she whined, the more he slowed and the more he relished her little pleas for release.
"Someone's a little sensitive" He purred as he nibbled her neck.
"Please captain" She pleaded "I can't hold on much longer.
She could feel a smile spread across his lips, her begging him was like music to his ears. He wanted to play a little more and so he kept his thrusts slow and gentle, freeing one hand to caress her breasts while his lips nibbled, licked and sucked every inch of her neck and collarbone. It was driving her insane, every moan and groan was a plea for release, each slow and gentle thrust was almost excruciating, as her body ached for him to fill her with his seed. He knew how to make her wait, knew how to play her body and bring her to the brink of release and then delaying that final push. He took pleasure from it, enjoyed riling her up and leaving her suspended in bliss, yet despite the teasing, even he longed for his own release. He gently caressed her lips with his own, gazing at her momentarily before slowly nodding his head.
“Alright…I think I’ve worked you hard enough” He purrs softly
He steals another kiss from her before he begins to increase his rhythm, his thrusts becoming more and more powerful as he begins to start slamming his hips against hers, causing a rhythmic thudding against the stable wall while he pounds her sweet spot over and over again groaning and grunting with pleasure, his hands gripping her legs tightly, her hands running through his hair as they both start to reach their peak, their movements more frantic before both are overcome with a wave of pleasure washing over them. Russo’s toes curled as her body came alive, pleasure flowing from her core, causing her skin to erupt in goosebumps as her whole body trembled at his touch, the sheer intensity causing her to moan his name over and over again, urging him on before she could feel him erupting within her core, his legs buckling slightly as he too is overcome with pleasure, his nerves sparking to life with ecstasy as he chants her name before resting his head on the wall behind her, panting, skin glistening with sweat.
They took a moment to bask in the afterglow, regaining their breath and enjoying each other's warmth before Mal carefully pulled himself out and eased her legs down, stealing a few kisses in the process as she rested her hands on his chest.
“...Well….you certainly live up to the name…the great Mal Reynolds” She purred.
“Was I everything you hoped for?” He asked with a grin, holding her gaze.
“Everything and more, wouldn’t mind you boarding me once again” She replied playfully, causing a chuckle to escape Mal’s lips.
“That’s the best one yet. So, round two tomorrow? I’ll let you take the controls this time” He offers as he gathers up their clothes
Russo licked her lips as she studied his naked form, taking in every inch of his body while he sauntered over and handed over her clothes.
"Deal" She replied as she took her clothes from him "Let's see what you got cowboy"

Crossover Fic Recs
I was thinking about the fact that I love Crossovers (heck, i have more then 20 that I've written and more in the works) and thought I'd make a Crossover Rec List. I know i've read a good number, but these are my biggest faves:
1 - Browncoat, Green Eyes by nonjon
Read on Fanfic.net or AO3
Fandoms: Harry Potter/Firefly
Ship: River/Harry
Rated: M
Words: 298,538
Summary:
Post Serenity. Two years have passed since the secret of the planet Miranda got broadcast across the whole 'verse in 2518. The crew of Serenity finally hires a new pilot, but he's a bit peculiar.
2 - By Your Side is Where I Belong by TexasBean / @texasbeanwrites-stuffhere
Unfinished
Fandoms: One Piece/Naruto
Main Characters: Zoro, Naruto, Gaara
Rated T
Words: 378,159
Summary:
All he was supposed to do in Konoha was collect the reward for the bounty and be on his way. But when Zoro defends some kid from a drunk during a festival, he didn't realize he'd get stuck with Naruto. Arriving in Suna, the pair meet Gaara, who ends up leaving with them when he sadly has no reason to stay. Luffy is overjoyed to get three nakama at the start of his journey… The world is much bigger than people realize, and the Straw-Hat Pirates find themselves wrapped up in the mysteries of the Biju, Ancient Weapons, and earning the ire of the World Government while they’re at it. The unwitting presence of one resulting in the absence of others has far-reaching consequences.
3 - Trust Me, I'm an Alchemist by @metisket
Fandoms: Full Metal Alchemist/Yuri on Ice
Rated : T
Words: 54,791
Ships: Yuuri/Victor
Summary:
In which Yuri Plisetsky began life with the name Edward Elric, and this has made the world of figure skating a significantly stranger and more alarming place. “Are you saying you lived a life of crime before you began skating?” “I’m gonna have to check the statute of limitations on a couple things and get back to you on that.”
4 -There May Be Some Collateral Damage by metisket
Fandoms: Bleach/Harry Potter
Rating: T
Words: 61,209
Summary:
Ichigo’s been ordered to go undercover at a magic school to bodyguard a kid named Harry Potter, and this would be fine, except that he’s about as good at bodyguarding as he is at magic. And he considers it a good day, magic-wise, if he hasn’t set anything on fire.
I first read Browncoat, Green Eyes on fanfic.net after my husband sent me the link and I occasionally checked AO3 to see if it was ported over since I don't use FF.net anymore and I found out literally TONIGHT that it's there, so marking THAT to read. I am VERY happy.
And I just realized that the rest of my faves were found by @socially-awkward-chocobo, so I get to blame her for them :D
*note - i tried to tag metisket, since I, for one, love knowing when I'm on a rec list but even though the tumblr shows as active, tumblr won't let me tag :(

Find the Word!
Thanks for the tag, @marinesocks! My words to find were favor, under, feet, raise, and life. The excerpts are taken from Castle in the Ice and my still unnamed WIP.
Tagging @bardic-tales, @365runesofwriting, @ghost-town-story, @houndsofcorduff, @elijahrichardwrites, and @j-1173. Your words are weary, storm, flourish, gray, and patience. If you can't find one, you have to include a fun fact about your WIP, your writing process, or one of your characters! (shamelessly stolen from @marinesocks, so blame her!)
Favor
His confidence wavered for a second. “You can’t threaten me—you can’t threaten my family.”
“I’m not a cop,” Jimmy said as he stood from the table. “I don’t see the big deal about all-girl schools, but St. Andrew’s looks like a nice place.”
Kaelakekaua watched him walk to the door and open it. “You can’t hurt her,” he said, although he looked a little less certain. “It’s not legal!”
The detectives met Jimmy in the hallway outside.
“Well, congratulations, you got a reaction from him,” Cooper said. “What’s your plan now?”
Jimmy didn’t look back at the interrogation room, instead walking back out to the lobby. “He kidnapped my brother, so I’ll return the favor. I’m gonna kidnap his daughter.”
Under
A heavy weight on his stomach followed by a loud “Woof!” woke Jimmy much too early for his liking. He groaned and tried to push Avalanche off, but she pushed back. Digging in her claws, she smacked him in the face with one of her paws.
Jimmy’s eyes snapped open. “Fuck off,” he growled, glaring at her. When she hopped down, he shifted into a more comfortable position and draped an arm over his eyes.
Avalanche leaped up onto the couch behind him and dug her paws under his side. The next thing Jimmy knew, he was landing on the floor.
“Avalanche!” He curled up into a ball, too tired to get mad. “Now my face hurts.”
Feet
He helped Aero up to his feet, leading him to the door. “Hm, that depends on how bad it is, so’n it does. I can set an arm, but I was never all that good with ribs. I can remove them, if that’s needed.”
“Whoa!” Aero balked at that, his tone growing alarmed. He pushed against Marrick’s hand in a futile attempt to get away. “Do I not get a say in this?”
“No, you didn’t even think to mention they were broken,” Marrick said, though Aero missed the humor in his eyes. “How can we know you’ll vote for what’s best for you if’n you don’t even say you broke your ribs?”
“I thought they were only bruised, I swear. If I had but known—”
Marrick whisked him away, back out of the room and down the hall. He glanced back to flash the others a playful wink as he left, Aero thoroughly convinced he might lose his ribs.
Raise
“Stay close,” Marrick said to him. He had to raise his voice over the noisy wolvins and growing storm. “You need someone at your back when facing these beasts, sure’n you do.”
“I’ve got you,” he said as he watched the pack approach, and then added, “I think Spirit’s fine.”
Spirit dropped the first wolvin with an easy sideswipe, cutting half its head off. She punched the second one in the face, then slit its throat. When she joined them again, she said, “That didn’t take long at all.”
“We got more for you,” Marrick said.
Raavi fired another arrow into the lead group. The wolvins were now close enough that they could see the arrow sink deep into the front-runner’s chest. Rather than stumbling, however, the wolvin only snarled and snapped at the fletching protruding from its body.
Spirit gave her sword a flick to shake some blood from the blade. “Yay!” she said.
Life
“Oh!” he said when he saw what was in the room. His tail quivered in excitement. “Humans! Isn’t this a delightful birthday surprise?”
The browncoat left, indicating with her tail that Mochta and the humans should follow her. “They’ll let us know when he’s done.”
“Do they know how to fix him?” Hank asked, and the doctor huffed at him.
He made a show of frowning, twitching his whiskers, pulling the corners of his mouth down, and furrowing his furry brows as best he could, so that they would know what he was doing. “I am a surgical doctor, do you not see? I have made it my life to know all there is about fixing up anything there is. Do I know how to—why don’t you just run along and let me get to it? Smelly human, you’re getting in the way.”

Serenity was quietest at night.
Simon sat reading on the common room couch, his sore leg stretched out in front of him. The only sound in the room was the silent turning of the pages and Serenity's gentle hum. The book dipped, Simon's eyes fluttering shut, when a sudden thump from the cargo bay made him start awake and drop the book, the movement jostling his sore leg.
"Wo de ma he ta de fen kuang de wai sheng dou-"
"Easy there, doc," Mal said, appearing in the doorway, the portable Cortex held in his hands. "Just me."
"I don't know if that's better or worse." Simon muttered, grimacing when a spasm shot through his leg.
The captain smiled and put the Cortex down on the coffee table next to Simon's leg, taking a seat on the chair next to the couch. "Leg botherin' ya?"
"Not at all," Simon deadpanned. "I've had mosquito bites worse than this."
Mal laughed, a small smile making its way onto the doctor's face.
The Cortex pinged and Mal's smile fell.
"Is something wrong, Captain?" Simon asked. He tried to push himself up but hissed when his leg shifted. Mal passed him the screen and sighed.
"They, uh, they updated yer wanted bulletins."
He didn't need to see the screen to know why the boy froze. Hell, he would have done the same.
Both of the Tam's bounty had been increased with a 1000 credits and the words Dead or Alive flashed next to Simon's name.
It was quiet, Serenity's engine a steady hum.
"It's a few days old-"
Simon's voice was soft and Mal almost missed it, but missing what he said was as hard as missing a brick wall.
"We'll leave."
Mal stopped, stunned.
"Huh?"
Simon's eyes were downcast, his jaw set and his body tensed.
"I said, Captain, we'll leave. River and I are a threat in more ways than one and-"
"Doc."
His voice was harsh but Mal wanted, needed, the kid to hear this.
"Doc, listen to me. You and yer sister are crew and that's not nothing. Ya ain't leavin' this ship just because yer bounty'd been increased. Yer safer here than anywhere else."
He tried to catch the doctor's eyes.
"If ya want to leave, then so be it. But it should be yer own decision, not out o' some misplaced sense of protection. We can look after our own, and, well," Mal smiled, "having a doc on board to patch us up after ain't too bad."
Simon laughed quietly and looked up at the Captain with suspiciously bright eyes.
"Why?"
"How many times do I have to say this, son? Yer on my crew."
Mal gently clapped Simon on the shoulder, careful not to jostle him.
He stood up, picking up the fallen book and handing it to Simon before he left. Just as he reached the doorway, he turned back. Simon looked up at him, frowning.
"Oh, and doc?"
"Yes Captain?"
"Try not to get shot again, dong ma?"

c3x20 a slice of death
I love this episode already. I've worked in family owned diners with rivalries, I love stories about italian new yorkers & I've definitely seen goncharov (tho that also had russian mafia).
Poor alexis, that is humiliating! This is so sad! Who has a live band playing? She's 17 cool. She was 15 in s1e1 & she's 17 near the end of s3. Cool
I love all the nicks & their names this is the life. It reminds me of that steven universe episode with the fry shop & pizza shop.
Not super funny, either of you. Nick Jr. Uh, authentic, not terrific. I love the new york pizza scene & how everyone knows who is whom but it's so confusing & I loved this episode so much when I first watched it
Oh but I kept her number! I don't think there's going to be a second date. So new york. So italian. This Is The Best Episode Ever. Exactly! Who wrote this episode??? It is amazing!
Maybe they did get it from a medical school, you don't know beckett!
They used the same audio already. I mean it's not a big deal.
Costumes: Rick: brown coat (gasp browncoat?) & violet/blue shirt Ryan: tbh he looks like he did in s1 a bit. idk why. So what looks like an aviator jacket, nice dark brown, leather looking, has the fuzz in the hood/collar, no lapels, dark brown tie, actually a good brown, & a plaid-type dress shirt (purple, maybe another shade of purple idk, probs black & white in there too, maybe grey & blue & pink... idk I'm not good with this... I think it's brown actually) Espt: Leather jacket & normal collared shirt underneath. It's like, safari style almost. Collared so it is fancy enough for work, but the put-together of the blocks is odd. Beckett: Detective coat. (double breasted light grey trench coat looking thing)
Castle: We should talk to the other Nicks. Ryan: He's right. Pizza is serious business in this town. (Remember that mafia family who used the pizza shop as a front but then became legitimate bc the pizza was so good?) Beckett: Ok you can talk to them. Ryan: wait; Me? no; why? (why is he upset at this...? I'm also rly sad castle didn't go with him)
Pottery kiln? Like Joy from the The Cat Who series! She made red ceramics & when I say she MADE red ceramics...
RM: I heard you found a body in the oven at terrific nick's KB: Authentic nick's RM: OH THANK GOD, the wife loves terrific nick's lmao full bodied flavour (btw yes I do indeed love his jacket)
Castle that's a heck of a leap & the audio reflecting the mood XD Gordon BURNS??? b'y the pic would have also been melted.
Oh. Poor man. Hugs to him. Oh not the pizza wars XD.
Terrific, authentic, & otherwise.
Sounds like u'r talking from experience espt. Did you survive firefights with gangbangers & then got killed doing a speeding ticket? & then came back to life to join homicide so u could investigat ur own death?
Nice handkerchief, murdoch vibes. KB: U ok? RC: Yeah no yeah... I wonder if he ever did that with alexis, had her colouring while he was signing books. Espt had that much information thrown at him in that short amount of time he was gone? Poor ryan, exiled to work talking to all the other nicks, & then exiled again to work computer stuff Wrong nick bro XD I thought he meant nick jr.
Hold the extra cheese wasn't funny.
Oh def steal the oven. Ah yes italian new york mobster money laundering in a pizza place? So the captions are willing to put nada in the captions here but put "speaking spanish" last episode when esposito said it? Seriously? Seriously?? You couldn't write "nada"? Like at this point it's a loanword & everyone knows what it means, but even so you should still write down everything that is said. Not translated, not "speaking [language]" but the actual words.
Like how he says "luds" for L.U.D.s I love his fake little accent he does "i'll kill ye"
True. You can't threaten to kill someone, it is not covered in free speech. It's the fat isn't it.
You can find out where things are from a phone call on a cell? That's sus af.
Tips the concierge even tho u'r not really here. Love it. Rick speedreading moments. Who would write nicely like that & then spend an entire page of notebook on two lines of writing? RC: *sees a cool new app* KB: no RC: Fine but you don't get to play my angry birds! Ok that was the funny one, the only funny one. I wonder if they had pizza!
Still do! (he's literally an author)
So WHEN were u in a relationship? fate <3 (except he withheld the information abt the story he was working on for a reason, if you've seen it before like me u can see why.)
Ryan with the financials! How big are new york blocks?
Woah a nice transition! Cool!
Nice heck yeah party crasher!
Woah language but martha is right. She's totally allowed to swear in this situation. It's like the kitchen. No swears at my catholic school unless you were working an event with the culinary program & physically in the kitchen. RC: Bitch! *realizes what he said & covers mouth*
Aw cyberbullying...
RC: Where's beckett? KR: Uh, Hall of Records. Tracking down what Burns was looking for. (Pink shirt : ) & also a vest, he looks pretty) RC: Great. *hands Beckett's coffee to Ryan* (we know time that ryan & esposito stole castle & beckett's coffee & then switched after one sip that ryan like beckett flavoured coffee & espt likes castle flavoured coffee) RC: Listen, if I gave you a website, could you have your friends at Tech hack into it and take some pictures down? (bribing ryan & not his friends at tech?) KR, taking the paper from castle with a little smile: Did someone find naked pictures of you again? (HOLD ON WHAT? & HAS RICK ASKED RYAN TO DO THIS BEFORE?) KR: *unfolds paper with a lighthearted little smile at castle's antics* RC: No. Not me. It's Alexis. KR: *stops* KR: *thinking someone posted castle's daughter's nudes & now castle is asking him to take them down* KR: *looks up at him with fear in his eyes* (also bc she is 17 her pics would technically be CP & this would be a bigger issue so maybe that's what ryan was thinking. He was thinking they needed to take this to Vice or smth.) RC: This is for Alexis KR: *eyes searching* KR: Uh, this just got awkward. What's this about? (his voice suddenly got hella squeaky) RC: Okay. Mean girl at school kiss ambushed Alexis's boyfriend (ryan nods & makes faces in sympathetic outrage) then posted the photographic proof on her website. Alexis is very upset. KR: Mmm. I-- I could have my friend Tony take care of it. You know, off the record. (Love a good "tony") RC: Thanks. And, uh, no need to mention this to Beckett. You know how she gets with these things (Castle and Ryan smile & start to laugh & go to sip their coffees. Beckett appears and grabs her cup from Ryan.) KB: Things like abusing police resources for your own personal agenda? RC: Whaat? That's ridi-- No, you don-- No. That's-- that's--- (Castle gives Ryan the OK sign as he follows Beckett to her desk. Ryan slips the slip of paper into his vest meaning he's still willing to help out rick & his daughter even w/o the coffee bribery) Yes yes yes castle yes ryan this is an abuse of power but that is so valid & I think it's funny & great & I love it Ryan, trying to act casual after this little thing: Yep?
Espt has a denim-looking dress shirt on what & then beckett has a nice green scarf & longsleeve
Yo the guy's alive??
Ooh I love a good noire film but why say noowahr instead of nwar. RC: I haven't heard the story... Oh... that sucks.. he couldn't even crawl over to hold her. That's got to be traumatic.
Neat, learning abt history. Cool. So Ryan was in narcotics back in '03, he went into homicide in '06 maybe, & then three years later (I might be mixing this up with Ike Thornton's (fake) death tho) as mentioned in I think that very episode, castle shows up: '09. 03 narco, 09 castle shows up & there is a mention of "three years ago" so, 06 ike dies ryan goes into homicide. idk I'm just trying to get a timeline. Anyway, I always love it when they bring back character's pasts before we knew them. & during this Ryan is also fidgeting with his file, point for the adhd ryan headcanon.
Castle never specified HOW to flip it so he could follow the movements. Glad he said to slow it down tho. Is the man left handed?
Alexis got into a fight? Good for her. Oh no castle & ryan & tony got alexis in trouble : ( but also XD Heck yeah girl! Tho yeah rick you're right violence is not the answer "& then one of you ends up dead in a pizza oven" & then he quotes beckett & hugs her. RC: Did u kick her ass? AC: I kind of did RC: Good girl. Good. Even when he tells her retaliation is not the way, he still lets her know.
Bro teenagers ARE criminal masterminds. High school bullies are NOT some dumb-as-bricks doorknob who beats you & but can't chew gum & walk at the same time, they really can be evil geniuses.
Costumes: Castle & beckett are normal, tho I don't like beckett's shirt. Esposito is wearing a boring not-fancy long-sleeve with jeans & ryan is wearing a typical dark blue dress shirt & dress pants, no tie this time, nice grey coat. Really fancy coat too. I like it.
How can you tell someone dialed the numbers for a call but never hit send...? Unless it was already on the phone & they didn't get erased for some reason. Mine closes every time I switch apps.
Esposito, breakin down the doors! Music is great rn! The boys just run out the window
Oh so she IS in with the drug dealers.
She's good. She's really good. I'm speaking from the perspective of having seen this before. It's obvious that he CANNOT be cavallo pretending to be his own right-hand-one. Poor R+E, out of breath from the chase So she DID know those names when castle asked her the first time!
OH MY GOODNESS HOLY CRAP THAT'S A LOT OF FIGHTING & POOR RYAN IN THE MIDDLE TRYING TO GET THEM TO STOP
Castle u really just went back on what u & beckett put ur money on? Whose tab? Whose tab did they put it on? What? Winner winner pizza dinner & wow that's a lot of smack.
He's a pizza man! He would never disrespect his oven like that! It is SO not his speed castle! Oh so you wanted to burn down authentic nick's? Girl if you can call him then that's helping!
See like this is what got my eyes on ryan in the first place, his movements are so weird, like he's walking too big for his body. Oh & again unassuming middleman is dumb
Is she limping? why is she in homicide? I thought she was in narco. also I can't use my question mark button on tumblr anymore for some reason & so it reloaded the page & got rid of a mini fanfictioin I wrote & I am fucking upset. I had added some notes to my liveblog. What the hell tumblr^/ why won't you let me use a proper question mark^/ at least my french é&É still work. Ηοwever, my greek keyboard does not.
Ok sweetheart, just Don't Use Easy-to-Catch Names Calls ryan & esposito the best detectives. Ooh une femme fatale
Love the music & oh no please don't be nick's pizza Oh thank goodness it's stephano's So mature of Alexis OH THAT IS A GOOD LOOKING PIZZA
& it seems like all the bonus features are deleted scenes which I have seen. Yuck tho I don't need to see this.

Leaf on the wind wash

Leaf on the wind wash movie#
From his dinosaurs that inevitably betray him appearing on the bridge right where he left him to Zoe’s terribly soul-crushing dream to the birth of his lovely daughter Emma, Wash’s memory is alive and well on Serenity and I appreciate it very much.Īnother greatly appreciated aspect of this book is the many callbacks to the show. Sure, this isn’t how we wanted to see Wash again, but it was worth all the emotions that came with it. Just as predicted, his presence was felt throughout the book. He was my favorite character on the show, as he was a favorite of many others as well, and with a book called ‘Leaves on the Wind’, it would be hard to imagine that Wash wouldn’t pop up. One thing I was worried about though was the idea of Wash showing up. Writer Zack Whedon didn’t miss a beat in bringing his brother’s characters back to life.
Leaf on the wind wash movie#
This issue managed to touch on loose ends from the movie and the last episode of the show and it did so quite masterfully. It’s every bit as delightful, heartbreaking, funny, and intriguing as the show that we know and love. The first thing that I have to say is that this is the continuation that every ‘ Firefly’ fan has been waiting for. But the Alliance is about to send our a familiar face to bring them all in that has experience in tracking Serenity when the vessel and her crew want to lay low. Simon Tam, his sister/new pilot River Tam, mechanic Kaylee Frye, decommissioned companion Inara Serra, and pregnant first mate Zoë Washburne. After a bloody last stand that left beloved crewmembers Shepherd Derrial Book and Hoban “Wash” Washburne in graves, the crew of Serenity has dwindled even further as Jayne Cobb has opted to go home, leaving Mal with only Dr. However, Mal wants none of this at the moment and is lying as low as possible. The only thing that they both agree on is that Mal Reynolds needs to be found and held accountable for his actions, whether it be face Alliance punishment or be the face of a whole new legion of Browncoats. In fact, they’re so at odds that a new resistance has risen to oppose the Alliance. In the first issue of this brand new series, we learn that people of the verse are extremely divided on the issue of Miranda, the birthplace of the Reavers and the resting place of thirty million innocent people. Well now, thanks to Dark Horse Comics, we have a direct sequel to the adventures of Captain Malcolm Reynolds and his crew after they shared with the entire verse the news of how the Reavers were created by a failed Alliance experiment called ‘Serenity: Leaves on the Wind’. Luckily, we were lucky enough to get the major motion picture ‘Serenity’ and a few comic book tie-ins here and there, but we’ve never actually gotten a legitimate continuation of the story after the movie. Since the cancellation of ‘Firefly’ over ten years ago, fans have been clamoring for more tales from Joss Whedon’s cult classic space western.

What is Firefly about? I see you reblog a lot of posts about the show and now I'm curious
That is a wonderful question!  Technically speaking, Firefly is a Space Western written by Joss Whedon that originally aired on Fox in 2002.  It’s about a band of Chaotic Good smugglers living on the edges of the galaxy.
While there are plenty of things the show gets wrong, it is beloved because it is the definition of Found Family.  Every single character from the Captain to the preacher who hitches a ride to the ship itself is just as important as every other.  It also has so much fun flipping classic tropes on their heads.  It’s clever while understanding that the most important thing is making sure that you CARE.

Sorting “Firefly”
Malcolm Reynolds is our go-to example for the Burned Hufflepuff Primary. Look at him in the war—his faith isn’t in the righteousness or the cause, but their people: Hear that? That’s our angels coming.
Mal has a big heart, and he wants to both help and to believe in other people. (This is one of the reasons River is so vital to him—but we’ll talk about that later). Mal after the war is no different in what he wants—he’s just had to settle, injured, for a smaller world. “You’re on my crew,” he tells a bewildered Simon. (Simon’s Slytherin is absolutely flabbergasted by Mal’s stubborn loyalties to him and River, which is based in their need and their being part of the family, where Simon’s loyalties are razor-edged and individualistic). Because this is Mal—he can’t love the whole world anymore, or even just the Browncoats, because he knows that would destroy him—it already almost did. But he can love his crew. He can make Serenity a home.
His Puff shows up in other places, too, sneaking past the Slytherin model he’s used to keep himself alive and sane after the breaking of his too-big heart. He gives the medicines back in "Train Job", risking Niska’s wrath. Zoe, who first fell into step behind a Hufflepuff years ago, questions him about it in the movie—an unburned Mal, the one from the war, would never have left a man behind. This Mal shot him (a mercy) to save his crew. That prioritizing (or, rather, the instantaneous decision of it) points to his Slytherin model—but it eats Mal up the way it would never eat up Simon (“Remember, River, it’s okay to leave them to die.”). Mal wishes, deeply, quietly, that he could save everyone. But war and loss burned his young, faithful Hufflepuff into a man who thinks one of the basic truths of the universe is that you can’t save everyone and it will destroy you to try. So he’s sunk his stake into these eight Serenity-boarded souls and decided it’s enough.
This is one of the things that makes his relationship with River so interesting. The Burned Puff knows he should not be trusting and investing in this broken bird and her 'verse-wide bounty, her untrustworthy triggers and destructive lethality. But in letting them stay in the pilot, in pulling her back to the ship in "Objects in Space", in joining her crusade in "Serenity", he defies all these hard lessons he’s learned and he trusts her, he fights for her, he believes. The last moment of the Firefly filmed universe is Mal Reynolds teaching River how to fly.
For a definition of teach, anyway.
For secondary—Mal’s a Gryff. “If I shoot you,” he told Simon, “you’ll be awake, you’ll be facing me, and you’ll be armed.” Badger mocks him for it in the pilot— Mal wants the world to be honorable. He wants to be fighting the good fight, and he wants to do it in the good ways. Gryffindor Secondaries are an interesting mix of stand-up integrity and mischievous, even deceitful rule-breaking and chaos (think Fred and George). These potentially conflicting traits fall to this: Gryffindor Secondaries are self-defined. Their integrity and their honesty is a deal with themselves, not others. They stand firm to their own rules, but find other people’s or organizations’ [rules] insignificant, or even downright offensive.
The other Secondaries all can and do break rules—a Slytherin Secondary might play the system, a Hufflepuff Secondary might invest in it, a Ravenclaw might find its loopholes—but a good rule of thumb for identifying a Gryffindor Secondary is this: is rule-breaking a tool? Or is it a personality trait?
Simon, who destroyed his whole life to get to River, and was willing to let Kaylee (the epitome of the innocent bystander) bleed out in order to keep his sister safe, is a Slytherin Primary. He looks slightly Puff occasionally—this is because he’s tied part of his worth to the Puff-like doctrine of a surgeon: service and "do no harm". You see it when he saves the patient on Ariel and then chews the attending physician out, offended to his core. These are beliefs he holds close to himself, that help define him—but at Simon’s core, no matter how Ravenclaw-clever or kindly, even bumblingly Hufflepuff he can seem, he puts his people first and he loses no sleep over that.
He’s got a Ravenclaw Secondary—asked to describe his usefulness, Simon would first and foremost claim his intelligence. The Ravenclaw Secondary, which likes systems and patterns (though not necessarily the ones presented to or expected from it) might be part of why the elegant simplicity of the surgeon’s creed appeals to him.
Simon’s got a Slytherin model on top of his Slytherclaw heart, which I suspect he learned from his dad. The Ravenclaw/Slytherin combo in the Secondary/model space (in either order) often looks a little bit like a criminal mastermind (or someone who wants to be one, anyway). When Simon is uncomfortable, falling back on his model, he starts to look a bit like a plotting villain—in the pilot, on Ariel, and at the beginning of "Serenity", the movie.
Zoe is a Gryffindor Primary who really likes Hufflepuffs (see: Mal, Wash). Like Mal, she’s been burned by the war. But Puff Primary Mal has become disillusioned by a cruel 'verse that requires you to abandon some people to save others. He has lost faith in both the fairness of the universe and his own ability to make it more fair. And Zoe, a burned or “stripped” Gryff, has lost faith in her own ability to tell right from wrong. She’s not deeply burned—more a light char—but instead of trusting her own gut these days, she trusts Mal’s. Her internal moral compass feels like it’s gone awry or silent. She feels lost. This is a Stripped Gryffindor, and it’s not uncommon for a Stripped Gryffindor to try to find their morality somewhere outside themselves. Zoe finds hers in Mal.
Part of it is that she knew him in the war when he was fearless, his Puff effortless, and because it’s easy for her to fall into the structured hierarchy of their roles—sergeant or captain. She has given him not just practical but also moral authority. She questions him, but she trusts him in the end, almost always. And, though it's framed within the “sir” and the war, the reason for it lies on the quality of Mal himself. Zoe would never give her allegiance to anyone who did not deserve it. But she feels she cannot trust her own internal compass, so instead she trusts Mal’s heart.
For Secondary: Zoe does not charge, comfort, or connive. She’s straightforward because it’s useful, not because it’s a moral imperative. Ravenclaw Secondary, I think—compare [Zoe] with Mal’s Gryff Secondary in the “tin of beans” flashback in "The Message". Where Mal shouts and hollers and charges—a different school of thought—Zoe is organized, efficient, deliberate (and deadly).
The way Inara freaks out and skedaddles when she realizes how important the Serenity crew (and esp. Mal) have become to her—that is a Slytherin Primary trying so hard to “petrify”. She’s mourning Nandi and she’s mourning herself, and she just wants everything to stop hurting.
Inara looks a lot like a Puff Secondary, because she performs Hufflepuff so damn well, but she’s actually a Slytherin Secondary. In her introductory scene, on the job, we get snatches of her inner thoughts while she smiles and pours tea. She’s sighing, shifting, rolling her eyes. There’s clearly a disconnect between how she feels about this man and what she’s doing.
A Slytherpuff Inara (which, on the very surface, would look very similar to most of her behaviour) would have to convince herself to “mean” the affection for her clients, even if only for the allotted time slot. Eye-rolling, internal or external, wouldn’t happen until she was back on the ship, curled up with Kaylee, telling stories, and that’s if the eye-rolling happened at all.
Inara talks like that, though—that she chooses people she ‘connects’ with, that kind of thing. She’s got a lot of respect and wishfulness when it comes to Hufflepuff, which I think is where she bonds best with Book—he performs Puff, too, and wishes that giving warmth was closer to his core.
When Inara’s with the crew, she tends to live in her Ravenclaw model, giving off an impression of precision, clarity, and certainty. Her Ravenclaw model and Mal’s Gryffindor Secondary, both strident Idealist houses, like to have sparring matches/bonding times while their Loyalist House Primaries make doe-eyes at each other. Dweebs.
Jayne Cobb displays neither a Slytherin Primary’s strong loyalty drive, a Hufflepuff’s need-based service, or a Ravenclaw’s Constructed, systematized morality. He appears to be a Gryffindor Primary whose Felt morality is “whatever I want.” If you read him really complexly, you could maybe imagine a Ravenclaw Primary there, who’s settled on that morality of self-serving ruthlessness. But moments like the one where he joins up with Serenity—he shoots both his buddies on Mal’s suggestion—suggest against that. The betrayal doesn’t make Ravenclaw any more unlikely than Gryffindor, but the instantaneous decision to make a moral choice he’d never considered or run through his system before suggests that his is an intuitive “gut” morality—just a really unsavory one.
His selfishness looks temptingly like a Slytherin Primary, but he lacks any of the loyalty. He’ll betray anyone, and it doesn’t seem to be because he’s Petrified—he still likes and bonds with people and cares not just practically but emotionally about what they think of him (his plea to Mal not to tell the others about his betrayal in Ariel). But when push comes to shove, he doesn’t seem to care. A Gryffindor, then, just an ugly one. Sorry, Gryffindors.
His Secondary, though, we think is Slytherin. He looks a lot like a blunt Gryffindor Secondary, but it’s just his Slytherin Secondary’s Neutral State, which he likes to live in and which shares the blunt and even abrasive honesty and delighted tactlessness of some Gryffindor Secondaries. When Jayne needs to lie, deceive, connive, or betray, he does it easily and without a touch of dismay. He schemes and jockeys for advantage. He’s a good example of the uglier stereotypes of a Slytherin Secondary. Sorry, Slytherins.
Kaylee Frye is a Gryffindor Primary like Jayne and Zoe, but where Jayne’s is self-serving and Zoe’s is quietly shattered, Kaylee’s shines bright through her Hufflepuff Secondary. She community-builds like nobody’s business and even her technical prowess is described in terms of intuitive empathy.
In the episode where they pick up Simon and River, she’s sitting outside Serenity asking people why she should let them onto her ship. Why they want to be on her ship. And the only answer she accepts, Book’s, is a philosophy of wandering and traveling that sits close to her heart. It’s a Gryffindor recognizing someone who looks to share her view of the world. It’s a Gryffindor who’s bonding over shared ideas and ideals. And what does she do with this information? She brings Book aboard the ship. ‘Welcome to the family, you share our philosophies, and I think we’ll get along great.’
One of the (many) ways she does her part on Serenity is by community building with people who are good, who are worth getting to know, who are interesting. Who aren’t just picking their ship because it’s a ship that they happened to see, but because they’re able to pick up on that something special that Kaylee values so much about Serenity.
Book is a Fallen Ravenclaw with a Slytherin Secondary and a Hufflepuff performance. He’s devoted himself to the truth of the Word, of the Bible, of his religion, in a Constructed way that is certainly prioritizing truth, and that’s one of the reasons that he bonds with River (who’s also a Ravenclaw Primary), but is also a little stressed when she’s gone through his book and pointed out all the contradictions and failures of it. Look at these patterns of numbers, she says, and Book says: wait no that’s my system of truth what are you doing to it.
His willingness to bend even his Ravenclaw rules, though, like when he shoots someone in the kneecap and shrugs off the “but you’re religious!” protests of the crew. The book didn’t say anything about that specific part of the body, so it’s fine. That’s a Slytherin Secondary playing the letter of the law if I’ve ever seen one. His truth never stopped being important to him, but he doesn’t feel bad for the compromise he made, either.
The kindness he shows, the adherence to fairness and kindness, is his Ravenclaw Primary deciding that it is proper and correct to treat people with the respect of a Hufflepuff. There’s an argument for that Hufflepuff being a model, actually, because of just how important that kindness seems to be to him, but he doesn’t seem to ever have moral issues with abandoning it temporarily. That might be part of his Slytherin Secondary, but it seems more likely to me that while his Ravenclaw has decided it’s very important for him to perform Hufflepuff, he doesn’t actually understand on a felt, intrinsic level why Hufflepuff is so important. It’s not close to his heart—it’s close to his truth.
Wash is a hard Sort, because you can read or not read so many different depths to him. Is he really as utterly transparent as he seems? He looks like a Hufflepuff Primary, but maybe he’s a Ravenclaw with a loud model—because if he’s a straight up Puff, then the boy wears his heart and thoughts on his sleeve all the time.
But Zoe has a pattern—she likes Puffs—so we’re gonna go with that. Wash really is that honest and straightforward, his emotions obvious on his face. I think someone with the sort of built layers that are easy (but not necessary) to read into Wash wouldn’t be the kind [of person] Zoe would fall in love with. She likes hearts that know what they’re doing, that are instinctual in their kindnesses. Wash is himself, all the time, and that self plays with dinosaurs, loves his wife, and headbutts with Mal over ethics with the thoughtless confidence of two Puffs who disagree.
Ravenclaw Secondary—he’s quirky, delights in sarcasm and wit even when what he’s trying to be is kind. His Puff center makes his Secondary look a lot warmer than Stripped Gryffindor Zoe’s Ravenclaw Secondary, but the fact that this couple shares a Secondary makes sense.
We think River was originally a Ravenclaw/Ravenclaw with a Slytherin model and a Ravenclaw performance—basically, as a kid she modeled Simon’s Slytherclaw. She’s not Slytherin, but she finds comfort in Slytherin loyalty and she often sees the world through that lens—an emphasis on interpersonal connection, a sense of “mine first,” and loyalties owed. By the time she’s on Serenity, however, she’s been rubbed so raw she doubts her Slytherin model. (“I didn’t think you’d come for me.” “Dummy,” says Slytherclaw Simon, who never could have done anything else.) And she has almost entirely dropped the show-off Claw performance of the little girl who corrected her big brother’s spelling. As the show goes on, she grasps more and more of her Slytherin model: she gets to bring back one of her layers, regain her trust in Simon’s Slytherin, rebuild her model of a world in which one universal truth is that her brother will always come for her.
But River’s drives and connection to the world are understanding it. She wants to know what’s going on, both in the observant, academic sense of the Ravenclaw Secondary and the more abstract Ravenclaw Primary—she’s looking for purpose, shoulds and shouldn’ts, for identity. A Slytherin Primary in her situation might have attached themselves to Simon like a baby sloth. A young Gryffindor might be reactive, responding with their gut, or perhaps cynical and shattered after their selves had been so invaded. In rebuilding, a Gryffindor would be looking for something inside themselves, a sense of solidity, a sense of purpose—River is looking outside. A Hufflepuff Primary might have clearer eyes for the people of the ship; but River views them with a detached interest. There is genuine affection there, but when it comes to River feeling steady in the world, she’s almost more interested in the engines than the crew—not their mechanics, but the beat of them. She’s a romantic sort of Ravenclaw Primary, sure, but she’s got a need for systems to build and inhabit. Her sense of reality has been shattered and the first thing that gives her some peace and stability is this: not safety, certainty, or community, but a sense of knowing what is going on.
River’s trying to figure out how this all works, and the heart of this show (because River more than any of them lives in the meta text) is Serenity.
River’s trying to find a base from which she can build. Her world, her models, and her ability to perceive and believe reality have been shattered. Mal pulls her back to the ship at the end of the last episode—it’s a homecoming, yes, but perhaps more than that he’s giving her a place to stand. That episode is easily Firefly’s most existential/meta, and it’s fitting that we start it with River detached from reality—ocean wave audio, mistaking a gun for a fallen branch, pushed to untrusted outskirts—and that we end it with River landing firmly, feet first, on Serenity, beaming through her suit visor.
