a/n | honestly i'm kind of debating turning this into a miniseries because i really like this concept and kind of want to see where i could take it but let me know what y'all think!! i wrote this in the middle of the night with zero editing so if you see any mistakes no you don't. i urge you to not buy any of the last of us games, including the remaster as the creator, neil druckmann is a zionist. the second game is based off of the israeli occupation in palestine and you can learn more about that here.
You and Ellie had a very messy breakup, one she couldn’t get over. So she started bullying you. It started your freshman year of college, only two weeks after the breakup. Ellie had gone up to you in the locker room at the school's gym. She looked at you with an angry glare, “Move, you’re in my way.” She glares at you with her arms crossed, she had never looked at you like that before.
“Just go around, you can literally climb over the bench. I don’t wanna talk to you,” you say, the breakup still fresh for you.
Ellie shoves you back lightly, not breaking her glare, “No. You’re gonna move.” This exchange had garnered them a crowd, a lot of the girls in the room glancing over at the pair. Ellie is stubborn but so are you.
“Who the fuck do you think you are? This isn’t you, Ellie!” You exclaim, not even caring if you’re causing a scene. You’ve never seen this side of her and it upsets you. You’re not even expecting it when she grabs you by your shoulders and spins you around, quickly pushing you face first against the cold metal lockers. She grabs the waistband of your gym shorts and pulls it away from your body, giving her access to your underwear. She wraps her fingers around your waistband and you beg as soon as you feel her cold fingers brush against your skin.
“Ellie, whatever you’re about to do, don't do it, please! I-I’m sorry! I should’ve moved!” You plead with her to literally save your own ass. It doesn’t work. She grips the waistband, pressing her arm hard against your back to keep you in place.
“You should’ve listened to me when I told you to fucking move,” Ellie borderline snarls before pulling hard on your waistband, the cotton fabric of your panties forcing its way up and between your cheeks. You yelp in pain and instinctively try to run, causing Ellie to pull even harder, forcing you onto your toes in seconds. You try every trick in the book to escape the pain but it’s no use, she has you right where she wants you and you’re not going anywhere.
She pulls and pulls at your panties, hiking them up to your shoulders before letting go of your waistband, laughing when you whine as it snaps back against you. She continues to hold your body against the locker, pressing herself against you and gripping your hair painfully. “You better listen to me next time I tell you to do something you fucking loser,” she threatens before letting you go and shoving past you to get to her locker. You look around the locker room with embarrassment, looking down at the ground and trying to hide your face with your hair as you grab the rest of your things from your locker before running out of the locker room and back to your dorm.
You encounter her again a week later, you’re out in the quad talking with a girl from one of your classes, her name is Layla. You’re both sitting on a blanket she brought, talking about an assignment, cracking jokes here and there. You’re having a great time, smiling bigger than you had in a while, cheeks flushed when she compliments you. It’s bliss until Ellie comes along. She’s walking back to her dorm after an annoyingly long lecture, she’s got an overpriced iced coffee in her hand that she bought from the campus coffee shop and a pissed off look on her face.
She’s speed walking, wanting to get away from everyone and everything when she spots you and Layla. You’re leaning in and giggling, smiling like you did when you were with Ellie. It makes her heart ache and before she even realizes it she’s walking over to the both of you. Her mouth feels dry as she’s standing in front of you two. She looks down and feels nauseous as you both look up at her.
“Uh, can I help you?” You ask coldly, glaring up at her. She looks nervous, and it’s slightly amusing to you to see her like this. Your date grabs your hand reassuringly, aware of the incident that had happened a few weeks ago.
“What are you doing?” Ellie asks, her mouth moving quicker than her brain. She mentally facepalms after realizing what she’s said. It’s obvious what you’re doing and Ellie fucking hates it.
“We’re just…hanging out. Why do you care?” You respond, looking away from her, focusing your eyes on a bird flying around in the distance.
Ellie shuffles her feet and racks her brain, trying to come up with a response. “I-I-” She cuts herself off, still trying to find the words.
“Can you just leave us alone, we’re just trying to hang out and enjoy some fresh air. We’re not bothering anyone, okay?” Layla says, speaking up for the both of you. This angers Ellie even more, she doesn’t want to hear a word Layla has to say. She’s seeing red, jealous when she knows she has no right to be. She wants to act logically but she can’t, she acts purely on emotion as she tosses her coffee at Layla. It sends you both gasping in surprise scooting back, but not near quick enough to avoid the splash. You groan as you realize your white shirt has been covered in Ellies drink. Ellie is just as shocked by her actions as you are, she’s quick to run off, wanting to get back to her dorm as quickly as possible.
You and Layla scramble to figure out what to do, using the blanket to dry yourselves. All you do is make the stains on your shirt and light wash jeans even worse and you hang your head in embarrassment as she walks you back to your dorm. You let her borrow some clothes and your shower stuff as she goes and gets herself cleaned up, you can’t lie she looks pretty good in your clothes even if it is just a black t-shirt and some sweatpants. You have your turn to shower and change and when you finish up you go back into your room to talk to Layla.
“I’m so sorry about that, I had no idea she was gonna do that. She hasn’t been herself since we broke up, she’s all mean now, it’s weird…” You apologize, sitting down on your twin bed next to her, brushing through your wet hair.
Layla looks at you and smiles reassuringly, “It’s not your fault. You’re not responsible for her now, if she can’t get over it she should talk to you instead of acting like such a dick. It’s not like you knew she’d do something so ridiculous.” You lay your head on her shoulder and look down at your lap.
“I just feel bad you got caught up in this shit, she shouldn’t be messing with anyone else. I mean, she’s mad at me, there’s no reason for you to get caught in the middle of it,” you sigh. Layla once again grabs your hand, rubbing circles into your skin with her thumb.
“She’s mad at me too for taking you out on a cute little picnic,” she chuckles, resting her head against yours. You feel comfortable and happy with her, but there’s a part of you that feels like something is missing. You push down the feeling, it’s not something you feel like addressing in the middle of such a sweet moment. You push back your memories of Ellie and let yourself smile as you and Layla cuddle up together. She stays over for an hour, cuddling with you and talking about class and getting to know each other better, you’re grateful she doesn’t bring up Ellie again. When she leaves she promises to return your clothes when she sees you again, you couldn’t care less if she did, she looks better in them, anyway.
Tumblr media
Ellie is freaking the fuck out when she gets back to her dorm room, completely out of breath as she had run the entire way there. She’s thankful Dina isn’t there as she collapses onto her bed hyperventilating. She hasn’t always been great at impulse control, everyone who’s known her has known this. But she didn’t think it was bad enough for something like that to happen. She knows she’s going about everything wrong, there’s no way she’s getting you back acting like that, but she doesn’t know how to get her shit together.
“I’m so fucking stupid oh my goddd,” Ellie groans, grabbing her pillow and screaming into it in frustration. She’s embarrassed and angry and still feels pangs of jealousy as she thinks about you and Layla giggling together in the grass. Ellie had never taken you on a picnic, when you dated it was mostly arcade and movie dates, she hadn’t even thought you’d want to do something outdoors. She overthinks it, convincing herself you broke up with her because she never took you on a nature date. It’s a stupid, irrational thought, and Ellie knows that, but she doesn’t care. She needs to let herself spiral before she can pick herself back up and make a plan that doesn’t make you look at her like she’s a complete jackass.
“I need to apologize, tell her I’m sorry for the wedgie and the coffee and fucking up her date…her date with that girl who doesn’t deserve her but whatever…” Ellie mumbles to herself, pulling at her hair stressfully. She thinks back to the wedgie incident, she completely humiliated you and it got her wet. Your pathetic little noises, how you were at her mercy like that, it just did it for her. She scrunches up her nose, trying to convince herself to stop thinking about it like that but it doesn’t take long for her to soak her panties once again.
“If I take care of it, I’ll stop thinking about it,” she mutters as she tries to convince herself it’s okay to get off to the memory. She slips off her jeans and slips her hand under her panties, starting off by flicking her clit, whining pathetically at the sensation. She slips two of her fingers inside her soaked cunt, pumping them in and out slowly as she uses her thumb to stimulate her clit. She continues working her fingers in and out of her cunt as she bites her lip to keep her noises to a minimum. All she can think about is how pathetic you sounded as you took your wedgie, she replays the noises in her head, loving how you sounded. You never sounded like that when you had slept together, that was a side of you she didn’t get to see until she had your waistband in her hand. It doesn’t take her long to cum, whimpering out your name as she reaches her climax. She lazily works her way through her orgasm, wishing it was your fingers instead. She feels guilty afterwards, mumbling to herself that she’s not doing that again.
She forces herself to get out of bed and into the cramped bathroom she shares with Dina so that she can wash off her shame. Little does she know that you’re in your dorm room doing the same, pumping your fingers in and out of your cunt shamefully as you use your other hand to pull your panties like Ellie had. The feeling of powerlessness, pain, and humiliation had all combined into pleasure in your brain. You halfway moan Ellie’s name when you cum, cutting yourself off when you realize what name is leaving your lips. “I’m never doing that again,” you promise yourself as the shame bubbles up inside of you. For once you’re grateful for your roommate to come bursting in the door, you let her nonsensical rant about whatever show she was watching distract you from the lingering thoughts of Ellie’s hands on your waistband.

Three sandwiches in a row. Three lunches gobbled in a meeting. Three breaks skipped to pace the length of an oak conference table. But going up against NCB required more than a will to find a way, so Y/N took another bite of pastrami on wheat and settled on the windowsill.
Popular wisdom held that harassment was a worry solely for women. That they were never, ever perpetrators. Having come of age before she could get a loan on her own, experienced an era in which an employer had sought her ex-husband's permission to hire her, it'd been a hiccup for Y/N to get past that assumption.
But power had a way of begetting bad behavior, which in turn begat ever more power. And when Aaron Williams had stumbled into her office, embarrassment trembling his squared off fingers, she'd believed him.
Lana Miller, Gotham's Golden Girl, charmed the city on the six o'clock news. Bringing You the Truth! as the slogan went. Bleached teeth smile, gleaming grey gaze, a confident cadence that demanded trust.
She'd set her eyes on Mr. Williams a month after he'd signed his contract. Blocking his way as he'd try to exit the production control room, suggestive comments that'd escalated to the outright lewd. An offer to put in a good word with management if he'd visit after a broadcast. ("I hold a lot of sway with the boys upstairs.")
When a meeting had devolved into her nude on his desk, that grey gaze had turned steely. He'd kicked her out and filed a complaint.
A cardboard box shoved at his chest, an order to leave the premises by noon. That a handful of others had reported bullying hadn't mattered to The Top. Ratings were too high, too critical to hassle the on-air talent. A behind the scenes guy was expendable, a money saver even. Big deal if he blabbed about it over beer with buddies. That kind of tale had been blabbed before. Bye, bye trouble, hello to the next desperado trying to break into showbiz.
Wage theft, safety violations, employee misclassifications. Those were matters Dube, Ellis, & Flat handled on a regular basis. Filing a motion in court often got the Mom and Pops to behave. Publicized cases, though? Speculation aired on tabloid television? The firm wasn't used to that.
Williams v. National Center for Broadcasting had spent the past year collecting dust in the corner filing cabinet, waiting for its turn on the docket. NCB had stalled every way it could. Frivolous Motions to Dismiss, fillings for discovery every month as if a past due bill. A flurry of due process that felt like old money showing off. Then, low and behold, another case settled, and their matter was set for a two-week trial.
The delay had allowed Y/N plenty of investigation hours. He saids, She saids were hard to prove, and anything she could find to put a dent in the network's excuses was worth the effort.
She'd snuck into NCB studios as part of a tour group, just to refamiliarize herself with the place. When a copy editor discovered her in the stairwell, pretending to be a new employee had been the easiest solution. ("Oh, you must be Brenda's replacement! Personnel is one floor up.")
Mrs. Cunningham was a barrel of woman, a cigarette held perpetually in her left hand. Y/N asked about Spencer Fox, a counterfeit sounding name that kept appearing in NCB's filings. "He's an old friend," she'd claimed. "I wouldn't mind getting back in touch."
The older woman shook her head. "He moved to California nine months ago, pilots and renewals. Damned if I know when he'll be back."
At that dismissive declaration, Y/N had to shove her hands under her thighs to hide her excitement. Fox had sent in an affidavit, stating he'd witnessed no harassment during the period in question. Now she could testify that was meaningless. Mistreatment is easy to miss from three thousand miles away.
Turning to sift through manila folders, Mrs. Cunningham tapped ash into a pink ashtray, florals printed in the glass. "What did you say your name was? Treble? Your paperwork isn't here." She'd offered a pained expression. "You look more fun than Brenda. God, I hope you are. She had bitch stitched in her seams."
Y/N wished circumstances would have allowed her to get to know this woman better. As a thank you for her trouble, she'd sprung for two vending machine coffees, shaken her hand, and slipped through the nearest emergency exit.
"I'm not even that good looking," Mr. Williams said, fingers trembling again. He flexed his knuckles, left knee bouncing like a snare drum. Mannerisms that held a touch of Arthur. "I don't know why she picked me."
Placing her sandwich on a napkin, she took a coffee carafe from the center of the table to refill his cup. "Her actions have nothing to do with you and everything to do with a lack of consequences. But we're going to change that, aren't we?"
The corner of his mouth twitched. "I guess so."
"Good. Now let's review court etiquette and your testimony again."
She covered the basics. Stand when the judge enters and leaves, always address him as Your Honor, don't chew gum during the proceeding. When on the stand, pause before answering. Make sure you understand the question being asked. Be clear and concise.
"Don't guess, either," she continued. "It's fine not to recall everything, even expected. Remember you're under oath. An 'I don't know' is better than speculation." She'd seen too many people twist themselves into Slinkys trying to say the right thing, to justify themselves. "And don't volunteer information. If you get nervous, focus on our team. We're here for you." She popped the last bit of crust between her lips, wiped her fingers, and grabbed her binder.
The lines between her brows deepened. Fingers paged through the documents faster and faster. She regarded Mr. Williams over the top of the binder. "Let's take five minutes." Then she rose and jogged to her office. The file had to be there...
Just as she strode in, her phone rang. One hand sorting already sorted stacks, she set it to speaker. "Dube, Ellis, & Flat, this is Y/N."
"Hey, it's Arthur." Her heart leapt. She grabbed the receiver to listen closer. "I was wondering if we could meet for lunch? I'm kinda in the mood for a Reuben. They're on special today." Patricia had gotten him hooked on the combo of sauerkraut and corned beef.
Y/N's heart sank back to her ribs, a pang starting below her left breast. A glance through half-glass walls. Her colleagues were gathering materials for this afternoon's meeting with expert witnesses. She'd be expected post-haste.
"I'd love to but we're so busy here," she said. Then added, a tad defensively, "You've seen the news coverage."
"Oh." The solitary syllable came out low and slow.
She closed her eyes. She hated disappointing him. As of late, she'd found herself doing so too often. "I promise to be home on time tonight. I'll make it up to you-"
"There's nothing to make up."
"-when all this bullshit is over. Tell you what. I'll save you my coleslaw."
"No, you need to eat."
"Y/N!" Her name bellowed across the room like an air horn. Not scolding but sure to get her attention.
A pause. "You better go," Arthur said.
She raised her hand in a One Minute gesture. She wasn't about to cut this goodbye short. "Thank you for understanding. I don't take it for granted."
"Yeah. See you tonight."
"You will," she affirmed. "You will."
~~~~~
The cordless handset clicked in the cradle. A lean hip hutted against the counter, a cutting line against bone. Arthur pressed his head to the light blue cabinet door. He drew in one long breath.
He'd meant what he'd said. There was nothing to apologize for, there was nothing to forgive. He'd read the headlines, heard the lowlights on GCR, skimmed editorials in the paper. NCB was continuing its age-old tradition of shitting on the little guy.
And he knew what was at stake for Y/N. Challenging those who abused their advantage was important to her, had been since they'd met. Christ, it was how they'd met. He couldn't be prouder of her for believing in something, for having convictions strong enough to take it on. Yet, tendrils of dissatisfaction spread across his chest, a vise he couldn't loosen no matter how much he longed to. An annoyance as much as it was truth.
She'd helped him. Plenty. Taking messages from clients, ensuring his gigs were on the kitchen calendar so they could plan around them. On evenings he was home late, dinner was ready and on the table. She rubbed his lower back if it ached, massaged the stubborn knots that tended to swell by his misshapen shoulder. (He was over forty now; his body liked to remind him.) She listened when needed, left him alone when requested.
A couple Tuesdays ago, he'd dropped in his chair, palms flat on his desk. A sinking slowness had snuck into his schedule, leaving him bereft, feeling unwanted. As if he should do more but with no clear vision of what. He'd worried the seam of his legal pad, curled torn strips of yellow paper with his thumb. "I don't know how much longer I can do this."
Clad in mauve tunic and black leggings, Y/N had knelt beside him. Offered a tender look with love as its foundation, gentle debate twinkling her pupils. "Do it until it stops making you happy," she'd said, ruffling his oily hair. He'd leaned into that touch like she was water and his ruminations flames to be doused. "But even then," she'd continued. "Don't quit. Think of it as taking a break. That way you can make sure you want to live without it."
He'd taken her advice, kept his calendar clear. A choice rather than circumstance. So far, it'd been a good decision, one that allowed him to write more jokes, make more observations, work on his timing, work on himself. Already, the itch to return to Carnival had started in his inner wrist, traversed his lanky arm. Led to an impromptu dance in the living room, when he hadn't moved to a beat in days.
She was a resilient woman, wore an exterior as tough as bull hide. But he saw through all that. Deepened wrinkles framed her mouth, flattened cheeks, eyelids that drooped well before bedtime.
Y/N had restarted his pulse. There had to be a way for him to do the same.
Heaving a sigh, he tapped a Stutton into his palm. Grabbed his lighter from the counter and headed for the fire escape.
Just as he was about to light up (a few seconds too early, he'd crack the window, she'd never know), a folder on the coffee table forced a doubletake. Egg timer set, limiting herself to half an hour, she'd worked on a binder last night. He'd brought her a coffee, kissed the top of her head, skimmed the top notes in her loopy script.
Arthur's lips pinched. From the beginning of their courtship, she'd stressed that she'd tell him what she could, but privacy laws and her own code of ethics prevented her from sharing a whole hell of a lot. But this was their coffee table in their living room in their apartment. Obviously, the folder had been forgotten. If he were to steal a peek, who would know? Maybe it held the key to giving her a hand.
That convenient line of thought drove him to pluck it from the table and flip it open.
Green bar printer sheets, two columns of questions in dot matrix font. LIKELY and HYPOTHETICALS in all caps. Squinting, he held the pages a foot away. How many incidents were there? Did you report them to anyone? Can you describe your relationship with...
A sudden image came to him, a spark of awareness. A flight of fancy imparted in a hospital garden, sitting side by side on a concrete bench. Cool breeze on raw, goosepimpled skin. Whiffs of strawberries and musk.
Yes. Yes, that would work!
He raced to the bedroom closet, nearly stumbling in his haste. A suitable shirt, striped tie, brown trousers, freshly polished Oxfords. Only a couple more props were necessary. A bit of research at the video store, the jotting of his own questions.
From interviews on the highest rated shows to dating the prettiest girl in the world, fantasy was one of Arthur's longstanding habits. Although the weaves of his dreams had changed - less dire, more aspire - his mind still titled towards the land of make believe. He had no doubt he could pull this off.
Eager as a gumshoe, he patted his wallet, tossed on his jacket, and flew out the door.
~~~~~
Though the temperature hovered around fifty, patches of sweat darkened the armpits of Y/N's bow tie blouse. The breakneck pace of the day had overheated her, ponderings of all tomorrow would bring. And where the hell that file could have disappeared to.
Due to electrical work, she had to exit the subway at Ditmas Avenue. Five stops early. She skipped the offered buses to walk the rest of the way to 4A. That always helped her sort her thoughts, decompress. Put her mind in Pay Attention to Home mode rather than lingering on a missed comma in an affidavit.
Besides, she adored her adopted hometown, the aura of the city, the souls of its people. The street musician blasting a trumpet on the corner, the homeless woman wrapped in a blanket who asked for the time, the guy in a beanie selling bootleg VHS tapes, laid out on a ragged blanket. Y/N loved them all. And, if she was lucky, walks led to unexpected joys. Like the stroll from Burnley that'd led to a certain greasy donut shop in Otisburg.
A sort of silliness accompanied her, the kind only fatigue can bring. Silly as best experienced with Arthur. She'd stopped at Ed's Grocery for a surprise dinner of breaded pollack fillets with white rice and ketchup - a take on a fish stick dish he'd often made as a teenager - and a lone flower, the apology he'd said wasn't needed.
Coat hung on its hook, kitten heels kicked off, court bag dropped to the floor, she moved to put the fish in the fridge. Brown Eyed Susan in hand, she aimed for the living room to find her husband, seize the kiss she'd craved since his call.
She stood stockstill in the entrance. Fingers curled about the stem. Her lips gaped.
Buttressed on the wall to her right, under the windows, sat the television and coffee table. To her left, the cream couch was now six inches in front of their console stereo in a parallel line. A yard from the bedroom door stood a lone dining chair, the remaining three had been arranged in random spots about the room. A sort of imitation of an audience. Or a gallery...
Was this what she thought it was?
Pulling at his belt loops, Arthur entered from the bathroom. With the sheer will of a gallon of hair gel, deep mocha locks had been forced into a side part. He wore a violet and gold striped tie, fixed neatly at his neck in a half Windsor knot. The pale yellow button-up was a shirt he donned far too rarely, his medium brown trousers the perfect fit for his narrow waist. Black suspenders gave him a look more 1940s than modern. A classic, classy man. It was a style that worked, one she loved on him and only him.
He nodded at her, mischief curving his lips. "I'd like to call Y/N Fleck to the stand?"
"Arthur..." Chuckling, she shook her head, crossing the carpet. She reached to embrace him, petals brushing his bicep. "What in the world?"
He caught her hands. His were warm and firm on her skin. "I wanna help. I rented 'Adam's Rib.'"
"Isn't that about a murder trial?"
"Yeah, the husband and wife are lawyers. Anyway, I think I got the hang of it. I know you sometimes get nervous when you testify. I thought it'd be good to practice, like what I do for my shows."
Wetness stung the corners of her eyes. She blinked it away in haste. That he'd recall the fantasy she'd shared at Arkham, a goofy trifle she'd disclosed during his toughest of times, moved her deeply. He was a wave upon the sand of her soul.
Clearing her throat, she slipped the flower in his breast pocket and patted it twice. He angled his head to admire it, gave her hand another squeeze. "I better hurry before the court holds me in contempt," she said, and passed him to sit on the setoff dining chair, the presumed witness stand.
A piece of paper emerged from his sleeve, a magician's move. He unfurled it with a flick of the wrist. Her brows shot up and held. "Where did you find that?" she asked, incredulous. She'd recognize that dusty printer paper anywhere, the list she'd spent a better part of the afternoon scouring for.
"The coffee table." He plucked a pair of reading glasses from his trouser pocket. Espresso browline, rounded wire bottoms, a pair that looked as if it'd been selected from the display stand at Groves. When he put them on, the temple tip momentarily caught in his hair.
She felt her insides melt. It was a glimpse of the future she longed for.
His gaze rose from the paper. "Raise your hand."
"Which one?" As innocent as an intern on her first day.
"Uh, the right," he said, indicating with his chin. He straightened his posture, feet squared with his shoulders. "Do you swear to tell the truth?"
"I swear to tell you anything."
A laugh caught behind his teeth, green eyes sparkling. "What's your name?"
"Y/N Fleck." She spelled it for good measure. A third of court transcribers left off the h.
"And what's your job? Have you had it for long?"
"I'm a senior paralegal at Dube, Ellis, & Flat. I've held that position for just under a year. I started there as a paralegal in 1982 - before the Flat. Prior to that, I worked in firms both in Gotham and Missouri."
"I see. Do you think you're a good boss, Ms. Fleck?"
"Misses, actually." At the correction, pleased pink stained his cheekbones. She crossed her legs at the knee. "And I'm no one's boss, but I am good at what I do."
"What did your client say happened?"
"I'm afraid I'll have to object to that question." She tapped her chin in mock suspicion. "It's dangerously close to hearsay."
"What does that mean?"
"That you'll have to ask the complainant directly, not me."
"Okay, well..." Eyes narrowing, he pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose. "How did you prepare for trial?"
Flirty and fun was what she wanted to be, but reciting it all, even the compact version she offered, exhausted her all over again. "I reviewed the filings submitted by both parties. I assisted in preparing the complainant and expert witnesses to testify. I snuck into NCB Studios - an old habit I developed awhile back. And I put on many, many pots of coffee."
"That sounds like a lot. Gotham is lucky to have you." A tender look that said and so am I.
"It has been. A little too much." She let out a weary sigh, everything at risk an abrupt weight on her shoulders. All she'd wanted tonight was escape and laughter and him, but now... She folded her hands together in her lap to maintain her composure.
Lowering the list, he ventured a step closer. Earnestness softened the lines of his face. His head dipped down and towards her. "How are you feeling about next week?"
Suddenly, she was the case he'd decided to investigate. She shifted in her seat. "That depends. Are you retained by the plaintiff or the defendant?"
"I'm on your side," he said, kind as a pat on the back.
Fresh perspiration stained her blouse. Five seconds of pondering before she dropped the brave face. "A little scared, to be honest. I'm glad the judge decided to keep the proceedings private - we don't need a circus in there - but I'm still going to angle for the back door. NCB has so much money, and so much of the public is behind Lana Miller. I just want our client to get what he deserves. And for NCB to pay for protecting the wrong people.” She smoothed the pleats of her skirt, bottom lip planted firmly between teeth. “I've worked hard on this. We all have. I need it to be worth it."
"It will be." He knelt on one knee before her, his breath warm on her chin. He plucked the flower from his pocket, took her fidgeting fingers, and placed the bloom in her palm. "Is there anything else you wanna tell the court?"
A gulp cleared the breath locked in her throat. "Just two items. You're an ace lawyer, Attorney Fleck. If you're ever looking, you should apply to my firm."
"And what's the other?"
On a grin, Y/N cupped his cheeks. "You forgot to ask if you could approach the witness." Then she kissed him. "I love you."
He caught her by the collar. "Kiss me again."
She did. Sweet but sure, the testimony of her whole heart. Her forehead bumped his glasses, his nose collided with hers. When they broke apart for air, she stood and took his hand. "I'd like to submit a Motion to Dismiss. It's time for us."
Arthur's thumb traced hers, his feet already guiding them to the kitchen. "No objection, Mrs. Fleck."

Peter Benjamin Parker-Stark: Tony Stark’s oldest adopted son. Adopted at age five when his aunt and uncle were killed over the research that gave him his Spider abilities in the same fashion as his mother and father.. Serves as the hero Spider-Man and Iron Spider.
Harlen Tyler “Harley” Keener-Stark: Tony Stark’s second adopted son. Adopted at age 10 when his mother passed away. Has an arc reactor for a heart after unable to find a heart downer when told his Cardiomyopathy would kill him Serves part time as Successor, becoming the successor to the War Machine and Iron Man tittle (though the public still calls him Iron Lad).
Riri Williams: The successor to the Iron Man mantle along with Harley known as Iron Heart. Tony loves her as though she were his own daughter, making her Peter and Harley’s surrogate sister.
Cassandra Eleanor "Cassie" Lang: Daughter of Scott Lang, Ant Man. Her step mother is Hope Van-Dyne, The Wasp and daughter of the original Ant Man and Wasp. She is secretly operating as the hero Stature with the help of Tony Stark, her godfather and uncle. She has Congenital heart disease that was mysteriously cured for a reason her parents are not aware of.
Shuri: Princess of Wakanda and the second Black Panther, also known as Aja-Adanna. Works with Tony very often in the labs, and has developed a close friendship with Riri, Peter and Harley.
Ned Leeds: Peter, Harry And Gwen S’s best friend since diapers. Got a Stark Internship at the end of sophomore year and started dating Betty Brant.
Yukio: accidentally stumbled into her Stark Internship and a relationship with Wade’s friend Ellie. Became good friends with everyone else who lives/works in SI.
Nathaniel Richards: The part time Iron Lad and foster son of Reed Richards.
Elizabeth “Betty” Brant: Ned’s girlfriend and one of Harley’s best friends. The drummer in MJ’s band and one of the only people (along with Ned, Flash and Yukio) who knows about everyone at SI’s secret identities.
Michell Jones: Peter and Ned’s other friend, though she’s closer with Harley who has the same kind of sarcasm as her. Black Lives Matter, Feminist and LGBT Rights. Has a band called The Mary Janes where she is lead singer, Betty is on drums, and Gwen S is the guitarist.
Harry Osborn: Almost a bigger feminist than Michell. The son of Norman Osborn and future owner of Oscorp. Peter, Ned, Gwen S and Harley’s childhood friend.
Gwendolyn “Gwen” Maxine Stacy: Harry’s best friend, as well as Peter and Ned’s. Daughter of the Captain of the NYPD and trained Jr Officer. Secretly the masked vigilante Ghost Spider who is deeply hated by the public and her father.

Wade Wilson-Howlett: resident pansexual and one man pride parade. Attends the same STEM school as everyone else, despite being no where near qualified. Adopted son of a history teacher at the school in Westchester that he got kicked out of. Had cancer growing up to the point that doctors said he wouldn’t live to see 16 (he proved them wrong).
Gwendolyn "Gwen" Poole: Seemingly normal girl who works at a McDonald’s in Brooklyn and is the best friend is Miles Morales. At first they believe that Gwen is simply Miles’s best friend and madly in love with Gwen Stacy, but when caught in crossfire they realize she has the regenerative mutant gene just like the Howletts. After her parents and brother are supposedly killed by Ghost Spider, she is fostered by Logan.
Liz Allan: Daughter of The Vulture, a villain Peter fought in freshman year. Really popular and smart. One Harley’s best friend’s (along with Flash, Betty and MJ).
Edward Charles Allan “Eddie” Brock: President of the journalism club at the school with Peter as vice prez. A really sweet guy, but a bisexual disaster at the same time. He got cancer in freshman year, but it disappeared entirely right after Peter met the latest villain Venom...
Miles Morales: A boy in Laura’s class who she later discovers to be the kid Peter is mentoring. He is slated to take over the Spider-Man title. He is currently known as Arachnid or Kid Archnid. Due to his father being the captain of the Brooklyn Police Force he grew up knowing George and Gwen Stacy. He went to the police academy early with Gwen S, and is the only one who knows that she is the Ghost Spider.
Anne Weying: Eddie’s ex and his best friend. Really smart, but doesn’t know how to keep out of bad situations. Almost as popular as Liz, and after her leaving the school, took her place in the power vacuum.
Dan Lewis: Anne’s boyfriend who attends the school with everyone so that he can take as many medical field classses as he can. Wants to become a doctor, but is willing to put his hard work on hold to help a friend in need.
Laura Howlett: Wade’s sister who also attends the STEM school. Has the same sarcasm and pride as her father and brother. Very little patience and is mostly mute due to the pain she feels when she speaks. When she does speak, it is usually in Spanish.
T’Challa: Tired king doing his best to take care of his sister in America when he can. Is engaged to Ororo Munroe, though no one besides he and Shuri know.
Ellie Phimister: Yukio’s girlfriend and Wade’s friend from his old school.
Viv Vision: The Vision’s daughter. She gets back from her tour of the world and decides to start working at SI.

Tumblr media
Kelsey Noelle Woods (nee Williams) was born on February 24th, 1994 in Gold Coast, Australia. She has never had much information about either one of her biological parents aside from the fact that her mother was a teenager. Kelsey was abandoned on the steps of a fire department a mere few days after her birth. It was a gut wrenching decision for her mother. As much as she adored the little girl, she knew that she wasn’t equipped to provide for all of the child’s needs. Kelsey never really harbored any animosity towards her mother for this but it did cause her to grow up with a deep-rooted insecurity and fear of not being enough.
After her surrender, Kelsey grew up in the foster care system in Australia. Kelsey hated every minute of it. Although some foster parents genuinely did have their hearts in the right place, most of the homes were overcrowded and the parents stretched too thin while also being weary of getting overly attached to the foster children. At worst, the homes were abusive. Kelsey always felt on edge and had an anxiety disorder from a young age. She had a hard time making friends with the other kids due to her never staying in one place for long. The little girl would go to bed and dream of finding a family of her own.
At the age of 7, Kelsey’s dreams came true and she was adopted by the Woods family. The move from Australia to Crownsville was rough for Kelsey. Even after the adoption was finalized, Kelsey was terrified that the smallest mistake would make her dads realize that they had made a huge mistake and send Kelsey back into the foster system. It wasn’t until she bonded with her adopted brother, Connor, that Kelsey started to realize that her new family wasn’t going anywhere. They actually wanted her around --- the first time in Kelsey’s life that someone had wanted her.
She was diagnosed hard of hearing shortly after she moved in with the Woods’. After a couple of surgeries as a child, her hearing was partially restored in her right ear. However, out of her left ear she can’t hear anything. Eventually, Kelsey will lose her hearing all together. She can speak aloud but prefers to use ASL and can hold her own with reading lips. Kelsey never really felt like this held her back in life. It was all that she had ever known. Her dads insisted that, since her other senses became stronger, Kelsey was the superhero of the family. This started a life-long obsession with superheroes. Figuring that it would help their daughter, Kelsey got her first service dog when she was eight. Her first service dog was named Jarvis (after Iron Man which is her favorite movie). The dog was trained not only to alert Kelsey to sounds but also to help with her anxiety.
School was a mixed bag for Kelsey. She was a naturally bright and gifted student, always at the top of her class academically and never daring to misbehave. She never wanted to draw unnecessary attention to herself. However, Kelsey was severely bullied by the other kids. She was bullied for everything from being adopted, to her thick Australian accent, to her disability, and finally for being gay after she came out in high school. She spent most of her time with the teachers. Her teachers always adored Kelsey and, ever since, Kelsey knew that one day she wanted to be a teacher so that she could help kids too.
Kelsey also fell in love with art at a young age. Although Kelsey is modest about her talent, anyone can see that she is a remarkable painter. She paints everything from completely abstract, to scenery, to almost scarily accurate portraits of people. When she got to college, Kelsey decided to combine her two interests and study to become an art teacher. She originally intended on staying in Georgia for college. However, after a lot of thought, Kelsey decided to take a leap of faith and go out of state for college. She accepted a full ride art scholarship at the University of Colorado. Since then, Kelsey never looked back.
Kelsey moved back home to Crownsville after finishing her undergraduate degree. She missed being around her family so she got her teaching certificate in Atlanta. With her latest service dog, Gamora, by her side, Kelsey is in her first year of teaching art at the high school. It’s funny to her to be back walking the same halls not long after she graduated and even funnier to be working alongside her former teachers. As well as teaching art, Kelsey also runs the high school’s Gay-Straight Alliance. She is eager to prove herself and make her classroom a safe space for her students. She suspects her students are more interested in Gamora than anything else --- but hey, whatever works, right?
Kelsey is the ultimate sweetheart and would never dare to speak ill of anyone. Even though she’s had her fair share of heartbreak, Kelsey chooses to look on the bright side. She believes there’s beauty in the world and a good person inside of everyone.
WANTED CONNECTIONS
a page will be coming soon with more detailed descriptions! but off the top of my head: biological mother, biological siblings, foster siblings, college friends, teacher friends, artist friends, ex-girlfriend that she dated before leaving for college, neighbors, former bully in high school turned close friend. and as always, anything that your beautiful mind can think of!
TAKEN CONNECTIONS
adopted brother --- @conncrwoods --- kelsey’s #1 in life. she will forever consider him her best friend and he’s always the first one kelsey calls in a time of crisis. she’d do anything for him.
childhood friends --- @lvcybirch, @elirades, @will-blooms --- people that kelsey grew up with in crownsville and have stayed close over the years.
first love --- @tierneytaylcr --- tierney and kelsey met in college. they were each other’s roommate. right from the start, they hit it off and fell pretty quickly for each other. they dated for four years but broke up after graduation because kelsey wanted to return home while tierney wanted to travel the world and pursue her music career.
roommate --- @ellymunro --- honestly, kelsey believes they were destined to be each other’s roommate. elly is one of the only people who is just as nerdy as kelsey is. she can’t imagine living with anyone else.
current girlfriend --- @silver-sixx --- in true kelsey fashion, kelsey was crushing hard on silver ever since they met on the booze cruise. completely flustered, kelsey accidentally introduced herself as batman. kelsey was sure that she completely ruined her chances until a month later, when silver kissed her in a coffee shop. they’ve been together ever since.
close friend / lowkey bad influence --- @amara-lange --- whereas kelsey has always played it safe and never wanted any trouble, amara always presses kelsey to get out of her comfort zone. kelsey is always nervous but ends up loving it. almost all of her ‘wild’ stories happened with amara.

Boogie and Women
Boogie has a very dim attitude towards women, treating them as either therapists or prostitutes, or both. Boogie has said that he has no moral issue with dating people as young as the ‘age of consent’. This implies a lack of moral judgement on dating younger people. When pursuing women, Boogie has often tried to date people in their 20s, despite being near 50 himself.
Boogie has claimed to be a first-wave ‘femenist’. What he means by identifying by a ‘wave’ of feminism that occurred in the late 19th and early 20th century, as opposed to contemporary feminism, is unclear. Boogie has said that the opinions of women matter more to him, and it’s been demonstrated that he seems to get angrier at the opinions of women who disagree with him moreso than that of men. This is demonstrated by the anger he showed to Kat Blaque, Lucy Foxx, or Allison Steele.
Porn Blog: Although Boogie has changed his personality a lot, his attitude towards women was at it’s worst during the time in which he ran multiple porn blogs. Here you can see the worst of his comments about women.
Dani: Boogie claimed that in high school, he dated a black girl. In 2017, Boogie has claimed that he got into fistfights to defend her, however on the Killstream he went back on this, saying that he only got into one fistfight when he was 12.
He spoke about her in an incredibly caustic way in a group chat, saying “So fuck her. And now she’s dead [...] She died at 39 of fuckin’ lung cancer. She had breast cancer and the beat the breast cancer, but the treatment for the breast cancer gave her lung cancer (laughs)”. He would later defend these comments by claiming ‘double cancer’ was coined by Dani, though has never addressed the ‘fuck her’ comment.
Dez Williams: Boogie’s ex-wife has long been suspected of being a victim to his emotional abuse. He has mentioned that he screamed at her, and has acted highly possessive to her. More about this can be found in the emotional abuse article.
Boogie showed intense cruelty during the divorce proceedings, forcing her to sign a Non-Disparage Clause. Getting a dog was Dez’s idea, and Boogie was against it from the beginning. So naturally, during the divorce, she requested custody of their dog Sammy. However, Boogie did not allow for this, and instead alleged that his therapist told him that ‘a man is supposed to [...] let a her have everything have what she needed but not what she wanted’. Boogie’s will specifically dictates that Dez is not to get Sammy even if he dies.
After leaving her, Boogie’s fans have continued to harass her, telling her to remarry him. Boogie has done little to stop this, and continues to call her very often. He has made a video where he angrily destroyed an effigy of her after the divorce (it should be noted that he did this ‘as Francis’, but Boogie has said Francis is how he launders his opinions and deals with anger). Dez has endured much, but is genuinely happy now. However, when she posted this, Boogie immediately responded with an image of himself with one of his sugar babies.
Sugar Babies: Since his divorce, Boogie has often Paid women to date him, often in a sugar daddy style relationship where they are paid to be around him. Although he often claims to attract women by being nice, he has admitted to using paid dating websites.
Lucy Foxx: Boogie met Lucy Foxx on Seeking, a sugar daddy/baby relationship website. He claimed he wanted to help her build her career. These kinds of relationships typically involve trading money and gifts for a pseudo-dating type of relationship.
Lucy Foxx was a woman who dated Boogie briefly in a sugar daddy/sugar baby relationship after his divorce. Boogie often gave her lootcrate toys and other hand-me-downs as gifts. In a tearful video, she described the emotional abuse he would put her through. This included keeping her trapped inside the house, stopping her from earning income, and then refusing to give her money. In one instance, she mentioned him stopping her from leaving by shouting “You know I need somebody right now”.
Furthermore, he would frequently demean her, saying “you don’t mean shit to me”, and “you’re just a piece of shit”, and refer to her as a “hooker”. He would also scream at her daily. Despite meeting on a sugar daddy website, Boogie would later criticize her for asking for money from him. Lucy, like any person, had her own emotional issues, but Boogie would not listen to her and made her feel unimportant.
It should be noted that Lucy was 20 when she met Boogie, and claimed that he had engaged in similar abuse with girls ‘younger than’ her.
At the end of the relationship, he told her to “keep my fucking name out of your mouth”. Boogie would later confirm this specific comment, though saying “she swore she would never tell lies about me in public”. Boogie has maintained that Lucy Foxx has falsely accused him of abuse. As a side note, Boogie has said that ‘false accusers of rape’ can never be forgiven for their crime, as opposed to rapists. Boogie would claim to have ‘nothing but love for her’, but also like tweets calling her horrible and sociopathic, a sentiment his fans continue to express.
Boogie has NEVER addressed the claims of Lucy Foxx, other than to say that she is lying. He has repeatedly said that it is self-evident that he did not abuse her. Beyond this, he has never addressed any of the claims she made.
Grave Ghoul: After dating Lucy Foxx, Boogie began to associate with Grave Ghoul, another girl who offered paid escort services. Similarly to Lucy Foxx, Boogie would say that he was trying to help her build her career. She would often appear in his videos and other content, sitting in the back silently.
Boogie would often time posts with Grave Ghoul to appear after his Ex-Wife’s pictures on instagram. Otherwise, she would not be seen close to him often, and would often keep her distance from him where possible.
Boogie stressed her ‘marketability’, referring to her erotic content, and claimed she had become very successful due to him. He would also say that he wanted her in his videos solely to ‘stir up drama’, and piss off his critics at SamandTolki and Kiwi Farms. Despite this, Grave Ghoul would remove all mentions of Boogie from her social media. Boogie would claim that she had been bullied off the internet by his critics, but this seems to be referring more to how his own references being scrubbed. Boogie would also later claim that he had been accused of abuse of Grave Ghoul, but what he meant by this is unclear. He would complain about her later, and reveal her real name.
New Girl:
Boogie started a new account on Seeking shortly after Grave Ghoul removed him from her life called ‘Southern King’, despite saying he would never use the site again.
Boogie began tweeting about a new girlfriend, who he claimed he met through a mutual friend, and that she was over 28. He would also repeatedly claim they were ‘only friends’, something he has done in the past to escorts.
It would later be found out that she also was a 26 year old escort from Seeking.
Other Women:
Other women have entered Boogie’s life in a non-romantic context and found themselves being reacted to poorly.
Kat Blaque
Kat Blaque is a trans woman vlogger who had briefly engaged with Boogie, gently critiquing a take of his. 8 months later, Boogie approached her at VidCon, threatening to kill himself because of her tweet. Boogie would corner her in a crowded space, and threaten to kill himself. This was witnessed by Lindsey Ellis, who documented the experience, noting that he screamed and was incredibly angry. As noted in the documentation, Boogie would cite her tweet as the reason he would kill himself. Later in an extended monologue, he would reinterpret this as threatening to kill himself to change YouTube culture.
It should be noted that Boogie threatened suicide to several people at VidCon, but only Kat Blaque endured this treatment. Boogie often discusses varying topics with people he meets, but rarely raises his voice in anger to anyone but women.
In a stream discussing his father: Boogie has described his father as a child molester, one of the groups that he said can never be forgiven. However, when a female fan criticized his father, he threatened to “knock her the fuck out”.
Anita Sarkeesian: Boogie has engaged with Anita Sarkeesian a lot, and said that he would never insult her as she was a woman. However, 15 days earlier, he said that he should never be ‘humane’ to Anita Sarkeesian. He acknowledged that he had been responsible for harassing her by proxy. He would also blame her for the death of an activist.
E-Girl: After being told that the term “E-Girl” was offensive, Boogie promised to remove it from his vocabulary. However, he continued to use the term, blocking people who mentioned the contradiction.
Who’s Boogie?: When Boogie joined a woman’s stream, he got very angry when she didn’t recognize him. He repeated ‘Who’s Boogie!’ mockingly many times, before sexualizing the young woman.
Sex Workers: Boogie often talks derogatorily about ‘hookers’, and claims to make use of them regularly. He would say that immigration was okay because it would bring him more women to date. The majority of women he interacts with are sex workers, and he often takes a paternalistic tone with them.

Another year, another list of books. I tried very hard to narrow down my list to a reasonable number and settled on fifteen. My original list had 60! It was a good year for books. The books are sort of in order of preference, as of today. Ask me tomorrow, and the order will change. I tried to include a variety of genres, especially those who don’t usually get the love on these best of lists, like romance. Also included are thrillers, literary fiction, books bound for book club love, and even a holiday romance.
THIS TENDER LAND by William Kent Kruger: The writing is simply superb. The characters are unforgettable, and the setting is rich and evocative.  I have seen this book described as an updated Huckleberry Finn, and that is an apt comparison, as is its comparison to Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath and Homer’s Odyssey. These are some heady correlations, and Kruger’s book easily stands up to them. There are some major themes at play here, starting with the grand adventure on the river. This is an epic odyssey, often chaotic, and at times, spiritual. But other themes are also important, like the deplorable mistreatment of Native Americans in this country, and much of the history revealed here was completely new to me. Book clubs will love it; there is a deep, rich reservoir worthy of discussion.
ALL THIS COULD BE YOURS by Jami Attenberg: Victor was a criminal in his business life, and a tyrant in his personal life, and is at the end of his life; the novel unfolds on the day he has his fatal heart attack.  Attenberg is a master of subtlety as she divulges everyone’s thoughts, including the one-off characters like the clerk at a CVS and the coroner. The unusual twist here is that the reader learns all their stories, while the characters do not. Contemporary family sagas don’t get much better than this.
BROMANCE BOOK CLUB by Lyssa Kay Adams: This was the most brilliant and original idea for a romance novel that I have seen in a very long time. The premise of men reading romance novels to learn about women was positively inspired, and made me think all men should be forced to read them! This is a clever, heartwarming, fun and sexy read.
RED, WHITE & ROYAL BLUE BY Casey McQuiston: To pigeonhole this book is to do it a great disservice. Yes, it is a gay romance. It is also very political, but in a sweet, fantasy sort of way that really appealed to me. Alex and Henry’s story made me laugh and made me cry and especially made me wish for a better America. And if that surprises you, you must be new here. It’s fantastical and idealistic and I loved it.
FLEISHMAN IS IN TROUBLE by Taffy Brodesser-Akner: Toby Fleishman is a recently divorced 40-something doctor in Manhattan, AKA catnip to women, and they are not shy about letting him know. Toby is like a kid in a candy store. This new world order is working for him. Until his ex goes missing, and the party feels like it’s over. A lot of the stuff that happens is laugh out loud funny, and other parts are infuriating and sometimes sad, but all in all, this is a book that begs to be discussed. A first novel with complex characters and a lot of emotion, and I loved the writing.
THE OYSTERVILLE SEWING CIRCLE by Susan Wiggs: This is a book of the #MeToo movement, set in the fashion industry, which for some reason, has been exempt from this. At least I haven’t seen any earth-shattering stories, but as in any industry where mostly men are in power, one can’t help but wonder…This was a very good read, filled with the empathy and power that words can bring to such a dark subject. Book groups will find lots to discuss here.
THE EXTRAORDINARY LIFE OF SAM HELL by Robert Dugoni: Our main character is Sam Hill, AKA Sam Hell, who is born with ocular albinism, which means that the irises of his eyes are red instead of the usual brown, blue, hazel, etc. and hence the nickname. We meet him as an infant, and get to watch him grow up, survive being bullied, and eventually become the man he was meant to be. The writing is really good, almost ethereal in parts, which seems fitting for a book steeped in Catholicism. This was my favorite line: “There comes a day in every man’s life when he stops looking forward and starts looking back.” Something to think about for sure. An excellent read, perfect for book discussion, and I’m just sorry I didn’t get to it sooner.
THINGS YOU SAVE IN A FIRE by Katherine Center: Center turns the whole hot firemen romance genre on its head with Cassie, her feisty, smart woman firefighter. When her estranged mother asks her to move to Boston to take care of her for a little while, The small fire station she joins is Boston Irish, over a hundred years old, and has never had a woman working there, so not easy. But fun, so much fun! There are lots of starred reviews for this and tons of praise, all of it well deserved. It isn’t often that a book lives up to its hype for me, but this one did. I loved it.
DAISY JONES & THE SIX by Taylor Jenkins Reid: This was a fun and nostalgic read for me. The format of the book, for lack of a better word, is interview style of a 70’s rock band. An oral history of sorts. Each character is quoted in response to questions, but we don’t know who is asking the questions or why until the end. So it reads in basically multiple first-person, an interesting technique. It’s also a fast read, especially as I got deeper and deeper into it. It is a very compelling story written in a unique way.
A COWBOY UNDER THE MISTLETOE by Jessica Clare: This romance ticked a lot of boxes that I really like; damaged characters, small town, cowboys, and Christmas. This was a warm, holiday read filled with love and grace and hope. A wonderful holiday romance!
GET A LIFE, CHLOE BROWN by Talia Hibbert: This is a British import and a wonderful read. The push for diversity in romance has been strong, and we, the readers, are reaping the benefits. I loved these characters. I was completely immersed in their world, and could not put down this book.
ELLIE AND THE HARP MAKER by Hazel Prior: I am loving this trend of romances with a main protagonist “on the spectrum,” as they say, and even though it is never explicitly stated, it doesn’t have to be. Dan builds beautiful and unique Celtic harps in his barn and lives upstairs. When Ellie stumbles onto his shop in the woods, he gifts her with a harp. Her husband is not happy about it, to say the least. This is a charming story, full of pathos and drama and love. I loved the Britishness of this story and especially the uniqueness of these English characters. The difference in our cultures is apparent here, and I loved that.
MY LOVELY WIFE by Samantha Downing: This was a dark but super fun read. The couple in this book are serial killers, yes a married couple, and they are killing for the fun of it. Super creepy. That is a hard thing to get around yet somehow Downing convinces us to root for them. It’s like magic. Or talent. Or both. There are some excellent twists in the story for sure, and the ending was a real surprise for me. It was truly unputdownable and I loved it!
THE WEIGHT OF A PIANO by Chris Cander: This book opens with the construction of a Blüthner piano, a fascinating tale about a brand of piano I had not heard of, that is supposedly in the same class as a Steinway. The story then moves back and forth in time, following the piano through two storylines. Cander makes it possible to grow attached to an inanimate object, for her characters and the reader. This is an excellent read sure to be beloved by book groups as there is much to discuss here, from the immigration of Russian Jews to the relationships that are so well depicted.
JUDGMENT by Joseph Finder: Wow! This is Finder’s best book so far, and that is saying a lot. I loved this character, Juliana is a working mom with all that goes along with that, has what seems like a pretty good marriage, at least from the outside, and a job that she loves. But there are definitely cracks in the marriage and her little infidelity brings such enormous consequences that the marriage is the least of it. The story is compelling, the characters seem like people I could know. This was a nonstop read for me, I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.
Best Books of 2019: Stacy Alesi, AKA the BookBitch™ Another year, another list of books. I tried very hard to narrow down my list to a reasonable number and settled on fifteen.

‘Cross My Heart’ is the powerful debut single from Average Joe, which is available today.
An affecting and immediately-arresting introduction, Average Joe take the very ordinariness of everyday life – the mundanity, heartache, hard graft, and little victories – and twist it all into something transformative, and hopeful. Brooding front-man Joe was raised in Stoke-on-Trent, an ex-industrial area whose cultural heritage – a thriving Northern Soul scene, Jimi Hendrix once playing in what is now a Wetherspoons – has slowly been eroded into a city sometimes known for little more than the birthplace of Robbie Williams. Growing up, the escapist (yet seemingly unreachable) possibilities of music were made clear to Joe from an early age: his mum sang folk lullabies to him from the womb onwards, whilst his landlord Dad’s “working class attitude, yet aristocratic high standards” exposed Joe to classic, confessional storytellers such as John Martyn or Tom Waits. Joe felt emboldened to sign up for the school musical but – one scrappy year of bullying later – threw himself instead into the local post-punk scene, where his frustrations and fears were filtered into the idea of writing your own songs instead.
‘Cross My Heart’ is the first fruits of this turbulent but creatively rich period for Average Joe. As inspired by vintage soul, hip-hop and classic R&B as the caustic spirit of Sleaford Mods or Mike Skinner, here are timeless themes rendered raw and razor-sharp on the conditions of the present day: Joe wrote the track following a retreat to his bedroom post-break-up, teaming up with production partner Jim (a nurse at the hospital across the road) between stints at the bar to bring the forthcoming Average Joe mixtape to vivid life. And in its dissection of modern-day masculinity, old-school romance and those experiences which unite us all regardless of where you’re from or what you have – whether having your heart broken or simply smoking too much – ‘Cross My Heart’ commences a project which is in fact anything but Average.
