#but i do have some cool 3d projects in the works
silvysartfulness · 2 days
Note
I'm involved in a project that requires casting some residential circular-arch doors out of concrete, one side at a time. I was considering designing the embellishments with digital tools and having them cut with a CNC machine for the mold, but it seems like a lot of trouble and I already know how to design things in the physical world. My question: what did you carve your beautiful embellished doors from, was it expensive, and do you think it'd work to cast a rubber mold from?
That sounds like a really cool project!
The carved panels on the doors I made were made in mdf-board. It's pretty cheap, about the same as plywood, and you can carve it like wood with a multitool - with the right bit, it's pretty fast work! (I talk about the different bits I use in this post.)
As long as the relief doesn't have any wierdly angled deep nooks and crannies, you should absolutely be able to make a rubber cast from it! Especially if you put down a base coat of somewhat glossy paint first, to make all the surfaces smooth and non-porous!
(Mandatory word of caution - carving mdf means a lot of sawdust, and it's a health-hazard to breathe it in. So do it outside, if you can, and wear a mask and goggles!)
The board on the doors is actually quite thin, about 10-12mm - the layered paint helps accentuate the 3D depth of the carvings. If you want a physically deeper relief, it'll be more work to carve it and the mdf sheets are more expensive the thicker they are.
That said, even a relatively shallow pattern can be very striking!
Tumblr media
This divider was carved from 10mm mdf, so the carvings are just a few mm deep, but even without paint, it makes for a pretty effect! 🙂
If you do go ahead with it, feel free to share pictures! I'd love to see what you end up making! 😀

The Devonian trilobite Crotalocephalina gibba.
Made as a more or less successful exercise to emulate the style of Junnn11, the person who illustrated many of the wikipedia articles on Cambrian arthropods and Paleozoic euchelicerates (and whose art I happen to like very much).

I've always wanted to try doing a comic. Do you have any advice for a beginner who's never drawn comics? any mistakes you made that you learned from or just tips?
similar to making a video game and an animated series, don't jump into a massive project right away. practice a bit with smaller, shorter and simpler stories. really allow yourself to refine your work and your writing
if you ever plan on working on an official series, make an outline. seriously, this is so obvious but so many new writers dont create one. they just have an ending and a few key moments planned and think its enough
you will learn, very quickly how annoying backgrounds are. dont be afraid to cheat and use 3D assets to make the workload easier on yourself.
when it comes to design, be sure to draw characters you're fine with drawing over and over again. that really detailed tattoo looks cool on a cover, but how do you feel about redrawing it 5 times in one page?
paneling is a very common thing i see artists disregard when they make comics for the first time. it should be pretty readable (like i love jojo's bizarre adventure but my god its like araki wants to straight up confuse his readers)
dont over explain, let your art speak for itself. your readers are smarter than you think, and gestures and expressions can convey enough.
do cheats. not every panel needs a background. zoom in on the face. copy and paste characters and backgrounds, this one seems obvious but i know a lot of artists are afraid of being seen as lazy. value your physical health over some guy online complaining about you being lazy

❀ Pairing: Idol!Jungkook x Producer! F. reader
❀ Summary: Meeting Jungkook was a chance of fate. A moment frozen in time, eyes meeting across a room full of lights. The more the two of you advance in your career, the more lost in the lights you become. What if you never find your way back?
❀ Word Count: 583
❀ Genre: Heavy angst, Idolverse, strangers to lovers, eventual smut
❀ Rating: 18+ Minors are strictly prohibited from engaging and reading this content. It contains explicit content and any minors discovered reading or engaging with this work will be blocked immediately.
❀ Warnings: Nothing really in this chapter, vague references to being a kid growing up in a competitive environment, reader being a little poetic about her childhood.
❀ Published: September 28, 2023
❀ A/N: Hola, in honor of 3D I decided to post the prologue of this thing I have been working on while on hiatus as a cool project to inspire myself to write again. I have no idea what I’m doing, but I am writing this story as though it were sort of a ... famous person tells all. 98% of the story will be in the present tense and we read it as if it's happening, with small interludes of present-day where reader is reflecting on her life in an interview with Namjoon. I have no idea if I will stick with it, so please be patient and let me write this at whatever pace works best for me. And remember - there are going to be very dark parts of this series, and Jungkook and reader both are going to have very ugly moments. If that’s not your cup of tea and you do not like to see characters epically fail and sometimes reveal the ugly parts of themselves, this fic is not for you.
❀ Disclaimer: All members of BTS are faces and name claims for this story. This is entirely a work of fiction and by no means is meant to be a projection, judgment, or representation of real-life people. Any scenarios or representations of the people and places mentioned in works are not representative of real-life scenarios. This series in no way attempts to paint a realistic depiction of idols, or the industry, or draw comparisons. None of the scenes or elements in this series in any way reflect how I perceive the music industry and do not represent any opinions as a whole. This is not intellectual commentary, it is just straight-up fiction.

“In omnia paratus. Ready for anything,” you scoff, shaking your head. “Seems like a pretty big ideal for a teenager. You have to understand, we all felt that way. A bunch of kids working for the same dream, ready to push, shove, claw our way to it.”
Namjoon adjusts his glasses and nods. His long legs are crossed at the ankle as he leans back in his seat, the perfect picture of poise. His glasses are low on his nose and he’s dressed in a warm cardigan today to fight off the chill of Autumn.
“Was it really competitive?” he prompts, fingers laced together. “What was that like?”
“It’s hard to say. I viewed it through the lens of a kid at the time. I guess to me it would have felt like a game - be better than everyone else, get a reward.”
“And now, through the lens of an adult.”
You heave a sigh and blow out air. You're in the comfort of your home up in the hills, a fireplace crackling to your left. The production crew thankfully didn’t fuss with your living room too much. It was perfect the way it was, muted tones and lived in, not some minimal, sterile space like Seokjin might have or the maximalist terror of Taehyung’s estate.
“Now,” you venture, slowly stringing the words together. “I think it was where I learned to take no prisoners and to do whatever I had to do to win. Being that close to your dream, and meeting the legends you want to imitate while living in constant fear it might be taken away… it creates a feral desire in you. Feeds the monster inside the kid that has just started to wake up.”
“Would you say that’s where the hardship began?”
You shake your head. “Not the kind that we’re here to talk about. It wasn’t like - I wasn’t a child star, you know? I was still relatively normal. It was school and working on dancing and singing and all of these things because I wanted to produce music and it was hard, but it wasn’t… It wasn't cruel. It wasn’t dark.”
“When would you say is when it first really started to turn for you?” Namjoon asks, leaning forward a bit. “The first moment you can remember that you might have taken that first step towards everything.”
“In omnia paratus,” you murmur again. You think about that night, gaze unfocused. You no longer see Namjoon, but rather a shock of shaggy, black hair, doe eyes filled with promise, and an arm full of tattoos. “Ready for anything but Jungkook, apparently.”
Namjoon raises his brows. “So the night you met Jungkook?”
“In nihil paratus. I was ready for nothing, least of all the likes of fucking Jeon. That was the first night my management ever asked me to do something extreme. So I did.”
“Tell me about that night, then.”
You remember it so well. You’re not sure how out of all the memories, this one seems so preserved. Crystal clear and sharp at the edges. You remember the tight, white shirt Jungkook was wearing, tucked into dark jeans paired with boots. His tattoos were stark against his shirt and his hair was wavy, a little damp with sweat.
Jungkook had looked at you from across the event floor, an ocean swimming with swaying bodies and flashing lights, cryogenic fog hanging in the air. You’d just walked in, careful not to trip in your stilettos as you walked down the steps. Nervous. Near cracking under pressure.
And then you looked up, right at those round, dark eyes.
In nihil paratus. You were ready for nothing.

lol while I'm waxing nostalgic... this was some of the very first 3D texture work I ever did, for a class I was taking way back in 2015! They had us start simple with texturing-- those shapes are just a cylinder and a cube. The assignment was to do one painted texture and one photorealistic texture for each, and I still think these look fun, like assets for a super low-poly art game.
I wasn't actually very consistent at backing up my work during that year anywhere other than the school server, which really sucks for me now (a lot of the only documents I have to remember some very time-consuming projects by are handfuls of viewport screenshots), but I was pleasantly surprised recently to unearth a whole bunch of work I'd saved to google drive but just had never downloaded to my actual computer. These images were mixed up in there! I thought I didn't have any record of this particular project left, so it was cool to find them.

Behind the scenes: interiors and architecture
Hey, guys! I know that it isn't that type of a post that are interesting for the general public and/or gain much attention, but I still wanted to share some of the stuff that I usually keep to myself. So here are the screenshots of my 3D-models that I use for the background art! I created all of them myself and collected them carefully within the years to reuse some of the smaller models/elements in my future works.
Starting with my favourite one: The MacFragan inn for @inwilis. It's also my biggest model so far! It took WEEKS to finish. This version is slightly edited: I combined a few different shots with different lighting.
Tumblr media
And this is how the model looks like in Sketch-Up:
Tumblr media
There's also the stairway that didn't end up in the shot.
Tumblr media
This is how it ended up looking in color:
Tumblr media
Moving on to the next one! The abandoned chirch for the mixed media art featuring Kirsi that I did for Evelynn Gonti!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Different angle!
Tumblr media
Here's an earlier version of the model. This was a small experiment on coloring:
Tumblr media
And the finished background:
Tumblr media
Next one! The city model for the tryptich piece I did for @inwilis. There were actually two versions of this model: the regular one, and the post-war one. Enjoy the little random vase on the left, because my models are a mess!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some architecture details!
Tumblr media
Finished backgrounds:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh! This one is interesting. I actually never posted this piece online, because it's a bit n/s/f/w.
Tumblr media
Finished background:
Tumblr media
Another abandoned church! This one is for the piece I did for CaIamarti!
Tumblr media
And a coloring WIP!
Tumblr media
Another background for the piece I did for @inwilis and @bitemerogers. This one actually exists in two versions. The first model was scrapped, but I used it to make a tutorial.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some earlier work! Drow architecture for the piece I did for Nielspeterdejong back in 2021.
Tumblr media
And another oldie that I still adore:
Tumblr media
Colored version! Still use it as an example of how cool I am at doing backgrounds xD
Tumblr media
Here comes some of the smaller models! My fantasy assets. The staff can be seen on the Vesta commission I did for @glatissart!
Tumblr media
Winterhold model I did for this commission for gnomonics!
Tumblr media
The DJ-set I modeled for @happy-go-pucky's commission! Bonus: the analogue one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beware! The first model I did for my 2D art: the Temen-Ni-Gru tower (it's horrible and completely broken).
Tumblr media
That's all for now! Some of the models are lost forever, some of them are made for other people's projects, and some of them I forgot. I also have a tutorial on how I color this models!

Help a trans lesbian make a game!
I don’t need cash, just hard number that show interests in the game. While the trailers on other platforms are more sanitized, this is the place I can actually show what the game is about, having semi-metaphorical lesbian sex with the planet Jupiter.
“Fly the Clouds of Jupiter” can be summarized as Journey x Subnautica in a gas giant, with Outer Wilds style storytelling. I’ve worked on this using my unemployment benefits, but they’ll run out in a year, and the project needs to be funded by then.
You can follow the devlogs on instagram, tiktok, and reddit at @fleeting_being
[Video ID: A 3d-rendered plane flying around orange clouds under a dark blue sky, and fighting against similar looking planes. The planes have while trails and shoot red bullets. In the background, you can see large whales and jellyfishes. The main plane flies in and out of clouds, and shoots down the enemy planes. Video ends with the plane flying high and looking at the horizon. Overlaid on the video is black text with a white outline. ./ End ID]
[Text Id: Do you want to sext the planet Jupiter?
And maybe see some cool clouds and blow up planes playing as an archeological probe built by an hypercapitalistic society that’s also a metaphor for being a trans lesbian or something what do I know
Then buy my game
In like a year when it’s out, it’s gonna take some time but I need to prove I can get an audience to get money from investors I think that’s how it works ./ End ID]

Saw a post the other day asking how P03 is able to see; my best guess is something like this.
I actually inspected P03′s 3D model for this which I don’t usually do (and then I proceeded to draw it off-model anyway. Whoops) but even outside of its hypothetical camera-vision, there’s a few other things of note:
P03 seems to have a lot of large vents (or at least things that look like some sort of ventilation/cooling). Two major ones on the chest, three on the top of the head (with potentially another on the side of its head), and one on the underside of its base (though that one might be for the hologram projection it uses to float). My best guess is that it’s because his factory is built right by the water where there would be a TON of moisture in the air. For that reason, some of them have got to be exhausts to make sure all of the air circulating in his torso is dry. That or he just overheats extremely easily I guess, but I’m leaning towards the humidity explanation (or it could be a combination of the two).
Its “eyes” are somewhere on the front of its face; whether it sees through a camera or just through the eyes on the screen via video game magic is up for debate, but it turns to face the player when they stand up so its vision probably isn’t on the sides of its head or something.
Similarly, P03 has some sort of sensitivity to touch (he reacts to Leshy’s hands gripping his monitor before Leshy says anything). I don’t think any “touch sensors” would be externally visible though.
Presumably (based on the ending to Act 3) P03′s head isn’t just a monitor, there’s vital systems in there as well (otherwise tearing its head off wouldn’t do anything to disrupt its upload/its ability to function). My best guess is that his power supply is in his chest so it would be the equivalent of just... unplugging your computer while it’s trying to preform updates.
The wire it uses to connect to the modules to update cards in Act 3 seems to come from either its neck or its torso, but in act 2 it’s very visibly on the side of the head. Granted the act 2 sprites are all pretty different from the Scrybes’ 3D models so that’s not an outlier.
The range of motion in P03′s arm seems pretty similar to a human arm; he has a ball-and-socket joint on the shoulder and a hinge joint on his elbow plus separate segments for the “wrist” and “hand”. The only thing it probably can’t do is twist its forearm.
I don’t have any idea what either of the cranks do. The head crank moves when it changes its expression so it might have something to do with its display, but the arm crank is only shown doing anything on the G0lly Uberbot hologram. My best guess is that P03 used to have a lot more built-in functions but ended up removing them in order to operate faster so a lot of the buttons and switches on it are just vestigial leftovers. (The idea of the arm crank being able to function as a hand-crank motor in a pinch is really funny though. Spin it a few times when P03 is out of power and you can generate just enough battery for it to tell you to fuck off then go back into sleep mode again).
I have no idea how the levitation works either. It’s cool and that’s why it works. No need to get more complicated than that.

.50 Caliber 3D Platformer Post #7
Environment AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAART:
Finally, I've gotten around to making the environment art for the one level that I've got rn. I've been playing the system shock remake, and I really love how that game creates the illusion of grungy detail that reveals itself to be very low-resolution textures up-close. I knew I wanted the game to look like of grungy for a while now, but I didn't know exactly how I would go about achieving it. I toyed with the idea of layering photocopy textures over everything, but I eventually settled on using low resolution textures that are dithered with web colors. I'm quite happy with how it ended up looking. I think it has a source engineish vibe that reveals itself to be more colorful and strange up-close.
The Textures:
The process for making these is a lot simpler and less time consuming that how I usually make textures. This is mostly because I'm relying a lot more on the baked lighting to make things look good in this particular game, so the textures can get away with being less detailed. I'm mostly just grabbing stuff off of websites like textures.com and adjusting the contrast / coloration before shrinking them down and lowering the color depth. Here are some examples of how they look wowee wow:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lightinggg:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For this game I'm using baked lighting as opposed to vertex based or realtime. I really like how it looks, and it ends up saving me a lot of time. If you don't know how baked lighting works, basically I place lights around a scene in unity, and then I use anything but unity's built in lightbaker that is bad and sucks (I use bakery) to essentially turn the lighting into a texture map that is placed on the mesh. It turns lights into textures basically. It is a lot more performant than real-time lighting, and it usually looks a lot better as well. With this game's particular art style, everything really ends up coming together with the lighting, and it would look pretty trash without it.
Cameo Skinz:
I've always really liked putting cameos in my stuff from artists that I'm friends with and/or take a lot of inspiration from. In this game, I plan to include a lot of unlockable skins for the player character that are characters from games / animations / whatever that I like. So far I've made a couple to breakup my time working on environment art. Check um out:
Tumblr media
This one is Peter Shorts from an upcoming game called You Are Peter Shorts. I loved this dude at first sight and it was the first skin I ended up making. He was really fun to make because he has no body or hands, so I ended up making his head/torso one big thing that is attached to the head bone. You are Peter Shorts is made by the talented ondydev who I don't think I've actually asked permission to include this skin yet. If it doesn't end up in the final game pretend I didn't post about it lol. You should check out their previous game Tres-Bashers if you haven't.
Tumblr media
This one is Appy from Brawlers World! Brawlers World is one of those creative projects that is so great that it gives me envy. I'm honestly so excited to be able to have this little dude in my game, and I think he ended up fitting into the art style super well. Those are the only two skins I've made so far. I have a lot more planned including Nova from Anodyne 2, Frog from Jamphibian, Knight of Trye from Knight's Try, Orbo from Peeb Adventures & Orbo's Odyssey, and some characters from my own stuff. They aren't a high priority right now because I have to actually make the game first, but I'll probably make a few here and there to curb burnout, and I'll show them off whenever I do. I am v passionate about the cool shit my peers are making, and I hope other people are too.
Conclusion:
idk it's like 8 am and I haven't slept. I've just been workin a lot while listening to the magnus archives. I guess I can turn this conclusion into me talking about the magnus archives. I'm on episode 197 while writing this so im almost done. It is p cool and I like how much it changes tonally overtime. It really feels like a big long journey, and I like media that can do that kinda thing. It is now a series that I will forever associate with the development of this game considering I listened to it all while working on it. It's kinda funny how that happens. Sometimes I'll be in a location in one of my games and it'll make me think about some video essay or w/e that I was watching while making it. Anyway, have a good day every1 pls tyty

hi! im an art student and im supposed to research artists who inspire me for a 2D-Design project. Part of the project is finding out which artists inspire my inspirations. So, who are some artists who inspire you? (doesnt just have to be drawing, could be any type of artist)
thank u and ur art is cool :3
O BOY OKAY i’ll just drop a bunch of usernames !!!! these guys fill my heart w joy love etc (these r all twt username but probably same for other platforms as well)
puyogho
everydaylouie (for both his 3d, 2d , and music! )
keo_chuuu_
cronchybaguette
kowagos (instagram handle! and dear friend of mine)
AmiThompson_h
jdebbiel
splatbones
kevin_macross (instagram handle!)
spacecrumble (instagram handle!!!)
worthikids (animation but also music)
those are just off the top of my head! all of their work shapes my life a little bit everyday forever i feel
kevin macross n spacecrumble display quiet intimacy in their work that inspires me more than maybe anything else on this list. i rlly admire capturing that sorta muted but real emotion between people more than any technical or aesthetic work because it’s SO hard for me to do, i’d love to learn how to!

How I Made my V2 Cosplay
Oh boy! This right here is about how I make my cosplay head of V2. Some of the stages don't have photos, but i'll do my best to explain what I did. I also have no WIPs of the gloves, but those were super straight forward. Some photos are very low quality due to my phone having a damaged camera at the time, and other photos were taken from my instagram story as they're the only photos I have from that stage. Please note that this is not a tutorial! This is more of a story of a disastrous (but ultimately successful) project done by someone with no idea what they were doing. Please find actual tutorials by more experienced people!
The Modeling Base
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This right hear is a big chunk of upholstery foam! I own a ton of this stuff, so i decided the best way to start this was a foam blank. Well, this was a bad idea in retrospect, but hey it technically worked. Kinda. I started by drawing the basic shape, then cutting out thick sheets. From there, I glued them together and began shaping with scissors to get the desired shape. Honestly a 3D modeled blank may have been better, or a base made of foam board pieces used instead. Live and learn I suppose.
Tumblr media
After I got the shape to something i was happy with, I began the transition to EVA foam. To do this, I mummified the thing in duct tape and marked seam lines in sharpie. I then cut out these duct tape pieces, and stuck them to paper to act as a backing.
Foam Shell Construction
Once I had a pattern, I began making the actual head. To do this, I traced the pattern onto sheets of EVA foam (I believe 4mm or 6mm) and cut them out. Lots of these pieces needed bevels, some of which i had to dremel as shown below due to them not cutting correctly. Bevels are important as they make the foam crease as desired for angular shapes. I'm still pretty amateur with it though, and frequently got bevels wrong.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As I cut pieces, I began gluing them together with an awful gunk called contact cement. This stuff is a special glue that you let dry before sticking the pieces together, and it pretty cool. Unfortunately it's flammable and a carcinogen. As stated before, I'm pretty new to armor, so lots of the seams have weird gaps I had to fix farther down the line. After quite awhile, I had the basic shell assembled. However, the shell had numerous gaps and pieces that didn't fit correctly. Enter the foam clay.
Foam clay is a substance similar to model magic, and was honestly a life saver here. This thing has a second shell basically made of the stuff. I had to fill gaps primarily around the eye socket, but the entire thing honestly barely fit together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After some filling and sanding, I made a test optic. And the head looked preeeety bad. There was something just incredibly off about it. This began the massive amounts of revising and reshaping I had to do. And fixing of awful symmetry. The head required a massive amount of sanding around the sides of the face and the chin. Between initial construction and when I began painting, I completely reshaped these areas. I made the chin significantly smaller, and added the indents or whatever (fins?) on the side of the head. However, doing all of this required me to fill in chunks of the interior with large wads of foam clay. If I hadn't done so, then I would've sanded through it in places. I also made the awful decision to gap fill with hot glue. If you've not dremeled hot glue, I don't recommend trying it. It melts the glue and sends globs of it flying, and those things are hot and really hurt.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After even more sanding, gap filling, and re-sanding, I finally got the shape to something i was happy with. Unfortunately I don't have any photos from just before painting.
Priming and Painting
The next step was for me to slather this thing in primer so it could be painted. I use Plastidip, as a tutorial i saw years ago said it was the best primer. Why does it need primed? I'm not actually entirely sure, but it's what I've heard needs done, so that's what I do.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Plastidip is a spray, so I of course did this outside. After a ton of coats, I was left with a shiny surface ready for the paint. Not much to say on primer.
Due to not currently having a functional airbrush, V2 is entirely hand painted. I coated this guy in red paint, and i mean coated the entire thing. Even areas I'd later paint black. Quick tip: Don't do that. It's a waste of paint. But i did it anyway cause I'm a dumbass. I also had issues when doing the black with getting it to stick, and when removing tape it caused some paint to peal off too. I originally had painted a barcode on the side of the head, but removing the tape took the black paint off too. Sooooo no bar code.
Tumblr media
Once I got the shell painted, I did the optic. The test optic I used was marker on unicorn buckram, but that stuff is really hard to see through, the markers looked bad, and I couldn't pain it without clogging the mesh (due to not having an airbrush and having to do it by hand.) So, I got different mesh: a larger weave black mesh. This stuff I was actually able to hand paint, thus how I got the iris I did.
The Gloves
The gloves were, frankly, rushed. I bought a pair of cheap black costume gloves online, and then glued foam to em. For the gloves, I just used paper patterns to make the foam pieces. No fancy patterning here, just drawing shapes. After cutting the foam, I hot glued it, and then painted them. No priming on these, cause I was lazy and had a con coming up.
Tumblr media
Conclusion
So that's about it! Thank you for reading this monster of a post! I'm hoping to eventually do a V1 head, so I'll be repatterning the V unit head soon. When I do, I'll probably make an actual tutorial. I dunno. We'll see.

I'll share with you what I'm doing as my Bachelor's final project, hold on-
Tumblr media
This little fella here is called Cebrita and is the mascot of the comic club at my uni. I'm making an animated short ad to play in all TVs in campus.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm doing it all, from modeling to rigging to animating, then editing and special effects.
Here's the animatic. Some parts will be 2D, some 3D. I'm doing this project with a friend, she does all 2D scenes and I do all 3D scenes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I personally love how it's turning out and I hope I can have a project I'm proud of at the end of the year (and I hope it can land me a good job too).
There's still a lot of work to do, of course, but I'm optimistic! It's been quite a while since the last time I posted art here because this is taking all my time rn sooooo hey why not share it with you all? :)
If you would like to help a tired college student get their degree AND get a cool drawing while doing it, you could, I dunno, commission me or smth. Just an idea :3 All benefits will go towards ramen packets and coffe.

do you have any tips on starting paper mache?
I want to make both some little dudes and also just some textile art to include in my exam portfolio or project cause I thought it’d be cool but I have no idea where to start.
i think, especially if you're coming from 2D art, starting with a fairly "flat" design might be helpful. all of my recent bugs have been constructed in a flat sandwich kind of style, and it's a really simple process IMO, and easy to translate from 2D into a 3D kind of cutout.
gonna try explaining with pictures because i think that helps:

i start off with two identical cardboard (i prefer cereal box material) cut-outs that will be the "top" and "bottom" of each bug. i tape as many wires as i want to have appendages for onto the inside of one of these cardboard burger buns. then i crumple up paper until i feel like i have a good thickness and sandwich the paper between both cardboard halves!

for all of the attaching up to this point, i use masking tape - to attach the wires and to sandwich the two halves together
at this point, you have something you can put some papier mache onto! i've been using wheat paste to actually glue the paper on, which is a very cheap and easy to make material which you can control viscosity of if its too thick or too thin for your liking!

while "flat" designs like the bugs (and maybe lizards/snakes/worms/fish) work really well, i think this technique could be modified for something that's meant to stand up, you can also bulk out the wire appendages by attaching crumpled paper to them. i've just found it helpful to me to think of my paper mache projects as these sandwiches - and it gives you a sturdier, smoother surface when you're using your cardboard as your final outside layer. you could work on more complex shapes with this method by just considering the whole thing as a bunch of simpler sandwiches stuck together. that's what my snails are!
