So. I figured I would rant a little about the big reveal that’s been going around as I’ve already been spoiled. I’m not a huge kaishin shipper although I did do a big bang event a while back. But to anyone who does ship kaishin, I’m begging you, please don’t delete your works.

Please don’t delete your fics, art, or blogs!!! They are precious works of art that you’ve worked so hard on. I don’t want to see any of it lost.

Detective Conan canon is ridiculous! If we cared about canon we wouldn’t be making all of this stuff in the first place. It’s been over 20 years and we’re suddenly supposed to accept this reveal? Hell nah. Make an AU where that shit did not happen and keep shipping it. It doesn’t matter and I imagine the fandom will already have some sort of AU tag ready that excludes movie 27 from canon (if movie 27 even ends up becoming canon).

Also, don’t bully anyone for still shipping kaishin! It doesn’t make you morally superior and it’s okay if people ship something you don’t like. Akemi and Akai dated and were cousins in canon so tbh it’s kinda par for the course in the franchise. Also in hannin no hanzawa hanzawa has a huge crush on his cousin. Idk what’s going on in this series anymore 💀

I’ve been on dcmk tumblr for about 7 years now and the fandom is honestly such a small, wholesome group. This is the first time we’ve had any real “drama” and I don’t want it to tear us apart. I hope that kaishin shippers keep doing what they’re doing regardless of whatever Gosho is cooking up.

Re: the tags on your post about fantasy books...You aren't obligated to say what the book is you're talking about of course, but you're not obligated to protect others' feelings (or try to prevent their negative behaviors) by cramming YOUR own feelings. :( Especially since you just feel like something in a book really didn't resonate with you because of your experience. I feel like that's such a totally 100% reasonable thing to talk about. Only someone who's really got a chip on their shoulder will try to cancel an author for that (and tbh I'm of the opinion that a lot of "cancelling" these days really is just creators SEEING it as that because they don't want to accept that they don't have every experience and sometimes need to do better by the people who took the time out to read and appreciate their book...If people on the internet are just telling them opinions and not literally doxxing them? They kinda just need to be grown up about it....)

Yeah, to be fair, part of it is just that there probably is a lot more to say about these things? And I honestly just don't feel like thinking about these lighthearted novels I read once in that much depth, and I'm also not really sure how to put to words exactly what I feel.

When I made the original post, I was a little bit Going Through It and didn't feel like typing stuff out (especially because idk. i feel like there's always this urge to make a million caveats, even if i'm not obligated to, so people don't try to take my words as some sort of authority on poc experiences or some deliberate attack on something people like. i'm just some random guy on the internet saying some opinions that don't really mean anything).

There's probably several books this could apply to, but I was mostly thinking about

-the House In the Cerulean Sea (romance novel about a government social worker who checks in on a small orphanage for 'dangerous' magical children to see if things are up to par basically). It's been a bit since I've read this, and I'm not sure I could describe it well even then, but something about the way oppression and prejudice was written (like the way more normal humans feel towards magical people especially the more monstrous-looking or dangerous ones) just felt kind of shallow and too easily resolved? With the main character being given a lot of chances and trust for someone who could easily destroy all these people's lives. Not that poc can't write optimistic worlds where things don't go badly, but I guess it didn't quite land for me

-Legends and Lattes (book about an orc quitting her dnd-style adventuring to make the first place selling coffee, a gnomish drink, in this one city). I just finished this book before making that post. I think part of my complaints with this are just that I actually do know a decent amount about the history of coffee and cafes in our world which is really complex and interesting, so the book basically going from "this one drink sold in shops in Foreign Parts with little additional details given" to "a drink sold in a place that also sells baked goods where students study and local musicians play" with zero inbetween was a bit of a let down.

But also, the history of food as it travels from place to place and carries culture with it is fascinating and this book really didn't have any of that. Coffee was brought by some random passerby who isn't from either where coffee is from or where she brought it to. I think there's like a mention of a gnome immigrant who was like "finally some good fucking coffee" but would the coffee the main character makes really be the same made by gnomes in their homeland? And that's not even getting into how there would probably be regional variation and the coffee she had might not be the same as what the gnome is used to. Coffee seems to be new to just about everyone else in this city, but surely there are other travelers who have their own experiences and opinions on the drink? Do other cultures even exist in this world besides whatever dnd-fantasy-medieval-esque setting of the main city and gnomes (for which the only cultural detail we really know about them is that they have coffee?) There's just really little consideration given into the details of cultural exchange I feel

I feel like in both these cases it's sort of both 'eh of course the author didn't want to go to deep into this, that's not what the book is about' but also 'that actually is literally what this book is about though'. I did enjoy these books, but I don't think they really hit me the way they were intended to because I was a bit distracted by the stuff I felt was missing from it

LITERALYYYYYY its so hard to watch most of his stuff even tho i want to bc hes such a good actor but when theres a new movie of his coming out its almost always a serious drama and im like,,,,,,,,,,do i wanna watch him die again or do i need some happiness rn bcjskqkwjjdjshhhsqjj

probably why i rewatch 100 days my prince so often its my favorite kdrama of his (i love historical dramas so im biased lol) and yeah theres some sad and even tragic moments but its overall a good time and very interesting (plus he and nam jihyun are wonderful in this (and everything they do tbh) and so are the supporting actors

also now im going to use this as an excuse to ramble about my thoughts on the show bc i love it but i have Critiques™ so ill put a read more for spoilers bc ill talk about them a lot

almost all of these issues if not all are all about the writing so there wont be any criticism of the acting which i thought was pretty good overall by kdrama standards (there were only a few times where i thought it was detrimental to my enjoyment but again it was still more to do with my problems with the writing)

so to really get into it, the pacing suffers with the back half of the episodes feeling a bit rushed especially in the last few episodes. i didnt feel like the first half was dragging much except in a few areas but again it didnt detract from my enjoyment. the last id say 5 or 6 episodes really feel like they were speedrunning which made the ending less satisfying

so when i looked at reviews of the show years ago i saw many people criticizing how the main antagonist died bc it felt anticlimatic and i do agree, especially on first watch. while its not as jarring as the first time when ive rewatched it the way he dies still doesnt feel built up as well as it could have been and i think it could have worked if the pacing for the ending wasnt so rushed (plus the numerous twists during the last couple of episodes made it a bit hard to follow where it was heading and some of what WAS set up i think was lost in that but tbh thats par for the course for kdramas lol)

speaking of the ending, i get why it ended the way that it did with the marriage mandate happening again to make everything come full circle, but character wise i dont think it was the way to go. wondeuk has always expressed even before he lost his memory that he hated being royal and never wanted to live that life because of what his father did to get it. and even knowing that he wasnt wondeuk and was probably a noble at the very least he wanted to be with hongshim in the village or wherever they needed to go. hongshim similarly has already gotten used to being a commoner and has lived that way longer than her former life. even in the epilogue she doesnt really live her life as a noble even if her status has been reinstated. i think it wouldve made more sense if he renounced the throne and chose to live with her in the village.

adding to the last point, if they had stayed in the village together and he abdicated, then his half brother would be the crown prince and the queen wouldnt be on her bullshit even at the end of the show!!! dude literally killed the guy who was threatening you and controlling your husband and you still cant stop trying to fuck him over so your son can be king??? i know the evil manipulative queen is a trope in these but shes so illogical it was a bit annoying which is a shame bc i usually love those characters

the show like,,,,,less than halfway through forgets wondeuks half brother is even a character like why was he even there. theres some indication in the beginning of the show that he likes the crown princess but that doesnt really go anywhere (its only brought up in like 2 scenes at the beginning and in the epilogue wheres shes moved to a remote location with the baby and goes to visit for some reason.....dude yall had maybe 3 lines of dialogue between each other. why are you here) and he even tells wondeuk that he hates him but we never really figure out why bc he doesnt really want to be the crown prince that much (not that i can recall rn) so his only role in the story is to help the queen be a red herring but not be a real character of his own

this is more of what i felt upon rewatch but every time i rewatch it i find it more and more annoying but the palace drama where the queen is spreading rumors and then the guys who support the antagonist make fake fliers about how the kingdom wants her deposed for this in order to manipulate the king is just,,,,,extremely uninteresting upon rewatch. like so much is happening that goes on for so long and its dragged out for way longer than it should be AND it takes time away from the village plot with wondeuk and hongshim aka the actual interesting part. so now i mostly just skip those parts even tho when i first watched the show it was fairly interesting tho i felt it dragged on a bit too long so i wont say this is a huge strike against it or anything

while i knew the brother was going to die bc thats how these kinds of stories work i was still upset fjisjshdsjsh he was a great character and while i think it still makes sense why and its still narratively satisfying imo, i think it would still be satisfying if he lived and he and the princess escaped successfully. i think it would work a little bit better actually bc it would make the antagonists decisions make a little more sense in the finale bc not everything is going to his plan and hes losing more control (plus they deserve to be happy :(( they deserve the happy ending wondeuk and hongshim get too) plus it would still tie in with hongshims motivations for rejecting wondeuk initially before the epilogue

thats the last of the criticism but this isnt a praise so ill leave an idea i had for like a what if scenario ig: so i always wondered what would happen if either the antagonist doesnt get to wondeuk in time during the festival or he gets killed by the people the king sent to attack him and hongshims brother gets there to take them them plus her dad with them into hiding. and the awkward tension that would ensue when wondeuk either figures out her brother is the assassin thats been coming after them or just immediately knows when he sees him come to get them but they both dont want to hurt hongshim by telling her what they know about the other but shes distressed that they obviously dont like each other and this is all happening while theyre running around the woods and trying to find a place they can hide out and her dad is just,,,,,,,so confused the entire time but trying to make everyone get along fjwwqkdhuheuedh idk i could add to this later bc i have so many ideas on how it could play out but ill stop there fisksjbdjssjdjssj

currently reading: Currently, Theory and Practice of La Verdadera Destreza by Alberto Bomprezzi. “Destreza” referring to a very distinctive style of rapier fencing. So far it appears to be a modern summation of the accumulated ideas of historical sources, presented in a dense manner (which is par for the course tbh) and with an expressed interest of presenting Destreza in a manner that fits with modern needs, techniques, environments, etc. Normally this fencing style is presented very rigidly and formally so seeing a “what is important is modern applicability and the historical techniques are methods by which to achieve that” style of presentation is nice! Or: the book’s aim is to help you walk circles around your opponent metaphorically, rather than literally. So to speak. xD I’m curious to see if the book is going to go as in-depth on fencing against other systems (rather than the usual like-versus-like) as its opening has implied.

But on the other hand he didn’t really have anyone in the camp. He barely knew anyone, and definitely wasn’t best friends with Percy and Annabeth (who btw were probably busy with school and they could finally enjoy their relationship and stuff). And we know that Nico has a problem with his “people skills”, as Will nicely put in THO. But I don’t actually think everyone in the CHB disliked him. Why? In BoO Will, Lou, and Cecil all treat him normally. Lou waves to him and blush, Cecil compliments him, Will treats him like a friend. There was not a word about any of these three people from CHB being even a little bit scared of him, otherwise I believe it’d be mentioned in the narrative. I think that Nico’s situation in the CHB after TLO is more complicated story we’ll unfortunately never get to see.

Anyway, during HoO we see Nico mostly with the Seven and in Camp Jupiter. We can see that the Camp Jupiter doesn’t really like him. And the Seven consists of three people who’ve met Nico only in HoO and don’t really like him (Jason, Piper, Leo), one person who has a complicated relationship with him (Percy), two people whose view on Nico I’m not sure about (Annabeth and Frank), and his sister, Hazel. What I’m aiming at is that they’re not a representative group of CHB imho. And then during BoO Will speaks mostly for himself, not for everyone in CHB. But as I mentioned, we see three people from CHB who have no problem with Nico, quite contrary, seem to like him. What’s my point in all of this? We can’t be 100% sure about Nico’s situation in CHB after TLO. But I don’t think it was just his paranoia either, of course not. My theory is that Nico was definitely lonely in CHB after TLO. He had no starting point, no one who’d help him settle there. And he’s not good with people, so that didn’t help him either. After BoO he had someone to help him settle in the camp. And why he changed his mind about staying specifically because of Will? Not because he got called out on paranoia or something. Because contrary to other people he was close to, like Hazel and Jason and Reyna, Will wasn’t going anywhere. He would stay in CHB. For the first time ever Nico had a right to think that maybe, just maybe he won’t be all alone, left to himself at the CHB.

So yeah, I may be wrong, but like… that’s what I think. My personal interpretation. I wanted to say it here because you’re one of the very few people who I’m not scared of here after this whole thing on Solangelo tag.

Like I understand Percy and Nico's complicated relationship, and it was just based on Percy's flaw for loyalty and Nico's internalized homophobia and from percys side they could've had a chance as good friends, but Nico was too traumatised by his long harboured feelings for Percy, and probably won't feel the safest around him. So the people saying Nico would go to Percy for all his problems, well, i would disagree with them.

And sure, Nico called Percy lots of super mean stuff when Percy broke his 'promise' but he was just a ten-year old who lost the only person he had had for years in a new century. Bianca's death was NO ONE'S FAULT.

And the most important point? Nico apologised for every thing he did wrong.

Percy never apologised for spreading rumours among the argo 2 crew (wtf was up with that?)

Frank never apologised for blaming him when his fucking sister's life was on line

And everybody in general never bothered to apologise or even talk to him like, once. They took it for granted that a random guy who was already heavily traumatised by a quest would help them finish it no matter how he's treated.

And I know they weren't best buddies, but if you compare that to how they would've treated a stranger, that says a lot about Nico's social isolation and the seven's internalized ableism (there's a LOT of it, everyone represses their nd traits and nico and leo, who have autism with adhd amd don't repress every thing? They're both shunned. Percy, Leo and Nico never talk about their suicidal tendencies to anyone in hoo).

I went off on a tangent there, but what I meant is that suspicious as you might be, you can't just see a thirteen year old kid who came back from tartarus and five days of suffocation-and now they magically don't have to go to tartarus-and treat him like THAT.

Honestly, Jason mended his ways, and except Annabeth and Hazel, everyone was pretty much sub par or downright shitty to Nico, and he just turned that around and hated himself more for it.

And yeah, i like to think some campers changed their ways after Nico saved their asses but not all of them did. Nico says so himself.

Also, I might not agree with people who say solangelo is ableist, but I definitely don't mean to talk over them and pretend my opinions are better than theirs. Disabled people don't have a voice as it is, and I would be a complete hypocrite if I talked about the seven's internalized ableism and Nico coded as disabled and then tell disabled people they're wrong.

I had someone get really upset over my most recent chapter of “the thread may stretch or tangle but it will never break.”

Specifically, the chapter involves WangXian sexually experimenting with switching.

I tagged the fic for switching, and someone asked me to warn for lwj bottom at the beginning so I did. Despite the warning, someone decided to comment that they were disgusted and it was like being slapped with a completely different pairing. And I had basically wasted their time (this is chapter 18) reading/following the fic, and deserved their anger and the anger of others.

The fic is also tagged top lwj/bottom wwx because that’s typically how they go. I added switching because this was them sexually experimenting.

Lan Wangji was curious.

Wei WuXian’s mental health is rough and he thought it would distract him.

They’re much younger than they were when they got together in canon, and so sexual experimentation is par for the course.

It’s a somewhat well-established fandom trope that lwj wants to get wrecked by yllz!wwx.

I haven't watched any of the Loki episodes yet (I'm procrastinating) but I keep seeing vague stuff about some big chasm between how Tom sees Loki and how apparently a lot of fans see Loki. Could you give me some specifics? Other than Loki mentioning his interest in sexes other than female I've heard nothing that could cause this kind of discourse.

I don't know if I'm the best person to ask, as I know others have articulated it much better than I can, and who may feel more strongly than I do that their Loki and Tom's Loki don't align so much anymore. Not tagging anyone bc of reasons (but feel free to comment/reblog if you wish to talk about it).

But, I do know a decent amount, so I'll proceed to write five thousand words try.

My understanding overall, is that Tom has always spoken very eloquently about Loki as a complex, fractured character who was functioning from a place of deep pain as opposed to any real villainy or evil.

He was never saying any of it as an excuse for Loki's actions but as an explanation of where Loki was coming from and how he ended up in that place to start with. This mostly refers to the 2011-2013 era Loki, before the "reboot." Because so many fans viewed Loki the same way - as complex, as broken, as coming from a place of pain - there was validation, I suppose, in knowing that the actor who played the character (and whose performance was largely responsible for the character being so enigmatic and appealing in the first place) shared this view.

After the reboot with TR, Tom seemed to lean more heavily on the "god of mischief" aspect of Loki - he'd often say that his job was to have fun bc Loki was always mischievously having fun. While Loki had always been funny in a snarky, sardonic kind of way, and the "mischief" he'd get into was always just for fun and relatively harmless, after TR he was more silly-funny or slapstick funny ("funny") and his mischief was framed as a little more malicious (such as using magic to trick and then stab Thor when they were children).

So it seemed like a big departure from the previous Loki that Tom always spoke so eloquently about, and I think it's notable that when promoting TR, Tom didn't really delve into the psychology of Loki much at all when he'd talk about the character - just the "fun." So there was that. At the time, people figured it was bc he had very little control or say in what the director chose to do with his character.

Now, though, Tom has a lot more creative control (although I don't think he actually has all that much, certainly not as much as some people think he does, tbh), but while he's once again talking about Loki's psychology and identity issues and trauma and whatnot as context and backstory, he also still seems to be leaning into the "god of mischief" parts and the silly-funny parts. The show furthermore has yet to address what Loki experienced with Thanos in between Thor 2011 and Avengers, has failed to address his identity crisis after discovering he is Jotun (a throwaway 'I was adopted' line doesn't really count), etc.

So there's a lot that Tom has spoken about in Loki's story that is very much not being included in the series. Furthermore, while Tom discusses Loki's complexity when doing press, he has also said things that imply he has an idea of humiliation being a core aspect of Loki, or that Loki is someone who constantly needs to be knocked down a few pegs, or that he thinks he's profound but actually isn't, etc. I know in the past he's also made comments about Loki's mental health and how Loki might go about recovering from it, but his perspective on that whole area didn't ring true to a lot of Loki fans who also suffer from mental health issues.

So all of these things together, to some fans, makes it seem like Tom's current idea of Loki - whether it's bc he wants to do something new, or has changed as an actor, or whatever the case may be - is still a departure from the 2011-2013 era Loki and, thus, does not align with their own interpretation of Loki. Hence, a chasm appears.

^^ All of this is for context, which I tried to give as objectively as possible. Now, as far as discourse about it goes, I can't speak to that very much. Nobody that I know is angry at Tom or "betrayed" by Tom or feeling anything negative toward Tom as a person. They are, however, feeling that they may need to re-evaluate how much of Tom's interpretation they put stock into as they engage with the character, and kinda where to go from here. But I can't emphasize enough that no one acts like this is Tom's responsibility or that Tom somehow did them dirty. I also can't emphasize enough that there's nothing wrong with Tom's version and he genuinely seems to be enjoying what they've created here, and that's fabulous. There's no wank about that, at least not that I've seen from my fandom corner.

So that's the situation from the tumblr side. However, because Tom has been the "face" of the Loki series all this time, and because he's been hyped up as having so much say and influence and ideas to contribute, a lot of people got the idea that the Loki of the series would be exactly the Loki that Tom wanted to play. And when, inevitably, the show went in directions that people didn't like (my understanding is that this is mostly coming down to shipping nonsense, which I'm not even going to touch), Tom was blamed. And that's where this "discourse" is coming from, as far as I know. I don't have any real first hand facts, but people are saying that Tom's been getting death threats on social media from fans who are outraged about the Sylvie thing, or outraged about how the bisexual component is being handled, or whatever. Since this is pretty much par for the course in fandoms, I believe it.

But it seems like the shipping nonsense has gotten all tangled up in the dissatisfaction in the aspects of Loki's story that aren't being told, and in the difference in Tom's comments about Loki now vs back then, and it just ends up being a recipe for discourse, wank, and drama. So to answer your question, the chasm between Tom's Loki and some fans' Loki is the result of ... *gestures at massive wall of text* this.

So, I get the distaste for Rebels and The Bad Batch (definitely that last one), and I can certainly suggest @agoddamn's series of watching Clone Wars (because wow, I'd forgotten how poor that series could be), but with The Mandalorian, the most I can understand of your dislike of it is how it handles previous characters. Which, yeah, Filoni and his Precious OCs, but other than that, what about it? I mean, the plot/theme seemed simple to me: focusing on the relationship between Din and Grogu.

Ack, I didn't realize that out of context of my past ten years of fannishness and fannish engagement the takeaway from recent critical posts would be "Bedlam hates Star Wars," let alone "Bedlam hates Rebels"!

Look, I love Star Wars -- I genuinely do love Rebels and TCW, I'm very fond of Resistance and most of the films, and there are other parts of the ancillaries (books, comics, games) that I love, like, and/or enjoy. There are other parts of the saga that I dislike, a lot of it that I'm pretty neutral on because I just don't care; there's very little that I outright hate. (There are things that I avoid because I know I would hate them; I won't read Dark Disciple because the old EU Republic/Clone Wars comics from Dark Horse were formative for me and I'm not really over how Quinlan Vos's story line got retconned for TCW and thus the novel, so I don't feel the need to rub my face in it.)

I think, especially with Star Wars, there's a tendency to think that people only complain because they dislike or hate whatever it is they're complaining about it. I don't talk about the parts of Star Wars I actually hate because I frankly don't see the point in talking about the stuff I have no emotional investment in, or where my emotional investment only is distaste -- that's why I'll almost never talk about the ST. (And why I've only talked about the back half of Rebels S4, which I do genuinely hate, a handful of times over the years: I don't want to think about the thing I actually hate.) I talk about Rebels and TCW because those are the parts of Star Wars that I love and because I occasionally want to dig into why there are parts of them that just don't work for me. (And I do realize that if anyone pays attention to what I reblog and don't it may come off as me not liking them particularly; 99% of the time I only reblog TCW or Rebels gifsets immediately after I've rewatched episodes, and I haven't been doing rewatches lately for various reasons.) Critique doesn't mean "I hate it," it means "I want to think about this more on a critical level." It means "I love the puzzle pieces, why does the way they were put together not work for me? How could they have been done differently so that it would have worked for me?" Like I said a few weeks ago, while I don't want to actively add negativity to the fandom, I also don't really want to sit down and shut up if something isn't doing it for me if otherwise I love the thing; I want to figure out why it doesn't work. This is the flip side of "if you can't say anything positive, don't say anything at all" -- I'm not talking to Dave Filoni or the other showrunners (and I would never say any of this to the face of anyone at Lucasfilm), I'm sitting here talking to myself and to my friends about why the puzzle pieces don't quite come together for me. (And the bonus of me putting it on Tumblr is that I can actually find it again, because sometimes I do want to go back and see what I said about XYZ.)

If I'm not actively talking about all the things I love about Rebels or TCW it's because I don't particularly feel the need to justify why Thing works for me, because I already know it works for me. Or because I spent the first two years or so of Rebels and big chunks of TCW doing episode liveblogs, which are on the back end of my "Bedlam watches Rebels" and "Bedlam watches TCW" tags, and I don't feel the need to come back and say "I love the way XYZ happened" six or seven times. Or because I think it would be obvious because I've written something around a million words of fanfic about the two of them. Or because I have three Rebels tattoos and am a Rebels cosplayer, which obviously I don't really talk about on Tumblr but is something that I personally know. I mostly have not talked about The Bad Batch publicly (and only a little privately) because mostly it's not doing much that triggers strong feelings in me one way or another, though I do have the whole "why are these puzzle pieces not working for me, how would I have put them together differently" feel about parts of it.

As for Mando specifically -- look, Mando's fine. I understand why it appeals to a lot of people, even if I am not one of those people. I don't particularly find Grogu appealing either on a character or an aesthetic level. I find that for me personally the show varies wildly in quality from episode to episode; I find it to be a little too clever about itself in how it deals with both the world, its plot, its place in the saga, and its characters in a way drives me up the wall. It hits a couple of really specific things that are huge do not wants for me and some of that is on a shallow note of "I don't like how they do their Twi'lek prosthetics" and some of it is "I don't particularly like the aesthetics" and some of it is a weightier "I'm confused about what the thematic points of the show are because they're all over the map" and yes, some of it is, "I don't like how Mando intersects or does not intersect with other parts of the saga." Or the way that it gets valorized for being live action rather than animated by a lot of the fandom and then gets elevated over the other parts of the saga that I care about the most (TCW and Rebels). I've talked in the past about how Mando genuinely made me feel gaslit, even if that was no one's intention and thus was not actually gaslighting; it just managed to hit on my specific issues. I don't talk about Mando that much because mostly I just don't care and when I do talk about it it's because it managed to trip into something I do care about.

And if I sound particularly cranky right now, it's because every time I say something critical and it starts making tracks out of my usual circles, someone comes in to go "wow! you must hate Star Wars!" or "wow! you care a lot about [aesthetic choice]! why would you care about that!" or "wow! you're an idiot for thinking XYZ would happen/not happen!" or variations thereof. I've been in fandom for twenty years. I've been in this fandom since George W. Bush was president. I know how it goes. I'm going to reiterate the post I made after the Mando finale:

in any expanded canon, people are going to have different deal-breakers on where they can suspend their disbelief and it’s not a judgment on you and yours if theirs is different than yours. nor does it automatically say something bad about them! it just means y’all have different priorities and that’s fine! neither one of you should be jumping down each other’s throat because their line in the sand is “this contradicts something in previous canon” and yours is “the CGI is unconvincing.”

I feel like I’ve been seeing a lot of condescension (rather than hostility, which tbh is par for the course in SW so I just tune it out) recently and like…people can have different priorities. it’s fine. they’re not stupid for having their priority be “I don’t like the prosthetics” when your priority is “character A was mean to character B.” don’t worry, Lucasfilm isn’t listening to any of us.

my simple thoughts? it's entertaining if only because it butchered the stage show so badly in an attempt to idk modernize it? Well, modernization is one part of it I think. The other part I'll go into below lol. I don't necessarily hate some of the more modern renditions of the songs (mostly the ensemble sets like Jellicle Song for Jellicle Cats) but then others are just... so poorly done it's insulting.

I've said this at the end of this whole rant too but I'm gonna put it up here in case people don't (justifiably) wanna see me go on and on about it:

The movie wasn't made for fans of the musical. It was made to make money and I believe they choose, at least partially, to do that through making it the weirdest and worst possible adaptation they could so that people would want to go see the train wreck. Which, really, worked! It was all people could talk about for a good while so like... Goal achieved, I guess.

A MUCH MORE COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS UNDER THE CUT cuz i don't wanna. flood your dash with... this

ALRIGHT SO. Most of my friends know I'm actually a huge fan of new adaptations of things. I love remakes (provided the people making it are coming at it with some form of heart and not just... cash grabbing which is more often the case) I love seeing other peoples interpretations of characters, or changing settings. It's one of the reasons I like American comics so much, getting to see different writers takes is fascinating.

I think musical movies can be wonderful ways to introduce people to a stage show that might have been unavailable to them otherwise! Chicago, for example, is one of the BEST musical to movie adaptations in my opinion. It kept the heart of the show, it's funny and the song numbers are done really well.

There are of course other famous examples, such as Grease or Bye Bye Birdie. Hairspray was also a wonderful take. These are simply off the top of my head, there are of course more.

CATS in particular has a history. If you go through my CATS tag you may see a few posts from @catsnonreplica which posts photos from non broadway productions of CATS! It's a fascinating read and I love, love, love looking at the other interpretations of the characters! CATS is a musical full of fun and wonderful characters if you take the time to see past the ridiculousness haha and the Korean and Japanese runs of CATS especially have some of my favourites.

How does this relate to the movie, I hear you say well. As you might has noticed the movie's interpretations of the characters is........ lackluster at best and downright uncanny valley at best.

CATS is, at its core, a ridiculous thing. I will fully admit that! But it's fun, it's entertaining and if you pay a little attention you can actually get the plot. (Honestly I don't understand when people complain it has no plot but that's a whole other rant for another day)

The movie was... obsessed with this idea of like... semi realism? Like obviously, as a fan, I think they should have leaned into the over the top character designs but instead we got...w ell:

Demeter left and Bomba right. Demeter was actually cut! From the movie which is. upsetting lmao.

Macavity is one of the worst offenders for me:

Macavity was... I wish I could know what the hell they were thinking there cuz it's even in his song? Ginger cat??? THAT IS NOT... A GINGER CAT...... but I digress. I would show more examples but I think you get the point.

So. We've butchered the characters appearances. Okay that's fine but what about their personalities?

There's... there's a lot to unpack here. Just for context: the Jellicle Ball happens once a year and the Jellicle leader chooses a single cat to be reborn into a new life. In the stage play all the cats who are nominated for this honour are on the older side (Jenny-Any-Dots, Bustopher Jones, Skimbleshanks, Gus The Theatre Cat, and eventually Grizzabella) AND are always nominated by another cat. Not themself, unlike the movie where they all seem to nominate themselves.

Jenny-Any-Dots went from a doting grandmother figure who's celebrated for her selfless volunteering and tireless work into a conceited, vain younger cat who is obsessed with fame.

It's an incredibly strange dichotomy. I don't doubt some of it isn't the result of the uh people playing the characters honestly. I do think some of them did the best they could! I don't really blame Jason Derulo, for example, for Tugger. And honestly, Tugger was probably closest to his stage version (while being a trouble maker, he's shown to show Deuteronomy an immense amount of respect)

Speaking of Tugger! This will bring us to one of the biggest grievances with the movie and that is how they handled Mr Mistoffelees.

So... Ugh. So. We have Victoria as the pov character, which imo is like whatever in the grand scheme of things, and then we have Misto who they have decided will be get live interest cuz... Of course. Misto is shown throughout the musical to be awkward, unsure of himself and well. Really, kinda incompetent. Which is Wild cuz in the stage show he might be aloof but he's fairly confident in his powers.

So, Old Deuts gets kidnapped. In the stage show Tugger is the one to bring Misto forward! It's really quite sweet, imo, and I'm showing myself as a Tuggoffelees shipper here, but again Tugger is previously shown to be pretty conceited but then here he is boosting and hyping up Misto to bring Deuteronomy back. My friends and I have lovingly dubbed this the boyfriend hype song.

SOMEHOW. The movie manages to make this, easily, the MOST BORING number in the whole thing. Which, again, WILD. Misto awkwardly stumbles through his whole song, which again is... Boasting of his supreme magical powers which movie Misto clearly. Does not have or believe to have. The song, to me, feels super awkward and unnecessarily drawn out in the movie which sucks cuz it's one of my favourites in the show.

The declawing (heh) of Mr Mistoffelees actually reminds me strongly of how they changed Gaston in the live action Beauty and the Beast movie. He's gone from a beloved figure in the animated movie to someone so disliked in the town that Le Fou has to pay people off to say nice things about him. It's just. Wild character choices were made!!

Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat is probably my favourite in movie non ensemble number. It feels the most... Genuine? Compared to the other nomination songs.

Other problems include but are not limited to:

The inconsistent size scale of the CATS which throws me off constantly.

The weirdly overt sexual overtones added to MANY of the songs (Jenny and Bustopher being the worst)

This is just a personal gripe and opinion but I don't like that they used the UK version of Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer. The American version is both better known and tbh way more fun. Teazer's giggle? Adds ten years to my life every time.

Victoria's added solo song, Beautiful Ghosts, while I like the song as a song it doesn't fit the style of message of the musical. In the movie she's singing directly to Grizzabella who's being an outcast for years that she should be grateful she even has memories of being part of the tribe?? What?? But I know they had to add an original song to be able to be nominated for awards in like the Grammys n shit (which is why all musical movies will have an original song, fun fact!!) kinda funny they went to the effort though considering........... I don't think anyone could have genuinely believed CATS 2019 was gonna win anything but golden rhaspberries.

Movie Mr Mistoffelees has made repeated appearances as my sleep paralysis demon

God I've written... So much. You probably get it by now haha. Like I said at the beginning, I try to go into any adaptation with an open mind but... Let's be honest, this movie wasn't marketed to people who are fans of the musical.

It was marketed, and made, to make money. And they choose to do that through, I think, intentionally making the worst possible version ever. Bad press is still press and the more outrageous people said the movie was the more people wanted to go see exactly what kind of train wreck it was.

Which is a disservice to the stage show, honestly, and all the people who've worked on it over the years.

But what can we do, right?

And besides all that, I do... Still own the movie version and I do still rewatch it on occasion. It is entertaining even if it's in a train wreck kind of way. I usually end up watching the 1998 version, then 2019 and then various tour runs that are on YouTube. (I highly recommend the 2016 tour, it's very good)

So in conclusion. It's fun (?) to watch. I enjoy picking things apart and doing analysis (if you couldn't tell!) so like... I don't hate it?

It did what it set out to do, I guess, and I can't fault it for that but. It's not a fair metre with which to judge the stage show imo. But I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, haha.

Jazz hands. I'm more than happy to elaborate or just chat about CATS if anyone wants! I grew up listening to the Broadway CD since I was a toddler so it's been! A very long standing obsession haha. Probably the only other thing on par with CATS is my obsession with Jurassic Park which I've also been a fan of since I was 3 (but that's a whole story in and of itself)

A/N: Okay so this is my first Topper request and tbh kind of nervous to post this lol. I had to come up with a cute date and like bro, I’ve never been on a date before so I had NO clue what I was doing but whatever.

Request: I was wondering if you could maybe write a smut fluff (or just fluff if you're not comfortable with smut) of y/n and a post-redemption Topper after their first time together and like the cute date that goes beforehand maybe pretty please?😊 I just think that would be very adorable.

Summary: You and Topper had found solace in each other after John B’s and Sarah’s disappearance. After months of hanging out together, it’s your first date. You’re nervous and excited, and you can’t believe how the date ends (sorry I suck at summaries)

Warnings: FLUFF at first and then SMUT (but it’s vanilla mostly lol). Loss of virginity and fingering. Also, I think swearing. THIS IS A POST REDEMPTION TOPPER FIC SO HAVE THIS INFORMATION IN MIND WHEN READING

FIRSTS

After John B and Sarah disappeared, everybody’s world seemed to fall apart. 

This included yours, mainly because you had secretly been in love with John B your whole life. You had grown up together, which was something given due to the fact that you were next-door neighbors. JJ had tagged along to your friendship soon enough, and then Pope and Kie. 

So, yes, the night they went missing and were presumed dead, you thought it was the end of your life. John B, your best friend and the boy you had fallen in love with, was gone.

The months after their disappearance the Pogues fell apart. We didn’t know how to be together without John B. We didn’t know what our friendship meant without John B. We didn’t know ourselves without John B.

And so you returned to being a loner just as you had been when you were small, before you met John. During those lonely months, you would lounge around the beach and the forest surrounding your house.

Being alone was peaceful but hurtful at the same time. You missed having people around you, and you missed sharing laughs and jokes with the Pogues. However, you liked how silent it was, and how you didn’t have to ignore JJ’s dirty innuendos or Kie’s rants about the planet. 

One day, about six months after your friends’ disappearance, your peaceful bubble was broken. Topper stumbled upon your frame, perched on top of a fallen tree, on the beach. You hadn’t heard him at first, too focused on the crashing of the waves upon the sand. But then he spoke. 

“Hey,” he muttered softly. Startled, you sat up, almost falling from the trunk you were laid upon. You turned your eyes towards Topper and glared, not really liking him. However, your eyes softened when you realized he looked eerily similar to you. His eyes were sunken and surrounded by dark bags while his skin was pale. His frosted tips were darker than usual, indicating that he hadn’t been out much. 

“Hey,” you muttered uncomfortably. Your voice sounded hoarse and scratchy, which surprised you. You hadn’t spoken to someone in so long that you had forgotten what your voice sounded like. 

Topper took a seat beside you, jumping onto the tree trunk. Your legs were down towards the ground, while your hands were right before your pelvic bone. You noticed you were twiddling your thumbs, which you normally did around John B when you were nervous. Was Topper making you nervous?

You forced your fingers to stay still.

“You look just as bad as me,” he muttered out with a soft smile, finding your pain humorous. 

You nodded, biting your lips. You didn’t know what to say or how to reply. 

“Do you think they’re alive?”

You shook your head. Topper sighed at your answer. “Yeah, me neither.”

You both stayed silent for a while, basking in each other’s presence. It was weird to be around someone again, especially since that someone was Topper. It was weird because you didn’t hate him as the rest of friends did. You found him to simply be troubled. He had been cheated on by Sarah, and he had been trying to deal with those feelings when she had disappeared. You also knew from Kie (who you had spoken to about four months ago) that Topper had helped them escape from the burning church the night before they disappeared. 

You thought Topper was misunderstood. Much like you felt right now.

“Hey,” you spoke out softly. “I’m sorry about the shit you were put through. From Sarah and from us.”

Topper nodded. “I probably deserved it.”

You shook your head. He really didn’t deserve it. “I’m still sorry.”

You both fell silent again. Sharing your pain with Topper was oddly comforting, even if you weren’t speaking. 

Soon enough, you found yourself meeting Topper at the beach every day. He was a lot more fun than you had ever imagined him to be, and you felt that, little by little, you were helping each other be okay again. He began to invite you to his house and his boat and you couldn’t help but agree to go along, wanting to spend as much time with him as possible. 

During the sunset of one of your many days together he kissed you. You hadn’t been speaking much, but he had gained your attention which caused you to look into his eyes. He was different than when you had seen him for the first time all those months ago on the beach. His hair was frosted again and his skin was tan and he looked happy. You felt you had changed in a similar way to him as well. 

And so he leaned forward and he kissed you. And it was everything you had ever felt for John B and so much more. He was gentle and soft and kind and it was a perfect first kiss. You wouldn’t have changed a thing about it. 

Exactly two days later, Topper asked you out on a date. You, of course, had to say yes. 

Which brought you to where you were now. Nervous and with no idea as to what to wear. You didn’t have nice clothes and you didn’t think anything would be up to par with where Topper was going to take you. 

You were startled by your phone ringing. You reached out to it and smiled at Topper’s name across the screen before panicking. 

“You’re here already? I thought you said five!” you exclaimed nervously.

Topper laughed. “No, no. I just had to let you know that you shouldn’t worry about your clothes. I’m not taking you anywhere that’s too Kooky yet.”

“What do you mean?” you voiced out. You thought you were going to a fancy restaurant. 

“Just get dressed, Y/N,” Topper stressed out. “And don’t worry about what you need to wear. You look great in everything.”

And then he hung up. His help had made you decide that you were going to wear the exact same outfit in which you had met him (which was one of your favorite outfits because it made your butt look good). After putting all of your clothes on, you moved towards your bathroom, brushing your hair and your teeth. Then you picked up what was left of your mother’s makeup.

Your mother had died two years ago, and you had never shown much interest in makeup. At lost not as much as she did. You never got the chance to learn how to do your makeup as your mother would do hers, and now that she had passed away and you actually wanted to learn, but you didn’t have anyone to teach you. You wanted to feel closer to your mother and know how to do your makeup, but that was a battle for another time. For now, you only coated your eyelashes in mascara (after curling them, of course. You weren’t that lost).

Satisfied with how you looked, you turned towards your front door and checked the time on your phone. It wasn’t five yet. 

Your nerves were consuming you. You had never been on a date before and you had no idea what to expect. All you wanted was for it to be perfect. 

Time seemed to be ticking by a lot slower than you were used to, and your heart was beating so fast inside of your chest that you thought you might have a heart attack. You had nothing to distract yourself, and all you wanted was to not be nervous. That was obviously impossible.

You heard a car pull up outside, and you ran out towards the door. Flinging it open, you saw Topper’s car, just as he was hopping out of the driver’s seat. In his hands was a single sunflower, which made you smile. You went out to reach him, pulling him into a hug and breathing in his scent. He smelled of his cologne. 

“Hi,” you said once you had pulled away from him. He smiled down at you and quickly pecked your lips. 

“Hey,” he removed his hands from your body and gave you the flower in his hand. He smiled as you took it. You grabbed onto his hand and dragged him inside with you, where you placed the flower into a tall glass. You didn’t own any vases.

With that, you both went outside and hopped into his car. Revving his engine, you took off down the street. 

“Where are you going?” you asked impatiently and giddily, ready to have your first date. Your nerves had died down a little now that your hand was in Topper’s.

“I can’t tell you. I just know you’re going to like it.”

You pouted at him, causing him to laugh a little. Instead of forcing it out of him, you tuned towards your window and opened it, letting the breeze drift through your hair. You closed your eyes.

You hadn’t realized that you had arrived until Topper squeezed your hand. Opening your hand and turning towards the building in front of you, you read ‘Go-Kart Center’.

“No way!” you said, turning towards Topper and hugging him. You had mentioned you had never gone Go-Karting a couple of months ago, and you had expressed that it was something you really wanted to try. 

“You like it?” Topper asked while unlocking the car and pushing his door open. 

“I love it!” you spoke out, excited to finally try something new. Topper was happy that he had made you smile the way you were smiling. He loved that he was the one that made your day brighter because he felt like you did the same for him. He loved that he could be the one to 

He grabbed onto your hand and dragged you into the building and up to the front counter, paying for fifteen rounds around the pit. 

After that, you moved towards the helmets, placing a hair net over your head before fastening them on. You followed the instructions given by the workers of the pit to sit in the first two carts, and revving your engines. Once on the start line, you and Topper raced off.

You turned towards the left twice before passing under a bridge, speeding past Topper and turning to the right, where you pressed your foot down on the accelerator. The road between the stacked wheels went straight for about fifty feet and then turned towards the right. Before you was the bridge you had passed under just a few moments ago, which you passed quickly before landing at its other side. Turning towards the right you noticed a sharp left turn that would leave you at the beginning of the track. You pressed your foot on the accelerator again, not wanting Topper to pass you.

Around and around the pit you went, crashing into the wheels on the side of the tracks and passing each other. Your laughs and screams of joy could be heard through the whole pit, and the workers covered their ears. You didn’t care.

Once you both finished, you headed towards the counter to receive your stats sheets.

“Looks like I beat you by 0.32 seconds, Y/N,” Topper exclaimed, puffing his chest out a bit. You pouted, causing him to wrap his hands around your body and kiss the top of your head. 

You looked down at the stat sheet and smiled. “I had the fastest lap speed, though!”

Topper nodded and laughed, grabbing onto the pieces of paper and turning you towards the ramp in the back of the room that led to the second floor of the vicinity. Once you arrived at the top you noticed a small bar-like restaurant that served fries and drinks.

You and Topper took a seat at the bar and ordered some fries and two glasses of coke. Then you turned towards each other, a giddy smile on your lips and a soft one on his. 

“Did you like it?” he asked you, nervous at what you would answer. He knew what you would say, but he was still nervous.

You nodded your head vigorously while munching on a couple of fries. He smiled at you, glad about the results that appeared on your face.

Soon after this, you left the building and hopped back into Topper’s car. The drive back to your house was quiet, but your hands were never apart. The smile on your face seemed to be etched there permanently.

Topper pulled up outside of your house and a smirk crossed over your face when you realized that your father was not home. Turning towards Topper, you asked, “Do you want to come inside for a bit?”

He nodded, stepping out of the car and going around to your side. You walked towards the door together and opened it, pulling Topper inside. You led him to the couch where you plopped down and smiled at him. 

“What?” he asked you. You shook your head in disbelief at how lucky you were.

“Nothing,” you muttered. “I’m just so lucky to have you.”

You pressed your lips to his, smiling a little into it. His hands came around to hold your waist and your hands moved against his body as well. One was wrapped behind the back of his neck and the other was pressed flat against his chest.

What had started out as soft and innocent quickly became more fast-paced and desperate. You pushed your body closer to him, even though that was probably impossible, and opened your mouth to let his tongue enter it. Your fingers fumbled a little trying to open his button-up shirt, nervous at what you had in mind. 

You were ready. You wanted to have sex with him and lose your virginity to him. He had been everything to you ever since you had bumped into each other at the beach all those months ago, and you were glad to be giving in to him. 

You opened his shirt and pushed it down his shoulders while his hands moved to tug you onto his lap, straddling him. Your hands pressed against his skin before you disconnected your mouth from his and moved down towards his neck. You weren’t really sure what you were doing so you followed your instincts. You smirked when you heard him moan, meaning you were doing things right. 

Topper’s hands had left your waist and began to slip under your shirt and towards the middle of your back. The pressure near your ribs made you pull back from him, and you noticed the question he was asking with his eyes. As a response, you removed your shirt and tossed it near his. His orbs moved down to your chest, where your bra was the only thing keeping you covered. Feeling a bit self-conscious you moved towards him again, kissing his lips and making his hands fall over your body again. They snaked around you and slithered up and down until they finally came to rest on your breasts. He squeezed them softly, earning a soft gasp from you. They stayed there, kneading them softly until the moved towards your back again, unclasping your last piece of clothing in your torso. 

Topper looked at you, making sure this was all okay. You nodded and let the bra slide down your arms before you crossed your arms over your body. 

“No,” Topper whispered. “You’re beautiful.”

As gently as he could he removed your hands from across your body and stared in awe at what was before him. Leaning down he attached his mouth to your nipple making you moan and throw your head back. Raking your fingers through his hair, you brought him up to your lips to kiss him shortly before letting his mouth wander across your body. His hands were now at the waistband of your shorts in the middle of your back. You felt yourself become wet with anticipation at what you wanted to do, but you felt something nagging in your insides.

Pulling away, you blurted, “I’m a virgin.”

Topper moved back, eyes wide. He didn’t know what to do. Did you want him to stop? You probably did. “That’s okay. I can wait.”

You shook your head at his misunderstanding. “No, Topper. I want to, but I wanted to let you know, too.”

Topper nodded, smiling at the fact that you trusted him enough to take this from you. “Okay,” he muttered before kissing you again. He returned to the slow pace from before, softly making his way to your neck and placing a hand at the waistband of your shorts.

“I’m going to take this off. Is that okay?”

You nodded your head as he unbuttoned your shorts. Topper removed you from his body so that he could slide them down your legs, marveling at how wet you looked through your panties. He hooked his fingers around your underwear, pressing a kiss right above them and staring up at you. You nodded again, nervous.

He slid them off your body and almost began to salivate at what he saw. He pressed you down onto his body again before saying, “Don’t you want to move to your bed?”

You bit your lip. He stood up, his hands on your waist, and he led you to where he thought your bedroom was. Once he was there he closed the door and pressed you against it. He pushed himself close to you and kissed you again. Your hands roamed his body, across his shoulders, back, abs, everything. You couldn’t get enough of him.

His hands began to travel south until they motioned your legs to open a little. He pulled away from you again, but this time, just enough so he could press his forehead to your own. “I’m going to have to help you before to can take me. Is that fine?”

You nodded eagerly, wanting him to do something - anything - to your body. With your confirmation, he wasted no time to kiss your neck again and slip a finger between your folds. The hickeys he was leaving were going to surely be prominent tomorrow, and his fingers circling around your clit made you shiver. You moaned out loud, and you felt Topper smirk against your skin. He then slipped a finger into you, bringing a little of pain along with the pleasure. You winced a bit but relaxed when your body had accommodated to its size. Topper curled it just a bit so that it hit a spot that made you expel lewd noises from within. He added another finger, going through the same process as before. You would wince a little at first but the grow used to the feeling and enjoy it. He was pumping them into you softly, but he was quickly gaining speed and strength in each thrust. 

You felt your insides tense, almost as if there was something accumulating itself right where Topper’s fingers were hitting. You moaned out loudly, feeling your body release around his fingers. Your legs trembled and shook as Topper held you up, smiling down at you. He kissed you and removed his fingers from your body. He licked your juices off.

“God, you taste good. But we’ll leave that for another time.”

Still hilding your trembling body he moved you towards the bed, where he softly placed you down and shook his shorts off. Through his boxers, you could see how big he was, and you felt nervous again.

Noticing the panicky look in your eyes, Topper leaned down and gave you a short, soft, and sweet kiss. 

“You’ll be fine. And we’ll stop if you want to.”

You nodded, understanding what he wanted to say. Topper removed his boxers, letting his member spring out. You tried to calm your breathing at the anticipation of what was to come.

“You have a condom, right?” you asked him. Topper froze before shaking his head. You smiled at him, knowing that this was a possibility and instructed him to go into your bathroom and open the first drawer.

You had condoms because your dad had bought them for you. It had been awkward and weird, but now you were grateful he was so adamant about you being protected at all times.

Topper cam back into the room, rolling the condom onto his penis. He laid on top off you, holding your right hand in his left and caressing your waist with his other free one. He smiled and kissed you before pulling away. His thumbs rubbed circles into your body. “You ready?”

You nodded at him. Topper reached down and lined himself before pulling into you as gently as he could. The wince that escaped your lips pained him and the tears that were surrounding your eyes made him almost want to stop. However, he felt you pushing him into yourself. He remained still, waiting for you to adjust.

“Okay,” you whispered out. “You can move now.”

And so Topper did. Slowly at first and then he began to gain speed once he heard you moan. He smiled at the fact that you were enjoying this just as much as he was, and he pushed into you a little harsher than before. He felt himself come closer o the edge, and staring down at you, he realized that you were as well. Your eyes were rolled back a little and your mouth was open, letting mewls escape every once in a while from your boy. Topper’s grunts fell into perfect harmony with them, just like the noise of his body slapping against yours. 

“Top, I’m - I -” you tried to speak, but the pleasure was too much. You were clenching around him, giving him the idea that you were about to come undone. 

And you did. Your last final moan was louder than before and Topper followed you soon after, his orgasm making him stop his movements and bury himself deep inside you.

His hand was still clenching yours when he fell on top of you, your pants now filling the air. After a few moments, Topper pulled out of you and discarded the condom in your bathroom. When he went back to your room he noticed you in the same spot, panting and with an astonishing facial expression. 

“Was I that good?” he joked cockily. He didn’t expect you to reply, but you nodded your head.

He laughed a little at your reaction, causing you to smile and turn to look at him. You grabbed his arms and pulled him towards your body, before snuggling into him. Topper wrapped himself around you and tugged the covers over your bodies. 

“Thank you,” you muttered, grateful at everything the boy had given - and taken - from you recently. He kissed the top of your head in reply, noticing how sleepy and rained you looked from your previous activities. 

Topper smiled, watching you drift away before closing his own eyes. He was glad he got be all of your firsts and more glad at the fact that, even if you weren’t his firsts, he felt even better than when they had actually happened.

So a lot of my first lines aren’t very long, and I really like telling my readers where exactly the characters are. I think my favorite is probably the first line of “Now That the Magic’s Gone,” because it feels very him. I do like how “I Know That I Don’t Wanna Be Out to Drift” takes a sharp turn into the weird, though.

1. Untitled WIP (Wandersong, unpublished 2021) The flight home was long enough that, despite Miriam's unease, by the time they had made it to her house, the worst of her anxiety had been replaced by a heavy blanket of exhausted resignation.

2.  Echoing Notes (Wandersong 2020) The world was ending, until it wasn’t. The sun rose again, against all odds, casting its beams of light across an improbable planet, bathing its inhabitants in the most welcome daybreak.

4. OSTINATI (Wandersong, unpublished 2020)  An unfamiliar face greeted the Bard as they made their way up the hill towards Langtree Village.

Patterns, hm... Well, I certainly like to go for either a highly descriptive line that establishes the scenario right away, or a short and catchy line that’s intriguing enough to make you want to read the next line, which is then usually the highly descriptive line. Generally speaking I do favour a compact writing style that fits as much information as possible into as few words as possible in each sentence, so it’s not surprising my opening lines are like that too.

I’m often tempted to open with a line of dialogue, but I’ve heard that’s offputting, so I try to avoid it. Still, there are some cases when that works best, usually when the dialogue itself establishes some important information right away. (In the case of #16, that’s an entirely dialogue-only piece, so the first line establishes it’s Aziraphale who speaks first.)

It’s kind of hard to pick a favourite because I’m very fond of all of these for different reasons. For example, 4 looks very plain, but leads into scenario where the “unfamiliar face” is quickly established to be someone the Bard should know, but doesn’t. And then later the same line gets repeated again in different contexts, developing the theme further. I love 9 because not only does it quickly locate where in the timeline this canon divergence begins, it also establishes a metaphor that, when combined with the next two lines, becomes relevant to the entire fic. 12 and 14 were both jokes I wrote to myself to make myself laugh and fell in love with especially as I developed the jokes further. 17 and 18 make a pair.... except I never actually published 17 so the joke is lost too RIP

Honestly I think the main takeaway here is I should actually finish my WIPs sometime lmao
