You know, we see a lot of Danny absolutely wrecking the Joker but what if he didn't? What if what happened with Freakshow still lingers? What if Danny post adoption is absolutely terrified of this clown and Joker seeing that this boy has a worse reaction to him compared to most people and eats it up?
I wanna see a Joker who makes it his life mission to traumatize the newest Wayne. A batfam who's terrified the Clown Prince of Crime will hurt yet another family member. A Danny who sees Joker and instantly thinks of what might happen if he loses control again. Of who he might hurt this time.

Hey girl! Before I ask, I just wanted to say I love your blog-especially your taste in movies! I've watched so many good movies from you! I noticed you kind of gravitate more towards campy, trailer park-esque vibes, which is something I also adore. I was wondering if you could think of any movies that have that specific vibe, that also fit with coquette/faunlet vibes. Thanks! And once again, love your blog!
Hi! Thank you so much for sending me this ask and for supporting my blog, I really appreciate it ♡
I try to watch lots of films that relate to the coquette/faunlet lifestyle and I'm constantly discovering new movies (@coquette-club is currently posting about lots of great films to check out)!
I love campy, trailer park/motel/road trip type films because that sort of lifestyle has always been interesting to me and I have seen many great films over the years that feature these motifs so here's my little list for you ♡
Tumblr media Tumblr media
American Honey (2016)
Star is a young girl living in poverty with her dysfunctional family until she meets a charming stranger in a supermarket. They go on a road trip selling magazines door-to-door and meet many interesting people along the way. It's a beautiful film about growing up, first love, identity and features mainly unknown actors and improvised lines to feel even more gritty and real. Sasha Lane is incredible in this film and I adore her ♡
Tumblr media
Black Snake Moan (2006)
Christina Ricci plays a young woman who is lost in life and suffers from nymphomania and Samuel L Jackson's character Lazarus attempts to cure her by imprisoning her with a chain around her waist. It's a seriously weird film and you've probably seen the clips of Ricci dancing with the chain, but it's also pretty enjoyable and features some really awesome blues music, southern sleaze and skimpy coquette outfits ♡
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hick (2011)
This one is a classic in the coquette world, Luli has become an icon to us with her dreams of running away to find fun in Las Vegas after being abandoned by her family at 13 years old. She hitches a ride with a cowboy and sleeps in a trailer, does cocaine and robs a convenience store (and that's just the first act). It's a super grimy film and I enjoyed the visuals too ♡
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ripe (1996)
Two orphaned sisters flee a car wreck and hitch a ride to a dilapidated army camp, where they stay with the grumpy caretaker and cause chaos wherever they go. It's really hard to find but worth the watch if you can, the aesthetics are so sickly sweet and feel just like Video Games by Lana Del Rey mixed with the warmth of a summer day ♡
A few miscellaneous:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Where the Heart is (2000) // Bones and All (2022)
~ Natalie Portman's character lives in a trailer park and is abandoned pregnant by her boyfriend in a wallmart
~ Road trip love story, our main characters steal and squat in various trailers, farms and other lodgings
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Florida Project (2017) // Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999)
~ A single mother lives in a motel in Florida
~ Teen beauty pagent star lives with her mother in a trailer
I really hope this is helpful! There are probably others but this is all I can think of for now, and there are many more similar to this that I haven't yet seen! Thanks again for the ask ♡

Getting stuff out of my system so maybe I can sleep. So obviously I loved The Giggle and loved the Toymaker, but as a Thoschei shipper I can't express how important it is to me how impersonal the Toymaker was about the whole thing and while my dreams of old men making out have not been realied, the ghost of the Master hanging over the episode really emphasised that. Like, welcome home cheater jokes are great and I was getting lowkey irritated by how both the fans and the writers were making ALL of the Master's actions about the Doctor.
But I was also worried that with a campy game loving villain that would also have a love hate obsession with and resentment for the Doctor, RTD would basically say behold the Master only +++ this obviously had nothing to do with CC giving the Doctor a literal speech about being better than the Master introducing a Dia de los Muertos villain that has soooo much history with the Doctor but is also soooo very powerful and then reiterating that the Master hates themself and only wants to be the Doctor but can't because of essentialism posing as existentialism. nothing whatsoever.
But no. Again, I am a bit tired of the Master being presented mainly as not-Doctor and I do think that if Ten didn't timelock the Tardis, they wouldn't have chosen their pet planet specifically, but compare Saxon's No. This is my turn. Revenge. Best. Served. Hot. to the Toymaker's cold Best of three. Compare the Master drawing pleasure from playing Satan the accuser about humans-turned-toclafane to the Doctor specifically because it's their pet species to the Toymaker being himself attracted to humans because of their nature sth sth Johan Huizinga sth sth homo ludens and play as the foundation of culture sth sth 2001: SO with bone and ball sth sth murder as kickstarter of culture and play as kickstarter of culture. Look at Ten's addendum of If that's what you want to the offer he makes the Master in s3, emphasising that he wants to understand what is it that the latter is after, and at Fourteen's certainty that the Toymaker really is only after games.
Don't get me wrong, I'm far from throwing monogamy at either the Doctor or the Master and they probably both made out with the Toymaker, both individually and menage a trois. But if after literal weeks of holding my breath for an actual cameo I leave the episode fully sated after a gold tooth and laughing sounds and people from outside my Davy Jones' Locker stuck ghost ship notice it too, then I'd say RTD did some really good job hanging the Master's ghost over the story. And that was not just to fan serve. It also made a point about the differences between those relationships.

opinion dump on saltburn and the public response to it bcs my opinions r the most valid and superior
this is mainly geared towards the response on tiktok, saying u were undisturbed by the bathtub scene or grave scene doesn’t make u superior or cooler it actually doesn’t mean shit yall r giving “im so mysterious and misunderstood” energy it’s actually embarrassing tbh this has the same energy as thinking ur mental illness is a personality trait and inherently makes u cooler and more interesting than the average person REALITY CHECK it doesn’t
the period sex scene being placed in the same category of “disturbing-ness” on social media as the grave and bathtub scene just goes to show how much society hates women and their bodies the period stigma is crazy it’s for sure a personal preference no hate if u think eating someone out when they’re on their period is weird or maybe unhygienic but to compare it to borderline necrophilia and whatever vile pathetic shit the bathtub scene was is just pure misogyny I said what I mf said
I love emerald fennel and i’m so dissapointed in her I thought this movie would’ve been better I feel like she had everything going for her the plot was incredible the aesthetics were so cool the cast was astounding and yet…
ok elaboration on my last point basically the film lacked any intelligence or nuance plot wise and storytelling wise don’t get me wrong the film is full of insane references and deep sociopolitical metaphors however the ending was shit the idea that this was oliver’s plan all along has the same energy as when ur in 2nd grade and u end ur creative writing piece with “and it was all a dream” and so many fucking things don’t fit in with the ending like they never explain to what extent was this his plan like did he intend to kill them ? pick them off one by one ? wait years till he could get to elspeth ? and why are his issues with his family never explained why is he the way he is what made him so obsessive what made him a pathological liar ????? there r just too many loose ends and unfortunately not in a “open ending audience interpretation” way but in a bad writing kinda way :/
THE FASHION !!! why was it so mid I was superrrrr excited to see a film set in 06/07 but the fashion was majorly lacking elspeth is mother her costumes ate of course but the rest of the cast and extras were so mid there were a few exceptions here and there but there’s so much to explore in terms of fashion in this time period yet the costumes weren’t great venetia’s outfits hurt my soul she could’ve been such a cool character think indie sleaze vibes (ik this wasn’t a thing back then but something similar rather than the glittery bullshit she’d have on) farleigh also could’ve served cunt but was painfully lukewarm
the movie left SO MUCH to be desired it actually hurts if only they could’ve leaned into the campy vibes upped the ante on the fashion and had much better writing </3

HELENA ZHAO IS DEAD A gothic (eventually) coming-of-age story.
Most Recent / From the Beginning
Want more? Find extras and pre-story content here.
Listen, I couldn't come up with an attention-grabbing but not spoilery title, so I just went for it. Anyway, if you've been following me long enough, you might remember Helena's true origins, which I had no idea at the time would quickly spiral into a full-blown life story I just had to tell. This is part one and basically follows her journey to becoming that version of herself. Part two, if we ever make it there, is what happens after.
I wanted to do something a bit darker than usual, so fair warning that there will be some horror elements and lots of drama. I had fun making this graphic kind of campy, but the story will be more low-key at first until the vampires show up. I think the format is mainly going to be visual with occasional dialogue because writing too much slows me down. It's definitely going to evolve over time, but I'm excited to see how it goes, and I hope others find something to like in it!

spoiler rant abt Lisa Frankenstein
Okay, saw Lisa Frankenstein in theaters on Friday and OMGGG
it was like heathers meets Jennifers body meets Frankenstein and low-key kinda but im a cheerleader but like not gay just the aesthetics and campy bits like it was SOOO good, and I'm saying this mainly because I am a lover of campy 80's flicks and I also love when loser freak characters have like their own kind of pop off moments I also loved it too bc it reminded me so much of Jennifer's body but like if it had a happy ending? which honestly makes sense because Diablo Cody worked on it, like Idek how to explain it but they had the same vibe even w/out the murders AND like the scene where they kill the guy in the woods? that felt so heathers to me, like it also felt like the scene In Jennifers body too but like idk it was just so heathers too especially in the way that they were doing it but it was all like if it was happy instead so i'm very appreciative of that idk it was sooo good tho I wanna rewatch it immediately like the vibes are just so like cult classic film like UGH

your xwp reblogs has me feeling feels - what was your favorite arcs/episodes?
Oh man... it's been probably a decade since I rewatched the entire show but I do remember my all time favorite episode is One Against an Army from season 3. Mainly because that is one of the very first episodes I remember seeing on TV growing up, and later as one of the best (to me) OTP episodes following the "partner is injured/dying and other partner fights desperately to save them" theme. I love season 3 overall the most? I think? The Ides of March, though sad and traumatizing, is a great episode. Okay but also When Fates Collide in season 6. Uh. A Tale of Two Muses tho. Also The Bitter Suite. Girls Just Wanna Have Fun for Ancient Greek Vampires! The Quest, also because it (or maybe the following episode??) has one of the funniest bloopers of Lucy Lawless hucking the ambrosia prop and hitting the camera. And while I love the general over-all vibes of season one I really liked the finale episode Is There a Doctor in the House?. I need to rewatch now dangit.
It's actually really hard for me to choose a favorite arc over all but for characters: for Gabrielle I really enjoyed her character arc struggling though living by the Way of Love in season 3, as well as her later struggle becoming more of a warrior and learning that her gift as a bard was just as important-if not more so. I also enjoyed Xena's arc around her son Solan. Though sad, it was a great window into who she is as a character. I'm still somewhat frustrated with the conclusion of her character and the slow sad resolve of the last season BUT. I understand why they brought her back to the beginning of her story and it really was a well thought out and reasonable arc to her character. It showed the completion of her growth and self-actualization that I miss seeing in other media. That might be my favorite arc for Xena.
In conclusion: i love my campy dramatic moms.

Thoughts on some of the Mando negativity
I just wanna start this by saying that if you didn't enjoy the premiere, then that's fine. I'm not gonna start claiming that if you didn't like it, then you aren't a SW fan because that's stupid. If you disliked it, fair enough. I'm sorry that you didn't but I totally respect that it's your opinion.
Now let's just do a quick skim through some of the criticisms I've seen.
Should probably start off with the big one, which is the whole TBOBF issue! I can understand why they wanted Din and Grogu together again for this season because their dynamic is an integral part of the show (also, because of money). But when they were reunited in TBOBF, we all knew that this was gonna be a problem. They said that they're gonna try and write it in a way that covers the things people may have missed, but it's obviously not working too well so far. 😅 Personally, it hasn't ruined my enjoyment, so I'm kinda over it now. But I totally understand the frustration and do acknowledge that it wasn't the smartest decision.
Seen some people saying that they don't like the dialogue and that it feels AI generated. Personally, I don't have much of an issue with it but I do kinda see where people are coming from. I think the biggest thing is that it feels a little exposition-y and that's probably because they're trying to bring people up to speed if they haven't seen the TBOBF (we've already addressed how well that's going though). Obviously, it's definitely not like the amazing monologues we had in Andor, but this show is also more accessible for younger audiences, so they're gonna tone it down a little bit.
Which sort of brings me onto the next point: it feels too childish. Once again, I think this is a result of Andor. The Mandalorian has always been campy and fun. Sure, you get some serious moments, but they're not going to chuck them into the first episode of the season. They're just keeping it light and quirky to bring everyone back into the world of Mando. If you didn't enjoy it, fair enough, but I don't think it's too far off from the other funny moments in the show.
It felt rushed! I'm kind of with people on this one because I do think that everything could have done with being a couple minutes longer, especially with it hopping around so much. But I didn't find it to be a major issue, just that we were hitting a lot of story beats very quickly.
Nothing happened. I think this mainly comes from the fact that this is one of the only times when we haven't had a complete story within an episode (which makes me laugh when I think about how many people complained about it being too episodic) but I do think we need to remember that this is only episode 1. The entire point of this episode is to set up the story arcs that are going to be relevant this season. There was a lot to cover and I feel like trying to tie it all in to a complete story in episode one wouldn't have worked so well. It feels like this is one of those episodes that may be slightly more accepted when the rest of the season comes out, but who knows.
So yeah, that's just my two cents on some of the criticisms I've seen. Once again, if you didn't like the episode, then that's fair. I'm not here to call anyone a fake fan or anything. SW shows are never going to be for everyone and that's fine.
The whole TBOBF fiasco definitely didn't help it out much because they're struggling to keep everyone up to speed. But we'll see how it goes throughout the season.
I think the other issue is Andor. That show was such a success (for good reason) but now it means that everyone is expecting everything to be that show (I'm seeing this with TBB as well). The Mandalorian has always been more quirky because it's designed to be consumed by a younger audience (not to say that adults can't watch it). Objectively, I do think that Andor is better, but I also can't rewatch it as much as I do Mando because it's a more emotionally heavy show. Andor is not Mando and Mando is not Andor. It's perfectly fine to prefer one over the other, but I don't think that there should be an expectation for Mando to be something that it never was. If you've fallen out of love with it, then I'm sorry to hear that.
I think the main take away is to just wait it out and see how the rest of the show goes. This is only the first episode so we can't hinge the entire season on this.
[Hopefully this didn't sound ranty. I don't wanna sound like I'm having a go at people for their opinions. 😅 This is just my thoughts on some of the critiques that I've seen.]

OUTDATED, NEW VERSION PINNED ON MY PROFILE!!
i have written a fan theme (and iterated on it at least 5 times) for the fictional in-universe "thunder gun" franchise of IASIP. i wanted to try to nail that campy B-movie terminator vibe that i feel it has. i wanted it to be cheesy & corny but also a bop i have it listed as "instrumental" cus i DO have lyrics, im just kind of a pussy and havent recorded em yet, i'll post again when i DO have vocals recorded & mixed & shit. but yeah. hope u enjoy! (ofc there's some quotes from the sunny theme song, esp the outro, but i wanted it to mainly be my original writing)

For the Muppets concept of Welcome Home I'm thinking about it being a slice of life kinda thing. Just you (the reader) and our favorite puppet pals enjoying life. Good feel time of deal, campy fun and humor. Maybe a sprinkle of angst and seriousness from time to time, but mainly fun, easygoing shenanigans. I'm talking full on Muppets kind of thing, you know what I'm talking about.

Naughty Babe Ramble
There's gonna be spoilers up to episode 4...just so you're aware.
Tumblr media
I've been really stuck thinking about this past episode and sort of where we are about half-way through. I know for a lot of people, Naughty Babe is just silly fun, and there's also plenty who just wave it off as campy semi-BS. And while the show is certainly set up to be more silly than serious, I really have been engrossed by the new glimpses we've gotten into Yi and Diao now that they're at the center.
Tumblr media
I loved them as a couple in the Cutie Pie series, though I had some concerns, mostly things that I've been able to abandon now that we've gotten a bit more insight into Yi's mind specifically. Cutie Pie is very much Kuea's perspective, and therefore pretty knowledgeable of Diao's personality, but less so of Yi.
Tumblr media
And while I was somewhat suspicious of what we were going to see after the trailers, knowing about the whole amnesia thing, I'm actually pretty satisfied overall. Both because the amnesia didn't last for the whole season, but also because they clearly recognize that Diao knows Yi well enough to figure out he's lying. Like I do agree that both Lian and his dad would figure it out first, just because Yi doesn't hide so much from them, but I was concerned they would set Diao up to look a bit like an imbecile, and he is so not.
Tumblr media
I'm gonna start by talking about Diao, mostly because he's my favorite, but also because if we recognize that this show is mostly Yi's perspective, then I'm so happy they're still showing Diao as feisty, and cute. He's still shown as a little shy, but I think he's definitely guarded around Yi, especially right in this time, so it makes sense, that he sort of reads it that way. One of my favorite things about Diao in Cutie Pie was that he was clearly just as strong-willed and self-aware as Kuea, but where Kuea is more brash, Diao is just a tad softer. But his softness isn't weakness (I fucking hate when people think that) and we're continually given glimpses of his strength, both mentally and physically.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His practice and teaching of Taekwondo is clearly part of that, it's a martial arts style that has a heavy focus on meditation and mindfulness, but also philosophy of how you should behave as a citizen of humanity. It's also listed often as a potentially good option for self-defense in those that are of smaller stature (which Diao is). It's a martial art that I think is well-matched to the character, in that it's both strong and elegant, with a focus on moral character.
Tumblr media
The series so far shows Diao as mainly admirable...which is great, but it also speaks to what Diao is so frustrated by. He's not a piece of art, he doesn't want to be set on a pedestal and admired, he wants to be loved. He's been clear in his passion to Yi in the past, but it's Yi's that's stuck in his own head about what if's and so they aren't able to progress. And so now we're 3 years in the future, and Diao's wondering if he read everything all wrong.
Tumblr media
So moving on to hia Yi...I know you're trying, but god, do I wish that you would just get it together. I understand that the root of his behavior is all fear. He's afraid that the past coming to light, and his connection to Diao's trauma will cause DIao to hate him...and dude...if you pulled your head out of your ass and actually took in the person that Diao has become you'd see that it would never happen. I know he's drowning in the guilt of what happened with the tiger/puma/dog/jackalope (depending on when and where the story's being told)...but if you think Diao would learn that and not recognize that you were a 15 year old child who made a horrible mistake??? Diao has so much empathy, and Yi knows that, but he's still can't comprehend that that empathy also extends to him for some reason.
Tumblr media
As flawed as the man is, and honestly as poorly as he sees himself sometimes, though usually glossed over by the sheen of narcissism, he can be such a good man. In all of this universe, I've always been a bit meh on Max's acting, I'll be honest. He's fine, but I've always felt like because his character was so staid that I wasn't engaged, especially when Zee and Nunew and Nat were given so much more expression and emotion. But this last couple of episodes really, but especially number four, he has really been doing some great work.
Tumblr media
He's both solidified a lot of aspects of the character as well as bringing new depth. The nightmares talk and panic attack scene were really so good. Him just laying there as Diao talks about his nightmares and his eyes are just full of so many different emotions. and then when the panic attack really kicks in, his overall concern is not disturbing Diao. You don't have to have an internal monologue to know exactly where this panic attack comes from, and it's portrayed really well in my opinion. Of course everyone's experience will differ, but my sister has an anxiety disorder, and really her feelings as she's described them and her physical condition as I've watched her experience these attacks...they match up pretty well.
tumblr
In a lot of ways I do feel like we are seeing a little bit of the same character arc for the couple here that we saw for Lian and Kuea in Cutie Pie, with both Lian and Yi afraid that somehow they're being selfish in wanting their relationships with Kuea and Diao respectively. I think it's something that stems from their age difference, this knowing that there is a lot of opportunity out there for them, and are they sort of clipping their wings? It's a bit different for Kuea and Diao, but it does boil down to both wanting to be truly seen for who they are. For Kuea it was about reconciling his 'true self' and knowing that Lian loved him still. With Diao, I think it's about being seen as himself, but also being seen as someone worthy of being a true partner to Yi, to stand beside him. I think Yi's tendency to coddle him and lie to him has caused him to assume that Yi doesn't believe he's capable of handling the truth. And in a bit of a match to Kuea, since they've always been these sort of biddable, polite people (which is based around the cultural expectations especially in relation to their age difference), will there still be love and affection if they're assertive of their own needs/desires? For Kuea the answer was clearly yes, which Diao knows, but I think Lian was also a lot easier to read for Diao than Yi. It's also complicated by the fact that Diao is also afraid of what he might see, and so I think he chooses not to.
Tumblr media
My last little part isn't really about character, but more about how wildly uncomfortable I was watching the interactions between Diao's family and Yi and Diao. It was both awkward and insanely infuriating. I felt so insulted on Yi's behalf, watching this family treat him like little more than an open wallet. And don't even get me started on Diao, the way I know he was so embarrassed by their behavior, not just because it's so icky, but also because it makes him wonder "Does hia Yi think that I'm in this for his money??" I also kind of hated it because hia Yi clearly values family, and I know for certain that he's glad that his own father has such strong love and affection for Diao, to not be seen equally by Diao's family probably really hurts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I'm sorry this was such a ramble, but I have a lot of random feelings about the show.)

What is isfd??? I got to a mainly isfd blog through a one piece post and now I'm super confused?? Google refuses to tell me what it is
hello! it’s a very niche fandom so it’s hard to find much info on the internet lol. I’m not an official page I just managed to grab the handle :] we used to hang out on a forum that went down without any warning, so we’re trying to regroup on tumblr. isfd is a cult classic fiction work that has been mostly lost to history. it’s this complex genre-blending anachronistic universe held together by beautiful theming and motifs, like a kinda campy but rly heartfelt deep dive into the causes and effects of a culture of violence. would absolutely recommend looking into it if you have any interest in that kind of thing!!

Is It Really That Bad?
Tumblr media
Grease is a delightfully corny musical filled with 50s nostalgia (mostly the good kind) and helped shoot the careers of John Travolta and Olivia Newton John to new heights. There’s a little bit of values dissonance here and there, but considering when it was made and what decade it was about, it could honestly be a lot worse. It’s easily one of the most fun and enjoyable musicals ever made, and it should come as no surprise the Library of Congress deemed this film significant enough to add to the National Film Registry. Is it any surprise a film like this had a sequel?
Well, yeah, kind of. Paramount didn’t think the movie was going to be much more than a modest one-off hit when it came out despite the 50s nostalgia of the time, mainly due to the spectacular failure of Columbia’s musical adaptation of Lost Horizon being such a spectacular bomb. Why risk making musicals when it seems they’re on the way out, right? But then Grease unexpectedly became one of the biggest films of 1978, and the execs got little dollar signs in their eyes. Sequel time, baby!
One problem, though: None of the original cast was available. Or, I should say, none of the original cast you’d give a fuck about was available. Travolta and Newton-John were already off to bigger and better things, which is a shame since they were both interested before it took them forever to get a script. Only Didi Conn (Frenchy) and Eddie “Mandark” Deezen (Eugene) were coming back. And, look, I love Dexter’s Lab but that wasn’t going to be made for like twenty years or something, so Eddie wasn’t Travolta-levels of star power. Still, Paramount was dead set on turning Grease into a massive franchise. We’re talking spin-offs, sequels, a TV series, the works!
But then the screenwriter for the original died, and the original director went off to make The Blue Lagoon. Of course, they found great backups! The screenwriter is a Canadian comedian who wrote Airplane II (the less funny one) and the director was the choreographer of the original stage and film versions of Grease! How reassuring! And then basically all of the actors they actually wanted in this didn’t end up getting in. For the male lead they wanted Timothy Hutton, but when that didn’t work out they tested Andy Gibb… who failed. They then went with an unknown, Maxwell Caulfield, and casting an unknown is always a gamble. For the leading lady, Pat Benatar and Debbie Harry were considered before they ended up going with an unknown by the name of Michelle Pfeiffer. And guess what! Those two ended up hating each other.
Oh yeah and the final draft of the script was only finished midway through production, without Frenchy in it despite her actress being there, so they just tossed the scenes they’d filmed into the movie anyway.
The end result was savaged by critics and did not really make enough to warrant the massive franchise Paramount was hoping for. The careers of most of the actors involved were damaged pretty bad, especially Caulfield, though Pfeiffer managed to et out mostly unscathed. Overall, the film was just a mess that these days is relegated to lists of the worst sequels ever. Hell, unless you read lists like that you might be unaware this film even exists, because it’s relatively obscure.
Still, it does have its fans, including Andrew Garfield of all people. It’s something of a cult classic in some circles, so surely there’s something of value to be found here, right? Is Grease 2 really that bad?
THE GOOD
Michelle Pfeiffer is pretty in this.
Tumblr media
...No. Really. That’s it.
THE BAD
This film’s biggest problem is just how overexaggerated everyone’s performances are. Like all of the dance numbers feature every single character mugging the camera and just making the most absurd faces and movements, like this is a live action cartoon. And look, I love goofy, campy silliness, but there’s a fine line between corny and trying way too hard and this is firmly in the latter camp. Every single number is just ruined by this insufferable desire to be silly.
Tumblr media
The other biggest problem is the songs. All of them suck. All of them are also about sex, and that doubly sucks. None of the lyrics are very clever, but all of them are fucking stupid. This might just be one of the horniest movies ever made, and I mean that as an insult. I’ve watched pornos less obsessed with sex than this film. This is all the more jarring because the first film was just filled to the brim with fun and memorable songs, but here? They’re all forgettable crap with no clear identity.
youtube
Maxwell Caulfield is a terrible leading man, and I say this as someone who has a hard time believing John Travolta is a leading man. At least with Travolta he does exude a sort of movie star quality; Caulfield just feels to me like a cardboard cutout of a person, or an even more wooden Anakin Skywalker than what we got in Attack of the Clones. Caulfield is just an absolute void of charisma, and it’s no wonder Pfeiffer thought he was a stuck up little shit.
Tumblr media
IS IT REALLY THAT BAD?
Uh, yeah. It’s fucking bad.
I really wanted to enjoy this. I really did. I love stupid, campy, silly musicals! This should have been perfect for me! And yet it was one of the most tedious, miserable viewing experiences I’ve ever had. I didn’t laugh. I didn’t smile. I was not once charmed or amused by anything I saw onscreen. As a matter of fact, there were times where I just wanted to turn it off because it was just such a slog. The extended cut of Dawn of Justice is a more well-paced and riveting film.
Look, if you like this movie, more power to you. Lord knows there’s plenty of trashy films I absolutely love that many people wouldn’t agree with. But in my opinion, Grease 2 just doesn’t work, and the reason why is because it’s Grease 2. If this film was just its own thing and not trying to coast on the fame of its superior predecessor, maybe I’d be a little more forgiving. But that’s not the world we live in. We live in a world where this film with tenuous connections to the original is allowed to call itself a sequel.
I’m gonna say that score is a little too nice, and this movie deserves something more like a 2. It’s not the worst thing ever and it’s sure to appeal to some folks, but boy is this just plain not a good film in my eyes. It really just feels like it's trying way too hard to be the original, and it's failing miserably at it at every single turn. It is one of the worst movies I've ever watched, but at least it's a bad movie where I can almost see the appeal. It just doesn't appeal to me.

Final thoughts on Ken Russell's Valentino (1977)
Tumblr media
I can see some people digging this movie because it's so grotesque and pitiless with its satire of Hollywood. I can respect this. They are allowed to like whatever they want.
I was mostly bored and honestly kind of annoyed the whole time. The movie felt like an episodic string of vignettes more than a coherent biopic. I was getting bored by the halfway point, mainly because the way they write Valentino as so passive and colorless, and Nureyev's bad acting doesn't help at all.
Tumblr media
I'm no hardcore Valentino fan, but it bothered me how this movie made him out to be the most pathetic person in the universe--- pissing himself, being humiliated repeatedly, generally being portrayed as an easily manipulated idiot. (Don't even get me started on the usual Svengali-style portrayal of Natacha Rambova, whose relationship with Valentino was much more complicated than what we see here.)
Tumblr media
In real life, Valentino did not always make smart decisions. He could be very rash and he was temperamental as hell. But reading about the guy, he NEVER came off as that hapless or lacking in agency.
I found the whole thing juvenile and dull, only interesting in those few moments where the vulgarity actually made a point. (Example: Valentino is in the sack with a costar and she starts gyrating on top of him, describing her fantasies inspired by The Sheik while Valentino barely touches her. It's an outrageous commentary on how fans project ideals onto flesh and blood stars, to the point where the actual person behind the star image matters little.)
Tumblr media
I think the thing that gets me about this movie-- and really, most biopics in general-- is that the real story and the real guy are so much more fascinating than this script. The real people with their flaws and egos are much more human and vivid than the cartoons we get here. And I would be more forgiving if this went for 100% surrealism like Russell's Lisztomania, because that movie is actually hilarious and fun. Or Tommy, which is also super campy and entertaining. This is just unpleasant and boring, with bad acting, bad dialogue, and only some lovely 1920s costuming to salvage it.

YouTube Channels - Core 9
Harry
Harry’s youtube channel would be surprisingly mundane to what the public assumed. And barren. There’s like 15 videos on his channel.
He makes very Day In the Life and Get Ready With Me styled videos. Simplistic, picture vlogs during the summer months with videos taken during trips. It’s very mundane and quaint. If people want to see him, they have to watch his friends’ videos. He appears mostly in Hermione’s or Ginny’s videos, and a few in Draco’s. At least his “private” account, which is more BTS styled videos for the Chimera YouTube. On his more mainstream account that the wizarding public see, there’s more social justice style commentary. Hermione appears in a lot of those as a fact check and to also get her voice out there. His most famous video is called “My Thoughts on Being the Boy Who Lived”. It’s an hour long. People who watch it are greeted with a black screen for 59 minutes before it opens to a Zoom call of Ron laughing before the rest of his friends join in and the video ends with Draco threatening to hex people who keep prying into Harry’s life.
Hermione
Hermione is very education based. She has weekly deep dives into subjects that she finds fascinating. Pulls a lot of sources for her videos and gives her own spin. Very educational. She enjoys making study guide videos for classes as well as Tips and Tricks videos to help other students who may need pointers to study. If there’s a class at Hogwarts, Hermione has probably made a video about it. Or several. She does a monthly book review, filled with everything she has read- from scientific journals to cheesy romance. She rates them on whether she would reread them, but the list is very subjective to tastes.
She often appears in make-up or hair styling videos with Pansy, or if her other friends want her as a “google” source. The longest video she was in was with Draco about the specifications about potion making and whether the rules are more of a guideline or actual things that need to be listened to. There is an hour long, complex argument included that most viewers who don’t care about potions will skip over but plenty of potion masters would enjoy.
Ron
Ron’s content is far and few between. Much like Harry, he is found in other videos. Videos he does make are about quidditch, his boyfriends or chess. He talks about quidditch in broad terms and often analyzes videos of quidditch matches, finding flaws in plans and offering improvements on how to better strategize gaining points with a quaffle before grabbing the snitch. Oliver Wood has called many a time to lament how much he wishes Ron was on the team when he attended Hogwarts.
It is not uncommon for him to found in Ginny, Hermione or Neville’s videos. Usually in the background or contributing, but his quick wit and humour is sometimes the spotlight. When making a video with Hermione, he acts as a great metric for what most witches and wizards can understand and usually decodes most of what Hermione says.
Draco
Despite his best wishes, Draco’s channel is chock full of charms and potions videos. He is most passionate about charms and likes to make explanatory videos on how to best perform charms or make enhancements to charms. He has made a few campy, early 2014 styled vlogs with his friends such as “The Boyfriend Tag” “Best Friend Tag” etc.
He doesn’t really appear in other videos. He chimes in a bit on Ron’s quidditch videos or Harry’s day to day lifestyle ones.
Pansy
This fashionista has one of the most active YouTube pages. She does monthly shopping videos, and hauls. She does some DYI for upcycling old pieces to make a new one. She specializes in her make-up get ready with me videos though. Like most beauty youtubers she sits down and just does full faces and talks for 20 minutes. She does reviews on products sent to her and expressed continuing that after Hogwarts.
She hosts a lot of collabs, mainly doing Hermione’s make-up or styling unique pieces for Luna. She is also found in a lot of Harry’s main account videos or even on Millie and Daphne’s joint channel doing challenge videos.
Blaise
Besides Harry, Blaise has one of the most inactive channels. He does travel vlogs over the summer and had a small series of italian videos when he first started but he prefers to keep his private life, private. He doesn’t appear in a lot of other videos either, if only in the background.
Neville
Herbology videos. This man loves herbology and he will go on hour long tangents about plants. He runs projects in the greenhouses and spends his videos talking about plants and their uses, whether medicinally or in potions. This boy just talks about plants. He also discusses ecology and music but the main focus is plants.
Neville appears in a lot of other videos, especially when Hermione makes Herbology videos. Ron is also there to decode the technical terms.
Ginny
Quidditch, quidditch and quidditch. This jock adores quidditch. She reviews a lot of Top 10 videos analyzing quidditch plays and games. She brings Ron and Harry on a lot to also talk sports.
Ginny is found in a ton of Luna’s videos, or Harry’s videos as well. She has the most collabs though, bringing other Quidditch players on to watch the plays and analyze them for how easy the moves would be to replicate.
Luna
Luna’s channel is full of art and jewelry videos. She also does Tarot readings to several of her friends. She does a lot of social commentary on mental health topics during her videos as well. Some people have clicked on a Luna Lovegood video expecting a easy to listen to speed art video, and gets sucked into understanding how demonizing mental health only worsens the problem at hand, and tips to make life a little less overwhelming for those with sensitivity disorders.
Luna doesn’t collaborate with many people except Ginny or Draco. She doesn’t appear in many videos except her own.
