BRACKET REVEAL

Alright. At long last, I present to you the bracket...or should I say...*BRACKETS* for the Virtual Character Tournament!

Given the scale, the first round is going to be one bracket per week, 4 a day, with each lasting 24 hours. I know that this is still tight, but given how many contestants there are, along with the necessary inclusions of images and propaganda (oh and I guess also my job), it's what I can do to keep this semi-manageable. There's also no redemption round this time. It's gonna be a single elimination tournament. Be kind to your peers. This is not but a drop in the infinite ocean of the internet.

...oh yeah the brackets themselves. We'll be going in order over the course of 4 weeks. I'll make proper announcements for them as they commence. Given how many there are and what I want to get done beforehand, Bracket 1 will likely begin some time this week. But for the matchups...

FLASHing Lights

Barry Allen didn't know how he got here. Well, the party, at least. He knows why he's in Hell. He's done things, terrible things. Some while under someone else's control, some with his own free will.

Sacrifice a handful to save millions.

Of course, that was never Barry's intention in those different moments, but it still happened. So now Barry Allen, 'The Flash,' was in Hell - in a new form.

Barry's form was feline-based. Due to his superspeed powers, he assumed the form of a cheetah. It was lazy and on the nose, but Barry couldn't see himself as anything else. His fur was dark gray with red dots and tear stripes running from his eyes to his mouth. His legs were digitigrade, and he had a long tail.

Barry still had brown hair, but now it looked similar to an animal's mane. His clothing matched his old super suit: a red top with his lightning bolt symbol and crimson jeans.

Black vein-like markings wrapped around his eyes, temple, and ears. The eyes themselves were solid black with two little white pinpricks for pupils. Barry had stubby yet powerful black claws to match, and his teeth, while healthy, were pitch black. Whenever he used his powers, his lighting was now ghostly white with a dark aura.

The traits were from a villain named Bloodwork, who'd taken control over Barry and had him do the worst of his sins. If Hell was made for torment, the constant reminder of his actions as a Blood Brother did the trick.

Barry wandered around the party, slightly awed by the bouncing music and its size. His vibes were off. His flavor would be something sour, like green apples or even rotten food.

Most of the hellhounds were snarling at him. The old Cats vs Dogs shitstorm, so Barry couldn't really sit anywhere. So he resorted to walking around.

He really, really had no idea what he was doing.

Hi, can I ask your top 5 favorite moments each from The Legend of Korra and Hunger Games (if you don't mind me asking)? Thanks if you want to answer....

Hi anon! Thanks for the ask. It's been close to a decade since I've read the hunger games so I don't remember details. But I do remember one scene in Mockingjay where Katniss describes of her time in District 13, where for entertainment, she'd show thus red lazer dot around and her cat Buttercup(?) would follows it. The Peeta and Katniss reunion scene where Peeta's screaming to kill her also stays in my mind.

TLOK is a bit more of a recent rewatch so;

Korra's S1 fight with the Fire Ferrets where she uses the principles of the airbending door shutter exerecise to weave and dodge.

Korra in all of S4 I'm not even kidding. Every single moment with her in that season is wonderful.

Are you named after anyone?

Aelfraed: I was named after my grandfather... though I was almost named after my father. Very glad that didn't happen its bad enough sharing a lastname. Arnvaldr: Dunno, never met my folks and never bothered to ask my sister Vigdis. Don't really care they were all probably shitty.

Magician: That's actually pretty hard to answer when I don't remember what it was. Night: Wouldn't you like to know human. You can't trick what is mine so easily. You are not that clever. Though the attempt is amusing.

When was the last time you cried?

Aelfraed: A couple of weeks ago now, its been a good thing to have gotten away from the university in the long run despite everything else that happened. Arnvaldr: pft, poor detective. Dunno the last time I did.

Magician: After Night threw me in the deep end. They left me to trick some fae into believing I wasn't human by myself, specifically one that I'm sure was planning to kill me. Night: I apologized for that Magician, you seemed to be fine at the time. You had them convinced. Magician: You called that an apology? Ugh you make absolutely no sense. Do fae even cry? You thought I was ill. Night: Correction, I thought you were ill because you kept sleeping for more time than you were awake. Fae do cry, I have cried. Magician: When? Night: I would rather not talk about it Magician.

Do you have kids?

Aelfraed: I've never really considered it. Arnvaldr: Never, nope. Not happening.

Do you use sarcasm?

Aelfraed: Its not really something I use, I would rather state things clearly. Arnvaldr: Figured you'd pick the boring answer Detective. Life's more fun with a good dose of sarcasm.

Night: Me? Never, I only ever say exactly what I mean. Magician: Uh-huh, sure you do Night. There has to be some sarcasm in all that cryptic stuff you end up saying. Wait... stop laughing its not my fault you manage to say that with a completely straight face!

What’s the first thing you notice about others?

Aelfraed: Their mood probably. The expression on their face. Arnvaldr: Really, doesn't the au... never mind. I guess we have something in common Detective, well sort of.

What’s your eye color?

Aelfraed: They're gray the same as my father's, not a nice kind. They always seem so cold and judging. Arnvaldr: Huh I thought they were darker than that, probably just the lighting. Running across rooftops at night isn't the best way to get a good look at someone. Mine are green in case you missed it. Aelfraed: Are you trying to make finding you easier? Arnvaldr: I'll say again, catch me if you can Detective.

Magician: Mine are a redish brown... Night? What did you do to my eyes! Why are they more red! Night: Pft, you didn't notice Magician? I thought you would have noticed before now. You didn't really think you'd fit in with such ordinary eyes, you've seen mine. I am sure humans do not have this shade of purple. Magician: I was a bit distracted with the ears. Also that's more than just purple.

Scary stories or happy endings?

Aelfraed: I would rather see a happy ending, life is bad enough without adding horror stories to it. Arnvaldr: Wuss, give me horror any day. Happy endings just aren't realistic.

Night: Horror, without a doubt. The more disturbing the better. Magician: That tracks, living with you is like being in a horror story and I've had enough of that. Happy endings please, hopefully I'll get one.

Any special talents?

Arnvaldr: Does thievery count, or maybe my nack for escaping. Aelfraed: I would say no. With what you steal I'm rather surprised you're still alive.

Magician: I'm pretty good with my magic tricks by this point, as long as I have my gear there is a lot I can pull off. Night's is probably being terrifying. Night: ah haha, funny. You are just easy to scare Magician.

Where were you born?

Aelfraed: A smaller town outside of Edinburgh. Arnvaldr: I don't really know, don't really care.

Magician: I was technically born in the city. Mum had to go to the hospital and we didn't have one nearer but I grew up in a small town that's practically countryside. Night: One of the many fae realm pockets. I believe the mirror to Magician's small town though according to Magician the two are quite different.

What are your hobbies?

Aelfraed: Reading, give me a good book and I'll be happy for hours. Even better if I'm learning something. Arnvaldr please don't say theft, please tell me you have something else to do. Arnvaldr: Oh come on, the theft is fun! But if you insist, running... specifically over rooftops.

Magician: Magic tricks, cycling and video games. Night: For me gardening, my blue roses are quite well kept. Though also the stars and my experiments. Magician: Don't give them any ideas, you don't want to be one of their experiments. Its a nightmare. Night: Shhh, you're scaring them away.

Do you have any pets?

Arnvaldr: Hmm I'd like one, not really able to look after one though. Don't tell the Detective I feed the strays when I can, I don't want him getting the wrong idea.

Night: I have Nyx, he's a crow I found near the lake portal. Magician: Wait so Nyx looks like a normal crow because he is?

What sports do you play/have played?

Magician: A little football with my friends, its fun but I'm not serious about it like some of them. Night: I would explain but we would be here for some time, I doubt humans have fae sports.

How tall are you?

Aelfraed: Quite tall, I think I got most of the height in the family. Only my father is taller and that's not by much. Arnvaldr: 5ft 3, less height really helps with the whole thief thing.

Night: You think I am constrained to a specific height? No, though I do prefer to remain on the taller end of things. Magician: A little jealous that you can just choose. I'm 5ft I'm hoping to get a bit more as I get older.

Favorite subject in school?

Aelfraed: Everything, I missed the variety of subjects once I started at University.

Magician: Science, it gave me so many ideas for tricks. Its not really school but I really like the theatre club at the community theatre across town too.

Dream job?

Aelfraed: I don't know right now, I've left university and haven't worked out what I want to do now. What about you Arnvaldr? If you didn't need to steal what would you do? Arnvaldr: Come on, I'd probably still pocket things. Maybe a Focus Engineer or Archeologist. Aelfraed: I didn't know you were interested in history. Arnvaldr: I'm not, but that's where the interesting treasures come from so where better to pocket them. Aelfraed: There's no changing you is there.

Magician: I want to be a magician but I think that's obvious, maybe a stage actor too.

how do you think sniper would handle a cat? if you've already done something like that, do you think he knows a lot about coat variants?

Sniper loves any kind of animal, in a dogs vs cats argument he’d prefer a dog but he also wouldn’t say no to a cat either

he’d probably become the cat’s favorite person because he’s a naturally warm guy, so it would seek him out as the optimal napping spot

if they had a cat on the base, he’d also absolutely use the laser on his rifle and have the cat chase the red dot around

Sniper would also absolutely know about different kinds of cats, if someone asked what kinda cat it was, he’d say it without even a second glance, he’s a walking textbook when it comes to animals or rocks or plants or what have you

I think he’d have a soft spot for Bengals especially

just a post of thoughts and headcanons about lysandre's team bc i've been thinking about that and now when i think about stuff i'm like "oh i can post about it on tumblr dot com"

lysandre's team is by and large royalty-themed which makes sense of course! no particular order to tackle them in just vibing

pyroar is the pokémon usually associated with lysandre in official merch and the likes. his hair was definitely styled to be reminiscent of a mane. the imagery is straightforward: lions are associated with kings. there's the whole "king of the jungle" thing ofc but also lions are associated with english royalty in particular. the lion association is probably also what influenced him having a 4:1 female/male ratio of scientists.

i tend to write litleo as being lysandre's first pokémon, given to him as a child as a family tradition. this would be how malva got hers as well.

the nickname "Orléans" probably doesn't require much of an explanation; it's a name associated with the french royal family. if you want bonus lore about it though, i actually partially stole it from a movie called Marquis which is about a talking dick and involves terrifying puppets, one of which is a lion named Orléans. i have not seen the movie.

gyarados is lysandre's mega-evolved pokémon. i find this fact fascinating for many reasons, some i will explain shortly. magikarp's japanese name is koiking and its design is definitely kingly. interestingly, it mostly loses these attributes upon evolving, which might make it seem like an odd choice for a royalty-themed team. i have shared some of my thoughts about lysandre's gyarados in a previous post, but i will touch on a point i haven't discussed yet (here at least. i've talked about it a bit on twitter.)

even disregarding shipping opinions, it's plain as day that lysandre and sycamore were created as counterparts. thematically, they are linked respectively to death, despair, pessimism, destruction, the color red (yveltal) and life, hope, optimism, creation, the color blue (xerneas.) imo the fact that lysandre's key pokémon is blue and associated with the opposite type to his other main pokémon (water vs fire) isn't a coincidence. we can only speculate what it means, i suppose, but i find it very interesting.

i tend to write magikarp as being lysandre's second pokémon, usually because his litleo caught one and lysandre rescued him as a result. (him having a cat and a fish is also kind of funny...)

the nickname "Charlemagne" probably doesn't merit an explanation either. he's a frank king. it's a long name, which fits a long pokémon.

mienfoo/mienshao is an ermine, which are linked to royalty because of the fur, mostly, although it also relates to heraldry. it's definitely lysandre's most underrated pokémon imo.

i haven't actually written about how lysandre and mienfoo met much! i tend to see him as being his most recent pokémon. rescued by sycamore and kept at the lab, he takes an interest in lysandre. maybe i'll write about it in more details someday.

the nickname "Pyrrhus" comes from King Pyrrhus of Epirus from which comes the term "pyrrhic victory." it also means "red-haired" so there's that. i don't think either of those require much elaboration.

it's not the first instance of murkrow/honchkrow being linked to a team leader, and it's pretty unsurprising, considering honchkrow's whole deal is being at the head of a murkrow gang. in french its name even contains the word "boss" (and in english, of course, there’s “honcho” in there as well.)

the link with royalty isn't as straightforward at first, but my personal theory is that it relates to Odin and his crows. there are a lot of references to norse mythology in pokémon xy, most notably irt the legendary trio, so it doesn't seem that far-fetched. Odin is tied to death, war, and royalty (among other things.)

i also have never written about lysandre meeting his murkrow. i like to think they ran into each other in some of his later travels, maybe before he met sycamore in lumiose.

the nickname "Léon" doesn't actually have any interesting story behind it! obviously it relates to lions, but i was actually thinking of the fact that in french people say that a peacock's cry sounds like "Léon"... how this relates to murkrow/honchkrow, don't ask me, but it stuck.

That Kind of Woman

Soooo, this is kinda going to be a multi-part story. Sorry for any grammar mistake, english isn my first language. I chose to create a character and name her because I literally can't write Y/N, I need to name my characters.

Part I- How They Met

April, 17th 2021

“I resent you.” It was the first thing Pete said to her when they greeted each other, and Leta knew it wasn’t serious because there was a smile on the comedian’s face.

It was the first time they had seen each other, perhaps since the beginning of the pandemic.

The brunette had been stuck in London when the quarantine was announced, she had gone to the UK to film The Batman, and when she returned to the US she went straight to film another movie in Los Angeles. The boxing match between Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren was the first event that Leta was attended since Covid-19 had broken out in the world. And even then it was only because she would be performing a few songs from her newly released debut album.

“What did I do?” She smiled, hands still on her friend’s forearm, aware of the pictures being taken.

“I saw your interview with Fallon, you saying that Harry Styles is your best friend, that hurt, deeply in my core.” Pete said still smiling.

“I said he’s my best guy friend, but bitch, you’re totally my platonic soulmate.” She rolled her whiskey-colored eyes lying through her teeth, but still smiling, Pete laughed.

“Never change Leta.” It was the only thing he said. Pete turned to the man accompanying him. “Leta, this is Jack.” The comedian slapped the rapper lightly on the shoulder

“Hi, Jack Harlow.” He held out his hand, looking her in the eyes with a captivating smile that the brunette returned.

Shit, she liked what she was seeing.

To call him handsome was almost an insult. He was…beautiful. All bright blue eyes and curly ash brown hair, and a grin that ought to be illegal. He was very tall and obvious had a nice build despite clearly not being the muscular type.

And she was a little afraid that if she got too close she’d spend her time counting the freckles dotting his nose and cheekbones.

“Hey Babe, Leta Leon.” She still had her hand in his, the artist tilted her head slightly, making her long black hair fall over her shoulder. “Jack Harlow like in Whats Poppin Jack Harlow?” She asked.

The man grinned even wider, displaying a dimple. “Yep, That’s me.”

What a coincidence

She smirked. “Wow, what a small world.” She commented, looking at the two men with a big smile before fixing her feline eyes on the rapper—the incredibly attractive rapper who was still holding her hand on his—. “You’re partially the reason I’m in Atlanta.”

“And why is that?” His smile mirrored hers. Flirty.

Leta moved closer to him, her body almost touching his. “Why, if not to seduce you into a feature?” She said seriously batting her long dark eyelashes, her head was tilted up slightly so that the two of them maintained eye contact. “You’re on your way to being one of the best rappers of our generation, I’m on the way to being one of the best pop artists of our generation, we could be quite a feature.”

Pete cleared his throat, reminding the duo of his presence.

Leta backed away from Jack with a smirk back on her face, letting go of his hand in the process.
