Mooncake Festival - September 29, 2003
Traditionally consumed during the Mid-Autumn Festival in China, mooncakes are a type of Chinese pastry item. While moonwatching is allegedly related to the event and mooncakes are considered a delicacy, the festival is mostly about the harvest. While commemorating the holiday, mooncakes are shared among friends or at family get-togethers. As one of the four most significant Chinese festivals, the Mid-Autumn Festival is well-known.

a little treat
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wednesday, January 24th, 2024. Spent the last 5 days in bed in pain due to fibromyalgia flare ups and a broken elevator. Decided to treat myself to some tasty Chinese bakery goodies for lunch as a little treat to boost my mood a little. I got a little slice of mango cake, a classic egg tart and this stunning little passionfruit blueberry dessert. The red caught my eye and I decided to try something new. You can see I’m still glued to my heating pad as the cord and control panel is pictured in the second photo in the right. I don’t think my building has heat anymore? Every single time I touch my radiator heater, it feels cold to the touch. This is a common theme with my building. Management loves to save money by turning off the heat during the coldest part of the winter, or simply never turning on the heat in the fall and just letting tenants freeze. So that’s part of why I’m spending so much time glued to my heating pad, laying in bed under a mountain of blankets. My room is fucking freezing all the time! I think I need to get a heated blanket instead of waiting for management to start caring about basic tenants rights or develop a sense of empathy!

Pineapple King Bakery, 46827 Warm Springs Blvd, Fremont (Warm Springs), CA 94539
Tumblr media
Love Hong Kong style pineapple buns? Pineapple King Bakery has the widest variety of pineapple buns and pineapple puffs. An original pineapple bun is $2.75. Other pineapple buns have guava, salted egg, pandan coconut, chocolate marshmallow, custard, red bean ube, durian, sesame, matcha mochi, BBQ pork, etc. The buns are split open and the puffs are injected with filling. They also have egg tarts, baked buns, pineapple puffs, and drinks. I thought I saw mini pineapple buns too? And Pineapple King merch, including cute caps and canvas tote bags.
Gold butter Pineapple bun ($4.10): Served warm with a thick pat of Kerrygold salted butter. The bun is medium-sized with a “pineapple” cookie top (no actual pineapple in the bun). I’ve had bigger buns served with more butter. There’s a cheaper option with unbranded butter. It’s an excellent bun – soft, light, fluffy, with a crusty top that’s less sweet than usual (compared to other pineapple buns).
Hot milk tea, less sweet ($4.60): Still seemed quite sweet. Milky, strong tea flavor.
I bought buns for other people and they were all WARM. They’re super fresh.
There are two lines: self-ordering on the left, ordering from the cashier on the right. Online ordering is coming soon. There is no interior that’s accessible to customers, but they have some outdoor benches and tables. The place is popular. Also, it doesn’t open early, so plan to have an afternoon pineapple bun snack.
They’ll call your order number when it’s ready. It does take awhile and there’s usually a line. Closed on Tuesdays.

Mien Bao House, 1718 N Milpitas Blvd, Milpitas, CA 95035
Tumblr media
Mien Bao House replaced another Chinese bakery. I went late in the evening and they were sold out of all their baked buns and egg tarts. They still had cake slices, cookies, cupcakes, steamed baos, frozen dumplings and buns, muffins, and coconut tarts.
The refrigerated cake rolls looked terrible. The frosting was cracked and dried looking. I should have walked out but most Chinese bakeries had closed and MBH was actually open in the evening.
Fried sesame ball: Thick, chewy glutinous rice exterior, red bean filling inside was a strange shade of pink and didn’t have much red bean flavor, served cold. It was below average.
Big chicken bun ($5): Truly meal size with Chinese sausage, a hard-boiled egg, wood ear mushrooms, and chicken pieces. The bun was kept in a warm and probably steaming for hours. The bun was soggy on the bottom but the filling tasted decent. The exterior was thick, sweet, and mushy.
Honey cookies: just okay, not much flavor
Japanese cheesecake: Fluffy, light, moist. Not bad but mushy on the bottom.
Mien Bao House is in a busy shopping area. Parking could be difficult. They also had lots of deals, including a free Japanese cheesecake with a purchase of $20 or more. Prices are very reasonable.

Chinatown staple Diamond Bakery closes as owner retires, July 2, 2023
'Diamond Bakery has been a Calgary favourite and certainly a Chinatown go-to for BBQ pork buns, egg tarts and deep-fried pork dumplings,' said Ward 7 Coun. Terry Wong
Tumblr media
A decades-long fixture in Calgary’s Chinatown is closing shop, as its owner celebrates moving into retirement. In a social media post, the Chinatown Business Improvement Area commended owner Henry Chan for his 30 years running the bakery. “Henry Chan is one of the kindest and most hard-working merchants you will find in Chinatown and we wish him all the best in his retirement,” they wrote. Ward 7 Coun. Terry Wong is a former executive director of the Chinatown BIA. He said Diamond Bakery will be missed, but that there will be an opportunity for a new business to make its home in Chinatown. “Diamond Bakery has been a Calgary favourite and certainly a Chinatown go-to for BBQ pork buns, egg tarts and deep-fried pork dumplings that we’re going to miss,” Wong said. “We wish the owner a great retirement and look forward to another great Chinatown cultural offering.” City council recently approved a plan that aims to grow the historic Chinatown while preserving the downtown area’s cultural heritage. That plan will involve new infrastructure development, including mixed-use residential-commercial buildings and public spaces, with developers needing to meet certain Asian esthetic requirements in their designs. Jason Herring for the Calgary Herald
Further reading:
My go-to for Hong Kong bakery staples like pineapple buns, coconut and egg tarts, and cocktail buns. They had an even wider selection of when I was a kid: 缽仔糕, 白糖糕, fried curry beef bun, wedding pastries, and until the pandemic their selection of mooncakes. The original must-have was their large palmiers--the kind a kid should probably split in two but didn't because there was always the promise you'd have another next week.
"Staple" doesn't quite illustrate the institutional position, it was the oldest independent Chinese bakery in the city and provided a very specific sense of home for so many of us. 老板, his staff, and Diamond Bakery are an integral part of the story Calgary's Chinatown. We were all so lucky to have shared in their warmth.
