Asked the question would there be another film, Gareth Neame told us “we hope so.”
Cast members, producer and director of Downton Abbey: A New Era at the Chiswick In Film festival by Bridget Osborne, Chiswick Calendar Oct 3, 2022
More popular than in their wildest imaginings
Michelle Obama watched it with her daughters on Air Force One and Hilary Clinton watched it with Bill and Chelsea on Sunday nights in their pyjamas, such is the enduring appeal of Downton Abbey.
This little nugget came from the panel of producer Gareth Neame, director Simon Curtis and cast members Lesley Nicol (Mrs Patmore) and Phyllis Logan (Mrs Hughes) when they came along to the inaugural Chiswick In Film Festival on Sunday 2 October 2022.

The connection between the panel and Chiswick is that they all live locally, as does Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary Crawley), Elizabeth McGovern (Cora Crawley, Countess of Grantham, in real life married to Simon Curtis), producer Liz Trubridge and designer Donal Woods. If ever there was a Chiswick film, this is it.

After the screening Lesley Nicol told the audience she lived near Chiswick House and walked her dogs there regularly. Her first inkling that the series was going to be such a success came a few weeks into the first series when a fellow dog walker with whom she had a nodding acquaintance:
“came charging across the cricket pitch at Chiswick House and threw her arms around me and hugged me.
“That doesn’t usually happen” she said. It is not how dog walkers tend to behave.

A trip to the French Riviera and a visit from Hollywood
Gareth Neame, who has produced all the TV series from the beginning and the two feature length films, said the thing he felt had been missing was a trip to the French Riviera. A family like this would have gone to the French Riviera, whose popularity as a tourism centre was established by the English in the late 1880s.
Downton Abbey: A New Era finds the family still in the 1920s. It contains several interwoven stories: in one strand the 7th Earl of Grantham goes off to the South of France with the Countess and quite a large party, including Carson as their butler, to meet the owner of a villa which has been mysteriously left to the Dowager Countess Violet by a man who was very fond of her in her youth.
In another strand a film production company from Hollywood descends on the Abbey to make a movie but catastrophe strikes when they hear of the success of the first ‘talkie’. The filming is called off but Lady Mary asks what it would take to remake the scenes they have already shot with sound and make the rest of the film as a talkie.
The producer clutches at her idea and runs with it. The only trouble is, the heroine Myrna Dalgleish (played by Laura Haddock) has a thick cockney accent, which just will not do. The leading man has no such difficulty. He takes a shine to Thomas Barrow. Meanwhile the old lady Dowager Countess is fading fast…
“An honour to tell Violet’s final story” – Simon Curtis
“We nearly filmed the villa on the French Riviera at Gunnersbury House” Gareth Neame told the audience. “It was touch and go during lockdown.”
The house at Gunnersbury Park was Plan B. Normally they would go on several trips to see the location to prepare, which this time they could not do. They only had a couple of weeks’ notice that they could film in France:
“a horrible way to put it together.”
“It was very tough” said Simon Curtis. “When we got there we had to quarantine for two weeks in a luxury hotel.
“I loved the film within a film” he said. “I loved the South of France and the honour of telling Violet’s final story. It was incredibly cathartic to see Violet given that great send off. It chimed with what we had all been through.”
Simon has been involved in the filming all through by dint of being married to Elizabeth McGovern, but Downton Abbey: A New Era was his first involvement professionally.
“They have known their characters for ten years” he said “so you can’t know them better than that.”
“It was so nice that you called us all individually and invited us for coffee to hear our thoughts” said Lesley Nicol. “It was really sweet.”
Asked the question would there be another film, Gareth Neame told us “we hope so.”
*The first Chiswick In Film festival was held from September 30 – October 2, 2022.
