I’m afraid I couldn’t wait! Christmas it still too far away! Has the ghost of Jane Austen has ever been spotted in Bath? When Jane Austen made Bath her home, from 1801 to 1806, the city was a thriving spa resort, popular with fashionable society. The elegant yet vibrant city provided inspiration for two of her six published novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion Jane Austen resided at a few properties during her time in Bath; The Paragon, Gay Street, Trim Street, Queen’s Square and Green Park buildings. But, the one that is most famous and has a placard outside of it is Number 4 Sydney place. She died on 18 July 1817 (aged 41) and is buried at Winchester Cathedral. A Victorian Villa with a Lady in Blue

A Victorian Villa with a Lady in Blue There is a beautiful Victorian Villa which stands within extensive grounds in an area close to the city centre Built possibly c1840, it appears for the first time on the 1844 map of Bath (House name and address withheld for privacy reasons)

During the 1930s & 1940's it gained the reputation of being haunted. The ghost of a lady was seen most frequently, wearing a blue dress and a bonnet, she had curly hair underneath her bonnet and she had a long nose and thin cheeks/ high cheekbones..

Whenever she did appear is was just fleetingly and to the observer she looked like she was bending down or dragging something which the witness could not see across the floor.

People in the house would also suddenly experience an extreme chill within the house, even when it was very hot weather outside. This was said to be associated with the spirit of an old man, who was never actually seen, so not sure how it was pinpointed as an old man?

The sounds of scratching outside bedroom doors was another phenomenon. as if something was trying to get into the room, although nothing ever made it into the rooms..

Research - On looking at the Bath Historical Directories, there is a lady who lived there called Louisa, in c1870, maybe its her? and a man lived there from 1875.

It would be interesting to know if this house still has activity...?

Lunch in Bath yesterday, comprised of several tapas dishes from Casa De Tapas. Located just a stones throw away from the Abbey, it is small, intimate and a friendly place to dine in. The dishes are all cooked fresh to order and have the discount, taste, smell and look of Spain. The menus is not too extensive but there’s something in there for everyone. They do have a designated vegetarian section to their menu which will obviously keep the sandal wearers happy! I had their octopus dish, cooked with fresh garlic and olive oil, served with soft potatoes. Not my favourite dish if I’m honest. I found the octopus a bit overpowering and as it was serve on a wooden board went stone cold in no time which made it inedible in the end. The accompaniment to the Octopus. Was the cheese and chorizo croquets. On paper sounded delicious. But practically a flop. I don’t know where the chorizo was? But it wasn’t in that croquet. The cheese filing was more like a paste and an under seasoned one at that! However, the rest of the meal was a delight. Packed full of flavour and very filling. The beef skewers were succulent and tasty. Beautifully cooked and heavenly. The patatas bravas were crunchy as they should be and the perfect amount of dressing on them. All in all this was a lovely lunch.
