Agony
What is agony right now is that I have not been able to practice since school shut down almost a month ago. I can’t sing in my apartment. It’s not that anyone has asked me to stop, it’s that there’s no way I could vocalize at full volume - let alone since my soprano rep. I was working on “Ach ich liebte” for my recital...that thing has like 300 high Ds in it. I can’t sing that here. My voice clamps up, and I know after a while somebody would probably say something. L and I are supposed to continue lessons but it’s just not going to happen here.
My goal is to do light, middle range vocalizing for 10-20 minutes daily, starting today. Something I’m comfortable with - humming, straw singing, short scales on [u] and [i]. I literally haven’t done even that in weeks.

***** for we three 'vocally and dramatically stunning soloists'. Not bad for my first opera since the 1990s. Age has finally - hopefully - settled my true singing voice. And I studied Hunding with the brilliant tenor also mentioned in the review, Peter Wedd - total privilege. #mondaymotivation #monday #review #opera #bass-baritone #wagner #walkure #classicalsinging #classicalmusic #singer #musician https://www.instagram.com/p/BzX2ACZgL1Y/?igshid=wp6dwd4j6kco

There are some interesting discussions happening right now about different vocal techniques. Is there “one true technique?” Does it depend on the singer? Have you find ways to healthily sing in multiple styles and genres? Todays guest list by @lukeonthedailey tackles these very questions! Give it a read. Tonight at 8pm CST (21:00 in La Paz, Bolivia)! Join pianist Masaru Sakuma and I at the @openclassical At Home Showcase for a double feature of Bolivian art song! (Link in comments) The first selection is “Kori Killa” (“Moon of Gold”) by Eduardo Caba (1890-1953) - a song of exuberant new love that is sung not only in Spanish but also features phrases in two indigenous languages of Bolivia, Quechua and Aymara. For the second offering we’re returning to the works of Antonio Ibáñez (1925-1970) with a gorgeous liedlike song of lost love, “Ensueño” (“Dream”). Both composers were inspired by and emulated the sound and spirit of indigenous pre-colonial traditional music of the Andes, which you can hear throughout “Kori Killa” and especially in the up-tempo section of “Ensueño.” See you at the show tonight!

That one about the spring opera.
I’m actually feeling physical grief right now about not being able to sing properly and not knowing when I will again. I started therapy Monday for the first time in 10 years and he’d better be ready for all my singer feelings, but until that comes out here is the place to deposit my emotions. Get ready for long story time.
We just got an email saying the spring opera, which was previously postponed to the first week of June, is on hold. I.E. most likely not happening. It’s not a surprise, but I wasn’t cast in a role, really. I was just in the chorus. Oh, forgot to mention the opera was Don Giovanni, which basically means no singing at all if you’re a female chorister, so the cancellation barely affects me in that regard. For the record (and the record of this blog should already show this), I don’t necessarily mind being in ensemble, it’s just that DG is probably one of the all-time least satisfying opera choruses to sing in. My running joke going into the semester was that the lead women characters are not the only girls getting screwed in this opera.
I was, however, cast as Donna Elvira’s maid, which was a little moment of having a “character” that I was enjoying. More importantly for my living expenses, I was hired to do the photography for the production as I’ve been doing for past semesters (yes, it’s complicated, maybe I’ll explain how that works another time).
Rewind to the beginning of the year, I was gutted that I wasn’t cast in a role. I had just come off of singing Queen of the Night last spring and thought I had proven myself. L and I knew that with DG being next year’s opera, Zerlina, the role most appropriate for me, would be the most competitive and maybe I should take a swing at Donna Anna instead - moreover, that the conductor also thought I could do it. When she first suggested that to me my literal reaction was “What the fuck?” When I think Donna Anna, I think Carol Vaness. That is not my voice. But going over it in my mind, as a comparative tactic it started to make sense. It was never a character I was drawn to but I spent the ENTIRE summer working on “Non mi dir” for the audition and nothing else. I fell in love with the role and the idea of singing it, even if I knew it wasn’t a perfect fit just yet. I really thought it was a real probability to get it...but I guess I already told you how it turned out.
Now, I know music isn’t fair. I never thought it was. But the opera directors decided to do this thing that was absolutely unheard of to anybody - student or faculty (and believe me, lots of them on the outside had WTF-style questions) - prior to this year: rather than the usual double cast, they quadruple casted. Except they only quadruple casted some roles, not all of them. For example, there were 4 Zerlinas...and only 2 Donna Annas.
Look, I don’t want to dwell on this any more than I have, especially since it doesn’t matter anymore. Let me make this clear: I’M NOT ENTITLED TO ANYTHING AND THIS WAS A ‘ME’ PROBLEM. I was wrong to think that just because my teacher or even the conductor thought I had a real shot that it was going to happen. I hold NO animosity for my classmates who were cast. They’re all (mostly) wonderful people. It’s the department that made odd choices that everyone I’ve spoken to agrees on. The main objection I had is that you either quadruple cast ALL roles, or tell some people “no.”
But the fact that the opera is not even happening, after all the work my classmates have put in up to now, is even more surreal. I feel bad for my friends. How can I be mad anymore that I didn’t get cast knowing now that I would be gutted now? It would almost feel worse than what happened with the McKinny masterclass I was supposed to be in 6 years ago. It’s crazy how things can change. After the goings-on this year (opera was not the only thing that surprised me), my mantra became “I don’t believe it until it’s in writing.” And now not even that is enough.
Anyway, this email says that now anyone in the cast can work (virtually) on any solo rep with the opera directors to build it up. And now that I can actually sing for these people...I can’t sing.
That’s fucking life.
But I need to be okay with the now, and have faith that it’s not over. That there’s a solution. That my voice is still in me.

Taking a moment at the start of a week... Starting the week with a glossy mag interview. Sewing old shoes ready for the Phoeinix Arts Club. But mainly I've been stoked at the reaction to my opera self-tape. Ta, loves. The consensus is I audition for state agents in Germany to be placed in a house there. I'm preparing King Mark, Sarastro, Gremin and Phillipe ii. All new. One sitting down. (Hooray!) Wishing all a good, kind, week. #opera#bassbaritone#practise#amsinging#singing#classicalsinger#classicalsinging#mondaymood#mondaymotivation#motivation#goals#goalsetting https://www.instagram.com/p/B7QLc3Ygaa1/?igshid=scl3timj232x

TL;DR
Simply put, Nikoyle Noel is a music duo that consists of Da'Kneisha Nikoyle Blount and Justin Noel Hall. Our instruments are voice and piano, and we perform a fusion of hip-hop and classical music. Lastly, we want to get to a position where we can hold concerts and use a portion of the proceeds to fund scholarships for young Black musicians covering their cost of buying instruments, paying for private lessons and college audition fees, etc. Donate here.

The Full Story
There’s a conversation going on within the classical music community that concerns itself with the lack of racial and gender diversity with personnel both on and off stage. Although women have made significant strides as conductors, musicians and composers, we’re not seeing enough music written by Black composers played by orchestras and chamber groups.
In a system that continues to place the music of 18th-century European musicians in the forefront, we’ve chosen to compose and perform original works of art that share Black stories told from Black perspectives to relate classical music to Black audiences and foster a desire to study music amongst young black students. Think of this as Tupac meets Bach...
#tupacmeetsbach
This is a way for us to reach the minds of Black kids who may have never thought of picking up an instrument, perhaps a violin or piano, but because of the connection to music they listen to and the music their parents listen to, we can begin that dialogue and entertain the possibility of these students being "classical" musicians. I use classical in quotations because the aim isn't to foster Black kids that play only traditional classical music, but also learn how to improvise, play jazz and r&b, and use the fullness of their lived experience in their playing and expression.
In addition to our GoFundMe campaign, please take a look at our Patreon to support us monthly. You can subscribe as a patron and contribute $250, $500 or $1,000 which allows you to receive an Associate Producer, Producer or Executive Producer credit in our music videos!
Through this project, we will create scholarships for young musicians to provide them instruments, cover the cost of private lessons, pay for college audition fees, etc. However, we need your help to do so.
Together, let us inspire and cultivate the next generation of “classical” musicians.
