This was my mall when I was a kid/teen. It was the third space for so many people i knew. I had so much fun here. Now it’s almost dead. This video is a about a year old, and now they don’t even light up one wing of the mall anymore. It’s sad.

on the one hand I do understand where people are coming from when they respond to The White American Desire For Authentic Culture by going "you already have a culture" and pointing out that this desire often has reactionary undertones
that being said, I think it's largely sidestepping the actual issue, which is that American culture fucking blows chunks. American culture is strip malls and military worship and the elevation of mass-market pablum to Bold Artistic Statements.
and subculture is only partially an escape from this, because most subcultures exist within the same constraints of American culture as a whole; they are captured and redefined by capital on such a frequent basis that it often feels impossible to hold onto them in any meaningful way.
moreover, even the parts of American culture that aren't complete garbage are more or less inextricable from the colonial, imperialist, and racially-stratified history of the country. like, I think of that post that went around a while ago talking about "America sucks but has some good parts," and one of the things it listed was national parks, and people (rightfully!) pointed out that the national park system is fundamentally flawed and tends to shit on indigenous nations by design.
the only thing I can think of that's even sort of an exception is pop culture - jazz and rock music, superhero comics, Hollywood. and all of those are, again, captured and defined by capital, and in one way or another have historically been built on screwing over the artist.
so we come to a position, one way or another, where a lot of people say something like: "I'm alienated. I'm surrounded by traditions and institutions I think are shit; I have no way to meaningfully undermine them, and I can't escape them without effectively destroying my life. the culture I was born into is a gravestone on top of another gravestone, lifeless and miserable, and people are constantly shouting that I should be grateful because it's The Greatest Country In The World."
at that point, one seeks an escape, and I think there are three major routes here.
one is to become a weird lib obsessed with the Real Soul Of America. America is really about the good parts, not the bad parts which outnumber them and which they are built upon.
another is to fixate on the Exotic, for lack of a better word. cultures which you do not have an obvious "connection" to, but which fascinate you or appeal to you. obviously this can be pretty fucking fraught, though I would argue that taking an interest in other cultures is a good thing if you aren't shitty about it. (That's its own conversation.)
the third is to fixate on the culture(s) you feel you "ought to have" had, that which was sacrificed on the altar of whiteness by grandparents or great-grandparents who, frankly, had different concerns. to look at a culture that may still be defined in many ways by cruelty and stratification - the way I would argue most human civilization has been - but that seems to have had something else going on, at least. a culture that may not have been recognizable 500 years ago, but at least it existed.
again, none of these impulses is beyond criticism, and I think it would be naive to say that the last one can't have reactionary undertones. I also doubt these impulses are unique to the USA! alienation is extremely common in today's world, and it's not as though the USA is the only settler state in existence.
what I am saying is more that I think the conditions that lead to these fixations are worth paying attention to, and that dismissing them with "you already have a culture" kind of misses the point in favor of getting in a zinger. people wouldn't want a different culture if they were happy with the one they had. like so many other things, people want one that Doesn't Completely Suck. failing that, they'd probably like to not be defined by any culture at all - but that, tragically, is just as impossible.

Do you remember this post of McDonald’s takeover of a former Art Deco hotel in Australia? Disappointingly, the interior was reno’d to look like a typical McDonalds. Well, here are some other buildings that McD’s should have left alone.
Tumblr media
McDonald’s Paris. The building dates back to 1892 and is a listed historic monument.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They took over this old steamboat on the Mississippi river in St. Louis, Missouri. It closed after flooding.
Tumblr media
They opened the McBarge, that they built for the World Expo in Vancouver, Canada.
Tumblr media
It was abandoned after the Expo.
Tumblr media
This one, in an old theater on 42nd St. in New York City also closed down.  McDonald’s did not respond to questions about the fate of the 7,000 light bulbs that comprise the restaurant’s sign.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one in Independence, Ohio looks like a McMansion, but it must’ve been a mall or some sort of industrial building.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one’s more elegant inside.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The one in the spectacular Galleria Emanuelle Vittori, Milan, Italy’s oldest shopping mall, built in 1861, was there  20 yrs., when the mall finally refused to renew its lease- they were the only tenants that were denied. McDonald’s has sued the city of Milan (their landlord) for €24 million in damages and were replaced by the mall’s 2nd Prada store.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When they bought the Denton House, in New Hyde Park, New York, the 1795 Georgian mansion, a former farmhouse and funeral home, was on the verge of collapse. They had planned to knock it down, but the locals complained, so it’s been made an historic site and they can’t demolish it.
Tumblr media
Yangshuo, province of Guangxi, China, famous for its amazing karst landscape and a haven for rock-climbers and backpackers from all over the world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
An 1850s Greek Revival colonial and former sea captain’s house in Freeport, Maine. They were going to knock to this one down, but residents complained.
Tumblr media
Kristiansand, Norway. It dates back to 1897 and looks like it probably used to be a bank.
Tumblr media
In Landau, Germany, McDonald’s set up shop in one of the finest examples of handsome Bavarian historic architecture. The 15th century historic building still has its original stepped gables and colorful facades.
Tumblr media
A New York townhouse on Canal Street, New York. Is this McDonald’s trying to be hipster? What makes them choose these buildings? Who knows.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You spent a lifetime trying to make sense of the feeling Choso has struck in you. You finally grasp what it is one summer day when you're back in your small town.
CW : suggestive, mention of choking and implied masturbation
Tumblr media
You like Choso a lot. It wasn't always the case, though.
For as long as you remember, Choso lurked around your neighbourhood and trailed by the white picket fence bordering your yard. The first emotion he struck in you was unease. His being the older brother of your lifelong best friend couldn't soothe the visceral restlessness you felt around him.
You'd try to steal glances at him whenever he dropped little Yuuji to your place for a playdate, hoping you were stealthy in your quiet inspection of him. Naturally, you were anything but, because Choso always knew when you were looking at him quizzically and, when your wide eyes lingered on him for a tad too long, he'd mirror your stare with a lackadaisical gaze of his own. It was enough to keep you at bay, your eyes immediately dropping to your lap or fleeting to Yuuji in search of a reprieve. It was enough until it wasn't.
It was enough when you were a small child and when you mistakenly believed that what you felt whenever Choso was around was mere nervousness.
You thought the older boy's tall frame, always draped in back, painfully contrasted with the blinding white of your fence and the bright colours of your small town. Life was full of shades of green and blue in the artificial turf on everyone's laws and their chlorine-saturated pools, specks of blue and red on the porch of every colonial-style house, blinding streaks of neon pinks and limes at the mall - the only attraction in your otherwise quiet town, where Choso had driven you and Yuuji countless times. That's also where you had an epiphany.
Choso doesn't make you uneasy because he scares you, you think to yourself as you watch him pull into the parking lot of the busy mall. He doesn't scare you but he makes something unpleasant flare in the small space between your ribs until it becomes too big and has to flood your mind and slowly creep into your gut. That feeling has no name for now, because it's fleeting.
But in the backseat of Choso's car, on an unbearably hot summer day, the feeling comes at you like never before when your eyes settle on his bare arms.
One of Choso's arms is resting on the back of Yuuji's headrest, while his other hand has a firm grip on the steering wheel. He's trying to park his car, you think, but you're not sure anymore because Yuuji's chattering, the clamour of the shoppers coming and going outside, even the low hum of the radio fall to the background. The only thing you hear is Choso's exasperated huff when he tries to squeeze his old Wrangler in the last available spot. The only thing you see is his hands - long, deft fingers gripping the wheel so tight his knuckles turn white. The sole thing on your mind is the shameful extrapolation of that sound, of that sight :  a vision of his lithe fingers flexing around your throat while Choso lets out a deep grunt above you. You came to find that no matter how reprehensible you think that fantasy is, it still haunted your lonely nights and made you whimper Choso’s name, shame only whetting your arousal.
You spend the rest of that day following the brothers around on shaky legs. You do a fine job of pretending that your flushed cheeks and the light sheen of sweat covering your face are from the heat whenever Yuuji asks if you're okay. You're good at pretending until you're in Choso's car again, driving back home.
Everyone's a little tired, and Yuuji is quickly lulled to sleep by the soft hum of the radio. Your conversation with Choso dwindles down like it always does when Yuuji isn't involved. Not because he's expected to contribute - Choso and you always fall into a rhythm, an incessant back-and-forth that requires no outside input. Yuuji only has to bear witness to it, it's a tacit agreement between you and Choso. You don't think you can speak or be left with him unsupervised, lest something happens. That's why you opt to pretend to be sleeping too, craning your neck to the side and resting your cheek against the cool leather of your seat, eyes closed.
Choso looks at you through his rear view mirror and scoffs at the unconvincing show you're putting on - he sees the way your eyelids flutter against your rosy cheeks, the subtle quiver of your spit-licked lips and the nervous twitch of your brows. He takes pity on you after a while, taking you out of your misery with an amused voice "I know you're not sleeping so why are you even pretending ?". You mouth out a 'fuck' that earns you a tut from him, but you still open your eyes and turn to face his blasé expression in the rear view mirror. You feel it again, then - it's in your ribcage and the cold sweat running down your spine, it steadily boils in your lower stomach. "I wasn't pretending, I was trying to sleep" You mumble unconvincingly, eyes falling to Choso's hand on the gearstick - so, so big and unbelievably pretty.
"You can never sleep in the car, squirt" He reminds you, voice impassive but the nickname betrays everything his tone conceals. It makes you cringe and wrinkle your nose, "Stop calling me names, Cho', I'm not a kid anymore". He only smiles a little at you and hums, "Old habits die hard, sorry".
You want to bicker with him a little more but your retort dies on your tongue when your eyes meet his again in the mirror. This time his gaze is anything but tame and his face twists in an unreadable expression, brows furrowed and lips pursed. "You're far from being a kid now, aren't you ?", he repeats with a solemnity that makes you clench your thighs together and bite your lip. You're staring again, and he's staring right back in a way that seems to say ‘will you back down like you always have, will you avert your gaze ?’ . You don't, mostly because he’s just so handsome you don’t want to pass on the chance to stare at his sun saturated profile after months of not seeing him, but also because it feels like a test of some sort. Choso smiles at you languidly and it feels like you’ve passed his test when he lets out a deep laugh and confirms ,“You’re all grown up now”.
That feeling is back again - it's in the warmth of your face, the heat in your ribcage but it burns the hottest between your thighs. You can finally pinpoint what it is : it's a feverish and visceral want that only Choso can sate.

in the notes of that there are a couple things people are referencing that are worth a closer look.
some people are talking about the “”””minimalist”“““ style you see on hgtv shows where they buy up old homes and strip them and remake them into something resembling a home goods advertisment. this is not because of some inherent failing in “modern design”. this is because of gentrification, and poor and black people are the ones who suffer the most as a result. here’s a podcast about it.
another thing people are mentioning is the generic, empty feeling of the chain store and the strip mall and the parking lot. These spaces created by capitalism have been referred to as “non-places”, "spaces where concerns of relations, history, and identity are erased.“ Especially on colonized land like the USA, this “placeless” quality of capitalist architecture is a tool of ongoing colonialism, distancing people from the land and therefore from the history of violent colonialism.
fascists might try to take advantage of your frustration with these problems but it is vital you recognize they do not have the real solutions to these problems. They’ll never care about the colonized and marginalized people these things harm the most. You need to recognize that when a fascist says to you, “you know that problem you’ve noticed? I have a solution.” they don’t have a real solution, all they have is authoritarian violence.

Real Estate Evolution In India!
Real estate, a constantly changing market, has a rich history and complex evolution. Although understanding its journey is challenging due to numerous factors, I will attempt to provide a simplified overview of the real estate sector in India. Let's explore its fascinating evolution without further ado!
Early years:
Tumblr media
The real estate sector in India underwent significant transformations during the post-independence period. The government played a crucial role by implementing policies and undertaking various projects to meet the housing demands of the population. Special residential houses and colonies were constructed to cater specifically to government employees, equipped with essential amenities like schools, parks, and hospitals.
Another noteworthy development during this era was the introduction of public housing projects. As there was a shortage of residential spaces in major cities, the government initiated these projects, which greatly improved the living conditions for people. Additionally, land reforms were implemented in the 1950s and 1960s to benefit farmers and enhance rural life. These reforms included land allocation to landless farmers.
In summary, the post-independence period in India witnessed the establishment of government housing for employees, public housing projects, and land reforms aimed at improving housing conditions and supporting agricultural communities.
Urban Planning and Infrastructure:
Tumblr media
During the post-independence period in India, there was a strong emphasis on the development and modernization of cities, which involved the implementation of infrastructure plans. These plans included the construction of bridges, ports, improved road networks, and other initiatives aimed at enhancing transportation and connectivity across the country. As a result, urban centers emerged, and the improved infrastructure contributed to the overall economic growth of India. Additionally, these developments created new employment opportunities in cities.
Basically, from the 1950s to the 1970s, the Indian government primarily focused on public housing as a key priority. However, in the subsequent years, there were significant shifts in priorities and approaches to the real estate sector.
1980s-1990s:
The 1980s to 1990s marked a significant shift in the Indian real estate sector. It witnessed the rise of private housing, attracting prominent businesses and entrepreneurs to the market. This era also saw the diversification of real estate into different sectors, including commercial and luxury properties. People began to view real estate as an investment opportunity, prioritizing their comfort and luxury.
Tumblr media
During this time, several benefits of investing in real estate became evident:
Value Appreciation: Real estate investments had the potential for value appreciation over time, making it a favorable asset compared to other investment options.
Long-Term Security: Real estate provides stability and long-term security, offering a reliable and protected investment option.
Multiple Income Sources: Real estate investments could generate additional income through rental properties. The emergence of companies like Getsethome's 'Xtra Income Homes’, allowed property owners to earn rental income, with returns as high as 7%.
The 1980s to 1990s were transformative for the real estate industry in India, shaping the perception of real estate as an investment avenue and offering various advantages to investors. Let's now explore further developments in the subsequent years in the real estate realm.
Liberalization in the 1990s brought significant changes to the Indian real estate industry.
Tumblr media
The government implemented measures to remove restrictive regulations, leading to rapid expansion and growth. This resulted in the emergence of large-scale real estate projects like IT parks, shopping malls, and commercial developments. The real estate landscape underwent a transformative shift, creating new avenues for development and prosperity.
Digitization has also played a crucial role in reshaping the real estate industry. Online platforms have made property search, buying, and selling more convenient and streamlined. Buyers can now easily access information about properties and make informed decisions.
The Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act (RERA), introduced in 2016, has had a significant impact on the real estate sector. It aims to protect the rights of buyers and sellers and promote transparency in the industry.
The Covid-19 pandemic presented challenges to the real estate industry, but it also brought about unexpected positive outcomes. The experience of the pandemic shifted people's mindset towards the importance of homeownership, leading to increased interest in real estate investment. As a result, the industry quickly rebounded in 2022.
Tumblr media
In conclusion, the real estate market is dynamic and continuously evolving. Real estate investment remains a reliable and secure option. If you are considering investing in real estate, it is advisable to take prompt action and secure your own property in this diverse and ever-changing industry.

New look. New style. New stores.
This is the unfulfilled promise of a $77 million renovation started at Harrisburg Mall in 2004. The ambitious project sought to solidify the mall's status as the dominant shopping center in the Harrisburg area, bringing in all new decor, a 14-screen cinema, and a new "streetscape" lifestyle shopping area around the outside of the building. Projected to finish in 2008, the recession that year threw the project off-track. The "streetscape" stores were left in a half-finished state and never were occupied by tenants. That same year, mall anchor Boscov's went bankrupt and closed their store at Harrisburg Mall, seen in the background of this picture, never having been replaced. The mall owner shortly thereafter defaulted on the mall's $52.5 million mortgage. In 2020, both the theater and the mall's only other department store, Macy's, closed. Though a healthy number of stores remain, they tend to be lower-end. The smaller nearby Capital City Mall has taken the mantle as Harrisburg's premiere shopping mall, leaving both the Harrisburg Mall and the Colonial Park Mall in the dust.

Bits and bytes from the Box au! (Also the ones that I didn't add!)
Bluebella Twiggse the bluebell bonsai, Cori Blossom the blueberry bonsai and Jinxonica the Japanese Camellia bonsai aren't actually from the mall or the gardening store, but rather a secret colony deep in the woods, where they get all the sunlight they can have and never interact with the humans. BT left the colony to seek fame outside of her colony (just like Mirrorglow Majesty). While CB wanted to keep things in order (whatever that means). Jinxonica wanted to seek a "wizard" to help her with her magic.
Marcus was originally supposed to be a police officer. He's supposed to sympathize with Dave and help him. He's supposed to also have this detective role and get to the bottom of mysteries (But after watching a funny TikTok, I changed it). Of course that personality is now given to Raven, she's also supposed to be 12, in a club called the "superstition club".
Gabby was supposed to be working alone in a gardening store (which was originally named "Eden Greenhouse"), and her mom is barely present. And the store was also originally a cafe. Gabby wasn't really supposed to be a Cyborg, but over time, I gradually liked the idea!
There's supposed to be a character nicknamed "Beanie". His role is supposed to keep Penz-eye out off fights (she was originally aggressive and hothead even to humans).
Sabine was supposed to work for the government in a way...
Originally, the Taurus Tech facility story was super dark. There were supposed to be both human and cybertronian experimentations. (But being a good friend for Bloom, I changed it) like I really don't want redeemable characters.
Shutter's facility designation was originally called "Lilith". But I realized that associating her as the actual Lilith, the she-demon isn't really right, but Eve fits for what I imagined Shutter to be in the story.
She's also more human in my head, with exposed lungs and intestines.
There was also a part where she stabs Bumblebee repeatedly after Sideswipe triggers her too much.
There were a lot of chase scenes that I got rid of. There's one with Ava, zombie cybertronians and Shutter's minicons.
Gabby was supposed to bring back the security robot and attach them into the house.
Enma was supposed to be evil.
About "Gretchen" the secret botbot city goddess, it's not really complicated but still sad. She's actually one of Shutter's crew members, who unfortunately died.
Dr Janet was supposed to bring a Zweihänder with her.
Dave was supposed to strangle Melachole (in self defense) and fall down a flight off stairs with him. And the gag was supposed to be comedic as the stairs just look like it's never ending.
Shooting stars were supposed to have a bigger role in the Box au.
Cosmopatty is a primordial being from space.
The Mega Pizzaplex botbots were supposed to be lost children souls, but that's too much.
The first Rottentron encounter was supposed to be in this "Mirror room", where it shows different versions of the characters.
Fanfictionus was supposed to return to the Archive as a human sized, Hawaiian shirt wearing transformer Divine.
The time wraith is supposed to be either Bonz-eye or Lady Macaron. But I realized it's going to be too complicated.
Gabby was supposed to learn about the secrets by a video tape left in the facility.
Kabiguan was supposed to show Gabby the room where he was made.
Dr Rue/ Noxweaver was supposed to make an appearance the very moment Gabby and Box came deeper down into the facility.
There are supposed to be more secret botbot colonies like a floating city and an underground city.
There was supposed to be an indirect kiss for Bryce and Penz-eye, taking place in a festival.
In the "biscuits in the rain" story, the original ending was supposed to be, Bryce and Penz-eye stepped out of the convenience store, before Bryce entered his mom's car, he asked Penz-eye, "Are you actually a real human?", Shocking Penz-eye.
Kat was supposed to work at a food truck in the park.
Joseph and Connor (Gabby's relatives) are going to have a bigger role!
There were three of the Taurus kids, Kabiguan, Leo and Gabby. But I got rid of Leo.
Burgertron was supposed to lose an arm and a leg...
The Park Party leader was a tree that's the center of the park, but I gave that position to Skitternutter.
The Beast Buffet had an antagonistic role in the Au.
And most importantly, het llam si ytcllaua a tinat!

What’s Coming up in Public Art
Over the next few years, we’re thrilled to be welcoming several new public artworks to Edmonton’s Public Art Collection. Along with previously announced pieces by Sanaz Mazinani for the new downtown greenspace Warehouse Park (in development) and by Michelle Sound for the TELUS Transit stop, Edmonton will soon be home to new works by some fascinating local and national artists, including Jordan Bennett, Sans façon, Shaheer Zazai, Ruth Cuthand, Morgan Melenka, and Michelle Campos Castillo – all in connection with the new Valley Line West LRT expansion. Also in the works is a new public art commission by artist Becca Taylor for the TELUS World of Science – Edmonton.
The artists are all putting the Edmonton Arts Council’s (EAC) new approach to public art into action from start to finish. The re-envisioned approach is guided by the City of Edmonton policy, "Public Art to Enhance Edmonton’s Public Realm”, and its principles concerning public visibility and accessibility, diversity and inclusion, public art appreciation, and city-wide impact. The shift began with the EAC's work on the Indigenous Art Park, ᐄᓃᐤ (ÎNÎW) River Lot 11 ∞, shares Public Art Director David Turnbull: “with it, we changed the way we work, to think beyond contract management and to really question what our responsibility is to the citizens of Edmonton and to the growth and development of the public art collection.”
These new commissions will have strong ties to the communities they occupy. Artists are no longer selected based on their preconceived ideas for a project, Turnbull says, “we now ask artists to begin projects by outlining their creative processes and their approach to research and engagement with community stakeholders.” The EAC's work to build strong relationships in the community is critical, says Turnbull, “by the time an artist comes into a project, they should be entering a receptive community that is expecting them.”
The new responsive processes are helping to build a high-quality public art collection that is relevant and representative of Edmonton’s diverse communities. These purposeful steps work to address the collection's under-representation of Indigenous artists, as well as artists from diverse genders and cultural backgrounds. The new processes will also help to address systemic barriers faced by artists from marginalized, racialized and equity-seeking groups which prevent them from becoming involved in public art.
Read on to learn more about the artists behind several exciting new public art commissions coming to Edmonton.

Jordan Bennett is a Mi’kmaq visual artist from Stephenville Crossing, Ktaqamkuk, Newfoundland. Jordan's ongoing practice utilizes painting, sculpture, video, installation, and sound to explore land, language, the act of visiting, familial histories and challenging colonial perceptions of Indigenous histories and presence with a focus on exploring Mi’kmaq and Beothuk visual culture of Ktaqamkuk.
In the past 10 years Bennett has participated in over 90 group and solo exhibitions nationally and internationally in venues such as the Smithsonian-National Museum of the American Indian, NYC; MAC-VAL, Paris; The Museum of Art and Design, NYC, NY; Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, Santa Fe, NM; Project Space Gallery, RMIT, Melbourne, AUS; and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.

Sans façon: Valley Line West - Misericordia Station
Tumblr media
Limelight: Saturday night by Sans façon. 2010-ongoing. Photo credit Sans façon. Selected artist collective: Sans façon Public art project site: Valley Line West - Misericordia Station, 169 Street & 87 Avenue  Anticipated project install date: 2024
Sans façon is creating three works for the Valley Line West - Misericordia Station. “It is our intention that notions of compassion run, in different and complementary ways, through all of the components of the work", says Sans façon, "the art itself is the conduit for public encounters with the notion of compassion. Three expressions will take form: two will be permanent and tangible and the third expression will lay the social and contextual foundation for the permanent works through storytelling.
Sans façon works internationally on projects ranging from large scale permanent artworks and temporary installations in public spaces to collaborating with design teams on major infrastructure projects or developing and implementing city-wide strategies involving artists in discourse with a city. Much of their work tempts interaction with the surroundings and is developed in close collaboration with communities, corporations, and individuals including city councils, scholars, architects, engineers, and designers.
Over the last two decades, Sans façon has established a model of integrating art and artists as part of a holistic approach for projects of all scales, allowing art to work in concert with the vision of the wider project, engaging people and animating the specific character and quality of each place they work with.
The busy Calgary-based duo has current projects throughout North America and internationally including Art in Parks, a permanent installation with Steve Gurysh in Pittsburgh; Al Masar, five permanent and temporary works, and art planning with el dorado architects in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Monument to Rain, a permanent installation, exploring our relationship to the dynamic environment in Georgetown, Seattle.
Note: On November 24, 2022, as part of the Art Gallery of Alberta's monthly free night, Sans façon is providing a guided scent tour from 5 - 6 pm.

Rendering of Michelle Campos Castillo’s project Agua.
Local artist Michelle Campos Castillo has been commissioned to create a design for the Valley Line West - 87 Avenue guideway ramps at 164 Street.
“As a guest on Treaty 6 territory, I’m most concerned in honouring the land and its inhabitants,” says Campos Castillo. “My approach to developing concepts always carries the spirit of migrants and refugees with me, while appreciating the beautiful landscape of Indigenous territory. I challenged myself to think beyond my own Salvadorean culture and embody the journey of all migrants. I thought of the distances we all travelled to land in Amiskwaciwahikan; some of us crossed oceans. At the same time, I think of my favourite place in the city, the river valley, and the way the river runs across the city and the way this body of water unites us locally.”
Michelle Campos Castillo is a Salvadoran visual artist living in Edmonton. She has been the recipient of several public art commissions from the City of Edmonton, including Platanos, a set of three sculptures on permanent display at Belvedere Transit Centre, and Dream, a recently finalized artwork for the Stadium LRT station (along with fellow local artists Tiffany Shaw, Becca Taylor, Shawn Tse and Christina Battle). Her most recent exhibits are a solo show, Terremoto, presented in the summer of 2022 at grunt gallery in Vancouver, BC and as part of Imborrable at the National Gallery in San Salvador, El Salvador. She is currently working on a graphic novel memoir titled Colonia, based on her life in El Salvador during the country’s civil war.
Morgan Melenka: Valley Line West - Aldergrove Park Elevated Guideway Ramp
Selected artist: Morgan Melenka  Public art project site: 87 Avenue Guideway Ramp at Aldergrove Park and 182 Street Anticipated project install date: 2024
Tumblr media
Rendering of Morgan Melanka's project. 3D render by Jordan Polanski.
Morgan Melenka has a close connection with the site that she has been commissioned to design artwork. Melenka’s designs for the Valley Line West guideway ramp at 87 Avenue and 182 Street are informed by the architecture of Aldergrove, the neighborhood she grew up in. The imagery, Melenka says “is a collage of building materials and styles from the area, including brick arches, vinyl siding, and mansard roofs. The geometry of this work results in a strong visual pattern, akin to the experience of moving through Aldergrove, and reflects familiar forms and shapes that informed my understanding of space as a child.”
Morgan Melenka is a visual artist based in Mohkinstsis (Calgary) who grew up in Treaty 6. She engages with sculpture and printmaking as she reproduces, modifies, and misuses familiar architectural forms and materials to engage with the world of architecture. She holds an MFA from NSCAD University and has exhibited in Canada and the US including New York, Nebraska, and Tennessee. Her recent exhibitions include: Nonsuch at SNAP Gallery; the Scene at the Art Gallery of Alberta; The Works Art & Design Festival, moveObjects On at the Plumb, Toronto; and There are no walls, only shimmering membranes as part of SAAG Art Library Project.
