Ben Reilly Post-Clone Saga Reading Order
Tumblr media
Ben hasn’t been up to much since Revelations, the arc that brought an end to The Clone Saga, probably because he died. But he did show up in a few flashbacks and nods before being brought back proper.
Bold=Important Italics=optional [Brackets=one-shot]
Brand New Day
ASM Annual 36, ASM 608-610 — Also features the first appearance of Kaine since the Clone Saga ended. I considered adding all of Kaine’s appearances because of the overlap but that’s a big list by itself. I wasn’t planning on doing one but does anyone want it?
Spider-Verse
An alternate universe version of him is part of the clone trio in this tie-in, totally skippable but the lineup is great (Ben, Kaine, Ultimate Jessica Drew) and the brotherly bickering is fun. The plot is somewhat self-contained enough to enjoy it even without the rest of the event.
Scarlet Spiders 1-3
The Clone Conspiracy
This is his big return. If you don’t care about the tangential stuff you can just start here. There are 2 chunks, the first is basically a prelude arc, second is the real thing.
ASM (V4) 16-18, [Captain America FCBD (2016) B story], ASM 19
Clone Conspiracy 1, ASM 20, CC 2, ASM 21, CC 3, ASM 22, CC 4, ASM 23, CC 5, ASM 24, [CC Omega]
Scarlet Spider: Ben Reilly
Tumblr media
After the events of Clone Conspiracy he peaces out to Vegas. This title starts slow but around issue 7 it really kicks into gear. Stick with it.
SS 1-6
Secret Empire -- This isn’t about Ben but it has an effect on Vegas that is followed up in Ben’s story. For an idea of how crucial it is, I still haven’t read it and got along fine.
SS 7-14
Damnation 1, 2
SS 15
Damnation 3
SS 16, 17
Damnation 4
SS 18-25
Spider-Geddon
After SS: BR is cancelled he next appears in this crossover. I made a post just for it that you can find by clicking on the name above.
Team-Ups
Random appearances that don’t progress his story in any way.
Conan: Battle for the Serpent Crown 2 — He shows up, gets smacked around, and is never seen again. Literally in 5 pages.
Iron Man (V6) 5-? — This story and his being part of it is still ongoing, but presumably when finished it’ll count as having happened before his Beyond stuff. As far as relevant he’s barely there or has any lines, but he does have some good ones in the latest issue (13.)
Beyond
ASM/Venom FCBD 2021 — As Marvel has done with the title since BND, this new era (dubbed Beyond) begins with a free comic book day issue before continuing in the main 3-issues-a-month title.
ASM (V5) 74 — V5 (Spencer’s run) never includes Ben until the last 8 pages of 74, a teaser for Ben’s run, which officially starts with 75.
Tumblr media
And that’s where we are at the moment. If you have questions, corrections or suggestions feel free to message me or ask.

Do you have any Sharon/Steve comic recommendations?
I DO!!!!!
i think in general i tend to not recommend 60s comics because i find them a slog. all you have to know to start reading them on my rec list is that sharon was presumed dead but was really trapped behind enemy lines bc nick fury left her there.
-Captain America v1 449-453 -Captain America v3 -Captain America v5 -Captain America v6 -Secret Avengers v1
v3 has definitely grown to be my fave bc of that whole pining dynamic lmao

hi!! first off, thank you so much for all the comics advice you provide, they're utterly amazing and are really appreciated!! I have a question regarding the last comic ask you answered: are the comics you mentioned in chronological order? you see, I've been trying to figure out the order for some time, and i would be really grateful if you could help me out 💕
It’s sort of mostly chronological? It’s complicated, because most of the volumes start and stop at the same place but this is not always the case; I was also trying to figure out a way to list the events. As it is, the way things are listed there, I don’t differentiate between runs that start at the same time as other runs and events that happen within runs.
It would be really useful if there were a timeline (I feel like someone must have drawn one) but this is the best I can do with just text:
AVENGERS:
Avengers v1 (1963)
Avengers v2 (1996)
Avengers v3 (1998)
New Avengers v1 (2005) & Mighty Avengers v1 (2007)
Avengers v4 (2010) & New Avengers v2 (2010)
Avengers v5 (2013) & New Avengers v3 (2013)
Avengers v6 (2015) #0
All-New All-Different Avengers (2016)
Avengers v7 (2017)
Avengers v8 (2018)
TALES OF SUSPENSE:
Tales of Suspense v1 (1959)
Tales of Suspense v2 (1995) #1
CAPTAIN AMERICA:
Captain America v1 (1968)
Captain America v2 (1996)
Captain America v3 (1998)
Captain America v4 (2002)
Captain America v5 (2005)
Captain America v6 (2011)
Captain America v7 (2013)
Captain America: Sam Wilson (2015) & Captain America: Steve Rogers (2016)
Captain America v8 (2017) #25
Captain America #695-704  (2017)
Captain America v9 (2018)
IRON MAN:
Iron Man v1 (1968)
Iron Man v2 (1996)
Iron Man v3 (1998)
Iron Man v4 (2005)
Invincible Iron Man v1 (2008)
Iron Man v5 (2013)
Superior Iron Man (2015)
Invincible Iron Man v2 (2015) & International Iron Man (2016)
Invincible Iron Man v3 (2017) & Infamous Iron Man (2016)
Tony Stark: Iron Man (2018)
The Marvel wiki will sometimes use different year numbers from AO3 – for example, AO3 has Avengers vol 5 as 2012, not 2013. It has to do with street date vs actual recorded publication date, I think, and those differ. Also the volume numbering of Iron Man on the wiki is currently EXTREMELY WRONG and has decided that Invincible Iron Man starts literally in the middle of the Director of SHIELD run so all their volume numbers are off by one. I have fixed it in my list.
So you can kind of see from the years how they link up. There were Cap comics in the 40s and 50s (the 50s Cap has been retconned as not Steve); Tales of Suspense started in the 50s, but Tony only showed up in 1963, a couple months before Avengers started. Steve shows up in the modern era in Avengers  #4. Start reading Tales of Suspense at #39 (1963), the first appearance of Iron Man; at #58 Cap joins the book, and it ends at #99 and splits into Cap and IM, Cap keeps the numbering and starts at #100, in 1968. After that volume 1 of Avengers, Cap, and IM keep running until the mid-90s.
Marvel didn’t really invent events until the original Secret Wars, in the mid-80s. Operation Galactic Storm, from the early 90s, is probably the biggest event from a Steve/Tony perspective; this is the Kree Supreme Intelligence stuff. Then volume 1 ends with The Crossing and Onslaught, which… um. Yeah.
Volume 2 of Avengers/Cap/IM runs simultaneously for about a year. Mostly we don’t talk about this. Definitely read the Tales of Suspense one-shot which came out about now, though.
Volume 3 of Avengers/Cap/IM start at the same time, in 1998, after the whole Onslaught mess is over. Cap v3 and v4 fit into the same space of time as the entire v3 runs of Avengers and IM, so Cap v4 – which is post-9/11 – ends at the same time as Avengers/IM v3, which is where the numbering starts to stop syncing. There aren’t really any major events within v3 other than small crossovers like Live Kree or Die, until you get to Disassembled at the end, which basically wrecks everything.
The next start we get is New Avengers v1/Cap v5/IM v4, in 2005. This is basically the “Civil War up to Steve’s resurrection” era, although I guess House of M happens before CW, if you want to read House of M. This is when Bendis starts writing every Avengers book known to man. CW starts about one or two dozen issues in, depending on title (they don’t start quite at the same time). Mighty Avengers v1 starts after Civil War, and if you’re following along with events, you then want to read The Initiative, Secret Invasion, Dark Reign, and Siege as you go along. IM has a variety of writers and has Extremis (at the beginning) as well as the Director of SHIELD run. Cap v5 is the Brubaker run, and it’s mostly about Bucky. Captain America does some weird renumbering back to vol 1 #600 at the end of vol 5 and then goes on a bit and then (when Steve is Cap again) moves to a team-up book (Captain America & x) for a few issues, running simultaneously (as far as I know) with the beginning of Cap v6. Steve is alive again at the end of Siege.
Next, it’s Avengers v4/Secret Avengers v1/Invincible IM v1 in about 2010. Look for banners that say Heroic Age. And start with Avengers Prime. The Avengers is still Bendis. These three don’t exactly sync. Invincible (this is Fraction’s IM run) is already going before Siege (and therefore before Avengers v4); the arcs World’s Most Wanted and Stark Disassembled align with Siege, sort of, very badly. Steve is actually in Secret Avengers v1 rather than on the main Avengers team at the beginning of Avengers v4; he doesn’t head his own Cap book (Cap v6) until about halfway through Avengers, when Fear Itself happens and Bucky kicks the bucket (don’t worry, he’s fine) and Steve gets the shield again and rejoins the main team. Fraction’s run also renumbers at #500 because why the hell not. New Avengers v2 is also running now, starting I think at the same time as the others, but is not Steve & Tony-centric. Also AvX happens.
And then it’s Marvel Now and we have Avengers v5/New Avengers v3/Cap v7/IM v5 kicking off together in 2012-2013. This is Hickman’s Avengers, Remender’s Cap, and Gillen’s IM. Important events are Infinity and Axis. After Axis, Steve loses the serum and Tony goes evil and we get Superior Iron Man running in parallel with the ends of Avengers and Cap. And then the multiverse dies and we get Secret Wars and its associated bunch of miniseries.
After Secret Wars, in 2015, it’s All-New All-Different Marvel. (Avengers v6 is a preview issue for all the Avengers titles.) We get All-New All Different Avengers, Bendis’ IM (Invincible v2 & International), and Spencer’s SamCap. At this time, Steve is deserumed and running Uncanny Avengers; I forget the volume number. He was running Uncanny before the end of the world too. SamCap started before SteveCap did, and that one v8 issue is actually Spencer’s final issue that kept the numbering from SamCap. Important events include Standoff, which is when Steve gets reserumed (SteveCap starts after this) and becomes secretly Hydra. At the end of all this we get Civil War II.
Then it’s… I think it’s called Marvel Now 2.0? Avengers v7 starts at about the same time Bendis’ Invincible renumbers again (and is about Riri) so we’re at v3 by my count, and Infamous Iron Man (about Doom) starts. The two Cap books are still running on the same numbers. Then Secret Empire happens.
Then it’s Marvel Legacy, which means that literally everything renumbers to its vol 1 numbers because Marvel wants to make me cry, but Avengers and Invincible IM keep going with the same creative teams. Spencer’s Cap run ends basically when Secret Empire ends, and Bendis stops writing for Marvel with IM #600. Waid picks up Cap for two arcs, one of which is amazing and one of which is extremely confusing.
And now I think we’re at A Fresh Start and Avengers v8/Cap v9/Tony Stark: Iron Man have started. The current major event is Infinity Wars. There are Infinity Gems involved, yes.
You know, I thought this was going to be quicker to type.
Also I forgot to tell everyone to read Iron Age, in which Tony time-travels, cries in the rain, and hits on himself.

The excitement is high for MCU series The Falcon And The Winter Soldier, which is scheduled to hit Disney+ on March 19, 2021. If the trailer is anything to go by, there will be plenty of action. For those Marvel fans who have felt a bit disappointed by the slow burn and sitcom setting of Wandavision can now look forward to the usual CGI action fest.
RELATED: The Falcon And The Winter Soldier: 10 Hilarious Memes About The Main Characters
The series will see Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes teaming up to fight the Flag-Smashers. Since Sam Wilson has mostly been a supporting character in the MCU, little details about him might still be unknown to a good number of fans. Though not heavily focused on, his suit (popularly known as the EXO-7) is actually as incredible as that of Marvel's top heroes.
10 How Does The Suit Help Sam Fly?
Tumblr media
The EXO-7 give Sam the ability to fly, thanks to the presence of mechanical wings and three tiny jet engines located in the suit's backpack. The engines are said to provide a thrust force of 1000 lbs.
The suit has hand grips to enable him to control the wings. By folding and flapping the wings, Sam is able to change direction, ascend, and descend as he pleases. In the unlikely event that the jet engines malfunction, there is an in-built parachute that unfolds to prevent the Avengers member from falling to the ground.
9 Who Else Has Won The Suit?
Tumblr media
Only two EXO-7 flight suits were ever created by the US military. The two suits were given to Sam Wilson and his fellow 58th squadron rescue member Riley. The purpose of the suits was to make soldiers fly to areas where helicopters couldn't go, due to constant targeting by RPGs.
Riley's suit was destroyed when he was shot down by a missile. The remaining suit was kept at Fort Meade by the US military until Sam Wilson stole it back.
8 What Weapons Does The Suit Have?
Tumblr media
The EXO-7 is equipped with twin Steyr SPP collapsible machine gun pistols that act as Sam's main weapons. He has used the guns against Ant-Man, HYDRA agents, Outriders, and Crossbones' mercenaries.
RELATED: The Falcon And The Winter Soldier: 10 Things We Already Know About The Disney+ Series
Whenever Sam reaches for his holster, the guns pop up and are extended into his arms. His left gauntlet also has an emission gun that he can control by simply clenching his fits. On the right gauntlet, there is a rocket launcher that he can also control by clenching his fists. On the upper side of the jetpack, there are miniature missiles that are controlled by the Redwing.
7 How Was The Suit Upgraded?
Tumblr media
Before the events of Captain America: Civil War, the EXO-7 received a major upgrade at the New Avengers Facility. Even though the functionality remained the same, the weapons, communications systems, and armor platings were upgraded.  A red stripe was also added to the new suit as well. Other than that, it has remained fairly the same.
Sam then showed up later at the New Avengers Facility to be a part of Captain America's team. No further upgrades to the suit have been made ever since.
6 Can The Combat Goggles Compare To Tony Stark's?
Tumblr media
Sam's goggles might not be as cool or stylish as the ones Tony Stark gave Peter Parker but there are equally as useful. One of the features on the goggles is a Heads-Up Display (HUD) that enables Sam to see minute details.
There is also a tracking sensor system that detects incoming bodies and warns the user. The goggles helped Sam track Ant-Man during the civil war. Ant-Man only managed to evade by changing his size. The goggles also have the ability to communicate with the Redwing while analyzing data that is crucial for combat.
5 What Is The Redwing?
Tumblr media
The Redwing is a drone that's stored at the back of the EXO-7. It was created by Stark Industries, hence why it's also known as the "Stark Drone MK82 922 V 80Z V2 Prototype Unit V6." While in flight, it's able to split into three parts for maximum effectiveness, as seen during the Battle Of Wakanda.

The drone can be operated remotely using a touch screen on Sam's hand. It's able to scout the ground and air without being detected, thus providing him with crucial information. While in Eastern Europe, Sam uses the Redwing to find the weakness of an Ultron lookalike. During the Lagos mission, the Redwing also informs Sam that mercenaries are hiding in a garbage truck.
4 How Strong Is The Suit?
Tumblr media
Sam Wilson has been seen using the EXO-7 wings to knock opponents and throw them several feet away. This is proof of its power.  The wings were also sharp enough to pierce the Chitauri Gorillas - despite the fact that the body of a Chitauri Gorilla is fitted with armor plating and cybernetic implants.
The EXO-7's wings are made from carbon fiber material that enables them to withstand gunfire from small arms. Other parts of Sam's suit are not that strong. Luckily, the wings can be programmed using the touchpad to form a giant protective shield around him.
3 What Powers The Suit?
Tumblr media
One might wonder how the suit keeps functioning at full capacity. Fans have seen Tony Stark's suit run out of power on several occasions because it relies on battery cells that need to be charged.
Well, Sam Wilson's suit is fitted with mini solar panels that provide much-needed electrical current. Since he stays airborne most of the time, he is unlikely to ever run out of power. That's unless he uses the suit for too long at night. Luckily, he hasn't been forced to do that just yet. Things might change in the future.
2 Is The Suit The Same In The Comics?
Tumblr media
Not really! The suit's appearance has changed several times in the comics. Black Panther is the man responsible for upgrading Sam Wilson's wings in the comics.

Initially, the wings are made out of titanium ribbing. They can also detach and reattach themselves to his outfit. However, when this suit gets destroyed, Black Panther makes him a new one out of vibranium. The new costume also has a much larger wingspan of 50 feet, which makes them more effective for flight.
1 What Top Speed Can The Wings And Jet Engines Propel Him To?
Tumblr media
The peregrine falcon is the fastest animal in the world. It has a top speed of 185 mph. The fact that Sam Wilson is named after it says a lot about his flight speed.
Sam's speed is never stated in the MCU but it can be assumed that he is as fast as Iron Man and War Machine, since he manages to keep up with them during a chase. The suit that Tony Stark builds in Iron Man 3 can fly at five times the speed of sound. If Sam can keep up with such speeds, then he is quite fast. He also proves to be fast enough to dodge Vision's death ray.

Avengers #5.1
I had to wait two weeks for this one, because my comic guy was a bozo and never realized that this was on my queue.  So he sold out of it and had to re-order it for me.
Anyway, this issue was great.  I knew somehow the Avenger X thing was gonna apply to the main Avengers title, but I’m glad that it didn’t connect in the way that I was imagining.  This nostalgic back-story is very much it’s own thing, which I think is great.  This is definitely the end of that too, but who knows.  There may be a possibility for Waid to do something like this again, just from another Classic Era of the Avengers.  That would be cool.
[SPOILERS]
So, remember how that Cressida chick turned on the Kooky Quartet in the last issue and seemed to suck all of their power dry?  They were all left for dead, looking like decrepit old raisins.  Leaving me to wonder, ‘How the Hell did they possibly get out of this?’
[Then I had to wait an extra 2 weeks, thanks to my comic guy.]
Well, I was excited to see the triumphant return of the Original Team.
Cressida yells at the public who stare at the fallen Avengers, awestruck.  Then, Iron Man, Thor, Giant man  and the Wasp show up.  I was very happy to see young Tony in action.  Cressida seemed to easily handle Wasp, but not Giant man.  He knocked her down so hard.  But then she channeled Quicksilver’s power and ran circles around him.  Even Thor couldn’t stop her, but her magic was ineffective against him.
[I would’ve liked to have seen him take a crack at her with his hammer, butt hat didn’t happen.]
“Iron Man! Smite her!”
He couldn’t catch her though due to having Cap’s Acrobatics at her disposal.  [What a crock.]  She ended up using Wanda’s hex energy to get their feet stuck in solid pavement.
“Next time, I won’t let you off this easily!”  She flies away.
Then we see 2 days later that the Original Avengers held a funeral service for the New Avengers.  =/.
[At first I thought.  What the Hell? They died!?  So what.. they got resurrected and then went on adventuring together??  But just wait.]
During the service, The Wasp spots Cressida waiting in the shadows of a near-by tall tree.
Suddenly an arrow flies at her, and catches her in a net.
On the next page, we see Hawkeye, Captain America, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch all perfectly fine and probably in better condition actually.
“Ready for Round Two, Avengers?” Cap asks.  [But how???]
It turns out that Giant Man scienced the Hell out of them, rejuvenating them with “our dying sparks of Energy.”  He also made them immune to her power.  Completely unexplained, but it doesn’t matter.
Thor asks Cap to ask them to help, which would’ve been epic, but then it would’ve taken away from continuity too.
Cap insists that they stay with the plan.  The Original Avengers are in charge of keeping the public safe, while the New Avengers will handle Cressida.  Or should I say, “Avenger X.”
The battle is long and good.  She seems to be channeling her power from Jarvis this time around, which really upsets them.  Hawkeye most of all.
I’m cutting to the chase when I tell you that it comes down to Hawkeye and a well placed gas-arrow to stop her.  From there, Wanda tries a new magic hex power that she learned from Cressida actually.  She actually amplifies Quicksilver’s speed to epic proportions and causes him to hurricane her out of there.  Effectively ejecting her out of the building.
At this point she lands in a far away forest, coincidentally where 3 of the Frightful Four are hanging out.  [No Medusa this time around, which is fine.]
I enjoyed seeing Sandman, Chemistry and whoever take out their aggression on her.  It would’ve been out of character for the Avengers to kill her.  But not these guys.
Sandman ends up burying Avenger X, alive who cries out for mercy.  Chemistro decides to create a headstone out of a nearby flat boulder for her.  Etching in stone the words, “Here lies Avenger X Bravest of us all”
In a dopey move, the actual New Avengers go looking for her and can’t find her.  They completely miss the headstone even though its right behind them.
Then, continuity wise, the next day the 4 meet and discuss that Jarvis is alive and well.  Further more, Wanda figures that they should look for the Hulk, to ask him to rejoin the team.
Captain America likes the idea.  “Of course, we’ve got no leads, no resources and no way of achieving the impossible.  You know what that sounds like to me?  That sounds like a job for the Avengers!”
-To be Continued in Avengers #17 vol.1-
!!!!  We’re even given a retro issue for continuity!!!  Aggghh! Waid.  What are you doing!!??
This is grounds for opening up Pandora’s Box!  I shouldn’t collect from that far back.  I don’t have the shelf space!  But oh man.  That’s great.
I loved this.
This was a great idea, and while it’s supposed to serve as the.. retro side-story, to give this Cressida OC something of a rooted origin story, I feel like Waid created a whole separate entity here.  He really has the ability to keep this type of thing going if he wanted to.
But the point of all this was to learn about Avenger X.  Therefore it’ll hold weight and actually mean something by the time Avengers #7 drops.
Now, I will bring up the fact that, I missed this issue when it came out, but I DID read Avengers #6 the very next week, when it came out.  And there was only 1 short moment, where not having read this, affected the ending of that issue.  But it was barely anything at all.
Anyway.  That’s it for this wonderful mini-series.  But Avenger X’s story is apparently far from over.  And the next issue of Avengers was the end of his first Kang Arc.
I liked it but..  you’ll see.
Avengers v6 #6 is next!

Hello! Thank you for all your comics answers, I hope you aren't too tired of them. Do you have a site or resource you recommend to determine what chronological order Marvel comics go in? I've found sites that list things for certain runs or characters, like, a post about what issues and volumes constitute Hickmanvengers or that kind of thing. But how would I figure out when / where in Avengers, Iron Man, and Captain America Continuity the One Night in Madripoor takes place? Or similar?
There are various reading order sites – like here, here, and here – if you want to know what order to read in within a single title. I don’t use them much; the one I do use is Crushing Krisis which will tell you which issues have or haven’t been collected in trade paperbacks. Step one of your quest here is probably to use those and similar sites to determine what the issue numbers of the arc you’re looking for is.
One Night in Madripoor, for example, is Captain America & Iron Man #633-635. If you poke around those sites above, you’ll see that it came out in 2012; Brubaker’s Cap vol 5 hit #50 and renumbered back to its vol 1 numbering at #600 for about 20 issues before renumbering again back to #1 (so I guess that would make that vol 6?) while, IIRC, the original post-600 numbering kept going and the original book switched to a team-up book (”Captain America & x”) which is where the Cap & IM issues come from. I think? It’s a confusing time, and also I stopped reading Brubaker before #600 so I am a little fuzzy on that era of Cap.
But if you want to know what else was going on in other books at the time, the Marvel wiki will actually answer that for you. If you go to, say, the wiki page about Captain America & Iron Man #633, you can see in the info box on the right that it was released June 27, 2012. Clicking on that will get you a page of all the Marvel comics that were released on that day, and from there you can navigate to all Marvel comics released in June 2012. Poking around those listings, it looks like AvX was happening, so presumably the main Avengers were involved in that; the issue of Iron Man that month is one that I happen to know is close to the end of Fraction’s run, so Tony is… fighting the Mandarin, I think; and there’s a Cap v6 issue I haven’t read where it looks like Steve is fighting Scourge.
(The thing about comics is that you will often run into situations where the timelines won’t strictly match up – like, how are they doing all these things AND fighting the X-Men? How is Tony on the Avengers and going to Madripoor with Steve while being abducted by the Mandarin in his own book for like ten issues? Doesn’t anyone MISS HIM? And there is no good answer, so really, y’know, don’t worry about it. If I am writing fic – especially fic with older canon – I will often line up events from different books that are several months apart and no one has complained yet. You can usually get away with it unless it involves, say, one of the characters being dead.)
A lot of the earlier issues on the Marvel Wiki have information taken from this great series of books called The Official Index to the Marvel Universe which includes, for every issue, a list of characters in that issue and their previous and next appearances. For example, if you look at the wiki page for Avengers vol 1 #216 those little triangles on either side of the characters’ names will take you to the page about the issue that is either the last or next time you see them in canon, and from there you can piece together what they’re up to. The indices only go up to 2010 so it’s not helpful for more recent canon, but it’s very useful if you’re reading older stuff.
I feel like somewhere I have seen a site with an actual overlapping timeline graphic for 616, but it’s not coming to mind. If anyone else has any resources, feel free to share!
