Physical/Digital Doodle Cut-Ups

Before taking an unplanned hiatus from working on visual art for the past couple of years, I had decided that "Art for the Sake of Art" was no longer useful or beneficial but rather it was obstructing and maybe eroding my progress. I had bad habits. I overdid things without discipline or direction. It was too loose, it was a mess.

And instead I had a strict structure and process, organized ritual and didn't commit to anything that was without intention or without an idea thatbworth expressing.

But life's other demands got in the way and I got out of rhythm, and well I'm trying to end the hiatus and work my way back in. But I'm now finding that it's taking some work to get back into doing it the way I have been doing just out of a lack of working those muscles and art for the sake of art is the only way to get the gears grinding again and so these and others I'll be posting are just that - a mixture of digital and physical doodles, mixed with other unfinished projects.

We are pleased to welcome all fellow sonic researchers into our musical process, a process whereby we craft experimental pop songs out of improvised music and cut-up lyrics. When recording vocals, we typically rely on transcripts of our lyrical cutups, viewable either on mobile phones or a computer. Rare is the occasion when we read directly off the journal which contains our lyrics.

On October 2, 2022, however, we were faced by a broken laptop monitor. This fragmentation possessed an aesthetic beauty all its own and here it is for your viewing pleasure.

This session was slated to continue the work begun on August 21, 2022. This was—and, at the time of this writing, is still—our most recent recording session, and we were eager to build upon it by adding vocals to the piece.

As the music played, S.A. Morin chose four stanzas which established the lyrics that would fit atop the piece we had improvised six weeks prior. His selections were assemblages of words crafted by W. Ruiz on 2022.08.03, 2022.08.22, and 2022.09.30. An order was established and then the lyrics were pasted directly onto our journal.

The lyrics were then sung straight off the notebook. This approach gave the session a nostalgic air, closer in spirit to our earliest sessions in 2018 at the O'Higgins Laboratory of Recorded Sound. Impassioned vocal takes ensued as we began to build a pop song atop our musical improvisation. The performances were captured on video and photographed, mainly on a smartphone but also on a DSLR-styled superzoom camera.

Corduroy 73 remained dormant until March 12, 2023. It was on this date when Corduroy Institute convened to craft a mix from the original August improvisations and October vocals.

After months of research and development and market testing and perfecting the first item I feel confident selling online, I have realized... that it is an incredibly niche item that only a specific subset of absolute nerds would want to buy, and I will have to do a ton of explaining the basic idea over and over again before people generally get what it is I'm even selling. #this is like the time I spraypainted a bunch of screw heads gold #because I was putting up gold spraypainted shelf brackets and wanted these black screws to not stand out #and to make it easier I took a piece of thin cardboard and cut a series of Xes in it #then pushed the screws in a little bit and positioned it over the gap between boards on the back deck #and used my hammer to just plonk those screws into place so I could spraypaint them! #i felt so clever I posted a video of it #(gold spraypaint makes me feel giddy and childlike) #and everyone was like #“GIRL NO YOU CAN'T DO THAT DON'T TRY TO *HAMMER* YOUR *SCREWS* INTO A DECK!” #it took like. so much work to try to explain to people why this was a problem I wanted to solve #much less the mechanism by which i solved it #my brain is just. webcomic/indie comic from the 2010s. basically a sci-fi short story about a young girl (with red hair?) who was being raised by scientists as part of an experiment. she receives a haircut/has her head shaved, in preparation for her annual brain scan/testing. it is revealed that while her body is human, her "brain" is artificial, made of computer implants throughout her skull and spine. at some point her biological mother (also a scientist on the same campus?) encounters her and is repulsed, viewing her as a machine who has murdered her daughter.

it was very poignant and it bruised my heart and i can NOT find it anywhere

listen I expected literally Nothing from the D&D movie okay, like I can't make it clear enough that I expected the most soulless money grab with a good cgi budget imaginable, I went in having already gone through every stage of grief and landed on acceptance and LISTEN

I fucking CRIED during this dumb RPG movie. it wasn't just "not terrible" it was objectively good with a clever plot and compelling characters and sincere emotional beats. this movie loves D&D so fucking much and it NAILS the "a bunch of goobers try to be cool and accidentally discover The Power Of Friendship And Also Great Violence" classic D&D party vibe. their barbarian's last name is fucking Kilgore and my entire family cried in the theater.

I hope they make twelve of these motherfuckers.
