It Feels Like This - Chapter 17
The next couple weeks had a similar structure: breakfast, training, lunch, training, research, dinner, cuddling (which usually became snogging), then sleep. Harry hadn't given up on trying to win duels against Hermione, and even she had to admit he was improving and she had to be quicker on her feet to dodge him. They'd mastered nonverbal Protego and Reducto, which had been a lot of fun, and Hermione had used Incarcerous on Harry so many times she'd lost count. He'd kept true to his word about not subjecting her to it, however, though she knew she'd have to eventually, because it might be a real occurrence and she didn't want to lose herself if she ever were in that position. They'd switched locations again, but hadn't made any progress on the Snitch, which was frustrating, too.
"Hermione, I've been thinking," Harry started one night, making sure Hermione was awake. They'd gone to bed a little early from the mental and physical exhaustion of the past few days finally catching up with them.
"Hmm," she just hummed in response. Under the blankets with Harry was almost too warm, but with as far north they'd gone, the snow was coming relentlessly now, and they could only do so much to keep it out of the tent, at least with their skill level. She'd much prefer this over freezing.
"I want to go to Godric's Hollow." Hermione tensed in his arms. "I just… it's where I was born, it's where my parents died…"
She sat up a little, leaning on her elbow. "That's exactly where he'll expect you to go, because it means something to you."
"Yeah, but it means something to him, too, Hermione. He almost died there. Don't you think that would be exactly the type of place he'd be likely to hide a horcrux?"
"It's… it's dangerous, Harry," she sighed. "But I have to admit, recently I've been thinking we'll have to go eventually."

I really enjoyed that u made a drarry starter kit/guide to reading that genre. Can u by chance make one for dramione (pls plug in when i should maybe read ur works, cuz all i see is so much praise for it! and im so excited)
happy new year !
Happy new year anon, and I'm more than happy to put this together! A quick disclaimer: I won't be recommending any dark fics. I’m not much of a dark fic reader myself and unless that’s something a reader specifically asks for, it’s not what I’d recommend starting with for dramione, especially if you’re new to the pairing. As always, read/write what you want, this is a purely subjective list. It’s also doomed to be incomplete/lacking. This ship is 20-plus years old at this point, there are more than 20,000 fics on Ao3 alone, which doesn’t account for the FFN-only fics as well as those lost to FFN purges and deleted LJ communities over the years (pours one out for Hawthorn and Vine). Don’t be afraid to fall down an older fic rabbit hole, there’s loads out there if you don’t mind looking.
Let’s start with fics that focus on Draco putting in the work to earn his redemption.
The Disappearances of Draco Malfoy is a Deathly Hallows rewrite and an excellent way to ease into this ship.
Once you've read that, come on over to the post-war side of things where we completely disregard the epilogue:
Remain Nameless
Wait and Hope followed immediately by Beginning and End
Apple Pies and Other Amends
The Eagle's Nest
Graveyard Valentine
Avalanche
Somewhere Down the Line
Not Fond of Asking
commit this to memory
Waifs and Strays
Tin Angel
Okay, now that you’re convinced Draco has the potential to even approach Hermione and that they could eventually be a couple, here are some more plot-driven fics.
Love and Other Historical Accidents
Heavy Lies the Crown
Distance
Enekpe’s Clock
Between Certifiable and Bliss
Carpathian
Looking Glass
Five Days
Okay, now you’re fully sold on these two and want to run the gamut of tropes, ratings, and story length:
Out of Order
Mutually Beneficial
Movements, Contrived and Improvised
He Becomes
Les Pelerins
The Alkahest
In These Silent Days
What You Think is Right
Boardwalk
Well Said, Hermione
Strange Birds
Mugglefied
The Seduction
Sex Ed
Breath Mints / Battle Scars
Ardent Bonds
Ordinary People
Ways and Means
Draco Malfoy’s Halfway House for Wayward Hens
Out of Mind
Celestial Navigation
I also want to acknowledge my FFN roots, since the first ever dramione fic I read was called their room. Some more FFN fics:
Macbeth
Fallen
The Mountain and the Sea
Bus Stop
Eight and Eighth
One Day in Autumn
Okay, that's probably more than enough to get people started 😅. Happy reading anon!

I think it's fine not to like HP. I'm sure some other people have been dicks about that, but I've always thought that. What I find irritating is when people now try to use the fact that JKR is a terrible person and there have been reckonings with the less-than-savory aspects of the books, to act like the books were never all that important or influential. Like the weird rewriting-of-history that has been people claiming it was only the movies that made them popular, which I have to feel like you can only believe if you just weren't alive or weren't paying attention in the late 90s when the books first took off globally. The fourth book release alone was a huge, global, news-headline-grabbing event and that was over a year before the first movie came out, and there were NO kids' books that level of popular at that time like that. I also wish there was an awareness of how much your age and generation have some influence on how you experienced those books (though they obviously don't completely, there are exceptions in every generation) in the opposite direction, too: like, as someone who was in elementary school when the books first came out in the 90s, was the same age as Harry and co. when the first movie came out, etc. I just have to laugh when I see some DNI on here that suggests that ANYONE who holds ANY fondness for the HP books is problematic and Tainted Forever from someone who is like 20 years old. You just wanna say, nah, I feel like the fact that you were 4 years old when Deathly Hallows was released prooooobably has more to do with the fact that you don't care for HP than that you are so much more especially virtuous than millennials, who were somehow supposed to know that JKR would turn into a transphobe over a decade before her first "middle-aged moment" on Twitter.

A new fic: White Linen Lies
I'm so excited to share my newest WIP, White Linen Lies!
WLL is a Deathly Hallows rewrite in which Draco Malfoy finds himself nearly lifeless in the hands of the Golden Girl.
In a turn of events where the Resurrection Stone is stolen and Draco is gravely injured in the Skirmish at the Room of Requirement, Hermione is left with no choice but to save his life as the rest of The Order of the Phoenix and Dumbledore’s Army are forced to flee, leaving Wizarding Britain with an impending war and an unaccounted for Death Eater.

New chapters will be posted on AO3 every Wednesday and Sunday afternoon on maesfictional. Please, join in on the conversation and come say hi! 💚

Hello! First of all, I LOVE your blog! ❤️ I hope everyone is well. Do you know any fics with more "adult themes"? Which mean, more serious stuff, war, etc. I love Manacled, Secrets & Masks and Perfectly in Pieces. I also love Hunted and LITOTZA. Maybe fics where Draco is on the other side of war and then changes? Or was faking all this time? Thanks so much!
Shadows of Ourselves By: InkFairy - T, 32 chapters - Draco Malfoy has played both sides of the war for years, but when Voldemort gives him an ultimatum—bring him Hermione Granger or die—she surprisingly agrees to be handed over to the Dark Lord. Together, they take pureblood society by storm as Master and Madam Malfoy, all while trying to help the Order find and destroy the last Horcruxes and defeat Voldemort forever.
Draco Takes a Mark - diamonddaydream - T, 53 chapters, Words: 184,204 - "The fact that Hermione Granger and Draco Malfoy were mad for each other was the worst kept secret at Hogwarts.“ Retelling of The Half-blood Prince as a Dramione story. Crookshanks brings Draco to Hermione after she’s brought back cursed from the Department of Mysteries. Knowing the relationship they’ve carried on in secret since the Yule Ball is about to be tested, she inscribes an ancient love charm onto his left arm with surprising consequences which may affect the course of the coming war. Continues the story “Dancing with Draco ” or reads fine on its own. Complete, HEA
Entanglement By: blankfish - M, WIP - “Your loyalties begin and end with me now, Granger, or have you forgotten?” he spat bitterly. At the request of the Order, Hermione Granger marries Draco Malfoy, a man she’d only ever known as her enemy. This decision leads her on a winding path of tumultuous consequences that even she could not have predicted. Dramione War AU.
The Gift of Joy by BiscuitsForPotter - E, 22 chapters, Words: 147,249 - After the murder of Albus Dumbledore, Draco never makes it out of Hogwarts. Instead, he is captured, interrogated, and placed in the temporary care of someone who can help him lie low until a more permanent solution can be found. His caretaker? None other than one Hermione Granger. Stripped of his status, his wand, and his dignity, can Draco Malfoy find solace in the company of the muggleborn he once tormented?
Divine Artifice By: jessiy - M, 25 chapters, Words: 162,391 - The story of how Draco Malfoy found redemption, his heart, and reclaimed his family’s honor. All thanks to a mislabeled bottle of Experimental Amortentia. Hermione/Draco
The Disappearances of Draco Malfoy - speechwriter - M, 33 chapters, Words: 296,116 - The night that Harry and Dumbledore return from the cave, the Death Eaters are delayed from reaching the top of the Astronomy Tower for one more minute. Draco Malfoy lowers his wand. A Deathly Hallows rewrite in which Draco accepts Dumbledore’s offer to fake his death and go into hiding with the Order of the Phoenix.
Turncoat By: elizaye - M, 101 chapters - Switching sides. “I have only one condition, and I trust it won’t be hard for you to meet. I want Granger.”
We Learned the Sea By: floorcoaster - T, 37 chapters - Draco Malfoy turns himself in after a very successful career as a Death Eater, then enlists Harry and Hermione to help him in a scheme to bring down the Dark Lord. DHr. A story of forgiveness.
Static By: galfoy - M, 21 chapters - The Order rescued Draco and Lucius Malfoy after Lord Voldemort turned on them. All the safe houses are full, and Hermione Granger is the only one who can take them in. Will she agree after having suffered a drastic nervous breakdown?
Stolen By: Elsie girl - T, 45 chapters - She pretends to love him for the Order. He pretends to love her for the Dark Lord. Have they deceived everyone, or only themselves? “Love unlocks doors and opens windows that weren’t even there before.” Mignon McLaughlin. Thank you so much for the support. Please read and review. Complete Dramione.
Crimson with a Silver Lining by Lady Cailan - M, 78 Chapters - It is six years since the fall of the Ministry to Voldemort. Those other than purebloods are deemed less than human. When Ginny’s daughter ends up in grave danger, Hermione sells herself to the Death Eaters to save her life. Draco/Hermione. Not fluffy
Family Ties by l.h. Zein - T, 33 chapters, Words: 163,935 - They would underestimate him. The strongest person he’d ever known had been underestimated, and she was his mother in all but blood. He molded himself, played the part he’d been cast to play, while he waited for his chance. Then Sirius Black had escaped. Twisted canon. AU picking up at the start of DH.

If the saga were rewritten again only this time from the perspective of another character in each book who would the characters be?
My choices:
Philosopher's Stone: Hermione and Ron
Chamber of Secrets: Ginny
Prisoner of Azkaban: Lupin or Sirius
Goblet of Fire: Cedric, Barto Crouch Junior or Ron (when he was angry with Harry)
Order of the Phoenix: Neville, Luna and Dumbledore
Half-Blood Prince: Snape and Draco
Deathly Hallows: Snape, Voldemort and Neville
Hmm, interesting idea. Honestly, I never really considered rewriting it because if I wrote it, it won't be Harry Potter. But I really love multiple POVs, and it's a fun thought.
The main concern would be how to not reveal the mystery too quickly in some of them. And I think sticking to a limited number of POVs and being very careful with them is the way to go here.
For Philosopher’s Stone, Ron and Hermione are solid choices. I agree with you there. Like, I imagine a chapter from Hermione's POV that she's crying in the bathroom and it ends with a cliffhanger of a troll barging in, then the next chapter is either Harry or Ron. I think it could be fun.
For Chamber of Secrets, Ginny is the obvious choice. The main risk is that if Ginny is a POV, it'll be really hard to keep the readers guessing about who the heir of Slytherin is. Even if the readers know she has the diary early on, it's enough to undercut the mystery. Maybe she could have a few chapters in the end to cover her side of what happened. I imagine towards the end, after Hermione gets petrefied, we start getting Ginny's POV that goes back in time a bit, shows her losing time, and writing to Tom. The reader would feel the dread build up slowly and then, bam, she's writing her own death message on the wall while crying, and then we cut to Harry's POV. I think maybe for the second POV, we could get away with a Tom POV? But like, not one that makes it obvious he's writing to Ginny. Like, the POV would cover Tom's diary experiences before coming into Ginny's hands in a way that'll leave the reader uncertain who he is and how he connects to everything. Bonus points if the reader gets attached to Tom and then recognizes him when Harry gets his hands on the diary. The reader would then be shocked and heartbroken when Tom is revealed to be Voldemort.
For Prisoner of Azkaban, I think Lupin would be a fun one. More stories of the marauders, his guilt and wondering if he should tell Dumbledore Sirius is an animagus or not. Like Ginny, Sirius reveals the mystery too fast if he's a POV. I would actually want to hear from Hermione in this book. The time turner is a mystery, but it's not the main one, and I feel it can be used for fun shenanigans from her POV. Also, we could discover Lupin is a werewolf throughout the book with her.
For Goblet of Fire, so with Barty Crouch Jr we have the same problem as with Ginny and Sirius. The readers get answers too fast. So, I feel like Ron and Cedric are really solid options for this book, I agree with you there. And maybe once Barty is revealed we can have like 1 chapter from his POV to sum the situation up instead of listening to the varitesorum interrogation, or during the interrogation we have this chapter and get his thoughts too. I just don't think his is a POV that'll work if we want to keep the reveal at the end. But I love Barty, so I can give him one chapter at the end.
For Order of the Phoenix, I want Sirius' POV a lot. This is the book that should make the reader connect with him the most so his death hurts the most. So, I want his POV, well see a bit from the Order without revealing all of Dumbledore's cards. The second POV, I think either Neville or Luna are a good choice, but I'm leaning towards Luna here and Neville in DH.
For Half-Blood Prince, Snape is a very fun POV here, and so is Draco. Draco’s POV in this book would be fascinating. The thing is, both of them would reveal everything too fast. So, I'm thinking some chapters from Snape's POV that are carefully selected to not reveal too much, but show a little of what's going on with the Death Eaters and Draco's book long breakdown, without revealing he's on Dumbledore's side. It's the book named after him, so I feel he should get a POV there. The second extra POV, I think, could be someone like Pansy or Blaise Zabini, maybe? Like, a Slytherin student we don't really know that'll shed light on what's going down in their house in the wake of Voldemort’s return. But they'll still not really know what's up beyound, Draco has a mission, and we're growing a little concerned.
For Deathly Hollows, I definitely agree on Neville being a POV. It'll be great to see what's going on with the DA at the school through his eyes. As for Voldemort and Snape; Snape, I feel, would be too revealing, and Voldemort would be a fascinating POV, but I think it wouldn't really fit what the book is going for. I think Draco could be a better POV here to show the Death Eater side of things, without undercutting any tension. He'd just up the tension, becouse he'd have a shitty time. Also, Draco POV adds another mystery to the book: "where is the Dark Lord disappearing to?" It'll kind of mirror Harry wondering the same thing about Dumbledore in OotP and HBP and could be really interesting.

Beyond the Veil (masterpost)
Co-written with @thedreamermusing
Sirius Black/Severus Snape. 97k.
A canon-divergent rewrite of Half Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows that follows the relationship between Sirius Black and Severus Snape. Think of it as mine and Dreamer's character study with romance.
Our list of chapters (and tiny previews where you can see we have experimented with multiple POVs) under the cut! Also a Snape and Lily prequel written by @thedreamermusing here: January 30th, 1975 (Happy Birthday Lily)
Tumblr media
Chapter 1 - Prologue
Time was a standstill in these long hallways and empty rooms, full of memories that ticked under his skin like a pulse under a livid bruise.
Chapter 2 - changing perceptions
He was tempted to laugh, laugh like a maniac, at the absurdity, the injustice, out of grief--let out all his curled up emotions in a big hearty laugh. But then again, that hadn't worked out so well for him 15 years ago.
Chapter 3 - 12 Grimmauld Place meets Spinner's End
What Pettigrew lacked in skill; he made up for in malice.  This seemingly pusillanimous creature hid within him a rusty sword whose efficiency lay not in the sharpness of the blade, but in the unnoticed poison of the rust.
Chapter 4- Enemy of my Enemy
"I brought him here because I finally see the advantages of being brawny rather than brainy," Snape smirked.
Chapter 5 - The Prince and Padfoot
"You disgust me.” rang over and over in his head like a church bell, a judgement in a confessional, a whisper that haunted his ears when he dreamed and lay awake, sometimes unable to tell the difference.
Chapter 6 - Monsters and Old School Friends
His wildness hung over him like an aura of a predator. Long-limbed, lax, but there was danger bubbling within him, an inexplicable ferocity that filled the air around him. How could anyone else not see that monster?
Chapter 7 - Circular Path
When Severus saw it for the first time, he was amazed. It was an answer to a question he had all his life, a representation of what could be built if he just reached out for the future and grabbed it with greedy hands. Now, as Narcissa opened the door with a stone face belied by the terror in her eyes, he was able to see the Manor for what it really was--a mouldering dump of pureblood affectations that concealed its decay as well as Grimmauld Place accentuated it.
Chapter 8 - Tale of Two Black Stars
Severus had known all along how to see who held the room. It was ingrained in him since he was a child. In Spinner's End, it was his father. A looming presence of overbearing violence that his mother, his magical mother, cowered against. He noticed it again in the playground - where Lily flew in air, in a burst of extraordinarily controlled magic.
Chapter 9 - The Wounds of Men
He did not know where their sudden leap of faith for the ferret came from ( “C’mon mate, I know Malfoy is a git but Death Eater is serious business!” ), but it made him feel stupid and ridiculous--it was almost as if he was back at Aunt Petunia’s, listening to her sweet talk the neighbours about Harry’s delinquency. ( “He told you he sleeps under a cupboard? A nasty, nasty lie! But the poor dear has got no one else; his parents didn’t leave us any money as well. It’s been such a strain on our finances…”
Chapter 10 - By The Light of The Full Moon
The first week at Azkaban was truly horrendous. Peter valued his mind - it was his best weapon and it helped him fade into the background. Losing the ability to think clearly, unable to tell dreams and memories apart; it was a sensation that terrified him. It felt like getting sucked into the quicksand of his resentment and anger and guilt that he kept at bay. He didn’t want to feel it. What use were those emotions, if they failed to help him survive?
Tumblr media
Chapter 11 - Face Death in Hope
Death, Pain - all unavoidable things. Things he had to play with - in hope that one day, he would be able to expiate what he was carrying.  He would not live to see it, he was sure. But he could hope. The only relief he had is that he would not die by his - Gellert’s- hand. “I am the only one who should be allowed to kill you,” he had said, a declaration, a threat - he wasn’t sure. “It is me that keeps you alive.”
Chapter 12 - Who Are You?
He was a son of the House of Malfoy, a noble house, one of the sacred 28, whose line went back generations. Their legacy was set in stone, the purity of their blood unquestioned. It infuriated him that nobody recognised that--that Potter, with his filthy mixed blood and mudblood mother--didn’t recognise that. And now, it had become so much worse. His father was a laughingstock. His mother looked pale and frightened all the time. It was up to him to bring things back to normal.
Chapter 13 - The Last Enemy (Part 1)
There were so many things that he thought were forgotten, so many memories whose life and colour had been drained away by grief and Azkaban. But standing here in the square, it was clear that they had always been there. He had felt something similar after walking into the doors of Grimmauld Place for the first time, but the only memories rising to surface there were of misery long-replaced. Here, every bit of youthful joy and love rose and flickered through his mind like stained-glass colours through snow, and every unremarkable step they had ever made on the square seemed precious in a fragile kind of way.
Chapter 14 - Shedding the Maker's Skin
“Lyall Lupin,” Fenrir said, smiling at the infinitesimal jerk Remus’ body gave. “I knew you came from money, boy. You’re his son, aren’t you?”
Remus went cold.
“Soulless, evil and deserving of nothing but death,” Fenrir quoted. “That is what he believes.”
A rage Remus had never felt before was travelling up his spine, fossilising hatred into the marrow of his bones.
Chapter 15 - Ozymandias
Once upon a time, Voldemort had looked at Snape and seen a mirror, a broken mirror of course, because Severus did not have even a shadow of his charisma, charm, looks, or skill. But even so, when Severus had come to him, an angry, profoundly gifted young half-blood brewing with hatred over his Muggle heritage, he had been so hopeful at his promise. They had both seemed to view the world in the same way; they both understood that magic was where power lay. Magic had made Voldemort immortal and then mortal again. They both respected it in a way nobody else did, and Voldemort had thought he found someone who could equal Bellatrix’s esteem.
But Severus’s weakness had been disgustingly banal. To think that it was lust of all things to claim him, and lust for a plain Mudblood at that. And now, it was the same, only for Lucius’s dullard of a wife.
Chapter 16 - In Noctem (Carry My Soul)
The idea of it makes me feel ill. He is no longer whole; his soul is distorted. He is no better than those vile creatures that guard Azkaban. He intended to murder Kreacher, who has been serving our family for generations. Our family, whose blood is pure and unbroken, has been used to destroy the soul of a magical being. It has become clear to me now. This monster will ruin us all more than any mudblood ever will.
Chapter 17 - Wings to the Kingdom
Until the time Death claims me, let the moth sing to your bones: I loved you since I saw you. I loved you when I hated you. I loved you when you betrayed us. I loved you when you destroyed me.
Yours, Gellert.
Chapter 18 - The Last Enemy (Part 2)
The window brought in a draft of salt as Remus cut up chicken for the Order lunch.  Tonks was just beside him, mashing the potatoes with zeal, her arm brushing up against his own on occasion. He felt embarrassed, it was ridiculous the degree to which any proximity to her affected him. It was the isolation of the cottage, he thought, that seemed to keep them away from the dark cloud hovering above them.  It was the rhythm of the sea, a comforting lullaby of a different world, a different life.
Chapter 19 - A Lament in the Ashes
Where is my golden palace? Where is my ivory bed? Where is the joy of my morning hour? Where the Sons of Eternity are singing, Draco thumbed through the book from the shelves in the bedroom. Years ago, he would have scoffed at the idea of perusing a book of poetry written by a Muggle.
Chapter 20 - Epilogue
“It must be nice,” he said. “To start again every time you die. You can make as many mistakes as you want and be reborn from them.”
Fawkes trilled. The corner of Serverus’s mouth lifted.

Daily Dose of Dramione fanfiction 85:
The Disappearances of Draco Malfoy by Speechwriter (Rated M) The night that Harry and Dumbledore return from the cave, the Death Eaters are delayed from reaching the top of the Astronomy Tower for one more minute. Draco Malfoy lowers his wand. A Deathly Hallows rewrite in which Draco accepts Dumbledore's offer to fake his death and go into hiding with the Order of the Phoenix.
COMPLETE: Yes TYPE: Multi-Chapter CATEGORY: Alternate universe, War, takes place during Deathly Hallows
MY OPINION: This fic was pretty awesome. It is crazy how much of the original book was kept but all of the adventures of the 7th book were completely tweaked. I loved the fact that Lucius and Narcissa played a part in it and how authentic the build up between Draco and Hermione was. Also no Ron and Harry bashing made me very happy. The fic didn't have any hardcore smut description and I didn't even mind which really surprised me. This was another fic that I listened to instead of read on Spotify. ETL Echo are magicians with their podfics and they do all of their work for free.

Temptation on the Warfront by alizarincrims0n
Summary:
Draco Malfoy is forced into hiding with the Golden Trio and dragged into their search for horcruxes. What ensues is a journey of redemption, unexpected friendships and an unwanted, turbulent romance with Harry Potter. Warnings for swearing, sexual content, and dark themes. Rating: Explicit Word Count: 180,305 Link to Fic: https://archiveofourown.org/works/4373594/chapters/9926705
My Thoughts: I have replaced canon with this fic in my mind. Temptation on the Warfront is Deathly Hallows to me. There is so much to love in this fic-Draco redemption, Muggle clothes, Draco’s Patronus, so so much more. If you’re in the mood for a canon rewrite, this is a must read.

It Feels Like This - Chapter 16
The next morning, after breakfast, Hermione felt the tent needed some rearranging. “We don’t need three bunks, do we?” she concluded, looking around. “I can take Ron’s old one under yours and we can use the space mine’s in now for potions. It’ll be easier than taking up half the kitchen and it’ll give us more room.” She looked through the stack of books she had piled up on the table for the right one.
Harry let her work quietly, helping where he could with moving furniture and setting things up, gathering supplies up from one table to the other, and when they were done, he had to admit it had been a smart move. With the temperature brewing potions had gotten to in the past, the new setup left a little more room for the heat to escape and distribute a little more evenly throughout the tent.
Hermione ran a hand through her hair once she was done, looking around. It still felt a little empty in Ron’s absence, especially since she’d gotten so used to him being around all the time in the past few months, but with two bunks and two chairs, the tent felt like theirs. Their own little escape from the outside world. It seemed too good to be true, and there was no way it would last. But while it did, she could make the most of it.
She couldn’t stop thinking about their kiss last night. She’d thought about it as she went to sleep; she thought about it this morning, and she thought about it now, when he was standing there grinning at her. But if she kissed him every time she wanted to, she’d probably never stop, which was incredibly frustrating. “There is another spell I’ve been wanting to work on that might come in handy,” she said, trying to get her mind off things. Plus, this would be fun and she could let off some steam.

The Disappearances of Draco Malfoy by SpeechWriter (A03)
Overall Rating: 5/5
Synopsis: The night that Harry and Dumbledore return from the cave, the Death Eaters are delayed from reaching the top of the Astronomy Tower for one more minute. Draco Malfoy Lowers his wand. A Deathly Hallows rewrite in which Draco accepts Dumbledore’s offer to fake his death and go into hiding with the Order of the Phoenix.
Major Themes: Deathly Hallows rewrite, forced proximity, complex Draco redemption arc, slow burn romance (but not agonizingly so), intellectual’s version of smut (aka really intelligent conversations and expressing feelings), minor miscommunication trope, he’s good with kids (heart flutter).
Reasoning for Rating:
- I want to start by saying that I have seen this fic being recommended a few places, but I was wary to read it because I figured the “Deathly Hallows” rewrite aspect would mean a very stale reproduction of the original but just with Dramione. I want to thank @orchita for being the one to encourage me to start it because boy was I wrong.
- This re-write follows a situation in which Draco realistically surrenders to the Order and ends up getting swept up into the Golden Trio’s hunt for the Deathly Hallows. I want to emphasize the use of the word “realistically” because as I was reading this I genuinely could see this happening. Draco’s redemption arc is actually one of my favorite aspects of this fic because he is not immediately incensed by the Order and is head-over-heels ready to drop everything and defeat Voldemort. Instead we get insight into why Draco thinks the way he does and how his upbringing has not only made him who he was in Hogwarts, but how it makes him question Voldemort’s vision for the world. It is complex, grueling, realistic, and memorable. I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m picky with Hogwarts era fics, especially the 8th year trope, because Draco is rarely given the redemption arc he (and Hermione) needs in order for me to actually want them together. The Disappearances of Draco Malfoy does not have that issue. If you want/enjoy a good, complex Draco redemption arc this is definitely for you.
- Secondly, the butterfly effect of Draco joining the Golden Trio in their hunt is just beautifullllllll. I can’t get over how important he is and I will explain. First, despite Weasley being a Pure Blood, Hermione being knowledgeable, and Harry having insight to Dumbledore’s plans, Draco is Pure-Blood, Knowledgable, and has insight on Voldemort. He is literally the perfect addition to the group and helps fill in the blanks that the others can’t. Thus, because of his knowledge and understanding of the Death Eaters, their expedition takes different turns than that of JKR’s Deathly Hallows. So, while the mission is the same, the journey is vastly new and fresh.
- As for the Dramione, I am absolutely crazy over the writing for them here. Personally, the reason I love Dramione so much is because they are so similar intellectually and logically, but their differences in upbringing create the most agonizing angst and confusion. Those aspects are evident in this fic. Notably, this is a slow burn but not excruciatingly so. I really enjoyed this because as much as I love a drawn out story, when Dramione gets together in this fic it changes how the two act within their mission in such a way that makes my reader heart flutter. Also, had it been the type of slow burn that doesn’t happen until the final moments the story, it would not have been as passionate and I probably would have gotten more annoyed because it just wouldn’t make sense.
- More specifically, there is such a tenderness in the way that this pair is written in this fic that makes it so genuine. Most fics I’ve read are way past the Hogwarts/Deathly Hallows era and so the two interact in a more adult way (i.e. Hermione really stands her ground and there’s lots of bickering before they get close). But, what SpeechWriter has done with this is so beautiful because in every way possible you are reminded that these are teenagers on the cusp of becoming young adults who have been tasked - whether they want to or not - with the responsibility of saving the world. So, you have these two kids who grew up in such polar opposite conditions and they’re fighting what they’ve been taught about the other and they’re scared, they’re growing, they’re learning, and in the midst of it all they’re falling for the other. Oh my God it’s poetic.
- This kind of goes hand-in-hand with Draco’s redemption arc, but it’s also separate enough that I wanted it on its own. Basically, as Draco works with the Golden Trio on the Hallows he is interacting with Harry and Ron as well (obviously). With most fics one of the undeniable hurdles is getting Harry and Ron’s approval (or at the very least, understanding) of Draco. With this fic, they are interacting closely from almost the beginning and so you see a more close up and in-depth relationship blossom between the three. Obviously it’s not all rainbows and sunshine at first, but the way these three grow together is one of my favorite parts of the fic because it’s so wholesome while staying in character. A very hard task indeed, but SpeechWriter does it flawlessly.
- Aside from the Dramione and the Deathly Hallows plot, this book is simply gorgeously written. The devil is quite literally in the details. From character’s personalities and mannerisms, to describing settings and feelings, and introducing new scenes and point of views, the quality of this fic was beyond any of my hopes going into it. I knew within the first chapter that this was going to be amazing purely from the writing alone and believe me I am a stickler for good writing (hence my username). I usually fly through fics that I enjoy (though I am a slow reader so this means 3-5 days), but this one was different. I enjoyed it of course, my review alone shows that, but the writing is so good I couldn’t help but take my precious time and enjoy every possible sentence I read. Also, it’s long as hell and I couldn’t help but take longer than a week to read it if I wanted to.
- Furthermore, the imagination to create new side plots is genius. Just when you’re feeling complacent SpeechWriter throws you off guard and right back into the fic. THIS NEXT SENTENCE COULD BE INTERPRETED AS A SPOILER, but for me personally the end of Chapter 22 and the entirety of Chapter 23 is such a perfect example of this that I had to set my phone down for a solid three hours in contemplation.
- Now, you’ll know I’ve tagged Minor Miscommunication under Major Themes. Personally, I love a miscommunication trope when it’s done right. An example of what I don’t like is when a character overhears only part of a conversation and then react on only what they heard instead of trying to clarify. I think it’s cheap. So, to clarify this fic does have a few instances of the miscommunication trope that I’m not sure if I can explain without spoilers. However, it is relatively minor and is written very well. I know a lot of people don’t like this trope and I think it’s for the same reason I don’t, so if you’re one of those people don’t let my tag push you away from this fic.
- The last thing I wanted to mention was the length of this fic. While 33 chapters is not a lot in hindsight, the chapters are really long and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have some chapters roll into the next day. I know SpeechWriter has undergone edits to shorten it and I think they are finished. However, despite the length and the edits, I enjoy that SpeechWriter hasn’t sacrificed attention to detail and quality for shorter length. This is a long fic, it will take a while to get through, but it is so worth it.
Overall:
This is the first War Era fic I’ve read in a long time so I was on the fence as to whether I would enjoy it. Mainly because these fics have Draco freshly out of the Death Eaters and so the road to redemption is a hard one to accomplish and not everyone can write it the way I think is deserved and realistic. Now, I know that is hugely subjective and I’m not pretending as if I speak for everyone, but I am a self-proclaimed snob about it because I think it’s a very delicate situation. I mean, how can you go from being a part of a Pure-Blood Elitist organization to falling for a Muggle Born without the proper groveling? But that’s besides the point. This fic is long in length, but if you’re wanting quality writing and one of the best Draco Redemption arcs you’ll ever read PAIRED with a relationship formed out of war this is perfect for you. If you’re like me and you don’t seek out this era I think this might be a pleasant change in pace for you. Overall, amazing writing, plot, characters, and redemption. There are also two additional one-shot shorts to this series that I haven’t read yet, but I probably will this weekend.
Like always, you can read “The Disappearances of Draco Malfoy” by SpeechWriter on A03.

HP Fic Rec Fest: Day 8
Today's prompt from @hprecfest: A canon-divergent fic
Fic: The Disappearances of Draco Malfoy
Author: @batmansymbol (speechwriter on ao3)
Pairing: Draco/Hermione, others I won't spoil, this is a full ensemble cast fic
Rating: M
Why I rec this: This is THE Deathly Hallows rewrite for me. Beginning with the astronomy tower scene, we get to see what happens when Draco actually accepts Dumbledore's offer of clemency. What follows is a brilliant reimagining of the horcrux hunt and the rest of the canon events in DH. I was floored by the creativity of this author in how they wove in canon elements and crafted such a fabulous story of redemption in the midst of a horrifying war. There is a chapter at Malfoy Manor that I won't spoil but I will just say I was holding my breath the entire time. The character arcs in this are spot on (Ron in particular, my goodness.) I also like to rec this fic to those HP fic readers who are skeptical of dramione as a ship. If you want to dip your toe into it and are wondering how/why draco x hermione could ever work, this is the fic I would suggest.
