it’s routine, every week, steve and robin go out. they get a little drunk, they dress up, and they dance. steve forgets all about work, about the past, about his dead love life. forgets it all and has fun with his best friend.

and it’s routine, every week, to go get the best pancakes the midwest has to offer. at denny’s. at 3am.

he gets the same thing every time and sits at the same booth, with robin. in their now sweaty club clothes, still tipsy and giggly and winding down from the heady buzz of the music and lights. they go to denny’s and steve is always starving, has been waiting, secretly thinking about it all night. can’t help closing his eyes around the first sweet mouthful.

he hadn’t wanted to go the first time, his feet hurt and he wanted his bed. but robin insisted and steve could never really say no to her. and that’s when he saw him, part of the reason he goes back every week and sits at the same booth. the denny’s line cook. the most beautiful guy steve’s ever seen. the very guy who makes the best pancakes the midwest has to offer, at denny’s, at 3am.

who steve can’t get up the nerve to talk too.

he’s just, scared. especially because he’s always a little drunk, worries that the guy won’t take him as genuine, won’t believe him that it’s been months and he’s all he can think about. that he sits at that booth because it gives him a view for the pass window, gets to see his hands slide the plates up and pull the tickets down and he has long fingers and lithe forearms and the biggest, prettiest brown eyes.

so sunday morning always comes and steve’s sober again, but he just can’t make himself go back.

he doesn’t even know his name.

but he want to. wants to know what he looks like not in work clothes, what he does in his spare time. wants to know if he’d still like steve in his work clothes, instead of shorts that are cut so high he’s almost showing cheek, or shirts that show the softness hes accepted at his stomach. if he even likes any of that at all, could ever like it. could like steve.

but then robin has to go visit her parents for the weekend. and without her there, there’s no club, no drinks, no dancing under the lights. it’s just steve, in their little apartment, thinking about work and the past and his none existent love life.

and the little pep talk robin gave before leaving floats through his mind. telling him he could try, if he wants, she believes in him, and hes a catch, she would know, she knows him best.

so when sleep won’t take him steve sees it as a sign. he switches his sweats for jeans but keeps the hoodie he’s in, wants to be comfortable, and he goes to get the best pancakes the midwest has to offer, at denny’s, at 3am. like every saturday night. but he’s sober. nervous but he needs to go. needs to be brave.

needs to find out how the pretties line cook makes the best pancakes around.

needs to know his name.

Thinking about electricity in the zones… as we know, battery city’s power cuts off just outside the city wall. But do the killjoys tap into it somehow? Do wires run underground all throughout the desert, branching out from the centerpoint that is battery city? Is there a power plant still up in running, defended by killjoys? Do places like Doctor Death’s radio shack that have power rely on a generator that they routinely refill with gasoline? Or do they use solar power?

Gasoline isn’t hard to come by in the zones, some pumps are still kept supplied by the city so generators are plausible. Solar power would make the most sense on the desert, but it would probably be hard to get ahold of the tech. You can only salvage so much. There’s probably a mixture of both. Lots of killjoys just go without having power, they’re fine with candles and campfires wherever they call home. I wonder what the diner would run on, if the Fab Four would bother with electricity.

Anyway I don’t know where I was going with this, I just think the ways different killjoys would live and what they would use electricity for if they have it are neat.

messy not-really love triangle where four people become friends in a bar. two of them start screwing around while the guy prefers open relationships and the girl's friend is hella toxic and in love/obsessed with her so she starts sleeping with the guy to prove he's shitty. the 2nd guy is there to be the foil/naiive one that's new to this whole world tbh. it's just a really great drama where there isn't a single character you're meant to like or cheer for. they're all sucky people in their own way lol. anyway, it was literally made around and to promote Park Won's album of the same name.

Please Find Her (2017)

it's CUTE, it's an ad for Itaewon, you learn some Korean at the end of every episode lol. about a mixed Dutch man named Jan who flies to SK to find the girl he fell in love with. the plot's a little all over the place, but it's an ad. and it's cute >:( Lee Hyun Jae is the love of my life. honestly this one's just fun! i love every single main actor, i love the dark witchy aesthetic. each ep follows a different main subject who needs their lives fixed in some way. but ofc if you make a deal with the devil/a witch, it's not gonna go exactly how you expected. idk i love this one, it's got my mother Song Ji Hyo in it

Little Mom Scandal (2008) and Little Mom Scandal Season 2 (2008)

a very old one that i watch yeeears ago but it still holds a special place in my heart. super real, less fairy-tale idealistic romance, as most 2000s dramas were. it's about an 18-year-old teen mom and her struggles with raising a baby, being a wife, and trying to live her life. the friendships in this one are what stuck out the most tbh. they're the primary focus, despite the title/attention grabber.

Birthcare Center (2020)

this one's about a successful career woman who suddenly finds herself pregnant. she spends the time after giving birth in a birthcare center, common places for moms to get help when starting out. she's self concious about being much older than the other women but makes a bunch of friends in the other mothers who have stories and struggles of their own and she actually has a healthy relationship with her husband. we love to see it. uh, found family :( <3

The Killer's Shopping List (2022)

about a guy who has an incredible memory and is locally praised for stopping a dangerous robbery when he was a kid but struggles to pass his civil service exam. he's determined to make it while working at his mom's convenience store. but a murder happens at the apartment building he frequently delivers to and they're huge suspects bc the delivery bag at the victim's house. so he, the market workers, and his cop gf (Seolhyun) try to solve the serial murders themselves. it has good queer rep imo, not gimmicky but not so subtle it might as well not be there.

Our D-Day (2023)

big tw for suicide mention, attempts, and ideation. tw for abuse, as well

it's still airing! one week left. but it's about a suicidal 30-year-old and his friends all trying to navigate their lives. he literally spends the entire drama so far trying to figure out how to end things and you slowly learn why throughout. it's pretty dark right from the beginning tbh but they balance it with humor that might not be everyone's taste. tbh it just feels real to me, so that part doesn't personally bother me. i do know why it would affect someone else, though. definitely not for people sensitive to the subject matter.
