Scenes from new movie starring Sir Anthony Hopkins shot in Whitehead
Filming has taken place in Whitehead for a new movie featuring acclaimed actors Sir Anthony Hopkins and Matthew GoodE.
Whitehead Railway Museum was the recent setting for scenes from ‘Freud’s Last Session’.
Set on the eve of World War Two in 1939, the film sees Sigmund Freud (Sir Anthony) invite Belfast-born Christian author CS Lewis for a debate on the existence of God. Having taken up the invite, CS Lewis, played by Goode, was present at Whitehead - suitably dressed as a rural Oxfordshire station - in order to catch the train to see Freud.
Also present were many extras, including a platoon of soldiers, a class of primary school children dressed for evacuation, and some of their ‘mothers’ to see them off.
Tumblr media
100-year-old steam engine No. 461 was used in the Whitehead film shoot (archive image).
The station building, which normally houses Platform 3 restaurant, underwent a makeover so that it looked like a period 1930s English railway halt.
The Railway Preservation Society of Ireland (RPSI) laid on a train of 100-year-old steam engine No. 461, which is usually on display at the museum, plus three heritage carriages and a luggage van.
Tumblr media
The locomotive was out of steam but fitted with a steam machine, while the RPSI’s train rides steam engine No. 3BG was on hand to shunt the train up and down the siding as required. The train had to be filmed in three main positions:
Sitting stationary at the platform whilst passengers / evacuees embarked and disembarked;
Departing with CS Lewis aboard (in daylight);
Arriving back with CS Lewis having met Freud (in the dark).

The weather was bright and sunny for the daylight shoots, and calm for the filming after darkness fell. The work was completed by 10.30pm [April 18, 2023] and a cheer went up from the cast and crew because this was the final sequence in the shoot.

Lisa Adair, RPSI general manager, said: “We are regularly in demand from film-makers because we can provide steam engines and vintage carriages. We are always pleased to be able to assist.
“We are told that Freud’s Last Session will be released around December, so we look forward to seeing the finished product in the cinema.”

Matthew Goode proves himself as a reliable character performer as Lewis. Squaring off against Hopkins is no easy feat, but the actor holds his own with quiet determinedness. Hopkins is at his most interesting when his character wrestles with his daughter’s lesbian relationship with fellow academic and future life partner, Dorothy Burlingham (Jodi Balfour). Holding on to the now-antiquated idea that her sexuality is due to a failing on his part, the veteran actor plays up the character’s struggle to balance his insecurities with his psychoanalytical knowledge.
While the debate about God’s existence has been made before, Freud’s Last Session intellectualizes it in an accessible that humanizes these looming figures. In an overcrowded Oscar race, it’s doubtful this British period drama will grab any of the nominations but for a contemplative, quiet, and thoughtful drama that’s perfect for the Christmas season. Freud’s Last Session is just what the doctor ordered.

COMPLEX CHARACTERS
Opening today:
Tumblr media
Freud's Last Session--The "session" in question is fictional, or at best nervily speculative--a meeting of the titular psychoanalytic pioneer with the Christian apologist C. S. Lewis. It's September of 1939; England has just declared war on Hitler's Germany, and Freud, who has fled Austria for England with his obsessively devoted daughter Anna, is in the agonizing homestretch of terminal mouth cancer. Irked by Lewis' parody of him in The Pilgrim's Regress (1933), Freud has invited the young Oxford don to his house in London for a civil but contentious chat.
Freud is played by Anthony Hopkins; Lewis is played by Matthew Goode. The direction is by Matthew Brown from a script he co-wrote with the American playwright Mark St. Germain, based on St. Germain's play (which I saw well-produced by Arizona Theatre Company in 2013). The play is a two-hander, but this handsomely-produced movie expands on it with scenes involving Anna (Liv Lisa Fries) and her partner Dorothy Burlingham (Jodi Balfour), flashbacks to Freud's childhood traumas and to Lewis' PTSD from the trenches in the earlier war, his eyebrow-raising cohabitation with Janie Moore (Orla Brady), etc.
But the juice in the film is still in the theatrical sparring between the two leads, especially Hopkins as the chuckling, cheerfully furious Freud. He's as lovably cantankerous here as he was as Pope Benedict in 2019's The Two Popes. For his part, Goode is smart enough not to make Lewis saintly or jolly; he gives him an edge of defensive aloofness alongside a deep decency.
It's hard to say which, if either, of the two men's viewpoints St. Germain and Brown are most in symapthy with. Many of us are likely to feel ourselves somewhere between Freud's staunch and bitter rationalism and Lewis' somehow rather half-hearted pose of orthodoxy. But the point of the film seems to be that what underlies both is, at least partly, existential terror, of a sort to which intelligent, intensely imaginative people like these two are particularly subject. Neither strict nonbelief nor strict belief seems to offer much deliverance.
Tumblr media
Mean Girls--"It's a cautionary tale..." So the Greek chorus characters Janis and Damian sing to us at the beginning of this musical remake of the well-loved 2004 teen comedy, pared down from the 2018 Broadway version. This may be the secret of Mean Girls, in each iteration: it really is a moral tale with a cautionary point, and the heroine really does go to the dark side.
As you'll recall, Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) is a smart kid who grew up in campsites in Africa; her mother (Jenna Fischer) is a researcher. When she lands at a suburban American high school for junior year, the divisions in cafeteria clique and caste strike her as similar to those in the animal kingdom. She gets sucked into spending lunches with "The Plastics," a circle of glamorous sycophants led by uber-mean girl Regina George (Renée Rapp). Cady agrees, initially, at the urging of artsy girl Janis (Auli'i Cravalho) and big gay Damian (Jaquel Spivey) to serve as a double agent in a revenge plot against Regina. But gradually, of course, the plastic begins to take over for real.
Or maybe the secret is just that the film, scripted, like the original, by Tina Fey (freely adapting a book by Rosalind Wiseman), is funny and sweet, but not so sweet that it forgets to be, you know, mean. Or maybe it's that most of the songs, by Nell Benjamin and Jeff Richmond, are delightful, and buoyantly staged by directors Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez, Jr.
Overall, these actors don't have the vibrancy or distinctive personalities of the original film's cast, but they make up for this with terrific musical performing. Rapp brings such a baleful moan to "Meet the Plastics" that she really is a little scary, and Rice shades herself from guileless to conniving very believably. A few vets are around; Fey and Tim Meadows reprise their roles from the first film, and Busy Phillips and Jon Hamm contribute funny bits. The standouts, however, are Cravalho as Janis and Spivey as Damian, both equipped with gorgeous voices and the ability to act while they're belting.
Fey's generous-hearted--and sensible--take on popularity and self-esteem has provided a solid and unsentimental piece of role modeling for teens (and the teens that endure within most adults) for twenty years now. Maybe this movie will extend it for another twenty.

DECEMBER 3: Anna Freud (1895-1982)
Anna Freud, the daughter of legendary psychologist Sigmund Freud, was born on this day in 1895. Today, Anna is most well remembered for being a pioneer of psychoanalytical child psychology and for living a happy lesbian life despite her own father’s claims that lesbianism was a psychological death sentence.
Tumblr media
A young Anna Freud photographed in 1912 (x).
Anna Freud was born on December 3, 1895 in Vienna, Austria-Hungary. She was the sixth and youngest daughter born to Sigmund Freud and his wife Martha. She later claimed to have grown up in a comfortable bourgeois household despite not having much of a relationship with her mother and being raised by a nanny named Josephine in her place. Anna was closer to her father than any of her other sisters and claimed to have learned more from growing up around Sigmund and his friends than from attending traditional school.
In 1914, Anna began a career as an elementary school teacher. Although she loved the work and was profusely praised by her superiors, she was forced to leave the position in 1920 after multiple bouts of illness. In the following years, she came under analysis by her father and began to foray into psychoanalytical studies herself. Anna soon became a member of the Vienna Psychoanalytical Society and began teaching child analysis at the Vienna Psychoanalytic Training Institute. By 1935, she had become the director of the institute and had published her magnum opus, The Ego and the Mechanisms of Defence, which is now seen as the backbone of ego psychology.
Anna’s partner for over 50 years was Dorothy Burlingham, the heiress to the Tiffany jewelry fortune. The two first met in 1925 when Dorothy traveled from New York to Vienna to have her four children psychoanalyzed by Anna’s father. Although Anna denied the sexual nature of her relationship with Dorothy during the beginning of their relationship, it is undeniable that the two had a partnership. The two moved in together in 1929 and Anna would act as stepparent to Dorothy’s children for the rest of her life.
After fleeing Vienna at the outbreak of World War II, Anna, Dorothy, and their children found a new home in England. During and after the war, Anna worked for The Hampstead War Nursery for children war victims and then later The Bulldogs Bank Home for children who had survived concentration camps. She eventually passed away on October 9, 1982 in London. Her ashes are laid to rest next to those of her lifelong partner, Dorothy.

Anna Freud
She was a British psychoanalyst of Austrian-Jewish descent born in Vienna and the youngest child of Sigmund Freud.
She followed the path of her father and contributed to the field of psychoanalysis, and she may be considered one of the founders of psychoanalytic child psychology.
After the Freud family were forced to leave Vienna in 1938 with the advent of the Nazi regime in Austria, she resumed her work in child psychology establishing the Hampstead Child Therapy Course and Clinic in 1952 (now the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families).
Anna Freud appears to have had a comparatively unhappy childhood, in which she may have suffered from depression which caused eating disorders.
She was a lively child with a reputation for mischief.  In adolescence she took a precocious interest in her father's work and was allowed to sit in on the meetings of the newly established Vienna Psychoanalytical Society which Freud convened at his home.
Anna Freud created the field of child psychoanalysis, and her work contributed greatly to our understanding of child psychology. She also developed different techniques to treat children. A fundamental principle of Anna Freud's work is that every child should be recognised as a person in his or her own right.
While Anna was the closest intellectual and emotional companion of Sigmund Freud, she was also a lesbian. Freud taught that lesbianism is always the fault of the father and is curable by psychoanalysis. Hence, Anna involuntarily became an object of his inappropriate experiments.Nevertheless, Freud failed to “correct” Anna’s lesbianism.
Anna Freud's life-long romantic partner was Dorothy Burlingham, an American child psychoanalyst and educator. Anna and Dorothy soon developed intimate relationships and lived together as "companions".
Freud died in London on 9 October 1982. Her life-partner Dorothy Burlingham and several other members of the Freud family also rest there.

Aesthetic: I dunno, really. But I’ve been told I’m extra (I call it pretentious🙄). Like my tiny twin bed is covered by a deep blue fabric painted with flowers and peacocks (actually a shower curtain) with branches of fake magnolias sprouting from two corner posts. What can I say? I love lush beautiful things, but I am not rich and I am of this timeline. If I wasn’t, I would probably live in an old castle surrounded by deep rich dark colors while roaming around the forest at night barefoot in a diaphanous white dress, singing softly for my lost lover 🤦‍♀️ Either that, or art deco.
Languages: English and Filipino
Most iconic song: Depends on my mood. Right now it’s the epic version of Moonlight Sonata by Hidden Citizens.
Random fact: Tiffany & Co. jewelry heiress Dorothy Tiffany Burlingham (daughter of stained-glass artist Louis Comfort Tiffany), and psychoanalyst Anna Freud (daughter of Sigmund Freud) were life-partners and effectively raised Burlingham’s four children together. They met in 1925 because Burlingham’s son had a psychosomatic condition, and Freud treated him. Burlingham became a psychoanalyst too. Their ashes are together in a crematorium in London.

[I. Introduction - cont'd]
C. Psychoanalytic technique
For a long time (and, truth to tell, for all his life), Freud refused to analyze children. Little Hans, through an intermediary.
Historically, direct analysis of children appeared in 1926, with a series of lectures by A[nna] Freud at the Vienna psychoanalytic institute.
1927, report by A[nna] Freud at the Tenth International Congress of Psychoanalysis. Regular meetings in Vienna start from this date. The International Society of Psychoanalysis organizes two clinics,
one for children (directed by Sterba)
the other for adolescents (directed by Aichhorn)
Immediately before the war, experimental crèche for children from one to two years old (with Dorothy Burlingham).
[Q:]
what is the reason for this delay?
what is the reason for the difficulties still encountered for the analysis of children?
[A:] The fact that it is difficult, maybe impossible, to determine the criteria for what is pathological in the child.

PSICANÁLISE INFANTIL
Tumblr media
