september is dystonia awareness month!
dystonia is a group of movement disorders that occurs when nerves in certain muscles are too active. this causes these muscles to contract involuntarily. these contractions can cause parts of the body to be held in uncomfortable positions and can cause muscle spasms.
dystonia can have a few different causes, ranging from genetic to a side effect of certain medications, like antipsychotics. depending on the cause treatment options for it can be certain medications (anticholinergics, muscle relaxants, or dopamine promoters), physical therapy, botox injections to paralyze the overactive nerves, or a combination of those treatments.
some people find sensory tricks useful to help calm their symptoms down. as an example i get muscle spasms on the right side of my face, and having something touching my head calms them down. i wear band-aids on my face due to this. the sensory tricks that someone finds useful can vary depending on the type of dystonia as well.
to help spread awareness you can wear blue during the month of september. certain landmarks and buildings in the US will be illuminated with blue lights on specific dates to raise awareness as well. you can find out the dates through this link.
you can also help out by donating to the dystonia medical research foundation if you have the funds for it. and if you're someone who has dystonia you can also sign up to be a brain donor through them.
i hope everyone has a good september!

Oh whump writers of The Bear fandom,
Consider Carmy with limb dystonia in his right (veg-chopping, sauce-stirring) hand, this being a lifelong disorder of muscle contractions which can sometimes be caused by overuse
Factors such as electrolyte imbalances (potentially caused by frequent vomiting), dehydration, and stress can put someone at much higher risk too
Consider it 1. For the good whump possibilities of him dealing with the pain as well as not really being able to cook for a little bit because his hand is so fucked. Even if he lets it unlock and stop spasming and everything, getting back to work too soon could potentially put him right back where he started
But also consider it 2. For the top tier narrative shit. It could essentially serve as a clear physical manifestation of Carmy’s overwork and lack of self-care. Have his unhealthy obsession with cooking cause muscle spasms that stop him from cooking. It essentially forces him to reevaluate his relationship with the restaurant and how he can be a part of it without it tearing him apart.
Show how being a part of the culinary world has ripped him to shreds mentally and physically. It has done horrible things to him, but it has shown him confidence and interpersonal connection and just a passion for life that nothing else could even try to.
Have him learn how to make The Bear something that doesn’t require self-flagellation for good results. Have dystonia hurt like a bitch but also teach him to be kinder to himself.
(Also, I have zero personal experience with dystonia, so if you do and have any qualms with this post, feel free to comment, and I’ll do my best to edit accordingly!!)

in need of involuntary movement advice
hi besties, so i have lupus that is currently untreated and have been developing a lot of neurological issues, most likely as a consequence of this. we are suspecting:
1) cerebellar ataxia because i list to the left, i have an intention tremor, my balance has gone to hell standing & walking and is worse with my eyes closed, and i’ve got dysmetria (issues with finger-to-nose test)
2) some sort of movement disorder(s) affecting the basal ganglia. i experience what seems to be dystonia (slow twisting movements & muscles being held still in a certain position), chorea (jerky sudden movements), and ballismus (large flinging movements). the involuntary movements seem to get worse with directed movements, especially fine motor skills (possibly in some sort of relationship with the intention tremor), and strong emotions such as distress or excitement.
these have been getting significantly worse recently, and i’m especially concerned because my involuntary movements have “spread” to involve my legs and throat/tongue. i’m really struggling to find any practical advice & not just bullshit about exercise & taking care of your mental health or how brave caregivers are. my questions are including but not limited to:
if i’m walking while my legs start flinging, what do i do? i’ve started using my upright rollator around the house but i don’t think it could keep me from falling in that scenario
harm reduction in cooking for myself? i already don’t use knives but i’m worried about spilling boiling water or injuring myself with scissors
how to not break dishes. i need to use ceramic & glass because they can more reliably be cleaned for my allergy needs. someone suggested several small tables between the kitchen and couch which i’m going to try but would love any additional ideas as well
eating. i already use adaptive silverware and i think i’m going to invest in some bibs but it’s still so difficult
advice for choking - how to minimize it, what to do during it, etc
do you just take a pillow with you all the time or…? like i start hitting things around me really hard
we’re trying to find a community member who would be willing to drive me to appointments but in the event that i have to take a lyft somewhere, what do i tell the driver in case i start whacking their car?
if i for some reason have to be out alone, advice for not getting murdered by the police and/or forcibly hospitalized?
thank you so much to anyone who has advice, including any resources on where to look up this type of information!! i would really appreciate any reblogs for visibility

Had a neurologist appointment today that went really well. It was nice to just be...heard for once. I started in on my "my doctors aren't listening to me and are making things up" speech and she started to cut me off until I cut her off and explained that a certain hospital near us had actually documented in my medical record that I'd thrown up on purpose. (I didn't. They'd asked about nausea but unfortunately I'm dissociative in the hospital...especially if you're trying to involuntarily hospitalize me) and she stopped. She documented my symptoms and referred me to another provider who can actually help evaluate me for Parkinsons because my symptoms are more than just functional neurological disorder and I'm tired of being dismissed. She actually watched my videos of my tremoring and my muscles convulsing involuntarily and it switching sides.

Hey there, do you have some cool sources on other types on involuntary movement that are not tics?
Yes, I do! Here is a list of involuntary movements, a simple description, and links to resources on them:
Akathisia -> an inability to remain still
StatPearls article
cleveland clinic article (very good)
Akinesia -> the loss of spontaneous, voluntary muscle movement
StatPearls article (free article)
healthline article
Athetosis -> slow, continuous, involuntary writhing movements commonly affecting arms and hands
healthline article
Chorea -> rapid, chaotic movements that seem to flow from one body part to another
NINDS article
StatPearls article
Dystonia -> sustained or repetitious muscular contractions; often produces abnormal posture
mayo clinic article
NINDS article
StatPearls article
Hemiballismus -> sudden, intermittent, flinging, or ballistic high amplitude movements commonly affecting proximal limb muscles
StatPearls article
Myoclonus → sudden, brief, involuntary muscle twitches
mayo clinic article
NINDS article
StatPearls article
Parkinsonism -> a clinical syndrome characterized by slowness, rigidity, tremor, and postural instability
StatPearls article
parkinson's disease vs parkinsonism
types of parkinsonism (parkinson's UK)
types of parkinsonism (parkinson's foundation)
Stereotypies -> repetitive, rhythmic movements with typical onset in early childhood
stereotypies in adults
medlink article
Tardive Dyskinesia -> uncontrollable and repetitive movements of the tongue, lips, face, trunk, and extremities
webmd article
Tics -> sudden, rapid, recurrent, and nonrhythmic movements or vocalizations
mayo clinic article on tourette syndrome
NINDS article on tourette syndrome
child mind institute article on tics and tourette
Tremor -> rhythmic back-and-forth or oscillating involuntary movements
NINDS article
classification of tremor
(at request I can find Tumblr or blog posts talking about personal experiences with some of these movements)
Basic definitions come from this article: https://www.psychiatrist.com/pcc/effects/drug-induced-abnormal-involuntary-movements-prevalence-and-treatment/

Anyone with Tourettes and or Dystonia got Ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs)? It was recommended to me by one Dr. because I have a tic where I twist my ankles to the side, then the dystonia sets in and keeps it like that for a bit. Wich makes walking dangerous and I keep falling and spraining my ankles.
Ik that an orthosis fixing my foot in a position would trigger the tics more but they couldn't happen. It would likely re-direct somewhere else.
I am still unsure tho.

Ever wonder what a dystopian wasteland with big anthropomorphic pandas would be like? Well good news, there was once a show called Wastelander Panda! … or at least I think there was.
With the exception of an IMDB page promising 2 whole seasons, there’s not much online besides these 3 episodes:
youtube
The next 2 episodes take place years later and follow a different panda. I prefer him to the first:
youtube
youtube
There’s even a trailer for what I think is a spin-off that might take place between episodes 1 and 2, and it sure looks finished, but again nothing I can find that remains online is clear.
youtube
Anyway, please enjoy something that probably existed at one time!
And if anyone knows more, please reblog with more info, thanks!
Update: I can confirm that Wastelander Panda: Exile existed, apparently retitled back to the original as just Wastelander Panda, because this (probably unofficial) YouTube playlist exists! 🎉

some very scary stuff in here for those of us building their happiness on playing musical instruments.
The bit that saved me came close to the end though:
"Perfectionist thinking, thought to be associated with dystonia, is a pre-requisite for entry into elite playing, with the expectation of a “clean” performance as the virtuoso’s signature. Researchers speculate that classical musicians are especially susceptible to dystonia, as opposed to jazz or other genre musicians, because of the limitations placed on personal expression by scored music, and the pressures to carbon-copy recordings of famous players."
Although I do play classical music, I have zero perfectionism in that endeavour and am playing it more like a jam session. So I'm hoping that I'm not at risk of the troubles discussed here ...

After a very physically demanding weekend, I screwed up my medication schedule somehow and ran out of spoons halfway through cleaning out the fridge; had to keep going so all my food wouldn't spoil. I will feel godawful (in pain, somehow both unable to move around and unable to sit still) for the next six hours and exhausted tomorrow; it will take a week to get my medication schedule back to normal and during that time there is a high possibility this will happen again. I am one of the lucky ones because my condition responds to medication.

So fuckin tired of being called crippled by people who only see me as their joke. Im tired of "friends" teasing me nonstop about the same old shit. Tired of hearing "oh im crippled too" over minor injuries that have no effect on your life because you want to compare yourself to my chronic, painful condition. Yes i joke about it because i have no other way of coping, that doesn't mean you make it all you ever joke about with me. Im tired of it. It hurts. Im tired of being your cripple. It never stops. I can't even ask them to stop because then im overdramatoc and hypocritical. Its bullshit.
