Digimon Frontier - Episode 20

Woohoo! 20 Episodes :D

Maybe I'm just a hater, but I found this one really boring. The plot was basically "this place is dark and scary...actually, maybe it's not that scary? Okay, time to battle." Hopefully they give me something to be invested in soon.

Notes:

I think this is the first time we've seen all the beast spirits together! Squad. I think that was the most exciting part of the episode to me.

I like how Trailmon can unlatch his entire roof and wall to dump the kids out. That would make a fun toy lol

The whole scene where they talk to Bokomon about not judging a book by its cover felt way too "hey kids! The moral of the story is..." No subtlety to be seen. Also, why are they teaching kids that the dark, creepy forest isn't that bad once you get to know it? Don't go into the forest kids! 😭

The Pipismon scene was pretty random (although it's kinda nice that they introduced a digimon just to be like "isn't nature cool?") I'm not sure what they were trying to accomplish with the tongue twisters, but it was fun hearing which ones they went with in Japanese versus English

I can't take Duskmon's Edgy McEdgelord design (and personality) seriously. He reminds me of Shadow the Hedgehog or something. His betrayal of Arbormon wasn't all that shocking since he hasn't been a team player this whole time. I guess it's kind of rare for a digimon villain tho? I wonder how the rest of the villain squad will react when they find out.

(Duskmon's outfit also kinda reminds me of the ugliest Haseo outfit lol).

I got all nostalgic for the 2004 and 2008 Hellboy movies recently... I love them because they have all the visual aesthetics of a grim-gritty Edgy McEdgelord ACTION movie, but then the characters will have little moments where they are disarmingly down to earth and charming. It got expanded on a little more in the sequel, but even in the first movie, we see that Hellboy himself is a BIG RED DEMON who fights other demons with his HUGE STONE FIST and also a gun that shoots JUMBO BULLETS... but he adopts almost every kitty he sees, is easily bribed with candybars, and when not irritated or trying to put on a tough-guy act, he a softie. When he’s not doing monster-fighting action-poses, he doesn’t really have intimidating body-language (even when he gets in a huff at Myers, it just doesn’t feel truly threatening... the only time he gets aggressive with regular people is around Manning, and that’s fair). Hellboy gets sent on missions by the BPRD because he’s tough and durable, he can survive most things that kill regular people, so he’s useful... but why does he WANT to do his job? Just because he cares. He likes people even though he doesn’t get to meet many, he wishes he COULD be part of the outside world, and even when he can’t, he still wants to protect it. The freaking a-hole nazi bad guys tried to bribe him with the life of the woman he loves, and attempted to manipulate him with “Humans see you as a monster, so you might as well just BE a monster”, but it didn’t work... because, as Myers reminds him, that’s not who he is (also, these jerks are kinda responsible for killing his dad, so I don’t know what they expected). Hellboy is very much just A Guy, who can go and fight giant DEMON SPACE SQUID GODS, and also just be dorky and huggable~

actually The Favorite (shhh) is only half-circled because idk, I think Yamato deserves some special place for being the very first Blorbo, my prototype for blorbos. And I know in me he is not THE favourite, Killian Jones still holds that place, but I feel it's unfair to not give him a special place.

My blorbos do no wrong and only I am right about them of course, but Yamato is an exception in the way that he fucks up and I LOVE IT. It's character flaws done right. Which is why he gets Bastard (affectionate). Almost got one line there, damn XD

I don't think I have to explain "in desperate need of therapy" and "Angst Machine". I want to catalogue every time each character cries in Adventure and see how high Yamato ranks, I wouldn't be surprised if he's actually, legitimately, first.

A muse sent by the gods, damn right he is. How else should I call the character that caused my whump awakening and was also the first to inspire me to make up fanfic? So much potential, so much angst, so many great relationship dynamics, both angsty and happy... mwah.

The "relate to them maybe a little too much"... yeah. As someone who spent the ages between 9 and 15 without a single friend and because of that I still have troubles making friends even though I deeply wish for some... yeah. Wish I didn't relate but I do.
