Lucien believed Jesminda was his mate. He believed strongly he’d found the highest form of love, a mating bond with someone he actually cared for and who reciprocated those same affections. That was the highest standard of love for the High Fae, and he’d been blessed to have it.

With her tragic and horrific death, Lucien believed he had lost his greatest love. That was it for him. No other love would compare or measure up. He grieved a love, a bond and a mate. That’s an unimaginable pain, but he moved forward with life believing he’d never get to experience this kind of love or connection again.

Time (Decades? Centuries? I forget.) went by, and then:

Friends, his voice broke. Because for so long he thought his one mate was gone. Because he’d grieved the loss of the bond. Because he realized his one possibility of a mate’s love had not been buried with the female he loved, whose torture and execution he was forced to witness, as he thought it’d been. Because something so potentially beautiful as the mating bond holds such horrific trauma for him.

So no, Lucien WHISPERING (not yelling) to Elain that she’s his mate is not a claiming, a possessing. It is heartbreak, shock, surprise, grief, tainted hope and cautious understanding.

I refuse to believe SJM would then turn around and give this character a rejected bond and make him settle for something other. Because no matter what, it would be a lesser love for Lucien and he certainly doesn’t deserve that.

Some folks: SJM foreshadowed a blood duel between Azriel and Lucien in the Bonus Chapter to win Elain’s heart/claim his mate.

Me, an intellectual: SJM foreshadowed the blood duel in regard to Lucien because he will use it to save Elain’s life, likely from Beron, because this time he will be powerful enough to stop Jesminda’s fate from repeating itself again.

I know everyone likes a good hate to love tension. It can be very satisfying and delicious dynamic.

But I just don't see it for Elain and Lucien.

Instead of "I hate you and I want you and that makes me hate you more" (Elain), I want more of a "I don't hate you. Not even a little bit, and that makes my confusion over what we are or could be worse. I'm so nervous around you because you make me feel things when I don't even know you" (Elain). I want Lucien to think "at least if she hated me, I would know she felt anything for me at all". I want nervous glances and polite words filled with tension and apprehension. I want there to be confusion, assuming how the other must feel about them, rather than heated jabs and deliberately pushing each other away. I want a slip in resolve and propriety where a comment teeters on too flirtatious and suddenly in an instant the atmosphere has shifted. I want questioning eyes and tight lips to morph into shy grins and coy glances. And all at once the strangers who are predestined soulmates are finding themselves unofficially courting each other. When the heck did that happen? But it feels so right and they can't stop now. I want their tension to be about whether the other will find them worthy of being their mate because there is now so much pressure knowing exactly what they are to each other. I want curiosity and missed moments, until finally one of them can't stand it and makes the first move, and the other is so relieved it's not just them.

Don't give me a watered down enemies to lovers with antagonistic fights and saying things they don't mean. That isn't Elain nor is it Lucien. Two characters who know how to carry themselves, restrain their instincts, and show the world what it wants to see about them. I want them stuck in a game of hiding how they really feel, thinking the other doesn't know, feeling hints of those emotions down the bond, until one day the silence is defeaning and the stiffness breaks with finally asking the question. Preferably in the rain.

She was able to hold the tears at bay, at least for now, at the sting of rejection that brought back memories of an older wound. On that night, she sat at her vanity, and something deep inside her urged her to open the drawer to her left. Inside was a small velvet box. Very carefully, Elain opened it and put on the pearl earrings—the same ones she had received earlier from her mate.

With a deep breath, she tucked her hair behind her ears. She hadn’t thanked him. Hadn’t told him that pearls had been her favorite. Elain stared at her reflection, at the way the pearl glimmered beautifully against her pointed ears, at the swirling brown of her eyes desperate to find recognition in the mirror. It felt as if she was about to crack wide open. Would he have found her to be what every other man or male regarded her—a mistake?

No, the bond inside her chest strummed. No, he wouldn’t have. He wouldn’t ever.

It terrified her how certain she was of that fact.

The first time it is mentioned is when Azriel is describing the necklace.

The second time?

He can see the image of Gwyns eyes lighting up upon seeing the necklace. He tucks it away down deep where it glows and the feeling of it is ´´a thing of secret, lovely beauty´´

make all the paragraphs you want in order to try to make it about Elain but CANON is Azriel saying the feeling of the image of Gwyn is A THING OF SECRET LOVELY BEAUTY.

Lets bfr Az got the necklace for Elain because she likes flowers. Thats the only connection. The rose and elain. Although elains favorite flower is tulips considering she wanted to travel all around to specifically see tulips.

This is Az tucking away the image (it remains) and then later coming back to his previous point as in ´´yup. that is a thing of secret lovely beauty´´

Not to mention, Gwyn is not even wearing the actual necklace in the image he can see proper. It's just her eyes lighting up. Whereas you can see the necklace and see its beauty when held to the light.

Luciens gift connect to Elain herself way more.

A) gloves. She wears gloves in acotar while gardening and looks most happy like that. Both grayson and az caused her to get hurt and the gloves (from her mate) are supposed to protect her from hurt. Without them she ironically got pricked all over her hand.

B) pearls. Just a few chapters before lucien gifted her that she wore pearls in her hair. Very much like the earings.

I like theories. I do. but do not ignore canon.

Some people say its because Elain is underestimated and thats why Azriel got it for her but Az himself canonically underestimate her.

Also don´t even try. Az underestimating Elain is the only proof SJM provided on to what Azriel was feeling while saying ´´There is a innate darkness in the dread trove that Elain should not be exposed to´´

Also Elain being underestimated and showing how she can do more than what people think of her does not naturally fall into the ´´secret beauty´´ category more so the secret strength category.

So I wrote this post about Lucien deserving Elain in a fit of anger. And now I'm back with more anger because guess what guys.

Elain ALSO deserves Lucien.

I see it all the time. "Lucien deserves someone who actually likes him." Followed by bashing Elain as if she is the worst person ever and doesn't deserve love.

Please stop pretending like you're making this argument because you care about Lucien. Lucien deserves his soulmate. He deserves to have that HEA with the one person who he has a soul to soul connection with. Don't throw side characters and randos at him that do not make sense at all to his narrative or how SJM had canonized how mating bonds work. Do you honestly think Lucien is going to care that some other female wants him???? Do you even get that Lucien can easily get any female in Prythian and has gotten many of them but none of them really mattered to him the way Elain matters to him.

Listen to his words. He tells everyone he's a mated male now for a reason. He is loyal to Elain regardless of whether she is showing him desire.

Elain is a GOOD person. Just like Lucien. She is kind and thoughtful. Careful and empathetic. Strong and resilient. Elain loves with her whole heart. She loved her father when no one else could see as worthy. Not even her sisters. She loved Graysen faithfully even if he was a scumbag who didn't deserve her devotion. So, I think Elain knows what it means to love, and she is not ready to give away her heart so fast again. Especially not to someone who can see all of her.

Yes, it's hard that she isn't ready to love Lucien yet. But girl has been THROUGH it. She has been struggling with a loss of her autonomy, her future, and her identity. And all of that with the pressure of a soulmate who is a stranger. None of you can say you'd handle it perfectly either.

And guess what. Lucien, my brave and soulful man, understands that. He is the only one who acknowledged when Elain was severely depressed in ACOWAR that she suffered a trauma. He is the only one that gives her space rather than pushing his opinions or desires of what he wants her to be onto her. He knows she isn't ready. And he's waiting. Giving her space but also being present enough so she knows he is there when she is ready to get to know him. That is all he has wanted.

Jumping to the assumption that Elain "doesn't even like him" is bold. You don't know Elain's thoughts. You don't know how she really feels about Lucien as a person. We have some inklings about what she thought about the bond right after her terrible breakup that she was still mourning. We know that before Lucien left on a dangerous mission, she took a half step as if to stop him. We know that she has shown genuine care over whether he's hurt. And we know that she feels the connection to him (I can hear your heart beating through the stone) and that is never going away. We know that Elain is affected by Lucien and it's not a leap to think that she feels as drawn to him as he is to her, she just has to be ready. And maybe Elain can tell Lucien is a good male who she doesn't want to inflict her messiness on just yet. Maybe she knows to jump in too fast wouldn't be fair to him either.

So many denigrate Elain and say she is boring, selfish, or mean all because she is struggling through a tough time in her life. And even in that struggle, she still maintains her kindness. She still searches for hope. She still wants to better herself. Which sounds a lot like that mate of hers. And when she is ready to fall in love again, she will get exactly the man that she deserves. Lucien Vanserra. Because Elain deserves the unconditional love that he has to offer. Finally someone will return it back to her.
