character wants vs needs

I’m sure everyone’s heard this before, but thank you for letting me blabber about this anyway.

I’ve had a lot of success (at least, I think) in setting up a characters’ wants vs needs right at the start of character creation. For me, it’s something I build alongside the backstory and main personality traits, so they all work in tandem. Together, these inform my character arc, then my plot (to ensure the plot is servicing the character arc).

And wants vs needs aren’t, like, they want some pretty earrings but need food. It’s more about what’s driving the character and how that aligns (or doesn’t) with their internal conflict.

I’ll give an example from Emry Karic in The Stray Spirit:

Emry wants to join the Auric Guild so he can prove to his family he’s not a disappointment/failure.

But is that really what Emry needs? Does he need to join the Guild to prove that? The answer is no: what he really needs to do is get over his fears and talk to his family, regardless of their perceived disappointment.

This shapes both the rest of his character and the entire narrative in so many ways! For example:

Given this want/need established above, does it make sense for Emry to be a casual, flirty bard without a care in the world? No! He needs to care deeply for this to work. He needs to love his family, he needs to have some anxiety, he needs to be earnest.

The want fuels where he starts. It even influences the specific city he starts in (far away from his family), how long he’s been away from his family (years), how this goal has impacted all of his relationships (like his relationship with Cal). 

The need fuels where he ends. It drives him to that reunion with his family that should (hopefully) be emotional & satisfying for the reader.

You can get into a chicken-and-egg sort of cycle here, but really, those wants and needs fuel everything. 

You probably get it by now, but for funsies, I’ll put an example from A Rival Most Vial under the cut, so this doesn’t get too long on your dash.

Let’s talk about my favorite blue-haired potion master from A Rival Most Vial: Ambrose Beake.

Ambrose Beake wants to be a little hermit in his successful potion shop. In this circumstance, he’s like Bilbo. He doesn’t want to go on the adventure, he doesn’t want to leave his home. He wants to defend his stasis.

But does Ambrose need that? Does he need to self-isolate, to be a grumpy little loser? No, he needs the change! He needs to learn how to open up to others, to acknowledge the community around him. To realize that others have been supporting him this whole damn time when all he’s done is push them away. Someone throw this man into a blender of emotions, stat!!

And this, naturally, impacts everything else:

His personality. Would a charming, open person have this problem? No! He must be a grump! He must be prickly and snobbish!

His backstory. What sort of upbringing would support this commitment to self-isolation? Answer: a terrible one, next question.

His relationships, obviously. He has one (1) friend to demonstrate what he is under the surface. But to everyone else, he’s a “get off my lawn” sort of man.

Everything about his rival Eli! What’s the best foil to Ambrose in this scenario? Well, a man who’s charming and open. A man who has healthy relationships, who knows how to communicate, who wants to help others. 

And of course, this can work in the opposite direction.

If you only have a backstory: how does that backstory shape a character’s personality and goals? Do they want revenge? Do they want to forget? Do they want to fulfill or reject a duty?

If you only have a personality: what does the personality imply (or mask) about their past? Then, once you get a sense of where they came from, where are they going and why?

Examples, because I like typing:

I only have a backstory, eg- a kid raised to be an assassin.

Okay, cool! Pick your flavor of assassin. Smooth and hyper-competent, due to years of training? Resentful and callous, due to a horrible childhood environment? 

Let’s say they’re resentful. If they’re resentful, what keeps them in that career? Do they want to stay or go? Do they need to stay or go?

I only have a personality, eg- a bubbly chef.

Great! Why is the chef bubbly? Is she a fresh face, new to the career or the scene? Or is she keeping outward appearances to make friends or keep someone’s spirits up?

Let’s say this chef is bubbly because she’s keeping up outward appearances, and masking some sort of present or past conflict. Is it financial trouble? Relationship trouble? A difficult career? Does she want to resolve those troubles? Does she need to hide them?

I think you get where I’m going here. I hope this helps a little if you’re looking to build a new character or struggling to nail down an existing one!

Been thinking about this for a good while, but I was thinking of writing out my own horror + romance kind of thing at some point but I don’t got any programming skills or any of that jazz, so I’ll just have to stick with writing 💔

Basically, I have some characters, Lucas Buford being the main love interest. More about him:

He is a half-vampire, his father left before he was born and his mother raised him all on her own. Due to the time period they lived in she was berated by the people around her and Lucas couldn’t make any friends so it left them both in isolation, but for Lucas at the time, it was okay because all he needed was his mother. Then her unfortunate passing came and Lucas would become a hermit, he was depressed and lonely, and it stuck that way for a century, until current date, he had met a trans man called Eli.

After Eli ended up storming out of his home due to a family issues, he soon came across Lucas who was having a depressive episode, disassociated at the time as he was sitting on a cut-down tree in the middle of the woods. Eli plopped down next to him, greeted him with a simple, “Hey, you down too?” And after days of Eli coming to pester and talk to him, the two eventually bonded and became friends.

Lucas ended up growing very attached and Eli got his new best buddy. Lucas got to learn what was happening with the modern world, educated on just about everything, and soon came to realize he was bi. Soon Eli moved out of his parents house and became roommates with his older brother after they patched things up, and Lucas was dragged into living with them too since Lucas’s old childhood home was deemed unlivable by Eli. And after that Lucas started attending college with Eli, and due to him being pretty fuckin’ smart and being able to pick up things easily, he ended up being Eli’s tutor.

And that’s the story so far, as how he met the MC (or you in this case) would probably be through college. But I’ll work on it more, but I did have a plot in mind initially that I’ll also post (warning it’s older writing and I’m just copying and pasting from a discord chat.):

So, I’ve had this idea now… I kinda really wanna do make my own Yandere man game at some point, getting hella inspired, so here’s something.

You were packing to leave your old dad’s house, (you can choose whether you’re adopted or not) and he comes in and says, “You don’t really have to go, you could always stay with your old man!”

After a heart-felt goodbye you leave to enter a new city, you’ve got roommates. You already got a job, you’re going to college, etc. and well, even after everything seems ‘perfect’, it’s really not. Somebody’s become obsessed, and they’re watching your every move. You are not alone.

Fate is uncertain.

Now more about the dad, so he is your very supportive father that has raised you since you were a wee lad, he has been a good influence. So, cool and laidback, takes you out fishing, endorses your hobbies, when you get too stressed he’ll do what he can to help, a very accepting father, overall just a good father figure, made to be a likable dad. He’s also pretty tech savvy.

@prismartist / prismartist eli my beloved. oh, do i have to say something else? fantastic writer and so underrated so please check them out pretty please (threat) Recommending the To Break Bread series for your double life soulmate feels and the love language of food, speak now, or forever hold your peace for your moon big feels, and now i'm sure that it's true for any desert duoers who wanna get broken. prism is also very good at "unconventional" fic with stuff like poetry, script-fics, etc.

@chrysalizzm / chrysalizzm chrys's prose is so beautiful that whenever i read it im like how i am qualified to talk to you sfljsdlfjslf. seriously beautiful, beautiful work. Chrys mostly writes DSMP but has fantastic expanded universes and worldbuilding that isn't strictly limited to just those characters so you'll find a few hermits scattered about, even if it's focused primairly on dsmp.

Last year I rediscovered Tumblr and then I was on a roll, then I fell off! I’m not entirely sure how that happened but I’m back and I have a lot to say!

I’m not even sure where to start so here’s a 2023 recap;

January was calm from what I can recollect, I was still getting my autonomy back and the 31st of that month marked the one year anniversary since my accident and I’m not sure if I mentioned this but I also got a car a few days before my year anniversary which was very special to me to have been able to come full circle like that. Romantically, I didn’t have anything going on. I was going dates to fill the time but nothing serious ever evolved from any of it.

February brings me to my first trip of the year and the first time I had been able to use my flight benefits. Ashley and I took a day trip to New York and came home and drove to Miami for a day, it was quick but fun! Since I was mobile in more way than one now, I was getting back to my “old” self again. Getting dressed, hanging out with my friends.

March was nothing to write home about either. I had training for a new position at work and spent a lot of time with my niece. I can’t recall anything major happening this month either if I’m being honest. I can remember emotionally feeling a little sad because I was feeling disconnected from the world. I had gotten a little busy with work and I was becoming a little bit of a hermit crab again.

April is when the year started to pick up a little speed for me. Adel and I took a trip to Puerto Rico, it was the first time for the both of us. We had so much fun we ended up extending for another day. During this time I started to get a little into fitness and I was shedding my little hermit crab shell again. Maybe it was the braids, the tan and the warm weather, but life was feeling like life again.

May started with a bang! I went on a cruise with like 12 other family members and we had a blast. It was short but we still enjoyed ourselves. The whole month was actually pretty eventful. Allie’s surprise 30th party was that month and I also got to see Bryson Tiller live with Zamira. We sang and cried our little hearts out. Eli’s birthday is also in May so we celebrated her too. As you can see, we are well into the year and we are still batting zero in romance department, but we keep living.

June may still go down as my favorite month of the year. As soon as the month started I went to Miami with Cindy and Eli to go see Kathy before she popped out her new baby but you know we still turned it into a trip while we were out there. The week after I got back I went to Chicago with Gabby and some of the girls for her Bachelorette Trip. It wasn’t my first time in Chicago but it was the first time I spent real time there and I really enjoyed myself. When I got back from Chicago, I went to the Sorry Papi Tour with Eli and Cindy! I also had training for what would be my second promotion of the year. We also found out the gender of my brother’s newest baby, it was a boy!

July I tried to sit my ass down but I think I still had June ants in my pants. I spent 4th of July with Liz and Amanda and the kids which I love to do. I flew to Texas a few days later to spend Adel’s birthday with her. Such a cute little trip. I was trying to get back into rest mode this moth so I didn’t pop out too much after that. I remember going downtown one hot ass night with Amanda and Liz and then just spending the rest of the month in my pool trying not to die of heatstroke. I also made one year with my job, which came pretty quickly.

August is when life started to get a little interesting I think lol. This month I was feeling overwhelmed with my living situation and in that same swoop someone I know needed a dog-sitter for a few days so I packed my shit and was a dog mom for like 4 days. I won’t get into too many details but long story short, that was the last time I ever saw that person because they lied about their flight being canceled so they could stay an extra day knowing their dog was sick and I was ready to go home. That weekend was also the weekend we celebrated my Grammy’s 65th birthday. This weekend, I also started going back and forth with a handsome man that I had always been interested in back it just never seemed to happen. Before the month was over, we had hung out a few times and if I am being honest, I was feeling pretty optimistic. I blame my Sagittarius Venus for that.

September rolls around and we celebrate my godson Zavier, my niece Amaia also turned 2 this month. Not to mention, my little sister turned 18 on us! All the while, things with this handsome man seem to be working in my favor. We are spending a good amount of time together, I’m getting to know him more and I am liking what I’m seeing. At this point, the only things I’ve been up to is working, working out, spending time with my family and seeing him when I could. I think it’s important to note that neither one of us had really said anything about how we felt about the other. Everything was more of a “use your context clues” kinda vibe for a little. I also didn’t want to get ahead of myself so I was just going with the flow.

October is finally here! This is my birthday month so I knew the vibes were gonna be 1000. We kicked off the month celebrating my cousin Jazmin. We had a cousin’s night out and we had a blast. The next week was Gabby’s wedding so I traveled to the Dominican Republic for the first time. The wedding was beautiful and I cried my eyes out pretty much the whole weekend. Plus, I was the ONLY single person there. Don’t tell me I’m not one of God’s strongest soldiers because my lord lol. In between this, I am still seeing the handsome man but at this rate I have developed feelings for him and I don’t know what to do with them. So naturally, I decided to do nothing and bury them. But we were still hanging out so that was getting hard. My birthday rolls around but this year I wanted to spend it solo. So a few days before I went to dinner with some of my best friends and on the day of I just hung out with my brothers.

November hits and I’m literally catching a flight on the 1st. For my solo trip, I went to Sacramento to see my favorite artist Victoria Monet. It was an AMAZING show, I am so happy I went. While I was out there I think there was one day that I literally didn’t even speak. It was so peaceful. But it gave me time to think about some things and I felt like I was getting in over my head with the handsome man so I started to subconsciously pull back a little. When I came back from my trip, I saw him for what I didn’t know then would be the last time for 4 months. But looking back, that last time felt different. Something felt off. On the bright side, I did have training for another promotion, that makes 3 for the year. I also got to take my brother to see the Magic play at an in-season play-off game which was dope. The best thing that happened this month was rekindling my friendship with Eyad. We ran into one night out and decided to make a pact to hang out once a week and we’ve been sticking to it! He’s legitimately become one of my best friends.

December marks the end of this relatively smooth year. Christmas is my favorite holiday so the vibes were up. I hadn’t really spoken to the handsome man because I was trying to swallow those feelings I had for him. Then one day, he asks me if I listen to Christmas music and sends me a playlist. That playlist sends me into a frenzy and I can’t think straight for like 2 days. If you know me, you know how much I love music and thoughtful gifts so the me a playlist is the perfect depiction of that. It might not hold that kinda weight for everyone, and it’s probably silly, but no one has ever made me a playlist before so I was geekin’. That drove me to finally tell him how I feel about him, sort of. I told him that I like him but there’s so much more I wanted to say. He told me he liked me too but, at this point what his but was doesn’t matter because having a “but” in the first place just puts a stop to everything. What I will say is that his “but” was enough for him to just decide I need to fall back. With the tale as old as time, as I pulled away, I could feel his energy more. I tried doing on dates to distract myself but it didn’t work. The only thing that worked was time.

Fast forward to April 2024, so far I have gone on two trips and both have been with Adel. We went to New York and we just back came back from Atlanta. So far, I am on promotion number one of the year and in July I will make 2 years with my job. I have seen the handsome man again and he has sent me yet another playlist. Do I still have feelings for him? I think so, but I can’t keep driving myself crazy wondering, I have to keep on living and remember that what’s for me, will always be for me. If you made it this far, thank you for your time. This felt really good for me to release.

Some beloved Hermitcraft-adjacent players!

The Hermits have been along a long, long time. On Minecraft and YouTube both. some of the notable people who are often referenced within either the fandom or the videos themselves-

Jono Smithers- Rendog’s actual brother! He produces music for a lot of the Hermits.

Sean Hills- Joe Hills’ brother! Joe writes songs and commissions Sean to sing them. 

Skizzman- if you’re new to Hermitcraft, you might not have heard yet about Team ZIT! Zedaph, Impulse, and Tango. but there’s ALSO Team ZITS, this variation including Skizzman! Skizz is a good friend of their’s and has played in many non-hc events/games such as among us lobbies and 3rd life smp.

Elybeatmaker- oh, whats this? the Hermits say something that VAGUELY rhym? oh god oh fuck boy . Ely’s the remix master of the fandom and has made some gems such as Do You Even Bust, His Response, the wonderous series of Grian songs, Resource Gathering, and Hermitgang Remix.

The Hermitcraft Recap guys- thank you for not letting us go simply insane having over twenty pov to watch. The fan-ran recap series writers are the backbone to Hermitblr having any sanity!

Hbomb94- H mama ! the personal hype squad to the Hermits. There probably isn’t a single mcyt group out there H isn’t adjacent to.

CaptainPuffy- Relatively recent to be added to this list, but having joined not only Vault Hunters but been teamed with Hermits before, it felt rude to ignore her!

PeteZahHutt- another lovely member to any Hermit MCC team! a Vault Hunter and one of the first choices Grian has for a teammate.

Solidaritygaming- a long-term friend of Grian! Was a member of Evo SMP, 3rd Life smp, and fairly common to be seen in the Hermit MCC teams.

InTheLittleWoods- Similarly he’s a long-term friend of Grian’s, and having made fast-friends with Ren! A part of Evo SMP and 3rd Life SMP. Also commonly paired with Hermit MCC teams!

Domrao- a bit of a different case, as he’s not one who actively streams and doesn’t post videos, Dom’s an important part of a lot of Grian’s videos such as tutorials, showcases, and old minigame videos! Dom’s even whitelisted on Hermitcraft s7 and acts as a body-double for cinematic shots! Small circles of older Grian fans would kill for this man and rightfully so.

Taurtis- Similarly to Dom, Taurtis has been a backbone to a lot of Grian’s content in the past! Part of Evo SMP, and the most active challenger in Grian’s old series, Buildswap (of which Domrao was a judge for..all of the series)it’s hard to ignore Taurtis’ impact on the Hermitcraft fandom.

What if demons like, roamed in packs. Eery time we see any higher ranking demons they’ve always been in groups or are implied to be part of a group that’s just temporarily split up or they just moved off on their own for whatever reason like Galand did when he was first introduced. Ten Commandments and the Black Knights being examples. What if it was some sort of pack instinct and maybe that’s part of why Meliodas also keeps a group of friends around him and is so close to the Sins. They’re his pack!

YESSS, I love it!!!

I've been thinking about this for a while actually, that even if the individual demons don't particularly like each other, they'll still stay close to one another, because it's their instinct!

And the underworld is a dangerous place. Demons have not just Indura to fear, but other monsters as well, so staying in a group was way safer than just being on your own.

We know that demons live in villages or cities, and even though they're not the most social and like their own space (as seen by galand commenting that humans live closer together like insects), theh still live together in groups. The TC are the elite warriors, so the average demon would have trouble defending themselves, but as a group they're a force to be reckoned with.

Hermit demons are practically non-existent. They get antsy when completely alone. Mel only had Eli to keep him company for 3000 years and she regularly looses her memories, so he probably had to swallow a lot of anxiety when he had yet to meet her in her next life. And even if he had human friends, they die quickly in comparison to him.

And even when he met the sins for the first time, he had to make up rules for them to follow to get along. And while they all cherished him and he cherished them, he still couldn’t be completely honest with them about him being a demon. So while he was glad he finally found people that wouldn’t die in 80 years, there was still a divide between them and him. It must’ve been such a relief for him when they found out he was a demon and accepted him still, though it must’ve hurt when King was a little hostile towards him and expressed that in the training cave in Istal.

But after breaking the curses and everything, Meliodas definitely becomes more clingly. Him and Ban are already comfortable with each other, but there are times when Mel will just nap on him even though he could just nap in his bed. Mel also definitely will see King floating in the air and jump to cling to the fairy with his entire body. King is surprised as hell but when Mel snuggles against him with the cutest face ever, he’ll get Chastifol and lie down with Mel and nap. He’ll bask in the sun on the roof with Diane and listen to her gushing abt King, and she’ll ask tons of questions about Elizabeth (how she used to be and the like). They definitely collaborate for a birthday surprise for Eli.

And when it’s a quiet day in the Boar Hat, 99% of the time, Mel can be found either with Elizabeth or one of the other sins, either making physical contact somehow (like how cats will lie on or against you) or near them doing his own thing.

Jrum glared over at Vee. She was currently sitting in a corner alone and not bothering anyone, but he knew that was only going to last so long. After explaining the issue, Stress had been the first to arrive and help carry Vee, mainly since she seemed like the least threatening non-hybrid. When joining back with the others, Jrum and Ren gave a summary of what happened and then the hermits made a plan on what to do next. A plan Jrum wasn’t a fan of.

Reluctantly, Jrum approached Vee. As he got closer, he could vaguely hear the music coming from the headphones she was currently wearing. Well, that and she was also humming along. So when Jrum tried to get her attention, Vee didn’t respond until Jrum tapped her shoulder, making her jump. “Oh! S-sorry. Did you need something?”

Jrum didn’t respond right away, looking back at the hermits and glaring at them. Vee also looked at them too before Jrum looked at her and sighed. “What… were you listening to?”

Vee immediately lit up at the question. “Oh! So my dad really really likes music ‘n stuff so some of his friends are the same. One of them even does some music stuff of his own. It’s a little weird sometimes because he’s done work with my dad’s ex, but they’re kinda a celebrity, so it makes sense too. And dad chooses all my songs, so I’m sure he’s fine with it since they’re on here. Oh! Speaking of my dad, he also gave me these headphones! Technically I have my own since, you know, Listener stuff, but those don’t let me listen to fun songs! I always prefer stuff like Pancake Robot and not the secrets of the world or whatever. It’s weird.”

Jrum was left reeling from all the information Vee was giving him, but when his mind finally caught up enough to realize she had mentioned Listeners, Jrum tried to steer the topic that way. “So, Listeners? You said your dad is one, but I’m still not really sure what those are.”

“Oh yeah!” Vee replied excitedly, giving Jrum a second to brace himself for the incoming barrage. “So Listeners are like the opposite but also mirror and also pair for Watchers. Every Watcher is paired with a Listener and vice versa. Then each pair is assigned to a world. Sometimes more than one pair is assigned to a world, like this place for example! There’s two pairs here!”

“And I guess one of those is my dad and yours?” Jrum asked before clarifying. “You said they were a pair before.”

“Yeah, they’re a pair.” Vee started to agree, but then continued with a correction. “But they’re a pair for a world called Wynncraft, not here. The two Listeners are Lyarrah and Ely and then the Watchers are… Zloy and Pixel I think. I don’t see those two as often.”

“What else do you know about Listeners then?”

“Well they can use magic.” Vee answered, making her hand glow green for a second while waving it in their air. “Papa’s still training me an’ Astrid, so I’m not really really good at it or anything. You might be better than me.”

Jrum crossed his arms, not confirming or denying. “Alright, but I was hoping to know about fully trained Listeners.”

“Oh okay! Right! Well… I know that they normally have a little more of a hands off approach compared to Watchers. Because of the half of the source we’re drawing from, our magic is green and not purple like Watchers.”

“Source? What source?” Jrum asked, which actually managed to make Vee pause and not say anything for a few minutes. “Are you okay?”

“How do you not know about the sources?!” Vee asked, grabbing Jrum by the shoulders and shaking him. “Each dimension has its own source which fuels the magic belonging to it. Sure, the magic can be influenced a bit by the person using it, but usually color depends on the source. Sorta like when Papa sets up a fireplace, it’s orangey, but then he’s got some special pinecones that make it blue ‘n green!”

“You’re getting off topic.” Jrum spoke up, making Vee look at him and put her hands on her hips.

“Well, it’s not my fault that you didn’t pay attention to the basics!”

“What are you talking about?” Jrum asked, feeling a bit frustrated. “About magic? Why would I know anything about that?!”

“Not know any- What have you been doing the past year?!” And Vee grabbed Jrum by the shoulders again, shaking him more violently than before that Jrum was actually worried about being shaken apart.

“Uh, mainly existing!” Jrum replied as he managed to shove Vee away and take a few steps away. “More specific is that I like to sell stuff and do redstone?”

“You’re using magic for that?”

“I don’t know any magic!”

“You’ve had magic for a year and you don’t know how to use it?!”

“I’ve only existed for a year!” Jrum finished the argument, shouting as loudly as he could, which rattled the room. “I’m a robot! I was built a year ago as a shop and given a body a bunch of months later. My dad’s the one with magic, not me!” But then Jrum paused, thinking it over. When they had been dealing with Theseus and Nightmare and Grifter, a lot of things had happened, some of which did imply that he and Grum both had magic of some sort. “And if I do, I guess you’re right and I don’t know how to use it.”

Vee was quiet, apparently not knowing how to respond. Jrum looked at her, but she just looked away and started chewing on her thumbnail. “Um… I’m sorry. I didn’t know…”

“I know you didn’t. You haven’t been around.” Jrum said, not feeling as angry at Vee as he had recently. “I just thought since you knew Grifter and all.”

“Well, my dad knows him more. He was sort of the first Listener my dad became friends with.”

With that comment, Jrum’s interest was piqued. “Really? Can you tell me more?”

That brought a little bit more of a smile to Vee’s face. “Yeah. See, Grifter was a Listener before my dad. He’s also the hels copy of your dad, who’s my dad’s partner.” Jrum raised a finger to interject, but Vee shushed him. “I’ll get to that! Because of that, they kinda became friends and so I’ve seen Grifter a number of times and he’s kinda like an uncle along with Perfect Sense. I don’t really see that guy much, and Grifter doesn’t stay around much himself, oh! But last time he helped braid my hair, see?” And she showed off her nicely braided pink hair that had a few black feathers decorating it. “He said he killed some birds for me for these!”

“Right…” Jrum weakly agreed, knowing that definitely wasn’t the case.

“I know he wasn’t around for a while for some reason for like two years, before Papa let me learn to use magic. But he did manage to send lots of messages to Flora!”

“And who exactly is Flora?” Jrum asked, recognizing the name from Vee’s call earlier.

“Well, I kinda have a sister named Astrid. She’s adopted like me. And Flora is her girlfriend. You’re not allowed to call her Flora though. Only people she gives permission to, so you have to call her Fleur!”

“Right. And you said her uncle was Grifter?” Jrum asked, double checking what he heard earlier.

“Yeah!” Vee agreed. “Her dad is Wile, who’s one of Grifter’s brothers! The others are Theseus and Euro. And then Wile is married to Sadie who’s Flora’s mom. Oh and Grifter has two kids named-”

“I know. We’ve met.” Jrum replied, not hiding the saltiness of his tone. “I’m not the happiest with one of them.” Jrum then shook his head. “Now, two questions. One, are you going to clarify the partner thing?”

“Oh! Yes! Okay, so there’s sorta like two main dimensions known commonly as Wels and Hels over time. There’s other names, but those rhyme and are short so ye! A lot of stuff gets balanced between them, one of which being Watchers and Listeners. While not every Watcher is Wels and not every Listener is Hels - like my dad actually - they still get paired up cause the sources originate from the different main dimensions sub dimensions!”

“...What?” Jrum asked, not understanding the last bit.

“Uh, do you want me to just maybe teach you what I know about magic?” Vee asked, and Jrum nodded.

“That was actually going to be part of my second question. The other part of it was that since we have some magic users here, they might be able to help out.”

Vee lit up at that. “Oh! That’s a great idea! Let’s go!” and Vee grabbed Jrum’s hand before rushing back towards the hermits.

As they moved, Jrum quickly sent a message to warn the hermits that she was on her way, but then he went to planning. When everything had happened, it was clear that Scar and Hoodie as well as his dad had been involved with their magic, then based on what happened after, it seemed Grifter was involved too. If Vee helped them, intentionally or not, they could figure out what exactly happened to Grian, and possibly also learn how to reverse it.

Xannes jumped when he felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned quickly, hands crackling with electricity before actually realizing who was there, that being his brother as well as Philza. “Don’t sneak up on me like that. Especially when I’m so close to… this.”

EX gestured towards a warning covering for a hole to the void. As opposed to Xisuma and Mumbo who found themselves in their own bases, Xannes didn’t have one and instead found himself a replica of Zedaph’s base.

The other two paused to look at the void hole as Xannes backed away. “Didn’t know what was going on, so before you showed up, I wondered if that was connected. Might have been me that this was for and all.”

That comment made Xisuma take another look at the void hole, his helmet hiding any expression he was giving. At the same time, Phil walked away from it and over to Xannes. “Well, doesn’t look like you are. We’re rounding people up, so whoever we can’t find must be dealing with all this.”

“And if we do find everyone?” EX asked, which made Phil shrug.

“Then we figure it out from there. It’s already narrowed down by who’s dealt with all this already.”

“Assuming that last thing really was meant for you and your brother at the same time.”

“Who knows, maybe it’ll happen for you and Xisuma too?” Phil suggested, which got EX to roll his eyes.

“Oh sure, why? Just because we’re related? It would have happened to your kids as well if that were the case.” And then Xannes grabbed some elytra set up on an armor stand and put it on. “Let’s just find everyone else and finish this all up.”

The other two followed EX along in the sky over to the next base, which Xisuma recognized as TFC’s base. Knowing TFC and his base, Xisuma explained they had three areas to check out, the strip mine at the bottom, the sorting system up top, and the main base on the ground itself. Xannes was the one to take the main floor since Xisuma knew the way down to the strip mine and Philza could easily fly up to the storage above. And of course, that’s where Paul was, making Xannes immediately roll his eyes and walk away, not wanting any sort of argument with the survivalist.

Unfortunately, Paul jogged to catch up to him. “Hey, slow down. Is it just you here?”

“Why? Because then it’s just so strange you find me first. Or if not, then it’s so worrying that you chose to look where I am.”

Paul stopped following at that. “I really meant it before. It wasn’t just me trying to get us through everything.”

“Sure you weren’t.” Xannes spat at Paul, making the survivor put his hands up defensively.

“I’m actually sorry. I shouldn’t let what happened there be the only time I confront it. I have trouble trusting people. So I didn’t trust you. I didn’t trust my brother or some of his kids either. Part of the reason I didn’t stick with the Hermits when they invited me to join is because I have trouble trusting them too. The person I see most often outside of my family and Hoodie is Bub, and he always tries to eat my brains.”

“Get some better friends then.”

“What I’m trying to say is I’m used to going it alone and easily wary. I shouldn’t have taken it out on you.”

Xannes was quiet for a bit before shrugging. “Fine, but let’s just say you owe me or something. We’ll get it in writing later. My brother and yours are both looking around the other pieces of this base for you.”

“There’s more to this place? Huh, it already seemed pretty big.”

“It looks like everything is pretty big right now. You got an elytra?”

“Not really.”

“Well that’s just great.”

Tommy tried blocking everything out. Closing his eyes, he could pretend that he wasn’t stuck back in exile all alone. Technically, Tommy knew that was the worst thing to be doing right now, but he wasn’t really in the mood for caring. The only way he was escaping from exile or whatever round of nightmares they were on is if someone showed up. Well, if someone real showed up.

In addition to being trapped in exile, Tommy was seeing things, mainly of people. Hallucinations of people from both the smp and Hermitcraft kept showing up, usually claiming he belonged there. Tommy wanted to just get rid of them, but at the same time, he was worried that some of them might be real. Like it had been with Jack.

Anyone who wasn’t on the trip here was obviously fake. Tubbo, Ranboo, Grian, Fundy …Dream. Plus Ghostbur himself kept showing up, and Tommy was fifty percent sure that wasn’t real since Wilbur had been obviously revived. Based on right now though, he wasn’t sure.

“Please Tommy I am going to cry. You are in the lava.”

“Fuck off Ghostbur, I’m not in lava.”

“But you are.” The fake insisted and tried grabbing Tommy, only to have their arms go through the teen. “Please I just want to help you.”

“Just go the fuck away!” Tommy swatted at the hallucination. “I don’t want you here mocking me, I just want to get out of here!”

“Then just climb out, it’s not hard.”

“Shut up!” And Tommy waved his arms through Ghostbur until he dissolved into nothing, the image finally disappearing.

“It took you long enough to get rid of him.” A new voice spoke. It wasn’t one that Tommy could immediately rule out as fake, but the fact that the tone didn’t match the person made the teen assume it wasn’t real. “Oh don’t worry. I’m just here to check that everything is all in order around here. I’m not seeing much shelter other than your tent, so that’s fine. You’re looking a little hungry, so I should be able to spare you some food, as long as you still don’t have any gear.”

Hearing everything that was said, Tommy was sure it wasn’t real. The tone… the inflection everything was said with as well as what exactly was said all matched Dream to a tee, but the voice’s owner wouldn’t… probably wouldn’t ever say it for real. Probably. But even knowing that, Tommy couldn’t help but worry it was real as he looked over at Xisuma, the hermit admin observing the conditions of exile and Tommy himself to make sure it was all up to his standards, whatever those were.

“Can’t I just go back to my base?” Tommy asked, at this point feeling done enough with the whole situation to talk back a little, which he immediately regretted.

“Tommy, that place doesn’t belong to you. With Grian gone, no one wants you around anymore so of course the other hermits were all too glad to have more space to build with how big everything is.” And as that was said, it almost seemed like the bases in the distance got larger and made the island Tommy was stuck in seem smaller. “We made an exception before because you were still a kid and hurt, but now that we know what you’re like? If you really want to say you’re a man, act like one and suck it up.”

For a little bit, Tommy was quiet, only giving the quietest thank you he could manage as the probably fake Xisuma gave him a beetroot. Because of course the hermits farmed everything they could, including the worst vegetable ever just to feed Tommy. After eating, Tommy gained enough confidence to say something more, but Xisuma was gone, in his place was Ghostbur again. “Fine, better than Xisuma sticking around.”

“Xisuma? Is he nearby?” Ghostbur asked, looking around. “Is that why everything moved? Oh, that’s right, Tommy are you okay after that everything moving?”

“You’re not making any fucking sense. Maybe I actually want Xisuma back.”

“Well maybe if you climb out of that pit, you can come along?”

That confused Tommy a bit more, but also intrigued him. “Come along where? Do you know a way off this place?”

“Um, I don’t. Everything’s really jumbled up. I know there was a bunch of giant animals, and now there’s only really part of a house.”

“With a pit next to it? And the house is made of dark oak?” Tommy asked, jumping up and pretty sure he knew what Ghostbur was talking about.”

“Yeah… it’s right…” But before Ghostbur could say more, he was gone again, leaving Tommy to try and get him to come back, eventually sitting on the ground next to where the ghost had been and digging at the dirt as if the ghost had fallen into the ground and hoping to dig him up just so Tommy wasn’t alone again.

Living in a castle was a wonderful change of pace from all the random buildings that had been strewn about before from the old civilization. At least, Aven was pretty sure it was a nice change. It did come with actual residents, like the bird person named Grifter that seemed to replace Nightmare and the two miniature golems that also appeared. And the fox person that Aven never remembered the name of because it was always changing, but knew was Wile’s kid. Plus they seemed to like the mini yellow version of Nightmare.

And now more recently there were a few more people, like the person that liked the bird person and had glowing red eyes, and also two more bird people, though one Aven was pretty sure was related to Toob somehow and the other looked enough like Grifter that they kept calling them that as well.

Now all that was already pretty hard to keep track of, but now there was yet another person who was new in the castle, them being yet another bird person. Well, at the very least everyone was easy to keep track of since their wings were all different colors.

“Oh, hello there.” Aven was surprised that this bird person was looking at them and talking to them. “Who are you supposed to be?”

“Oh, my name is Aven. You look like another Grifter.” Aven’s voice echoed, not having a physical form to make it sound clear.

“I suppose that’s true.” The new person spoke. “I hope this isn’t too insensitive, but can I ask where your body is?”

“Oh, I believe it was destroyed.” Aven answered easily. “That was part of the punishment.”

That seemed to interest the third Grifter. “Oh? Punishment for what?”

“Well, I know it involved Cerus. And also The Warrior. But other than that, I’m not sure. It’s okay though. I’m used to being dead.”

“Right, well, I don’t suppose you know a way to talk with this warrior person, do you?”

Aven paused to think it over. “I remember something about birds. There was this one bird he really liked.” Aven went quiet, thinking it over more, but then eventually their train of thought went off track and they realized something else. “Oh, I’m still thinking of you as Grifter three. What’s your name? I might remember it. Maybe.”

“Well, I suppose you can just call me Spore.”

“Alright. I think I might remember that. Oh, have you-” But before Aven could say more, Grifter three turned around. “Oh are you leaving?”

“Yes, those two uncorruptibles are probably still looking for Grian. So I should take him back before someone more powerful gets involved.”

“Alright then, have fun.” Aven replied, waving Grifter three off and then walking away on their own, only pausing for a moment to wonder what a Greean was.

Ray Hijacks the Team ZIT Ghostbuster AU Again

So @shadeswift99 made a few posts a while ago about a Team ZIT(S) ghostbuster AU, And then I may or may not have hijacked the post to add in ideas for most of the other hermits because why not.

Now, back then I was spitballing ideas and making them up on the spot, which is admittedly my usual writing process, but hey.

That said, I've had more time to think about it, and then last night I blacked out for a few hours and came to with a Google Doc filled with short bios for all of the hermits and a handful of hermit-adjacents. Now, this rapidly turned into an urban fantasy AU in my hands, but hey. It's fun.

This is in alphabetical order, with alternate personas (EX, Helsknight, Beetlejhost) beneath their original counterparts when applicable:

Bdubs

Lives in an old mansion in the woods alongside Doc for reasons known only to them. Bdubs works as an interior designer, with a side gig as a freelance hairdresser. His eyes are unnaturally large, similar to Keralis’, and he is at least partially a plant. Completely feral and frequently gets in trouble for having knives on him at all times. He and Cleo have a thing called Knife Club which makes everyone else nervous. Nobody messes with Knife Club. It’s not worth it. Sunbathes frequently.

Beef

Is a perfectly normal human being. He works as a butcher with a side gig as a graphic designer specializing in album covers and spends his free time playing pokemon and dragging Etho along to social events. He was the first person to spot the cryptid, and the first person who Etho approached of his own accord.

Biffa

Is a ghost possessing a robotic shell. Biffa is from the future. While initially his main goal was to get back home to his own time, Biffa has since made friends and settled down into a new life running a cafe specializing in a wide range of teas. He’s quite content with this, and has actually found himself far happier than he was in his own time. While his nature means he can see, hear and touch ghosts, his body was built specifically for a disembodied soul to be in the driver’s seat, and he doesn’t want to risk another taking control. Also, he has more important things to do than have fistfights with ghosts.

Cleo

Is a ghost possessing her own dead corpse. Her nature allows her to see, hear and touch ghosts. Can and will fistfight spirits. She works as a teacher, so she’s usually busy, but occasionally in really nasty situations the Beetlejhost will drag her in to break a ghost’s legs. Does sculpture in her free time, and is actually really good. The only one who can wrangle Beetle to any real capacity, and she’s learned to keep him on a fairly short leash. Housemates with Joe, and Keralis also pops in pretty frequently. Has Knife Club with Bdubs. Has an enchanted flower crown that prevents her from decaying further; a gift from Beetle. Recently started learning magic in the form of necromancy and illusions. Has an ongoing ‘feud’ with Zloy, in which she temporarily traps his soul in random inanimate objects every now and then.

Cub

A bit of a ‘mad scientist’ archetype, Cub’s experiments are not exactly the most ethical, though they’re at least more professional than Doc’s. Responsible for the creation of Jevin. Cub gets possessed stupidly easily- sometimes willingly- and can usually handle it himself but sometimes has to call for help. Has a magical method of communication with Scar for exactly this reason. Has a day job as co-owner of a business called ConCorp, which he started with Scar. Has probably broken the Geneva Convention.

Doc

Was presumably human at one point. Now an abomination. Repeated experiments on himself have resulted in a massively changed facial and foot structure, a body covered in mottled green scales, claws, and goat horns. He lost half his face in one of his experiments, and constructed a new cybernetic one. He lost his right arm fighting God. Killed said god and would do it again. Lives in a mansion in the woods with Bdubs, though nobody’s really sure why. Owns a casino because of course he does. Also a living crime against fashion, because the man refuses to wear anything other than his tattered lab coat, torn jeans, and crocs.

Ely

Runs the local radio station. Nobody’s ever seen him in person, and nobody knows where he gets people’s voice clips for his remixes. Probably a cryptid. Maybe a ghost. Seems pretty chill, despite the blatant invasions of privacy.

Etho

Is a cryptid. Lives out in the woods in an abomination that can barely be called a house. Has never been seen in anything other than full Kakashi cosplay. Tends to keep to himself, but occasionally lets Beef drag him along to social events, often with Doc and Bdubs. Nobody really knows what his deal is. Probably not human. Probably.

False

Used to be part of an illegal underground cage fighting ring, until she earned enough to buy her way out. Having grown up in said ring, she struggles to adjust to normal life, but living in a town where the barista is a robot and the local tailor has wings makes it easier. She now has a job as security at Doc’s casino, alongside Iskall.

Grian

Is either an angel or a demigod, but nobody knows which. Has wings. Is both a tailor and an architect. A complete gremlin who has elaborate masks of various birds and will wear them to commit crimes. Eats seeds. Messes with everyone else’s plants. Lives in Jungle Wood Flats. Volunteers at the local theatre.

Hypno

Has three eyes, but hides the third one under a bandanna at all times. Can see ghosts with it. Had problems with sections of plumbing randomly getting clogged and also making very weird noises, and eventually called Team ZIT when the plumbers couldn’t find the source. Was prepared for ghosts, but wound up with a slime creature instead. Works in a $2 store for some reason.

Impulse

Is fully human. The most sensible member of Team ZIT (which admittedly isn’t saying much), Impulse has a day job as a freelancer building custom PCs and fixing broken tech. Agreed to the whole ghostbusting deal because he was bored, mostly. Was the first one to meet Skizz face-to-face, and is the one to own that particular place outright. Gets possessed every now and then, usually by larger spirits. Used to run solely on caffeine and chronic anxiety until Zedaph started getting on his case about his sleep schedule. Now he runs on less caffeine, more sleep, and the same amount of chronic anxiety.

Iskall

Was part of a cloning experiment to create the ultimate hitman, and was the only known one to both survive and escape before the whole thing was shut down by the authorities. Their eye and arm were replaced with cybernetics in order to increase their already enhanced abilities, and they were chased by said authorities, eventually winding up on Mumbo’s doorstep and becoming Mumbo’s problem. Now works as security at Doc’s casino, alongside False. Lives at Jungle Wood flats. Occasionally volunteers at the local theatre. Does bonsai as a hobby.

Jevin

Is the slime creature in the pipes. Hypno lets him live with him under the condition he stops blocking the plumbing and making weird noises at 3 AM (Jevin still blocks the plumbing and makes weird noises at 3 AM, just not as much as he was). Has taught himself to take a humanoid shape, and likes having fingers. Sleeps in the bathtub because he can. Was created from a vat of chemicals in a secret lab underneath the house, which used to be owned by Cub. Doesn’t really talk to the man in question that much, but will occasionally refer to Cub as his father for the sole reason of watching him go through eight existential crises in three minutes. Has a glock.

Joe

Head librarian at the local public library, and has read a lot of books on Supernatural Things. Is a veritable fountain of exposition if you can figure out what he’s saying or have Cleo along with you to threaten the integrity of his shins. Has never been seen in the same place as the Beetlejhost. Are they the same person? Are they entirely separate beings? Is there a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde-type situation going on? Who knows!

Beetlejhost

Literally nobody really knows what his deal is. Nobody. Team ZIT ran into him on a call that they expected to be a false alarm and then he decided to follow them home. Spends most of his time being a minor nuisance in the most bizarre ways possible. Is implied to be responsible for the Ever Given getting lodged in the Suez Canal, but never confirmed. When he’s not bothering Team ZIT or getting them out of tight spots, he’s usually pestering Cleo, the only one who can keep him in line. It’s not really known if he and Cleo have a history or if they’re just Like That.

Keralis

Is a ghost haunting an architecture firm, and is mostly bound to the building, though he can travel to other buildings the firm has built, which is, uh, most of them. Initially only able to do small things- mostly writing notes or drawing diagrams- he eventually meets the Beetlejhost when the latter follows Mumbo to work one day for shits and giggles (he wanted to see how long he could mess with Mumbo before the man noticed. As it turned out, about a week, and by the end it was Iskall who noticed). After a couple of days in which Beetle teaches Keralis Ghost Things™, he scares half the office when he finally manifests for the first time. Has unnaturally large eyes and nicknames for most of the workers. Has no idea how he died or what his unfinished business might be. Very knowledgeable about architecture, and his input is usually very much appreciated.

Mumbo

Is a perfectly normal human being who does IT at Keralis’ architecture firm. Lives at Jungle Wood flats and spends most of his free time tinkering with tech and trying to keep Grian and Iskall out of trouble, which is a losing battle. Has a large, beating golden heart in his flat. He’s not really sure what its deal is, but if he feeds it apples it produces enough power for the entire building. Oh, and if he forgets to feed it for an extended period of time it starts draining his bank account. It’s really weird.

Pixlriffs

Was a perfectly normal human being until he died protecting a certain Russian zombie and became a perfectly normal ghost. Was a reporter in life and is a reporter in death. Runs a blog alongside Zloy about the local goings-on, supernatural or not. The blog’s the type where unless you live in/near the town you most likely won’t stumble across it, but they do have a small following of outsiders who assume the blog’s just a work of fiction. His unfinished business is to prevent Zloy from doing anything particularly stupid, a constant battle. Is able to go more places than Zloy due to being incorporeal, but respects people’s privacy. He’s bound to Zloy to a certain degree, not being able to go beyond a certain range of his friend. The range is pretty big, though, and he has plenty freedom of movement.

Python

Had a run-in with the fae as a kid, in which he accidentally pissed one off. In retribution, the faerie challenged him to answer a riddle or he’d be turned into a snake. Python’s answer was partially correct, so the faerie only transformed him partially. Python is fairly chill, though he strongly dislikes the cold and starts hissing if anyone disturbs him during Sun Time™. Sometimes Bdubs, being partially flora, joins Python for Sun Time™. He’s not venomous, because, you know...python. Also, he has a mildly disturbing habit of strangling rats and mice and then eating them whole, but he can’t help it and just tries not to do so when he has company.

Ren

Is a werewolf. He’s pretty chill regardless of form, though it’s only been recently he’s been comfortable enough leaving his ears and tail visible. He works as a lumberjack. One time Pixl introduced him to Monty Python’s Lumberjack Song and it quickly became his favourite thing. He spends most of his free time volunteering at the local theatre because Ren is absolutely a theatre kid and nobody can convince me otherwise. Gets possessed every now and then. Lives in Jungle Wood flats.

Scar

Works as a landscape developer. Gets possessed absurdly easily, though not quite as frequently as Cub. Has a magical method of communication with him. Technically co-owns ConCorp, but isn’t as involved. His cat, Jellie, is very obviously an eldritch abomination in feline form and he is comedically unaware of this. Lives in Jungle Wood Flats with Grian, Iskall, Mumbo, Stress, and Ren.

Skizz

Is the ghost haunting Team ZIT’s office. He was murdered by someone he’d thought was a friend who was trying to use his place to hide from the cops, and he’s stuck around, haunting the building. His unfinished business is to make sure nobody else uses the building for anyone shady, but the ghost rumours tended to chase most people off. Eventually he gets used to having Team ZIT around, and when Tango admits he doesn’t really have anywhere to go one day, Skizz eventually makes the decision to finally unlock the still-furnished upper floor for him. He’s bound to the building, but Impulse learns that carrying Skizz’s old vest with them allows him to leave. After that, Skizz sometimes accompanies them on missions and occasionally just hanging out. He’s usually more helpful than the Beetlejhost is.

Stress

Is a witch. Stress lives in Jungle Wood Flats and works as a doctor who specializes in supernaturally caused injuries- Team ZIT are some of her best customers. She also sells magic potions of various kinds, and has a side gig as a florist. She’s 90% of the Jungle inhabitants’ impulse control. Also has cryokinesis.

Tango

The Team ZIT member with a car. He gets possessed with frankly ridiculous frequency, but claims not to believe in ghosts for a long time (and keeps up the bit for even longer). Has developed various signals to indicate when he’s being possessed again. The strongest one, a rather nasty demon Cleo and the Beetlejhost had to team up on, left him with his glowing red eyes. He didn’t really have anywhere to go before Impulse bought the office, and tended to sleep on the couch or in his car until Skizz decided to let him into the upper floor, where he now lives alongside Zedaph and Impulse.

TFC

A now-retired ghostbuster, TFC calls in Team ZIT one night when he finds himself in over his head against a ghost with a grudge. He winds up becoming a bit of a mentor figure to the trio, usually coaching them over the phone if they’re not sure how to deal with one of the stranger spirits. Lost his leg years ago in a fight with a poltergeist that could have gone better, and now has a robotic prosthetic made by Doc.

Wels

While Team ZIT was out investigating some rumour or another in the woods, they came across a large stone box. Following video game logic, I guess, they then decided opening this large stone box sounded like a fun idea. Well, Tango and Zedaph did. Impulse was a bit more hesitant. The box actually held a medieval knight who’d been put in an enchanted sleep for centuries by his demonic doppelgänger, and was very much not prepared for modern life. Team ZIT took him to Xisuma, who happened to live closest, and Wels is currently helping out on the farm and trying to adjust to life in the 21st century. He can understand and speak modern English just fine because magic. Volunteers at the local theatre quite a lot.

Hels

Is Wels’ doppelgänger. Technically a minor demon. Won a fight with Wels and sealed him away for centuries as a result. A recurring problem. His real motivation is that he really desperately doesn’t want to go back to Hell, but he’s too proud to admit it. Lives in the woods with EX, who’s basically his only friend, though the weirdo with the brown cardigan keeps pestering him about his backstory and feelings for some reason. Has minor pyrokinesis.

XB

Like Biffa, XB is also a ghost from the future, though it seems to be a different timeline than Biffa’s. His unfinished business is preventing the apocalypse, but he has no idea how to do that, no idea if he’s in the right timeline, and is pretty sure he’s gone back a lot farther than he probably should’ve. Also, there’s the whole paradox issue, where if he prevents the apocalypse he never has a reason to go back and prevent the apocalypse, so he doesn’t prevent the apocalypse, so he has to go back and- he tries not to think about it too much. He mostly just hangs out in an abandoned house on the edge of town and vibes.

Xisuma

Is a beekeeper. Nobody’s ever seen his face; when he’s not in his beekeeping outfit, he’s either wearing a helmet, or (more recently) an extremely lifelike and detailed animal mask (is it a mask?). Actually a shapeshifting alien, he crashed down to Earth after a scuffle with his evil clone and was stranded because Earth doesn’t have the right tools or resources to repair a spaceship. These days he’s actually found he’s happier tending to his bees, selling honey, and helping his friends out, and probably wouldn’t leave Earth even if he could. It’s a simpler life, but a pleasant one. He bonds with Biffa over a shared love of tea and being stranded in a technologically inferior world and finding a home.

Evil Xisuma

Is Xisuma’s clone. Feels that if everyone’s going to call him ‘Evil’ he may as well own it. Shot his original’s spaceship down in a scuffle but wound up being brought down with him. Currently hides in the woods. Generally more of a minor nuisance than an actual danger. Used to spend his free time bothering X but has gotten put off by Wels, who has a problem when it comes to evil clones. His friends consist of Hels, who is a terrible role model, and Zedaph, who’s trying to help him work through his problems behind everyone’s backs. Can summon lightning because he deserves it.

Zedaph

Is the reason Team ZIT is ghostbusting in the first place. He’s a sheep shearer by trade, but that’s a fairly seasonal thing and ghostbusting is more fun anyway. Has somehow never been possessed, and claims it’s because he’s always standing next to Tango. He makes sure the other two gets enough sleep Because we all know they can’t be trusted to do it. Probably has some sort of really bizarre and situational magical powers he is thoroughly unaware of. Qualified to be a licensed therapist. Made friends with Evil X at one point, somehow.

Zloy

Like Cleo, he’s a ghost possessing a corpse. Unlike Cleo, there’s a good chance it’s not his corpse. Eh, it’s not like anyone else was using it. Runs a blog with Pixl, because why not. Was already a zombie when he met Pixl, who was still alive at the time. His body is a bit more decayed than Cleo’s, but it’s fine. His goggles are enchanted with the same preservation spell; it’s not really ever explained where he got them from. Has no regard for privacy but is fortunately unable to turn invisible or phase through walls due to inhabiting a physical body. Both can theoretically physically fight ghosts and has enough time to physically fight ghosts, meaning he would be a valuable ally if he could be bothered. Lives in a graveyard. Has an ongoing ‘feud’ with Cleo, in which he puts jabs at her on the blog. Once spent a week as a (very sarcastic) floating potato.

Hermiton

Is the name of the place they all live in/near. Located in an ambiguous location in an ambiguous country, Hermiton is technically large enough to be considered a city but has Town VibesTM. Supernatural going-ons are a fairly normal part of life, and a good number of inhabitants aren’t humans. Despite this, the wider world seems mostly ignorant of the existence of ghosts, magic, etc. I’m not too sure about geography, but it’s surrounded by forest in most directions and in a warm enough climate to not have snow in the winter (so Python doesn’t, you know, freeze to death). Most people don’t tend to bat an eyelid at strange-looking people walking down the street or serving them at the store; they’re used to it by now. There are several theories as to why Hermiton specifically has so much going on when it comes to the supernatural- ley lines, secretly the resting place of some long-forgotten god, et cetera- but it’s actually more of a case of ‘people who have supernatural traits hear rumours of a place where a lot of people have supernatural traits and go there in search of answers/a place to belong’. This doesn’t exactly explain where all the ghosts came from, but hey. Nothing’s perfect.

-Everyone lives in an apartment complex.

-Xisuma as landlord? Or just a really well looked up to person in the complex. Whichever works for you!

-Everyone has 'normal people jobs.' Perhaps Joe is an English teacher? (Cleo's also a teacher. (Irl.) Omg, what if they teach at the same school?) Maybe Bdubs is a professional interior designer? Maybe Cub builds computers? Go nuts, get creative.

-Actually, screw it. Bdubs works at IKEA.

-Everyone meets up every Friday night to go to the pub or go bowling or just do something together.

-They have a discord server because of course they do.

-European Hermits are early-birds, American hermits are night-owls. (This is the only way I can think to portray timezones and waking hours when everyone's living in the same building.)

-They all still love minecraft, don't worry.

-Keralis has so many books his flat is basically a library. He lets people come in and borrow books for a small fee.

-Tinfoilchef is a bit of a shut in but everyone makes an effort to include him.

-Etho would also be a cryptid like Xisuma. Like, we've seen Xisuma's whole body other than his face but the best we know about Etho is that: 1. He exists and 2. From the, like, one single real life photo he's shared, he broke a headset. Also, 3. Allegedly, he's buff. -Cub and Scar made business with the guy who runs the fight club. They get half of the profits and everyone’s always wondering how those two can always afford the most expensive Christmas gifts for everyone.

-Mumbo could be an engineer or work on a STEM field, and he works on some really important and impressive projects and that would explain his polish person, Exept, when it comes to helping another hermit to change a lightbulb or fix a microwave he is an absolute disaster.

-Grian owns a parrot that knows everyones' names and faces and greets them when they come in.

-Scar's apartment has a balcony filled with plants and he has to bring them inside for the winter. (I'm assuming that all 4 seasons happen) Even without the balcony plants, his place is still full of indoor plants including his favorite venus flytrap. There is always a plant knocked over from Jellie's shenanigans. Jellie is supposed to stay in his apartment, however she keeps on getting out somehow, even getting to Xisuma's apartment occasionally.

-There's a grassy patch out back that acts as a backyard, but Stress has effectively taken it over. Perfect for flowers of all colors in the spring and summer, and during the winter you KNOW she’s building an ice castle from which to throw snowball at all her friends.

-Beef and, when he’s visiting, Pause get a lot of questions about Etho (since unlike X who gets one tightlipped visitor in shape of his brother Etho gets two that are willing to be vague) however they charge a fee for people to guess. They’d never actually sell him out but the guesses are always something technical related so there’s not much of a risk, he actually works as a botanist/gardener.

-Iskall is extremely good at ice hockey and, as resident Canadians, Etho and Beef have played with him. However Iskall only knows that he’s played with Beef because both beef and etho refuse to tell him who in the rink was Etho when they played.

-The only person who’s seen Xisuma's face is Keralis.

-Nobody knows what Grian does for a job. Like, when they think they've figured it out what he does, they're thrown through a loop again because he does a lot of odd jobs. Need help with a pet? Grian can help! Rip on your clothes? Don't worry, Grian knows how to fix it! Ect.

-Grian's an assassin. Iskall will make assassin jokes and Grian, without looking up from his coffee will go: "that's not how that works!" And then go back to being quiet. Everyone's like ????

-I love the idea of Grian knowing all these cool facts and when anyone acts he says 'it's because of his job,' and they still can't figure out what he does. He keeps correcting Iskall on assassin facts but they're all just like 'oh Grian sure must love those types of movies, huh.'

-Cleo teaches Joe's kid. (That means she teaches either year 2 or year 3? // 1st grade or 2nd grade?)

-Grian's family is in the mafia but he mostly just vibes. Sure, he works with the mafia, but he keeps his regular life away from work and none of the hermits (besides False because she saved the Mafia boss) know. Imagine boss looking at False and going, 'oh hey, you're already protected.' False is confused and says 'what?' But the Mafia Boss has already left.

-Etho is always in full kakashi cosplay.

-Honorary hermits apartment au: zloy and pixl have a radio show but also act as private investigators. Falsie hires them to investigate how she got the protection of the mafia. On their investigation they start asking Elybeat (that lives on a building right next to the hermits) about weird behaviors that he might have seen. Ely just goes ‘all of what they do is weird. I’ve recorded weird stuff they say and remixed it. They though it was funny and put the remixes as their elevator music.'

-Everyone thinks Etho is an assassin, but really, he's a horticulturist/botanist. He doesn't bother to correct them cause it means he doesn't get pranked, (or, as often.) Maybe someone finds out eventually? I don't know who. Maybe Doc and they keep it hush hush cause they think it's funny or something. || Maybe Bdubs finds out, (because I think he's seen Naruto?? Swear I saw a Twitter post where he recognized a Naruto joke) and he's the only one that recognizes that Etho's dressed like Kakashi and NOT an assassin. (That's lowkey a joke though.)

-Someone warns Grian against parking euro because they think Etho's an assassin and Grian just kinda goes: "alright then." Knowing that there's no way Etho is an assassin, but also realising how the hermits view that profession, he most likely starts feeling kinda bad.

-Beef used to be a car photographer and Mumbo takes photographs as a sideline when he was in college. They would occasionally chat about their past experience in the photography field and sometimes gush about cars.

-Hermit Challenges was actually a truth or dare game among the hermits. Mumbo was basically delirious from lack of sleep to explain his absolute gremlin energy. Mumbo dares Grian to steal front doors before passing out and everyone decided that was the end of that game. No one thought Grian would do the dare. A week later, everyone but Etho and Xisuma were missing their front doors (including Grian.) He stuck them in his bathroom so no one immediately saw the doors.

-As already established, Joe constantly hangs at Keralis's library. Let's say he also has a hobby for writing, and one time he was asking to himself how *insert really specific murder scene* would work in real life. Grian or Doc then overheard him and answers him in a also very specific way, he thanks them with 0 concerns and continues with his writing.

-Etho has been an assassin but it was many years ago, and retired to care for plants. (As you do.) He got hired by The Goatfather but intentionally botched the killings because, 'hey now those two are friends >:(' He and Bdubs still have the endrod game but it involves the whole apartment building and several discord messages going "located" or "flashlight on the move.'

-Stress paints all the hermit's door and puts their names on them. (-🌿)

-The organisization Grian works for is called "The Watchers!" They text him in riddles of what his missions are. This is so that if anyone peaks at his phone, they don't understand immediately!

-What if in YHS happen because of grian family and Sam is from an other family who does not support the grain family. So grian will not bring up high school and school and when joe and Cleo talk about there student grian sometimes cringes remember what happened in high school. (-🌿)

-Grian and Mumbo's hobbits holes were two cupboards they found on their respective apartments and decided to make a room out of them and named them their hobbit holes after they found out they both had them (-🐿️)

-What if it's a really old apartment and the 'hobbit holes' actually connect to each others apartment. (-🐺)

-Mumbo has these periods when he overworks like crazy and when they're over - he sleeps for like 24-36 hours straight. Everybody knows about this and help him if he falls asleep in random plaxes around the apartment. Mumbo once fell asleep right before his door and Grian tried to help him get inside while mumbling. Guess which remix were aded to the elevator music next week.

-Whenever anyone is annoyed or upset, grian sometimes pops his head up from his book and goes "who do I need to kill?" No one takes him seriously though he *would* kill for any of his friends.

-People who have left the server work nearby but have moved to new apartments. (For example, Welsknight works at a nearby food truck) (-☘️)

-With the Grian being a spy you get several oints where he thinks he's been found out but no one puts the and two together. They're all like: "Grian just likes action movies I guess."

-Scar's "wizard robe" is a bathrobe he owns. One day he forgets to change and just walks out in a bathrobe and no pants.

-Since Cleo teaches Joe's kid, maybe that extends to all the hermits' kids? Like the ones that have them, like not at the same time but at some point you know?

-I don't think I saw any regarding headgames, but I could've missed it. Anyways, what if Cleo wanted to make a big Scrapbook in her free time of all her friends, so she asks everybody to try and get pictures. So the PVP heads are candid photos, and the tradeable one are like selfies or group pictures. The other heads could just be a requirement for the picture like have a sheep in the picture. And maybe she gives the winners dinner payed by her or something.

-On the head cannon that hermits that aren’t on the server work nearby, Biffa is the actual mayor.

-Are mobs (and half mobs by extension) still a thing in apartment au? Cause if not I propose that Jevin just has cloob blue dyed hair and a bunch of blue tattoos.

-XB bakes a lot and always shares the food he makes with the others. They adore his cookies. Scar really wants to make some cookies in the shapes of disney characters with him, but he's too shy to ask. (-nameless anon)

-Perhaps Mumbo and Iskall are also protected by the mafia because of grian (perhaps scar is too) They and False have a 'we are protected and have no idea why' group (-Frost Anon)

-Imagine the hermits want to throw a nice party but X and Etho were kinda like “yeah no i’ll pass” so they make it a masquerade so that they can come- and then the whole night no one knows who anyone really is, but still has a really good time.

-Grian wanted a pet parrot, but felt like he would be terrible at taking care of one so he has toy parrots instead, those that have pre made phrases and such, and he is proud of his toy parrot pets. (-🐿️)

-Xisuma hosts a podcast! That's where all of his Xisuma speaks content ends up coming from. (-🇵🇭)

-Etho has a secret food blog called "Cooking With Etho" (based on the actual cooking with Etho segment in usually his modded stuff.) He also knows that there's hermits that either: have no idea how to cook properly or can't cook real meals due to their work. To help with this, sometimes he leaves finished meals or recipes with them (outside their doors or somehow in their fridge) and no one knows who does it prompting the theory of a self care ghost haunting the building.

-False is the chief of police for the town they live in. Iskall is a hired assassin who normally gets employed by the mysterious figure GOATfather. Doc is the GOATfather, head of the mafia. Falsie is trying to hunt down these two as well as any others associated with them. The nHo is part of the mafia. Falsie has no idea any of them are in the mafia and they refuse to kill her because she has become such a close friend to them.

-Maybe Grian is a spy instead of an assassin? The group the Watchers is a government policing organization bent on trying to crack down on mob activity in the area.

-Joe and Cleo often go home at the same time, and all the way it's almost always Cleo complaining about her students being bratty and the likes (Bonus points if Joe carpools with Cleo, who owns a car.)

-False unknowingly helps the boss of the mafia after seeing him wounded on a street one day, earning her their protection.

-As a callback to Season 6, Stress became a cat lady for a bit while False became a dog lady. As an added bonus: Cleo became nuts when Cub decided to gift her with spiders for her birthday or some other event.

-Mumbo still sidelines as a cameraman/film director for short documentaries and comedy sketches where he often invites Zed and his buddy Jack to act maybe?

-The first time X was proven to be an actual person was when the girls temporarily kicked the boys out to have the apartment all to themselves for a girls’ night which prompted the boys to have their own boys’ night. X was wearing his grey helmet that night so his face was still obscured tho, and from that day forward they always had a weekly girls’ night and boys’ night alternating on which group gets to have the apartment to themselves.

-False may seem like she can take a shot or two, but in reality she’s very lightweight and easily drunk, and is always the first one wasted. -Civil War started because they used to get groceries delivered to their doors and Grian started stealing them when they were left in the doorstep. Everyone stole each others groceries until one day they went into teamss of one side vs the other side of the corridor to the other until Grian stole so many groceries Dic was like 'Dammit!' He started going to the store to get groceries instead of getting them delivered to his door after that. (-@sayeshaa1108.)

-Doc works as a social engineer and part time mafia boss. He rarely shows up for game nights. However, when he does, nobody else stands a chance.

-Tango, Impulse and Zedaph go over to each other's rooms so often they practically live together in an apartment room 3X bigger than everyone else.

Guns, Gangs, Getting Shot. Don't read if you can't handle this topics.

-Everyone finds out Grian is an assassin/mafia boss because someone from a different gang (*cough cough* sam gladiator *cough cough*) found out where he lives and tried to murder him. Queue epic gun fight scene. If you want some angst, Grian gets shot a couple of times in the fight but didn’t realize it because of the adrenaline and passes out. (-Anon.)

Work isn't very stressing on its but I work with strong personalities and sometimes making them agree with you and doing their own things isn't easy. But today is Friday and my afternoon was pretty relaxing and fun.

I hope your week has been good to you too😊

As you certainly noticed, English isn't my first language, so I would have to write the story in my native language and then translate. Sadly, my brain can't deal with smut in my native language (it's weird but I can't do much about it) and so I am blocked, or at least I was when I tried it years ago. Maybe I will try again but for now I am content with sharing ideas and reviewing others'stories😊

Maybe I am a bit too much but originally in the Levi fake dates au I thought to put together Levi and your security guard oc🙈 i am like a Noah, I just want everybody to be part of a couple😂 but I really don't know anything about your oc so maybe someone else would be a better match, maybe some Kelvin's youth's brother?

Yeah, k&k relationship surprises me at every turn bc it could go bad so easily and instead they are always very normal. Even when Kelvin doesn't invite him at the lunch, it is a normal level of shittiness, while Dennis manipulated Mac 24/7.

Thank you for the new snipet! Mmmh, someone is feeling frisky already at breakfast?😏😏😏 yes, those almost transparent shirts did their job a bit too well😂 I like how Kelvin represses every possible not platonic thought automatically, he must have a long story of almost moments that were destroyed.

I also adored that he still gets thrilled when Keefe wears something he bought him and now I have in eyelids Kelvin being all professional and knowledgeable about measurement and cloth and doing it for Keefe in order to order some clothes that fits him perfectly. All of this while Keefe is almost naked, can't do anything bc he is being measured and he can't screw it but also he is naked and is being touched a bit too untimely so he really wants to kiss Kelvin. Or to run away and live as an hermit.

And I am too obsessed with wordle! I play twice every day bc I play in English and on my native language too. Love this kind of little details😍

I have watched Cyrano (the original play is one of my fave) so now I am inspired😂

First idea, Kelvin is the Cyrano of the situation. He found Keefe a possible partner and he is helping him wooing him, it really isn't difficult. Obv he gives some really weird advices (he read his sister's teen magazines and still thinks you need three days to answer a text) and Keefe often is in chaotic situations bc of this but miraculously the partner seems to be overjoyed about all this mess, Keefe makes his life so much interesting. Kelvin can't deal with Keefe spending much less time with him and maybe now his advices are intentionally weird and maybe the dates ideas he shares are the ones he wanted to have with Keefe.

You know how this ends, obv😂

Another idea is this: Keefe is used to write his feelings for Kelvin down in letters he never sends and for extra precaution he never writes his name. Kelvin finds one of his letters and wants to know who is this mysterious lover. Now this is a decide your own adventure: Keefe fakes a boyfriend but then Kelvin is very jealous and obv he could be a better boyfriend bc he never shows up or gives gifts or other things like he want to do for Keefe if he was HIS bf OR Kelvin decides to find this mysterious person and investigates. He keeps asking people at church if they now him but they have assumed that the younger son of Eli is together with his weird friend lime three years ago and don't want to meddle in their own business and/or weird dynamics. No one with a brain would ever try something with Keefe with Kelvin still alive.

Another idea is: k&k fake dates!

That youth pastor is really pestering Kelvin about his lack of romantic prospects, so what is better than fake a relationship with your best friend who already lives with you?

Another smutty but sadder idea: Keefe is used to much to egoist doms, who care only for their pleasure and often harmed him and just straight up used him. So when he and Kelvin begin to have sex, he doesn't make it about himself too and even if he reaches the orgasms it's incidental or when he takes care of himself after the fact and after having cared about Kelvin. At the beginning Kelvin doesn't really notice and maybe he thinks it's normal to not come every time (it's true and he is inexperienced and a bit spoiled too). But after Keefe not accepting to be touched in return and saying he hasn't really done anything to deserve his orgasm, Kelvin begins to doubt in himself then to really question Keefe about what he thinks sex is about.

There is embarrassment, many hurting memories of Keefe's exes and at least a scene where he is tied up so Kelvin can have his wicked way with him while the other almost can't deal with all this attention. Bc delayed orgasms can be fun and Kelvin is very possessive about it but also he loves Keefe and just wants him to have everything.

And totally Kelvin buys Keefe lingerie too!

And jewellery with their initials.

Hi 💫Anon! Oh yeah, I know what you mean. Hope you’re having a chill weekend. I am making the most of mine before starting back work tomorrow. I’ve been steadily writing the Kelvin x Keefe fic and am at nearly 7000 words now with still a good bit to go 😳🙈 I hope people like it when it’s done haha but either way I’m having fun with it.

Your English is great! 😊 But I can understand what you mean when it comes to writing and writing certain topics. It’s hard enough in general. But if you ever do get the urge to try again. I bet you’ll do great. Your ideas certainly are.

Ooooh that’s such a cool concept! I’ve never had someone really include an OC of mine in their ideas/headcanons before. James very well could be a good match for Levi, maybe with a similar dynamic, having come from a background like Keefe’s? I have another OC popping up in my new fic that I quite like too so he’s also an option 😊

Oh yeah, Kelvin and Keefe are miles better than Mac and Dennis when it comes to their dynamic. I love them but Macdennis are toxic af 😂 K x K, while not perfect, are definitely not at that level and I doubt they ever will be, thankfully. I’m having a blast writing Kelvin’s inner freak out at how hot he finds Keefe tbh, as well as his deeper feelings for him in general. I just want Keefe to know that he is desirable! He is loved!!! (And Kelvin too, of course.)

Haha that idea about poor Keefe in the middle of a fitting, mostly naked and at the whim of Kelvin is a very funny scene. I might just include that in a future fic 😂 Anon, again, YOUR MIND. I am saving all of these prompts ✍️One or two of these concepts will show up in some way in my new fic (I won’t spoil which) and all the others, I’m making note of too.

Ooh fun, questions! 1) What do I find easier to write? - Dialogue. 100%. I love the fast-paced banter-style dialogue between two characters. It’s always the most fun (and because of that easier) thing for me to write. 2) What do I find harder to write? - Description. I used to be okay at it, much better and more, well, descriptive lol but I found as I got older, I realised I had a habit of getting a bit too ‘purple prosey’ with it and have scaled back since. So I struggle with that fine line of ‘I want this to sound pretty’ and ‘it’s too much’ a lot of the time. 3) Favourite tropes - Oh, I have many. Fake/Pretend relationship is very high up there, as is Sharing a Bed, mutual pining, enemies-to-friends-to-lovers, friends-to-lovers, fix-it fics, hurt/comfort, marriage of convenience and a tonne of others I can’t think of right now haha. 4) Tropes I dislike - honestly, there aren’t any I can think of immediately that I dislike outright, but there are things that I don’t gravitate towards like fics with major character death (where the character stays dead for good), or certain AUs I don’t vibe with, etc. 5) Favourite dynamics between characters - this is such a cool question. Those who have read my fics from different fandoms will have picked up on this lol. I do love to write playful bickering between my characters. A fast-paced banter with my dialogue. I tend to gravitate towards friends-to-lovers, or idiots-to-lovers as a basis and am a sucker for writing mutual pining too. 6) A fandom I’d love to write for - Ooh that’s a good one! Hmmm. I definitely have some I want to write *more* for, like 9-1-1/Buddie and What We Do In The Shadows/Nandermo but as for one I’ve never written for at all? Maybe Ted Lasso. Or Kingsman. Or Leverage maybe. And probably a load more I just can’t think of right now lol.
