This is a photo of my grandmother Avelina and my grandfather Rosendo. My grandfather passed away but my grandmother just turned 90 back in April. I took this video of her boxing on her bday. Can you believe how good she looks at 90?! #familyhistory #filipinoheritage https://www.instagram.com/p/BzHU0cwDeZo/?igshid=usksjepad3ug

Another October has come and gone but this month, I took note pause and participated in things Filipino. We went to @filamfest in San Diego, ate Filipino Food, and my kids learned historical facts from me. Here's a visual for some of the things I told them: Mommy was born in the 🇵🇭 Philippines and her house had chickens. Mommy and others use 🌂 more for ☀️ days than ☔️ as it is too hot and and don't want to get tanned. No slippers inside the house ever, only outside. We played and bathed in the warm rain water. Coconut 🌴 🌴are plentiful and drinking them out of its shell is common. Pineapples 🍍 are common there too, along with mangos and jackfruit. We had these trees over our house. Mommy moved to the other side of the world 🌎 to a tiny apartment when she was 5. This was partly possible because of relatives that have and were serving in the US Navy. Mommy has been in the USA 🇺🇸 for over 30 years and now an American citizen. Mommy is blessed to be in America and an American with my Filipino heritage. It was here that I met your daddy from 🇲🇽 but we'll save that story for another day 😊. . . . #mystory #filipino #America #usa #navy #slippers #sunshine #coconut #world #immigrant #pineapple #chicken #umbrella #rain #Philippines #filipino #filipina #filipinoheritagemonth #filipinoheritage #filipinofood #filamfest #locketsncharms

The first Filipinos landed in Morro Bay, California, in 1587, three decades before the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock. These Filipino men escaped Spanish galleon ships en route to Spain. Some Filipinos migrated in similar ways and settled in the bayous of Louisiana in 1763, giving Filipinos deep roots in the U.S. #filipinoamericanhistorymonth #kuyaskitchen #pinoypride #filipinoheritage #october

During the American colonial period in the Philippines (1898-1946), the Barong Tagalog initially remained a popular garment among the Filipino upper class and political elite. However, as American influence increased and Western-style clothing became more prevalent, the popularity of the Barong Tagalog began to decline.
Tumblr media
The American colonizers brought with them their own clothing styles and fashion trends, which gradually replaced traditional Filipino clothing. In addition, the American government encouraged Filipinos to adopt Western-style clothing as a way of modernizing and assimilating into American culture.
As a result, many Filipinos began to view the Barong Tagalog as old-fashioned and impractical, and the garment became associated with the pre-colonial past rather than the modern present. The decline in popularity of the Barong Tagalog was also influenced by economic factors, as the materials and craftsmanship required to make the garment were expensive and time-consuming.
Tumblr media
Despite these challenges, the Barong Tagalog continued to be worn by some Filipinos as a symbol of national pride and cultural identity. Today, the Barong Tagalog is still worn on special occasions and formal events, and efforts are being made to promote its revival and preservation as a cherished part of Filipino cultural heritage.
